Prayer for Generosity “Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve, To give and not count the cost, To fight and not heed the wounds, To toil and not seek for rest, To labor and not ask for reward, except To know that I am doing your will.” St. Ignatius of Loyala 1491-1556
EASTER WEEK 5
18 MAY 2014
T R I N I T Y A N G L I C A N C H U R C H
Welcome Thank you for joining us today as we gather together to worship our Savior and King, Jesus. This service is a liturgical service, meaning the congregation is an active participant. Theologian James K.A. Smith writes, liturgy “shapes and constitutes our identity by forming our most basic attunement to the world... our ultimate love/desire is shaped by practices, not [only] ideas that are merely communicated to us.” So we orient our heart and mind through the rhythm of poetry, song, vows, music, bread and wine. And through that process, we immerse ourselves into the ancient story of the Christian faith. In the liturgy, the congregation participates in the bold liturgy. During the Communion portion of our service, all baptized Christians are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Restrooms are located in the outside breezeway located next to the parking lot. At this time please silent your phones or noisemakers.
Preparation As we gather together into this sacred time, quietly consider anew the mystery of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Just as Jesus the Christ was present two thousand years ago walking with and among his people, so we believe that in the gathering together of God’s holy church, Jesus meets us here as our risen Lord and King.
Prelude Call to Worship Celebrant People Celebrant People
The splendor of Christ risen from the dead Has shone on us redeemed by his blood! Christ has become our paschal sacrifice. Let us shout in glad adoration: Alleluia!

The Call to Worship is an invitation into the unique activity of worship. Our primary activity in the worship service is to participate in the gift exchange of worship itself, by hearing God’s Word, by offering prayers and praise, and by receiving spiritual nourishment offered at the altar of our Lord.

The Processional Hymn – “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” 1. O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace. 2. Jesus! The name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease, ‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears, ‘Tis life and health and peace.
The Processional is the act of movement in worship by a group of people for the sake of all. In the Entrance, the procession symbolizes the entire congregation coming before the Lord.”
3. He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoner free. His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood availed for me. 4. Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb, Your loosened tongues employ; Ye blind, behold your Savior come; And leap, ye lame, for joy. 5. My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread thro’ all the earth abroad, The honors of Thy name.

The Summary of the Law Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-‐40 Celebrant People Celebrant

Praise Songs “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” 1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with thee; Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever wilt be. Chorus
Why do we sing in church? As God's people gather for worship, we focus our attention on God and away from ourselves by singing together. We respond with thanksgiving to God, because we have hope. And we sing because it is the best and most complete response that we can utter.
Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me! 2. Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above. Join with all nature in manifold witness, To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Chorus 3. First Lesson ............................................................ Acts 4:32-‐35 Second Lesson ....................................................... 2 Cor. 9:6-‐15
As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies his people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of scripture – a practice vital to building up the community of faith
The Psalm ....................................................................................... Psalm 31:1-‐5, 15-‐16 Read Responsively by Half Verse 1. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stonghold; for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me. 4. Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, for you are my tower of strength. 5. Into your hands I commend my spirit, for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. 15.My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16. Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your loving-‐kindness save me.

Sermon Guide “Generosity and Grace” Sermon Text: 2 Corinthians 9:6-‐15 (The Voice Bible) 6 But I will say this to encourage your generosity: the one who plants little harvests little, and the one who plants plenty harvests plenty. 7 Giving grows out of the heart—otherwise, you’ve reluctantly grumbled “yes” because you felt you had to or because you couldn’t say “no,” but this isn’t the way God wants it. For we know that “God loves a cheerful giver.”8 God is ready to overwhelm you with more blessings than you could ever imagine so that you’ll always be taken care of in every way and you’ll have more than enough to share. 9 Remember what is written about the One who trusts in the Lord: He scattered abroad; He gave freely to the poor; His righteousness endures throughout the ages. 10 The same One who has put seed into the hands of the sower and brought bread to fill our stomachs will provide and multiply the resources you invest and produce an abundant harvest from your righteous actions. 11 You will be made rich in everything so that your generosity will spill over in every direction. Through us your generosity is at work inspiring praise and thanksgiving to God. 12 For this mission will do more than bring food and water to fellow believers in need—it will overflow in a cascade of praises and thanksgivings for our God. 13 When this mission reaches Jerusalem and meets with the approval of God’s people there, they will give glory to God because your confession of the gospel of the Anointed One led to obedient action and your generous sharing with them and with all exhibited your sincere concern. 14 Because of the extraordinary grace of God at work in you, they will pray for you and long for you. 15 Praise God for this incredible, unbelievable, indescribable gift! The Affirmation of Faith “The Nicene Creed” We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.
When we affirm our faith together, it reminds us that we are part of an ancient and global faith. This was the last great creed of the undivided church. The Nicene Creed forms the great theology of the Holy Trinity, the great drama of redemption, and the hope of restoration from sin through faith in Jesus Christ.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Prayers of the People* After each petition the following is said Minister People
Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.
Minister Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Confession and Absolution* All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Because sin is so pervasive in both our corporate and individual lives, Christians and non-‐Christians are called to come before the Father with honesty and transparency, confessing our brokenness in thought, word, and deed; and asking for both forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ...... Because of this, when the

Amen.
The Peace Celebrant People
The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And with your spirit.
Praise Song – “Speak, O Lord” 1. Speak, O Lord, as we come to You to receive the food of Your Holy Word. Take Your truth, plant it deep in us; Shape and fashion us in Your likeness, that the light of Christ might be seen today in our acts of love and our deeds of faith. Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us all Your purposes, for Your glory. 2. Teach us Lord full obedience, holy reverence, true humility. Test our thoughts and our attitudes in the radiance of Your purity. Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see Your majestic love and authority. Words of pow’r that can never fail; Let their truth prevail over unbelief. 3. Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds; Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us. Truths unchanged from the dawn of time, that will echo down through eternity. And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises; And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us. Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built and the earth is filled with Your glory. Page 10

The Prayer of Consecration
• Eugene Peterson, Christ
The Proclamation Celebrant All
“The Eucharist is the definitive action practiced in the Christian community that keeps Jesus Christ before us as the Savior of the world and our Savior, and ourselves as sinners in need of being saved. The Eucharist is the sacramental act that pulls us into actual material participation with Christ (eating and drinking bread and wine) as he gives his very life “for us and for our salvation” (cf., the Nicene Creed)... The Eucharist puts Jesus in his place: dying on the cross and giving us that sacrificed life. And it puts us in our place: opening our hands and receiving the remission of our sins, which is our salvation.”
Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed for us, once for all upon the cross. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Prayer of Humble Access* We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
