Garden Club of Lighthouse Point Resumes Programs and Events

Wild Wild West Night with Lighthouse Christian School

Join the Garden Club as it begins the 2012-2013 year! President Mary Ann Payung will outline clubs upcoming programs and events as well as our Flower Show to be held in May 2013. Our meetings are held at St. Paul’s Educational Hall, 2700 N.E. 36th Street (E. Sample Road) and doors open at 11:00 AM. Horticulture tips will be presented by Master Gardeners Mona Johnston and Taryn Palo. All meetings are free and open to the public. For further information, contact Program Chairman, Mona Johnston at 954-975-9157 or visit our website: www.lhpgc.org.

Hollerin’ out to all gunslingers and barmaids, cowboys and Indians, bandits, gamblers, and Sheriffs…Round up your posse for a smokin’ time in the Wild Wild West! Lighthouse Christian School is excited to announce its fall fundraiser, “Wild Wild West Night.” The event will take place on November 9 at 6:30 PM at the Wyndham Sea Gardens in Pompano on A1A. Come on’ out and wear your wild west gear (you know you have a pair of boots or at least a cowboy hat in that closet!) and enjoy a night of dinner, dancing, poker tournament, Black Jack, football pool, dart competition, horse shoes, Jeopardy and of course, the Draw Down (lastticket-drawn-is-the-winner) raffle. The grand prizewinner of the draw down could walk away with at least $10,000! This is a fun, fabulous way to support our local school at the Pink Church. Dinner tickets are just $45. Play Football Squares for a $10 donation per square. Gators, Seminoles and Hurricanes, come cheer on your teams. You could win big! And, for a $100 donation, you can join in the poker tournament — the top five players are guaranteed prizes. If you want to get in on the draw down, tickets are $100 each. You can buy single tickets or they can be shared. During the draw down, each ticket number gets a pingpong ball, which gets placed in a big drum (much like bingo). One by one, the numbers are drawn and crossed off the list. When there are only five numbers remaining, the real fun begins. Those final five ticket holders can choose to share the pot or stay in the game and go for broke. The last number in the drum is the jackpot winner. This is the only kind of raffle where you don’t want your number to be pulled! There will only be 400 tickets sold, and you don’t have to be present to win the $10,000. Get your tickets, grab your best western gear, and get ready for a hootin’ hollerin’ night of dining, dancing and draw down fun with Lighthouse Christian School. “Wild Wild West Night” promises something for everyone, so don’t miss it. For more information or tickets, call Zina Dekkers at 954.383.3051 or email Zina@YourMRI.com Poker $100 includes dinner Dinner ticket only: $45

THOSE LYING EYES An Embarrassment to Every American

On August 5th, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson’s lying eyes told the American people that the North Vietnamese had attacked us in the Gulf of Tonkin. As a result, tens of thousands of American soldiers and millions of Vietnamese lost their lives in the only war America has lost. I have lived long enough to look into President Richard Nixon’s lying eyes on television in November of 1973, as he lied to millions of Americans when he said, “I’m no crook!” Nixon was defending his record in the famous Watergate debacle. He resigned the presidency in shame soon afterward. I watched President Bill Clinton’s lying eyes on television, as he lied to millions of Americans when he said, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman!” Incredible, outright lies concerning weapons of mass destruction by members of the Bush Administration shortly after 9/11 sent us into war, killing and maiming thousands of American soldiers in American history’s longest and never-ending war.

Now, here we are, in an embarrassing political campaign with our beloved country desperately calling out for TRUTH, and all we get are television HATE ADS filled with LIES, LIES and more LIES! The denigrating rhetoric of HATE and LIES in this political campaign are bombastic barrages of untruths that sinks America’s position in the eyes of the world to a record low. And the embarrassment never seems to end. In America, the land of the brave and the free, the very latest and last straw is witnessing the criminal attempt by a political party to disallow certain American citizens the right to vote for the sake of winning an election, and denying women the right to manage their own bodies! At press time, I believe we still had the right to express ourselves freely, so Americans, please shout it from the rooftops and let it be known that we are unabashedly ashamed of a political system that is completely broken— with no solution in sight. Or just live with the shame! Jon Frangipane, Publisher

Hi, my name is Spunky and I'm a 'young' eight year old Spaniel mix. I was adopted from FHS when I was eight months old but unfortunately the home I thought would be forever did not last due to child allergies. I am a very friendly, happy go lucky guy, who loves to play with my toys and playing fetch with you is my favorite thing to do. I am good with other dogs and older children too. Please give me a new family to share my love with. You can come and meet Spunky and all his friends at The Florida Humane Society, 3870 North Powerline Road, Pompano Beach (the northeast corner of Powerline and Sample next to the Citco Car Wash) Thursday - Sunday 12-4 or you can visit us online at floridahumanesociety.org 954-974-6152.

Local Divers Explore The Philippines Article by Eunice E. Hamblen

Photography by Linda Ianiello, Nils Jacobsen, Patrice Marker and Eunice E. Hamblen Editor’s note: An adventure-seeking group of divers from Lighthouse Point, including some from all over the world, set out on a journey to experience the waters of the Philippines. Those traveling are members of the Undersea Adventureres Dive Club that meets in Pompano Beach. This is another in a series of excellent articles submitted by local resident Eunice E. Hamblen.

e arrived in Cebu City in the Philippines, after a number of flights starting in Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta, on to Seoul, Korea, and then finally to Cebu City in the Philippines, flights taking 21 hours. After a night’s stay near the airport, we began our next trek, taking another six-hour drive and a ferryboat ride to arrive at our destination, the beautiful Atmosphere Resort on the southern end of Negros Island. Our plan included a seven-day trip aboard the Philippine Siren, heading toward Southern Vasayas and Cebu for live-aboard diving. Seven divers from Undersea Adventure Divers included Bob Weybrecht, Linda Ianiello, Roger and Nancy Stiles, Patrice Marker, Carol Schurtz and myself. We were the first guests at the newly-completed suites at the Atmosphere Resort. As such, we received a complimentary bottle of champagne that was immediately consumed, followed by a badlyneeded complimentary head massage at the Atmosphere Spa. The suites were so new that final touches like the caulking around the toilets, full-length mirrors and towel racks were added while we

All had a front porch with lounges and hammock swing. This is called living high on the hog. Muck diving (macro photography) was on the agenda for the first three days we spent just off Negros Island. Our Dive Master, RJ, was excellent at finding all kinds of critters, from the tiniest to the best disguised. Patrice said she took photos of things so miniscule that she could only see them later on her computer. RJ found an octopus that was as big as a breadbox sitting out in the open, looking very much like a rock. I swam quite close and over it before RJ brought it to my attention. What a thrilling sight! Other sea life included razor wrasses, white eyed eels, spiny seahorses, lots of pipefish, cuttlefish and, of course, lots of nudibranchs (colorful snail-type creatures). We also found smaller frogfish (a type of anglerfish) just off shore. The water was a comfortable 81-86 degrees. Night dives close to the resort included a mandarin fish dive that was popular. The reef close to the resort was damaged from a typhoon in February that provided considerable rubble for the mandarins. Our dive boats were outriggers that required a 5-6 foot drop into the water, but luckily had stairs for climbing back up. We used an oldfashion gangplank to board from the beach. The crew was very helpful with both inbound and outbound transport.

This included Nils Jacobsen, Joanne and Frank Morgan, Mike from Nevada and Deb from Montana. They were housed in the older suites that were very much like ours, but also included an outside bathtub that was little used. On Sunday morning, July 8th, we got a taste of early morning monsoons but this cleared up nicely for our trip to Apo Island. Apo was my kind of diving with beautiful coral reefs, anthias, bird wrasses, sea snakes angelfish with electric blue lips and stripes of all colors. Approximately 750 people live on this island, including a church, an elementary school, a dive resort and just like every other village, it had a well-used basketball court. Basketball seemed to be the national sport. Courts were everywhere.

Wednesday, July 11th called market day, we dove in the morning, spent an hour at this very busy local market and came back to the boat for one more dive before lunch. The market was large with a significant livestock trading area, including water buffalo, Brahmas, milk cows, tons of goats and pigs. I am still amazed at how much livestock was transported on Kawasaki motorcycles with a steel frame cargo carrier attached. In the city, the steel frame included three rows of benches for people transport. Of course, the people are not nearly as large as we are here, but it is still impressive to see a motorcycle transporting six people plus the driver. Saturday, July 14th we packed our belongings for a beach transfer to the Philippine Siren, our home for the next week. The two Continues on page 30

My Hero, Christian

I am 91 years old, and I’d like to tell you this story about a young man who saved my life. It was just before Christmas 2011 and I was out raking up leaves in my front yard. It was getting twilight-time, and I was in a hurry to finish the job, when suddenly I felt myself falling. When I came to, I discovered I could not get to my feet and I started yelling for help, but no one heard me. So, I crawled on my elbows to the street, so someone could see me. Soon, a small boy came by walking his dog to the nearby park. He came over and asked if he could help me. I started to cry with sheer thankfulness and asked him to get his daddy to call 911; so that little boy did just that. The paramedics were there to help me in minutes. Some months later, after hip surgery, I could hobble around a little, so I was out on my front lawn watering the grass. The same young man stopped and asked how I was, and how was my hip. I was happy to see him again and asked where he lived and he said “down the street and around the corner, in a purple house.” His name is Christian Martino. Many more months passed, and one morning I awoke and thought about the miracle when this young man saved my life! I wanted to reward him for his good deed. I got dressed and went looking for him and found the purple house, down the street and around the corner. I parked and walked up the steps to the front door, rang the bell and waited. I could see the family swimming in the pool through the huge glass platted front door, and sure enough, there was My Hero coming to greet me at the door. He immediately recognized me and asked me in. I offered a reward, but he turned it down. Christian shared with me that he just came out of the hospital because he choked on some food, and he could not cough it up and couldn’t get his breath. Christian saved my life and God saved his life for being so brave and kind. My Hero and I share another fate: we are both artists. He is 12 years old, and Picasso has nothing on My Hero! I’m glad to say we all became friends: his mama, Tina, dad, Frank, sister, Bella Rose and My Hero…Christian!

My Wife, My Co-Pilot By Alan Williamson

It’s hard to quantify how lousy my sense of direction is. If I had to guess, I’d venture to say that, at 55, my frequent navigational goofs have added up to a total of five solid years of my life spent completely and hopelessly lost. And that’s just while driving. If you factor in false steps on foot, you’re up to seven years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first. The two years squandered getting lost on foot I can live with. After all, the average adult spends two years of their life just waiting for the guy ahead of them at the post office to pick between the American flag stamps or the Legends of BoogieWoogie stamps. It’s the five years lost in my car that makes me melancholy. After countless misguided journeys left me older but no wiser, my wife and long-suffering co-pilot Sherry, suggested I keep a travel journal to chronicle trips of various durations, monitor driving patterns and—hopefully—learn from my mistakes. Submitted for your amazement and pity are a couple of excerpts from that journal. Orlando, August 2006. While driving from our hotel to a nearby attraction called Church Street Station, my wife and I become lost. What makes this unremarkable event remarkable is that once off the highway we actually see Church Street Station. In fact, we see it several times at close range as we drive from block to block. The problem is that a series of oneway streets keeps us from making the turns we want to make and soon Church Street Station disappears into the night. Just when it appears things can't get worse, the lighted, paved road we are on turns into an unlighted, dirt road and dead-ends abruptly at a metal gate by some rundown warehouses on the outskirts of the city. My wife, who has been uncommonly quiet for the last few minutes of our descent into oblivion, turns and says: “Is this the part where we stumble onto a drug deal going down and are bound and gagged while they take our car?” She’s such a kidder. New Jersey, October 2009. While back in my home state for a cousin’s wedding, I decide to show my wife some of my old stomping grounds. Things so pretty well at first as I

successfully find my way back to my first apartment, the office I worked at right out of college, and the state park were I use to hike. But heading back to the hotel it all unravels. It seems that some of my “old stomping grounds” were stomped on by other people in the years since I left. Their overzealous and gratuitous stomping resulted in new roads, new scenery, and more opportunities for me to get spectacularly, irreversibly lost. Soon, we find ourselves in a gritty, bars-on-the-windows kind of town with the gas gauge almost on empty, darkness falling fast, and the sound of broken glass crunching under our tires as we stop for a red light. My wife, who has been uncommonly quiet for the last few minutes of our plunge into purgatory, turns and says: “Is this the part where we run out of gas, are taken hostage by a drifter named “Skunk” and are featured in a story on Dateline intitled “Last Exit to Horror Cabin.” I’m telling you, she’s such a joker. So what have I learned about my horribly deformed sense of direction from my travel journal experiment? I’ve learned that when I come to an intersection and confidently go left, I should have gone so far to the right it would make a conservative republican proud. I’ve learned that when I decisively go straight ahead, I should have turned 20 miles back while there were still useful landmarks like buildings and living people. And I’ve learned that I can continue to count on being an accidental tourist paying tolls on roads I shouldn’t have been on and asking directions at gas stations so far removed from where I’m going that the name of my destination is “a new one” on the locals. Just last night, coming home from work, I got detoured into an unfamiliar neighborhood and lost my bearings. As I circled the same streets for the third time, I could almost hear my wife say “Is this the part where we decide to buy a home here and start life fresh instead of trying to find our way back out to the main road?” My wife. She sure makes a lot of sense sometimes. ◆

The Garden Lady Says… Starting From Seed By Donna Torrey

Seeds are amazing things. Take a look around and notice all of the plant life that surrounds us, from the blades of grass to the tallest of trees; all were once a tiny seed. Some seeds are very large, others so tiny that they are invisible to the naked eye, and float on wind currents, even across oceans. As a gardener, there is nothing quite as exciting as germinating seeds! Somehow, when we have raised a plant from a seed, it becomes like one of our children. It’s just fun and rewarding to watch them mature. Now is the right time in South Florida to plant seeds of flowers and vegetables. Here are some tips that can make your seed sowing more successful. Most seeds are best started in pots, and then set out into the garden when they are larger. Germinating in pots allows us to control the amounts of water and sunlight, and we can protect them when they are most vulnerable. I like to use old 6-inch nursery pots, which most of us have lying around. Use a good quality potting soil. Wet the medium first and then place the seeds on top; you can put the whole packet in at once. A common mistake is to bury seed too deeply. As a rule of thumb, bury the seeds no deeper than the diameter of the seed itself. This is often miniscule, which is the point; many

seeds actually require light to germinate. (This is why mulch inhibits the growth of weed seeds.) After you have carefully covered the seeds, use a gentle mist or watering can with a soft spray to water them in, then label and date. Be sure to water daily. Seeds need constant moisture to break the seed coat and you can put a shallow saucer underneath to help with this. Keep them in at least four hours of direct sunlight, preferably morning. Now, get ready to experience the miracle of germination. It can take from one day (this has really happened to me!) to months, depending on the type of plant. A plant is born with baby leaves, which often look very different from the true leaves, which will sprout out next. When these leaves appear, you can transplant them into separate pots, or directly into the ground. Never let a seedling dry out. Fertilize with fish emulsion and keep vigilant for a couple more weeks. Soon, you will beam with pride, and have lots to share with special friends. Happy Gardening! ◆ Garden gate Nursery is located in the Pompano Citi Centre. Donna can be reached at 954-783-GATE, or at www.donnasgardengate.com

Exchange Club Membership Drive Photos by Debra Todd

A meeting of the Exchange Club that was supposed to take place on the beautiful grounds of the Sample McDougald House on Saturday, August 25th was suddenly changed because of threatening weather. But it was a rather pleasant change having the event at the beautiful home of Earl and Betsy Maucker.

This was a membership drive, in that Exchange members invited friends and others to join this fine organization that has raised thousands of dollars for charitable causes through its many years of existence.

inflatables picked up twelve USA Divers plus three additional divers for transport to the Siren. Our dive party added Mike from Germany, Mark (the cutie) from Australia and Jeanine from Switzerland. Poor Mark, age 36, saw the “Singledivers.com” on the website and thought he would be with young single people. He still got lots of attention from us old cougars! We sailed north inside Cebu straits and dove a popular dive spot near the village of Moalboal on Sunday, July 15th and saw lots of turtles, large-mouth mackerels and lots of pipefish on this day. Monday we dove Pescador Island that sits in the middle of the strait with fisherman and many colored bangas on the north side where dynamite fishing destroyed the reef. The current flows north, so the south side was full of schooling fish along the wall and beautiful corals in the shallows. Pescador Island is known for its large schools of sardines and fusilier that attract the big game fish. The mesmerizing wall of small fish is fascinating to watch. This day at lunchtime we witnessed a sailfish jumping several times just off our stern. Tuesday, July 17th, after diving Sumilon Island South, we sailed the short distance to Oslob, Cebu where savvy village leaders have commercialized whale shark encounters in their newly created sanctuary. They set up Individual single-person outriggers called

The Siren divers were assigned to one of these groups and we were allowed one hour to snorkel or dive with the whale sharks. We observed four youngish whale sharks from 20-30 feet hanging next to their banga feeding station. These gentle giants were quite a sight. One entertaining banga captain was taking his whale shark on a “walk” around the entire group. Another was throwing the krill at the snorkelers, so the whale shark swam directly into the camera. This was a special diving experience. The day’s last dive and night dive was on Sumilan Island’s northwest side. Night brought out all the

different colored sea urchins, decorator crabs, eels and various crustaceans. As a novice night diver, I was fascinated by all the tiny sets of reflective eyes staring up at me from shrimps, crabs and other mysterious critters. Butterfly fish were wedged face down into the corals and parrot fish were wedged even further underneath, so only small patches of color could be seen. They wanted to save themselves from the carnivorous night raiders. Wednesday, July 18th, the wind and waves started to pick up. Getting on and off the dingy was challenging for the next three days. We traveled back to south Negros for another mandarin dive, and then cruised overnight to the East side of Cebu for diving Panglao and Balicasag on Thursday and Friday. It was here that we saw the giant school of jacks. It was another hypnotizing experience. There were many large green turtles, baby eels, orangutan crab, blennies and dart gobies.

The weather continued to deteriorate on Friday, July 20th. Strong currents and big waves accompanied the first dive. The second to last dive of the Siren trip was called the “Lighthouse that used to be called Hammerhead Point until the Japanese fished out all the hammerheads. It was a beautiful wall dive until currents dropped visibility to zero. We ended our dive in the shallows where the reef was beautiful. Topside the swells were large and rain was pouring down. In summary, the Atmosphere Resort was over the top and the food was outstanding. The Obi ice cream, which is purple and made from a root, was special. The Siren was well run and comfortable and once you got past the diesel fumes it was an enjoyable live-aboard. This trip was well organized and most enjoyable for UnderSea Adventure divers of South Florida.

Our Once in a Lifetime Adventure! Tanzania and the Serengeti Article by Pam Euston

Photos by Pam and Donald E. Euston

This article is a continuation of the travelogue that appeared in our September 2012 issue. The story and photographs were submitted to Lighthouse Point Magazine by Donald and Pamela Euston.

THE SERENGETI Sunday, June 10 Another early start, as we were leaving today for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and our final destination—the Serengeti National Park, also a World Heritage Site. We stopped at the entrance of the NCA and visited the Visitor’s Center. The parking lot was filled with baboons. We had been warned not to leave any widow down. Another group forgot the warning and were immediately mobbed by several baboons looking for a handout. I’ve never seen people exit a car so fast.

Our three wonderful guides, Ridas Michael Lizair, Joshua Loy Lovuto and Nixon Sarumba on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.

Oldupai Gorge.

Baboon looking for a handout at the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our first stop after that was at Olduvai Gorge, known as “The Cradle of Mankind.” It is a steep-sided ravine in the Great Rift Valley that stretches through eastern Africa, and is thirty miles long. The name is a misspelling of Oldupai Gorge, that was adopted as the official name in 2005. Oldupai is the Maasai word for the wild sisal plant, Sansevieria ehrenbergli, which grows in the gorge. It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world, and was made famous by the work done here by Louis and Mary Leakey. They were responsible for most of the excavations and discoveries of the hominid fossils in the gorge. Excavations are still going on here. We continued on our way, and the topography had changed drastically since we left the Tloma Lodge that morning. We had gone 36

from almost a rain forest to a flat, arid desert. Finally, we arrived at the entrance of the Serengeti National Park that is the size of the state of Connecticut. The park was established in 1951, and encompasses over 6,000 square miles. Serengeti is Swahili for “the endless plain,” or “the land that goes on forever.” At 4:00 pm, we arrived at our camp called Camp Prince Charles, so named because he and Camilla stayed here in 1995. Somehow I could not picture Camilla sleeping in a tent in the Serengeti. Wonder which tent held all of her hats?!

Monday, June 11 Some of the group got up at 4:30 am to take a hot air balloon ride at dawn. We were picked up at 5:30 am and made our way to the launch site, encountering a family of hyenas, zebras and wildebeest. We had taken a balloon ride in Myamar at Bagan in 2010 and really enjoyed it. There were three balloons on Dawn at our camp on the Serengeti. that morning, and each basket held thirteen passengers. The best way to get an understanding of how vast the Serengeti is to see it from above…it really does seem to go on forever. We flew silently over a pride of lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest. You could see the game trails running all over the plain. After landing, we toasted our flight with champagne. This is an old but traditional ceremony that goes back to the 1700s in France. Pilatre de Rozier is considered the “father” of hot air ballooning. Before taking off himself, he sent a balloon up with a sheep, chicken, and a rooster. This flight lasted fifteen minutes. The first time he landed in a farmer’s field, the locals thought that he was an alien. When the French king heard of this, he furnished champagne for future flights. That way the locals would know that Pilatre was from France and not outer space. That’s why whenever you take a balloon ride, you will toast your flight with champagne. Another bit of trivia…our word “pilot” comes from Pilatre, the first to fly a flying object! We visited a Nature Center where we encountered many little rock hyrax—they look like a guinea pig on steroids, and are actually related to elephants! During our travels, we spotted a leopard in a tree, and more zebras and giraffes. uring our stay in the Serengeti, we would get up very Watching the sun rise over the Serengeti from early and be on the a hot air balloon; what a way to start the day! road by 7:00 am and

then come back to camp at noon. At 3:00 pm, we would head out again as most of the animals rest during the heat of the day and are hard to find. We would stay out until 6:00 pm or 6:30 pm and dinner would be at 7:00 pm with a cocktail hour around a campfire before dinner. It was safe within the confines of the camp, but were given strict boundaries of where not to go and were reminded every evening not to leave our tents during the night. Temperatures go from one extreme to the other. It gets down in the 50s at night, and the mornings are chilly. Once the sun comes up, it starts to get warm very quickly so you have to dress in layers as the thermoA rock hyrax; looks like a guinea meter starts to rise after dawn. pig on steroids!

Tuesday, June 12 Up again early, and off by 7:00 am. About 7:30 am, we came upon a male lion and two females lying in the middle of the road. We must have taken hundreds of pictures of them. The sun was Male lion in the middle of the road early in the morning on June 12. coming up and in the golden light of the morning their tawny coats looked beautiful against the dry grass. They were five feet from us and just looked at us. The male and one of the females had several scars on their faces from past fights. They are the second largest member of the cat family, after the tiger. The lion population in Africa has been reduced by half since the early 1950s and today, fewer than 21,000 remain in the entire country. Both male and female roar, as we soon found out and their roar can be heard five miles away, as we would also find out tonight. We watched them for about 45 minutes and then reluctantly went on our way. Next we came upon a dazzle of zebras…that’s what a group of zebras are called. They are very social animals and no two zebras have the same stripe pattern. Their stripes are as individual as fingerprints are to humans. The babies are brown and white and the brown gradually turns to black. No one knows what the stripes are for. Someone asked Ridas if anyone had tried to domesticate them. He said they had, but that zebras have a very weak back and cannot carry much weight, so the idea of domesticating them was forgotten. We came to three female lions lying together in a tree; Ridas judged their age at about 1-1/2 years. The rest of the pride was nearby. Next we stopped at the Retima Hippo Pool, after passing by a large herd of Cape Buffalo. Boy, are hippos smelly…and big! The big males can tip the scale at 4000 pounds and are hoofed vegetarians, feeding on grass, fallen fruit, and occasionally on cultivated crops such as sugar cane or corn during the night. They spend most of their time in the water. More people are killed in Africa by the hippo than A lone wildebeest.

They are nocturnal and live in territorial clans of related individuals, sometimes up to eighty. Hyenas are hunters and scavengers and will eat just about anything. They make a variety of sounds: wailing calls, howling screams, and the wellknown “laughter,” which is used to alert other clan members of a food source.

Their yawn does not mean they are sleepy or bored but rather is a threat gesture. They have long, razor-sharp teeth that are capable of cutting a small boat in two. Late that day, we came upon a lone cheetah sunning him or herself on a rock. These cats are aerodynamically built for speed and can run 70 mph at full speed, although not for long. The cheetah is a sprinter and when it runs, only one foot at a time hits the ground. There are two points in its 20 to 25 foot stride when no feet touch the ground, as they are fully extended and then totally doubled up. Nearing full speed, the cheetah is running at about three strides per second. A cheetah can accelerate from zero to 40 mph in three strides and then up to 70 mph in a few more. It is the cat with short, blunt semi-retractable claws that grip the ground like Flamingos in a small lake in the Serengeti. cleats for traction Their pink color comes from the crustaceans when turning. and other shellfish that they eat. Their paws are less rounded than the other cats, and their pads are hard, similar to tire treads, to help them in fast, sharp turns. Finally, as we were almost back to camp, we came upon some flamingos and Cape Buffalo. Of Africa’s Big Five (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo), the Cape Buffalo is considered the most dangerous.

After four nights, there we were, reluctantly leaving the Serengeti. It took over an hour to get out of the park at the Naabi Hill Gate, and for our

guides to finish all the paper work. From the Serengeti, we drove to the Ngorongoro Crater and descended to the floor of the caldera. It is the main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. When the giant volcano that was here prior to exploding collapsed on itself ,some two to three million years ago, it left a crater 2000 feet deep; its floor covers 100 square miles. The crater’s rim is 7500 feet above sea level, the highest altitude we have reached on our trip. Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 15,000 to 19,000 feet high. It takes a while to reach the floor of the crater, down a narrow switch-back road. Not for the faint hearted! During our visit we saw thousands of flamingos along Lake Magadi. And then we came upon three more females lying in the middle of the road. On our way out late in the afternoon, we saw a black rhino in the distance. We also came upon two secretary birds close to the road. By 4:00 pm, we were back at the crater’s rim and on our way back to the Tloma Lodge where we would spend two more nights before returning to Arusha.

Friday, June 15 Today, we are going to visit the Njia Panda Primary School and then will go to a brick factory. Our guide at the factory is Paulo Sulle and he is a member of the Iraqw tribe, also known as the Mbulu among Swahili speakers. His tribe came into this region from Ethiopia. They are an

Paulo was very personable and friendly. The brick works are actually a cooperative owned by fifty families in the area. During the past decade, the local brick-making industry has flourished in this part of Tanzania. The bricks are made by hand. The clay is dug up, pressed into wooden molds and the wet bricks are left to dry in the sun. Once they are dry, they are stacked, covered with wood in a makeshift kiln and burned for one to two days. On Saturday, the kids help the parents by carrying the bricks on their heads to the kiln. This quarry is about thirty years old and has about another twenty years of life left. Brick-built homes are now rapidly replacing the traditional mud huts. Roofs are made of grass or corrugated sheets. This is a wonderful example of a community working together. After visiting the quarry, Paulo invited us to his home where we Pam and Paolu in his house with met his oldest son, small niece, a zeze, sort of a gourd violin. grandma and his wife, Paulina. We were served a traditional corn and bean dish and after our lunch, Paulo got out a zeze, sort of a gourd violin that had a beautiful sound. His son joined in on the ngoma or drum and we were taught a traditional but very exhausting dance. This is my third “zumba” class in country. Then it was back to the Tloma Lodge where we got packed for our trip back to Arusha tomorrow.

Saturday, June 16 We left early for our three-hour drive to Arusha, making a few stops along the way. Our KLM flight back to Amsterdam departed Kilimanjaro International Airport that evening and the Olasiti Lodge was providing us with a day room, so that we could rest up prior to our flight. Where has the time gone…it seems as though we just got here. At 5:00 pm, Ridas took us to the airport and we said goodbye to Joshua and Nixon who have become such good friends, and have taught us so much about this beautiful country. En route, we had a good view of Mount Meru and off in the distance, Mount Kilimanjaro. We took off at 9:00 pm and flew 45 minutes to Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean where we changed crews, and where our Airbus was refueled. hen it was off to Amsterdam, almost ten hours away. We caught a Delta flight to Atlanta in Amsterdam and arrived back in Miami about 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 17, tired and happy to be home, but reliving in our heads the wonderful and exciting adventure we had just finished.

How do I describe Tanzania and the Serengeti to someone who has never been there? There were so many extraordinary experiences over the course of this trip, but the highlight had to be the Serengeti. It truly is “the land that goes on forever,” as the Maasai so aptly described it. This is where Africa’s mystery, rawness and power are everywhere around you, and where the circle of life can be experienced as in few places on this earth. On its vast and treeless plains, one of the earth’s most impressive natural cycles repeats itself over and over again, as thousands of hoofed animals, driven by rhythms of survival, move constantly, in search of fresh grasslands. Of course, the wildebeest are the most famous of these mammals and are, therefore, the main attraction. But the Serengeti offers visitors even more. These cycles have been going on for centuries and will continue to do so long after we are gone. It is amazing how everything works together in perfect harmony, and it has always been this way. A visit to the Serengeti should be on everyone’s Bucket List. The only problem though, is that you don’t want to leave— and when you get home, you want to go back. I guess the best way to sum up a visit to this magical place is to quote a passage from “The Outermost House” by Henry Beston that describes a year on Cape Cod. I discovered this book as an undergraduate at Indiana University and it has many beautiful passages about wildlife. This is my favorite: “We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time; fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.”

CUSTOM SHOOTOUT FINDS A GREAT CATCH! Article by Skip Smith

Custom Shootout 2012 was held at the beautiful Abaco Beach Resort & Boat Harbour Marina. With 37 of the finest Custom built boats in the world, some boats up to 85' in length competing for this coveted title, it was just awesome walking down the dock looking at these machines, all ready to fish. With a great forecast of great weather ahead, the fleet with the best crews on board set out to catch and release the most billfish in three days of fishing. Photographer Debra Todd was sent up in a helicopter to catch these boats in action; from chasing down these boats that cruise at 35 knots, to finding the boats that were fighting fish. As usual, she managed to provide these amazing shots. After the smoke cleared, there were 99 billfish caught and released, and the best part is that $70,000 was raised for Breast Cancer Research.

Photos by Debra Todd

While Abaco Beach Resort spoiled the boat owners and their crews with the best food ever at the Billfish Awards dinner, it was the first place boat Wave Paver and Garlington Yachts that celebrated their victory through the night. Second place went to Plane Simple, a Spencer yacht, and third place went to Bear Trap, another Spencer. The Custom Shootout is a 100% charity-fishing tournament. www.customshootout.com

Roth IRA: For Your Retirement ... and Beyond You may already know that the Roth IRA is a great retirement-savings vehicle. But did you realize that some of its benefits could pay off for the next generation of your family? When you contribute to a Roth IRA, your earnings can grow tax free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. And the potential for tax-free earnings can continue even when your beneficiaries inherit your Roth IRA, though you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor on this issue. Furthermore, since you aren’t required to take distributions from your Roth IRA, you can leave your account intact for as long as possible, potentially leaving more money available for your beneficiaries. Your Roth IRA is, first and foremost, an investment for your retirement. But, as we’ve seen, it may be of value in other ways, too.

The Key to One’s Health is Balance! Nutrition and maintenance to the body includes frequent exercise and massage treatment. By Generosa Dingal

Massage therapy is the ancient art of the manipulation of the body muscle structure; this includes the superficial, deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function and aid in the healing process, and also promote relaxation and well-being. The word massage comes from the French massage “friction of kneading,” or from Arabic massa meaning “to touch, feel or handle,” or from Latin massa meaning “mass, dough,” or from the Greek verb “to handle, touch, to work with the hands, to knead dough.” In distinction the ancient Greek word for massage was anatripsis, and the Latin was frictio. Massage involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure—structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving— tension, motion, or vibration. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can help rejuvenate the entire body! Massage treatment can target specific area of discomfort to remove toxins. Where there is pain is where the toxins are residing.

By Andrea Corn, Psy.D.

Dear Dr. Corn, I did not expect to be divorced, but now that I am, I keep reminding myself this is all for the best. However, I find myself doing the opposite of what I’ve been preaching. Instead of becoming socially active again, I find myself declining invitations from friends and avoiding places I used to enjoy. Why am I stuck and why can’t I move on? Dear Nearly Sleepless, Sometimes it can be extraordinarily difficult to start anew, especially if there are painful emotions tying you to the past. You’ve recently ended a marriage, and with that, certain wishes and dreams were abruptly halted as well. It sounds like your behavior is saying you still need time to grieve the loss of this intimate relationship that once meant the world to you. Can you try and view your wanting alone time as an understandable reaction. Perhaps this is your own way of saying you need this time to heal yourself. Rather than regard feelings as an unwelcome intrusion, they can also be a sign there are matters to sort out.

52

Based upon on the old-age principle, that an open energy system surges within and around us, Massage Practice Therapeutic Touch, describes how to balance and energize the body by allowing the flow of this energy field. According to Generosa Dingal, a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, there are modalities in the massage in which some movements are adjusted by stroking of pressure points, or just simply by lay our hands on or just above the body to release blockages in the person’s energy field. This ancient practice known as the “laying on of hands” is a conscious transfer of energy that occurs when you relax and let your mind be disconnected from the world and only focus on healing their mind and body as well as to connect yourself to the one who is the main source of energy, which is the Creator. To give so effective and powerful treatment, the therapist must be free of worries so that it brings peace and healing to her/his clients. This article was submitted by Gen’s Spa located at 750 E. Right now, your physical distancing may be a way to protect yourself from experiencing sadness, guilt, or even anger. Try to be patient with yourself. Everyone has their own timetable when it comes to matters of the heart. Rather than feel stuck or helpless, remember you have the power to transform yourself by looking within and understanding yourself on a deeper level. Perhaps you can use this time as an opportunity to learn something important about yourself that you never considered before. Then, who knows what new experiences, relationships, and enjoyment you can seek and create in your life. ◆ Dr. Andrea Corn is a licensed Psychologist who is in private practice in Lighthouse Point, FL. Change Your Thinking—Change Your Body The way you look at food can be key to your success By Kelly Doyle

What is your vice? Whether you want to lose a few pounds of fat, get your body in optimal condition for a competition, or just feel your best, most of us seem to eat by the guidance of our taste buds rather than our needs. So the question is; why do we eat foods that we know we shouldn’t? I have seen a lot of people go up and down on the scale over the years. The one common problem I hear concerns attitude toward food. Instead of eating a salad, you may decide to treat yourself to a hotdog or chips. The word treat, in conjunction with a poor choice of food, is a huge mental obstacle. What exactly are you telling yourself? You need to start thinking of food as what it really is: Fuel for the body, delicious, but the main objective is fuel. Food is meant to keep the body breathing, moving; alive. When athletes train for an event, they don’t eat fries and processed foods, they eat whole foods, fresh, raw. They eat a variety of colors and nutrients. I have friends that have lowered blood pressure, cholesterol and treated inflammation, not with medication, but with food. It behaves in your body like a chemical and it is potent. You make decisions for your body every day. Feeding yourself is not about what you crave, it is about what you need.

What Your Community Can Do for Your Online Reputation By Jennifer Kovacs

Presenting to a group of non-profits in Miami last week, I realized how people were more aware the personable relationship with their community, but not their online relationship. If you are one of those business owners involved in multiple Chambers, networking groups, partnership arrangements and such, this needs to be a factor in your online reputation. Just like in the real world, you want people to know you are involved. Well, the same goes for the web world. If you are affiliated with a community group, you want to ensure that information is online and searchable. As a best practice, you should Google your business name or professional name to see what relationships have been established online. So, for example, with your local Chamber(s) you want to make sure your business is listed in the directory. If you are registered with any of the big directories like Manta for businesses, Yelp for restaurants, Wikipedia for notoriety etc., to achieve top rankings on the search engines, part of the equation is creating a bigger online footprint. Registering your business with reputable organizations and directories creates a sense of credibility beyond the simple search. If a potential customer finds your information on a reliable source, the more likely they will be to contact you. It’s another form of word of mouth. Research and discover ways to build your reputation on the web. Your online profile is like a dating profile; your business needs be attractive and engaging to the prospective date. The other day, I sat with an associate in my Wednesday networking group to have a long overdue one on one. She showed me a list of her online credentials, including groups she is involved,

Typically when you crave something, it is your body communicating a need that is not being filled. It could be anything from water to sleep. As you get more in touch with your eating habits, the answer may become apparent. There is a healthier version of almost any food. I don’t think it is a good idea to deprive yourself of foods you love. If chocolate is a favorite, then make it as healthy as possible. The mousse recipe below is loaded with nutrients. Keeping in mind it is a dessert, it is a perfect example of a wonderful way to, let’s say ‘have your cake and eat it too!’ Perfect for the holidays — RAW Chocolate Mousse: In a blender: 4 avocados, ½ C water, ½ C maple syrup, 3 C Cacao (not coco) powder and ¼ C coconut oil. Toss a few organic fresh berries on top. You can find all of these ingredients at Whole Foods Market. Look at food as one of the many tools in your box to look and feel your best. Research for yourself; think of replacing rather than erasing! The choices are limitless and the benefits are huge. Good luck to an All Natural You! ◆

boards she sits on, and awards she has won. Knowing this business owner for years, I already knew about her personable reputation, but I had no idea of her real commitment to community and customer service. The proof was in the pudding, and the pudding was proudly displayed all over the internet. The business name showed up on at least a dozen different sites from business groups, non-profit sites, and of course Social Media sites. Imagine I didn’t know this woman and was looking for her services online. Who I would be more likely to give my business to, her or her untraceable competitor? She had been written up in papers and congratulated numerous times for her achievements on important website (resources). This type of publicity sells itself. As mentioned earlier, I was hosting a seminar for arts groups regarding their participation in a new online directory being launched, and there seemed to be a lot of questions. The only question should really be, why wouldn’t you register? Get your business on as many community and professional sites that are relevant to your success as possible. Make sure to display that information on your own website as well. Create a community page or Blog about your involvement. ◆ Happy Webbing!

Cantankerously Yours

Yoga Positions, Curmudgeon-Modified By Wendell Abern

Dear Yogaphiles, Since I became a widower almost three years ago, my kids— both of whom live in Chicago—have been behaving like remote control nannies. One of them calls every night. My son nags me endlessly about my eating habits. I thought I had him mollified when I assured him I had cut down on eating red meat to only two times day. But now he’s on a new kick, insisting that I inject fish into my diet more often than once a year. I have stubbornly held out. But every week I get an e-mail with a recipe for tilapia. Or grouper. Or some other slithery thing from the sea. My daughter is even worse. She constantly harps about staying in good shape, knowing full well I am philosophically opposed to physical exercise of any kind. She goes running. Running, for God’s sake! Her latest kick: bicycling. She bought a second-hand bicycle at a yard sale. Next thing I know, she’ll be cycling to Bolivia. But her worst nudging concerns yoga. “You’ve gotta try it, dad,” I’ve heard a thousand times. “It has worked wonders for me. Helps my back. Helps my sinus problems. Helps anything that hurts! And it gives me peace of mind. Just try it.” In an effort to shut her up once and for all, I visited Google and typed in, “Yoga positions,” and was informed: 2,630,000 results. I selected one site arbitrarily, which includes descriptions and illustrations of dozens of positions. I selected one described as, “One of the most widely recognized yoga poses: DownwardFacing Dog.” I tried it. I bent over, keeping my knees straight, elevating my rear skyward and stretching my arms way out in front and leaning on my hands. I now looked like a giant triangle. After holding the pose for about a minute, I realized something: I couldn’t get up. Reluctant to lowering myself onto my tendonitis-prone knees, I decided to simply tip over gently onto my side. This worked splendidly, except for the two cracked ribs. I pored over other poses and was struck by the impossibilities of the majority of them. Especially positions such as, “Hanumanasana, or Monkey Pose.” Hanuman, a figure in Hindu mythology, literally means having large jaws. To even attempt this pose—stretching out one’s legs until they are both completely parallel to the ground—would clearly result in an emergency room visit for me. I then looked at “King Pigeon,” “Cow Face,” “Heron,” and others, and made a quick observation: there are 206 bones in the human body, and most of these poses are designed for people with only 138. More importantly, yoga positions assume an entirely new way of life. And a new way of thinking about life. Fine for some people. But I get a bit irascible when someone or some belief implies my lifestyle needs changing. So I decided to create some of my own yoga positions, designed especially for people my age who are relatively content with life, and have a tendency to get a bit cranky now and then. To wit: 56

Lighthouse Point Magazine | www.lhpmag.com

Crane Posing on Bent Leg Pose. For men only. This position, to be attempted only while lying prone on one side, requires you to raise one leg in a fetal position, thereby permitting you to watch a ball game on TV while telling your wife you can’t mow the lawn because you sprained your ankle. Giraffe Reaching for a Fig Pose. Important for a family dinner at an expensive restaurant. Crane your neck as if looking around for someone you know, then deftly slip the check in front of your cheap brother-in-law. Smiling Hyena Pose. Another pose created specifically for eating out at restaurants. After telling pushy progeny you are going to have trout almondine for dinner, smile smugly and order a double cheeseburger. Laughing Hyena Pose. Same as above when ordering two double cheeseburgers. Chimp Hugging Himself Pose. Critical when riding shotgun with Aunt Millie, who should have given up driving when she smashed through her garage door because she forgot to open it on the way to her 98th birthday party. Frog Splayed Out on a Lily Pad Pose. Lie down flat on your tummy, spread out your arms and legs, relax and take a one-hour nap. Then tell your spouse you have done your stretching exercises for the day. Impatient Kangaroo Pose. For women only. Cross your arms and tap your foot menacingly. Appropriate for any woman after visiting a hairdresser and then asking her husband: “Notice anything new?” Nodding Canary Pose. From an ancient Hebrew tradition. Sit quietly and nod your head back and forth slowly in order to prepare yourself emotionally for stressful events, such as the annual Yom Kippur dinner with Aunt Bertha, who always insists on bringing the brisket, which is stringy and overdone. Hiding Turtle Pose. While sitting or lying down, cross your arms, cover your ears, shut your eyes, pull your legs up close to your body and try to make yourself into a very small ball in an attempt to shut out the rest of the world. Extemely useful when listening to political commercials. * * * Okay, it’s a work in progress. But I’ve become very enthused about future possibilities. Right now, I’m sitting in a restaurant assuming the “Smiling Hyena” pose because I’ve just called my son and told him I’m having Flounder Piccata for dinner, and am waiting for my order of Cheesy Double Beef Burritos. Sincerely, Wendell Abern

Legal Matters

Marital and Family Law Perspectives

Lessons from Secretariat Can Change Our Community By Catherine Iaconis Favitta

Having retired from my marital and family law practice, my interests and attention have turned from day to day court matters to examination of the causes of marital and family problems. My concern for the future of our community increases with news about family violence and the legal aid crisis resulting from an overload of domestic violence and divorce cases involving children. In my opinion, the root cause is the lack of personal health that is severely crippling parents’ ability to make good decisions about their finances and future, find and do income producing work, communicate respectfully, keep their frustrations under control and raise their children with love and appropriate discipline. I believe the ripple effect of these personal matters is what has brought about the economic crisis our county continues to experience. The answer, in my opinion, is not about taxes, immigration or medicare. My three decades of experience in the legal world says the answer is about making positive changes in our personal lives and families before we can expect to make any progress with other concerns. My recommendation: take heed from Secretariat. The 1973 Triple Crown Champion horse named Secretariat won by a surreal 31 lengths ahead of the next closest horse, considered an unprecedented win that has yet to be surpassed in the history of horse racing. As the details of Secretariat’s training reveal, remarkable success of all kinds should be available to all who maintain one consistent mindset—to harness positive

energy and commit to a positive attitude in every aspect of life. Secretariat’s owner was a housewife in a male dominated sport, with a stream of naysayers, since the young Secretariat was awkward and considered too heavy for a sport whose winners had pencil thin legs. The owner trusted her gut instincts to belie decades of tradition in the horse industry when allowing Secretariat to run hard to train for the last race instead of rest. Secretariat’s explosion of energy exuded the unmistakable positive force of the owner’s determination to win. This ultimately brought the owner seventyfive million dollars in stud fees over Secretariat’s lifetime! In the three decades of my law practice, I routinely met with prospective clients who were suffering either emotionally or physically, and making poor decisions about critical matters, largely resulting from stress. Author Carolyn Myss, Ph.D., writes that our attitudes have the power to deplete the body of energy and weaken our overall health, or to revive us with balance between body and mind and the ability to shed destructive habits. Choosing the positive, she says, can provide us with healthy selves and families, so that everything else falls in place. Bullying is Preventable

S h e r i f f Repor t

By Sheriff Al Lamberti

As the 2012/2013 school year begins, it is important for parents to be aware of the Broward County School District’s strict AntiBullying Policy. The policy prohibits bullying of, or by, any district student or employee. Since knowledge is power, it is vital that parents become familiar with the policy, which is sent home with every Broward County student the first week of school for parental and student review. Bullying among children is aggressive behavior that is intentional and involves an imbalance of power or strength. A child who is being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Usually, bullying is repeated over time. Bullying can take many forms such as physical, verbal, emotional and cyber-bullying. There are signs you can look for to know if your child is being bullied: 1. Torn clothes 2. Loss of appetite 3. Mood changes 4. Reluctance to go to school 5. Bruises or injuries that can’t be explained. If you suspect your child is being bullied, it is important to talk with your child, be supportive and gather information about the bullying. All suspected bullying should be reported to your child’s school. You can also make an anonymous report by calling the district’s emergency hotline at 754.321.0911 or by visiting www.browardschools.com. Face-to-face bullying isn’t the only way children can be victimized. Many children and young adults are using their computers and cell phones to send or post texts or images intended to hurt or embarrass their classmates. This includes sending mean, vulgar or threatening messages and images, posting 58

sensitive or private information about another person, or pretending to be someone else in order to make that person look bad. Children and teens can cyber-bully each other through e-mails, instant messaging, text messages, web pages, blogs or chat rooms. If your child is a victim of such bullying: 1. Encourage your child not to respond to cyberbullying 2. Do not erase the messages or pictures (save these as evidence) 3. Try to identify the individual doing the cyberbullying 4. Consider filing a complaint with your service provider to block the sender 5. Contact your child’s school 6. Contact law enforcement if cyber-bullying involves acts such as threats of violence, extortion, obscene or harassing phone calls or text messages, stalking, hate crimes or child pornography. I encourage all parents to talk to their children about what it means to hurt another person physically or verbally. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is working with the Broward County School B oard on an educational curriculum called ThinkB4UPost to be launched during Red Ribbon Week in October. This is a direct message from school officials and law enforcement to children and young adults about the consequences of cyber-bullying. For more information about ways to prevent and identify bullying, please visit www.sheriff.org/antibullying. With the help and guidance of law enforcement, parents, caregivers and teachers, I am confident we can put an end to bullying! ◆

Male-Pattern Baldness

By Melanie S. Hecker, MD, MBA

Mild to moderate male pattern hair loss affects about 50% of men by age 50. Baldness in men is a physiologic reaction induced my androgens (male hormones) in genetically predisposed men. The mode of inheritance does not follow a predictable pattern, so a person is not necessarily destined to go bald just because their father or grandfather was bald. Male-pattern balding specifically refers to recession of hair first in the front above the temples, often accompanied by hair loss in the central part of the frontal hairline. As this progresses, density of hair is then lost at the top of the scalp. Patients who begin balding at an early age are most distressed and are tempted to consult nonphysician “experts” at hair clinics. These clinics offer a variety of topical preparations, none of which has any value whatsoever. Patients who seek advice for hair loss should be warned not to become involved in these long-term and expensive programs. Selected patients may be referred for hair transplants, plastic surgical rotation flaps, or even wigs or weaves. Currently, there are only 2 FDA-approved medical treatments for male-pattern baldness: Minoxidil (brand-name Rogaine) and Finasteride (brand-name Propecia). Topical minoxidil was approved for the treatment of male-pattern baldness in 1988. A month’s supply of the 2% or 5% solution comes with a dropper applicator. The medication is applied to a dry scalp twice a day. The hair should not be wet for at least an hour afterward. Ideal candidates are men under 30 who have been losing hair for less than five years. About one third of these patients grow hair that is long enough to be cut or combed. Minoxidil works best on hair loss on the top of the scalp. Hair growth is evident in 8 to 12 months. The solution

What’s Hot, What’s Not! By Millie Walsh

Pardon me for this dejà vu moment. I’m sitting on a king size bed with its white down comforter covered in line sheets and color swatches, planning the next day’s show. Another season, another buying trip. Vegas is always a whirlwind trip with seven shows in four days. Do the colors, styles and sizes I have chosen thus far fill my customers needs? The holidays are coming, do I have enough special items in my November and December buys? Have I bought on trend without being too trendy? No matter how many articles I read or fashion shows I watch, clothing tradeshows are my barometer for what’s hot and what’s not. It never fails to amaze me that the trending styles and color stories repeat themselves throughout the different designers’ lines and the various shows. It’s like the designers all get together for coffee and decide what to focus on season by season. In reality fashion trends for a season start about two years prior with color forecasters deciding on color palettes and consumer trends. From there we look to the most prominent fashion weeks held in New York City, London, Milan and Paris to set the trends. What is seen on the runway is often far from what we will find in the stores, but it is the inspiration for the vast array of designers to produce their lines.

What’s hot? Denim—Prior changes in denim have been more about skinny vs. flare and low-rise vs. high-rise, but this year has brought about many changes. Spring and Summer 2012 brought us color. This fall, denim may not even look like denim with the patterns and waxing that is being shown in every line. The trend is still a slimmer silhouette with straight legs and skinnys in colors, lace and animal prints, and many different types of wax treatments. Giving an almost leather appearance, waxing is a fun new approach for denim. And don’t throw out those distressed jeans as holes are back in, or have they really ever left? 60

must be used continually to preserve growth. Minoxidil may stop or retard the progression of male-pattern baldness. Adverse effects are limited to local intolerance in a few patients and allergic reactions to minoxidil and the vehicle used. Finasteride is the first and only FDA-approved oral medication for the treatment of male-pattern baldness. Unlike minoxidil, which is sold over-the-counter, finasteride is available only by prescription. It works by blocking the formation of an androgen called DHT that is found in increased levels in a balding scalp. Taking one pill a day for 6-12 months has been shown to increase hair growth both at the top of the scalp and the mid-scalp region. Studies have shown that around 90% of men who take finasteride will stop losing more hair, and around 65% of men will show new hair growth. The drug is most effective in men between the ages of 18 and 41 with mild to moderate hair loss. Like all prescription products, finasteride may cause side effects. In clinical studies, a very small number of men experienced certain side effects, such as less desire for sex or erectile dysfunction. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men. These side effects were reversible and went away in men who stopped taking finasteride. They also disappeared in most men (58%) who continued taking finasteride. ◆

Tops—Full and sheer about covers it when it comes to tops. They are billowy and printed from polyester to silks, the full look of the tops balance out the skinny bottoms. Think garden party, with feminine floral prints on sheer fabrics. Dresses are back big time this winter. Not the sundresses and maxi’s we all loved this summer, but the structured shirt dresses and wrap dresses in geometric and floral prints. They are perfect for work and with a switch of your shoe can also work for a night on the town.

What’s not? Oversized tunics—I know I just discussed full tops, but I’m talking the really big tops you can get lost in. The kind of top that leave people wondering, “Is she pregnant?” But don’t fret if you have some of them hanging in your closet, just try cinching in the waist with a stretchy belt. That is a really cute look with a skinny jean. Elephant Pants—Those really wide leg pants that only a few body types can pull off. Interested in salvaging a pair? Try tapering in the leg into a flare, it’s an easy alteration. Wow, I have only just started and I’m maxed out on space, I guess I’ll just have to leave you wanting more … until next month. ◆ I’ll be answering your questions and sharing fashion news and tips each month in the Lighthouse Point Magazine’s Fashion Blog, a print version of my Web Log. Be Aware: October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Identity Theft By Denise Richardson

Each and every one of us needs to do our part to make sure that our online lives are kept safe and secure. That’s what National Cyber Security Awareness Month—is all about! Everything you do online has the potential to affect everyone – at home, at work and around the world. Before you post any piece of personal information online, ask yourself if you would broadcast that information to a stranger. Would you show a man on the subway a picture of your new house? Would you give the teenager working at the movie theater directions to your housewarming party? And would you let the woman at the coffee shop know you are about to take your vacation? If you are not comfortable sharing your personal information with strangers, don't share that information online. Practice some of these basic online safety habits to help keep the web a safer place for everyone:

Ways to Prevent Cybercrime Many cybercrimes start with malware. Criminals use malware to steal personal information and commit fraud. Avoid malware with these tips offered by the National Cyber Security Alliance; • Keep a clean machine: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats. • Automate software updates: Many software programs will automatically connect and update to defend against known risks. Turn on automatic updates if that’s an available option. • Protect all devices that connect to the Internet: Along with computers, smart phones, gaming systems, and other webenabled devices also need protection from viruses and malware. • Plug & scan: “USBs” and other external devices can be infected by viruses and malware. Use your security software to scan them. • Protect your $$: When banking and shopping, check to be sure the sites is security enabled. Look for web addresses with “https://” or “shttp://”, which means the site takes extra measures to help secure your information. “Http://” is not secure. • Back it up: Protect your valuable work, music, photos, and other digital information by making an electronic copy and storing it safely.

In Cases of Identity Theft: • Make sure you change your passwords for all online accounts. When changing your password, make it long and strong, with a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. You also may need to contact your bank and other financial institutions to freeze your accounts so that the offender is not able to access your financial resources. • Close any unauthorized or compromised credit or charge accounts. Cancel each credit and charge card. Get new cards with new account numbers. • File a report with your local law enforcement agency. Even if your local police or sheriff’s department doesn’t have jurisdiction over the crime (a common occurrence for online 66

Lighthouse Point Magazine | www.lhpmag.com

crime which may originate in another jurisdiction or even another country), you will need to provide a copy of the police report to your banks, creditors, other businesses, credit bureaus, and debt collectors. • If your personal information has been stolen through a corporate data breach (when a cyber-thief hacks into a large database of accounts to steal information, such as Social Security numbers, home addresses, and personal email addresses), you will likely be contacted by the business or agency whose data was compromised with additional instructions, as appropriate. You may also contact the organization’s IT security officer for more information. • If stolen money or identity is involved, contact one of the three credit bureaus to report the crime. Request that the credit bureau place a fraud alert on your credit report to prevent any further fraudulent activity (such as opening an account with your identification) from occurring. As soon as one of the bureaus issues a fraud alert, the other two bureaus are automatically notified. Equifax or call 1-800-525-6285 --Experian or call 1-888-397-3742 —TransUnion or call 1-800-680-7289 • Contact the Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Hotline at 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4388) and visit the Identity Theft section of the FTC website. In Cases of Social Security Fraud If you believe someone is using your social security number for employment purposes or to fraudulently receive Social Security benefits, you should: • Contact the Social Security Administration’s fraud hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or report the issue online. • Request a copy of your social security statement to verify its accuracy. Social networking sites have changed the way the world communicates. Facebook and Twitter make it easier than ever before to keep in touch with your loved ones around the world. Unfortunately, thieves and criminals are also reading your tweets and Facebook updates. If you don't want to become another robbery statistic, keep your personal information off the Internet. Don't reveal your vacation plans, or your daily schedule. Resist bragging about your new television or gaming system. Posting pictures of your home and latest purchases—tend to make thieves envious. Don't give digital criminals a reason to break into your home. StaySafeOnline.org, home of the National Cyber Security Alliance and one of the principal organizers of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, offers a wealth of tips and resources for children, parents and anyone else who spends time online. Though October is designated as cyber security awareness month, cyber security is something that must be taken seriously every month—and every day—of the year. ◆

Wicked Wahoo Whacker

Build Your Own Hi-Speed Lures By Capt. Mike Genoun

Dedicated anglers have been fooling wahoo for a few months now and the Bahamas’ bite is about to explode! But don’t lose hope if you haven’t yet gotten in on the game. The bite is still feverish and with a break in the weather, you too, will be able to capitalize on the line-sizzling action. If you purchase pre-rigged wahoo lures you are well aware of their high price tags, but with only a few basic tools and materials you can create your own custom high speed wahoo lures that with a little love; will fool fish for a lifetime. So what makes a good wahoo lure? Hi-speed fanatics agree that lures must track straight and true and offer enough flash and bulk for a wicked wahoo to see it race by at over 14 knots. As in all aspects of sport fishing, innovative anglers come up with custom creations and the results are some truly effective enticements. Here’s our wahoo killer proven effective locally and abroad. While this is a starting point if you’ve never attempted to assemble your own lure, don’t be afraid to experiment and implement your own ideas. While catching wahoo is downright exhilarating, it’s even more fulfilling when you fool such a brilliant predator on an offering built with your own two hands. Starting at what matters most, you’ll want to select premium grade stainless steel hooks. High speed wahoo trolling is not release fishing. I prefer 11/0 J-hooks from Mustad, but other quality brands will certainly get the job done. Locally, RJ Boyle Studios, Custom Rod & Reel and Chaos can hook you up. If you don’t choose quality stainless steel, your hooks will ultimately show signs of rust and begin to deteriorate. This is a lure that will potentially catch fish for years so you’ll want to make sure it is up to the task. From here we are going to build an in-line double hook stiff rig with 900 lb. multi-strand cable. Because wahoo strike from behind at incredible speed, in-line hooks are more effective than offset hooks and result in better connections. They also offer better tracking at hi-speed, with the trailing hook acting as a keel. Start by inserting a 12-inch section of cable through the hook eye. Make one wrap around the hook’s shank and pass the tag through the hook eye again although go in the opposite direction this time. Draw tight and crimp with the appropriate copper or nickel-plated sleeve. Before you can crimp the lead hook you need to slide a 3-inch section of heat shrink over the trailing hook’s crimped connection. From here take a marker and note where you want your first hook to rest. Once you’ve crimped the sleeve, double the hook back so it rests in line with the trailing hook. Add another section of heat shrink and your stiff rig is complete. It’s time to attach your leader, and we prefer multi-strand cable over traditional single-strand wire. It’s more durable and we don’t have to worry about re-rigging after a fish or losing the lure due to a kink in the wire. In the blue water realm where wahoo hunt steep pinnacles and ledges, small game like houndfish, juvenile dolphin and tuna must always be on the lookout as they are favored menu items for patrolling wahoo. Because of this you’ll want to fish big baits…you know the old adage.

To create a lure with a large, streamlined profile we’re going to utilize a trolling lure and two rubber skirts and while we’re confident with Iland Lures in our spread, any bullet-style head design will do the trick. In addition to lure selection, color is all about personal preference and likely influenced by previous experiences. However, if you put in your time you know that these speed demons are so aggressive that they will sometimes strike the trolling lead. This proves that wahoo aren’t as selective as one would think and that they will likely ravage whatever is properly presented. To add some weight to the lure we like to start with a 4 oz. Ilander heavy weight. You’ll also need an 8 oz. egg sinker to add even more weight to the lure. Start by inserting the sinker into one of the skirts. When inserting lead into the head of a skirt Pledge or Windex can be used to help lubricate. Once the sinker is inside the skirt take the second skirt and wrap it over the first one. Now simply slide the skirts and Ilander over the leader and you are ready to fish! While this lure is heavy enough to fish on its own, you’ll still want to run it behind a 36 oz. trolling lead. It’s important to note that you are not trying to fish lures deep below the surface, rather trolling leads keep your lures from skipping out of the water at such high speeds. It’s all about presenting properly tracking lures at breakneck speeds, so hammer the throttles and dust off the bentbutts because slob wahoo are waiting at your favorite ledge. ◆

Hurricane Dinner at the Eustons By Jon Frangipane

On a Friday night, as Hurricane Isaac began to storm down on us, a great time was had viewing photos and videos of Pam and Don Euston’s recent exciting trip to Tanzania and the Serengeti. A perfect dinner and fine wine were served, along with friendly, warm conversation; a perfect remedy in ignoring whatever type of weather may begin pounding us in the following 24 hours. I particularly enjoyed the amazing collection of items from all over the world that decorate the walls and shelves; so impressing that we will be writing a feature story on these spectacular finds. Happy to report that Pam and Don will continue to send their personal travelogues to Lighthouse Point Magazine.

Giving-in to Goodness

This article is dedicated to Tyler who did live every day to its fullest By Reverend Jack Noble

Not long ago I found myself in one of those seminars that crop up from time-to-time where learned people were talking about new scientific developments that are radically changing the world. A specialist in communications was talking about our great and mysterious wireless connectedness. A physicist was discussing the potential of lasers in medicine. The recital of our race’s genius seemed to be endless – how great, hidden potentials are being uncovered daily. The list went on and on. Yet, not once did anyone mention the problem of unlocking the latent power within each of us. Yet, surely that is the greatest challenge of all. Vast untapped sources of energy exist within each and every one of us. Now and then, on occasion – by luck, or chance, or providence – we make contact with one of those mysterious reservoirs. And when we do, we feel such a sense of confidence and creativity, of well-being, as not to be believed. Then abruptly, some unseen circuit is broken, and we return to our humdrum existence. There are a few, however, for whom the circuit seems always to be open – permanently. They seem to be more alive, vital, dynamic, and productive than the rest of us. They seldom grow weary, are almost never discouraged, and have seemingly discovered the secret of self-renewal. I wonder. It seems that this “self-renewal” is what religious faith is all about, isn’t it? I mean we are talking about psychic energy – the strength to cope with problems. I like to think of it in terms of giving-in to goodness. And I don’t necessarily mean self-sacrifice. I mean the deliberate action that has a positive impact (great or small) on the world around us; helping someone in need, righting a wrong, forgiving an enemy. To act in a way that can’t possibly

benefit you or me, but can benefit someone else. I mean we live in a beneficent universe (O to be sure, there are harsh acts of nature, and all the other things that happen). But the universe—this place we call home—is good. (Read Genesis One, sometime.) Consequently, when we give into the goodness that is at the heart of things, we align ourselves with those forces that sustain the universe. Therefore, if we give in to goodness reasonably often, we won’t have to seek self-renewal. It will come. The second thing that occurs to me, about self-renewal is to fall in love? Oh, I don’t mean necessarily with a person (although that’s not a bad idea), but fall in love with life. Talk to someone who is truly passionate about something – I don’t know, it doesn’t matter – stamp collecting, baseball, their family…it doesn’t matter, but watch them “light up” when they talk about it. To care, to really care about something, is self-renewing. Sparks can begin to fly. But how do we do that? A psychiatrist friend of mine calls it “stepping out of your own shadow.” He means by that, that we should stop judging ourselves. We should stop focusing on our faults and shortcomings. And we should start giving ourselves credit now and then for the virtues we posses. He says, “you wouldn’t believe the number of people who come telling me they’re no good, that they are hopeless failures.” And then he says, “…sure we’ve made mistakes. Who hasn’t? But we need to stop beating ourselves about them. Let them go.” Three suggestions to self-renewal. ◆

The New Electric Cars By Al Siefert

Several months ago we applied to be the Broward County vendor to install the battery chargers for the Nissan Leaf. After a lengthy application process and some local training we were selected to install the chargers in homes of the new electric vehicle owners. The process involves a site visit to determine if the homeowner has enough available power to run the charger. Secondly, we determine the location for the charger and collect other information on the FP&L meter. Once we collect this information we enter it into a portal at their website and determine the cost for the installation. This information is passed on to the customer for approval. Once approved, we apply for permits, do the installation, get the inspection and familiarize the customer to the operation of the unit. After many questions from the customers, I took the Leaf for a demo ride. The car was futuristic with a new design instrument panel that included an indicator that showed how much power was left on a charge. It had a quiet ride with plenty of power and the air conditioner worked better than I expected. Most of the Nissan Leaf buyers to date are of above average income that only want to use the car to drive locally. We did have one customer buy his car because his family in California was all

buying the Prius and other energy efficient cars, and he felt compelled to do the same. In the last few months the car sales have dropped off, possibly because the gas prices have fallen a little, but now, gas prices seem to be rising again. The newspaper and magazines are reporting more charging stations are being installed at shopping malls, some drug stores and various other locations. I believe this infrastructure will need to be in place before the true electric cars will become popular. For example, in San Francisco and Philadelphia, a company announced it will offer its wall mount charging stations for free to residents and commercial host sites. This offer is part of an expansion of the EV charging stations , which is a public-private partnership with the Department of Energy. For now there seems to be more converted golf carts running around the neighborhoods. They are also battery powered, fun to drive and affordable to buy. ◆

BRING LAW & ORDER BACK TO WASHINGTON This essay, in any sense, is not written as a vilification or condemnation of all that America stands for, it’s simply a firm stand against all those who have turned their backs on the principals our forefathers have so eloquently provided for us in our Constitution. Our Congress and United States Supreme Court have been so blatantly guilty, it’s like a viral pandemic that has attacked our leaders, transforming themselves into uncaring, selfish and ruthless individuals who are attempting to destroy the very fabric that joins us together, and if not stopped will create an army of discontents large enough to cause a national rebellion. As high and mighty promoters of American democracy, America is failing because actions by Congress and the United States Supreme Court have skewed, misinterpreted and broken laws; laws that ALL Americans are expected respect and abide by. And as all nations witness this outrageous behavior and vicious infighting among our so-called leaders, the rest of the world could only be thinking that democracy MAY NOT be the answer for everyone, after all. Weak leaders make a weak country, and that’s why we are now, more than ever, the most vulnerable to attacks of terrorism. The American people know it, and the world knows it—and our enemies know it! Whomever may win the presidency of the United States, not only must he find common ground with the opposite party, but even more importantly find common ground with Americans from all walks of life. ❖ ❖ ❖ Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling: "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC. "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election. The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure. 1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office. 2. Congress (past, present and future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

Congressional Reform Act Of 2012

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do. 4. Congress will no longer vote pay raises for themselves. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%. 5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people. 6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people. 7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen and Congresswomen are void effective 12/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with them. Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work!

DOWNSIZE CONGRESS!

This message is directed to Republicans & Democrats alike. 1. Reduce the House of Representatives from the current 435 members to 218 members. 2. Reduce Senate members from 100 to 50 (one per State). Then, reduce their remaining staff by 25%. 3. Accomplish this over the next 8 years (two steps/two elec-

Some Necessary Changes Would Include:

tions) and, of course, this would require some redistricting.

1. $44,108,400 for elimination of base pay for congress (267 members X $165,200 pay/member per year). 2. $437,100,000 for elimination of their staff (Estimate $1.3 Million per member of the House, and $3 Million per each member of the Senate every year). 3. $108,350,000 for the reduction in remaining staff by 25%. 4. $7,500,000,000 reduction in pork barrel earmarks each year (Those members whose jobs are gone. Current estimates for total government pork earmarks are at $15 Billion per year). 5. The remaining representatives would need to work smarter and improve inefficiencies. It would even be in their best interests to work together for the good of our country. 6. Smaller committees could lead to a more efficient resolution of issues. It would also be easier to keep track of what your representative is doing. 7. If Congresspersons were required to serve 20, 25 or 30 years (like everyone else) in order to collect retirement benefits, taxpayers could save a bundle. Now they get full retirement after serving only one term. 8. Congress should no longer get automatic pay raises.
