“Design is the fundamental soul of a manmade creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service. Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. - Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple

Koloch Kitchen Designs The Koloch Kitchen Design is both simple and elegant. NKBA standards are met with the kitchen triangle, keeping the cook top, sink, and the fridge in close proximity to each other. There were ten requests the client wanted to incorporate into the new kitchen design.
• The first was an island. By opening the kitchen up into the dining area by removing the wall, we were able to create more space in the kitchen to be able to fit an island. The island creates additional counter space as well as excess base cabinet storage. • Second, the client likes the appearance of wood. Due to this fact, finished wood cabinets were used for both the wall cabinets and the base cabinets, including the cabinets on the island. • Third, the client home schools her two children and required a place to work on schoolwork with them as well as a place to eat. A table with booth seating was incorporated into the little nook by the window. Placing the eating/study table in this area also provided natural light for studying to reduce the use of electricity during the day. • Fourth, the client prefers stainless steel appliances. Sub-zero wolf provided a stainless gas stove, as well as a wall hood, and a stainless refrigerator. A stainless steel toe kick was used as well. • Fifth, it was imperative that the stove be gas rather than electric, modular, or an induction cook top. The sub-zero wolf model we used in this design is a four burner gas cook top. • An apron front sink was required as well. The model used in this design is an Alcott apron front sink with two handles as well as a sprayer to meet our sixth requirement.

• Since the client spends a lot of time in the kitchen for cooking, school, and other things, such as paying bills, it was important to ensure that enough light was available. Sconce lighting above the cabinets provides enough light to be able to clearly see inside the cabinets as well as light up the counter space and the cook top. The hanging pendants above the island light up the sink as well as the counter space for food preparation. The hanging pendants above the work table create enough light to clearly be able to see homework or bills on a cloudy day. • Eighth, the client insisted on a granite countertop. In this design we used a 3 inch granite countertop from Home Depot with a slight nose overhang on the end. • Tile flooring was also requested by the client. The tile selected from Home Depot, not only goes well with the tan color theme the client selected, but will also be easy to maintain. • Finally, the client required a dishwasher to create less clean up work in the kitchen. A stainless dishwasher was incorporated into the island. Placing it in the island keeps it in close proximity to the sink to make cleaning up a quick, easy task.

The Anderson Residence
This multigenerational Austrian Art Nouveau residence has a combination of geometric and organic lines that create a flowing path from one space to another. The variation of countertop heights provides comfortable service to all ages and heights. Adequate storage space supports a sufficient easy life style. Public zones are easy to access by all, yet are separated from personal zones to ensure privacy. Well-lit stairs help guide individuals upstairs to private rooms or downstairs to public areas. To create a style that is zen and chic, the emphasis of this interior is light. The blend of both soft, elegant lighting fixtures and bold, simple bursts of light cast mood changing effects depending on the time of day. Color is the dominant feature that supports the light emphasis. The warm shades connect with the subtle glow to create a dream-like environment. Indulging this home in lush textures generates a refined contrast with the sleek illumination. Due to costly construction and materials, low VOC paints and LED bulbs were used to ensure a more economically friendly space.

Starbucks Commercial Offices Starbucks is a growing company in need of an office expansion to fulfill their needs. The open concept of the office resembles the open minds needed by Starbucks employees to explore their creativity in designing new Starbucks coffee houses and creating new exotic blends of coffee. The cool color palette and raw, recycled materials used reflect the company’s green and LEED certification accomplishments. The circular traffic flow allows easy navigation from public to private areas. Adequate hallway and storage space provide extra room to plan for future expansion. The project is kept to a minimal budget to conserve for future flexibility and growth.

Cities of the World - San Francisco This showroom is inspired by San Francisco, California. Each piece in the display is a representation of a historical piece of architecture located in San Francisco. The table and seating resemble the Golden Gate Bridge. The fountain is a model of the Vaillancourt Fountain located in the Justin Herman Plaza just outside the Embarcadero shopping center. In the corner is a rendition of the Transamerica Pyramid, which is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco. All pieces used in this display are custom designed and constructed.

La Biblioteca BURCH Fabric - Ocean La Biblioteca is a place for both education and research. Computer stations, as well as an abundance of other tangible resources, are easily accessible to all. The design intent is flexible in use, reflecting the historic district while also having a contemporary vibe. The open, organic design will allow for easy transition from one space to another. Natural light is easily available through a multitude of windows. Dropped acoustical ceiling panels in addition to acoustical wall panels assist in maintaining sounds at a marginal level. A natural, color scheme has been selected with splashes of cool accents for added interest. As an adaptive reuse project, reclaimed wood flooring, low VOC paints, and recycled glass tiles are selected to ensure an eco-friendly interior. The cost is kept to a minimal budget to conserve for future expansion and remodeling.

Artist’s Alley
Artist’s Alley is an adaptive reuse project for the Barber-Colman Company nestled in downtown Rockford, IL. The Barber-Colman Company is historically known as one of Rockford’s largest manufacturers. The company was founded in 1894 by Howard Colman, an inventor and entrepreneur, and W. A. Barber, an investor. The BarberColman Company was the second largest factory with over 2500 employees. It was also Rockford’s biggest employer in 1963. In 1967 it was one of Rockford’s ten largest companies, employing over 5000 workers. In the year 1967, for the city as a whole, the manufacturing work force was 56,575 employees in a population of 250,000. The historic complex was vacated in 2001 and the property was purchased by the City of Rockford for $775,000 in 2002. The purpose of the remodel is to utilize the old Barber-Colman property while dealing with Rockford’s current needs. There are very few stores and restaurants near this area on the Rock River. Therefore, a small shopping plaza as well as a few restaurants will be incorporated in a section of the design, as well as a small healthcare facility. Due to the high crime rate in Rockford, a community center will be included in a portion of the remodel as well. The community center will be an attempt to take the gang members and criminals, especially the youth, off the streets and give them a second chance at life and offer them a future. In addition, the abundance of new jobs will provide work for those in downtown Rockford who are unemployed and living in poverty.

GUILT
GUILT is a customer – dedicated establishment that is geared towards helping those struggling with eating disorders. The main design goal is to create a soothing and peaceful environment that has a homey, welcoming feel to make the guests more at ease. A combination of public and private areas offer places for both social interaction as well as solitude and privacy. High ceilings in the workout area generate enough open space for sound to travel. Small, cozy office and therapy rooms create a secure, protected feeling of being at home. The overall circular flow of the space encourages interaction and mingling. The centralized snack bar fashions the perfect place for meeting new people going through similar experiences. The cool color palette has been shown to produce a restful, reassuring reaction, as it resembles the ocean, sky, and nature, as well as cause people to be more productive, particularly during workouts. Adequate windows and skylights are presented to allow plenty of natural sunlight, which has been proven to reduce stress and relieve depression. LED lights with automatic movement sensors conserve energy and power when rooms are deserted for a specific amount of time. The combination of these effects allows for a simple, calming environment where people feel comfortable to workout, socialize, and open up to others.
