Time has been kind to the landscape outside our Cortland, NY factory. Little has changed since we started making fly lines here in 1915. The rolling hills and crystal-clear trout streams are still pretty much as they were when Cortland Line Company founder Ray Smith defined his mission to produce the World’s finest fly lines. At the time, natural silk was the material of choice for quality lines. Ray developed new processes to make his lines last longer and perform better. We still use this approach, but we long ago replaced the silk with PVC, Nylon, silicone and a host of other modern materials to make today’s Cortland fly lines. Another thing that hasn’t changed is the passion we put into our products. Ray Smith was a fisherman who wanted a better line and went about finding a way to make one. At Cortland Line, we’re fishermen too. It’s not unusual to see a Cortland employee walk down to the river during his lunch hour for “just a couple casts.” Spend a few minutes in the office and you’ll over hear pieces of conversation like, …..”how was Montana last week?”…….”talked to Frank and he said the tarpon”…………”sounds like it’s been a good year on the”……… “fished the West Branch yesterday’…”Hendricksons”…. “hot new pattern”………”stripers”… ….”water was up, but that QD did the trick”……. You see, we live to fish. And because we fish we know that the difference between success and failure on the water can depend on your fly line. Like you, we want to fish with the best fly lines in the available. So we build every Cortland Fly Line as if we were going to use it ourselves. 1. Keep it clean! A clean line is a happy line. And a better performing line. During fishing, any fly line will pick up dirt, algae, minerals, and in salt water, salt. These materials will stick to the finish and can reduce floatability and shootability. They can also act like sandpaper and actually cut into the guides on your rod. Clean lines shoot farther, float better and last longer. The best way to clean a line is by using one of the many Non Solvent Based line cleaners widely available today. Cortland Pro Line Cleaner, a water based cleaner, is our own choice. If you are unsure whether a cleaner is water or solvent based, ask at your local fly shop. Solvent-based cleaners can dissolve the PVC finish of your line, resulting in a much shorter life. Stay away from products like Armor All. While these are great for your car, they can actually melt your line’s finish! The same goes for oil based products like WD40. These products have been recommended recently for “making a line shoot better”, but will destroy a fly line’s finish in no time. A good line cleaner is simple soap and water. Any good non-detergent liquid soap works fine. Just put a few drops on a clean, wet cloth or paper towel and pull the line through it several times. Repeat with a wet cloth (no soap) to rinse. You’ll be surprised how much dirt will come off even a clean looking line. It’s a good policy to clean your line after each fishing day. 2. Give it a tug! If you have ever watched tournament casters, you have most likely seen them stretching their lines before competition. Any fly line will have some degree of memory from being left on the reel between fishing trips, and taking a few seconds to stretch out the coils will pay off in ease of handling and better shooting. Pull off the length of line that you normally cast, plus a few more feet, and simply stretch it between your hands a few feet at a time. Give it a good tug, hold for a second, and the coils will be gone! Wind it back on the reel and start fishing! Stretching your line is especially important in cold weather or when fishing saltwater, (or anywhere else) where longer casts are the norm. 3. Don’t step on it! Stepping on a fly line can damage the finish or even cut the line. This is especially true if you wear studded or cleated wading shoes. In a boat, be careful not to stand on your line when it’s coiled on the deck. 4. Keep it away from Solvents! Insect repellents, gasoline, stove fuel, etc, can all dissolve the PVC finish of your line. Keep them away from your line, but if you do spill something on it, rinse it immediately with water and wipe it with a soft cloth or paper towel. 5. Check your rod guides! Over time, line guides can wear out and become grooved from use. This is especially true on older rods, which used steel snake guides. A grooved or worn guide can literally cut the finish off a fly line in no time. Take a minute and check for guide wear, and have any worn guides replaced by the rod maker. 6. Don’t use grease type “Floatants” on modern PVC fly lines! In the past, when fly lines were made of oiled natural silk, fishermen had to use grease to waterproof and float their lines. Without this protection, the silk would absorb water and sink, and if left untreated would eventually rot and break. Today, fly lines are made of inorganic nylon and plastic materials and don’t need to be greased to “preserve’ them. Also, the floating elements are built into the line itself and anglers don’t need to add anything to enhance the floatability of the line. In fact, using grease type floatants can actually decrease the performance of your line and possibly harm the line’s finish. Grease will build up on the line and make it drag in the guides. It will also attract dirt and eventually cause the line to sink! So just keep it clean as suggested in rule 1 above and you will get the maximum performance from your floating fly line!

A couple of years ago some of the dedicated dry fly anglers at Cortland went to the R & D department and asked, “why the hell can’t you build us a fly line with a real floating tip? A tip that stays on top all day, every day.” Well the guys in the lab coats scratched their heads and then did just that. The prototypes were fantastic, the testers loved them. “How did you do it?” they asked. “Can’t tell you, its proprietary information,” the lab coat guys said. “ The tip is so fine but still floats higher than anything we’ve ever seen. What’s the secret?” “Can’t say.” “More Micro Balloons in the tip?” “Nope, that’s been done to death. We’re using something different, something no one else has.”“ok,” said the fishermen, “we’ll shut up. Just make us more lines”. ProFessionAl enDorseMent Stillwater fishing requires specific lines to fish different zones in the water. I rely on Cortland Precision Sub-Surface lines for my fishing. The Clear Camo Intermediate is the slowest sinking line available. Perfect for fishing stillwater in shallow shoreline areas or on the top 6 feet. The 5 foot type 2 Precision ghosttip was designed for fishing emerging insects in depths of 2-5 feet in lakes or nymphing in streams and rivers. Denny Rickards Clear Type 2 (90') The Denny Rickards Clear Type 2 (2 - 2.5 IPS) is a full sinking line that should be fished in Zone 3 (6' - 12'). The Clear Type 2 will sink twice as fast as the Clear Camo (2' in 10 seconds).

Denny annually catches and releases up to 700 rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout that weigh between 4 and 20 pounds fishing the stillwater system on public waters. Denny is a member of the Cortland Pro Staff.

444 Classic - Sinking Lines (90') With most species taking far more of their natural food below the surface than on the top. Sinking lines get the fly down to these deeper feeding locations. Because feeding patterns, water depth and current vary, Cortland manufactures a wide range of sinking lines. Available in different densities (sink rates) to insure that there is a line right for any condition. 444 Sinking Lines come in varying shades of brown, with the lighter lines indicating a slower sink rate than the darker.

With most species taking far more of their natural food below the surface than on the top. Sinking lines get the fly down to these deeper feeding locations. Fly fishing authories have considered the true Cassette System from STH as the greatest advancement in fly reels in decades. Convenient and economical, the Cassette System allows you to carry several different fly lines at a lower cost than conventional metal spools. The revolutionary Turbine Drag System consists of a turbine impeller, immersed in a special multi-viscosity fluid. As the fish speeds up, the drag increases automatically (up to a maximum point that is sufficient to slow a fish; not stop a freight train). 3. Spool over-run or backlash is impossible with this reel. When the fish stops it’s run, the fluid in the turbine effectively acts as a break against the turbine and thus stops the spool.
