From the Tuesday Morning, January 3, 2012 This is basically a thankless job, but sometimes out of the blue someone says something nice about Lighthouse Point Magazine. This morning I was speaking with Patty Berian regarding her ad in our magazine, and we were wishing each other the very best in 2012, when she said, “Jon, I just love your magazine. Every month I send a copy up north to my mother who loves the photos and articles, and it brings back fond memories of time spent here.” Just those kind words from Patty were all I needed to start the year off right. All thoughts involving the complexities involved in meeting deadlines every month for almost ten years now seemed to disappear during that phone call. Still, after all this time, when a new issue comes off the press, I hold it my hand, look at the cover, smile and I think, “Hey, maybe this ain’t such a bad job, after all!” ❖ ❖ ❖ Well folks, somebody either stole or purchased my personal mailing list. So, if any LHP Magazine advertisers, friends or relatives are receiving another local magazine they did not request, please report it to me ASAP, and I shall take the necessary action!

A Fish Out of Water As I reflect back to 2002 when deciding what community in Broward County would be the best place to start a newsletter, my associate at the time, Patti Smith, said she had lived briefly in Lighthouse Point and thought it would be an ideal area to begin the publication. Little did I know at the time that Lighthouse Point was for the most part, a Republican community, so I decided to deal sparingly with political issues and concentrate on families and events. As an independent, I thought this a wise business decision and as a result the magazine has flourished. Periodically, I write a column called Accountability, which appears in this particular issue. And, as an independent, I believe I can view both the Democratic and Republican parties with unjaundiced aplomb. Surprisingly, the column has become popular, especially with those who ideology is not set in stone. The articles are meant to stir interest, and in some cases provoke readers to write back to me in response to critical issues. There is nothing better than a healthy dialogue in an attempt to find solutions in a world in turmoil. Yes, at times I do feel like a fish out of water, but when I do, I think of Mark Twain when he said, “I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters of religion and politics, a man’s reasoning powers are not above a monkey’s.” Jon Frangipane

Poet and Artist
Jane Ellen Glasser recently moved to Lighthouse Point and is in love with our city. She is a poet and artist who grew up in Greenwich Village, N.Y., studied at the Art Students League of New York, Sweet Briar College, and Oscar Kokoschka’s School of Vision in Salzburg, Austria. Glasser’s poetry books include,“Naming the Darkness,” “Light Persists” (winner of the Tampa Review Prize for Poetry), “On the Corner of Yesterday,” and her prizewinning chapbook, “The Long Life,” which is due to be released by Poetica Publishing Company in the winter of 2012. Fairly recently, Glasser has moved into a new art form, finding fascinating faces and figures in the beautifully tangled roots of the ficus tree. She refers to creatures that she finds lying within the tightly woven limbs and roots as Root People. As a member of the Fort Lauderdale Writers’ Group for two years, her poetry readings have left most listeners completely awestruck. Not only is Glasser’s poetry in a class by itself, but when she reads her works, each spoken passage can be easily compared to the feeling one gets when listening to the magic of a Chopin waltz.
Jane Ellen Glasser and her daughter, Dr. Hara Glasser-Frei, also a resident of Lighthouse Point.
On this new journey with color pencils, Glasser takes us visually to places never before seen, just has she’s done with her pen, and with a special voice that weaves her words into unforgettable tapestries. As a new resident of Lighthouse Point, we thought it appropriate to introduce Jane Ellen Glasser to you in this way. We are proud to have her as a member of our fine community.
Q: How did you first become fascinated with the ficus tree? Glasser: My love affair with banyans, a fig tree of the genus Ficus, started last March on a visit to Pinecrest Gardens,“the crown jewel of the village’s park system.” Boca Raton’s Town Hall parking lot features magnificent specimens where, in the ’30s and ’40s, folks gathered to discuss news and avoid the heat. On my daily walks, I soon realized that fig trees, partcularly strangler figs, are ubiquitous in south Florida. A beauty that I have often photographed graces a home on Lighthouse Point Drive and 42nd Street, two blocks from my residence.
Q: What inspired you to create the Root People drawings? Glasser: When I moved to Florida two years ago, one of my early purchases was the field guide “The Trees of Florida.” I had left maples, dogwoods, magnolias and sycamores behind and became fascinated with the rich variety of palms, and fig trees, especially the strangler fig and banyan with their aerial roots and long beards. Since

The Ro o t Pe o p le Draw ings o f J ane G lasse r childhood, I have delighted in discovering images in the commonplace, creatures in cloud shapes, demons in the shadows on night’s walls, faces in the whorls of my home’s redwood ceilings. So it was no surprise when an entire colony of people showed up in the roots of ficus trees.
Q:
How do you go about the creative process when using color pencils?
Glasser:
Discovery has always been central to the creative process for me. Whether I’m working in art or poetry, I never start with a fixed notion of how the finished product will look. As Robert Frost wisely admonishes, if you know where you are going to end up,“No surprise for the writer, no surprise for the reader.” With The Root People drawings, I began by letting my eyes explore an enlarged photograph I had taken of part of a tree. Using charcoal and Prismacolor colored pencils, I’d fill in what my imagination would find implicit in the tangle of roots. Image by image, torsos, arms, legs, hearts, animals appeared. Sometimes my hand reached for bright colors—violet blue, Spanish orange, mulberry, crimson red, blazing yellow. Two of the works wanted little more than charcoal and white. I tried to remain open, letting the unconscious have a say in what the eye would see. Continues on page 40

Pompano Beach Fire Fighter Mourned After Aerial Ladder Fall
Firefighter, William Elliott.
Colleagues, family and friends are mourning the death of a Pompano Beach firefighter who fell to his death Friday afternoon after falling off a 100-foot ladder during a climbing exercise. The firefighter, William Elliott, a member of the department since 1989, died at North Broward Medical Center. Fire Chief Harry Small said the hearts of his men and women are broken. Elliott was using a harness during the ladder climb but as trained, he unhooked to come down the ladder. He was near the top of the ladder when he fell. As Elliott’s friends, family and co-workers consoled each other, his body was driven in a Pompano Beach Fire Rescue Truck in a caravan to the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office. Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher said Elliott will be missed.“He was so kind and so patient especially with our residents when he would go on a rescue call.” Fire investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. Friends said news of his death might have caused his mother to have a heart attack. Now those who loved Elliott are dealing with a double dose of pain. Elliott leaves behind his parents, a brother and a sister. All are thoughts and prayers are with the family at this tragic time of loss.

Is It Time For Robo-cat? A conversation with my cat By Jon Frangipane Berkel and Me Have you been noticing how humans seem to becoming more like robots and robots becoming more like humans? I recently saw a T.V. show that featured an electronic cat called Robo-Cat that is equipped with touch sensors that let it engage in such real-life feline behavior as purring, moving its legs when you stroke its belly, and sleeping a lot. It will not, as far as I know, scratch your face, bite your toes (as my cat does), or catch mice. For cat lovers who dread the tedious and smelly job of caring for a litter box, having a second cat with electronic innards sounded like a splendid idea. I thought I’d tell my cat Berkel about it. “Berkel,” did you happen to catch that T.V. show that featured an electronic cat called Robo-Cat that does everything you do…except poop?” “No,” said Berkel, “but I saw a T.V. show that featured a lifelike robotic man that does everything you do…except beat his cat over the head with a broom, and chase him around the house with the vacuum hose! “But that’s the only way you know how to listen to me. Why don’t you learn how to listen, instead of talking back at me! I begged. Berkel took a moment to scratch his ear and said, “Sorry, I think I have wax in my ear. I didn’t hear a word you said. And, by the way, on T.V. I recently saw an electronic, life-like woman called Robo-Chick that its creator said has almost everything a real woman has, but wears a special mute button to stop her from talking back. Didn’t you tell me you wish your lovely Felicia had a mute button, so you could turn her off when you’re watching football?” “Yes indeed, I did say that. You see, for a man to be able to enjoy a football game it takes a certain degree of concentration that women have trouble understanding. This would be the perfect time to have a Robo-Chick in my life with a mute button.” “I thought that would be of interest to a man who must be in full control and can’t shut up and fiercely insane,” Berkel replied. At times like these, I picture Berkel in the microwave oven, peering out the little window, pleading for forgiveness. But I’m a rational man, and perhaps Berkel may be right. Maybe this was something I should at least ponder. A football game without interruption would be a dream come true! I remember one time when the Giants and Green Bay were tied
16
Lighthouse Point Magazine • www.lhpmag.com
in the last minute of a playoff game and the Giants were about to kick a 60-yard field goal when Felicia came in the room singing an ungodly version of Happy Birthday. Unquestionably, Felicia possesses, let’s say, the proper parts placed perfectly in the proper places (say that fast three times), so I was quite happy and satisfied with the visual part of our relationship. But as she entered the room with the cake and singing, it was like a stupendous explosive force in the form of a verbal tsunami had struck me in the chest and left me desperately gasping for air and praying I’d die quickly by drowning. Well, to my misfortune, I missed seeing that record-breaking kick, as Felicia stepped in front of the T.V., singing with a voice, unlike Marilyn Monroe, but more like someone running their fingernails across a chalkboard. Now, if Felicia didn’t rate a mute button at that moment, nobody did. Berkel paced the room waiting for an answer. “So, tell me, are we going to resolve this hair-brained Robo-Cat scheme of yours, because I’m losing my patience?!” Berkel shouted. Berkel and I rarely agree on anything, so this was hardly an unexpected discourse between us. “Listen, don’t take this personally, Berkel, but I’ve been toying with the idea, just toying you understand…” “Oh, about purchasing a robo-cat? Is that what this whole conversation is about? Am I going to be replaced by a pointless, puny, poopless piece of…” “Easy, easy, my loyal friend. I was just planning a 30-day trial period with the Robo-Cat that I would call ‘Herkel,’ in this way you’d have Herkel for company and I’d have Berkel and Herkel to keep me company. You would have a wonderful 30 days to get acquainted,“ I explained. “Acquainted? You expect me, a real live cat, to be commiserating with a heartless, bloodless, battery-operated, mechanical bunch of electronic gadgetry? “It’s the way of the future, Berkel! Don’t fight it. Embrace it. Computers will some day rule the world and make all the decisions for us. You and I are just like bits of sand, swept up in a storm of complete idiocy. And soon, we will have no names, just numbers. No telling what fate has in store for us. There’s no ‘somewhere over the rainbow.’ There’s no magic potion. We are doomed. Berkel just smiled and said,“What do you say, pal, let’s get a pizza and watch some football.” ◆
Take heart.

A C C O U N TA B I L I T Y Vol. 8 By Jon Frangipane
Congress Has a 9% Approval Rating, and Many Americans Stand at the Precipice of Falling into a Life-Destroying Abyss, and Here’s What We Get for Our Tax Dollars, Folks: FLIP-FLOPPERS They all parade on stage during the debates with complete disregard for the truth—a smug, shameless, self-serving, fingerpointing, defiant, self-aggrandizing, truth- manipulating, uncompromising bunch of uncontrollable flip-flopping candidates, every single one obviously unqualified to be President of the United States. America’s image certainly wasn’t helped during the early campaign by the likes of historian Sarah Palin, Constitution expert Christine O’Donnell, and more recent candidate to take a dive, pizza pusher Herman Cain, when each one continually stuffed their feet into their respective mouths with such amazing ease, it became welcome fodder for Saturday Night Live, and an embarrassment to third grade students all over America. Now, here we are in the year 2012, and in the next presidential election the American people will have the wonderful privilege to elect an erratic blowhard flip-flopper of their choice, coming from all directions, unless some new faces rise from the ashes.
The documents were filed with the Clark County Recorder’s Office between 2005 and 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported. According to Lawrence, two loan officers were running the massive robo-signing scheme, saying they forged signatures on tens of thousands of default notices. Nevada now alleges that Gary Trafford, 49, of Irvine, Calif., and Gerri Sheppard, 62, of Santa Ana, Calif., directed their employees to forge foreclosure documents, notarize the signatures on the documents they had forged and file the fraudulent paperwork in order to begin foreclosures on homes throughout the county. Trafford and Sheppard have been indicted on more than 600 counts of offering false instruments for recording, false certification on certain instruments and notarization of the signature of a person not in the presence of a notary public. Authorities are currently negotiating the terms of their surrender, KSNV MyNews 3 reported. According to RealtyTrac, Nevada has had the highest foreclosure rate in the nation.
When Is A Crime Not A Crime?
Corporations Running Our Country?
“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander” is a familiar phrase we’ve heard since our childhood. If that phrase be applied to those in Congress, many members would be behind bars serving time, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker John Boehner, who recently made huge killings in the stock market. Although insider trading is theoretically illegal for members of Congress, apparently current loopholes effectively make it legal, thereby allowing members of Congress to be privy to insider trading information. I suggest either we throw Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner into the pokey and throw the key into the Potomac, or maybe release all the insider traders that were sent to prison for the very same crime. Poor old Hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, who founded the Galleon Group, had to report to a federal prison in Massachusetts to begin serving his 11-year sentence on insider trading. The former billionaire received and traded on inside information about corporate earnings as well as mergers and acquisitions. If this man had committed the exact same acts from an office on Capitol Hill, rather than on Madison Avenue in New York, he could now be out on the campaign trail, instead of using his talents to possibly swindle a fellow inmate. He is reportedly writing his memoirs (surprise, surprise!) and planning his release within five years for ‘good’ behavior.
You bet your life they are! Warning that “American democracy in endangered,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) proposed a constitutional amendment to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that allowed unrestricted and secret campaign spending by corporations on U.S. elections. The first constitutional amendment ever proposed by Sanders during his two decades in Congress would reverse the narrow 5-to4 ruling in Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission. In that controversial decision almost two years ago, justices gave corporations the same First Amendment free-speech rights as people. “There comes a time when an issue is so important that the only way to address it is by a constitutional amendment,” Sanders said of the effort to override the court decision that he labeled “a complete undermining of democracy.” Sanders’ Saving American Democracy Amendment would make clear that corporations are not entitled to the same constitutional rights as people and that corporations may be regulated by Congress and state legislatures. It also would preserve the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of the press. It would incorporate a centuryold ban on corporate campaign donations to candidates, and establish broad authority for Congress and states to regulate spending in elections. Robert Weissman, the president of Public Citizen, praised the proposal. “Sen. Sanders’ amendment returns us to shared understandings that democracy is for people. Public Citizen applauds and endorses the amendment, and thanks Sen. Sanders for his long-time campaign to reduce excessive corporate power.” Marge Baker of People For the American Way said the Sanders amendment “takes a comprehensive approach to stopping the flood of corporate money in our electoral system. Our democracy belongs to all of the people, not just the wealthy, and not to large and powerful corporate interests,” she added. A proposed amendment originating in Congress must be approved by a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate in order to be submitted for consideration by the states. Ratification by three-fourths of the states is required to amend the Constitution. Will any bill be passed? Don’t hold your breath.
Robo-Signing Looters This should warm the cockles of your heart! Tracy Lawrence, the notary public who blew the whistle on a massive foreclosure fraud scheme, was found dead in her Las Vegas home on Nov. 28, MSNBC reported. Cause of death has not yet been determined, but Officer Jacinto Rivera, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, said the case was not being investigated as homicide. She was 43. Earlier this month, Lawrence came forward and admitted to the Nevada Attorney General’s Office that she notarized 25,000 fraudulent documents for Lender Processing Services, a Florida company used by most major banks to process home repossessions.

Tale of Trolls By Donna Torrey There I was, down and dirty in the garden when my son walked in on me, hair frizzed and falling from my hat, weeds grasped tightly in very grubby hands.“Mom,” he said, “Do you know what you are? You’re a Garden Troll.” That comment brought a big grin to my face, because, it was absolutely true! I am a garden troll. I would have preferred the name Gnome, as it sounds slightly more refined; however, I wear the name troll proudly and you could say that one must earn the title. In folklore, Gnomes,Trolls, and Fairies are protectors of the garden, warding off evil. Figuratively speaking, that is what we gardeners do, if we are any good at it. Weeding, pruning, and maintaining a garden do in fact stop a lot of bad things from happening. Our plants rely on us to maintain some order, otherwise, the weeds will take over and certain un-pruned shrubs and
trees will be errant and brutish. Without proper water, fertilizing and mulching, our garden won’t thrive. You see, we are the peacekeepers of our garden world. If you are yourself a troll, then you know we must be out there in force right now, as many weed seeds are germinating, and as any troll worth her salt knows, a baby weed pulled today, eliminates hundreds of them a month from now! Organic fertilizer, and a good thick layer of mulch, leaves and compost applied now, nourishes the plants and soil. It will also prevent many weed seeds from sprouting, and will protect the soil from the drying heat soon to come. So, fellow trolls get out there in the garden and fight the good fight, knowing that because of us, angels gather here.

Stray Thoughts: The Facebook Postings, Vol. II By Alan Williamson Occasionally someone will come up to me and say, “Alan, why don’t you gathered some of your more thoughtful Facebook postings and present them in a column for people to enjoy over a cinnamon bun or some flatbread crackers?” My response is always the same: “Thanks, Mom, that’s very sweet of you, and you have some flatbread cracker on your chin.” Here then, without any further preamble, is my second collection of Facebook postings. Enjoy with a sensible snack and a beverage of your choosing. • People say that swimming in a lake where there's alligators is dangerous. But I say driving a car is much more dangerous. Especially if there’s an alligator hiding in the backseat. • A good laugh significantly decreases the stress chemicals cortisol and epinephrine say researchers at Loma Linda University. Wait . . . Loma Linda? BWA-HA-HA-HA!! (Hey, it worked.) • Is the phrase “vicious cycle” or “vicious circle”? Either way, the viciousness must stop before another cycle (or circle) takes us from bad to worse. Is it “bad to worse” or “bad to worst”? You know what? Forget I even asked. This is starting to feel like a vicious circle (or cycle). • BOB—such a strange name. It’s spelled the same forward and backward and when you say it a bunch of times in a row it sounds weirder and weirder. • Soft and monotonous favorites to numb your nagging fears and doubts: You’re listening to Breezy 93. • Mahi Mahi? Sure, sure. • Who am I to ask you to quit smoking? I’m the guy who taught Tina Turner how to dance. I’m also the guy who led the National League in triples back in 1986 while playing for the Chicago White Sox. And while we’re on the subject, I’m also the guy who invented the double zipper zip lock freezer bag. So there you have it. Feeling pretty stupid about now aren’t you, tar breath? • People compare me to Matt Lauer. They say I’m no Matt Lauer. • Dear TV Answer Man: My wife and I used to enjoy a show Thursday nights on NBC called “Steinfeld” or “Seinholdt.” It featured a wacky neighbor named Cosmo and a fat guy named Newman. The Garden Lady Says… Be My Valentine By Donna Torrey
Valentines Day is coming up, and I have to say, it’s one of my favorite holidays. Who can argue about a day that celebrates love? Flowers are the traditional gift, along with cards and chocolate. I love them all! However, cards are read and disposed of, chocolate is eaten, but flowers can live on. Consider giving your special someone a living flower, as opposed to cut ones. There are some amazing choices out there right now. If you are a rose lover consider the heirloom varieties which are easy to grow and covered with multitudes of true rosebuds in every color. Orchids also make a great gift. They are long lasting in bloom, and when finished make a fantastic addition to your tropical garden; they are always a classic living flower gift. Hanging flower baskets are appreciated by all and right now the New Guinea impatiens are spectacular, as well as ivy geraniums, fuchsias and if you’re creative, you
Beauty Spot of the Month
can make a combination basket with viola, lobelia, alyssum and other adorable annuals. If you like potted plants, geraniums are just the thing for those with sunny, windy and/or salty conditions and the colors are bold, bright and beautiful. Bromeliads, with their sturdy colorful bloom and dramatic foliage are always a welcome addition to the home and garden. The miniatures are as sweet as can be and would make a lovely window sill plant. And, if you run out of ideas, don’t forget the always popular African violets, which also come in miniature and are so cute, you could almost eat them. I said almost... Show your love in a special way this month: kind words, kind deeds and a little flower. ◆ Garden gate Nursery is located in the Pompano Citi Centre. Cambodia and Return to Vietnam Story By Judy Sullivan
After a three-hour trip through the Cambodian countryside, we arrived at Siem Reap for what was to be three nights at a beautiful Sofitel Royal Angkor Hotel. A true resort, it had a huge pool, multiple restaurants and landscaped gardens, and we were met by costumed dancers and band. Our first night’s dinner featured a buffet of regional foods and a show with the traditional dancers of the royal ballet. The elaborate costumes and much of the dance resembled those of Thailand and India with the same stylized hand movements. Young girls can begin their training in the Aspara dance as young as six. It was originally only taught at the palace and was only for women dancers with the sole exception of the male role of the monkey! There are now many male dancers. Few of the original teachers and costume designers survived the Pol Pot regime.
Province of Siem Reap Cambodia’s thousand year-old temples have made this a major tourist destination. There are about 290 temples in a roughly 150-mile radius, but the city itself is charming with markets and upscale restaurants and a visual presence of the French influence in the architec-ture. There is a variety of cuisines scattered, mostly around the old market on Po Street. It has also been made famous by the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, as Angelina Jolie kick-boxed her way through Ta Prohm, the Angkorian temple overtaken by jungle roots. The main mode of transport from hotel to market is via the tuk-tuk, a rickshaw-type carriage pulled by a motorbike. You can find them anywhere and everywhere and travel almost any distance for about $3.00. We ventured into town for lunch at the famous Red Piano, allegedly favored by Angelina Jolie while filming her movie there. They have a cocktail named in her honor. Dr. Fish foot massage is a favorite tourist activity in town. For about $2.00, customers are seated on a bench and

place their bare feet into a clear tank filled with fish. The fish will nibble the dead skin from your feet. The fish vary in size, and we even discovered a place that advertised “No Pirahana!” Good to know! Siem Reap is also the only province in Cambodia that possesses the Mulberry Tree, necessary for the production of silk. A visit to the silk farm outside of town showed us the process from the growth of the worm on the tree, all the way through the dying and weaving processes. The dyes are, for the most part, natural even using rusty nails to produce the burnt oranges and browns. The labor force in the factory is predominantly women, and once the training period is completed, their wages are some of the highest in the country. The finished products are beautifully displayed in the shop where they are, of course, available for purchase. The first stop on any visit to the Angkor sites is at the main entrance where you will have a photo taken. This photo is then placed on a temple pass needed for admittance to any and all of the Angkor sites. You are offered either a three-day or a one-week pass. They range in price from $40.00 for the three-day pass to $90.00 for the full week.
Angkor Wat A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is considered the masterpieces of Khmer architecture. A feat of both engineering and artistry built in the 12th century, the mammoth stone construction is surrounded by a moat and walls. The stone was not quarried at the site, but brought from an area some 45 kilometers away. Thousands of elephants were used in construction. The temple is thought to have been originally built as a temple to the God Vishnu and, as such, is full of bas-relief carvings depicting scenes from Hindu epics. It is also the only temple facing west, and restored as a Buddhist shrine in the 16th century. When it was “discovered” in the 1860s, it was greeted with a media blitz, but it was actually a working monastery at the time. Many of the local
people sought refuge here during the Pol Pot regime. Any structure close to the jungles and left to its own devices will quickly be reclaimed by the jungle. Some of the temples in this region have been “reclaimed” from the jungle on more than one occasion. Most of them are in a constant state of repair. The construction consists of three levels. The upper, or third level, carries the five towers and is reached by way of a steep outside staircase. It is said to only rise only 11 meters, but the steep angle makes the climb memorable! It took all the courage I could muster to attempt the climb; (I did not come all this way to miss anything) fearing mostly the return down the stairs. There was a long continuous gallery with niches containing carvings or statues, an occasional monk and a spectacular view of the surrounding area.
Angkor Thom This was also built in the Khmer times during the 12th century, and contrary to Angkor Wat, was built as a city; one of the largest ever built. It too is surrounded by a moat and encloses a square. The approach across the moat is via a causeway lined with stone statues. Each of the two rows of figures carries the body of a giant serpent, the seven-headed naga. The central tower, called Bayon, is the most striking with huge stone faces of Buddha facing the four corners of the
compass. There are so many that it appears to be a stone forest of towers rising like mountain toward the center. Only 37 of the original 45 are still standing, some missing faces on the sides. It too contains beautiful bas-relief carvings, some in Hindu tradition, some Buddhist.
Ta Prohm This temple was built by the king to commemorate his mother. The trees here are slowly taking over the crumbling remains and are responsible for the atmosphere of the temple. The jungle has become part of the architecture, making inroads through fissures in the stone, maybe where birds have deposited seeds. Famous as the temple used in the filming of the Angelina Jolie film, Tomb Raiders, it is a perfect example of how the jungle will reclaim any structure left too long, unchecked. It is now being somewhat restored, however archeologists have determined that to remove many of the larger trees and roots would cause the walls to fall. It is thought to be a good example to visitors of the condition in which many of the temples were “discovered.”

Banteay Srei This city is located near the Kulen National Park, once a place of pilgrimage due to its significance. Historically, this is the site where King Jayavarman II proclaimed his divine kinship, marking the beginning of the Khmer Empire. Banteay Srei is distinguished by the beautiful pink sandstone color. It was off-limits to visitors for many years, due to Khmer bandits in the area. A small Hindu temple built during the 10th century, it was not built as a royal temple, and sometimes referred to as the Citadel of Women. It too has been dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. There are three main towers and most noticeable are the detailed bas-relief carvings and architectural details, such as the mitered corners on the doorways. It has been described as the “jewel of Khmer art and achieved notoriety when Andre Malraux, Minister of Culture under DeGaulle, began removing and selling some of the apsaras. The pieces were recovered and restoration began in 1931. Visits to the open-air markets and Les ChantiersEcoles, the vocational school training 650 apprentices per year in the traditional crafts, concluded our stay in Siem Reap.We were ready for an early evening flight to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Hanoi, Vietnam Here is the thousand year-old capital city of Vietnam. The original name was Thang Long, or the City of the Soaring Dragon and sits in the far north of the country in the Red River Delta. There are said to be over 300 new buildings in the city, but the Old Quarter is picturesque and a composite of French colonial architecture. Most of the narrow network of streets and alleys have retained the names of the trader’s guilds and are known as the “36 streets.” The merchandise is offered by “subject.” There is Shoe Street, Cloth Street, Rice and Silk Streets, etc.You will also find a KFC and upscale restaurants within the old city. It is along these streets that one will see the heart of the city and its people at their everyday ork.
Typical of the Vietnamese culture, most of the sanctuaries are built around local legends. On a tiny island in the Hoan Kiem Lake (The Lake of the Restored Sword) in the center of the city, stands the Tortoise pagoda. The legend dates back to the 15th century states that when the Chinese occupied the country, a turtle living in the lake gave a local fisherman a sword used to destroy the invaders. The fisherman was made emperor and returned the sword to the turtle. To this day, the turtles within the lake are revered. Ngoc Son,Temple of the Jade Mountain sits near the north shore. The entire lake is surrounded by a lovely walkway and park-like setting making a perfect 1.5 mile walk on a good day. Traveling around the lake you will find restaurants, banks and shops, many of famous designers such as Gucci and Prada. We also spotted a Playboy store! The grand old hotel of Hanoi, The Metropole, was built by the French in 1901 and still reigns as the most famous hotel in Hanoi. She was recently in the news when an underground bunker was discovered during some garden renovations. These were used as a place of protection for many of the famous visitors to Hanoi during the Christmas Bombings of Hanoi in the Vietnam conflict. It is a favorite location for brides to be photographed, and we saw a steady parade of couples during our three-night stay. It is within a block of the magnificent Opera House (another favorite bridal photo stop). The Temple of Literature is a series of walled courtyards and gates, built in the 10th century and was Vietnam’s first University, a center of Confucian philosophy. The structure is dedicated to the scholars of the city who, when they have successfully completed their exams return to have their names engraved on tablets in the courtyard and Continues on page 42

Investors Can Learn Much From Super Bowl Teams It’s Super Bowl time again. And whether you’re a sports fan or not, you can probably learn something from the Super Bowl teams that you can apply to non-sports endeavors — such as investing. For example, Super Bowl teams always have good players at many positions, and these players play well together. As an investor, you need a variety of investments with different capabilities that work well together. Super Bowl teams also are skilled at creating effective game plans. When you invest, you, too, need a game plan in the form of a longterm strategy. Finally, Super Bowl teams have good coaches. As an investor, you can benefit from “coaches” such as your financial advisor and tax and legal advisors. It’s fun to watch the Super Bowl teams compete. But you can also learn a lot from them.

Sadie was the consummate sailor and could often be found on the sandbar at Islamorada or Lake Boca, snacking on her favorites—watermelon and black and white cookies! We are heartbroken at our loss and will always treasure the memories of our times together. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Debra Todd for capturing the true spirit of Sadie as we know her— loving and gorgeous! And a very special thank you to Dr. Rudd Nelson and his entire staff at Bayview Animal Hospital for their kindness
and compassion in helping give us and our girl comfort during her final days and moments. They not only earned our respect, but our loyalty. Penni Morris, Pac N' Send of Lighthouse Point

A snake, fish, giraffe, cat, and other more fabulous creatures may appear in your drawings. What do they represent?
Glasser:
Ficus trees traditionally were like outdoor town halls, nature’s gathering places, so I was not surprised to discover animals living inside the roots. Besides, dangling roots readily suggest snakes and what better place for a bird to nest? I did wonder, nonetheless, how a giraffe from an African wooded savannah made its way to Florida.
Q:
Why do nude figures appear so prominently in your drawings?
Glasser:
Would you really expect people to be wearing dresses and suits in the Garden, man’s original state? It seemed to me they’d be as naked as rabbits, birds, snakes, and the rest of nature. I have always been drawn to the human figure. One summer years ago, in a castle on top of a small mountain in the heart of old Salzburg, Austria, every 15 minutes a nude model would shift position for me and the other art students attending Oskar Kokoschka’s “School of Vision” to capture her anew. With ficus trees, aerial roots that later become tree limbs actually resemble human limbs, torsos with long legs reaching to take hold of earth.
Q:
Several of the drawings seem to evoke holocaust images. Was this a conscious decision?
Glasser: No, but viewers have had that association,
particularly with the two black, gray and white drawings that depict lines of seated or standing nude figures, their faces grimacing or downcast. As a Jew, however, holocaust imagery is imprinted on my heart and my brain, frequently popping up unannounced.

Q:
How did you arrange your last exhibit at the Goddess Store & Studio in Hollywood?
Glasser:
Anastasia Clark, Broward County Poet-inResidence since 2009, was instrumental. An award-winning poet, she is a cultural treasure, promoting poetry readings and workshops in South Florida. Supportive of both my poetry and art, this past fall she suggested I show The Root People at The Goddess Store & Studio. Carmen Garson, owner, hosts a Poetry and Open Word Circle and promotes the work of a different artist each month during Hollywood Art Walk. I am indebted to her for the opportunity to share my work.
Q:
Does the cultural climate in South Florida meet with your satisfaction?
Glasser: The best thing to happen to me since I moved
to Florida was finding a community of writers in the Fort Lauderdale Writers’ Group. Jon Frangipane and Wendell Abern head the eclectic gathering at our bi-monthly workshops. Having a supportive audience to critique new work is more than a gift, it’s a necessity.
Q:
Why have you selected Lighthouse Point as your permanent home?
Glasser:
Unlike the stereotypical Jew who, after retirement, falls south to Florida to play golf and soak in the sun, I was lured here by grandchildren. When my daughter Hara gave birth to a third, I started packing up. The moment she and my son-in-law Steve found their dream home on Lighthouse Point Drive, I began looking at real estate, nearby. I moved here in May and couldn’t be more pleased. My needs typically are met within walking distance of my condo—grocery store, an excellent library, yoga classes. The residents take pride in maintaining their properties; it is a safe and scenic place to explore on foot.
Q:
Is there another new exciting project in the near future?
Glasser: Creative people are at the mercy of the muse. I never know what image, dredged from experience, memory or dreams, will ignite a poem or inspire a drawing. Recently, I woke at 4:00 am when lines about my deceased younger daughter began typing themselves in my brain. I raced to the computer. I have enough new work to begin shaping a manuscript for another substantial poetry collection. My prize-winning chapbook,“The Long Life,” is due out from Poetica Publishing Company in a few weeks. I’m hoping to find a national and local audience for these poems. ◆

Cambodia and Return to Vietnam Part 3 Continued from page 32
become candidates for imperial civil service. They date back for centuries, some of them almost smooth due to the weathering. There is a pavilion in the center containing a bronze tortoise worn shiny in places as it is rubbed for luck! The gardens are full of topiaries and colorful floral displays. The Ho Chi Minh Memorial complex includes the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, museum and the simple stilt house where he spent his final days. The mausoleum was opened in 1975 during the reunification period. Ho Chi Minh lies in a glassenclosed coffin in the air-conditioned hall, contrary to his wishes to be cremated! The body is sent each year to Moscow for “cosmetic restoration.” The huge concrete structure is guarded at the top of the steps by soldiers, and the entire complex is surrounded by a park. Also nearby is the Presidential Palace that was the residence of the former French Governor General of Indochina. Ho hated the building and the simple wooden structure nearby was built for and presented to him as a birthday gift. You can visit his office and bedroom quarters on the second level. A short walk away is the One Pillar Pagoda, a Lotus shaped pagoda emerging from the middle of a Lotus pond. This 11th century monument was originally made of wood and survived for centuries, until it was destroyed by the French when they abandoned the city in 1954. It has been replaced by a concrete pillar. A visit to the notorious “Hanoi Hilton,” where American POWs were held captive, gave us insight into that portion of history. Only one-third of the prison remains as a museum, while the rest of the property has been removed and replaced

by an office building and condominium. The prison was originally built by the French in the center of the town to hopefully serve as a deterrent to crime. Again, much of the documentary has a distinct Vietnamese slant, including photos of prisoners (they refer to them as detainees!) enjoying volleyball, a lavish Christmas dinner, and opening gifts from family. John McCain was “rescued” by locals from his downed plane in the West Lake outside of town and interred here for many years. There are photos of him receiving medical care for his injuries. The Vietnam Ethnology Museum gives glimpses of the daily life of the 54 ethnic groups residing in the country. Outside are traditional houses, each with its specific furnishings and surrounded by typical vegetation. We were unprepared for the extremely graphic sexual depictions of the sculptures surrounding the homes—leaving nothing to the imagination (Bill took plenty of photos, but this is a family magazine). After dinner at a local restaurant, we were transported to the new, but small Hanoi airport where we did all that last minute “airport shopping” we needed to finish before our return to the US. Passing through the security line required the usual passport check, as well as a digital fingerprint scan. Although on this trip we did miss some of the cities whose names are familiar to us from the Vietnam War era, we saw a wonderful cross-section of a country ravaged by war, famine, and poverty, yet vibrant and full of life. The restorations and new modern hotels built since the 60s have made both Vietnam and Cambodia prominent tourist destinations; each for its own reason. It was a beautiful and memorable trip. ◆

Lito’s Turf & Surf A Bright New Star In Lighthouse Point Article by Valerie Amor Located in the Beacon Light Shopping Center, this little treasure might miss your notice. Don’t be fooled by its modest exterior. Inside there is good food and cheer by one of the friendliest and most community-minded families in Lighthouse Point. The owners, Don and Joan Hoy, run their restaurant with their chef sons, Kyle and Stephen. A third son is in Boston busy attending college and aspiring to be a professional hockey player. With Don and his sons running the kitchen, Joan is responsible for making sure that everything Kyle, Joan and Don Hoy, owners. runs smoothly and makes what should be known as the best key lime pie around. Don has a solid history in the food industry working at Dan Dowd’s Steakhouse, Yesterday’s, Manero’s Steakhouse and Bodega Steakhouse. Don and Joan, as previous owners of the Landlubber’s Raw Bar and Grill in Plantation for twenty years, decided to downscale to a more intimate setting, enjoying the charm and ease of Lighthouse Point residents. The inspiration for the popular signature Lighthouse Point marinade of teriyaki, pineapple and ginger used for some of their shrimp, rib eye, chicken and burger dishes came from locals who stopped in to visit while they were busy getting the restaurant ready to open. As they like to say, “We will cater to all of your needs.” Clearly this began in earnest even before they opened the doors on October 3, 2011. If you happen to be a successful fisherman, they will happily cook any filleted and cleaned fish that you bring to the restaurant. Cooked anyway you like at $9.95, it includes side dishes, so you can literally have your fish and eat it too! They are lucky to still have a staff on board that have Peel ‘n Eat Shrimp
46
Photos by Jon Frangipane been with them since they first opened their first restaurant in Plantation, over twenty years ago. The workers are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about a rather extensive menu. Starting with a mound of boiled in pickling Soft spices Peel ‘n Eat Pretzel Shrimp ($5.95), Sticks accompanied by homemade cocktail sauce piqued with horseradish, the warm Soft Pretzel Sticks ($4.99) served with both spicy ground and honey mustard complemented nicely the raw oysters on the half shell from Galveston Bay (half dozen for $7.99). Followed by a cup of the Lobster Crab Bisque ($4.99), it was Galveston Bay oysters described as,“the best bisque you on the half shell will ever have” by Jeff Coleman an ardent follower of Don and his restaurant. Both Jeff, from Sunrise and Hank Kutos from Coral Springs, make a point of traveling across town to eat at Lito’s because, well the “food is superb!” After a couple spoonfuls of crab laden chunks of tomato creamy bisque goodness, it was easy to agree. Don makes a point of flying in fish three times a week and to ensure freshness he cuts his own fillets. Sourcing local fish as well, mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna and yellow tail snapper are regularly featured on the menu. Perhaps one of the few restaurants to offer Ipswich clams (two dozen for $19.95), either steamed or fried, they are flown in every Wednesday night Ipswich clams from Maine and offered until they run out, which is usually pretty quick. Sweet and briny, they are served the authentic way with real drawn butter. Joan’s recommendation is to get in early as this special typically,“lasts until it lasts.” Crispy, medium spicy buffalo chicken wings, paired with a half rack of ribs ($15.99), were perfectly smothered in a rich, slightly sweet barbeque sauce. The meat literally fell off the

bones. Sauce for the wings, which can be ordered from mild to x-hot includes lemon pepper, barbeque honey, garlic, teriyaki, jerked, garlic parmesan or raspberry! Rib choices include dry rub, Sweet Carolina or spicy barbeque. Look for 59-cent Half Rack of wings Monday thru Saturday from 3Ribs and 6 pm, and all day Sundays until 5 pm. Wings Lito’s famous 10 oz. Bacon Cheddar Burger ($8.99) was nicely thick with smoky strips of bacon served on your choice of Kaiser roll,Texas toast and more. Served with curly 10 oz. Bacon fries, be Cheddar adventurous and try Burger the sweet potato fries, potato salad, or coleslaw. Avoiding the usually oversweet base of most coleslaws or potato salads you might find in other restaurants, Lito’s makes both with a nicely slightl vinegary base of mayonnaise and red wine vinegar that complements rather than smothers the natural taste of the ingredients. The use of red potatoes for the potato salad and celery seed in the coleslaw is a nice touch. The star of the dishes has to be their most popular item, the Tsunami. At a reasonable $12.95, it is clear why diners return again Tsunami Ahi Tuna and again craving for more. Nicely-plated on an asymmetrical shaped black platter, seaweed salad is surrounded by calamari that has been marinated in lime and ginger. Served with a plum sauce and a cucumber wasabi dipping sauce, the thin slices of black and white sesame- seedseared tuna were artistically layered around the edges of the plate. Kudos to the chefs in the kitchen! This is a wonderfully delightful dish, presenting a complex blend of flavors, as well as being a visual and textural sensation. The cucumber wasabi is a bit of culinary inspiration bringing the dish from excellent to hovering just a bit above sublime. This is a must try! Running nightly specials, such as ‘Dolphin in the Weeds,’ featuring dolphin served over sautéed spinach in a garlic butter sauce, has become very popular. “We are a catering company,” says Joan. “We want to be sure that the Hoy family
Richard Applegate and Mayor Lamar Fisher enjoy lunch at Lito’s Turf & Surf. conveys a relaxed, casual atmosphere, one that each and every restaurant customer dining in their restaurant can experience.” With a wide assortment of wines, imported, domestic and draft beers to choose from, a local Key West Sunset Ale; a standout is their extensive list of microbrews available produced both locally and imported nationwide. With a rotation of offerings, it includes Inlet Monk in the Trunk ($4.25) from Jupiter, described as “an organic, Belgian style amber,” sounded particularly interesting; a must try on the next visit. Happy hour runs Monday thru Thursday all day and night, Friday and Saturday from 3-6 p.m. and Sundays until 5 p.m. Domestic beer is $2 and import beers $3. Joan’s outstanding, not to be missed key lime pie, has a light delicate key lime flavor. Topped with real whipped cream, the walnut and brown sugar crust makes it an especially delightful mix of creamy and crunchy. A New York styled cheesecake with raspberry sauce was firm and light. The chocolate layer cake was definitely created with chocolate lovers in mind. Rich with layers of chocolate filling, a fudgy topping, whipped cream and mini chocolate pieces, it melted in the mouth. What a great way to end a meal! The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Monday – Thursday is 11 a.m.-10 p.m, Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. On Sunday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Delivery, takeout and catering are also available.

Pre-Party Jitters About What to Wear? By Millie Walsh You received a party invitation and the hostess was kind enough to note the attire, so how should you dress? From Casual to White Tie, there is actually a guideline to follow. Casual — Be comfortable, dress like you were going to the movies or out to dinner. Jeans and shorts are just fine for casual attire. Now guys remember, the invite said casual, not sloppy. Leave the stains and rips at home, unless of course they are designer rips! Dressy Casual — Hold off on the jeans unless they are “dressy” jeans. Guys should wear a collared shirt or polo and khakis or trousers. Ladies can choose from a dress, skirt, dress slacks or dressy jeans and a nice top. Business Casual — Step it up a notch and add a sport coat or blazer for the guys and ladies don’t wear anything too revealing— business casual is a time to be more conservative. Cocktail Attire — Elegant short dress (mid-thigh to mid-calf), or dressy pants and top for her and a dark suit, dress shirt and tie for him. Black Tie — This calls for a tux for him and an evening gown or dressy cocktail dress for her. Think “classic” and “elegant” and you’ll know what to pick.
Black Tie Optional — The option here is really for the guy—Shall I wear a tux or a conservative dark suit? The Ladies dress is still an evening gown or dressy cocktail dress at a black tie optional affair. Creative Black Tie — Have some fun and show your personality with this black tie option. Guys you still have to wear a tux, but add a bit of your personality with a patterned vest, or maybe a black shirt with no tie. Ladies it’s all about accessories—let your personality show through in your shoes, bag and jewelry. White Tie—This is the most formal of evening attire. Black tailcoat with matching satin striped trousers, winged collar white tux shirt, white vest, white bow tie and white or gray gloves for the gents. The only choice for the ladies is an elegant evening gown. So there’s your guidelines. Get dressed for the party with this knowledge and remember, everyone will interpret the required dress with their own unique twist. Feel confident in your choice and have fun! ◆ I’ll be answering your questions and sharing fashion news and tips each month in the Lighthouse Point Magazine’s Fashion Blog, a print version of my Web Log. Exercise vs. Eating after 35 Who took my body? By Kelly Doyle, dfp Pilates Health Studios Which client has the upper hand when it comes to weight loss? Clients dedicated to their workout regimens but not to what they put into their mouths, or clients that are sporadic with their workouts but very dedicated to a healthy diet. As you age, your metabolism tends to decelerate by about 5% for every decade past age 40. If your resting metabolic rate is 1,200 calories per day at age 40, it will be around 1,140 at age 50. According to Madelyn Fernstrom, PhD, director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Weight Management Center; ‘At age 40 to maintain your weight, you’re going to have to eat 100 calories less a day, and that has nothing to do with anything other than the natural course of aging’. When you workout using resistance training such as Pilates or free weights you gain muscle. Muscle burns calories, but more importantly muscle burns calories while you are at rest. The more muscle you have the more calories you burn. When you cardio train you typically burn a good amount of calories, and if you work to a certain potential you begin to burn energy from stored fat. The phrase ‘we are what we eat’ is actually quite true. If you’re putting your effort into making exercise a regular part of your life’s routine,
52
Lighthouse Point Magazine • www.lhpmag.com
but go home and not eat, over-eat or eat unhealthy foods then you are undermining your exercise efforts. I think the question we all must ask ourselves is why are we taking time out of our day to exercise and make healthy choices when eating? I find that when clients reach a certain age, usually 35-45 years old, they see changes in their bodies that weren’t an issue before. They realize that they don’t want to be thin, they want to feel and look healthy. Here’s the true ‘skinny.’ As we age we need to tweek our diet and exercise regimen. The people I see succeed are the ones that realize that a healthy body is what they want and that can only happen when you have a healthy lifestyle—combining exercise and smart eating. My rule is: Exercise for the type of body you want, and give your body the foods it needs to get there. There are very simple tools to get started, and feeling and looking your best is possible. I see it happen every day. For 2012 change your focus when it comes to yourself. Don’t think about being thin or slimming down. Focus on being healthy and the rest will fall into place, naturally. ◆ For more information: Kelly Doyle, dfp Pilates Health Studio, 33000 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, 954-648-5831.

It’s the Law! Motorcycle Safety—What you need to know By Catherine (Kate) Iaconis Favitta Effective July 1, 2008, all motorcyclists must complete a motorcycle safety course and pass a motorcycle knowledge and skills test in order to obtain a motorcycle endorsement for the driver’s license. Effective October 1, 2008, an operator of a motorcycle or moped must maintain both wheels on the ground at all times and the license tag must be affixed horizontally. Penalties for non–compliance can result in ticketing, fines or impounding of the motorcycle. In addition, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles launched a motorcycle safety campaign that recommended the following for optimum safety: 1. Wear appropriate gear (protection for head, eyes, feet and ankles—Google “timberwoof motorcycle safety gear FAQ for details) 2. Wear bright upper clothing and reflective material or vest to increase visibility. Avoid black, gray, beige and other neutral clothing 3. Inspect your motorcycle before each ride 4. Plan a route in advance, especially when riding in a group 5. Obey all traffic laws, especially speed, signals and stop signs 54

For those who share the road with motorcycles, here’s what the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles advises: 1. Always allow a motorcycle the full lane width, never share a lane 2. Check for motorcycles in mirrors and blind spots before entering an intersection or changing lanes 3. Do not tailgate.Allow more following distance when behind a motorcycle than for other vehicles. 4. Be aware that minor road annoyances may be serious road hazards to a motorcycle Former director of Florida Highway Patrol, Retired Colonel John Czernis, said during the motorcycle safety campaign: “Messages such as these truly help save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.” Let’s work together to reduce tragic statistics in 2012! ◆ Kate is a Supreme Court Certified Marital & Family Law Mediator who recently retired from her law practice. A Way to Save “Lost Humor” By Wendell Abern
Dear Humor Buffs, About a year ago, I wrote a column entitled, “Humor, It Shouldn’t Get Lost,” lamenting the disappearance of Jewish humor. The column pointed out that many of the old Jewish comics had died, along with their particular brand of comedy— which featured a heavy old-country accent and strange sentence structures. “Hebonics,” as Howard Schollman, linguistics professor at New York University termed the unusual sentence constructions used by immigrants, continues to wilt because Jewish immigration has trickled to almost nothing. Further, assimilation has limited those endearing old accents to a diminishing number of comedians. Interestingly, I received several e-mails from readers who shared my feelings of loss. Now I am proposing a resurrection of this waning humor that fits right in with today’s digital age: recorded messages with Jewish accents! We all spend inordinate amounts of time on hold, listening to recorded voices, or hearing a message delivered by one of today’s whizbang electronic products. Why not hire a few of those comedians to give us a few chuckles while we wait? And so, with an assist from many Jewish writers and comedians, I offer the following. 1 – Recording for a credit card company. “ABC Credit Card, please tap out your ten-digit card number, using the numbers on your phone. (PAUSE) Okay, you vanta know your balance? Please hold. (PAUSE) Oy vay, you don’t vanta hear that.Vait a tsecond, I’ll get you a macher, could help you.” 2 – Recording for a middle-aged woman. “You called to ask about my heartburn, maybe? My sciatica? Or my root canal from yesterday, cost me you vouldn’t believe. Vait’ll you hear vot else is happening to my body. Leave a number and don’t visper, I can’t find my hearing aid.” 3 – Option for a middle-aged woman. “Whoever is calling, I have new pictures of my grandchildren, you vouldn’t believe how gorgeous. If dis is my sister, I vanta hear all about our cousin Sarah and vot married guy dat tramp is mixed up vit now. If dis is my son, calling from colletch for the first time since Yom Kippur, vich vas two months ago, I vill tell you vun more time. Stop playing sports. Be a sports doctor.” 4 – Opinionated option for any Jewish woman. “If dis is dat anti-abortionist group calling vunce again to kvetch, I vill tell you vunce and for all—life begins for my children ven dey graduate medical school.” 5 – Recording for mother with a popular teen-age daughter. “If dis happens to be the hoo-hah vunder boy I keep hearing about, takes my daughter to a deli and puts mayonnaise on a pastrami sandvich, ven you come pick her up dis veekend, I vanta meet you, and I vanta see a copy of your grade point average, your family tree and a recent urine test.
56

And leave a number for a phone, a real one, not one of those cellthings.” 6 – Recording for any mother who has offspring at college. “If this happens to be my son or daughter calling from colletch, it’s been a long time, you didn’t vonder if I’m dead yet? Anyvun else, at least you know I’m alive, please leave a number.” 7 – Recording for an older man living alone. “If dis is my ex-vife, not a penny more. If dis is my second ex-vife, not a penny more. If dis is my t’oid ex-vife, not a penny more. If dis is dat cockamamie collection soivice again, maybe you finally get the picture. Othervise, leave a number.” 8 – Recording on an automobile GPS System. “The airport? From your house? Okay, foist you back out of your garage, vich you haven’t cleaned since Eisenhower left Omaha, and head south ‘til you get to Hermie and Sylvia Goldberg’s house and make a right turn. But before I sign off, I must give credit to my daughter, who was kind of an inspiration for this column. My daughter has been leaving funny messages on her answering machine for many years. Her best was about twenty years ago, when her answering machine said, “Hi. This is Amy. I can’t come to the phone right now because I’m ovulating.” Frankly, I’ve never been able to top that. Do People Really Read Those Things? E-mail Marketing By Jennifer Kovacs
The other day I was at a networking event and someone asked the group if they read her company newsletter. Quickly another attendant replied,“I never read those things, no one ever does.” Well, I beg to differ. Yes we get inundated with spam emails and monthly promotions from every company that has ever picked up our business card but think about the one time you do read something you find interesting. The moment an article, publication or author catches your attention your likely to look through the next periodical you receive from them, much like the magazine you’re reading right now. I know email blasts are a bit of a different animal because they are pushed through to our private email account that gets bombarded with a million correspondents and junk from hundreds of vendors that leave us wondering,“How did they even get my email?” I think sometimes we feel it’s an invasion of privacy, other times we’re just frustrated we got put on another email list, and mostly our fingers are tired of hitting the delete button. The ironic part of it all, we usually are the ones hitting ‘subscribe’ for these lists without even considering the repercussions. We might actually have to read these things, and if we do, what if we like what they have to say? I can tell you that these subscriptions are highly addictive if they are kept short, sweet and chock full of important information. Don’t send an E-Blast out just to send it. This type of marketing should be
done at the least on a quarterly basis, at the most a monthly basis. Highlight the key points and don’t add more content than needed. Give your audience enough to open the next month’s addition. Is it likely you’ll have some unsubscribed notifications, absolutely? Will most people dismiss it because they don’t have the time to read it, possibly? However, if you commit to creating a compelling marketing piece that offers insight and tips for those people seeking them at the right time, and it’s plastered on their computer screen; well you just may have found yourself a dedicated reader. Always put your contact information, a link to your website and a timeline on when they should receive the next. Be strategic in your titling the letter and monitor your reports. Any third party service like iContact or Constant Contact offers such analytics. Graphics are never a bad idea, since most people would prefer to look at a picture then read a paragraph. Try to keep things exciting. Steer clear of industry jargon and don’t be afraid to talk to your audience as if they know nothing. People don’t want to feel stupid, and it something seems overcomplicated you can be pretty sure it will result in being uninteresting. There’s a fine balance. Regardless, these things have a 30% of being effective and a 70% of being deleted, but out of that small percentage can come a qualified client. ◆ For more information please contact Opt2Web, www.opt2web.com Web Design and Development
Sheriff Al Lamberti Reports
BSO Gun Squad – Preventing Violence in our Community By Sheriff Al Lamberti
When it comes to gun violence, when do we say, “Enough is enough”? When a person changing their tire is hit by a stray bullet? Or when a teenager is shot and killed walking home from school? How about when a decorated law enforcement officer is viciously gunned down in a drugstore parking lot? The time has come to say,“Enough is enough”! People often see me only as the Sheriff of Broward County; many forget that I am first a father and husband. As such, it is my job to protect my family, and as your sheriff, it is my goal to ensure the very same safety for the citizens of this community. As a member of law enforcement for more than 30 years, I take illegal ownership of guns and gun violence very seriously and it is my goal to curb this problem. In an effort to make this goal a reality, in 2009 I assigned six detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office to form a Gun Squad. The squad focused on tackling a very serious problem in Broward County—gun violence. The purpose of the Gun Squad is extremely important: stop illegal ownership of guns, seize dangerous weapons and secure our streets. While the task may have seemed impossible to some, public safety is the number one priority of government and I was determined to combat and raise awareness to this important initiative. This initiative was enacted with the sole purpose of targeting people who have obtained illegal firearms and the traffickers who supply them. These are the people who give responsible gun owners a bad name and the criminals who are making some of our neighborhoods dangerous places to live. With two years under their belts, the BSO Gun Squad is learning more and more everyday. Working with other units within our agency and other law enforcement jurisdictions, these detectives have been successful in

connecting weapons to various unsolved crimes. With more than 200 arrests and the seizure of 252 guns thus far, the Gun Squad is proving that we are making a difference and we can transform some of the hardest hit neighborhoods in Broward County. That’s 252 guns that will not be used in a crime and more than 200 people who cannot commit a violent act against our children or our community. Often there are family members or friends who know of someone illegally possessing a firearm, but they don’t know what to do about it. We want you to know that you can report it to us – anytime—day or night. Our Gun Stoppers program is administered by Broward County Crime Stoppers and the tip line number is 954.493.TIPS (8477). The more illegally-owned guns we get off the streets, the safer we will all be. Again, if you know of someone who is in possession of firearms illegally, call the tip line. Similar to what our law enforcement counterparts in Miami-Dade have done, I want to expand the Gun Squad. I firmly believe that by increasing the number of law enforcement personnel who are specifically looking for illegally-owned firearms, we can transform the most violent communities in South Florida. With changing technology, a more aggressive approach and a national database to track weapons used in the commission of a crime, gun violence and illegal gun ownership is a problem that can be controlled. Remember, Broward County is your home as well as mine, and we all need to do our part in protecting it. I encourage each resident to be alert and observant.Always report a crime or information about illegally-owned guns by calling Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954.493.TIPS (8477). As another new year begins, let’s work together as a community to make Broward County a shining example of a peaceful community to the rest of the nation. Stay safe! ◆

AS K D R. CO R N By Dr. Andrea Corn
Dear Dr. Corn, I remained a bachelor until my 40s when I fell in love and married. Two years later, I’ve started thinking I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life. At first, I thought our differences were stimulating. Now we can’t seem to get along. I’m wondering how could I have been so short-sighted? I’m wondering, should I accept the fact it’s time to bail from my miserable marriage? Dear Stuck, I hear uncertainty and resignation in your words, but it may not be as hopeless as you imagine. It is not unusual to be attracted to someone vastly different in terms of personality, interests, and/or behavior. Such interactions can be quite broadening. It’s also possible one or both of you may have tried from the start to please one another at the expense of avoiding or dismissing unpleasant feelings. This kind of interacting can only last so long before something occurs (for ex., a provocative comment or a misunderstanding) that unleashes a warehouse of buried emotions. Sometimes continual arguing signifies an underlying unresolved issue that perpetuates disharmony and distance. And, depending upon what words are spoken or what voice tones are heard, the other may feel under attack.
Try to determine if the two of you share enough of the same core values (i.e., trustworthy, loyal, caring). Of course, there will be the daily issues that can be exceedingly frustrating due to opposing perspectives (i.e., one of you may squeeze the toothpaste from the bottom while the other one squeezes it from the top). Even so, such conflicts while frustrating can be more easily resolved rather than if there are fundamental differences. Marital therapy may be the solution to help you figure out how to repair your communication difficulties plus rekindle your initial attraction. It’s not about trying to remold the other (i.e., remember Henry Higgins, in the musical, My Fair Lady?) Marital therapy can enable you to realize there are different patterns of communication; often stemming from one’s own family of origin. By learning how to be more understanding, accepting, and respectful of each other’s differences, you will learn healthier ways of handing disagreements without feeling compelled to give up. ◆ Dr. Andrea Corn is in private practice in Lighthouse Point, FL. Prom Tanning: Blamed For Increase In Melanoma In Women By Melanie S. Hecker, MD, MBA
What Happened in the 1990s? It has been found that teenage girls who used tanning beds in the 1990s are at increased risk of Malignant Melanoma (MM), the deadliest form of skin cancer. This rise in MM in women 25-34 years old dates back to the prom-driven surge in tanning bed use when these women were in high school. In a recent article, a prominent Dermatologist in New York City stated that ‘in all the Melanoma I see in women in their 20s and 30s, virtually every one of them has gone to a tanning salon’. He also points out that the Melanoma rate in this age group is seriously on the rise. Also of note is the location of many of these Melanomas in these women. Many of these lesions arise in areas where the sun doesn’t shine, but the tanning bed does! According to the National Cancer Institute, recent increases in the Melanoma rate among young, white females has been ‘especially rapid’. Since 1995, the annual incidence of Melanoma among young, white, U.S. women rose by an average of 3.8% compared to the preceding year. This is an alarming rate.
Are Tanning Beds the Culprit? The increased MM incidence since the 1990s links with the popularity of tanning bed use among teens that first reached high

levels in the 1990s. The first commercial U.S. tanning salon opened in 1978, and today there are about 60,000, with about 1,000,000 Americans using a tanning bed daily and about 28,000,000 using a tanning bed at least once a year. Women patronize tanning salons about seven times more often than men. And major marketing of tanning beds is done right before prom time. So the Melanoma spike in females 25 years and older correlates well with their tanning bed usage. Twenty years ago, for most Dermatologists, it was rare to see a female patient in her 20s with Melanoma, and MM was not even common in women in their 30s. But now the rate of MM in the same age group has risen exponentially and the only thing that they appear to be doing differently than their male counterparts is their increased tanning bed usage. ◆ To find out more about MRSA infection, please contact us at Hecker Dermatology Group, P.A. Spaghetti Squash Pomodoro with Hot Italian Turkey Sausage Serves 4
Ingredients: • 4 Hot Italian Turkey Sausages (more if each individual wants more than one) • 1 Whole spaghetti squash • 2 Garlic cloves, peeled and minced • 1 Small onion, finely chopped • 2 Tsp olive oil • 1 Can (28 oz) San Marzano whole peeled plum tomatoes • 1/2 Cup dry red wine • 3 Tbsp tomato paste • 1 Tsp white wine vinegar • 1 Tsp dried oregano • 1 Tsp dried basil • 1 Tsp crushed red pepper flakes Preparation: Preheat oven to 375°. Halve squash lengthwise and scoop out seeds. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. Lay halves flesh side down and bake for 35 minutes, or until you can easily pierce the shell. Saute olive oil, garlic and onion until onion is transparent. Add remaining ingredients (all except sausage) and let simmer for 30 minutes. Coat separate pan with olive oil and cook sausage on low-med until browned on the outside and cooked thoroughly. Transfer the sausages into the pomodoro sauce to simmer. When squash is ready, scrape crosswise with a fork (it will shred and look like spaghetti) and pour sauce and a sausage on top of the squash.
Fontina and Artichoke Stuffed Chicken Serves 4
Ingredients: • 1 12-ounce can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped • 1 cup grated fontina cheese • 1/2 cup packed sundried tomatoes • 3/4 cup packed baby spinach • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 2 tbsp olive oil • 3/4 cup dry white wine • salt • pepper Preparation: Preheat oven to 375°. Mix cheese, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, and spinach in a medium bowl. Cut each chicken breast horizontally into the side to make a pocket. Stuff each pocket with the mixture, and press to seal. Sprinkle the top of the chicken breasts with olive oil, wine, salt and pepper. Bake until cooked thoroughly, about 45 minutes. This is a great recipe to get creative with. Ie: try stuffing chicken with new ingredients (how does crumbled turkey bacon, low-fat cheddar and barbeque sauce sound?)
Lighthouse Point resident, Courtney Stephens, shares some of her favorite recipes.
Stacey’s Fancy Bruschetta This recipe comes from my sister-in-law Stacey. It is a tad tedious, but well worth it. The flavor of the roasted peppers is delicious.
Ingredients: • 2 red bell peppers, seeded and halved • 2 green peppers, seeded and halved • 4 tomatoes, seeded and diced • 1/2 red onion, chopped • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 1/2 tsp chopped fresh basil • 1 1/2 tsp chopped fresh parsley • 2 garlic cloves, minced • dash of salt and pepper • 1 baguette Preparation: Place halved peppers on a cookie sheet, skin side up, and broil for 20 minutes. After broiling, place peppers in a ziploc bag for 10 minutes to steam. Peel skin off peppers and chop peppers. Add chopped tomatoes, onion, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, basil, parsley, garlic and salt and pepper. Let marinate. When ready to serve, slice baguette into 1/2 inch thick slices and toast on both sides until crispy. Spoon tomato mixture onto each baguette slice and serve.
Apple Dessert Dip I’m not much of a baker, so this is a great dessert to make. I made this for a girls’ night celebration and it was an absolute hit.
Ingredients: • 1 - 2 Granny smith apples, sliced • 1 Block of cream cheese (I use lowfat) • 1 Jar of caramel sauce (I used sugar free) • 1 Heath or Skor bar, crushed Preparation: On a plate, spread the cream cheese. Pour the caramel on top. Sprinkle the skor/heath bar on top. Arrange apple slices around the plate and dip!

Two poems by Aaron Turco
Ruminations After Running Over a Squirrel It stood in my way Brown-eyed and Bushy-tailed, But it was too late To slam the brakes “What was that, daddy? Asked my daughter from the Security of her child safety seat. “Nothing baby,” I lied, “Everything‘s fine.” But it was only a tiny lie About a tiny accident That left a tiny mess No need to call the cops The insurance agent, Or the sanitation department Car wheels will flatten The little victim. The afternoon sun Will dry it hard and black. And after dark A coyote or a raccoon Will peel off what’s left of it And have a hunk of Road kill jerky For a midnight snack. Case closed, or so I thought Until the nine a.m. project meeting, When tiny brown-eyed and Bushy tailed thoughts Started clawing their way Into my brain, just when it ought Be filling up to the brim With big, brilliant, and original Career building ideas: Does a squirrel suffer cold? Does it love its children? Does it worry when it cannot find Enough nuts and acorns To put away for the winter?
Wisdom of the Aged Getting old is not fun My sight grows dim My back and knees Betray me My stomach And intestines Rebel against Everything I like to eat Memories of familiar Faces and names Are sucked into The black holes Of ‘senior moments’ And they expect me To be wise, Just because I lived so long Oh, where Can I find Wisdom, that is Aged and refreshing Like old wine, And flows like the Fountain of Youth? Was I supposed To look for Bits of wisdom And preserve them For when I get old, Like one who collects Mushrooms in the fall And dries them In the sun For the winter?

Malware Valentine’s Day Greetings —out to steal your ID, not your heart! By Denise Richardson
They show up in your e-mail inbox, messages with a subject line that reads,“You have received a Valentine’s card” or “Your sweetheart has sent you a Valentine’s Day greeting.” Some may even indicate that, “The flowers you ordered for your sweetie won’t be delivered unless you log in and reenter your credit card information.” But look out, Cupid. With February 14th fast approaching, you need to be on the alert for spam emails that are anything but romantic! Tens of millions of fake Valentine’s Day greeting-card messages will be sent out this Valentine’s Day, and it’s likely you will receive one. The e-mail will direct you to click on a link to retrieve your special electronic e-card. Beware. When you click on the link, a virus and malicious malware may be triggered to download onto your computer. The spyware that is installed often includes a key-logger program, which tracks the sites you visit while also logging every keystroke you make on your computer. Key-logger software can record user names, passwords, account numbers and personal PIN numbers, too. Ultimately, every key you press on the keyboard is captured. Everything you type into word-processing documents, spreadsheets or e-mail programs is recorded too. These spyware and malware programs typically run without your knowledge and are difficult to detect, and they continue to run in the background until they are detected and removed. If you receive a notice that a greeting card has been sent to you, before you even consider opening on an attachment or clicking on an embedded link, first check with the person it claims to be from and determine whether or not they actually sent it. Under no circumstances should you blindly trust that the card is legitimate simply because the email looks legitimate. If you discover that the e-mail is spam, delete it immediately—without clicking on the links. It’s also important to note that often scammers will instruct you to call a provided phone number. Never dial an unsolicited number provided in an unsolicited e-mail, text or voice mail, even if it purports to come from a company you deal with regularly. Instead, take the time to look up the legitimate phone number of the company and call that instead. There are, of course, variations to these types of phishing and spoofing scams. Spoofing scams occur when criminals create a false or “shadow” copy of a real website or e-mail. This allows the “spoofer” to acquire personal information such as passwords, credit card numbers, and account numbers. Even though the e-mail looks like the real thing—complete with authentic logos and working web links—it’s just an elaborate fake. The website where you’re instructed to enter your account information into—is also a fake. In some instances, really slick spoofers direct you to a genuine website and then arrange a pop up a window to appear over the site. Any information

entered, goes straight to the spoofer. Your information will most likely be sold to criminals who’ll use it to drain your accounts, ruin your credit and steal you and your sweetheart’s identity! Follow these tips to avoid having more than your heart stolen this Valentine’s Day! • Do not respond to unsolicited (spam) e-mail. • Do not click on links contained within an unsolicited e-mail. • Be cautious of e-mail claiming to contain pictures in attached files as these files may contain viruses. • Open attachments only from known senders—after confirmation it’s legitimate. • Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that ask for personal information. • Always compare the link in the e-mail to the link that you are actually directed to. • Log on to the official website instead of “linking” to it from an unsolicited e-mail. • Contact the actual business that supposedly sent the e-mail to verify if the e-mail is genuine. • Make sure you have a firewall and up-to-date antivirus software running on your computer at all times. • Update any available Security Patches. If you are doing online shopping for your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day, make sure that you type the retailer’s address directly into your browsers address bar, rather than following a link, which could be a spoofed site set up to trick you into entering your payment information. When inputting your credit card data, the URL should change to: “https://” rather than the normal “http://” —the S stands for secure. Just as you hope to surprise your loved one by coming up with new and creative ways to express your love on Valentine’s Day, identity thieves are busy cooking up surprises for you too. MacAfee, Norton, Microsoft and even the FBI have warned of a noticeable increase in the amount of tricks and traps placed on the web by scammers who use Valentine’s Day as their hook. Don't get swept up in the romance and give out personal information too freely. That old adage that claims “love is blind” may be true. But, when it comes to financial predators and identity theft –you can’t afford to be. Greeting card scams count on your curiosity –don’t let your curiosity compromise your computer or your identity. ◆ For more tips on protecting yourself from cyber crime and identity theft visit me at givemebackmycredit.com or email me directly at deniserichardson@givemebackmycredit.com

SAVE YOURSELF
Thanks to modern technology, mariners no longer have to go down with the ship By Capt. Mike Genoun It has come to our attention that many boaters put too much reliance on life jackets and inflatable rafts. These essential flotation devices save lives by extending one’s time in the water while praying for rescue. However, if you ever find yourself in an emergency floating at sea, how long do you want to hang around? Survival rafts packed with a safety valise offer rations to get you by for a couple of days, but we certainly don’t want to float around in a fish-eat-fish world for any length of time. We want to be rescued ASAP! Fortunately, modern technology provides boaters a host of advanced electronics that can help search and rescue crews find you fast. While every situation is different and there’s no one perfect way to plan for a catastrophe, you may have adequate time to make one last call for help. However if your radio is broken and you’re forced to get wet, there are tools that can help narrow your position to search and rescue teams who with your quick actions, will soon be on the hunt. First things first, advanced VHFs are extremely powerful tools that can greatly help in any rescue situation. Capable of transmitting your exact position, DSC equipped VHFs are essential for safety conscious boaters. Standard Horizon’s recently released Explorer GX1700 is the industry’s first DSC equipped VHF to feature built-in GPS. For those unfamiliar with DSC units, this standalone unit means you no longer have to wire your VHF to an NMEA integrated GPS. While we highly recommend traditional transmissions on VHF channel 16, VHFs aren’t the saving grace. If your radio is out of range or not functioning at all, there are some nifty communication devices that can also transmit your position. Delorme’s inReach satellite communicator is a unique device that can send pre-loaded text messages and trigger SOS alerts utilizing the widereaching Iridium satellite network. Iridium's whole earth coverage far surpasses that of other satellite systems, enabling two-way messaging, delivery confirmation, and pole-to-pole global connectivity. Furthermore, a high-sensitivity GPS chipset will reveal your location with accuracy to within five meters. If you’ve been forced off a vessel in a hurry without a chance to call for help, you better activate a PLB (personal locator beacon) or EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon). If you own an offshore boat you should have a registered EPIRB–no questions asked. EPIRBs provide twice the battery life of PLBS, are required to float and feature a strobe light to help reveal your position during low light conditions. However, if you often fish on other boats or your boat is not yet equipped with an EPIRB, you may want to invest in a portable PLB.You can toss one in your backpack, tackle bag, or keep one clipped to your belt loop. You just never know when it might come in handy. The newest PLBs feature integrated GPS that offer even greater positional accuracy. Instead of a two or three mile range offered with yesteryear’s traditional beacons, modern pocket-size units equipped with GPS can bring search crews within 100-meters of your transmit location. In the event of an emergency, it is important users securely fasten their PLB to the collarbone area of their life vest to keep the antenna out of the water. For freelance anglers unfamiliar with the safety equipment on different boats, we also recommend outfitting yourself with a compact inflatable life vest. And before you head offshore it’s important to open the life vest casing and fasten a piece of Velcro close to where your collarbone would be. Now attach the other piece of Velcro to your PLB and you are ready for anything.
Accidents happen when least expected. Prepare accordingly and rescue will come soon.
Unless you’re a trained swimmer, you probably won’t be able to tread water without a life vest for more than 12-hours. None of the aforementioned safety devices will be of much benefit if you can’t float long enough for rescue crews to find you. In the event of an emergency situation you should have donned your life vest way before the situation becomes life threatening. Don’t think about how you’ll look or how big your ego is.Think about surviving. Ditch bags and life rafts are even more safety measures worth considering, but beyond the scope of this editorial. Randy Boone spent 23 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a senior chief aviation Survivalman. With year’s experience and many hours logged searching for lost mariners, he tells us that survival is not about how long you can stay alive; it's about how quickly you can be found. Without the will to survive and the tools to transmit your location you don’t stand much of a chance as the elements will soon take their toll. Invest in advanced safety devices and be sure you have a game plan in case something goes very wrong when you least expect it.
Register To Be Rescued Rescue 21 is The Unites States Coast Guard’s advanced maritime computing, command, control and communications system that utilizes leading edge VHF-FM technology. Currently covering approximately 39,685 miles of coastline, Rescue 21 provides the USCG with upgraded tools and technologies to help rescue mariners in distress. However, according to the USCG approximately 90% of DSC distress alerts received lack position information. Furthermore, approximately 60% lacked a registered MMSI number. In order for the USCG to effectively respond to your alert you need a registered id number. BOATUS, (boatus.com/mmsi), Sea Tow (seatow.com/mmsi), and the U.S. Power Squadrons (usps.org/php/mmsi) offer free MMSI registration and info on how to setup and test your VHF. In addition, EPIRBs and PLBs must also be registered with NOAA (beaconregistration.noaa.gov/rgdb) to reap the full rewards. ◆ For more tips, tricks, tactics and techniques, visit FloridaSportFishing.com.

O N R E LI G I O N
So Be It…!
(Dedicated to Dayana and Noah Black)
By Reverend Jack Noble This past December I had the joy of participating in the marriage of a young man I have known for nearly two decades—he’s now twenty-eight, so I have been privileged to watch him mature over the years. (The same was true with most of the people in the wedding party). As I began the service with the customary words, “Friends, we are here today…” I found these pictures forming and dissolving in my mind’s eye. I could see this same young man, eight or ten years old running pall mall through that very spot where we were standing, and I could see him singing in the children’s choir and playing Joseph in the Christmas Pageant. Then, I could see him, as he matured, taking positions of genuine leadership here. But then as so often happens for me, at moments like that, I could see other images. I could see images of people that had played important, key roles in the development of these two young people. Their parents, of course, and their grandparents, their peers, and extended families, their teachers and professors and coaches. There were all of those people who have cheered them on, as it were, across the years, many of whom were present with us. Then though, there are all of “those others”—people they never knew who have influenced them. Those certainly, who influence their lives genetically, for instance, going back dozens and even hundreds of generations. There were the teachers of their teachers, and the coaches of their coaches, all of those other
people they had never known and never seen but who were influencing them nonetheless. And then of course there was the community “…those of us gathered.” I asked the congregation,“Do you promise to love and to pray for these young people, and to not take sides when either of them comes to you…” No favoritism. No side-taking. Just a quiet, constant defense against the fierce centrifugal forces that threaten every marriage. And again, the forming and dissolving of an image that: at least this much lies within our power; this much we can do. After the rings were exchanged there was this moment or two of silence. No one stirred. The faces of the onlookers were touched with something indefinable, a kind of timelessness, a sense of life fulfilling itself turning back and moving ahead. I thought. No certainty. No guarantees. Just a choice, an intention, a promise, a hope… With the ceremony complete the experience of living life day by day as a married couple begins. Go forth to meet it gladly. Love life, so that life will love you. The blessing of God be with you. So be it. So be it…I thought watching the two of them kiss, then go to embrace their parents. So be it! All of the hugs and the handshakes, the excited laughter, the unashamed tears. So be it murmured the building. So be it! ◆

Department of Energy Funding Renewable Energy Development By Al Siefert
The Department of Energy is implementing a goal from the Federal Government to be generating 80% of our energy from clean energy sources by 2035. With a budget of over 2.5 billion dollars the DOE is planning to fund many new and ongoing projects. There will be eight newly funded research and development projects to discover techniques to locate and develop geothermal energy. The funding for this research will be up to $70 million dollars. There will also be up to $350 million loan guarantee for a geothermal power-generation project in Nevada. This project is expected to produce 121 megawatts of power from three power plants. This project is expected to increase geothermal power in the state by 25 percent. Wind energy projects are also getting loan guarantees from the DOE. Over $135 million is going to fund a new wind generating project in New Hampshire. The plant is expected to generate 99 megawatts of power. Solar energy has the most potential and the DOE will be offering $2 billion in conditional commitments to build two new concentrating solar power projects in California. These plants are expected to generate 250 megawatts each which will double the current installed capacity in the United States.

Solar manufacturing will be eligible for $425 million in loan guarantees to improve the process of making the components that go into the solar panels. This should allow for more production and lower prices down the road. There are also plans for incentives for cities to streamline and digitize the permitting process and make it easier and faster to install roof top solar systems. Further light emitting diodes (LED) research and development is also being funded with $15 million to fund eight new projects that hopefully will increase production and develop faster ways to get them to market. There will also be $30 million going to training of engineering students to study manufacturing effency. Hopefully this investment will create jobs that will stay in the United States and give our Country a technology advantage in renewable energy. ◆ Al is a State Licensed Electrical Contractor and owner of Al Siefert Electric.
