Project Description Marion is a base build Senior’s Living Development consisting of 1 basement parking level and 66 Individual Living Units (ILUs) within 2 x 6 storey towers. The ground floor contains a swimming pool, community lounge & kitchen, and multifunction room. The project is set in Leichhardt - a suburb known as the hub of Sydney’s Italian community. Leichhardt contains many restaurants, cafes, and boutique stores and is well-known for it’s vibrant street culture. The predominance of brick buildings in the area was a significant driver for the design of Marion. The architecture intends to sympathise with it’s surroundings whilst showcasing a number of subtle modern elements. Each tower comprises a primary brick box intersected by a white secondary box at each corner. The top 2 stories are recessed as a result of council controls, however this helps to reduce the apparent scale of the building from the street, and dark subdued cladding is used on these levels to enhance this recessed effect. Residents can access each building on foot via a street entry shelter. From the entry shelter a subtle ramp decline leads residents in to a lush landscaped central courtyard with seating, a water feature, outdoor BBQ and fireplace.

Project Description Norton is a base build 6 storey mixed-use development comprising 50 Individual Living Units (ILUs), 1 retail tenancy, and a clubroom. Norton is located just around the corner from Marion in Leichhardt - the ‘Little Italy’ of Sydney. The external architecture of Norton went through many design iterations, with early explorations testing an exposed brick facade. The final design consists of a fully rendered facade, and as with Marion, has adopted the strategy of using dark, recessed cladding for the upper levels so as to better integrate in to the surrounding context. During the tender phase, our office was also engaged to develop the interior design of the major ground floor internal spaces, kitchens, and bathrooms. The client’s brief asked for a gallery-like entry and interiors that promote a sense of ‘exclusivity’. Our response included a high degree of articulation to the walls and ceilings to create back-lit alcoves for seating and the displaying of art. A rectangular pendant light is repeated throughout, and the selection of dark and light tiling was adopted to add visual interest, relate to the external architecture of the building, and enhance the sense of exclusivity to the entry. The clubroom interiors follow a similar language to the entry gallery with a number of recessed alcoves functioning as TV spaces and built-in storage units. A centrepiece kitchen with a rounded waterfall bench top is crowned by the same pendant light used throughout the entry, tying together the two spaces.

Assisted extensively with interior design and joinery. Produced photorealistic renders for design exploration and communication. Assisted with development application/tender documentation. Attended client presentation meetings. General Revit modelling, family creation and documentation.

Project Description Edinglassie is a base build 3 storey, 100 bed aged care facility located in the far west Sydney suburb of Emu Plains. This project uses a ‘household’ model, whereby 20 bedrooms share a common living, dining and kitchen area, limiting the size of each household and promoting a sense of independence for the residents. Staff serve meals from each household kitchen, however residents are also encouraged to use these facilities whenever they desire. The ground floor of Edinglassie contains 1 household as well as a reception, cafe, hair salon, chapel, multi-function space, and various staff and back of house rooms. The top 2 floors contain 2 households each, bringing the total number of households to 5. The interior architecture of Edinglassie was a major focus for this project. The entry, reception, cafe and other community spaces all received a great deal of attention and detail to create a warm and welcoming facility. The household kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms were all designed to meet the client’s design guide requirements, whilst also appearing modern and homely, so as to avoid the institutional look of many existing aged care facilities.

Project Description St Columba is an aged care facility project involving the partial demolition of an existing facility and significant building additions, creating a total of 141 bedrooms (41 existing, 100 new). Located in the leafy suburb of Lane Cove, Sydney, the site is surrounded predominantly by stand alone dwellings, so the scale of this building was a major consideration. To reduce the apparent scale of the building, lighter materials were chosen for the lower 2 storeys to stand out against the top floor which is clad in a dark recessive material. Additionally the facade is articulated with a series of brick and rendered elements at varying transparencies and shades to avoid monotony and create a more domestic appearance to the building.

Project Description Urban Unification was the final design project for the fourth year (of five) Master of Architecture program at Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. It involved architectural building design, urban planning, and detailed construction drawing. The building designed here takes in to consideration the Council’s desire for a more people friendly city. This mixed-use project offers ground floor retail/ business space, two levels of commercial office space, and one level of residential units. It is located on an important corner - opposite a popular beach to the south and across the road from a significant pre-european burial site to the east. As such, the external architecture of this building has been designed in response to these two distinct site features. On the southern elevation, the facade has been designed with a playful degree of articulation and greater transparency, embodying the nature of the beach to which it overlooks. In contrast, the eastern elevation has received a more formal and moderate facade treatment - a nod to the sacred space that lies opposite this side of the building. An intermediate timber screen stretches the length of the eastern facade to reduce excessive sunlight and add visual interest to the building. The screen wraps around the building’s corner, creating a cohesive interface between the 2 distinct languages of the building.

1. An ‘L’ shaped building footprint is chosen for it’s ability to respond to two different aspects of the site - Te Puni Urupa (sacred burial site) and the Wellington Waterfront.

2. Vertical extrusion of the building footprint to create a building envelope and blank canvas for a building design.

3. To fulfil the desire for a mixed-use building program, four floors are allocated for retail, commercial, and residential spaces.

4. A key design move - the building volume is altered to create two distinct building volumes, and therefore, the ability to apply a formal and informal design language to the building exterior.

5. The two commercial floors of the taller building volume are transformed to create a smoother transition around the corner of the building and break-up the building facade.

6. The eastern facade receives a unifying timber louvre system, and the south facing facade of the shorter building volume receives checkered articulation, establishing a formal and informal character to the building, and exposing the steel structure behind.

Project Description Te Pou - the Maori term for ‘the post’ - is a physical manifestation of mythology and narrative, based on traditional Maori customs in New Zealand. It is an archival tower intended to store a collection of New Zealand’s native fauna and flora i.e. seeds, plants etc. The tower is positioned on a coastal site in a manner which echoes the traditional Maori welcoming ceremony - the Powhiri. Furthermore, in traditional Maori architecture, Pou are the central columns of a meeting house which support the roof structure and are usually decorated in great detail with carvings that depict ancestors of a Maori community. This symbolic gesture has been transplanted to this tower design and is intended to display a sense of guardianship.

Adjacent: Looking out to the Cook Strait from behind Te Pou. The composition and arrangement of the building is intended to symbolise guardianship, since the building functions as a last-resort archive of New Zealand’s native vegetation; should a catastrophic event require such a collection.

Project Description There are currently two separate buildings for the NZ School of Music. This project proposes a new, single building for this institution. Inspired by it’s local context, and by local Wellington architect Ian Athfield, this building incorporates both linear, and curvaceous design language to create a building that would hopefully appeal to users and passers-by alike. The suburb of Te Aro in Wellington, New Zealand, is characterized heavily by shed-like industrial and commercial buildings. This proposed NZ School of Music has thus been designed to reflect the shed-like character of its surroundings. A central outdoor courtyard leads visitors to the main entrance of the building. The entrance is on the central axis of the building, helping to make way-finding and circulation more efficient. A central spiral feature staircase ties the whole building together, and the stair shaft void penetrates the roof to form a chimneylike element - a famous characteristic of the architecture from the late Ian Athfield.

Project Description This project brief asked for a National Earthquake Museum for New Zealand in acknowledgement of the country’s prominent seismic history. A narrative design approach was taken for this building, intending to take visitors on a journey through the experience of an earthquake. Earthquakes are extremely unpredictable, thus a suspended walkway has been proposed that directs visitors haphazardly through an expansive exhibition space. Large, organic structural forms have been used to symbolise the strength and over-empowerment that earthquakes possess. The final narrative stage of this building sees visitors enter a small, dark room (opposite page) - a symbolic representation of what some unfortunate victims of past NZ earthquakes have encountered. This room is therefore designated as the memorial room, displaying the names of those who have lost their lives in NZ earthquakes throughout history.

Visitors are encouraged to venture on to the walkway suspended from the monolithic concrete forms - symbolising the immense power of an earthquake.
