EASTER 1

Welcome Thank you for joining us today as we gather together to worship our Savior and King, Jesus. This service is a liturgical service, meaning the congregation is an active participant. Theologian James K.A. Smith writes, liturgy “shapes and constitutes our identity by forming our most basic attunement to the world... our ultimate love/desire is shaped by practices, not [only] ideas that are merely communicated to us.” So we orient our heart and mind through the rhythm of poetry, song, vows, music, bread and wine. And through that process, we immerse ourselves into the ancient story of the Christian faith.

Preparation As we gather together into this sacred time, quietly consider anew the mystery of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Just as Jesus the Christ was present two thousand years ago walking with and among his people, so we believe that in the gathering together of God’s holy church, Jesus meets us here as our risen Lord and King.

The Prelude

Call to Worship Minister Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King. Rejoice and sing now, all the earth round, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King. Very early on the morning after Sabbath, when the sun had just risen, they came to the tomb. People The stone was rolled away! Alleluia! Minister The splendor of Christ risen from the dead shines on us today. We are his people redeemed by his blood. Jesus has risen from the tomb; let us sing hymns of praise to the Lord our God. People The Lord is risen as he promised! Alleluia! Celebration Service | Page 2

Praise Songs “CELEBRATE JESUS” Text and Music: Gary Oliver Celebrate Jesus, celebrate. Celebrate Jesus, celebrate. Celebrate Jesus, celebrate. Celebrate Jesus, celebrate. He is risen, He is risen and He lives forevermore. He is risen, He is risen; Come on and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

Why do we sing in church? As God's people gather for worship, we focus our attention on God and away from ourselves by singing together. We respond with thanksgiving to God, because we have hope. And we sing because it is the best and most complete response that we can utter.

The Rector’s Welcome*

At this time, children are invited to come forward to receive a blessing and then dismissed to Sunday School or Nursery.

The Ministry of the Word* After each Lesson, the Reader will say Reader People

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

First Lesson .................................................. Acts 10:34-‐43 GNB

As Gospel-‐Centered Anglicans, we believe the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies his people. Therefore we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship to discern the will of our Father on earth as it is in heaven.

The Psalm ....................................................................................... Psalm 118:1-‐2,14-‐24 (NRSV) 1 O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” 14 The LORD is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. 15 There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the LORD does valiantly; 16 the right hand of the LORD is exalted; the right hand of the LORD does valiantly.” 17 I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. 18 The LORD has punished me severely, but he did not give me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Hearts to heaven and voices raise; Sing to God a hymn of gladness, Sing to God a hymn of praise. He who on the cross as Savior for the world’s salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, Now is risen from the dead. 2. Now the iron bars are broken, Christ from death to life is born; Glorious life, and life immortal, On this resurrection morn. Christ has triumphed, and we conquer By His mighty enterprise; We with Him to life eternal by His resurrection rise.

The Sermon: Today, Does Jesus Matter REV. JONATHAN G. SMITH, LEAD PASTOR

Hear God’s Message. Pray for the readers, the preacher, the witnesses and others who may bring a word from God. Pray that the ears and hearts of everyone will be open and respond to God.

Sermon Guide: John 20:1–18 (ESV) — 1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. EASTER 1

The Prayers of the People* Let us give glory to Christ the Lord, who became our teacher and example and our brother. Let us pray to him, saying: Victorious King, Hear our Prayer. Victorious King, Hear our Prayer. Lord Jesus, you became like us in all things but sin; teach us how to share with others their joy and sorrow. That our love may grow deeper every day. Victorious King, Hear our Prayer. Help us to feed you in feeding the hungry. And to give you drink in giving drink to the thirsty. Victorious King, Hear our Prayer.

Prayer is a vital act in Christian worship. To aid in preparing the congregation for prayer, the church developed litanies dating back to the early church of Antioch. A l itany is a prayer form in which a minister says or sings a petition followed by a congregational response. Prayer doesn’t change God-‐ prayer changes us. Through prayer we are changed and transformed into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. To pray means that we must be open and willing to change.

You raised Lazarus from the sleep of death. Grant that those who have died the death of sin may rise again through faith and repentance. Victorious King, Hear our Prayer. Inspire all believers to follow you with greater zeal. Through your blessed example and the power of your Spirit. Victorious King, Hear our Prayer Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. Spontaneous prayers are offered here. Minister Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer List Isaac, Don, Diane, Linda D, Mindy, Ceil, James, Richard, Patrick, Jean, Bette Jean Crouse, Teresa, Barbie, Becky, Calvin, Carole’s daughter Rebekah, Mark, Jennifer, Janelle, Jenna, Regine, Sharon, Dawn, Carlene, Brenda, Carl, Vanessa and Ryan. Celebration Service | Page 12

Confession and Absolution*

Repent. Because sin is so pervasive in our lives, examine your conduct by the rule of God’s Commandments. Repent of your sin, and forgive those who have sinned against you so that your Heavenly Father may forgive you. Fully receive God’s Love in your heart, mind, body and spirit.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those, who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving The following communion service has been adapted in form and language from the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. “The Doxology” Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is just and right so to do.

The Sursum Corda

“The Eucharist is the definitive action practiced in the Christian community that keeps Jesus Christ before us as the Savior of the world and our Savior, and ourselves as sinners in need of being saved. The Eucharist is the sacramental act that pulls us into actual material participation with Christ (eating and drinking bread and wine) as he gives his very life “for us and for our salvation” (cf., the Nicene Creed)... The Eucharist puts Jesus in his place: dying on the cross and giving us that sacrificed l ife. And it puts us in our place: opening our hands and receiving the remission of our sins, which is our salvation.”

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who took on our mortal flesh to reveal His glory; that he might bring us out of darkness and into his own glorious light. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full, full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Celebration Service | Page 14

The Prayer of Humble Access The People stand or kneel. The Celebrant continues

We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen

The Prayer of Consecration All praise and glory is yours, God our heavenly Father, because of your tender mercy, you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and instituted, and in his Holy Gospel commanded us to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. And now, O merciful Father; in your great goodness, Hear us, we most humbly pray, granting that when receiving this sacrament of bread and wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood

The Words of Institution On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

EASTER 1

Lord and heavenly Father, with this bread and wine we celebrate the memorial instituted by your beloved Son, remembering his passion and death, his resurrection and ascension, and his promise to come again. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his Blood, we and your whole Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion, making us one body with him that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And here we offer to you, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Ministry of Communion Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God, take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed upon in your heart by faith and with thanksgiving. All Christians are welcome to receive communion. Note: Redeemer Anglican Church uses wine for communion. Please follow your conscience when participating in communion.

Recessional Hymn “WORSHIP CHRIST, THE RISEN KING” Text: Jack Hayford Music: Henry T. Smart 1. Rise, O Church, and lift your voices; Christ has conquered death and hell. Sing as all the earth rejoices; Resurrection anthems swell. Come and worship, come and worship; Worship Christ, the Risen King! 2. See the tomb where death had laid Him; Empty now, its mouth declares: “Death and I could not contain Him, For the throne of life He shares.” Come and worship, come and worship; Worship Christ, the risen King! 3. Hear the earth protest and tremble; See the stone removed with power. All hell’s minions may assemble, But cannot withstand His hour. He has conquered, He has conquered; Christ the Lord, the risen King!

4. Doubt may lift its head to murmur, Scoffers mock and sinners jeer; But the truth proclaims a wonder Thoughtful hearts receive with cheer. He is risen, He is risen; Now receive the risen King! 5. We acclaim Your life, O Jesus; Now we sing Your victory. Sin and hell may seek to seize us, But Your conquest keeps us free. Standin triumph, stand in triumph; Worship Christ, the risen King!
