BORN TO FISH
Carp Fishing 2009 www.greysfishing.com
Welcome to the 2009/10 Greys Carp Catalogue A warm welcome to the 2009/10 Greys Carp catalogue. What a year it’s been! More & more people are going fishing than ever before which is reflected by the increase in rod license sales, and this year has seen some amazing carp being put on the bank. The Greys Carp Academy have had some truly stunning captures this year; unfortunately there’s not room to mention all their achievements, but Dave Moore’s capture of ‘Blackeye’ at 54lb really stands out. This year also saw the 90lb Carp barrier broken by Andre Komornicki landing the famous scar fish at a massive weight of 91lb, again using Greys rods, well done Andre! Achievements like this really are testament to the time these guys put into the sport, both on and off the bank. You may well meet some of our Academy members whilst fishing or even at one of the many shows we attend, where they will be more than happy to offer sound advice, all backed by years of knowledge and angling experience. Talking new product, sure to be a success are the new Prodigy SX carp rods. The original Prodigy carp was hard act to follow, having been a market leader for an amazing 7 years! But the new SX version will not disappoint, it ticks the all important boxes for what prodigy stands for: performance and value. The new flagship ‘Torsion’ range has already created quite a stir since its debut at the Tackle and Guns trade show. We knew the rods were a bit special, being the slimmest and lightest blank we have ever produced to date, yet they still retain huge casting potential. Then there’s the new Torsion ‘Spyda Wynda’ bivvy, a first for Greys, which simply oozes innovation and quality. The Torsion range is the end product of years of behind the scenes work, testing to destruction along with design and development. At our headquarters in Alnwick England we still retain inhouse manufacturing capability, rapid prototyping and composite expertise. All of which have been used during the design and development of these projects, a genuine big thank you to all the team for their input. By the time you read this, our website (www.greysfishing.com) will have undergone a complete revamp making it even easier to use, more interactive, comprehensive product information and all the latest news. Don’t forget you can also use the website to register you rod warranty and contact us with any of your views, questions or even send us your latest capture pictures. The Test Rig
In 2009, Hardy & Greys Ltd (Owners of the brands Hardy, Greys and Chub) have even more investment going into technology, people and processes. In the people we have some of the best in the business. There’s Chris Bond (Research and Development Director), Stevie Harper (Composites Engineer), Charlie Norris (Reel Designer), Roy Bell (Graphite Rod Designer) and Colin Skene (Research and Development Engineer). All anglers. All aiming to ensure that we continue to provide anglers around the world with products which add value in terms of performance and durability and which they are proud to own. This passion for creating great fishing tackle is the mainstay of our business and we are constantly searching for ways to improve that process. There’s the Hardy & Greys Rod Simulator - a revolutionary computer system that has changed the face of composite technology and how rods are designed. Our Finite Element Analysis system lets us experiment with potential materials, actions and designs before blanks are even built and the unique Hardy & Greys Test Rig measures rod profiles, action, durability, balance and strength. Every aspect of a rod can be tried and tested with total flexibility. Of course, Hardy & Greys technicians work hand in glove throughout the process with the Greys Academy members and consultants. Their expertise complements the work done in the laboratories to perfection. And perfection is what we consistently aim to achieve. When the design, prototyping and testing of each product is complete and we are confident we have everything right, we work with our manufacturing partners around the globe who are able to produce the level of expertise and craftsmanship that we expect and our customers demand. Of course, we continue to maintain our manufacturing facility in Alnwick. At Hardy & Greys, our aim is to ensure that we continue to provide anglers around the world with products that simply make the whole process of going fishing more enjoyable. With so many different lengths and test curves available, choosing a carp rod can be a real minefield. To make things easier for you, we’ve decided on a few guidelines that should help you make the correct choice. During recent years there has been a trend towards more powerful test curves. This probably reflects the fact that carp are getting bigger! This, coupled with the introduction of PVA bags and Method feeders, means that some anglers require that extra ‘punch’ from their carp rods. This is due to the Method feeder and bag’s less than aero-dynamic shapes. While you read this, please remember these are only guidelines and that length and test curve choice will always remain a personal one. Both feel and comfort will play a big part – what suits one angler will not always be right for another. For example, some of the more extreme rod lengths and test curves require a good casting technique, to compress the blank and release its full potential. With this in mind, other anglers prefer lower test curves to gain maximum feel during the fight. Whatever model, length or test curve, you can be sure that it’s been tried and tested by our scientists, design engineers, and our Greys Carp Academy members. That is why it carries the Greys name and the Greys Worldwide Extended Warranty.
2.5lb This test curve is ideal for fishing short to medium range. When fishing at close range a softer 2.5lb rod will absorb the lunges of a fighting fish. This also means excellent casting accuracy, especially with short-range baits. Don’t be deceived though, all our 2.5lb test curve carp rods have good reserves of power in the butt section, should it be needed. While this test curve lends itself superbly for playing fish, it’s not ideal for casting out large Method feeders, or PVA bags. This is because the rod can easily be bottomed out (over stretched) under these high compression loads. As well as being a great medium-range fishing rod, this test curve is a popular choice for surface fishing. 2.75lb A very popular test curve that’s able to cope with a multitude of situations. Ideal for fishing either single leads, or small Method feeders and PVA bags. In the right hands these rods are still capable of 100 yards plus, yet are also great fish players close into the bank. You can do all this without the fear of a high hook pull rate. A 2.75lb carp rod is a truly versatile tool, but particularly well suited to medium to long-range fishing.
3lb Out of all our test curves, this is now the most popular in our range. Excellent reserves of power make fishing at range no problem, whether it’s single leads or a PVA bag. Don’t be shy about really winding these rods up to get into the butt section to release the power. Like the 2.75lb, our 3lb test curves are particularly well suited to medium-long fishing but with a touch more power for punching out baits, or setting the hook at range should the need arise. In the right hands, and with the correct set-up, distances of over 130 yards can easily be achieved. 3.25lb By popular demand we have now developed a 3.25lb test curve which is well suited to long range work or when conditions require the use big PVA bags and sticks. This highly versatile addition to the range is sure to find its fans and is often a popular choice for anglers looking for one set of rods to cover both UK and European fishing demands.
Shock Leader Guide As a guide always use the 10x safety rule for your shock leaders, so for example, for a 3oz lead use a 30lb shock leader, 4oz lead 40lb shock leader etc. This will result in fewer crack-offs when striving for that extra distance.
3.5lb This test curve is ideal for the angler who wants to fish big baits and bags, at the limits of their casting ability. When using higher test curves like this, slightly more care will need to be taken while playing fish under the rod tip. With the correct casting styles and good compression, distances of 150 yards+ can be achieved. During testing we have seen recorded distances of well in excess of 200 yards using some of the 13ft Greys models. The extra power of these rods will be well appreciated by anglers looking to set hooks well at range.
Whatever model, length or test curve, you can be sure it’s been tried and tested by our Carp Academy members. 11
Torsion Carp because power is nothing without control TorsionTM Carp Rods Brand new this year, the slimmest, lightest blank in the Greys carp range. First impressions last, but performance is proof. Take one look at the new Torsion carp rod and it’s strikingly slim; pick the rod up and it’s amazingly light and well balanced. Cast the rod and it becomes immediately apparent that the rod has massive reserves of power, more than happy with big leads and PVA bags yet surprisingly still has that all important feel under the rod tip during the crucial last moments of the fight. Gone are the days of super slim blanks that just don’t perform; this time Greys have really pushed the limits of physics. For those anglers really wanting to hit the horizon there is a 50mm butt available on models 3lb and higher. In summary the new Greys Torsion is quite simply the slimmest, lightest and best performance carp that we have ever produced. That’s some statement when you’ve been producing rods for over 40 years!

Stalkers These are rods you can’t afford to be without if you stalk fish or fish floaters. The 7’ Stalker is the perfect close range ‘jungle stick. The 9’ Stalker is a versatile stalking rod that is infinitely adaptable and the 9’-12’ provides total versatility.
These are rods you just can’t afford to do without if you stalk fish or fish floaters. The seven footer is perfect for close-quarter big fish hunting. Total stopping power but without that stiffness that results in pulled hooks. The standard nine foot version is infinitely adaptable. A brilliant close quarter snag rod. Superb close-in for surface work. A big fish world favourite. To complete the Stalkers we now have a 9-12 footer - a nine foot rod with a three-foot extension that gives you the flexibility of a twelve-foot rod when it’s needed. Just think. There are times when a longer rod is necessary perhaps to poke a bait out over some troublesome weeds or snags. Perhaps that extra length will give you a better angle when it comes to placing a bait or playing a fish.
