Flowers, and more recently roses, often still growing, sometimes picked and taken indoors, can be sparkling with dew, or fading and dishevelled, alive or dead but always fresh to my eyes and demanding my attention. It is the shapes and colours that fascinate, the intensity of light and the way it affects the patterns and textures, or the movement that alters the shape. Painting for me is usually a period of intense observation, absorption, stillness and meditation, focusing both on the minutiae and the bigger picture with detailed concentration and fleeting glances. It is an intimacy like no other, love perhaps, certainly a ‘getting to know’ followed by a deep understanding and a commitment. In contrast, I make quick spontaneous paintings or drawings of flowers in situ, just catching a moment’s light or movement, it aids an understanding different to that of studio observation. With these drawings, there is less time to think and it is more about reaction and instinct so something comes across that is almost unknown but is nevertheless absorbed into the memory. It is this fund of images and emotions that becomes an adumbration for future paintings. Rosie Sanders
