Mayon Volcano


Facts  How does it erupt?  A pool of molten rock is below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur ( take place ).  How does it form?  There is a solid body rock called mantle, found between the molten iron core and the thin crust at the surface, deep down the earth. When the rocks from the mantle melts, it moves through the crust, to the surface, and causes Volcanoes to erupt by releasing pent-up( held back ) gases.

 How many volcanoes erupt each year?  Around 50-70 are erupting each year.

 How many volcanoes are there?  For the past 10,000 years about 1500 volcanoes are known.


Which is the most active volcano?  The world’s most active volcano is located in Hawaii, it is called Kilauea.  Since 1952 there had been 34 eruptions.  In 1790, a big eruption killed over eighty people.


Lava ď‚— Lava can travel 100 to 200 miles (161km to 322km), it reaches 1,204 degrees. ď‚— Lava changes colors, from bright orange to bright red to dark red to brownish red.


Mayon Volcano  The Mayon volcano is located in Mayon Volcano National Park, Malilipot, Philippines.  It is known as the perfect cone.  It is 2462m high, it erupted 47 times since 1616.
