EDITORS NOTES Work is hard. You can’t get around it. To bring home the bacon, one must always earn it. Especially in Manila, the amount of effort everyone puts in their job from the sari-sari stores to the corporate heads is amazing. Don’t let a magazine job about food, events, and awesomeness fool you into thinking that every day is a fun day. Like any job, It has its difficult times, but the hardships can also make the perks perkier and make the rest time restful. We work hard because we want to play hard and with WU! we play a lot. So this issue is dedicated to those who wake up two hours earlier in the morning to meditate. This is for those that have a lunch break with family or friends in the middle of the work week. This is for those that look for adventure and fun before, during, and after work. This is for those that WORK HARD and PLAY RIGHT. -Juni Okeya

WU! WHAT’S UP! PERSON OF THE MONTH:
JAZ. DA.U.DE WAITER A waiter isn’t usually the first that comes to mind as Person of the Month, but at WU! Manila, any person can impress and inspire. Case and Point: Jaz from Da.U.De Tea Lounge. We featured this adorable tea shop in our last issue and while the
tea was different from your usual tea blends, so was the staff. The most impressive being a smiley, energetic, and efficient man named Jaz. Before we even went inside the store, we saw Jaz spot a few interested bystanders, sprint into the shop to grab a few menus, and chat up the curious
ladies passing by. The speed was impressive, but his commitment to his job and making the customers happy was amazing. It’s staff like this that you don’t want to let go of. I know for myself, I would go to this shop for a glass of iced tea, some Pho, and a smile from Jaz.
MALASAKIT SLOW DOWN “Take one for the Team” is the closest example of this often used phrase. “Compassion” can also be used. It is the manager that volunteers to clean up the office at the end of the day. It’s the office neighbor that brings donuts to everyone
for a pick-me-up. We all need that person from time to time. Why not try to be that person today? Do something nice and be “malasakit.”
WALANG PERSONALAN Business is business. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Walang Personalan. Nothing personal. So if you find any typos or slight mistakes in this month of WU! Sorry, Walang Personalan. ;-D

Plana Forma
With a mix of pilates, yoga, and dance and with more props than a rhythmic gymnast, Plana Forma does not get old. This fast paced invention inspired by Physique 57 from New York is a fantastic way to tone up and slim down. The pace of the class moves quickly with moves that makes one feel like a ballerina, yogi, and weight lifter in just under an hour. Working out the micromuscles through isometric training, this bar-style exercise does a lot of good for the small moves that are made. It’s like the Phoenix; burning you out only so you can rise from the ashes. During the class, even the
most experienced feel the “shakes” of the workout. On my tip toes while in a squat, my legs involuntarily were jittering like a caffeinated nervous rabbit, while I was only moving an inch up and down.

where for the most part of the day, priority is given to meditation and is conducted in silence. Teachers are there during certain times of the day
to guide with meditation and answer questions, but the purpose of this retreat is that by being in silence and learning the proper way to meditate, one can find their inner peace. The best part is, this course is absolutely free due to the
fact that previous students would pay for the courses through donations. It’s certainly a challenge for many of us to be in silence for a day, let alone ten days, but the course is well organized and each day brings a new sense of enlightenment and joy. If you feel or have felt the stresses of life and can handle being away for that time, take a look at the option of Vipassana Meditation and consider a course to help get your life back on the right track. Chronicles BURGER
The
Episode 3: BEEFY Burgers You come back from work with an appetite. It’s been hours since your last meal and you want to treat yourself to a high-protein dish. Join us as we look for the BEEFIEST burger Manila has to offer!
2nd's- The Safe Burger I went to 2nd’s not realizing I was going to order a beefy burger (oh how looks can be decieving). 2nd’s has compacted a large amount of meat into one burger. (495 Php) The 2nd’s burger was really tasty. It was juicy and had a delicious bun! However, I found myself not
being able to finish it due to the fact that it had such a surprising amout of meat. I found it to be a worthy BEEFY burger and look forward to finishing what’s on my plate next time. START HERE: 2ND’S- BONIFACIO HIGH STREET, COR. 2ND AVENUE 3RD FLOOR (NEXT TO AGAVE)
Zarks- The Mavrick Burger I know I’m only supposed to eat PLAIN cheeseburgers, but the Maverick (190 Php) was too good to pass up. The burger itself wasn’t that juicy, but it suuurreee was tasty. The secret was it’s pepper-spiced patty. As a fan of pepper, I was in heaven as it gave a hot touch to the meal. Although it had onion pieces in it, I couldn’t taste it at all (which
is big for a non-veggie eater). As for the fried bacon, it was like munching into something divine. It was crunchy, meaty, and amazing. Overall, my experience at Zark’s was awesome. This place is definitely made for beefy dudes that love MEAT. Like me! START HERE: ZARK’S- 2ND FLOOR ARCHERS’S NOOK BLDG,TAFT (FRONT OF LA SALLE TAFT. TOP OF
Eat My GF- The Big OHHH In the hidden area of San Juan, there exists a provocatively named resturaunt “Eat My GF” and its massive burger: The Big OHHH (350 Php). A burger that’s 50% bacon & 50% beef.! There’s no mistaking it.This was a GOOD burger. I loved it. Besides the toasted bread and melted cheese, the thing that stood out
was it’s juicy bacon-flavored meat. Tip: If your hand is greased up from holding the burger., they’re doing something right. In short. Go to Eat My GF. It’s a truly delicious experience that’ll leave you hot and bothered for more. START HERE: EAT MY GF - ALABANG TOWN CENTER AND CALDERON ST. LITTLE BAGUIO, SAN JUAN, MANILA

RANT Burger Philosophy by the Burger Master
Hello Readers. My name is Jon and I am the Burger Master. The question: Would an average American love Philippine’s burgers? The answer, I find...Is yes. In my 7 months here, I’ve scoured the grey jungle known as Manila in search for the most appetizing burger. In my honest opinion, there are some pretty nasty burgers being served around the city. Soggy buns, dry meat, and cardboard cheese has been discovered in my meals countless of times. But as harsh as it may sound, If you really take a GOOD look at your surroundings, you’ll find hidden gems. One thing pretty awesome about Philippines is their willingness to innovate. And since I’ve been here I’ve had some CRAZY additions in my patty (Fried Bacon, Marinara, truffles, sauteed spinach...). Overall, being a foreigner in a far off land can be tough, but trust me on this one, if you’re an American Expat, open your eyes and you’ll find a quality slice of your own homeland right here! ANYTIME YOU’RE IN THE MOOD FOR A DELICIOUS BURGER, CHECK OUT MY ARTICLE: THE BURGER CHRONICLES! AND IF YOU HAVE ANY RECCOMENDED BURGER PLACES, PLEASE WRITE TO WUMANILA@GMAIL.COM AND WE’LL GO CHECK IT OUT!

SPOTLIGHT: MAPLE I’m sure Alice would have wanted to fall into THIS Wonderland. The San Antonio Plaza is already a quaint world away from the business of Makati and the vastness of the Fort. Arriving in Maple is just diving further down the rabbit hole. With a romantic palette of mahogany, burnt orange, and creamy gray, all I want to do is curl into a corner and read a book. But since I was in a restaurant, I sat in one of their window seats instead. We were welcomed by Chef Patrick. A young man of 23, blessed with an amazing gift to create extraordinary food. Chef Patrick had
an impressive variety of American home cooking. So good, I tear up from the nostalgia and deliciousness. Chef Patrick learned his trade from the staple state of home cooking,Texas and was taught by the masters in Horseshoe Bay, learning the art of the creating the unique. Each dish that came out felt like a whole new world just steps away from my favorite restaurant back home. NEXT TIME I’M IN BORACAY...
Why Ole...? SOME 8 years ago, Ole opened in the new d’mall in Boracay. In the beginning, the restaurant featured only traditional Spanish cuisine but upon demand, Mexican & Cuban entrees were introduced. Beside the three main cuisines, Ole features an extremely large menu including Salads, Pastas, Poultry, Steaks, and Pizzas in addition to a variety of delicious Seafood and Vegetarian dishes. The customer can virtually eat almost anything that they desire. A children's menu and also a full bar offers excellent wines and liquor from all over the world complimenting the already huge & varied menu. One of the amazing things about Ole is that you can order breakfast, lunch, or dinner at any time during a full 24 hour period. Favorites include Spanish Paella (8 different varieties) & Mexican Fajitas. Ole recently added air conditioning so the customer can choose air conditioning inside or the natural breeze outside. Ole is indeed A Treat That You Deserve.

TAGAYTAY BIRDS, CASTLES, VOLCANOS, OH MY! A trip proposed by Pipo Fernandez of the Alfonso Hotel. If you’re going to be in Tagaytay to escape the big city and you want to see something unique, I recommend birds and a castle.Yep,... there is a real life castle. Ok, its a modern development that hasn’t quite finished yet, but it is definitely picture worthy. Then if you’re interested in something amazing, you can hop on a boat to Taal Volcano and you’ll
easily be able to see over 30 of the hundreds of birds reportedly living on the island. It’s a truly remarkable bird sanctuary. Bird habitats in the Philippines have suffered significantly from deforestation. That’s why Mayor Salvador of San Nicolas and the Joint Batangas and Cavite Tourism Council created the habitat and planted over 200,000
fruit trees on the volcano island. We recommend this trip not only because it’s a unique thing to do, but because you can see a castle, tons of birds and help support the reforestation of the Philippines. Oh, and don’t forget your binoculars, a camera and WU! Magazine.

TREKKING SPOT :
TREKKING WAWA DAM!
Trip proposed by Fredda Ruth Rosete I have good news for fellow adventure-seekers in Manila looking to travel somewhere near and cheap. I just found out that there are still many unexplored mountains and waterfalls in Wawa Dam, Montalban, Rizal. I’ve been there many times already, but because of my guide we were able to go to the top Mt. Pamitinan (famous
for its cave) after a 3 hour long wild and difficult trail covered with leaves, hardly any flat ground and the steep inclination had some precipitous drops and big jagged rocks. If that sounds a bit too adventurous, there is another 3000 feet route that requires a 3 hour easy climb, that is wor th a visit.
23 I WU! Manila Work Hard, Play Right
Take note that you can easily reach Wawa Dam by taking a one-hour ride in the FX from Gateway, Cubao which costs P50. Renting the whole FX only costs P700. Then you take a P10 tricycle from Montalban town proper to Wawa Dam and trek to the 180-feet high waterfalls (3-4 hour easy trek)! It’s a sensible day trip idea that is cheap and I doesn’t require you to wake up that early.
If you take off around 9 or 10 from Cubao you can have a great day. START HERE: LOG ON TO MANILA COUCH SURFING FACEBOOK PAGE AND MEET GREAT PEOPLE DOING AMAZING THINGS! SPECIAL THANKS TO ALEXANDER ZOSA, OZ MENDOZA, AND FREDDAR ROSTE FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE INSPIRATION

WU! MY MANILA Help from a style and grooming blogger, Kevin Yapjoco
I’ve heard of businessmen say “I have to wear many hats during the week to make things happen” and just like these ‘hats’, sometimes we need to show that we mean business, but can Manila compete with the likes of
Hong Kong Tailors? I found Bespoke Man while trying to answer these questions. Written by Kevin Yapjoco, from my head down to my toes, I found a plethora of helpful advice to help even the most ‘practical of guys’.
uy “I’m a practical g the and I don’t have ut time to worr y abo fashion.”
I’ve never thought more about my shoes more than “they look good.” and “the price is ok”. I found out from Bespoke Man: 1. Quality shoes can be bought for less than P3,000 2. They can be re-soled for about P600 - P900 3. Resoling a shoe to me = buying new shoes doesn’t need to happen often. 4. Shoe horns and shoe trees (wooden shoe stuffing) extends shoe life
A custom tailored quality suit for around 8,000 peso is possible. Kevin showed me the way to buying the fabric, getting fitted and directing the tailor. Here’s a quick outline of what I’ve learned from Bespoke Man: Fabric: Head to Binondo. Other places are double to quadruple the costs, but... 1. Don’t trust the labels 2. They don’t truly sell imported cloth 3. P300 - P800 peso a yard is fair 3. Most sellers only want a sale and don’t know their goods. 4. It’s important to check how the fabric feels on your skin
The Tailor and Fitting: 1. Know what you want before you arrive 2. You’re going to pay P3,000 - P6,000s for your suit to be cut, made and trimmed (CMT) 3. Make sure to come in for a fitting before it’s finalized. 4. Make sure to sit and stretch in it. 5. Take notice of the length. To show or not to show socks watches and necks. My wife goes to the spa, does her nails, hair and takes care of her skin because it’s therap eutic. After reading Kevin’s blog and taking a look at myself and I can see a number of “Man epeutic” habits of my own. The Shave If I have to do it so often, I might as well: 1. Get a shaving brush for about P100 2. Artisan shaving soap can be bough t for about P150 3. Shaving oil can smoothen the shave and goes for P350 4. Cuts don’t need little pieces of TP anym ore. P60 for a styptic pencil
The Smokes. I am not an advocate of smoking, but here and there my wife and I have shared a good cigar. Our graduation. Our Wedding day. Celebrating our loses in Vegas and the christening of our new home. Here are my thoughts on them: 1. They’re to be puffed not inhaled 2. Great for special occasions 3. A nice outfit + Cigar = I feel like a boss. =D 4. For the first timers try the Alhambra Corona Cigar which has a light and clean taste If you find yourself wanting to spruce up your wardrobe and enhance your manepeutic habits, check the bespokemanblog.com and our directory for any products and places that’s been mentioned.

GET CONNECTED There are two things that I constantly hear when people talk about their love for the Philippines. “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” and “I love the people here.” A great place is more than beautiful beaches and fantastic food (although that does help a lot). We love music at WU! Manila, thats why we asked our friends from Pindie music help us find the most rocken' venues and most talented artists. Manila has never been so Alive!
Many of their listeners have tried to give their music a tag, the only way to understand this nameless genre is to turn it up and get down. Though collaborations with Scotland’s, Blue Nile, and exposure by DJ Mark Cole’s BBC UK radio show, and Time Magazine Asia have helped push their music internationally, they continue to regularly perform across the city. Well-known brands like Lipton, Coke, and McDonald’s have closely worked with the band in previous campaigns, including Puma for whom they became brand ambassadors. Their debut album, Fragmented hit #1 and stayed in the charts for weeks from its release in early 2006, their sophomore effort, Bipolar, in 2008 garnered critical acclaim, and their most recent work, Capacities, has established as arguably the country’s most accomplished independent act. -Motorman Writhes
On a big night, you’ll sweat, you’ll grind, you’ll sit, stand and swoon, you’ll be thiscloseto top music talent, and you’ll spill out into the street around 2am with the rest of us: grinning, bewildered, and with change in your pocket ‘cos it’s bang-for-buck time too. As the granddaddy of Makati’s San Antonio Village budding bohemian scene, SaGuijo is all about the music, and as authentic a place as you’ll find this close to the central business district. SaGuijo takes an old house with wooden floorboards, goes crazy with music stickers and random memorabilia, ignores the need for a formal stage, throws in the gorgeous Snow Tattoo parlor upstairs (run by Turbo Goth‘s, Sarah Gaugler), the Pocket Universe Art Gallery, the Pindiegear.com shop, and finishes off with staff that you’ll come to know and love.” Full write-up at pindiemusic.com/saguijo Photo credit: L. 33 I WU! Manila Work Hard, Play Right
INSPIRATION!
The message is being “Young at Heart”.The medium is design. Hi readers! My name is Jon Kenzo Okeya and I am in charge of the design and photography for the rambunctious magazine known as WU! Manila. Coming to Philippines a half-a-year ago, I had my doubts. I left my home in LA for a strange foreign land, leaving behind my friends and my familiar surroundings. It was painful and often pretty lonely. Even working in the magazine I couldn’t help but to feel sorry for myself and often times would lick my wounds and doubt my decisions. I was both bitter and confused. It was then when my favorite song started playing. An old Frank Sinatra song dubbed, “Young At Heart”. I guess it’s when you’re really vulnerable that you listen the most. I sat down and let the song carry me. “Fairy tales can come true, It can happen to you. If you’re young at heart.”
It’s then when I realized I had no time to feel sad about myself and that I had a magazine to design. Now, we are on our third issue. We have a vast network of wonderful friends, a loving family, and a chance at something incredibly remarkable. I am now starting my new design studio dubbed “Young At Heart” as a statement, That no matter what happens in life, as long as you have a great attitude, be playful, and have fun, you too can be happy. I love my life, my magazine, my family, my girl and my new studio. I guess fairy tales can come true! -Jon Kenzo Okeya. Director of Design at WU! Need some pictures or graphics? Contact me at tobeyoungatheart@gmail.com! Let’s get to work!
My eyes we’re opened and I felt like I could see again.
NEXT ISSUE... Art is booming in Manila. Millions upon millions of everyday people are creating, molding, painting, and sculpting in their own professions. Art exists everywhere.
Not just in the studio. From delicious foods we eat, to the movies we see, to the products we buy, all of them crafted to excellence just for you.
The next issue we’ll dive into the special places in Philippines where art can be created, examined, and found. The spirit of Manila rests in the hands of artisians, poets, writers, businessmen, and cooks! Find them all in... THE ART ISSUE!
