GALLERY SPACE Falsework is a language of temporary building systems and techniques. It is the building that builds our buildings. Deployed throughout the city in the perpetual cycle of construction/demolition projects, it now constitutes a permanent presence of materials and forms in the urban visual landscape. Manufactured to be adaptable and easy to assemble on location, the structural elements adhere to a strict ethos of economy and functional design. Perhaps owing to these very principles of utility, they evoke a curiosity that transcends

their desire to be bland. In a range of mysterious, difficult to understand, even hubristic gestures, we are peripherally made witness to the very birth and death of the city and its sites. The gallery provides a frame, a moment in which to review both the familiar and unfamiliar qualities of these constructions. The physical environments that we have made reflect our investigation into these qualities as well as an exploration into their spatial possibilities and emotional resonance.

H A B I TAT

The Objective To create a 150 Sq. Ft. living space under the Gardiner Expressway near Bay and Yonge.

10

HABITAT

01 INTERIORS

The Concept The intent of this space was to capture the industrial feel of the surrounding environment, while breaking away from the horizontal lines casted by the Gardiner. This was achieved by using circular shapes that mimic the way in which the off-ramp spirals around the location while also referencing the concept of mobility (subway tunnels, wheels etc.) Levels were created to imitate the various heights of the Gardiner while also changing how one would move through this space, dividing each cylinder by its function.

01 INTERIORS

The Concept The design of this space was inspired by the tissue of the preexisting building, and is influenced by the theory that the old is beautiful and reuse it if you can. To accomplish this, all existing finishes and fittings are stripped away to visually organize the space, reveal its basic architectural layout and expose its original materials, creating a cleared palette to work with. The overall out come is a space that echoes the clients well-rounded personality and lifestyle that is both balanced between work, pleasure and entertaining. Main Floor

When redesigning this space my main focus was altering the atmosphere to create a more desirable place to work for the employees. I addressed the spaces three main issues; its lack of light, storage and noise.

added to each workspace, allowing the employees to have control and comfort. New industrial pendant lights that echo the industrial feel have replaced the old noisy fluorescents that hung overhead.

A light well on the south wall was added in order to flood the space with natural light, as naturally lit environments appear larger, airy and calm. Wall mounted table lights have been

The divider allows natural light throughout the space while still creating a noise barrier. The pockets in the divider provide storage, which helps free up the desks, creating a feeling of relaxation and organization

LINES INTO PLANES

Concrete and Plywood Concrete reception desk designed and built for OCADU student gallery. Experimenting through hand-sketching, and later with 3-D modelling software, we began to develop a language of rough geometric abstraction with associations to furniture, lighting and architecture. These explorations led to the design of this concrete desk. By using a CNC mill and its high degree of precision we were able to cut multiple stripes of offset angles. This made up the formwork for the desks front elevation manifesting our underlying concept of lines into planes.

The table top is inspired by the classic butcher block. I kept it clean and simple, so the natural beauty of the wood, would not go unnoticed. The frame is hot rolled steel tube with a brushed finish that gives of a slight sheen. The frame was made in four stages: cutting, welding, grinding, and then finishing (brushed). The welds were polished to look like the metal is one continuous piece that has been bent to hold the table top.

Whether paired, or on its own this chest of drawers proportions work well in the bedroom or living room. Composed of raw white oak and simple contrasting antique brass drawers.

04 ZINC + STEEL DINNING TABLE 72”L x 42”W x 30” H Architectural, graphic and bold, with refined lines; this table is inspired by early modern design. Function, structural ingenuity and materials where taken into careful consideration in the design of this piece. The table features a sandblasted zine top set into a steel angel iron frame that appears to be floating over the bold, architectural hot rolled steel base.

This fixture features four antique rice cooking buckets in varying diameters, clustered together. The distressed metal and original patina are bold and heavy to the eye but once lit the buckets cast a calming soft wash of light below.

05 CHEST OF DRAWERS

The base of this cabinet was designed by Jordan Maddox. Inspired by the humble elegance of Asian design combined with the subtle details of the pantry. This base is contrasting in material with clean lines and simplicity but creates an overall coherent aesthetic with the original antique pantry.

03 THESIS

S TAT E M E N T O F I N T E N T The city is a dining room, people come together in public spaces to buy, eat and to be with others. They join people whom they may already know, in restaurants and cafes that act as a space to eat and convers with friends and family. This act of gathering was simply not available before in their own small condo. Meanwhile, others come to these spaces to simply enjoy the company of strangers, and to be involved in part of the action. Growing fruit and vegetable within the city limits or even nearby has disappeared from many western cities and has been pushed to more rural areas. Today food is packaged and shipped long distances to supermarkets; the plastic wrap hides the smells and seasonal produce becomes available year round. When the food we eat, grow, or buy is local, we experience a connection to the region, the seasons and the environment we inhabit. This becomes our connection to an organic life within all the abstractions of the modern city we live in. Food in the city enriches our everyday senses of sounds, sight and smells through the ways in which it is produced, displayed and consumed. A market place can blur the boundaries between inside and outside, public and private, eating and browsing. The Post Office located at 1117 Queen Street West has occupied this plot of land for over 100 years. The building has

never been converted or transformed; it has always served as a post office. However, a post office who’s outer shell has been neglected and damaged over time, and time is starting to show. This building was a reflection of connecting people together through mail, in which this building should continue to connect people together, but through food. The term raw is conventionally used to describe the state of food but this terms can also describe design. Raw food and raw space carry an essence to simplicity and wholesomeness, but can also refer to a refined composition of materials. Raw food and a raw space embody the most direct and unprocessed state; there are no hidden elements in the processes and the success of the whole relies solely on its clarity and down to earth quality. An integration of old and new elements brings the space alive in a minimalist style that compliments an industrial but warm atmosphere powered by natural light. This space is designed to reflect what’s being sold, the consumer can meet the producer and the materials are what they are. The materials are real and raw and not disguised. Old and new are allowed to exist together in what reads as one and with its acceptance of the materials, the interior will achieve a simple air of authenticity.
