The Quarter Jars by Alayna Stiffler Bickering, over and over and over! First day of summer is great, second month of too much togetherness and by August, as much I as dread the school year to start again, I know they are relieved to be back at school with their friends in their own routine. We are not a spanking family, I like to think that raising voices is rare, but we probably have a time or two that the neighbors have heard us and grounding is just too inconvenient for a busy work at home mom. There had to be something that would break the challenge of summer too much togetherness when I fell into a quarter mine. Let me take a step back into time. My children are spread out in age, except for the two youngest children, they are three years apart. Together, they usually get along but as they both were getting older, their passion for their wants started to become more intense and we needed a summer solution. Threats to toss favorite stuff animals and not letting them talk to each for an hour, which by the way is the best punishment, was not going to work anymore. I also knew that this was not a job for one of those Nanny shows, but I knew that my old “fun for mom” punishments were worn out. Thinking outside of the box is what I do best and I knew that I needed to pull my brain power together if I was going to make it through the summer. It was the beginning of May and they had already set out to be in charge of each other. Resorting to calling them MOM when they ordered each other, was not giving them a clear picture of what I expected and just enhanced preteen/teenager attitudes. Huffing and puffing was starting to look like it was going to be their new facial expressions over the summer. Beating my head up against my counter is when I realized that I had struck gold and this was going to work. Now, we all know that money motivates! Businesses offer money as bonuses, incentives and rewards and personally, I know it has
inspired me to work harder and smarter, so why wouldn’t it work with my children. Without disclosing the madness behind my smile, I had two jars that I asked them to decorate. They could use ribbon, bows, tape, paper markers or whatever they could find that they could claim ownership. Then I presented each one with a roll of quarters. Yes, it cost me $20, but it was the best $20 I have ever wasted, but if I had to do it over again, I would only give them $5 in quarters each. They got to put the money in their jars that they just decorated and then I broke the news to them, they had to be nice to each other. Shocked, they said, we are always nice to each other. Once I laid down the rules of the Quarter Jars , there was a change in attitudes immediately. The only way to lose a quarter is to really step out of the boundaries, but it was priceless to watch them be nice to each other day after day so neither one would lose the first quarter and whomever empties their quarter jar first gets to do the chores of the other for a week. The jars are three years old and for the most part, they sit on the counter untouched, but I do give warning that if they continue they will lose a quarter even if it means having to swap quarters to each others’ jars. We just pulled it out for the two week trial run before the summer hits and it takes a lot for them to lose a quarter, but they know I am truly upset when they lose a quarter. Starting now are the warnings, and my favorite is. That would have cost you a quarter and to see their attitudes change is magic to a mom’s ears. Submitted by Alayna Stiffler, Locust Grove, VA. UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON The University of Mary Washington is a public arts and sciences institution, in the heart of Fredericksburg, that attracts intellectually curious undergraduate and graduate students in search of rigorous academics. With a total enrollment of more than 5,000 students, UMW offers a supportive campus community that values and instills honor and integrity. Moreover, the university – located midway between Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C. – provides a rich array of research, internship, leadership, and recreational opportunities that not only train students for the real world but allow them to interact closely with faculty members. In addition, Mary Washington offers myriad cultural activities that are open to the local community, including theater performances, concerts, and the Great Lives lecture series. In recent years, the University of Mary Washington has seen its academic reputation garner national recognition in numerous selective guidebooks, including Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, the Fiske Guide to Colleges and the Princeton Review’s edition of “The Best 376 Colleges.” FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS Fredericksburg Christian Schools is an evangelical, non-denominational school dedicated to a strong academic program, with Christian character and Biblical truths integrated in every area, in order that students develop a lifelong Christian worldview. That is the mission statement of FCS. For over 33 years, FCS has been committed to entering into partnership with Christian parents who desire a Christ-centered education for their children. Service projects at home and abroad are offered and encouraged, helping our young people grow as community leaders and servants. Our dedicated staff works alongside the students, finding those “teachable moments” when children learn more about integrating their faith and their studies. These are the lessons that will last for life. Fredericksburg Christian Schools builds a solid academic and Biblical foundation in a nurturing and loving environment, from preschool through high school. Our strong academic program at the high school level has prepared our graduates for entrance into excellent colleges, with many receiving
scholarships. We offer a full range of academic courses, including dual enrollment with a local college and advanced placement classes. We have a full sports program at the middle school and high school levels, including football. We offer band, orchestra and chorus to 4th grade through high school students. We also have a classroom music program at the elementary level. Our comprehensive technology program (which begins in our elementary program), in coordination with the University of Richmond, well equips our students for the future. Drama activities are offered for students in grades 7 through 12. Our art program offers various art opportunities including AP Art. Our students’ collection of art work has been chosen to be displayed in the George W. Bush Presidential Library. We invite you to visit one or more of our campuses and to observe our mission statement in action. FCS continues to educate Christian leaders…for life.

Spotsylvania County has the distinction of being the location of the first armed encounter of United States Colored Troops against Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. This badge of honor took place on May 15, 1864, at the intersection of Catharpin and Old Plank Roads, two miles southeast of the ruins of the Chancellor House on modern Route 3, and Ely’s Ford Road. The 23rd was a new regiment, freshly recruited and trained in the Washington, D.C. area from former slaves, a good number of whom had borne the weight of chattel labor to owners in Fredericksburg and the surrounding region. The incident was a chance encounter, but one that seemed to be rooted in destiny for these men. Up until this skirmish, black troops had not been entrusted to combat service in the eastern theater of the war. Union command in the Army of the Potomac had greeted the inclusion of black soldiers with great hesitation, fearing that they would turn and run under the stress of combat situations. Thus, on this fateful day, these men proved their mettle, setting an example that would illustrate their worth as fighting men through to the end of the war. On this day, the regiment had been relegated to guarding army baggage trains parked by the Chancellor ruins, well behind the lines of fighting during the battle of Spotsylvania. Probing the rear of the Union Army on this morning, was a high spirited Confederate cavalry brigade commanded 34
by General Thomas L. Rosser. The Confederates were traveling along Catharpin Road, feeling their way toward a crossing of the Ni River, near the Piney Branch Church, when they encountered the 2nd Ohio Cavalry. The Ohio troops were caught by surprise, having just enjoyed some leisure time and a quick meal. A number of the Union troops had disassembled and oiled their carbines, allowing the parts to dry in the sun. No one had anticipated an encounter with enemy forces this far behind the fighting. Unable to muster an appreciable force to stem the flow of the enemy advance, the 2nd Ohio quickly mounted and began a mad dash northeastward, along Catharpin Road, toward the Alrich Farm, two miles away. Amazingly, word of this potential disaster reached the 4th Division of the Federal 9th Corps, of which the 23rd USCTs were a member. Being the closest troops available to respond, the 23rd, along with the color company of the 30th USCTs, raced at the double quick, toward the fast approaching rebel brigade. Their two mile dash brought them full face into combat. Wheeling the regiment to the right, they entered the intersection and adjacent fields in perfect form, brought their rifled muskets up and fired into Rosser’s stunned advance. This caused the Confederate force to wither and fall back toward a tree line within which they hoped to make a stand, but a now reenergized 2nd Ohio pursued them and sent them in full retreat, back down Catharpin Road, towards Todd’s Tavern.

The 23rd went on to serve valiantly for the remainder of the war, taking heavy casualties during the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg on July 30, 1864. In anticipation of the opportunities available during the Civil War Sesquicentennial to tell the story of the 23rd, the author began a conversation with friend and fellow historian Steward Henderson, about assembling a representative unit as re-enactors to portray the regiment. Thus far there has been substantial interest in making such a portrayal available, currently and through 2015. Additional interest has been expressed by the John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center Museum in Spotsylvania, and they have partnered with us in our efforts. A commemorative event is being planned for Saturday, May 17, 2014 to properly remember the 23rd and the day that brought them to glory.
John Cummings is a visual historian and the author of two books on the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania region. He provides battlefield guide services and research assistance to visitors. He has also written for several national and local magazines and newspapers, and provided historical research and commentary for four documentary films. He served on the former Spotsylvania Courthouse Tourism and Special Events Commission, and is the chairperson for the Friends of the Fredericksburg Area Battlefields, (FoFAB). In February 2011, he became the co-founder of the reactivated 23rd Regiment, United States Colored Troops.

ORIGINAL ART WORK BY TANYA RICHEY Tanya Richey is an accomplished fine artist who has traveled and painted across the world. A native of Virginia, she now lives in the Fredericksburg area and paints from her studio gallery on Caroline Street. When asked why she paints Tanya says "painting is

a way to center myself". She expresses herself through art spanning style and medium. She says that "watercolor feels like home" but works in acrylics and other mediums especially for larger pieces. She sees herself as a modern day itinerant painter capturing the world as she sees it and inspired by life around her. "My intent is to show people a new way to see", Tanya explains. She has done several mural sized pieces including one of the only portraits of Mary Ball Washington which is visible on Sophia Street coming into town across the William Street Bridge. She is also the artist behind the iconic Fredericksburg Painting which is 4' x 8' and depicts a view of Fredericksburg as seen looking across the river from Chatham in the 1800's. Her work hangs in private and corporate collections

by Alayna Stiffler Heart racing, gas fumes fills the air, more cars, longer commutes. Why did they choose our roads to travel for their vacation? Sigh! Thoughts of beaches, history, amusement parks and sunshine adds to the sounds air conditioning, car games, music playing and people rushing to start their vacation away from their routine of daily traffic. For the locals, longer commutes, minor to major accidents, road construction, decreased rates of speed and more vehicles to get in their way. Results: Drivers grip the steering wheel, yell, communicate with their hands. To a local there is nothing more frustrating then someone in their way on the familiar roads they travel on every day. On a recent business trip to Washington D.C., I was one of those drivers on an unknown road to an unfamiliar destination. Leaving three hours earlier than the Google Map estimated arrival time, I still arrived a half hour later at my destination due to added traffic from an event in D.C. Three resources, GPS, Google Maps and my spouse and not one showed the same route. In the middle of trying to figure out which lane I should be in, I received a nasty email from another driver because she believed I cut her off, when in reality, I thought she waved me in. Guess that wave was not a wave, but her email definitely stated her frustration that I was switching lanes and she was now going to be late for work. How did she get my email, you might ask? Well I advertise my business on my vehicle, like many businesses do. At least I didn’t read the email until I arrived at my destination. I am sure that would have added more stress to my drive. In retrospect, I use to be one of those drivers and if email was in existence when I was younger, I would have been the emailing a lot of drivers. Thinking back, my mom would said she was going to kiss the ground when we got out of a vehicle, my dad always
offered to drive and once a friend warned people to hide under the dashboard. I lived life in a hurry and drove the same way. Fast forwarding and wanting to teach my children the importance of being kind, I have learned to offer traveling acts of kindness. When I see someone slowing down or flipping signals to switch lanes, I remind myself that they probably do not live here and need some help and the greatest gift I can give to them is room for them to make their journey easier. So what, if I have to sit at the light for an extra minute, will that really change my day? Now when I see someone inpatient or in a hurry, I quickly say a prayer for their protection and everyone around them for safety. Their story may be the same as mine years ago or their story can be something that bears an urgency to get to a destination quickly. A traveling act of kindness is to always remember that a license plate with a state name does not mean they are familiar with the road that you are traveling, the GPS may be driving them in circle and many times location is not easily found. Even when someone else is in the car every street address cannot be read or even found as you are trying to find your destination. Give a random gift today and enjoy your vacation along the way. Hearty Lentil Soup with Landjäger and Winter Toasted Couscous Salad About The Bavarian Chef The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg brings hearty German fare and warm hospitality to the historic railroad station in Old Town Fredericksburg. Owned and operated by the Thalwitz family, The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg captures the German spirit of Gemütlichkeit. All food is prepared fresh on site from Thalwitz family recipes. When Eckhard and Bruni Thalwitz opened the first Bavarian Chef in Madison, Virginia, in 1974, it quickly became a local favorite, renowned for its incredible portions of authentic German cuisine and genuine hospitality. Their son Jerome has owned and operated the Madison restaurant since 1987 and is its executive chef. In May 2010, Jerome and Christine Thalwitz opened The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg at the train station in downtown Fredericksburg. In the heyday of rail travel in Germany, the restaurants in the bahnhofs, or train stations, were a gathering place for the community, where long-time residents, newcomers and visitors alike could enjoy a delicious meal and the company of good friends. Whether you choose to visit Madison, the “country cousin”, or Fredericksburg, “the city sister”, the Thalwitz family hopes to serve you soon!
