“Sometimes the house of the future is better built, lighter and larger than all the houses of the past, so that the image of the dream house is opposed to that of the childhood home. Late in life, with indomitable courage, we continue to say that we are going to do what we have not yet done: we are going to build a house. This dream house may be merely a dream of ownership, the embodiment of everything that is considered convenient, comfortable, healthy, sound, desirable, by other people. It must therefore satisfy both pride and reason, two irreconcilable terms.” - Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

“Depth is this phenomenon of experiencing the going together of what should otherwise be incompossible.” - Maurice Merleau-Ponty

“Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent..” - Ludwig Wittgenstein

Istanbul>

01 JEGI-DONG PARKING LOT RENOVATION TEA HOUSE - MULTI TEA CULTURE COMPLEX [2020] Graduation Thesis Project 2019. 12 - 2020. 06. 04

Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul 271-50

The river section of the downtown area from the Han River to Cheonggaecheon was completed through open rehabilitation and maintenance projects. And along the river, there are many facilities that are becoming obsolete as time goes by, such as parking lots that are sticking to the river and the space under the overpass. The same applies to the Jeongneungcheon covered parking lot in Jegi-dong. In 1992, the Midopa Department Store and Dongdaemun-gu Office started the business under the condition of accepting donations, and now it has become a hotbed for illegal delivery business. Due to the appeal of local residents who suffered from problems including the entry of a truck, an agenda was proposed to the Seoul City Council in 2013, and a petition was submitted to restore the parking lot to its original place and return it to the residents' cultural space. In addition, it is a facility safety class C class space, and renovation is indispensable. Commercial spaces, including parking facilities, are already being created in local cities, and attached parking lots may be changed to other spaces through repurposed use. In addition, discussions on vertical or horizontal extension in infrastructure already have issues such as passing bills related to public housing and three-dimensional pedestrian paths on bus garages in Jangji and Gangil Gumpact City. It seems to be an inevitable decision in Korea, where infrastructure facilities such as roads were first established before the city of Seoul was established. The spatial sensibility of this parking lot is quite different from other parking lots. It is a place where a river whose water level varies by season flows next to a circular colonnade space that extends for about 300 meters and is covered with fine sand like a sandy beach. It is a space that seems to have separated a part of the old Han River. Structural tectonics are also fun. H-beams are orthogonal to the circular columns and are fixed with bolts, and a concrete floor is gently raised on them. The structure can be easily changed by disassembling and it is easy to reinforce. I saw the possibilities of this space. This extraordinarily long colonial space, which is difficult to find in modern Korea, has been renovated to create a space like a traditional Korean 'nujeong' that local residents can use as a common space while enjoying the waterfront space. Gyeongdong Market and Yangnyeong Market are located nearby. By using the character of a space called 'nugak' which completes the spatial sequence of Byeongsan Seowon, it is made into a gateway through the market, making it an urban faรงade. Tea factories and tea houses that can be used to produce and consume tea in large quantities will be built, creating an extension of the Yangnyeong market. Tea culture is a program that has the potential to be associated with the behavior in the 'nugak' space that has been handed down since the Goryeo Dynasty. It is planned to create a good 'nujeong' that can play a role as a public good, not just filling this space with commercial facilities such as cafes that can only be occupied by consumption.

7

8

The atmosphere of the parking facility here is not simply created by the parking lot itself. The overpass, Jeongneungcheon, the stones next to Jeongneungcheon, and columns on the sandy beach which is reminiscent of the old Han River complete the atmosphere. The structure of the parking lot was in the form of a concrete top plate on a simple steel structure, but the shape of the column itself, the pattern of materials, and the repetition of h-beams created a strange atmosphere. In conclusion, the concrete top plate is removed, the h beam is replaced, and the columns are reinforced to proceed with renovation. The key was to connect the submarine space and the landscape plan of Jeongneungcheon.

Concrete plate - H beam

H beam - H beam

H beam - Pillar

9

10

Overpass, Jeongneungcheon, Park.. whole landscape can penetrate this structure. Weird harmoney between Weeping willow and the tight - h beam structure shows drastic contrast. Korean traditional Pavilion <JungJa> was the key and inspiration on this project. In <CHOSUN> dynasty, people gather in this place and enjoyed to drink, wirte poetry. So that means, it can be well connected with the <Tea House>.

11

12

Hotel mass is covered with orange terracota. Each of the part has different sensation which defined by material, shape, or faรงade. Imagine a hotel room that it shows the river and park, also the whole landscape including weeping willow. It's quite dramatic contrast if the passenger walk along the riverside. Weeping willow has its own characteristics that its branch falls to the ground so easily. But the mass behind is straight vertical, and horizontal line.

13

14

At the end of the mass on the north side, there is a sauna mass. The finish material was aluminium pannel by dry process. You can check the entire structure of the sauna mass later but i twisted a little bit from the general sauna. There is a stair that goes down to the Jeongneungcheon level. And people can enjoy their time looking the trees and shrubs. The condition of this site is not that romantic nor clean. But i'm sure that if i make the whole site as a landscape not as a single facility, people will gather.

15

This is elevation Image from the overpass view. Creating a nice landscape with lifted waliking path, people can enjoy the new Jeongneungcheon park. Also this facility will play a role as a 'urban faรงade' which has to be entered to get to the Gyeongdong Yangnyeong Market (Korean traditional oriental medicine).

16

You can see the separated mass, and there are 4 types of it ; Cafe (Tea house), Tea museum, Hotel, Sauna. It came from the idea that in Chosun Dynasty, there were <Jungja> which is the place where people gather togather and enjoy food and drink.

17

The other side section. See the loby and gallery, f&b court, and bar in the hotel mass. I also tried to focus on how to get the light into the Jeongneungcheon level from the roof top. I just made a big open at the top. The overpass and this structure combines with weird atmosphere. It's a PILLAR - PILLAR sequence.

18

The Miju apartment is right next to this facility. I imagine some kind of public cafe where the local people come by, and enjoy talk with neighbors or their family. This is not only for the tourists but also become a nice resting place to visit by the locals.

you can barely see the mass or columns. Also, the river is quite variable that in summer time, the water level goes high up to the ground level so that almost 70% of the basement level is unindated with water. So the entire basement level goes down only 3-4m. I set the two main program which are the hotel and Tea house.

The logic of the interior follows the existing H beams which were used as a main structure of the parking lot. I thought that if i just add some interior material suchas wood or tile, i can make the other space be carved.

This is the completed axonometric image of this project. 'Nuangak' or'Nujeong' is generally regarded as a single independent small facility. In this graduation design, I tried to solve the physical characteristics of this long public parking facility and the' independent' form of the pavilion. Since it is a structure facing the river in the first place, the result of trying to create as many empty voids as possible between them naturally created four types of images of a leak. In addition, the connection between east and west clearly divided by the boundary of Jeongneungcheon must be connected visually as well as physical connection to preserve the gaze toward the river environment.

26

27

Let's see the inside. As i mentioned before, i didn't put some exaggerated program diagram or circulation diagram. The space itself can only be shown by the section perspective. Yet, this image is also just a 'image' itself, but as long as it is just a 'plan', not a real world construction, expression is the most necessary. As it shows, it can be splitted into 2 parts ; The semi-basement, and upper level. This part is tea house and museum. How to get the sunlight into the underground park was my top priority on this project. Also, wanna use the existing H beam which turns into some chairs that the guests of tea house can use it. As a result, the tea house has become a <idleness space>.

28

Vertical section to the overpass. This is the museum mass which people can walk up to the rooftop level while looking at the various tea leaf putted in the boxes which are hanged on the wall. You can see the park at the basement level. There are sand, rock, and river. I just set some shrubs and willow trees and lifted footpath. The east side of the mass where faced with road was also important. The way i design that side will deternine the characteristic of this mass. I setted some benches so that pedestrian can sit by or get into this tea house.

31

This image shows the middle of the facility. You can see the big bridge on the middle which connects the east and wetside of the Jeongneungcheon. Based on that bridge, the mass on the left is the tea culture complex cultural center, and the mass on the right is used as a hotel. And under this mass, there is lifted footpath which can be operated as a part of the park. It penetrates the shroubs, willow trees, and pillars. On the basement level, there will be an outdoor exhibition for sculptures.

32

33

And now is the hotel mass. The 1st floor is f&b and hotel loby. 2nd floor is a gallery for the guests of hotel. And basement is the bar, food court for guests of hotel but also people from the outside. The open hole of the roof was very important for the sunlight into basement level. I wanted a dramatic light into this space, so that a little bit heavy-mood sculpture like Giacometti would be perfectly fitted into this place.

Vertical section to the overpass. This is the hotel mass. During the final critic of this project, there were some architects that wonder whether this hotel might be work or not among the customers because of the overpass and site circumstances. This place is not that impressive nor clean or cozy. But i think, the most important thing about this site is the natural environment. River, sand, and park - these three combination among the modern city is hard to find nowadays. I'm sure that if the landscape will be setted (rocks and shroubs, willow trees), there must be customers who are willingly pay to stay in this facility.

37

Spa. Imagined some really special place to get into. The roof of this mass is used for the light comes in, but also a small island where the people get in there and look up to the sky. The height is about 2.5~5m so that the walls cut the rest of the urban landscape, and only shows the sky. The spa level is quite dynamic that it has 4 different levels. The normal spa tiles and dark roof will be sensed as a sentimental spa facility. You can check the various level of this spa on the next page.

02 Appropriate Architecture for YOUNG PEOPLE'S HOUSING [2019] Junglim Foundation student award Project 2018. 12 - 2019. 03

20 Marlow 11-gil, Dobong-gu, Seoul Chang-dong 1-10

2020 Junglim Student Award's title was 'Appropriate Architecture for Young People's Housing'. And the word 'Young' refers to the students who graduated and started their first career. So that means we have to consider the life style of age 30 to 35. (Specially in Korea) The chronic problem of housing in Korea (also the other country) is the problem of price. Almost every house in capital city is extremely high for the young people due to the problem of density, and speculation in real estate. Especially Korea is the hottest place for that. Deposit money for renting the house is one of the most weird law in this country. If we do not get rid of this policy, there is no hope for the young people buying or renting a house. So we focused on the 'POSSIBLE' and 'AFFORDABLE' site. Changdong Hanaro Mar has really special system that its land is splitted into 3 pieces. 2/3 of the land is Hanaro Mart's, and the other 1/3 of the ownership is to Seoul City. This kind of contract is called <Land Donation>. The mart had signed a contract in 1990s that they will give a small part of the land. But there was a problem that the value of the land is very quicksilver. So there was a legal dispute between the Nonghyup (Owner company of Hanaro Mart), and Seoul City. The Court ruled in favor of Nonghyup. So we setted up a hypothesis that what if the company run a public apartment with the City government, and split the profit with each other? The Seoul City just need to ease the regulation. The whole Seoul's land is so expensive that the city government cannot afford that. So the only way to make a public residence is to cooperate with the private enterprise. Next step was to consider 'What is necessary for the 30-35 youngsters?', 'How can we make some diffent architectural plan in a residencial building?' The main problem of the Apartment type building is the empty room. If there is no contractor to sign in, that space becomes dead space. And there are more increasing number of people who work in their own room. But at the same time, division between the working place, and residence is necessary. TYPE A : FOCUSSING ON THE FLUID USE OF RESIDECIAL ROOM TYPE B : FOCUSSING ON THE CO WORKING - RESIDENCE

Co - Working with Cho Ye Jin (University of Seoul)

45

46

The number one reason why we chose this site was absolutely clear. The 1/3 of the land was the Seoul city's ownership. And also, there is a specific social circumstances that the financial situation of korean big mart is now going worse. The portion of the small CVS is steadly increasing, but the big market is the opposite. So we decided to plan some kind of multi - using Housing for young people. We thought that it might be benefit if a small portion of the land is owned by government. So there is a hypothesis on this project that the company of the market and Seoul City have to collaborate for both benefit. At the beginning, we had to set the specific program that could be well adapted with housing. Problem was that the existing facility is still used for the big market for the citizen. Distruct it and just construct new structure seems so simple solution, and it seems like it cannot be accepted to anyone (Because the most portion of the land is now the company's). We had to connect this market with housing so that the company still can make the profit from the facility but also Seoul city can make social housing for young people. So many big market is now change their distribution channel. They are now making the existing market into the warehouse (but also function as a market) because of the decreasing number of people using the offline market. They have to change the strategy that they can get benefit from merging the market with warehouse. As a result, we set our strategy that we have to maintain the warehouse, but the company yeild some land to government so that the public housing can be constructed. Also, we planned to distribute the profit from the housing lent fee to both Seoul City and the market company. The most important renovation strategy is using the existing steel frame. As you can see the diagram above, we planned to stick some kind of aluminium pannel to the steel frame, and make some usable space. And those space will be used as a splitted urban park or cafe, and f&b facilities. We wanted to show this rough structure and make it still usable. With a industrial structure design, the warehouse and housing will be co-exist in Chang-dong, Seoul.

⑥ 1. Type A housing tower 2. Type B housing tower 3. Urban Farming R&D center 4. Outdoor Theatre 5. Warehouse elevator

This is the final arrangement plan through isometric image. First, the 3 main housing tower had been planed to set back from the big road, and between the Type A tower, there are two freight elevator which are using for the cargo shipping to basement level and ground level. As i mentioned, the market and housing tower have to be connected because of both the market company's profit and the public housing for young people. Seoul city and the market company will run the urban farming research center together. And the main point of this project is that the farm will be passed down to the residents. They can grow their own ingredients. And it can be sold through the warehouse. Residents, government, market can take benefit together.

The cargo must be easy to load - unload. Face the parking lot or main road directly so that it will be easier to deliver. There are 2 main tower in this plan. I imagined to make this elevator by some used steel which was a structure of the former market. This mechanical space will be directly face the other f&b facility, and urban park.

Isometric view

54

This is the section perspective of the cargo elevator and warehouse at the basement. I did not wanted to just paste some normal elevator. I thought that if i have to design a warehouse, then the elevator also has to be designed with a similar context of this project's design. As i mentioned, i wanted to make these programs to be well connected ; warehouse, Urban farming, Young people housing The company's name of this market is Nonghyup. This company is a main distributor of ingredients like rice, vegitable, and etc in Korea. So i thought that there might be a little possibility that if they have to change strategy of running market, it might be benefit to have a housing tower in their own land, and split the incomes of resident's rental fee. Seoul city cannot buy any land in Seoul because of its crazy real estate coast. They need to find another way to build public house. This is our solution. Combine the market, f&b facility, urban farming, and housing. The market will get constant profit because of the residents. Seoul city can solve a bit of short supply in housing problem for young people. Again, public house should be solved through cooperation with a company or private money. Most of the public house is in debts. LH corporation, SH corporation is typical main agent of the public house. They are all now in huge debt. We have to find another way. Another idea that can benefit both the governent and company. And this is chance. Small market of CVS, internet shopping, mobile application shopping is overwhelming in this business. Housing tower might be a strong catalyst to promote consuming life.

55

This is the section perspective of the cargo elevator and warehouse at the basement. I did not wanted to just paste some normal elevator. I thought that if i have to design a warehouse, then the elevator also has to be designed with a similar context of this project's design. As i mentioned, i wanted to make this place to

56

Now you can see some vegetables that grow on the steel plate roof. Also, on the ground level, there are some urban farming plant boxes. And also the warehouse on the basement level. The connection of housing tower and warehouse, urban farming is the main theme of this project, but i also wanted to make a park in this structure. The bench, and walkigng path are those. Daily life is now being taken by a photo and captured in the individual's social network. Each of the scene even looks like a pornography. They want to reveal their life. Wherever, whenever, whatever it is, they all take a picture, stuff it. In another meaning, this kind of space may looks like a department store. Some critics said that this is none sense that so many space is opened to outside. But i think that if i design this space into a inner space, it might be looks like a big department store or the other big - scale space. I don't want to do that. Through these used column steel structure, the 'urban park' can be differently shown to the public. As conclusion, this masterplan is quite complex. So many programs get mixtured together, but there is a common characteristics ; plant. Urban farming, ingredients warehouse, urban park will operate together, gathering the local community. Also there is a <Platform Chang-dong 61>. It's a local cultural facility made of container. There holds a periodic concert every year. Those two facility have possibility of gathering people from outside of the local area.

57

This facility was a temporary structure for a big market. So i chosed to remain the pillar (H beam). And on that H beam, i added some steel plate so that it become a partition and make space. This will be used for a urban park.

58

There goes subway #4. Through the nearby station, people can easily access to this place. Among this urban park, there are several f&b facilities. Because of the lack of the public space among Seoul, people have to buy some drinks to stay inside. This place will provide a public space where everyone can access free.

59

The sunrise will be catched on the outside of the west. The residents of the apartment can take a walk among this urban park, and some elderly people will come out early in the morning to grow their own vegetables on their urban farming land.

60

The use of the remained H beam is the main theme of this project. I considered to use it as a new element of a space for park and the other exterior space. I don't want to make this place to become like a department store. To accomplish that, i decided to make this whole place to be an external space except for f&b facilities.

61

Now you can see the coffee shop, and some furnitures inside. The roof side structure is roughly revealed. If the visitors walk along the urban park, they can easily find this kind of place to take a rest. All the corridor and f&b facilities combine together in various levels.

62

The bench details will connect to the handrail of this urban park's corridor. I disperse these benches so that people can sit everywhere nearby. They don't need to buy some coffee or food to get a sit. This is a place that all the people can enjoy.

03 DONGDAEMUN LIBRARY RENOVATION - Deep dark Bibliothèque [2019] University of Seoul 4th grade Project 2019. 03 - 2019. 06

22 Cheonho-daero 4-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul Sinseol-dong 109-4

"A house that has a library in it has a soul" - Platon "I have always imagined that PARADISE will be kind of library." - Jorge Luis Borges "I've made it as a gift to the area, something that will brighten up someone's day." - Rachel Whiteread

What is a library? A big space that contains lots of books? So many library all over the world are now being changing their formation. It's not just about the space that contains some books, but beyond a public space. As a result, libraries of these days are hard to figure out that some of them look like those're not true library. So noisy, and even the visitors do not enter the library to read books. They just want to spend their time with people, not the books. On the table, there are a cup of coffee, and a book. Those will be stuffed into the social network. The library is no more a pure library anymore. I wanted to get back to the essence. The fourth industrial revolution, e-book, data center... those are not my concern. I believe the paper's power. Reading page by page, i can feel the scent, the atmosphere, and hear the sound. It's still valid in this chaotic times. Let's make a dark, heavy, deep space. So deep that a small sound can be heard easily. Be quite. This is a bibliothèque.

65

66

A dongdaemun library has a unique shape. Becuase of the shape of the parcel, the library also has a triangular plan. Inside of this place, it's quite normal. There are Korean Horse Affairs Association and Seoul Folk Flea Market. So if you visit this place in the weekend, you can see the streets be crowded with people. So i thought that this library should be more heavy and block the noise from the outside. But the main reason was not by the circumstance of this site. Actually, i didn't care about the environment of this place or urban diagnosis. I don't believe it. I mainly focused on the tectonics. The most important physical feature of the Dongdaemun Library is the'triangle plane', but I thought it was the parapet detail of the railing protruding from the outside. Currently, access to the outside is controlled, so reinterpreting the outside terrace was a major theme of the renovation. And the big direction was not to keep the terrace outside, but to fill it with clogged masses. British installation artist Rachel Whiteread's work, The House, was first explored in northern and eastern London to be demolished. It is a building made by casting the entire Victorian-style house out of concrete. The work of replacing usable spaces with'dead spaces' in an instant and the process of intentionally creating a porch in the building was impressive. There was no unnecessary debate about whether the work of creating a huge mass with the professor was meaningful or meaningless. There was no need to preserve the entire terrace intact, but rather boldly eliminated the usable space and wanted to make the space itself a narrow and quiet space. The original function and character of the'library' that I think is a space that focuses solely on the act of reading books in a darker, narrower, and quieter atmosphere. I thought that both the <Byeolmadang Library> of Samsung Station COEX and the <Seoul Library> of the Seoul City Hall were overgrown with publicity, and the identity of which it was not known whether it was a'library' or'a chattering space' became ambiguous. I thought I had to make it heavier and narrower. The bookcase, the wall, the floor and the ceiling are united, and light leaks out in a transparent library. The scene of reading a text with a small light in a corner of a dark space appears similarly in the film The Name of the Rose, originally from Umbert Echo. The idea was to recreate the atmosphere of the medieval fortress of knowledge.

67

Looking at Rachel Whiteread's work, I thought I could see the building in the concept of embossed and engraved stamps. I thought that the possibility of the empty exterior terrace of the Dongdaemun Library would be completed by filling it.

68

The north and south side of the building meet like the sides of a triangle. I wanted to express the texture of the north and south sides differently, centering on the sharp line where both sides meet.

69

Former Library

70

After renovation Library

SCALE

Focus on Tectonic. There was no urban analysis or program survey. Except for being 4M

8M

somewhat crowded on weekends due to the Pungmul Market and the Korean Horse Association, there were no significant inconveniences or elements that seemed to be missing or insufficient in this area. Therefore, I focused on how to approach the building itself and use it as an element of renovation. Through Rachel Whitelead of England, I saw the possibility that the building itself could be used as a formwork. Handrails and terraces located at the end of each side of the triangular plane caught my eye. The point is, I started to think about how to use this terrace to make the facade of the building, and how to reinterpret the existing library without introducing other programs. Eventually, it was decided to put a formwork on the terrace side, pour concrete to make a full porch, and insert a faรงade unit made of gfrc between the railings. Looking at this building from the east, you can see both sides of the triangle at the same time. In that view, you can see the face that is solidly filled with concrete and the facade shaped like teeth. The internal logic is that thick fiberglass concrete is poured around the point where the existing window is located and gradually stretched out.

71

Visitors are surrounded by light lingering in deep darkness. It is a storehouse of heavy knowledge. There are silhouettes of people searching for books behind the fiberglass concrete. It feels like I shouldn't do anything else. I feel like I have to walk around quietly looking at the book.

72

Some people sit on the floor and read a book, some stand up, and some sit astride. It is a rather unfriendly space. It is difficult to find books because the classification method is different from other libraries, but the search process itself is interesting, so it feels like swimming among books rather than coming to read them.

73

Compared to the solid south side, the north side has a tooth-like pattern of the gfrc facade. It is composed of a total of 6 types of facade units to form the face of the building in a certain pattern.

74

Through the faรงade, you can see the faces of people entering the library. This side preserves the existing library's terrace and uses the facade to make it a private space. The size of the window frame is kept almost the same, and a large door is made there for people to come and go.

75

Former Library

76

After renovation Library

This is a section cut from the north side. The bookshelf to store the internal books SCALE

is initially built along with the wall during the project construction. Instead, the height 4M

8M

of the bookshelf is made adjustable. Solidly filled surfaces are continuous from the third floor, except for the large open space between the first and second floors. The concrete facing the outside is gfrc and exposed concrete. I wanted to create a silhouette of the inner space using fiberglass concrete, which has not been used in Korea yet. I wanted to create an interior space where a little light penetrates by making two layers of fiberglass concrete and shooting lights in it. A space where the silhouettes of people and books on the other side flow out. I wanted to create a space where I could quietly concentrate on reading under such soft lighting. Sometimes, it's a space where you don't wander around this space looking for books, but move around the silhouette across the street. I wanted to express an intellectual swimming in the sea of knowledge in space. The experience in the library itself was considered more important than the space where books were homogeneously stacked in a large space. I was not interested in the book management system or the way the library was organized. I thought it could provide information through its own number of floors and maps. It is not that important.

77

People who came to read the books fell into the charm of fiberglass concrete, took pictures, and started to enjoy the space surrounded by books. I broke the prejudice that the library should be like a library. Why should be like a typical library? Isn't it a library that is much closer to the essence than these days when public spaces are getting bigger?

78

I want to be in a quiet place. Perhaps the library should be the only island-like space where you can escape from neon signs and enlarged public areas. The space itself needs to be changed rather than the boring connection of a library connected with a cafe. It has become a space where only books and me exist.

79

The south elevation is made of pine concrete. The location of the window was not arbitrarily determined, but the location where the existing Dongdaemun library window was located. The lines of gray concrete railings contrast with the color of the concrete filling the terrace.

80

There is a large window that allows you to guess the interior through the open facade in the middle. There are also wooden walls, not fiberglass concrete for fun and variable elements. This makes it possible to clearly distinguish between the existing building and the repaired part.

81

Former Library

82

After renovation Library

It is a section cut off the south side. The elevator and staircase core space was added. SCALE

The important point in the cross-sectional image is that the part that becomes the 4M

8M

Porsche becomes the bookshelf of the library at a certain depth, and it implies that the process of becoming a wall is repeated. And you can get information on where the difference in wall thickness occurs. There is no particular reason for the thickness of the walls on the far right. I think I feel the difference in recognizing the empty space when entering the interior only after passing through a space with that thickness. It is believed that'Porsche' is a concept that did not exist in Korea, but the detail of gongpo is also visible, but it is just a filling for decoration, so it can be said to be a Porsche in a different meaning. Of course, there would be no disagreement that both the gonpo structure and the Porsche in the East and West were closely related to the tectonic of space. In summary, there is no particular reason for the thickness of the Porsche itself. However, when the thickness of the wall itself, which can only be seen as a cross section, is made into a space that is actually reproduced, I think that the sense will surely be different. It will be clearly distinguished from revealing its own shape, such as columns and steel structures. It's okay to see it as arbitrary.

83

The internal and external composition composed of a common language becomes the framework of this library. Because it is a holy land of knowledge, it was completely different from the general large space and the space with a bookcase. This changed appearance of the Dongdaemun Library perceived by the local people will probably be imprinted due to the retained railing.

04 DONGDAEMUN PYUNGWHA MARKET RENOVATION - FASHION MUSEUM [2019] University of Seoul 3rd grade Project 2017. 03 - 2017. 06

274 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul 17-48 Euljiro 6-ga

There's a weird, long structure smack-dab in the middle of the dongdaemun-gu. In Korea history, the late 70s to 90s was a drastic growing period. After the Korean civil war, the refugees from north Korea made their living by selling the American's military unifrom, and the other clothes. PYUNGWHA market also has a agonizing history. A poor labor environment made a man to burn himself to death. This market is not only famous for its gloomy history but also a long structure. It blocks all the streets along the Chenggyechen. I focused on this phenomenon. To solve this, i cutted the middle of this structure, empty out the main plaza, and make it as a big exhibition hall. Also, the problem of this market is that only some young fashion designers visit there and no more young people go to buy some clothes. I wanted to make this place as a hot fashion exhibition. It's a linear type structure. So i thought that, 'What if i make a long corridor which is parallel to Cheonggyecheon?'. Fashion show could be held on this long corridor. Individual brand can exhibit their latest clothes among this corridor. I can make this whole structure as a fashion park. The middle plaza will become a public exhibition space that all the visitors can see the fashion show.

DDP FASHION MALL DONGDAEMUN DESIGN PLAZA MIGLIORE APM SHOPPING MALL GOODMORNIG CITY HYUNDAI CITY OUTLET

DOOTA MAXTYLE JEIL PYUNGWHA MARKET BELPOST

The brief change of Dongdaemun is as follows. Designers who resigned from conglomerates during the IMF financial crisis gradually changed the Dongdaemun fashion industry ecosystem. Due to the plunge in the exchange rate, Dongdaemun apparel prices have become much cheaper than before, attracting new customers. In particular, as foreign demand surged, various large companies such as DOOTA. DOOTA, Migliore, Hello APM, Ramodo, Good Morning City, Lotte Fitin, and Hyundai Premium Outlet were introduced and became the current Dongdaemun. It is not just the market where the peace market is completely dead. Also, among retailers, due to the growth of the online market, retailers are being pushed out, and in the case of wholesalers 1.'original wholesalers' that design and sell their own 2.'intermediate wholesalers' who sell original wholesalers' products to wholesalers '3. It is divided into'parallel companies' that combine original wholesalers and intermediate wholesalers. However, no matter how much wholesalers are, there is an atmosphere of being pushed out of the online market as well. In particular, places like Pyeonghwa Market have problems such as the aging of the building itself and the clothing sold inside it cannot follow the trend of young people. The solution was'extreme surgery'. The road leading through the Jeontaeil Bridge cuts this long building in half. I thought about making the point square and using it as an exhibition space and a runway space. In particular, this'runway' space was important. Pyeonghwa Market itself is not a typical building gesture. Incredibly long. It boasts a length of about 600m. I thought that the structural features of such a long building are what makes it the most important'runway' in a fashion show. I thought of a structure in which long passages were placed at both ends of the building to enter the space between these two passages. The empty exhibition space in the center has the potential to be used as a plaza. I imagined the scene where a broadcast camera and a flashy laser show were going on while the fashion show was going on. On days when the event is not in progress, people can freely move between north and south, or create a romantic view of Cheonggyecheon from the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The project had to be carried out so that it could function as a key building of fashion in the center of the dynamic Dongdaemun fashion cluster.

95

This huge exhibition space, which exists in the middle of the whole mass, is the core of this project. Brand new products are displayed in a glass box hanging in the air, and a mannequin will be displayed like it's dancing.

96

Designers and merchants will meet in this place. Fashion shows and performances will be held in this large space. The daily life of Pyeonghwa Market will different in the outside space which is surrounded by dynamic environment.

97

98

99

The middle part of the Pyeonghwa market was cut out and a fashion exhibition hall which is made up of several sectors was created. At the same time, I get rid of the mass at the north that needs to be refurbished. Instead of a building, I created a large park. Therefore, the bridge and the plaza could be connected naturally.

100

When crossing the Jeon Tae-il Bridge, there is an exhibition hall made obliquely to the Cheonggyecheon stream. It was also important to reorganize sidewalk blocks for each building and to clearly distinguish sidewalks from roadways.

101

This is the view from the other side of Jeon Tae-il Bridge. A space is inserted between several walls with functions. The streets between the south and the north, which were divided by the Pyungwha market mass, are now connected with the space between these divided walls.

102

The corridor space extending from east to west is parallel to the walking path along the Cheonggyecheon stream and becomes an extension. You can walk along the wellordered Cheonggyecheon waterfront and traverse this facility in the same manner.

103

104

It is a cross section of the most eastern mass. Several walls were installed at intervals, and then a space was created between them. The reason for this is that there was no space between the existing peace market and the masses in the back, so there was only the wholeness of the building. Therefore, through renovation, I thought that it would be possible to change the traffic of the building by revitalizing the alley behind Pyeonghwa Market. In that case, the existing transportation system, which Elevation Diagram

was inconvenient to walk due to the traffic of motorcycles, can be arranged to some extent. Because the store's own breath is open, it can accommodate more customers than the existing customer inflow. The reason for the lack of demand from the younger generation may be that the clothing sold by stores itself has not kept up with the trend, or it may be the accessibility itself. Therefore, it becomes more and more important to utilize the space behind the building. Induce pedestrians by modifying the landscape plan and pedestrian paths between properly separated buildings. Because of the corridor that runs in a direction parallel to Cheonggyecheon, people can easily check the movement of the building, and by moving up the floor, the complex urban structure of Dongdaemun can be easily read. In addition, the architectural device set up as a wall is divided into four types and used as a space for exhibiting clothes. It is also used as a display area for clothes from adjacent stores and may be used as a warehouse. The important point is that the clothes displayed on the wall are visible

Isometric Diagram

in both spaces centering on the wall, so there is also an effect of exhibition.

105

This is an interior view of a clothing brand store between the walls. Just focus on the installed doors and lights. In the simple space structure, the form of lighting and the structure of the door were very important factors.

106

Corridors directly connected to stores of different levels clearly show the entrance process of the entire facility. It would be nice to imagine tourists and visitors shopping while looking at the Cheonggyecheon stream.

107

108

The center of the Pyeonghwa Market was emptied and an exhibition space was created with a steel frame. The interior space is completely emptied, making it a space that can be used as a plaza. Since you can climb stairs around the square, there is also the possibility of performing a concert or performance. In addition, there is a possibility that it can be used as a runway for a fashion show because of the corridor Elevation Diagram

lying parallel to Cheonggyecheon. After all, it is a space of variability that can be used for multiple purposes. The pedestrian path and the plaza directly connected to the Jeon Tae-il Bridge face each other slightly obliquely. The reason for this plan is that it was decided that the intermediate location would be appropriate to accommodate the park space in the south and Jeon Tae-il Bridge at the same time. If it fits into the Jeon Tae-il Bridge, it is expected that it will not function as a plaza due to the building behind the Pyeonghwa Market. Therefore, it had to be located in the middle to form a square that is more open to the front of the park in the south while properly accommodating the Jeon Tae-il Bridge. The trees extending from the plaza were planned as elements of the landscape along with the building. Likewise, this building also showed a tendency to make the building itself look like a park. Now, you can go straight to the Jeon Tae-il Bridge, the new plaza, and the park area behind you. Narrow streets, messy alleys, and motorcycles put an end to the days

Isometric Diagram

when pedestrians were uncomfortable. Created a pleasant new peace market.

109

This is the scene of a fashion show that started at sunset. This is my personal favorite image. It is a somewhat collage-like image, but it is a picture that directly explains the overall atmosphere of this large exhibition space.

110

Cameramen and reporters are taking pictures of models walking on top of the landings located in the middle. This corridor space is a key to solving the movement of the entire mass. Also it is an architectural device that can define events that occur in this space. The entire corridor becomes a runway.

111

112

The western mass, which is almost symmetrical with the eastern mass, has one difference from the eastern mass in that it has no core and an interior space is formed. Assuming that the visitor's inflow passage will come from the east entrance, which is the main entrance to the Pyeonghwa Market, in fact the important thing in the western Elevation Diagram

mass was to introduce tourists from the east into the indoor space. The composition of the other interiors and spaces is the same. People from the northsouth sidewalk can be seen from the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the image will be like walking around a shopping street. However, it will be a vertically dynamic space composition rather than a uniform arcade structure in a row. If students in the previous fashion design department enjoyed visiting this place, now all fashion-related professionals can meet and chat here. It is a space where sellers, marketers, fashion design undergraduate students, wholesale and retailers mix together in a fashion show and fashion exhibition, rather than simply selling finished brand products. This is no longer an idealistic story. The sales space itself is also important. This is because there is an assumption that some of this building is demolished. However, if there is no drastic change, all of the sellers who entered the Pyeonghwa Market here are in danger of being annihilated together. Help keep sales in a better environment. It is a time when the agreement between Seoul City Hall staff

Isometric Diagram

and local people is urgent.

113

It is a commercial space that has not been occupied. This is an unleased space that no hangers or pos are installed. I wanted the plumbing facilities for exhaust and air supply to be exposed to the outside and make it looks like a heavy concrete object.

114

See a woman heading towards the end of the corridor. It makes possible to imagine the sequence of spaces facing along this horizontal corridor. A space is created and a compartment is created. It would be completely different from the existing Pyungwha market that was tightly closed from east, west, north and south.

05 PAVILION [2014] University of Seoul 2nd grade Project 2014. 09 - 2014. 12

Non-site project

Although it is a space with no purpose, it is said that the pavilion is a project that is sometimes given a purpose and an opportunity to express the pure architectural thinking of a specific architect. I learned the meaning of words like this, but I don't know if it was properly expressed. I wanted to learn more about bricks. I wanted to express the feelings that I can feel in a pavilion or pavilion in Korea that I cannot understand with bricks. Since I was taking a class in Western architecture, I was very interested in Tectonic. As I was organizing the data so far, it seems that I had been interested in the structure from the first grade, but I thought I would use bricks as structures a little differently. I am not sure about the feasibility. I don't know if the brick can withstand the weight of that aluminum iron pipe and the weight of a wooden roof (if not, make a structure that reinforces it properly), but the important thing was the regular three holes in the brick. I wondered if I wanted to fill it strangely, or if I could make details by inserting a pipe there, I would be able to create a column-beam structure. As a result, the red texture of the brick was mixed with the exture of iron and wood, creating a satisfactory result.

117

It is an isometric diagram showing only steel members. Long h-beams are not used as a general structure, but are used to fix bricks. There is a detail that holds through a hole in the brick.

118

14m

3m It is about 14 meters long and 3 meters wide. I did this for the first time, but it seems that the width, length, and shape of the space can be modified to some extent. If you check the appearance from the facade, you can see that it was borrowed from the form of a traditional Korean pavilion.

119

It is the process of inserting wooden roofs and bricks between the steel members. In particular, elm wood and oak wood were used for the wood, and the iron plate on the brick was used to fix the brick itself. At the same time, the facade was varied by using materials that match the physical properties of the brick itself.

It was created by thinking about the behavior of people who can sit or lie down. Practically, the width of the seating area is about 3 meters, and the area where the small roof rises like an eave in the robe is about 3.7 meters wide. Now, you can see that the facade is being constructed to match the surrounding landscape.

123

The following is a diagram depicting the manufacturing process of this pavilion. It is a method of manufacturing on-site by loading H-beams, wood, brick, and aluminum pipes. It can be easily produced anywhere.

124

As h-beams are first laid on the floor, standards for width and length can be established. This is a very important point. It is similar to the act of selecting the position of a cornerstone in traditional Korean architecture. Design of precise dimensions becomes possible. And step by step, the materials for the floor and roof are laid.

06 Private House -Stage in the House [2014] University of Seoul 2nd grade Project 2014. 03 - 2014. 06

293-4 Hwigyeong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul17-48 Euljiro 6-ga Mangro 14th Street 19-2

When trying to solve the logic of the house, I did not want to design the house with conventional logic such as the composition of the space that fits the 'Korean sentiment', the problem of the boundary between parents and children, and the problem of space distribution between siblings. If I asked an architect for a house, I would have asked to create a space where I could freely and form a'hobby' or some form of activity that I could do at home. In fact, it may be the limit of the school design, but this project was able to set the owner's job, age, marital status, and even child status at will. I was told to choose whatever you want and do whatever you want, but it would be nice to set the job as an area of interest to me. In the end, both husband and wife were set as a 'performance' job. Musicians and actors. If so, both jobs are jobs that work in a special space called 'stage'. Someone (I don't remember who) asked the question, "Is there anybody who wants to do their job from home?" I think I will. At least, if you are a person who has a 'love' for that job as much as your nails. (Is it going to the logic that someone who criticizes this way has no affection for their work?) The landscape of this family that I imagined was to use the empty space in the middle, that is, the courtyard, like a performance hall, to eat with the family or to enjoy a cup of coffee in the living room while watching their husband or wife practice in the center. A couple who have different occupations but share a common denominator. And an atmosphere where you can constantly express interest and affection for each other in the middle of the house. It seems to be the scenery of the house that I want.

127

This is the overall anatomy of the house. First of all, it was assumed that both the couple had a job performing on stage and that the architect had a desire to extend the behavior to some extent at home. Therefore, a space used as a performance hall and living room was created around the center courtyard, and the space was removed while the living room and private room were more private. The bathroom was made small in each room so that there was no need to move far. You can enter living rooms of different levels by walking a little from each room.

A music studio, a garage, and a private room are tied together in one mass, and the living room and bedroom are connected. In addition, living rooms with different levels of the courtyard enter by climbing the outdoor stairs. It is a house where you can fully feel the four seasons of Korea.

This is a floor plan drawn around the level of the courtyard space. Since the garage side is the entrance to the building, the layout itself was placed in the direction of the road, and a music studio was put in the mass behind it. There is a main living area and a courtyard area. And as you go up to the third floor, it has a structure that moves you to a more private space.

131

132

It is a cross-sectional view from all directions, east, west, north and south. It may be greedy to reveal the special setting of doing work related to the stage architecturally, but as a result of tenaciously drawing it out, it even made me think that the space called the courtyard could become a stage. I thought that all the behaviors of sitting and listening to music and drinking tea in different levels of space could be well mixed. Since a house is more than just a place to sleep and eat, there is room to meet the needs of families or individuals enough as it is custom-made. It can be a hobby or a job. Or it could be a place for socializing. The important point is that in thinning all of these things, you only need to take care of the essential elements that the space called home should have.
