Friends of the Park The “Friends of the Park” organization exists to help and support the facilities and services of Joplin Parks and Recreation. Sponsored through the Department, the organization serves the community through a memorial tree/bench program, a scholarship program to help kids participate in our recreation programs, and other special projects that arise.
Tree and Bench Donations Trees and benches purchased through the program are planted and/or placed in city parks, trails, golf course, and playgrounds. Exact placement is at the discretion of the Parks and Recreation Department. Payment is due at the time order is placed. These donations qualify as a charitable contribution tax deduction.
Trees The cost of the tree program is $175 per tree. Price includes tree, 4”x8” engraving plaque, and continued maintenance of the tree (planting, staking, watering and mulching, etc.). Donor can choose from a list of trees provided by the Department. Trees will be planted during the fall and spring planting season, but they may be ordered at any time.
Benches Benches are installed at approved sites in the order requests are received. Installation depends on the time of year received and the number of preceding orders. Benches can be requested to be placed at most parks, until they reach maximum capacity. The cost of the bench program is $1,500 per bench. Price includes cost of bench, 4”x8” engraving plaque, delivery and installation.
Scholarship Fund Many in our community struggle to find funds to participate in recreational opportunities. Your support can help bring the benefit of youth programming to these kids! A donation to the scholarship fund allows these children to join their friends while making memories.
Giving Levels: $35 - allows 1 child to play a sport for the season $60 - allows 1 child to have an unlimited pool pass for the year $90 - allows 1 child to attend one week of summer day camp
Special Projects & Volunteer Opportunities Being exposed to the elements year-round takes a toll on our parks and facilities. There are both planned and popup projects that need to be completed. Talk to us about sponsoring a park project or creating a volunteer event! We have many ideas to fit any budget!
Programs & Special Events Our programs and events are wonderful opportunities to effectively reach local residents while making a positive impact in our community. Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt We scatter 10,000 candy and prize filled eggs onto our 4 softball fields and then turn off the lights!

Movies in the Park We bring big-screen, family-friendly entertainment to our local parks on our inflatable movie screen.

Candy Cane Hunt We spread candy canes around the park for the children to find with their flashlight! Spiva Tree Lighting, Holiday Tree Trail, & Roll-n-Stroll Challenge We have several community holiday events in November and December. We celebrate the holiday season with lighting up Spiva Park in Downtown Joplin, lining the trail at Mercy Park with decorated trees, and offer an challenge to end the year on an active note.

Athletic Division Joplin Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of youth and adult leagues throughout the year. Nearly 4,000 players enjoy our programs that teach athletes sportsmanship, social skills, and problem solving. Community support helps us keep registration fees affordable, thus giving everyone an opportunity to play!
Youth Sports Sponsorships Our youth soccer league is designed for kids ages 5-14 years old. We typically have over 400 players per season in our leagues. Our t-ball league is open to kids 5-6 years old and typically has 80 players.
