In an attempt to provide our client a flexible plan which can open up or close down as needed, this gut rehab consolidates all of the typical functions of a home into a limited number of simplified elements that also house ways to close and open the spaces of the condo. These clearly defined elements free the condo of visual clutter by architectural multitasking. They simultaneously create interest as sculptural objects, define space, neatly conceal practical programmatic requirements, and house pocket doors and folding partitions.

In concert with this strategy of reduction, and in an attempt to create a stripped down, yet warm environment, the palette of finishes was limited to just a few natural materials such as wood and stone. The overall effect of the finished space is one of a cozy, inviting minimalism. One of the most important requirements housed by the aforementioned “elements are a series of concealed doors; some pocket, some folding, that can be pulled closed or pushed open, to open and close the space of the condo for privacy or openness as desired.

This two story addition opens up to the relative privacy of the back yard on this wider than normal Chicago lot. Through the use of cedar siding and a modern architectural language, the addition is a sculptural object distinctly different from the original building. The resulting contrast creates a powerful and complementary dialogue between old and new, wood and masonry, modern and vernacular. The three foot cantilever around the entirety of the new structure creates a visually floating effect which heightens the effect of that which is "addition" as an autonomous object. Punched openings in the south facade playfully frame views of the neighboring ornate and substantial church. These smaller punched openings paired with the primary opening facing the rear yard which itself frames the main and most dramatic view, can be compared to a camera obscura whose purpose is to project the entire outside world into a dark box.

Gut rehab of a Chicago Gold Coast garden unit. Low ceilings, flooding, and awkwardly partitioned rooms were the primary concerns for this project. The floor plan was completely wiped and furniture was used for spatial separation instead of partitions, except for the CEO’s office which had glass partitions. The end result was an open space that helped reduce the cramped feeling of the low ceilings. In order to managed the water damage and flooding, a dimple barrier was added along the exterior brick walls and a gravel draining pit was added along the inside perimeter of exterior walls.

observation tower

academic

The site is located in Grant Park in Chicago, IL. The observation tower concept is based on framing views. These views would be experienced as the user moved vertically through the space through use of apertures along the staircase and also experienced at each platform through the widening and narrowing the walls. Aperture and opening sizes are determined based on the viewed object’s distance from the tower as well as the object’s overall importance. Using a parametric program, the tower was tied into the site. This allowed the tower to be dragged anywhere in Grant Park and have the tower automatically morph into a new shape that would result based on changing views and object distances, creating quick and efficient studies.

traveling restaurant

academic

This floating restaurant travels along the Seine River and is anchored in Paris, France for six months. The restaurant expands into six floating islands that act as dining pavilions for adventurous patrons. Using a system of pins and anchors, interior walls are able to pushed and pulled into a variety of complex forms. This allows for the bi-weekly rotation of chefs to have maximum control and customization of the restaurant through the exploration of different, interesting spatial environments. Views in and out of this restaurant are controlled by perforated steel panels. these panels can be easily adjusted into a multiple number of schemes to manipulate both the light quality and the intimacy space.

private art gallery

Sculpture Terrace Plan

academic

Mezzanine Plan

The private art gallery is located on a heavily wooded, gently sloping site in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The structure itself fully embraces the slanting hill by having the ground floor terrace off while following the contours of the site. Uninhibited by walls, each terrace becomes a part of a free flowing sculpture garden, firmly uniting the architecture with the forest exterior. The architectural problem of space and proportion became the main focus of the project. Extensive evaluation of criculation, both mezzanine size and positioning, staircase placements, and materials, all in relation to structure, were executed through use of large scale models during the entire development.

private art gallery

Understanding painting and sculpture in their relationship with architecture was key to the success of the gallery. By using a two way structural system, a clear span was achieved, allowing for massive pieces of art to freely populate the architecture and allow them to not only occupy the space, but become the space.

automated parking / health club tower

academic

The health club facility and automated parking structure is located on the western bank of Manhattan. The site contains the NY highline, and this building is designed to fully engage this element. The skin of the health club acts as a rock climbing wall that is part of the health club program. The rock climbing wall is the tallest in the world, achieving a maximum height of 135’-0. People scaling the building becomes one of the main attractions on the highline. The parking structure is enclosed in glass, allowing the cars of the car share program to be on display. This helps generate publicity for the program as well becoming a point of itnerest on the highline.

multigrain picture frame

academic

The handmade picture frame is cut from a piece of jatoba wood at a variety of angles. The different angular cuts allow for numerous wood grain patterns to be exposed, highlighting all the natural beauty this tropical wood has to offer. The acrylic frames are held in place by eight rare earth magnets. Each magnet has enough strength to lift a four pound block of steel, ensuring the picture never loses its position.

bicycle coffee table The bicycle is a model from the 70’s that was rusted, broken, and unused. After cleaning the parts and replacing broken pieces, the bicycle became the main framework for the table. The surfaces consist of plywood laminated around the bicycle hub. Both surfaces spin, acting as lazy-susans. The brakes act as a guide to prevent the wheels from tipping.

color installation

academic

Color, reflection, and light were all explored using a restricted amount of building materials. The concept of the natural heating and cooling process within the structure Crown Hall was applied to this excercise. Cool colors flow upward from the breeze vents while warm colors radiate downward from the windows. The project worked to demonstrate the constant conflict between the two opposing elements as they blend together in an endless effort to reach equilibrium.
