THE EYE OF DISCOVERY TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY SPRING-2017 DESIGN STUDIO 4-AMES THE EYE OF DISCOVERY IS A PERSONIFICATION OF THE IDEAS OF CURIOSITY AND ASCENSION. THE INTENT OF THIS BUILDING IS TO SERVE AS A MULTI PURPOSE FACILITY THAT INCLUDES EXHIBITION, EDUCATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE ZONES; HOWEVER, THE BUILDING WILL ALSO SERVE AS A COMMUNITY BEACON THAT FACILITATES THE PROGRESSION OF THE INDIVIDUALS WHO INHABIT IT--HOPEFULLY PROMOTING THE SPIRIT OF THE NEGRO BUILDING OF THE 1895 COTTON STATES EXPOSITION. THE SITE ALLOWS FOR A DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE TO MAKE EXCELLENT USE OF THE SITE. THE CLOSE PROXIMITY TO PIEDMONT PARK AND HENRY A. GRADY HIGH SCHOOL MAKE IT A VERY CONVENIENT AND PROMINENT PLACE FOR PRODUCTION. THE DESIGN IS INTENTIONALLY SHAPED TO CURVE AGAINST THE SITE MAKING FOR ECCENTRIC VIEWS AND UNIQUE OUTDOOR SPACES. 2ND LEVEL VIEW TO PIEDMONT PARK

LEMEIRT PARK: NGOMIKI CENTER TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY FALL-2016 DESIGN STUDIO 3-AMES THE CULTURAL COLLECTIVE IS A DESIGN INITIATIVE AIMED AT SUSTAINING AND REBUILDING THE LEMEIRT PARK COMMUNITY. THE INITIATIVE INCLUDES THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 10 BUILDINGS INTO THE SITE—EACH CONTAINING PROGRAMMATICALLY SPECIFIC ELEMENTS—THAT WOULD INCREASE TRAFFIC AND ALLURE TO THE COMMUNITY. AS AN EXTENSION OF THE LEMEIRT PARK CULTURAL COLLECTIVE, THE NGOMIKI CENTER HARBORS THE CREATIVE SPIRIT OF THE LEMEIRT PARK AREA. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THIS BUILDING TO THE SITE, I BELIEVE THE SPIRIT UNITY AND ARTISTIC LIBERTY WILL INCREASE WITHIN THE LEMEIRT PARK COMMUNITY THEREBY MAKING THIS CENTER A STRONG CONTRIBUTION TO THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF THE CULTURAL COLLECTIVE: THE PRESERVATION OF A CULTURALLY RICH COMMUNITY. 3D SITE ,MASTER PLAN
7
SITE DEVELOPMENT THE PREEXISTING SITE IS A PARKING LOT SPACE THAT IS CURRENTLY USED BY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY TO HOST RECREATIONAL EVENTS. THE CULTURAL COLLECTIVE WILL MAKE BETTER USE OF THE SITE BY DISTRIBUTING BUILDING MASSES THROUGHOUT THE SITEAND INTRODUCING MORE GREENSPACE AND OTHER PERMEABLE LANDSCAPING. ESSENTIALLY, THE SITE WILL BE DESIGNED AS AN EXTENSION TO DEGNAN BOULEVARD, THEREBY CONNECTING TO THE PARKING LOT ON THE PPOSITE SIDE OF THE STREET. VICINITY MAP

MAPLE HEIGHTS TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY FALL-2015 DESIGN STUDIO 3-DIXON THE MAPLE HEIGHTS TOWNHOME AND APARTMENT DESIGN WAS DEVELOPED UNDER THE HOLMES AND HUGHLEY DESIGN PROJECT. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE HOLMES AND HUGHLEY DESIGN PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A MULTI-GENERATIONAL TOWNHOME AND APARTMENT DESIGN THAT FACILITATED A STRONG USE OF PASSIVE DESIGN TO REDUCE THE COST OF UTILITIES. THE DESIGN WAS ALSO ENCOURAGED TO FOSTER A SITE THAT ALLOWED FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY IN AVAILABLE HOUSING UNITS AND PARKING, WHILE MAINTAINING THE SURROUNDING WOODED VERNACULAR.
SITE DEVELOPMENT MS. JANIE H. HOLMES, OF TUSKEGEE, ALABAMA, INHERITED ABOUT 5 ACRES OF LAND FROM HER FATHER. AS TIME WENT ON SHE HAS LIVED ON A SMALL PART OF THE LAND LOCATED IN VERY REMOTE AND ISOLATED AREA IN TUSKEGEE, BUT CLOSE IS STILL VERY CLOSE TO THE UNIVERSITY AND INTERSTATE 85. THE REST OF IT IS NOW A DENSELY AND HEAVILY POPULATED WITH TREE AND SHRUBBERY. AFTER NUMEROUS YEARS, THE FAMILY WANTED TO GET IDEAS ON HOW TO BETTER USE THE PROPERTY. SOMETHING THAT WAS SUGGESTED TO THEM WAS TO PROVIDE HOUSING FOR FACULTY AND GRADUATE STUDENTS AT TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY. VICINITY MAP

TRUTH & RECONCILIATION: TUSKGEE SYPHILLIS MEMOR
21
RIAL TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY FALL-2015 DESIGN STUDIO 3-DIXON THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION MEMORIAL WAS A DESIGN PROPOSAL DEVELOPED IN COMMEMORATION OF THE VICTIMS OF THE TUSKEGEE SYPHILLIS PROJECT. THE DESIGN WAS FOCUSED MORE HEAVILY ON SITE DEVELOPMENT THAN INDIVIDUAL BUILDING DESIGN. THE DESIGN ALSO SUGESTED A SHARP FOCUS ON CRITICALTHINKING, FORM, STRUCTURE, AND REPRESENTATION OF MATERIALITY USED IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN TO INVOKE FEELINGS OF DISTRESS, SORROW, REFLECTION, HARDSHIP AND PAIN.
LOCATION THE SITE IS LOCATED ON TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY’S CAMPUS ON A SMALL CORRIDOR OF GREENSPACE BETWEEN THE KRESGE CENTER (LEFT ON MAP) AND THE UNIVERSITY CHAPEL(RIGHT ON MAP).

SYPHILLIS VIRUS
CORKSCREW
I TOOK THE SHAPE OF THE CORKSCREW TO BE THE PRIMARY OBJECT OF FOCUS FOR THE DESIGN. WITH THE RESEMBLANCE OF THE SYPHLLIS VIRUS AND THE CORKSCREW BEING SO SIMILAR, I TOOK IT AS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THE SHAPE IN THE DESIGN. I FELT THAT THE ROUGH CURVES OF THE CORKSCREW WERE SYMBOLIC OF THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS THE VICTIMS ENDURED. I FELT IT NECESSARY TO INCLUDE THIS IN THE CIRCULATION OF THE MEMORIAL.

THE WIND TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY SPTING-2016 DESIGN STUDIO 3-ARMSTRONG THE WIND. ONE OF THE GREATEST EMBODIMENTS OF THE WHIMSICAL AND CAREFREE; YET, STILL PRACTICAL ENOUGH TO INDUCE THOUGHT AND ACTION. IN MY DESIGN, I HAVE CREATED A FORM THAT ENCOURAGES MOTION LIKE THAT OF THE WIND. THE DESIGN’S PURPOSE IS TO INFLUENCE THE OBSERVER TO ALLOW THESE CHARACTERISTICS TO TRANSLATE INTO THEIR EXPERIENCE AS THEY TRAVEL ALONG THEIR OWN PATH THROUGHOUT THE STRUCTURE WHICH WHICH WILL INEVITABLYI INFLUENCE THEIR PERSPECTIVES BEYOND THE FORM. IN ESSENCE, THE STRUCTURE WILL ALLOW FOR TRANQUIL MEDITATION AND SELF-EVALUATION FOR THE OBSERVER, WHILE STILL SUPPORTING EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY. “I CAN’T CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THE WIND, BUT I CAN ADJUST MY SAILS TO ALWAYS REACH MY DESTINATION.” -JIMMY DEAN

NOMENTANA RESIDENCE
WESTERN FACADE
31
TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY FALL-2015 DESIGN STUDIO 2-AMES THE NOMENTANA RESIDENCE WAS DESIGNED BY MACK SCOGIN AND MERILL ELAM ARCHITECTS IN 1997 FOR THE ARTIST MARGARET NOMENTANA. THE DESIGN AND ITS PLACEMENT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMMEDIATE JUXTAPOSITIONS THAT A SPECTATOR WILL NOTICE AT FIRST GLANCE. THE HOUSE SITS AS A DENSE AND PRIMARILY FLAT FIGURE AMIDST SCATTERED TOWERING TREES. THE STRUCTURE ITSELF IS GENERALLY PERPENDICULAR; HOWEVER, IT CONTAINS A SINGLE ELEMENT THAT IS SKEWED TO THE NATURAL FLOW OF THE BUILDING’S STRUCTURE. THROUGHOUT MY INDIVIDUAL STUDY OF THE NOMENTANA RESIDENCE I HAVE COME TO UNDERSTAND THE SUBTLE ARBITRARY IDEOLOGY OF BALANCE WITHIN DESIGN. ALTHOUGH THIS HOUSE DOES NOT POSE AS PERFECTLY SYMMETRICAL, IT DOES SEEM TO HAVE A UNIQUE FORM OF BALANCE AND ORGANIZATION. THE NOMENTANA RESIDENCE CAN MOST ACCURATELY BE DESCRIBED AS A BUILDING THAT IS TRUE TO ITS PURPOSE AS IT IS CONDUCIVE TO ARTISTIC INSPIRATION AND MEDITATION.
