PROJECT A new multi-million pound swimming pool build at the Butlins Bognor Regis site requiring wayfinding, external, internal, safety, and ride signage, with bespoke elements throughout.

APPROACH Working closely with Bourne Leisure Ltd., PWP Architects, FITCH brand consultancy, KIER Group construction crews, and clock-makers; I acted as lead signage designer throughout the year long project. Due to the huge nature of the job (Over 150 bespoke signs in total), I was also given more project manager responsibilities. Liasing with health and safety officers, surveying the site, and following the project throughout manufacture to ensure signage was produced and installed accurately and efficiently. As part of this project I was also tasked with producing the designs for the 4m wide, working clock, fixed onto a curved wall above the pool; an engineering effort never before undertaken by Ashleigh Signs.

PROJECT After a successful relationship for many years, Greene King gave Ashleigh Signs sole-supplier status for their pub signage accross the UK.

APPROACH Acting as a Senior Designer, and later Lead Creative in the design team, I was asked to work on the more bespoke sites and new styles in Greene King’s catalogue. I was part of the design teams to steer the signage style for all of the new sub-category of Greene King’s pubs; including new pub-restaurant ventures and their “Urban Sport” offerings. Producing unique designs specifically catered to Greene King’s requirements, including signage featuring a 3D Sheffield tram with local musical acts riding it, I attended multiple meetings with the clients and ensured additional design challenges were brought to the team.

PROJECT After being purchased by Morrisons in 2011, Kiddicare required a recognisable, inviting, and exciting image and style to apply through the original store, and their newly acquired sites.

APPROACH Worked in conjunction with the Kiddicare team to develop the initial design concept into a striking yet feasible signage solution for 10 flagship Kiddicare stores. Produced signage design for each specific area the store, ranging from calm Nursery spaces, to fun and vibrant Toys & Games sections. Developed a consistent theme for Kiddicare materials, and a signage manufacturing manual from a base set of brand guidelines.

PROJECT Approached by Wetherspoons to bring new life to sites which have been left unchanged or were being renovated internally. Given full creative control for both signage and external decoration.

APPROACH Initially asked to create a new identifying set of plaques, headers, etc. to bring unity to the Wetherspoon site exteriors on a national scale. After this direction was decided against, Wetherspoons returned to ask us to provide unique and eye-catching designs to sites across the country, developing a stronger draw for these particular sites. Provided a variety of signage ideas, hand-drawn visualisations and photoshop mock-ups giving bespoke, almost “themed” styles with great feedback from the client.

PROJECT Working with Unite Students for many years, through multiple rebrands, new concepts, and additional requirements, Unite Group asked to develop their brand with further bespoke design solutions.

APPROACH Asked to be involved with multiple projects for Unite due to my experience producing interior and exterior schemes for them, and my success in previous design solutions I had supplied. Working through 3 different Unite brand variations, I have been asked each time to provide new construction site hoarding concepts, creating a technical design solution which could be replicated, patterned, and “tiled” on sites across the UK. In 2019 I was asked to produce bespoke artwork for multiple sites, including a Birmingham themed mural canvas for their Staniforth House site.

PROJECT Greene King approached Insignia Signs with the proposition of a rebrand of their Hungry Horse chain of pubs after acquiring some new sites, and adjusting some of the less successful sites.

APPROACH Working with TrueStory design agency, I was tasked with bringing together initial design ideas, and produce feasible signage schemes from them, whilst maintaining Greene Kings vision in the development of the brand identity. Worked closely with lead staff at Greene King to pitch ideas, and propose solutions relating to design and production. Produced a signage manual and artwork for multiple trial sites for the new brand, evolving and adapting my designs when faced with new challenges brought by each site.

PROJECT Tesco developed an idea to alter many of the on-site cafés into a buffet-breakfast and carvery offering called “Decks”.

APPROACH I was tasked to brand the chain as part of a small team, chosen to be lead designer once a brand style and logo was chosen. Responsible for initial signage design based around chalkboard & timber style, and a colourful 50s inspired rebrand in late 2014. Attended multiple meetings with Tesco and Decks staff to establish a consistent theme for material across the brand, producing a signage manual and artwork for all English and Welsh sites.

PROJECT Stonegate has a nation-wide collection of student-focused pubs called “Common Rooms�. These pubs aim to be a welcoming and exciting venue for local students, including arcade areas, and off-the-wall interiors. As such they require design work which is far from that of a traditional pub.

APPROACH My role on the Common Room sites was to create the more bespoke elements for each pub. This included region specific artwork, like wall vinyls displaying local landmarks in an origami/cutout style, window vinyls featuring prominent local icons, and serving hatches designed to look like old food trucks, driven by celebrities from the area. One particularly unique site included a window display featuring artists manikins playing games and relaxing. I produced the concept, plans and designs for this display. You can also see an example of my exterior design work for the Dockyard site, progressing from the original site photo, through my photoshop visual, into the completed on-site photo.

PROJECT A consistent client relationship with Whitbread meant a steady flow of projects related to the Premier Inn brand. Full internal and external schemes, reception installations, on-site restaurants, and full hotel re-brands were all covered.

APPROACH In my time working on Whitbread projects I have produced artwork schemes for many Premier Inn buildings. Due to my reliability on these sites, I have been asked to work on concept design schemes for various new ventures including Premier Inn Meeting Rooms, “ZIP” by Premier Inn, their range of inner city “Hub” hotels, and national brand update roll-outs. In 2019 I was heavily involved in the development and procurement of signage for Premier Inn’s expansion into German city centre hotels, along with the complete design direction and manual creation for their “Premier Plus” room signage.

PROJECT Having worked closely with Morrisons for many years, Ashleigh Signs was approached regarding a new update to their stores in the form of “Market Street”, whereby the various counters around the store would be stylised as seperate “shopfronts”.

APPROACH Working in conjunction with Elmwood design agency in Leeds, initial meetings were held with staff from Morrisons and Ashleigh Signs. My role was to take on-paper concepts from Elmwood, and develop them into feasable signage solutions, and then implement my own design development concepts in the process. I built a signage guideline template, specified construction methods, and sourced 3D elements of the signage which weren't to be made in house.

PROJECT Proposed as competition project, the brief was to design and build the set and space for the 2010 exhibition ‘Park Life’; an exhibition of the parks of Leeds, and their history, for Abbey House Museum in Leeds.

APPROACH As winner of the live brief, I carried out the final design amendments & workshop production with just one other student from the team, and the help of the University workshop staff. Placed in charge of every element of the project from producing display board graphics, to ordering materials, to workshop duties & constructing and installing the final pieces. The exhibition was opened on the 23rd of January 2010, to great feedback from both visitors and staff.

PROJECT Applejon Design is a Leeds based property consultancy. As a freelance company itself, they struggled to find time to re-brand after a shift in business. As such I was asked to undertake the project

APPROACH Looking to capture the architectural nature of the business, I approached an almost industrial, angular design, implementing the X/Y/Z axis arrows used in the business’ software as an almost crystalline emblem. The result was an attractive, modern style, with a recognizable logo that would appeal to both the residential and commercial client bases that Applejon caters for.

PROJECT Jack Haigh contacted me in 2018 as he began launching his personal training services. He required flyers for his local gym, business cards, and social media content to promote his business.

APPROACH Taking only the colours from his previous branding, I developed a new emblem from the JHT lettering. Expanding the angular nature of the logo, I took the corner piece and developed it into icons for the 4 main “cores� of his coaching process.

PROJECT A variety of lighting and desk-tidy projects, all surroundong a theme of “making a space more interactive for the user”. This was a theme carried throughout my university work. Here you can see a sample of concept sketches, 3D CAD renders, and prototypes constructed in the workshop. A series of interactive light fittings, designed to affect mood, and inspire play, were exhibited at the New Designers show in 2010.
