Unlike most animals, whales are conscious breathers. All mammals sleep, but whales cannot afford to become unconscious for long because they may drown. It is thought that only one hemisphere of the whale’s brain sleeps at a time, so they rest but are never completely asleep.

A baby blue whale drinks approximately 130 gallons of milk each day.

It is nearly impossible to tell the age of a whale just by looking at it, but there are other methods of aging whales. The longest-living whale species is thought to be the bowhead whale, which may live to over 200 years old!

A single breath from a Blue Whale adult is enough to inflate 2000 balloons.

The Blue Whale's heart is the size of a small car, its tongue the size of an African Elephant, and its major artery, the aorta, is large enough for a small child to climb through.

In Oklahoma, it is against the law to hunt whales.

Originally whales were hunted for oil and meat by whalers all over the world. this was common practice until there was a global ban put on whaling because of devistation to the population. there was a fear that they would later become extinct. whales have also been hunted for bones or baleen. The bones was used for a variety of things but most common was corsets.

Some species, such as the humpback whale, communicate using melodic sounds, known as whale song. These sounds can be extremely loud, depending on the species. Sperm whales have only been heard making clicks, while toothed whales use echolocation that can generate about 20,000 watts of sound and be heard for many miles.
