West Hull FM Life Presenter Profile Jools is one of West Hull FM’s newer presenters. He presents two shows a week, Mid Morning Live on Friday mornings, and The A-Z of Music on Saturday evenings. We chatted with him before one of his shows to find out more about the man nicknamed “The Professor”. WHFMLife: Jools, you’ve been with us for a few months now, how are you finding West Hull? Jools: I’m loving being here, the people of West Hull are great and have welcomed me with open arms, and for that I’m very thankful to the station and to the general public. I think my accent gives it away that I’m not originally from Hull, but I’ve had people stop me in the street and are puzzled by where I am from as I just have a northern accent, but nothing you can really pinpoint. W: We have to ask, where did the nickname “The Professor” come from? J: I knew you’d ask me that! I’ve been presenting on the radio since Christmas of 2013, and one of my colleagues at the first station I worked at was so shocked about my knowledge of songs that he called me that, and it’s just stuck over the last couple of years. W: The A-Z of Music is a great addition to Saturday nights, what part of the show gives you the most satisfaction? J: I get quite a lot from the show, but not just during the two hours. I put a lot of planning into it, people might argue that they can’t tell, but I thoroughly enjoy doing that because I find songs and artists that I’ve forgotten, and because we have no set play-list, I can share them with the audience. I also try to play songs from an artist that may not have charted as high as others, to try and vary the music during the two hours.
W: The audience is something we’re very proud of here at West Hull FM, we hope they have been kind to you. J: Oh absolutely! Without the listeners, ultimately we are nothing, and I find that some people who work in radio forget that, but I have always put the listeners first, my shows are as much theirs as they are mine. I love to hear from people who can give me ideas to put into current shows, and also those going forward. W: So apart from presenting shows on West Hull FM, what else takes your time? J: As well as my duties at West Hull FM, I’m also just finishing my second year studying for a Journalism and Digital Media degree at Hull School of Art and Design, so that takes quite a lot of my free time. I combine that with running 3 networking hours on Twitter, 2 for the UK, and on Thursday evenings, I’m part of the hosting team for #HullHour together with another radio presenter and a local business owner. W: What advice would give to someone looking to start in radio? J: Give it a try, stations like West Hull FM are crying out for new talent, particularly female voices. It’s the best job in the world, talking and playing music.
