JUNCTION 2016-2017

Principal’s Corner Dear Members of ISGJ Community, We live in interesting times. I hope you have enjoyed the past few weeks. I know we have enjoyed working with students on all number of special events going on around school. One of which is a successful Week Without Walls campaign. Our students have been abroad and also in school and around the community taking part in a number of alternative learning experiences. Be it cooking, game making, interior design, wrestling or football/soccer, students have been engaged in learning how to manage themselves in different environments and involving different skills. Our garden is flourishing and we hope sustainable. I would like to applaud the students for their commitment and dedication throughout this week. And I would also like to point out the creativity and commitment the teachers have put in throughout this week. Thank you teachers and students! Our commitment to student learning is unwavering. I would like to point out that we have undertaken a number of initiatives throughout the past two years. We continued to focus on our school-wide goals of writing curriculum, committing to teamwork and differentiated instruction. We welcome Virginia Rojas into the school from the 26th of November to the 1st of December. She will be working on EAL and differentiated instruction with our team for this week. This will culminate in a half day of learning for teachers on December 1st. This means that students will be leaving school early. We will have an 11:15 dismissal on Thursday the 1st of December.

I would like to point out that our faculty is strong; quite possibly the strongest we have had in Jubail for a long time. We will not rest on our laurels. It will be our goal to continue to find ways to improve how we are meeting the needs of our students. It is what we do and we know that our mission is never completely accomplished. Our goal is to continue to question, seek understandings, and move up the table of Bloom’s Taxonomy as outlined in the diagram. As we continue to have the Homework Conversation, I would encourage you to read this article from the Guardian about the wisdom of expecting homework from Elementary Students. It is a questionable practice and has been proven to only make children feel more frustrated about school and reading to be more specific. The value of having students come home from school, where they have just spent 6 hours working and learning, get outside and play, mix it up and get a little dirty, is monumentally important. Please join us for our next ES evening forum and MS/HS coffee morning to discuss the HW scenario. I would also encourage you to view the slides that were shared last week during our evening showing of the documentary Screenagers. We had about 40 parents in attendance to view this interesting movie about the complications and struggles we face with our children and their relationships with their devices. Have a wonderful week everyone and enjoy the fresh cooler air! Dan Mock, Principal Follow me on Twitter

World Kindness Day Have you heard about World Kindness Day? It was on the 13th of November, Dr. Sarah-Kate and the Me 2 We leaders made a World Kindness Day event at lunch, where they handed out colored paper strips and asked the children to write about kindness, The strips will be used for a kindness chain so our school halls will be filled with kindness!! World Kindness Day is important because most kids know they should be kind but don’t care much about it, so you could call this more of a World Kindness Awareness. Even though World Kindness day is only one day it doesn’t mean you should only be kind on that day, EVERYDAY is World Kindness Day, Share Kindness Today, Tomorrow, and Everyday. Let’s ROAR For Change!! Mrs. Tenzythoff, Dr. Sarah-Kate Hawkins & ME 2 WE Students Written by Alyn Chen Joy, pride and Wow! are the feelings I had while hanging our Kindness chain in our elementary hallway this morning. After hearing about this worldwide event, our ME 2 WE students stepped up and got their fellow classmates excited to share their thoughts and feelings about Kindness. I am thrilled to know that Kindness is alive and well with our young learners. -- Dr. Sarah-Kate

MS/HS Art

T

he art room is a hive of activity. Grade 6 and 7 finished a design that began with a bicycle. Zooming into a section with a viewfinder allowed students to see and draw the many negative and positive shapes. They used a monochromatic color scheme to paint the negatives shapes, while the positive were collaged maps. P and PreAP focused on the skeleton as the subject. Photoshoots started the creative process. Using their choice of media, the class has a wide variety of design solutions. rade 8, 9/10 are finishing a unit on ink and ink wash. First, controlling the ink with washes was required to create the illusion of 3-D forms (sphere, cube, cylinder…) , which are shown inside sketchbooks. Expressive use of ink and ink washes was next. Students experimented using the ink on paper and plastic surfaces and explored what marks they could make using uncommon tools like foam brushes, sticks, and texture combs. The goal was to make a wide range of marks and build a textured surface. This laid the groundwork for our upcoming, new mixed media project - make artwork that gives a “Creepy” feeling.
