MISSION

“We make landscapes for all. We design, envision, and construct in collaboration with our clients. We appreciate sites for what they were, what they are, and what they might become.

WHO WE ARE

We make things, we are builders, fabricators, creators, and designers. As a multidisciplinary landscape architecture and construction practice we are interested in design at every scale, from the city to the object. We believe that collaboration and experimentation are the root of a project’s success. As landscape architects and builders who sit at the same table, we work together to solve problems at the masterplan and detail scale, linking all aspects of a project’s context, programmatic needs, and materiality. For over 35 years, Terry and Troy Sanders have been actively involved in Landscape Construction at all scales; from sensitive shoreline restorations to meticulous high-end residential projects, the construction team has seen and done it all. Our expertise in construction stems from a love of materiality and craftsmanship. Moreover we believe in providing value to our clients by leveraging the design/build model and pride ourselves on delivering projects on time, vision, and budget. Our design team is led by Jonathan Blaseg and Leif Peterson, they have worked at every scale of Landscape Architecture for over 10 years and garnered praise for work ranging from master planned communities to urban parks. Their work has been recognized nationally by the AIA, LILA, and ASLA, with exhibitions at the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum and Cube Gallery. Both stay active with design critiques at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design where Jonathan has been an adjunct faculty member since 2012. For them, design is not an ego-driven endeavor—it is a revealing and rewarding process of collaborative investigation. Their goal is simple, make sense of a place via solutions that are derived from a site and its users; they seek out ideas, constructs, and materials that are in concert with the region, architecture, and client mission. Through a process of collaboration, experimentation and questioning, the firm’s work embraces the complexities of each site with quiet clarity and ecological integrity. We seek not to recreate nature in our work, but rather to redefine natural frameworks and transform them into innovative solutions for comprehensively designed environments.

APPROACH

CLARIFY PLACE & SPACE Our projects are characterized by their ability to feel at-ease and appropriate for their context. We have become recognized for our strength in building identity and completing projects that exhibit an understanding of clients and their needs. Through the life of a project we emphasize deduction and simplicity as a way to maintain focus.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & DETAIL We know that the details matter and are often the opportunity to make a project personal and refined. We believe that the material relationships of a project are often the crux of its success. No matter the scale of a project, our construction team works hand-in-hand with the design team in order ensure quality control and seamless perfection.

UNITING SITE & STRUCTURE Our goal is simple, make sense of a place. We trust that our job is to find resolutions inherent to a site, we believe they are already there. Our training in minimalism is reflected in our holistic frameworks and attention to detail; we focus on installing designs that are responsive and remain relevant through many years of change.

MOVING LIFE OUTDOORS Our sites are about people and the life that surrounds them, we listen to our clients to understand how they live and seek to amplify that in our landscapes. We always build upon a site’s existing character and embrace the opportunity to actively engage nature. We believe successful sites promote engagement and interaction.

PROCESS

We share a mutual love for the land, craft, and invention. We believe in design solutions that are framed by those who will live in the spaces we construct. We are client-centric and thus embrace the unique needs and tastes of each of our clients. We seek to highlight the importance of narrative in the landscape and prioritize involvement, intention, connection, material honesty, place-making, and discourse. We believe design impacts all elements of our daily life, shaping our ethos as a society and the health of our environment. Our design and construction processes are always specific to a project, to a place, and to a client. We know that a successful project requires collaboration, to us this is a simple fact of our daily lives. We are trained in working together to solve problems and create better futures. Such partnerships are driven by our shared respect for the skills of each individual within the firm, as well as our admiration for our clients and consultants. Our curiosity and interest in the making of landscapes is limitless. For this reason we offer a comprehensive suite of design services including site design, master planning, programming, project administration, cost-estimation, and visualization for urban, rural, residential, institutional, and commercial projects. Our construction team specializes in residential and commercial work, but our portfolio runs the gamut from crematoriums to prairie restorations, with a reputation for precise detailing and context-specific material installations. Our team of designers and builders sit at the same table because we know that good ideas can come from anywhere. We hope that our work - our landscapes - are not a one-way vision, not controlled by a certain point-of-view, rather that they participate and contribute to our community’s ongoing dialogue with the built environment and nature. We know the importance of process, doing things as well as we can rather than as fast as possible. We choose to make landscapes because its what we love to do; we choose to collaborate because we know its the right thing to do.

WORK

MISSISSIPPI DRIVE

Location: Metro Area, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: Natural Environments Located on the Mississippi River, this modern residential landscape project includes a shoreline stabilization system and a gathering/entertainment space. It was important to the client that the gathering space did not impede views of the river from the house; with this in mind, the decision was made to nestle deck and patio into the brow of the river bluff. The stabilization system utilizes a combination of hard-armor toe protection and deep rooted native plantings.

LAKE MARION

Location: Deephaven, MN

Team: Charles R. Stinson Architects,

Project Type: Residential Project Lead: Coen + Partners

Streeter & Associates Photography: Peter Kerze

The clients at Lake Marion were committed to restoring their degraded 22-acre landscape to its native splendor, this included wetlands, forests, and lake shorelines. The design team led a significant restoration effort, complemented by an extensive system of linear paths, environmental art installation, hardscapes, and softscapes to support the family’s new home construction.

WORK

DUPONT

Location: Minneapolis, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: Concrete Science

Simplicity and functionality are the central components of this meaningful residential renovation. Five rectangles: wood, concrete, copper, turf, and meadow are balanced within the small urban backyard; artfully arranged and scaled to the family’s uses, the design subtly provides privacy and programmatic clarity. By maximizing opportunities for play and entertainment, the flexible space easily morphs for any occasion.

GREENBELT COMMUNITY

Location: Minneapolis, MN Project Type: Residential Development Collaborators: Project For Pride In Living, Lunning-Wende, Solution Blue

The Hawthorne Eco-Village’s Greenbelt Community Master Plan presents a model for an affordable, safe, and livable single-family community with shared site amenities in a moderately-dense development. The eleven homes are organized to encourage pride and ownership in the neighborhood. The landscape leverages native vegetation in order to balance sustainability goals, safety, maintenance, and beauty.

WORK

OAKWOOD HILL

Location: Medina, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: James McNeal Architecture, Concrete Science

Completed winter of 2020, this renovation of a 1950s farmhouse started with a thorough masterplan for the property’s 30-acres of wetlands, woods, and pasture. The architecture and landscape work in unison, creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior living spaces; the site reveals itself through moments of gardening, play, leisure and entertainment.

VALLEY NATURAL FOODS

Location: Burnsville, MN Project Type: Commercial Collaborators: Intectural

The new patio supports the VNF Co-op’s mission to promote the wellness of its stakeholders by creating an inviting outdoor area that fosters a deeper relationship between people and plants. The courtyard provides a space for both relaxation and education; surrounded by native plants, the space includes signage explaining pollinator communities and the importance of soil health in sustainable agricultural practices.

WORK

NATURE PLAY

Location: Minneapolis, MN Project Type: Institutional Collaborators: University of Minnesota, Damon Farber, Whole Trees, Earthscape

PEBL worked collaboratively with UMCDC staff to develop the design of their new outdoor play area, the project’s goal was to emphasize a connection to nature and present opportunities for ecological education through the course of daily routines and classes. The nature-based playground is rooted in a palette of sensory focused plants and address critical age-specific physical developmental benchmarks.

POLO CLUB ROAD

Location: Minnetrista, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: Concrete Science

This residential remodel provides a dramatic counterpoint to the home’s architecture and extensive grounds. Multiple “rooms” are drawn together by a linear “art” garden, edged by a sweeping prairie planting, and framed by an edge of arborvitae. The success of this project was driven by its ability to connect the interior of the home to the outdoor experience, revealing the home’s potential for entertainment and outdoor recreation.

WORK

LOGAN AVENUE

Location: Richfield, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: ERE Architecture

The design of this backyard renovation included a diverse program: kitchen addition, deck, patios, bbq area with communal table, fire-pit, sauna, vegetable garden, and fruit orchard. Central to the organization of the program elements was the clients’ love for food production, cooking, entertaining, and local ecology. A crucial design goal was to maintain a clear hierarchy of spaces, use, and form.

TMBR

Recycled Pavers

Acid Etched Concrete

Granite Cobbles

Wood Pavers

Black Steel

Location: Minneapolis, MN Project Type: Residential Development Collaborators: Dwyer Oglesbay Architects, Kimley-Horn

The exterior design of TMBR focuses on high-quality materials that are sustainable and local - natural wood, recycled pavers, and modern finishes. The structure features an exposed mass timber frame structure, significantly reducing the project’s carbon footprint. The development will offer main floor retail space, a rooftop garden community and private outdoor decks as a unique retreat from urban living.

WORK

PRAIRIE MAZE

Location: St. Paul, MN Project Type: Institutional Collaborators: Minnesota Science Museum

Working with the Minnesota Science Museum, the Prairie Maze is a hands-on exhibit that challenges visitors of all ages with fun brainteasers, immersive puzzles, and interactive games. The maze is formed by and edge of boulders and densely planted native perennials that reach heights exceeding six feet. Understanding the diverse qualities of the vegetation is integral to solving the maze.

ORCHARD CIRCLE

Location: Lake Elmo, MN Project Type: Residential Collaborators: Highmark Builders

Creating an outdoor living room was a central tenant to this client’s vision for their landscape. The new intervention complements the site’s scale through a cohesive response in material, detail, and form, the spaces extend the interior experience and invite everyone to enjoy the outdoors. The plant palette responded to the development’s conservation restrictions, provides year round beauty and habitat.
