Why Become a Master Locksmith? Is joining the Master Locksmith Association worth it? The Master Locksmith Association is the UK’s leading locksmiths association. Members can take full advantage of the countless membership benefits which include amongst others: up to date training, information channeling, regional meet ups and seminars, as well as huge discounts on items such as vehicles, insurances, credit card rebates, websites, processing software, telecom bills, advertising along with great bargains on mortgages, financing and pensions. How Can One Join? Locksmiths who are interested in joining the MLA may apply by sending an E-­‐mail to the MLA Head Office (enquiries@locksmiths.co.uk) and request an application form. Locksmiths may also contact, over the phone, the MLA Head Office on 01327 262255. Membership may be granted to aspirants that qualify as stated in the MLA Bylaws. The criteria for membership may be found under the Membership Sectors. Membership Sectors The Master Locksmith Association comprises of the following four membership sectors: The British Locksmiths Institute The British Locksmiths Institute is a branch of the MLA which trains individuals who wish to gain experience and progress from Student Member to Advance Student Member of the BLI and on to become active Members of the Master Locksmiths Association, as well as gain a certificate in locksmithing. This membership sector is for individual members who wish to be part of a professional body, who fully meets the Association’s set of standards for membership and, as stated previously, it has two levels of membership.


The Student sector is for aspirants sixteen and over who are making preparations for the Institute’s Entry Examination. Students should be receiving, or willing to receive, competent practical training as a locksmith. Locksmith Brentwood and most parts of London have a lot of practical training facilities for student members. The Advanced Student sector is for aspirants aged 16 and above, who have at least 12 months of experience in the locksmith trade and intend to study for the British Locksmiths Institute Examination. They should have passed the Entry Examination, as well as received enough practical training as a locksmith. Locksmith Hornchurch and the Association only grant the advanced student classification to an aspirant for four full calendar years, during which time that person should pass the BLI Examination. Advanced Student is the highest category of membership of the British Locksmiths Institute.
