Lincoln Nebraska

Civic Plaza 13th and P St. Design Project

In this studio exercise I was to create an urban plaza at the corner of P Street and 13th Street in downtown Lincoln. This project was used to test ideas developed throughout the class. I drew on my investigations from group analyses, professional documents, and precedent studies. This plaza was a priority catalyst project for the Downtown Lincoln Master Plan project. Catalyst projects should have the ability to: • Stimulate new downtown development and private investment. • Maintain and strengthen existing development. • Draw significant numbers of people to downtown. • Improve the quality of life for downtown Lincoln residents.

Analysis of the downtown 13th and P street location consists primarily of the businesses and parking garages within a three block radius from the site as well as the adjacent bus routes. P street has been designated as a retail corridor by the city of Lincoln and nearby O street cuts down town in half and defines the border between the northern and southern parts of the city. Denton Nebraska Audubon Spring Creek Prairie Nature Center

This Service-Learning project accompanied an introductory site grading class and was focused on developing a site to host the events planned by the Audubon Spring Creek Prairie Nature Center. Such events cover a range from private guest visits to large elementary school field trips as well as donor parties and weddings. The site was to be able to accommodate a staging ground for educational talks, a ramp lone enough to hold 120’ of tables, and a large tent (40x60 ft) who’s size was set in reference to a tent that can hold 200 to 400 hundred people depending on the activity within. The final design was oriented towards the rolling hills of the surrounding prairie with the ramp and swale located north of the terraces. The swale would contain vegetation that would continue the butterfly garden that exists uphill along the north side of the nature center.

Blind Landscape

The Blind Landscape consists of three site-less exercises joining selected typological landscape factors with material or phenomenal conditions as a means to generate landscape form and evaluate its consequences. The typological factors—circulation, canopy, landform, and figure/field—were studied through the manipulation of selected precedent projects that were seen as morphologically adaptable. Material and phenomenal characteristics included light and shade, moisture, texture, and permeability. The goal of the exercise was an introduction to a range of useful precedents as embodied knowledge and to emphasize an iterative work flow allowing for agility as we build spatial arguments through drawing, modeling, and critical evaluation of design proposals.

P 1.2

The second project focuses on the relationship between landform and view. This involves transforming a relatively flat surface from one of the plaza precedents used in 1.1, into a complex, three dimensional landform using cut and fill. The landforms may be composed of sloped planes, single or stepped horizontal planes, or faceted or curvilinear surfaces. As these surfaces will be accessible for people to walk or sit on, their configuration and orientation focuses views in particular directions. This exercise develops landform through one of the following spacial paradigms: 1. Generally inward looking 2. Generally outward looking 3. Views obscured

The third project focuses on the assembly of ground pattern, surface materials, and vegetation to study the concepts of field and permeability. This involves establishing a ground pattern derived from a precedent project, distributing ground materials throughout the pattern (10% subgrade, 60% granular, 30% unit pavement), and then introducing layers of

vegetation to compose a small, site-less public garden. With a precedent pattern “module will establish the geometry through which ground materials will be distributed. Also a spacial agenda will be established for the project: 1. Enclosures: No discernible enclosure; 1, 2, 3, or many 2. Physical

Site Systems III Bench Project

This project explored custom detailing through the creation of an object for sitting. The purpose of this project was to go through the entire process from design to construction. Easy to read drawings make easy to assemble designs; thus decreasing delays during construction which deceases cost. My team of two needed to purchase a single piece of 2x6x96 (inches) lumber and build an object for sitting. Objects had to be built within an 18x18x18 inch maximum space. Using only wooden joinery, dowels, and glue to construct the object the final test was to carry the weight of a person.

GIS

Surface and 3D Analysis

Application in Environmental Design & Planning

An introduction of contemporary theories, principles, and methods of environmental survey and analysis in design and planning and an analysis of the critical environmental elements, their interrelationships, and human interactions. This course emphasized synthesizing GIS spatial analysis skills and environmental analysis knowledge into a coherent concept for practical applications.

Soil Survey Geographic Database (SSURGO) For this soil map of Valley County, NE I first had to download the soil survey from the Geo-spatial Data Gateway before I could add the layer to ArcMap. Unfortunately the mapunit.txt file could not be accessed from Attribute Table in ArcMap due to the file format. This required that the mapunit.txt file be opened in Microsoft Access and saved in an Excel 97-2003 format. After adding a new Trust Center Location, enabling macros, and exporting to a file type that can be read by ArcMap I was able to join the mapunit. dbf to the soil shape file so that each specific soil would appear in the Attribute Table.

Extra Curricular Work & Pleasure

• Wooden Wine Rack Made in free time as a present • Custom Fireplace Individually framed • Stick-Framed Roof Roof joists, hips, and valleys • Custom Deck Stairs Deck and stairs with landing

Custom Fireplace For this custom framed fireplace; communication between the general contractor, the interior designer, the home owner, and myself was constant. Changing materials, as well as dimensions required several restarts in order to meet the finished specifications for the tile, stone and wood finishes that would cover the rough framing. (This picture was taken in the summer of 2013).

Stick-Framed Roof There are often times when a general contractor doesn’t want to pay for roof trusses which requires the framers to custom-cut all of the supports for the roof. Hips are straight forward square cut members but the joists and valleys are more specialized. Seat cuts are typical where the slope of the roof is the same but the left and right hand bevel cuts as well as the length vary depending on where they connect to the ridge. (This picture was taken in the summer of 2013).

Custom Deck Stairs This custom deck staircase was built with a typical (hem, pine, fir) mix and finished with cedar. All the posts are cedar and pressure treated wood was used at the point where the stairs meet the ground. The cedar posts were anchored on concrete footers with the use of a galvanized metal post base. The treads are specialized decking material and the half risers are a rough finished cedar. The metal powder coated railing was prefabricated and only needed to be cut to length and mounted on the landing and risers with vertical posts. The key skills gained from this type of project are problem solving, thinking about actual dimensions of materials, jointing and how parts fit together, and most important aesthetically speaking; thinking about which side of a piece of lumber looks better and should be visible. (This picture was taken in the summer of 2013).
