Product Naming and Labelling North America

Objectives By the end of this course you should be able to: 1.

Identify products using the product naming system.

2. List each label color and what it represents. 3.

Understand the subproduct identification codes for corn and soybean.

Introduction • Product naming is essential – Differentiate between products – Promote recognition of certain specific product features

• As DuPont Pioneer introduced more products, the naming system matured. • Product information for corn, soybean, and other crops can be determined from various sources: – Product Naming – Product Labelling – Product Packaging

Understanding the Naming System Having a clear understanding of the meaning behind product names is important – Communicate product information clearly – Differentiate between Pioneer® brand products and the products of other companies in the industry

Corn Naming System

Corn Naming System Product naming system is based on: • Brand Identity • Maturity • Hybrid Family • Trait Technology Identifiers

Corn Naming System Three Main Components: • Unique identifier (P) • Four numbers • Trait Identifier

Corn Naming System The first two numbers identify the comparative relative maturity (CRM) of the hybrid family. For families over 100 CRM, only the last two digits are used.

Corn Naming System The second pair of numbers are assigned randomly.

Corn Naming System Letters identifying trait technologies follow the numbers. • Letters will be smaller, capital letters.

Corn Naming System • Pronounce product names in full • Avoid dropping the “P” • Do not shorten the name • Four middle digits are said as two sets of double-digits • Zero can be pronounced as “zero” or “oh”

Corn Product Labelling

Corn Product Labelling • ONLY Roundup Ready® Corn 2 herbicide tolerance • Indicates insect protection traits • DO NOT spray with Liberty® herbicide • Not all seeds in the bag are tolerant to Liberty herbicide

Corn Product Labelling • Indicate Roundup Ready® Corn 2 herbicide tolerance • Conventional hybrid • No herbicide tolerance or insect protection traits

Corn Product Labelling Designates above-ground insect protection only.

Corn Product Labelling A brown tag will designate the following: • Above- & below-ground insect protection • Below-ground insect protection only

Corn Subproduct Identification Subproduct codes can be broken down to four characters to create a complete description: •

Country or Group

Treatment

Package Type

Planning Material or Kernel Size

Soybean Naming System

Soybean Naming System Four Main Components: • Unique Identifier (P) • Two sets of two numbers • T Series Identifier • Trait Identifier

P22T22R2 R2 = Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Soybean Naming System The first set of double numbers is the soybean’s relative maturity (RM). • RM descriptor numbers expand as necessary. • Examples: • P39T67R has a RM of 39 • P008T57R has a RM of 008

P22T22R2 R2 = Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Soybean Naming System The letter denotes the series of the soybean variety.

P22T22R2 R2 = Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Soybean Naming System The second double number is a random number, from 01 to 99.

P22T22R2 R2 = Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Soybean Naming System The last letter is the segment identifier. • R signifies the Roundup Ready® gene. • No letter at the end of name indicates conventional soybean.

P22T22R2 R2 = Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Soybean Subproduct Identification Subproduct codes can be broken down to four characters to create a complete description: • Country or Group • Treatment • Germ, Seed Count • Package/Delivery Type

To download a printable subproduct code resource, click the link on the screen: Subproduct Identification In this example, the subproduct represents: U.S. + Untreated + 90% or 85%, 140k + Paper Bag

WARNING: The DuPont™ ExpressSun® trait will safeguard this hybrid ONLY against applications of Tribenuron methyl, when applied at labeled rates. The DuPont™ ExpressSun® trait WILL NOT safeguard this hybrid against applications of other herbicides which require a different herbicide resistance trait. Always read and follow herbicide label instructions prior to use. APPLICATIONS OF INCOMPATIBLE HERBICIDES TO THIS HYBRID COULD RESULT IN TOTAL CROP LOSS. DuPontTM and ExpressSun® are trademarks or registered trademarks of DuPont or its affiliates. NuSun® is a registered certification mark of the National Sunflower Association.

Hybrids and varieties with the Roundup Ready® gene (RR) are tolerant to labeled rates of Roundup® branded herbicides. This technology allows for post-emergent applications of Roundup without crop injury or stress (see herbicide label). Labeled Roundup herbicide should only be used over the top of those hybrids and varieties that carry the Roundup Ready designation. Hybrids and varieties with the CLEARFIELD® trait (CL) are tolerant to labeled rates of Beyond®, Odyssey® or Absolute® herbicides. This technology allows for post-emergent applications of these herbicides without crop injury or stress (see herbicide label). Labeled herbicides should only be used over the top of those hybrids and varieties that contain the CLEARFIELD trait. Roundup Ready® and Roundup® are registered trademarks used under license from Monsanto Company. The unique Clearfield symbol and Clearfield® are registered trademarks of BASF.
