In the deep ocean the waves are small. As they approach the coast the waves get bigger and more dangerous. The tsunami waves can cause lots of damage when they reach land.
How can we protect ourselves? We cannot stop tsunamis coming, but we can protect ourselves by: - Have a disaster plan and know whether you’re at risk for danger. - Plan an evacuation route and prepare a disaster supplies kit. - During the tsunami, you should follow the instructions and try to get to higher ground and as far inland as you can. - After the tsunami, you should stay out of the building if water remains around it, and if you enter your home, use extreme caution for gas leak or fire or electricity hazard.
