KAMPALA CITY

1.2. BRIEF HISTORY OF UGANDA The History of Uganda is divided into 2 periods: Pre and Post Independence. Uganda’s population is composed of several ethnic groups (Bantu, Nilotics, and Nilo hamites). In the old days, leadership was in the hands of hereditary Kings. In the 1830s Arab traders and Europeans moved into Uganda with various interests. After World War 2, veterans and patriots from all corners of the country convened a rally with the objective of attaining independence. In 1962 Uganda gained Independence from the British after the alliance between Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Kabaka Yekka (KY). The Buganda Kabaka (King) Edward Muteesa II was elected as a ceremonial president. In I966, UPC dominated parliament and Milton Obote was elected the executive President. Uganda was then declared a republican state. After a military coup in 1971, Obote was over thrown by Idi Amin. Amin ruled Uganda with the military for the next eight years. Amin’s reign was ended after the Uganda-Tanzania War in 1979 in which Tanzanian forces aided by Ugandan exiles invaded Uganda. This led to the return of Obote, who was deposed in 1985 by General Tito Okello. Okello ruled for six months until he was deposed by the National Resistance Army (NRA) operating under the leadership of the current President, H.E Gen. Yoweri Museveni. POLITICAL REGIME: Republic State HEAD OF STATE: H.E Gen. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. CAPITAL: Kampala ORGANIZATION OF THE STATE: Uganda operates under a decentralized local government system with the local

government unit being district. The district is composed of units that rank from county, sub- county to Village/LC 1. OFFICIAL LANGUAGE: English and Swahili NATIONAL HOLIDAY: 9th October CURRENCY: Ugandan Shillings POPULATION: 41,332,711 (countrymeters.info)

1.3. UGANDAN INSTITUTIONS There are 3 major institutions namely: The Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary. The Executive is headed by the President who is both the head of state and government. The President appoints the Vice President and the Prime Minister, who work hand in hand with him. The State house t: 041 423 1900 w: www.statehouse.go.ug e: info@statehouse.go.ug The parliament is headed by the Speaker. Currently the Parliament of Uganda has 332 members.

1.4. BRIEF HISTORY OF EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY Like it is in other continents, African states have joined hands to form regional integrations. The East African community pledges to develop policies that support the community so to have a prosperous, competitive, secure, stable and politically united East Africa. It all began in 1900, when Mombasa established as a customs center for Uganda. In 1905 a currency board was then set up to issue currency for Kenya and Uganda. The 1917 customs union established between Kenya and Uganda welcomed Tanganyinka (Tanzania) on board in 1922. The high commission was established in 1984. In 1961 common service organization established with various services forinstance the East African Development bank, railways and Harbours, posts and Telecommunication, East African Airways, East African Civil Aviation. In 1967 the first treaty was signed between Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika (Tanzania) establishing the community. The community had a few challenges that led to its collapse in 1977. One of the tools to the challenges in the community

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2015

13

KAMPALA CITY was division of assets and liabilities. On the 30 November 1999, the treaty re-establishing the E.A community was then signed. Today’s East African Community has 5 countries: the 3 founding countries which now includes Rwanda and Burundi.

THE EAST AFRICAN INSTITUTIONS The East African Community has 4 institutions, each with a specific role: The Customs Union: Countries remove tariffs and other barriers on the movement of goods originated from among member states. Common Market: Member states come together to trade hence creating a bigger consumer base for their products and services Monetary Union: States agree on a single currency with the common market. (Directed in 2012 though not implemented yet) Political Federation: States form a super state under a single political Authority.

Where customary marriages are celebrated to the rites of an African community and one of the parties is a member to that community, they should be registered with the Sub County or town clerk of their respective marriage districts. Monogamous marriages under the marriage act can only be celebrated in the office of the registrar or a licensed building of a place of worship belonging to a church, denomination or body. Every marriage celebrant or registrar at the districts, Churches, Mosques and Temples must remit revenue and file returns for all marriages celebrated or registered at the end of each month to the Registrar General at URSB.

Fees payable: Filing notice of Marriage: 10,000 UGX Registration of the Marriage (including registration of the certificate): 25,000 UGX Foreign vote: Voting is only open to Nationals You can vote by proxy at your respective embassy in Uganda.

2.2. INSURANCE WHICH IS THE INSURANCE LEGALLY REQUIRED IN UGANDA? • Motor Third Party Insurance (MTP) • Workers Compensation Insurance (WC) CAR INSURANCE Comprehensive Motor Cover Motor or Vehicle Insurance is designed to cater to the particular needs of the different vehicles on the road and the particular needs of the vehicle owner. Motor Third Party Insurance (MTP) compensates and protects road users who may be injured or killed by a vehicle. As a statutory insurance, the limits are set by Law and the compensation amounts are preset. According to the current rates, the maximum amount of compensation you will get as an accident victim is 1,000,000 UGX with an aggregate per accident of 10,000,000 UGX from this insurance. In Uganda, it is illegal for you to operate a vehicle (including motorbikes) without the minimum statutory cover. Third Party Fire and Theft Insurance (TPFT) includes the basic MTP cover and also covers loss or damage to the vehicle if it is (i) damaged by fire, lightning or an explosion, (ii) damaged either during an attempted theft or while it is stolen, and (iii) if it is stolen but not recovered. Comprehensive Insurance is the widest motor insurance cover you can have as it covers fire to the vehicle, accidents or damage to the vehicle, motor third party (bodily injury and property damage), motor accessories and replacement of spare parts. Its premiums are much higher than the other two covers discussed due to the added benefits in case of an accident. If you would like to enjoy extra benefits like the Personal Accident, Political Violence Terrorism and Sabotage extensions, additional premium will be charged as well as statutory obligations. Workers compensation / Employer’s liability Workers Compensation (WC) is a compulsory insurance that is applicable to all employees in Uganda (whether formally or informally employed) who might be accidentally injured, die or acquire an occupational disease while on duty at work. In the case of bodily injuries, this cover will only apply if the employee is on their way directly to work, at work or on their way directly home after work. In a domestic setting, WC would cover domestic staff who might suffer accidental work related bodily injuries. The option to upgrade to the Group Personal Accident (GPA) cover which offers the employee more protection is also available. The GPA includes WC and covers the employee worldwide 24/7 and therefore does not limit the benefit to the limitations mentioned in WC. GPA can also be extended to Group Life making it possible for the Insured to be compensated in respect of claims logged due to natural death. Domestic Insurance A Domestic Insurance package provides the widest cover required for a home, its content, owners, legal liability and domestic staff. Through its various sections, it will cover fire to the building, household contents (that do not leave the premises), personal effects which are portable like mobile phones, laptops, etc. Workers Compensation and legal liability to the occupants (either the landlord or the tenants). Public Liability Insurance Public Liability insurance covers the legal liabilities against the insured person or corporate body arising from the public. In taking this policy, you will be required to give estimated amounts which the insurance company will pay in the event of a claim or loss. These amounts are commonly referred to as Limits of Liability. You can estimate the maximum Limit of Liability on one event and maximum Limit of Liability in aggregate (total claims payable per year).

LIFE INSURANCE Life assurance is a contract between an insurance policy holder and an insurer, where the insurer promises to pay a designated beneficiary a sum of money (the “benefits”) upon the death of the insured person. Depending on the contract, other events such as terminal illness or critical illness may also trigger payment. Major categorizations of life-based contracts include: 1. Protection policies which are designed to provide a benefit in the event of specified event. Typically this would be a lump sum payment. A common form of this design is term insurance. 2. Investment policies are designed to facilitate the growth of capital by regular or single premiums.

This is like an informal training course, along with other prospective and adoptive parents, that will give you an insight into what adoption means today. It provides an opportunity for you to network fellow prospective and adoptive parents and hear more about their experiences. They are also there to help you learn about childrens needs from an adoptive family as well as explore what you are able to offer. 3.You are assessed Every prospective adopter has to go through a formal assessment process. Your assigned social worker will be responsible for this, including a home study. They will visit you at your home to discuss reasons for adoption, the kind of child you would best be able to care for, and your overall suitability. References will be required and checks will

5. Being linked with a child Once you are approved, we will do our best to link you to a child that best suits your needs. This can often take some time and requires patience from you as a prospective adoptive parent. 6. A match is made Once a link is made between you and a particular child, or children, you will be given background information about the child(ren). This includes a history of their early years, why the child came into care, the child’s characteristics, and any particular needs they may have. 7. Meeting your child Once the match has been approved, introductions to the child can finally begin! These will be planned by the social worker, the carer who is looking after the child, and you. This gives you the chance to bond with them before they move in. This will include visiting the child at our Babies Home, fun outings, home visits, as well as overnight stays. Gradually, you and the child will get to know each other, and soon the child

will be able to move in with you. 8. Moving in An exciting and a daunting time for all concerned! Moving in can be stressful at the best of times, so it doesn’t take much to imagine the mix of emotions that this could evoke when you are able to bring your child home for the first time. Most importantly, it marks the beginning of your life together as a family. Your Social Worker will visit regularly during the three year pre-adoptive fostering period. 9. Making the adoption legal An adoption is made legal only after completion the preadoption fostering period as required by the Ugandan Law. This is done by the making of an adoption order in court, which is done either in the Magistrates or High Court. This finally means that you are the legal parent of the child and the child is entitled to an inheritance for being family. That day will mark a paramount occasion in your lives. 10. Your life together Like any other family, you will enjoy watching your child grow and develop. Also like any other family, there are bound to be ups and downs! Adoption support is available to see you through our Prospective and Adoptive parents events and trainings. Visit our website at www.ugandansadopt.ug our Ugandans Adopt Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ UgandansAdopt or by following us on Twitter at @ugandansadopt. To rent/lease there is always an agreement drawn between the lessor (owner / caretaker) and a tenant relating to occupying the building, subject to payment of rent. This does not necessary occur over a written agreement, though it’s recommended to have one drawn up. Furnished properties usually have furniture, crockery and does not normally include linen, etc. Ask for an inventory as this will help you in the event of a dispute. The majority of unfurnished properties include kitchen appliances, but not curtain rails, carpets and lighting appliances. After identifying the property and inspecting it to ensure that it meets your standards; you are advised, as a first time resident, to preferably engage the services of a lawyer. The landlord will be expected to provide you with a copy of the title deed and identification documents. The first time resident should provide a copy of his/her passport, photographs of both parties (landlord/lessee) and will be required to sign a copy of the lease agreement. Estimate rental: Bugolobi is between $600 - $6000, Kololo – Naguru and Munyonyo is between $2500$3500, Ggaba Road is $1200 – $1500, Mbuya is $1500 and Ntinda $500 ( estimates) For more information check with: Home Hippo: Mackenzie Vale Road, Kololo, t: 070 512 6526 or 075 012 6526 w: www.homehippo.ug True Level: t: 075 263 1526 / 077 601 5777 Lamudi: B3 Corner House 436 Mawanda Road t: 078 407 0350 w:www.lamudi.co.ug Registering the lease For first residence lease there is need for the landlord to register the lease with the relevant tax authority after it has been signed by both parties (landlord/tenant). BIRDS I

Surely the most celebrated technical challenge in photography, especially for keen birders, must be that of capturing crisp images of birds in flight. Even though I personally find static portrait shots of birds at rest to be just as pleasing aesthetically, there is no doubting the dynamic power of a well-executed flight shot in the mind of the typical viewer. Birds are, after all, a dominant feature of any safari within Uganda, so in some sense the flight shot might be said to more fully capture the essence of the living bird. One of the most important traits is patience, and lots of it! You may often photograph an entire day and not get one usable image. In most cases there is some luck involved to being in the right place at the right time, but specialist skill and the right guidance goes a long way to ensure these sought after images are captured and immediately make an impact. Premier Safaris, known for their unique specialist safaris, has finally released their new photographic itinerary as an alternative to their widely published primate focused trip. And you guessed it, this one is more budget friendly and focuses on Uganda’s birds and critters. As with their other photographic trips this one will also be led by specialist in their field. In this case Sherry Mckelvie, one of the authors of “Birds Of Uganda” will be your photographic guide, assisted by Johnny Kamugisha, as the specialist birding guide. Combined this duo are sure to provide the participants with an amazing learning experience, while providing some of those once in a lifetime shots as well.

Premier Safaris’ General Manager, Corné Schalkwyk, gave us some tips on how to get that elusive birding shot, which is one of the elements that will be discussed during one of these trips. Sherry will assist participants to ensure they concentrate on

their composition, ensuring lots of negative space on the side of the frame, in the direction that the bird is traveling, this is known as the rule of thirds. Participants will also learn to adjust their elevation while going through the necessary adjustments needed on your camera’s settings. A sharp aperture, and a fast shutter speed goes a long way when you’re photographing birds in flight.

This new budget friendly trip is ideal for our local expat community that have always wanted to sharpen their photographic skills, and the critters section is sure to assist with improving your macro photography as well. This is why we partnered with Premier Safaris to advise on a panel of judges for our photographic competition. We are also offering great discounts to book your spot on this safari if you book directly with the Expats In Uganda Guide.

Amateur Photography Competition 2015 ACCOMMODATION

Our amateur photography competition is here! This year we are going to be kicking it up a notch. We have categories, we have judges, we have sponsors, and yes, there are prizes involved too. The categories are Wildlife/Nature, Landscapes/ Scenery and Urban/Cultural. Our panel of independent judges will select a category winner for each category and out of those three, one person will be our overall winner. All the legal and important stuff is on the next page, we are keeping the fun on this page.

meet our judges: BrinaMcNurlin Bunt Photography has evoked a juggernaut of emotion within me, which is where my passion for this art began. Since that first experience of reliving an exciting moment, or knowing that I captured it, I have been incessantly attempting to photograph my journey. I use photography to see beauty in the world around me, to make sense of the insensible, and to find tranquility in a world of chaos. Photography provides an opportunity to bring light to dark parts of the world by capturing beautiful moments in the most unsuspecting places. It can be used by the artist as a way to educate, to elicit passion and excitement, and to provide a sense of harmony in a world we may not always understand.

Mark Dudley I had enjoyed photography since 2005, but I didn’t take it seriously until 2010, when I read an article about macro photography by fellow judge, Sherry McKelvie. Whilst my initial interest was in macro/ micro photography, in the last year I have taken a lot of images of birds. I have written several articles and run a successful Facebook page. I love that photography gets me out in to the wild and I am never more content than when observing nature, camera in hand.

Sherry McKelvie Sherry is a businesswoman running her own construction and generator business in Kampala, where she has been living for 24 years. Married, with two sons and four grandchildren, she loves to photograph birds and other wildlife in her spare time. Her garden, on the edge of a papyrus swamp, is constantly twittering with birds, as is their family cottage on Bulago Island in Lake Victoria. She is a member of Uganda Safari Guides Association and the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre. She is also the author of the new “Birds In Uganda” guide.

Judd Irish Bradley New Mexico photographer Judd Irish Bradley feels most at home behind the lens of a camera. His passion lies with his love of fast music, quirky angles, and beautiful landscapes, all of which are evident in his traditional and digital fine art photographs. Although a professional photographer since 1993, Judd has been working in his photography studio in the town of Truth or Consequences, NM since the year 2000. He closed the storefront in 2014 to explore new opportunities overseas. Judd always has a camera by his side and loves incorporating his love of music and travel by working with touring bands and exploring whatever country he is currently residing in.

Matthias Mugisha Matthias Mugisha got his first inspiration in photography when his father gave him a camera as birthday gift. In 1996, he joined a lifestyle magazine called Chick before joining the New Vision two years later as a press photographer and travel writer. He is the photographer behind Uganda’s first comprehensive online tourism catalogue, and was also the main photographer for the new ‘Uganda Wildlife Authority’, website. He has published numerous stories and documentaries for international and national institutions and was the Ugandan co-ordinator for UK’s Channel 4 and Discovery Channel’s “Walking The Nile” by British adventurer Levison Wood.

Peter Hogel I have lived in East Africa for the past four years, guiding and doing wildlife photography in Tanzania and Uganda. I have had a lifelong interest in nature and wildlife, insects being my specialty, combined with macro photography. Being in nature, studying, observing and enjoying has grown a profound love to wildlife photography and into guiding. “I´ve been a professional photographer for 30 years, based in Sweden, I have traveled the world but settled down here in Uganda”.

• An Account Opening Form needs to be filled in at the preferred bank. After verification, the bank will create an account in the banking system which is then passed on to you. Transactions can be conducted over the counter or by an ATM by using your Visa card.

5.3. MOBILE MONEY Mobile Money is developing at a high rate due to the element of convenience, safety, quick money transfer. All four prominent telecom companies have dealers in and around Kampala (Airtel money, MTN mobile Money, M-Pesa) It is mandatory for every dealer to always have a chart displayed, indicating transaction costs. Mobile Money is more expensive compared to banking charges, but you can directly pay your utility bills with your Mobile Money Account without having to wait for it.

5.5. TAXATION

Taxation in Uganda has been mandated to a central Government semi-autonomous body – Uganda Revenue Authority and apparently, there are a number of laws through which residents and nonresidents are taxed. These among others include: • Income Tax Act (ITA) • The Value Added Tax Act (VAT) • Stamps Act • The Traffic and Road Safety Act • East African Community Customs Management Act (imports and exports) A resident individual is a person who has a permanent home in Uganda; or is present in Uganda for a period of 183 days or more in any twelve months period that commences or ends during the year of income; or during the year of income and in each preceding two years of income, the individual is present for periods averaging to 122 days in each of such years; or is an employee or official of the Government of Uganda posted abroad during the year of income. A non-resident is therefore the opposite of a resident. A resident company is one which is incorporated in Uganda under the laws of Uganda and is managed or controlled in Uganda at any time during the year of income and undertakes majority of its operations in Uganda during the year of income. A resident partnership is one where any of the partners was a resident person in Uganda during the year of income.

SUMMARY OF RATES THAT APPLY TO VARIOUS DOMESTIC TAX TYPES Income Tax is imposed on a person’s taxable income at specific rates. A person under the ITA include: an individual, a company, partnership, trustee, government and subdivision of government. Income Tax is charged to every person who has a chargeable income (comprising business, employment and property) for each year of income. Chargeable Income is the GROSS INCOME of a person for the year of income less total deductions allowed under the ITA while Gross Income is the total amount of business, employment and property income other than exempt income. There are two categories of persons under the ITA, Resident and non-residents. A. Corporate Income Tax • Resident and Non Resident Companies – 30% of profits after deducting expenses • Mining Companies – Ranges between 25% and 45% of profits • Trustee Companies – 30% of Income • Retirement Fund – 30% of income • Branches are taxed at 30% and there is an additional tax of 15% which effectively applies to profits repatriated to head office

B. Withholding Tax i) Professional fees • Residents A resident person who pays management or professional fees to a resident professional is required to withhold tax at a rate of 6% of the gross payment. • Non residents Withholding tax is imposed on every non-resident person deriving an income under a Ugandan source or service contract. This is a contract under which the principle purpose is the performance of services which gives rise to income is sourced in Uganda, and any goods supplied under the contract are only incidental to the purpose. A Ugandan sourced service contract does not include an employment contract. The tax is charged at a rate of 15% of the gross amount of any payment to the non-resident under the Ugandan sourced service contract. Any person who enters into any service contract with a non-resident is required, within 30 days of entering into the contract, to notify the Commissioner of the nature and duration of the service contract, and disclose the particulars of the non-resident to whom the payment is to be made, as well as the full contract value. Basing on this, the Commissioner may require the payer to withhold the relevant tax at a rate specified in the Commissioner’s notice ii) Interest payments A resident person who pays interest to another resident person is required to withhold tax at 15% of the gross amount of the interest paid. This withholding tax is not applicable where interest is paid by a natural person, interest, other than interest from government securities, paid to a financial institution, interest is paid by a company to an associated company or interest paid is exempt from tax in the hands of the recipient. iii) Dividends A resident Company which pays a dividend to a resident shareholder is required to withhold tax at 15% of the gross amount of the dividend paid, except where the dividend income is exempt from tax in the hands of the shareholder. Where the shareholder is a natural person (resident individual), the tax withheld on such dividend income is final. iv) International payments Tax is imposed on every non-resident person who derives any dividend, interest, royalty, rent, natural resource payment or management charge from sources in Uganda. The tax is withheld by the payer at a rate of 15% of the gross amount before payment/remittance of the amount is made. However interest paid abroad by a resident person is exempt from tax if: • Borrowing is through debentures which were widely issued for purposes of raising loan capital to carry out business in Uganda • Borrowing is made from a financial Institution of a public character v) Non Resident entertainers or sports persons Tax is imposed on the income derived in Uganda by every non-resident entertainer, sports person, or theatrical, musical or other related groups of entertainers. The tax is charged at a rate of 15% of the gross amount of the remuneration derived by the public entertainer/sports person. Where the tax is levied on a group, every member of the group is jointly and severally liable for payment of the tax.

GOOD TO KNOW ADVENTURE FOR CHILDREN Wildlife experiences hosted at Mihingo lodge often take the children of guests out for a couple of hours into the bush to learn tracks and signs of the wild as well as learning how to make some traps and fish. It gives both the kids an intimate bush experience as well as affording parents a few hours of peace! On the longer school trips the kids will be camping, help out with the cooking of their meals and take part in numerous activities such as game, drives, bush walks, tree identification, how to find north, star, gazing and even

learning about horses and horse care at our stables. Open to different age groups and sizes. So far each trip has been a huge success in educating about the environment and getting kids out of towns, away from ipods and TV’s. 8.1 THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN UGANDA English is the basic language of education used in Kampala schools. In addition schools complement this with Swahili and French. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM Nursery schools: From the age of 3 to 5. This level is not compulsory but recommended by education experts. This is more like kindergarten. All nursery schools in Kampala are privately owned. Primary schools: From the age of 6 to 12. Primary schools are both private and Government owned. There are 81 Government owned primary schools. Secondary schools: From the age of 12 to 18. This level is categorized into O-level (a cycle of 4 years) and A- level (A cycle of 2 years). Secondary schools are both private and government owned. University: There are a range of universities in and around Kampala, both government and privately owned, some with religious affiliations. Also technical colleges, all of which can easily be found on the internet. Courses last between 3 - 5 years.

8.2 SCHOOLS USING MONTESSORI METHODS

Schools using the Montessori method Montessori education follows the principles of an Italian physician, Maria Montessori. She believed in human development through freedom of choice within limits, in a discovery-type situation rather than by formal instruction, in mixed age classrooms. This method only works really well with a Montessori trained teacher. Although new to Uganda, Montessori primary schools have been established for many years in Europe and America. How to find the perfect gift

60

EDUCATION

By Jonothan Hen-Boisen Choosing the perfect gift for your partner is no easy task, you only have to look at the sight that bestows every shopping mall especially during the festive period of people, particularly the male of our species walking around with a glazed expression on their faces. As the time gets nearer to Christmas, this glazed expression is replaced by one of shear panic and horror as they realize they haven’t a clue what to buy. This behaviour invariably leads to the panic buy or an unimaginative gift. A recent survey found that men’s tempers increased along with their heart rate. 48% of men regard it as worse than the stress of being dumped by their girlfriend, losing their job or moving home. Life events that cause the most stress include divorce, being fired and moving home, but, many men are placing shopping for gifts high on that list, only a short way behind the stress of a divorce. The main things that increased male shoppers’ stress levels included: • dawdlers that get in their way (86%) • having to walk around the shops carrying heavy bags(90%) • rude shoppers or shop assistants (83%) • other peoples’ screaming children (76%) • queue jumpers (74%) So how do you go about choosing the perfect gift? Gifts are not always judged by how much they cost. You can spend a fortune on a gift, but if the item is of no personal value to the recipient then it will not be considered with its true value. The best gifts to receive are ones which have had a lot of thought put into them.

Interests

What is the person you are buying for interested in? Think of their hobbies or interests.

Personality

likes and dislikes on choices of books, music etc. Write them down! It’s easy to forget when the time approaches to buy the gift. Do they collect things ? If they do it is easy to buy things which follow their chosen theme.

Inspiration from the web

These days it is so much easier and quicker to browse and buy from the internet. You can search for inspiration much more quickly than trailing around the shopping mall. Remember to allow time for delivery or items which may be unexpectedly be out of stock. The internet is also a good guide to what are this year’s fashionable “must haves”. If you follow these rules shopping should not be so stressful and Christmas morning may result in grateful thanks instead of world war 3 or another trip to the shops on boxing day to exchange all those unsuitable gifts. The worst gifts to give are:

For Him • • • • • • • • • •

For Her •

What sort of personality are they? It’s no use buying an adrenalin rushing Bungee jump experience if they are total couch potatoes.

• • • •

Price Range

What is the minimum and maximum you want to spend on them? If you see them on a regular basis, listen to what they are saying throughout the year. people will always discuss

Socks Cheap aftershave or facial care products (especially if he has a beard!) Underwear (Y fronts or underwear with cartoon characters on them) Gift vouchers Cheap bottle of wine Sports shirts with the wrong team on Walking stick Anything knitted by an elderly relative Chris de Burgh or Michael Bolton CD Viagra!

• •

Domestic appliances. (Remember that electrical can opener may not seem such a good idea on Christmas morning.) Tasteless Saucy underwear (Especially anything Red) Gift Vouchers Tights Weight loss book (unless she has specifically asked for it) Gadgets or DIY Tools (especially ones you want yourself - “oh well never mind darling I can find a use for it”) Flowers from your local garage Facial hair trimmer

Khana Kazana is your little piece of India right here in Kampala. The interior is decorated like and Indian palace and tables are elaborately decorated for you to have a meal fit for the Gods. We decided we cannot go Indian without having Murg malai kalirnirch which is chicken cubes marinated with fresh cream, yoghurt and mild spices cooked in tandoori, served with a side dish of Subzi pulao (vegetable rice). We also recommend trying the Balti Gosht that is made with diced mutton that is cooked in a special Punjabi way. The menu is filled with an assortment of irresistible Indian Dishes such as Mutton roganjosh, Reshmi paneer (cottage cheese), Kadai murg begum bahar (chicken), amongst others with a big selection of side dishes ranging from pulao to naan and rotis. The ambience is very tranquil and works perfect for either an intimate dinner, a business meeting or even a group outing, but whichever you choose, you best be sure to make a booking because Khana Kazana fills up very quick!

decided that new branding deserves new ideas. We teamed up with YujoIzakaya’s chef, Alan, and General Manager, Hanif, to come up with two new dishes for the festive season. The Hunter’s Roll will not be like any roll you’ve ever tasted before! Instead of the usual selections, this roll will have tempura turkey, apple slices, avocado and spring onion shavings that will be topped with a cranberry sauce. Each piece will make your taste buds sing like never before. The Pilgrim Donburi consists of lightly sauced white rice topped with fried turkey, pumpkin, spring onion and black sesame seeds with a cranberry rimmed bowl. If you are a fan of ramenstyled dishes, this comfort food will be a winner. Both the Hunter’s Roll and the Pilgrim Donburi will be sold at 30 000UGX per dish.

ACTIVITIES IN NORTHERN UGANDA

Murchison Falls Protected Area covers a range of over 4500 km². The wandering herds of elephants and towering Borassus Palms make it a stunning landscape. No visit to Murchison is complete without the (three hour) boat trip to the bottom of the Falls, where you will see huge Nile crocodiles, hippos and 100s of birds, including brightly-coloured Beeeaters, Spoonbills and – if you’re lucky – the rare and prehistoric-looking Shoebill. An Environmentally Friendly Break in Mafuga Forest Green Environment Promotions is a community organisation started eight years ago in Kanungu District, by a determined Ugandan lady Evelyne Ninsiima. There is a small lodge with 3 double rooms in Bushere village. You need to arrive with comfortable walking shoes, a torch and phone fully charged. Interacting with the community is a fascinating part of the experience, visiting a local homestead, enjoy the forest walks learning about traditional medicinal plants, as you pass Colobus monkeys, or trek is to Nyamasiizi Hot Springs and cave, where people bathe for relief from rheumatics and various conditions. Until recently, children were sent away for school, but Evelyne’s ‘Iniatives for Empowerment and Development’, has bought in some funding for a village school, which GEP supports with any profits from tourism. 130 children are enrolled, a huge benefit to keep the communities together. Volunteers - environmentalists, teachers etc, are always welcome. Green Environment Promotion, PO Box 462, Kabale. e:gepuganda@gmail.com t:0701469104, m:0782469104
