Hi everyone, Welcome to COLLEGE....and what’s even better.....Welcome to TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN and to the TCD Students’ Union! For most of you, it’s welcome back after the summer, but to all the Freshers out there, it’s a big hello and welcome to what should be some of the best craic and the best years of your lives! If you are a student in Trinity, you are a member of the Students’ Union. And being a member of the SU means that:

If you are having any kind of trouble, the SU will stick up and fight for you. If you ever need a hand, the SU will be here to help and support you. If the College is doing something you don’t like, we’ll take your side. We represent your views, protect your rights and provide important services for YOU! The Students’ Union is here to make your life in Trinity easier, safer, better and to make sure there is good craic all the way along. What you have in your hand now is actually partdiary and partsurvival guide, because if you need to know just about anything about College, then this is your quick reference guide. Everything from “Who the hell is the Provost?” to “What do I do if I fail an exam?” to “Where’s the best place to get a Quarter Pounder at 4 in the morning?” is covered in here, so hang on to it for the year and it won’t let you down. The Students’ Union is much more than 5 officers, and it could not function without your support and your participation. Running for Class Rep (and organising Class parties), writing for the Times or helping with a campaign (like fighting Fees) would be a few good places to start. It really is all up to YOU! Please do not be shy about dropping into our offices (which are in House 6, on the left as you walk in through Front Arch) to say hello, ask questions or get some help. Remember, House 6 is for students, and the Students’ Union will always be here for YOU! Ádh Mór don Bhliain,

Cónán, Ashley, Cormac, Rob & Mick

If you are a student in Trinity, you are a member of the Students’ Union. Sounds pretty simple....but what exactly is the Students’ Union and what does being a member of it mean? Put simply it is the organisation in College which works for YOU, takes care of YOU when YOU need a hand, looks after YOUR interests and basically tries to improve YOUR life in College. It is run by 5 full time Officers (President, Education Officer, Welfare Officer, Communications Officer and Entertainments Officer) who are elected by YOU every year. They all have offices in House 6 in Front Square, so if you’ll find them there if you need to talk to them.

So what has the SU got to offer me as a member? Well it runs 2 shops (House 6 and the Hamilton), a bookshop (1st Floor, House 6) and offers free help on pretty much all aspects of your College life. So if you are having trouble with coursework or your lecturer is being a bit mean about something, talk to the Education Officer (Ashley Cooke). Or if you’re having nonacademic problems (like finding somewhere to live, if you need a loan of money or if you’re feeling a bit down over something) come in and talk to the Welfare Officer (Cormac Cashman).

Ok, but what else? Well, the SU publishes a paper to let you know what’s going on in College, and if you want to write for it, talk to the Communications Officer (Rob Donohoe). It also has a great website which can be used for NoteSharing in your class (which will be handy at exam time) and if that isn’t enough, it also has a full time Ents Officer (Mick Birmingham), who’s job it is to basically make sure your nights out are cheap, cheerful and above all good craic

Anything else? Oh, yeah, it has a tough streak. It stands up and fights for YOU when somebody (usually the Government, the College or the Media) decides to either pick on students or to squeeze more money out of us, which happens fairly often. It also runs a whole load of campaigns on different problems which affect students, and stands up for you on the important committees where the decisions are made.

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES The Students’ Union could not operate without the work of the Class Reps. Each year and course in College can elect at least one Class Rep to represent their views to the Union. Class Reps are voting members of SU Council and can use this to direct the SU’s activities and work. A Class Rep can be as effective as any Sabbatical Officer in dealing with the problems that their class may encounter. It is the Class Rep’s job to talk to lecturers if there is a problem or to get an extension on an assignment for their class. A Class Rep can organise parties for their class and use the Union’s resources to get deals and discounts. Class Reps can be voted onto different committees which are set up by the Union to look at particular issues facing students, whether it is how to make the College more environmentally friendly or how to make RAG week even better. The Class Rep is a way for students to tell the Sabbatical Officers what they should be doing and what they are doing wrong. Being a Class Rep involves working closely with both college staff and students. It is a great experience and a fantastic way to throw yourself head first into College life. It’s also one of the best ways to make friends from all across the College. You’ll get to know your class, emailing and speaking with them regularly, and working through problems. A Class Rep is essentially the Welfare, Education, Communications and Ents officer for their class.

SU COUNCIL SU Council is the driving force behind the Union and is used to guide the Sabbatical Officers and Convenors in their work. It is the main decision making body in the Union. It meets a number of times each year to discuss and debate issues that Class Reps and Officers feel will effect students. Every student is welcome to attend and speak at council, but only Class Reps, Officers of the Union, Affiliate Colleges’ Presidents and representatives of the Graduate Students’ Union may vote. SU Council can pass policy on everything from Library conditions and food prices in the Ham Caf to ethical trading and the Unions’ stance on fees.

Faculty Assemblies Faculty Assemblies involve the Sabbatical Officers, the Class Reps and the School and Faculty Convenors from a particular faculty. They discuss unique issues facing students of the faculty. Faculty Assemblies meet throughout the year and can be used to devise policy to be brought to SU Council.

Electoral Commission (EC) The Chair of Council doubles as the Chair of EC. Her objective in both instances is to ensure Union matters are conducted in as fair and impartial a manner as possible. She will endeavour to ensure that Council runs as smoothly as possible, with anyone who wishes to make a valid point being allowed to do so. She, along with the EC, has the task of overseeing every stage of SU elections. Oversight Commission (OC) The OC serves an important function in the Union, making sure that all officers do their best to follow through on mandates. The OC manages and maintains the Union’s policy. Any student in the College can ask the OC about policy that the Union has and whether the Union has acted on policy. The Chair of the OC is also the Secretary to Council. The Chair of the OC this year is Christian Wirtz.

JCR The Junior Common Room (JCR) is a Café and Chillout area located in Goldsmith Hall, on the corner of Westland Row and Pearse Street. The eccentric staff make great rolls and sand wiches, including the famous ‘Whole Hog’, which contains a lot of pig meat and some beans. To the right of the food counter you’ll find a chillout area, with loads of couches, pool tables, board games, and a Playstation. The rule with food in the JCR is “Unless we made it, you made it or your Mama made it, don’t bring it in”, which is pretty damn fair!

BOOK SHOP The Students’ Union Bookshop Coop is located on the first floor of House 6. It is open between 9:30am and 5:30pm, Monday to Friday during termtime. Bookshop staff also organise bookstalls in the Arts Block and Hamilton on a regular basis. The Coop buys and sells secondhand course books, with book buying days organised to coincide with the end of exams in early June. A fixed rate of 30% RRP is offered for all books. The Coop endeavours to stock books relevant to all the various courses taught in Trinity, as well as a broad range of literary fiction. Lab coats and dissection instruments are also available for purchase.

SU SHOPS The Students’ Union runs two shops on Campus. One is located on the ground floor of House 6 and the other beside the main entrance to the Hamilton Building (underneath the steps). These shops stock the basic foods that you’ll need to live (beans, noodles, milk and bread), as well as sweets, crisps and drinks. Costprice condoms, student bus and Luas tickets, and studentpriced newspapers are also available, along with Trinity hoodies and other merchandise. The shop now sells CocaCola products, following a referen dum to lift the ban last year, although Nestlé products are still not stocked due to alleged human rights violations.

SU FRONT OFFICE Across from the SU shop in House 6, on the immediate left as you enter the building, is the Students’ Union Front Office. In this office you will find information on employment, accommo dation and other services that the Students’ Union provides. This is also where you can buy a Student Travelcard, which entitles the holder to discounts of up to 30% on travel prices, as well as discounts at several retailers. If you want to purchase a Student Travelcard, simply turn up with your TCD Student Card, fill out a form, pose for a photo, and wait thirty seconds for your card to print. It’s that easy! Cards cost €15. Front Office also sells ISIC cards (student cards which are internationally recognised) and offers fax, photocopying and passport photo services.

What is the story with FEES? There is a lot of confusion out there about what is going on with fees, so hopefully this will make things a bit clearer for everybody.

The truth is nobody knows yet what is going to happen with fees. It is all still very much up in the air, but here is what we do know for sure:

The government wants to bring back fees in some shape or form It might be a loan system (where we all graduate with up to €40,000 of debt), or it might be upfront fees (where our families have to shell out up to €10,000 a year to send us off to college). Either way, it is students and their families who will have to foot the bill for the government’s mistakes. The government has indicated that, if fees are brought back, this year’s freshers will have to pay, probably from next year onwards.

Exactly how much do they want us to pay? It depends on the course, but the latest figures are around €6,000€7,000 per year for arts courses and around €7,000€8,000 per year for science, engineering and nursing. That doesn’t include the €1,500 annual registration fee or the cost of living in college (which Bank of Ireland estimates to be around €9,000€10,000 per year). So all told, getting your hands on a degree could easily cost as much as €80,000 if they decide to bring back fees.

02

Is there any decent argument for the government’s plan to bring back fees? In a word: no. The government already under funds education in Ireland to the tune of around €2.5 billion (or 1.4% of gdp) compared to the rest of the European Union, but at the same time want to build a ‘knowledgeeconomy’ which relies on a large number of skilled college graduates. When you throw into the mix that college graduates pay on average 70% more tax than nongraduates throughout their lives, it really makes no sense to make decrease access to third level education, especially at a time when the dole queues are out the door.

Anything else important? Yep, and it ain’t too good either. The report from ‘An Bord Snip’ wants to cut the funding for the already poor maintenance grants by €70 million, or around 25%. That means that students who are really living on a shoestring might be forced out of college and onto the dole because they cannot afford to live in college or else they’ll be forced into some pretty heavy debt. Is this fair? Is this the way to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds to get a thirdlevel education and to make a better life for themselves? Nope...but the government doesn’t just isn’t listening.

What can you do about it? Lots and lots and lots. This decision is being made by politicians, and politicians only under stand one currency: Votes. Ring up your own government T.D. (Fianna Fáil or Greens), demand a meeting with them (it’s your right to do so) and let them know that if they don’t stop this, then you, your family and all your friends won’t vote for them in the next election (then sit back and watch them squirm when they hear that!). If there is a protest, come out and show how you feel about being made to pay for others’ mistakes. Whatever you do....make noise, speak up and let them know how you feel. If the government don’t hear you, they’ll assume you are ok with footing a €40,000 bill and they’ll go ahead with their plans. If they think you’re really annoyed about it, they’ll think twice....it really all comes down to what YOU are going to do!

+%#/")*B($")-&*Q55/@%*2#,*$J%* B($")/23*+%)O/@% '"()*M%)&"#23*B($") Each undergraduate student at Trinity is assigned a personal tutor on entry to College. Tutors are members of the Academic Staff who are specifically appointed to tutorship to provide personal and academic support to undergraduate students, in addition to their normal academic duties. Their main function is to advise, listen to concerns, help tutees deal with issues as far as possible and refer more serious difficulties to the appropriate student services. Your tutor will usually come from an academic area closely related to your course and is often the first point of contact when a student needs information or is confronted with personal or academic difficulties. They will deal with any queries you may have in an efficient and confidential way, and in particular, will advise you on academic matters such as course choices, transferring course, taking a year offbooks, failing exams and repeating. All tutorial matters are strictly confidential, so don’t be afraid to discuss any personal matters which are impacting on your studies or your enjoyment of college. Every student should meet their tutor in Freshers’ Week. It is important to establish initial contact with your tutor, as this is the person who will be there to advise you and to fight your corner if you have any problems throughout your college career. Computers are a vital part of College life for students of all disciplines. It is unlikely that you will be able to get through a degree without some computer skills. Coursework, such as essays, often involves using computers, and your lecturers and Students’ Union will often contact you via your TCD email account. Information Systems Services (ISS) is responsible for providing all the main computing services on campus, such as computer rooms, the college network, email and the wireless network. They also organise discounted laptops for students, through Dell and Apple amongst others. Their website http://isservices.tcd.ie has all the information you will need about the services and IT support they provide. Once you register, you will get a unique College username, which will give you access to College computers, the College network, email and 100MB of file storage. Many of the College computer rooms hold classes during the day, and others are often very busy. There are certain rules to follow when using the computer rooms; no eating or drinking, no mobile phones, no porn, and if you have to use Bebo / Facebook, don’t take too long and only when it’s quiet. There are ‘standup’ email stations around campus as well if you just want to check your email. A full list of rules and guidelines is available at http://isservices.tcd.ie. Along with a username, you will get your own personal @tcd.ie email address. The TCD MyZone email service is provided by Google, meaning that you get a massive 7GB of space and you get to keep your address for life. It also means you can add all sorts of useful Google applications to your account, such as a calendar, news reports or 1 of 10 different Chuck Norris fact generators. You can waste your days chatting to your friends on Gmail chat too. With your username and password you also have access to the College network from your own personal laptop using a system called the NAC. You can connect through network points in the library and residences (including halls) and also to the wireless network which covers most of the campus. For a full list of wireless locations visit http://isservices.tcd.ie/network/map.php Printing in College is organised by a company called Ricoh. You can print from any college computer, or your own computer on the NAC, to any printer, provided you have credit in your account. Credit can be added to your account in the ‘Virtual Cash Accep tors’ near the computer rooms in the Arts Building, Ussher Library, Hamilton Building and Áras an Phiarsaigh. Printing is charged at 5c a page black and white, and 50c colour. For more detailed information visit http://isservices.tcd.ie/facilities/printing.php. \4KRWR' Trinity College Library is the largest research library in Ireland. As a Legal Deposit library, it is entitled to receive a copy of every book and journal title published in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The collections include at least 4.5million books, 25,000 printed periodi cal titles, 50,000 electronic periodicals and 300,000 electronic books.

Web site and Online Catalogues This year, the Library is introducing a completely revamped web site and online catalogues. The web site will have all the information you need to know about the services offered and where everything is. The Stella Catalogue is the main search tool. Just enter the Title, Author’s name or some key words, and the catalogue will tell you exactly where you can find the book you are looking for. The books in the reading rooms are arranged by subject according to the Dewey Classification system, where each major division of knowledge is given a number from 100 to 999, so that all books on similar topics is kept together.

Bookstacks The size of the Library means that only a small proportion of the books are available on open shelves in the reading rooms. The majority is on closed access, held either in Stacks on Campus, or in a repository in Santry. Most closedaccess books can be sent for by placing an ‘Automated Stacks Request’, following the instructions in the online catalogues. Otherwise you can use call slips, which are available at the reading room counters. Stacks books are usually delivered within a few hours, while deliveries are made from Santry on a daily basis.

Borrowing Only books marked ‘LEN’ or SLEN can be taken out of the Library by undergraduates. LEN books with a yellow sticker can be taken out for a week, while those without a sticker can be borrowed for a month. Undergrads are allowed to take out up to four books at any one time, and books can be renewed through the online catalogue. Postgrads can borrow up to 10 books at any one time. Fines are imposed if books are not returned by their due dates, but the library will send you an email informing you of the due date as it approaches.

C.S.C. The Central Societies Committee (CSC) facilitates the work of the student societies in Trinity College. The CSC is composed of elected students and staff whose sole purpose is to ensure that student societies have the best support, help and advice available to them. The CSC produces a guide (available during Freshers’ Week and throughout the year) to give you an idea of all the student societies that exist in Trinity College. The CSC website, www.trinitysocieties.ie, also has links to all of the societies’ own websites, and a weekly event guide gives information on what societies are organising. The easiest and best time of the year to join a society is during Freshers’ Week. Front Square is taken over for the week by all the societies and sports clubs, all of them fighting to secure your membership. For a small fee, usually 2 or 3 Euro, you can join any society of your choos ing. There are around 100 recognised societies, with everything from debating to dancing, sign language to scifi, acting to archaeology, and comedy to being in a choir. These societies exist because students who have gone through college over the years have wanted them to exist, and invested time and effort to set them up and sustain them. If you feel that a particular interest is not catered for, you can set up a society yourself. Just contact the CSC for further details. For any extra information, you can email Lucy in the CSC at lucy@csc.tcd.ie. You'll find direct contact details for all of the CSC's officers on www.trinitysocieties.ie.

TRINITY PUBLICATIONS The awardwinning magazines and newspapers that make up Trinity’s vibrant student media, with the exception of The University Times, are supported by Trinity Publications, which is comprised entirely of elected students and exists solely to facilitate the activities of student editors, journalists (and readers!) on campus. Getting involved with Publications is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills that are actually useful and help make something that you can take pride in. In a few months time you could be discovering your talents as a sports photographer, interviewing celebrities, going to gigs to review the latest bands or writing cutting pieces of satire for The Piranha. And it won’t cost you a penny! All students are encouraged to contribute to our publications; Applications to start up new student publications in College are welcome, and publications can offer funding and advice to help you get started. To find out more contact the Chairperson, Luke, at maishmal@tcd.ie, or the Secretary, Grace, at gwalsh2@tcd.ie. If you see yourself as more of a casual reader, look out for issues of our publications, which are normally distributed free on campus:

We in the Students’ Union are very aware of the difficulties you will encounter in finding, securing and holding onto a decent place to live for your years in Trinity. Congratulations to those of you who managed to get rooms in Trinity Halls or oncampus! The rest of you who are living away from home (maybe for the first time) will have to deal with outrageous rents, finicky landlords, rising damp, ‘interesting’ flatmates, and bill after bill after bill. These ominous premonitions aside, you are about to embark on one of the most exciting and rewarding episodes in your life, living on your own like a grownup and all that goes with it, good and bad. You may not have had much (if any) contact with illicit substances to date – but all that could be about to change. You will inevitably come into contact with people who use drugs while you are at college and you may be invited to partake. Remember that however you decide to deal with the drug issue is cool and if other people don’t like it well that’s their problem. You may go to parties and feel like the biggest nerd ever created for not partaking in some wacky tabaccy. But if your friends are worth keeping they’ll respect your right not to join in.

In College, sexual harassment is defined as “any attempt to coerce an unwilling member of the College into a sexual relationship or to subject such a person to unwanted sexual attention, or to punish a refusal to comply or to create a sexually intimidatory, hostile or offensive environment.” It includes all forms of harassment from unpleasant remarks to sexual assault, and may include some of the following: repeated or unwanted verbal or physical abuse or advances, demands for sexual favours, compromising invitations, sexual assault and rape. Remember that men as well as women can be victims of sexual harassment and assault.

FINANCE www.tcdsu.org/finance

For those of you who are living away from home while at college, it will become clear very quickly that going to college costs sh*tloads of money. This is especially true of Dublin, where the cost of living is very high. However, you may be entitled to (a) a grant or (b) financial assistance.

Higher Education Grant You may be entitled to a Higher Education Grant, which are provided by local authori ties (County Councils, etc.). You should contact your local authority and ask if they will accept a late application, as the closing date is usually in August. Some Councils are more lenient than others in accepting late applicants. Information on who can apply for grants and grant rates can be found at www.tcdsu.org/finance

Financial Assistance This is not available to first years, repeat students, nonEU students or post grads. It is an internal College scheme and is run through the Senior Tutor’s Office. This is a small fund available for students in the direst of straits, however individual allowances are decided on a casebycase basis, so no guidelines are available on how to qualify. For further information contact Cormac in the Welfare Office!

Your Education. "D4

Education in College is a lot different to what you would be used to from 2nd level. Nobody is going to give out to you for turning up late to a lecture or not handing in an essay or assignment. You will experience new ways of learning such as going on placement, small group tutorials, laboratory classes, seminars and lecture theatres with hundreds of people. Your education is up to you now. College will expect you to dig deep and do some research into your subject rather than just rote learn a textbook, and to “actively engage” in learning. At times this can seem daunting and awfully lonely, but there is plenty of support and help out there if you know where to look. In this section you will find a brief guide to studying as an undergraduate. It is designed to give new students an idea of what it will be like to study in College and is intended to be a reference for continuing students. It will also fill you in on some of the changes happening in college this year. This is not the College Calendar. It does not cover everything that you might need to know. So, if you need any help during the year with anything academic related then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Education Officer. Ashley Cooke

LECTURES Lectures are the main form of teaching in College and range in size from 10 to 200 people. This is where the bulk of your course will be covered and as such it’s probably a good idea if you go to them. Don’t panic if you miss one though. Lecture notes are sometimes online and usually available from a classmate otherwise.

Try and get a hold of your lecture timetable as early as you can. They’re usually online or on departmental notice boards. Don’t be afraid if you don’t understand everything that goes on in a lecture and don’t be afraid to ask questions in a lecture, no matter how stupid you feel the question is. Chances are there is someone else in the room too nervous to ask the same question. For many First Year courses (and for some courses the whole way through) lectures have compulsory attendence, so make sure to find out if yours are compulsory.

TUTORIALS & SEMINARS These are designed to supplement the teaching done in lectures and are generally smaller. Sometimes tutorials are taught by Teaching Assistants (TAs) rather than lecturers. The idea is that tutorials deepen your knowledge by discussing course content or to solving problems related to your work.

Often, material covered in tutorials is quite similar to what might come up in your exams so it’s very important to take part in your tutorials. Ask questions on anything you don’t understand and prepare in advance.

"D/

PRACTICALS AND LABS Students in the faculties of Engineering, Mathematics & Science (EMS) and Health Sciences (HS) spend a lot of time on the practical application of material they’ve covered in lectures. Attendance is compulsory and often students have to write up detailed lab reports and in many courses all of the marks for any lab work will be awarded for the report. No matter if your lab involves dangerous chemicals or dull coding, there should be demonstrators on hand to help you.

Try and get your lab reports done and handed up on time. Having five or six reports to get done near the end of the year is no fun.

COURSEWORK Most students will have coursework to do during the year apart from exams. This work usually counts towards their overall mark for the year. Usually this work includes lab reports, essays, assignments or projects. They can be a pain to keep up with and tend to cut into your social life, but are great for getting big chunks of your marks early on and to keep up with the work rather than encountering lecture notes for the first time in April. Try not to leave all of your coursework until the night before the deadline. If you find something is unclear at that stage, it is often too late. If you have any questions about what is expected from you, then ask your lecturer.

Plagiarism, accidental or otherwise, is dealt with quite severely in College. Make sure that work you hand in is your own or is properly referenced.

STUDYING IN COLLEGE Studying in College is different to studying in secondary school. Often you will be expected to learn beyond what is found in the core textbook. STUDY ENVIRONMENT Everyone has a preferred place for studying. Some like to work in groups, some like to work alone, some work in the library while others will prefer to work at home. Try and find out early on what suits you.

The Library

The libraries in College are an excellent place to study and to have material available at your finger tips. There continues to be problems with opening 4#,9-*2,&*&4.*<&,3.(&->*h('#(*'-*%IF%a-*&9a'(H*&#*'KT9#;.*&4'-E Try not to make too much noise or have the mp3 player blaring in the library and be considerate of those studying around you, especially around exam time.

At Home

If you are studying at home make sure you have a private area to study. Having a flatmate chatting to you will probably result in you getting nothing done. 6%U.*-,9.*&4.*9##K*'-*F.II*I'&*%(3*;.(&'I%&.3*%(3*&4%&*&4.*9##K*'-(>&*&##*4#&*#9* too cold. DURING YOUR EXAMS The examination rules are available online, on your departmental notice board and may be explained by the invigilators, but essentially the main thing to know is that if you cheat you will be thrown out of College. Set ten alarm clocks if you have an early morning exam! Make sure you arrive with 15 minutes to spare. Use your time in the morning to relax and go to the bathroom, get a bottle of water, bring something warm to wear and make sure you have all you need. At the start of an exam, take the time to read through the whole paper. Even if you know your course inside out and think you know what the question is asking, read the question in detail. By the way, your exam number is on the bottom right hand side of your student card. Those guys walking around wearing black capes are called “invigilators”. They’re there to escort you to the bathroom and make sure that no one breaks the rules. They are there if you need assistance. If you draw a blank, don’t panic, drink some water, take a minute or two to compose yourself and ask your lecturer if something is confusing you. They are required to check in on the exam. If you have an emergency during the exam put your hand up and explain your situation to an invigilator. Your tutor will be contacted and they will try and help sort out your problem as quickly as possible.

EXAM LOCATIONS See the “Education” section of www.tcdsu.org for examination venues.

EXAMINATION RESULTS Results should be available online several weeks after examinations end. They are also put on departmental notice boards and a breakdown can be requested if you contact your tutor or your department office. In College, a grade of 70% is considered excellent. This is quite different from the C1 you would get in the leaving cert! The reason for this is that College exams are designed to test your knowledge of your course, rather than your ability to memorise. That’s the idea anyway. Note that if you have to pay fees your examination results will not be published or available to you until you pay your fees.

*EMS faculty grades are the same except that F1 = 35%39% and F2 = 30%34%, F3 = 0%29%. †Even if you do ok in an exam, you can still get a grade of NS. This generally happens in cases of extremely low attendance in lectures, tutorials or coursework not being presented. A NonSatisfactory grade could force you to repeat the year, so if you have a valid excuse for absence, make sure your lecturer and tutor are aware of it.

"D2

IF YOU FAIL YOUR EXAMS... If the worst comes to worst and you fail an exam there are a number of things that can be done. Your exam script should be available to be viewed with your tutor up to a year after the exam.

Compensation Sometimes if your average mark was good and you only failed one or two papers with an F1 you may be allowed to compensate and go onto the next year as if you had passed. The rules for this vary from school to school.

Supplemental Examinations You may be required to sit supplemental (repeat) exams if you fail and cannot compensate. These are not offered to students if the exams they failed counted towards their degree, except in very special circumstances. They are usually on in September.

Appeals If you feel that your result is unfair or marks were added up wrong you can apply to have them rechecked or remarked. If you are still not satisfied with your grade after that you can seek an Academic Appeal. There are rules for this, but are generally on grounds of extenuating circumstances. Email the Education Officer or tutor for clarification.

Repeating a year If you cannot appeal then sometimes the only choice is to repeat the year. Students can also apply in certain circumstances, to repeat off books. Keep in mind that you will not qualify for free fees if you have to repeat, except in special circumstances.

Ordinary Degree There are cases, with honour degrees, when a student has completed most of their degree but doesn’t finish, sit or pass their finals. In these cases a student may be permitted to graduate with an ordinary degree.

SCHOLS One of Trinity’s oldest and proudest traditions is that of Foundation Scholarship. In essence, Schols are extra examinations that students apply to take, usually in their second year to become a scholar. The idea is that it encourages Trinity’s brightest students to remain in the College after their undergraduate degree. Being a scholar has many entitlements. Scholars get free campus accommodation for five years and get a free daily dinner called commons, along with free postgraduate fees once they graduate and a small wage every year. Scholars can also put Sch. after their names. Scholars can intermit a year of their scholarship if they decide to leave the College for a year. Scholars should contact their tutor for advice if they want to do this. The Scholar’s Committee also acts as a source of information for Scholars and potential Scholars. www.tcdlife.ie/scholars The top 70 scholars are known as Foundation Scholars, who are part of the College corporation. An extra level of specialness!

If you have any desire at all to do Schols it would be advisable to give it a shot. Even if you don’t get Schols it’s a great way to prepare for your annual examinations.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF UNIVERSITY Going Abroad Studying abroad can be a great experience. Get in touch with the SU International Officer, Ryan, at international@tcdsu.org for a list of Socrates/Erasmus coordinators, your School or the Office of International Student Affairs for more information. Generally, students in their second or third years avail of this. Going abroad may affect your examination regulations so find out all the information you can first. Up Skilling The Careers Advisory Service runs seminars such as “Interview skills” and “CV Writing”. Look out for Library and IS Services orientation events to upskill. Broad Curriculum With the new year structure, College hopes that more students will take the opportunity to expand their learning. Broad Curriculum allows students to study something that is very different from their regular course of study. There are many options for students. Contact your school and see http://www.tcd.ie/Broad_Curriculum/ for more information. Extra Mural & Language Modules Many schools allow you to substitute a module you would normally take for an opportunity to learn or improve upon your language skills. Extra Mural courses, or evening language courses, allow for students to take a language outside of their degree and courses offered are broad in range. Students do not get academic credit for extra mural courses. For more information please see http://www.tcd.ie/courses/extramural/subjectarea/

HELP AND SUPPORT Studying in third level can be difficult. Here is some of the help available to you.

Students’ Union The Students’ Union works for you and your education. If at any stage during your degree you have any academic problems whatsoever please contact education@tcdsu.org for assistance. Your class reps should also do their best to help with any problems your class might encounter. Do ask them if you need help!

Your Tutor Your tutor will act as your advocate in College should you ever need it. As a rule of thumb, if you need help with something, then contact your tutor and they should be available to help. It is a confidential service and you can also change your tutor at any time, no questions asked! Do keep your tutor informed!

Learning Support & Development There are many services operated by Student Learning Services. They run academic workshops, give oneonone support for essays, reading etc. and can also screen students for specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dyscalculia and provide support.

Study Skills The Student Counselling Service offers a lot of useful information on how to deal with difficulties in studying. You will get emails from them regularly. Check them and see if any of it is for you!

Computer and Information Services For any problems that arise with the computer services or the College network you can call into IS Services in Áras an Phiarsaigh or email helpdesk@tcd.ie for help.

RESTRUCTURING It used to be the case that words like restructuring, modularisation and semesterisation were bandied about in conversation without any real effect on the average student. However, this year students will see some very real changes to their life in College. For the past few years Trinity has spent a huge amount of time and resources restructuring the College from the old traditional structure into a more modern version of a University. The goal of this is for Trinity to become more competi tive and to bring it in line with Universities all over Europe and the rest of the world. Some of the changes that have happened over the past few years have included a move to a three faculty structure and having your school as the primary academic unit for teaching your course. This seems to have worked without too much knock on effects to students’ courses. However, some problems remain, such as student representation on various committees and confusion about the role of some staff. You will notice your courses are divided up into ETCS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) usually in multiples of 5 and these basically act as a standard for comparing performance and attainment in academic institutions across Europe. This should help students going abroad for a year. To find out all about how College is organised and run see http://www.tcd.ie/local/structures/index.php

There are going to be some very big changes to College this year. For continuing students, here is a very quick and simplified guide as to what changes to expect. New students should realise that College is going through quite radical changes and should expect some initial confusion.

"5!

NEW YEAR STRUCTURE AND WHAT TO EXPECT... Calendar You will now find that instead of three terms, there are now two teaching terms, each 12 weeks long. There will no longer be a three week break in March as you may be used to. Students will start back slightly earlier and finish their annual exams earlier.

Study Weeks Trinity has introduced study weeks that should take place in the weeks starting the 9th of November and the week starting the 1st of March. These weeks are designed for students to read up on course material. Unless your course is professionally accredited you should have two study weeks. Courses are allowed to continue some form of continuous assessment. However, if you feel you have not been given time to read up on your course during these weeks, please contact the Education Officer at education@tcdsu.org. The Students’ Union can only fight for you if it knows what’s happening!

No Christmas Examinations Unlike the UCD model, there will be no examinations at Christmas time. Some courses do have “class tests” at Christmas but these should be a much smaller affair than the annual exams and should definitely not be worth as much credit.

Broad Curriculum All courses in College, with the exception of some accredited courses, should allow for students to take Broad Curriculum courses at some stage during their degree. If you feel that you are not being given this opportunity then let the Students’ Union know.

Teaching Split between Terms You should have an even split of workload and ECTS credits between the first and second teaching terms. Some schools may try their best and deviate from this. Again, please email the Students’ Union if this happens and they can kick up a fuss on your behalf!

1%$$/#H*2)"(#,*<(C3/# Bus You might not think so when you’re standing waiting at the bus stop in the rain for half an hour, but comparatively speaking Dublin’s bus system is very good. All areas are covered and all main arteries are serviced quite frequently all day. Bus fares start at 50c for short hops around the city centre. The fare for most journeys is €1.60. If you will be taking the bus regularly you can avail of student rates by purchasing a Student Travelcard in the SU Front Office in House 6 and buying a Student monthly ticket (available strangely enough, in the SU Shop) The Last bus usually leaves the city centre at 11:30. Detailed info on routes and timetables are available online at www.dublinbus.ie Dart The Dart runs along the coast from Greystones in the south to Howth and Malahide in the north. The nearest stations to college are Pearse Station beside Goldsmith Hall and Tara Street Station on the Quays. Fares start at €1.50 and trains run roughly every ten minutes. The last trains leave Bray and Howth at midnight and terminate in Pearse and Connolly respectively. Luas Dublin has two Luas (tram) lines; the Red line from Connolly Station to Tallaght and the Green Line from St Stephen’s Green to Sandyford. The Red line stops at both of Trinity’s teaching hospitals, St James’ and Tallaght as well as Heuston Station. The green line goes to Trinity Hall and the Dundrum shopping centre. Fares start at €1.60 but with your Student Travelcard you can get student weekly or monthly tickets which are much better value. Cycling Cycling is a healthy and environmentally friendly way to get to and from college, if you are prepared to brave the busy streets of the city centre. Cycle lanes are in place on many major routes around the city. If you chose to cycle congested streets of Dublin be sure to wear a helmet. Bicycle parking facilities are available around campus but be sure to get a good, strong lock! Walking Walking is another obvious and environmentally friendly way to get around town. You don’t need a guidebook to tell you if you are within walking distance of the college. Try it some time, and see how you get on.

1%$$/#H*J"6%*2$*#/HJ$ After a night out on the town, it’s important to remember how to get home. Most nightclubs close at around 2.30am, dumping all their patrons out onto the street. Here’s a quick guide on how to get home after a night out Taxi Taxis are the quickest and easiest way to get home after a night out on the town. It’s usually quite easy to get a taxi in Dublin city centre at night, but there can be long queues at taxi ranks at the weekend. Be warned - many taxi drivers will not stop for people who are visibly drunk. A taxi from town to Trinity Hall should cost no more than €12. Night-Bus Taxis are quite expensive, especially if you’ve spent all your money on drink. The night-bus, a late night bus service provided by Ents is another more affordable option, They also tend to be a good fun, as you’re getting a bus home with a load of your peers. The Service is in its first year and is still very limited. Buses leave at 3am from outside college Tuesday to Thursday and tickets cost €5. For more information on routes visit www.TrinityEnts.com. On Friday and Saturday Dublin Bus run the nightlink service. See www.Dublinbus.ie for more information Walking Walking home at night should always be a last resort. If you’ve absolutely no money, you’ve missed the last night bus and you cant afford a taxi, then, maybe, walk home. Dublin is a big city, and like all big cities it isn’t really safe at night. Avoid walking alone, make sure you know the area well, and stay to well lit streets. Again LAST RESORT!
