PORTFOLIO Joost Kist
INTRODUCTION.
In November 2012 I started my own practice Kist Hustinx Architecture and Design together with Maarten Hustinx. Our goal is to create timelesss Architecture for any budget. We believe that flexibiltiy is the key to sustainabilty. By designing adaptable buidings from a multipurpose perspective builings will be future ready without knowing what its distination will be. Thereby we treath our projects very rational. Every descission has a functional thought. All this to create projects with the most benefit for the end user.
Joost Christian Kist A: Vincent van Goghstraat 5a 1072 KJ Amsterdam The Netherlands. T: +31-6-53582722 E: joost@kisthustinx.nl
In July 2011 I finished my education in Architecture at the Technical University Delft. For my final thesis I choose the studio of Materialization where I designed a proposal for the headquarters of the United Nations Environmental Council. In this studio the focus was on the integrated approach of the detail in the greater concept. Between my bachelors and master half a year in Melbourne gave me besides a wider view on architecture education also an experience for life. After finishing my degree I am now gaining practical experience at the architekten Cie. in Amsterdam. In this portfolio the latest and most relevant projects of my studies, internships and competitions are gathered to give you an impression on my capacities, experience and skills in design.

Nieuwegracht 201 / Utrecht PRIVATE P RIVATE COMMISIONS / Kist Hustinx Architectuur en Ontwerp.
Our startup project for Kist Hustinx Architecture and Design was the renovation of a end nineteenth century state monument in Utrecht. This townhouse mansion, located on Utrechts prominent ‘Nieuwegracht’ (New Canal) in the hisorical centre has great value for its location. Our task was to completely renovate this 550 m2 mansion so it can stand time again. We have designed and directed the whole project from construction to furniture.

BOEVÉHOUSE 2.0 Bergse Linker Rottekade 77 / Rotterdam PRIVATE COMMISIONS / Kist Hustinx Architectuur en Ontwerp. For the refurbishment of a dykehouse in Rotterdam the question of the client was to create an connection between the first floor and the souterain. The goal was to enhance the interaction between the kitchen on zouterain level and de living area on the ground floor. The intervention we sugested was instead of making an internal connection to ad an extension in wich the vertical circulation is placed. This solution not only gained extra square meters but also solved insulation problems caused by an earlier renovation.

SWIMMINGPOOL - NOORDERPARKBAD. Florapark / Amsterdam Noord
Project team: Branimir Medić, Lars van Hoften, Rink Alberda Eric Vrieling, Jurgen Metz, Luis Afonso, Joost Kist.
The Architekten Cie. has been assigned by the municipality of Amsterdam to design the new Noorderparkbad in Amsterdam-Noord. The pool will be built on the site of the current Floraparkbad. The swimmingpool will have indoor and outdoor pools and a catering facility. The pool complex must meet several sustainability requirements. The design should aim at a low consumption of energy and water. Also, the complex is built with recyclable materials such as wood and rubble granules (instead of standard concrete).
Revit and photoshop.
For this project I joined the process from preliminary design untill final design. My part in the process was to research materialisation of the facade as well as the interiors of the swimmingpool. I also had the responsabiliy for the organisation of the entrance hall and bar. The goal was to design this as a integrated whole. The reby I was responsible for the design of the outdoor area. This contains the configuration of a competition bath, a recreational bath, a slide with skimout, and two childrens bath.

URBAN PLAN VLASHIKA
Greater moskou region / Russia. COMPETITION ENTRY
Project team: Jason Lee, Branimir Medić & Pero Puljiz, Patrick Koschuch, Raul Forsoni, Hesh Fekry, Joost Kist, Lenka Rezbarikova.
de Architekten Cie. won an invited international Request for Proposal for a new satellite city on the periphery of Moscow. Aside from commercial, services and amenities, the mixed-use development will comprise approximately 15,000 units or over 1 million square meters of residential area ranging from single family detached villas to high density apartment blocks and social housing. Given the rural context, the heart of the proposal is a large landscape park which subdivides the development into smaller neighborhoods while simultaneously improving the overall spatial quality of the plan. The park also serves critical sustainability functions which are: to maintain wildlife corridors through the new development which is in a greenfield condition; and to be a biological filter, collecting and cleansing storm water runoff from the new development and recycling it for grey water functions and water based recreational activities. de Architekten Cie. continues to promote the courtyard block typology, as in Seoul, Korea and Perm, Russia, for its flexibility, density, size and almost limitless configurations. Furthermore, the courtyard block has repeatedly demonstrated its efficacy in promoting social cohesion and harmony through it’s clear delineation of public and private space.

KEELUNG HARBOUR AND SERVICE BUILDING Greater moskou region / Russia. COMPETITION ENTRY / Keelung Harbour Office. Project team: Jason Lee, Branimir Medić Joost Kist, Maarten van Zutphen, Vincent van Leeuwen
De Architekten Cie. joined the competition for the new harbour and service terminal in Keelung, the second largest harbour in Taiwan, in the greater Taipei area. Thebriefcontainedapassengerterminalbuildingandanofficesbuilding integrated into an iconic landmark for Taiwan. Working on this project was as if being in a presure cooker where we managed to create a design of a 120.000 m2 and program in just 5 weeks. The shape of the building was driven by air flows of the local climate to achieve highly sustainable design. In this proces I was responsible for the programatic planning of the passenger terminal. For this I developped the floor plans shown on the next page. However we as a team where very content with the result in such short time, the jury unfortunatly chose from other aplicants to go through.

UNITED NATIONS ENIVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL. Manhattan / New York. GRADUATION PROJECT / Technical University Delft.
This project is the final project of my Masters program. The assignment was to design a building for the United Nations Environmental Council (UNEC). As the newest Council of the United Nation, UNEC will become the world centre for sustainability. In my vision this should not only be the political centre, but more or less the start of a development. Because of the urgency of change onwards sustainability in the world, my goal was to make the public a partner in the development. Therefore I connected the new building directly to the existing building.

Public
The internal organization is based on the public meeting the politics. On the lower part of the building a public research centre has been created, where ordinary people can develop their sustainable idea’s. This centre is ordered by free placed pavilions. Above these pavilions there are two auditoria placed as freestanding objects in the building. They are recognizable by form and materialization. Above these auditoria the supportive offices are located. The auditoria form the centre of the project. Here is where the meeting between public and politics will take place. This can be seen as the handshake.

The critical Detail in this project was how to deal with the connection between old and new. The decisions made where driven by the attitude of respecting the old and in the mean time getting enough attention towards new. The s olution for me was to let the new part embrace old in a way the characteristic shape of the General Assembly will be preserved. To make it one composition I reused materials and rhythms of the existing building and implanted them on a subtle new way.

ART DEPOSITORY Maashaven / Rotterdam MASTER semester 1 / Technical University Delft.
This project contains a depository building for the Boymans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Forced by the program, most typical of this building is the insignificant amount of openings. The building is mostly closed because 80% of the program contains depository space to preserve artwork. 20% contained a restaurant, studio’s, offices and exhibition space. To prevent an appearance of a big closed box I decided to play with light and translucency. By craving the light needing functions out if a solid block a vrom appeares. By covering this vorm with a translucent skin, the sunlight creates an ever changing building. Because volumes and planes are placed at different distances behind the translucent skin, some will be more clear than the others. The light transform it during the day by the rotation of the sun. At night this changeover is even bigger by the use of artificial light shining from inside out. For the materialization I chose polycarbonate plates and for the in-side volumes concrete. The use of polycarbonate gives the building an industrial appearance, which suits the character of the location.

MATERNITY CARE Rotterdam. HOTEL. BACHELORS Final Project / Technical University Delft
This project is the final project of my bachelors program. The project given by the interior department of Architecture was concentrating on the spaces in-side of the building. The interaction of what is private and what is public in a building was a very important subject in this course. The building that was designed was a hotel integrating maternity care. In the brief a four stories high building envelope with an atrium inside was given. in this envelope one fourth was reserved for the design of a maternity care hotel. The concept of design is based on a gentle transition from the public space to the hotelroom. In between a domestic ambiance has created by introducing public living rooms.

CITY HALL
Zuider Amstel / Amsterdam. BACHELORS / Technical University Delft
As a product of a redivision of districts in Amsterdam the Quarter ZuiderAmstel will arise. In favour of the districts’ new identity a town hall is needed with its own program and demands. In this program three main themes where accommodated: the public, the democracy and the bureaucracy. The concept of the design of the City Hall is based on two volumes with one placed above the other in a way it looks like the upper one is floating over the other. Twisting the volumes and the contrasted choice of materials exaggerates this effect. The public and democratic functions are placed in the lower volume, the bureaucracy in the upper part. The two volumes are connected by an atrium which inhabits all the vertical internal traffic. By the addition of this atrium the interior of the building will be considered as one while the building from out-site will still be considered as two volumes.

TRANSFORMATIE PRINSES MARGRIET FLAT Bramante Plein / Rotterdam. CEOMPETITION ENTRY / Woonstad Rotterdam.
For the transformation of the build in de the Sixties flat in Rotterdam, It was my goal to give the monotone facade a more changing appearance. I achieved this by introducing typical archetypes of the backgarden to a multistorie flat building; the hedge and the fence. In normal backgardens they give people the opportunity to dicide how much privacy a garden has. By giving the flat inhabitants a stucture that besides is structural for hanging the balkonies also gives place to a wooden fence on which plants can grow. The fence consists of wooden vertical styles which makes it a semitransparant boundrie between neigbours. In this way people can decide themselfes weather they fully grow their fence for more privacy or leave it open to have more interaction with the neighbours. In the structure the watering system is integrated which transports rainwater that is gathered on the roof of the building. In this way the inhabitants have got a nice backgarden while the flat gets a varieting appearance.
5.2
TRANSFORMATIE GENIELOODS.
Stelling van Amsterdam / Vijfhuizen. COMPETITION ENTRY / Kunstfort Vijfhuizen. This competititon contains the transformation of an old shed that is part of the ‘stelling van Amsterdam’ which is placed since 1996 on the UNesco world heritage list. Thisshedispartofthe‘Kunstfort’andtheassignmentwastomakethisshedaninformational centre for the Kunstfort and its surroundings. The shed is positioned at the bottom of the dike. To connect the different elements of the location (the fort, the shed and the houses), we focused our orientation towards these elements. So the entrance of the shed becomes the main entrance of the area. Nevertheless we kept the exterior intact to keep the character of the hangar.
In the section you can have a clear sight of the spatiality of the shed. By disconnecting the first floor around the walls the becomes an instant relation between the ground floor and the upper one. This relation is created for sight, lightning, ventilation and heating of the complete shed.
