Big Sur Private Residence Main House and Guest House

A married couple in their sixties owns and lives in this 5,700 square foot home. Their children are grown with families and come to visit regularly. They would like an open concept living and kitchen area as well as an art studio where they can get away as they are artists. The couple likes to give back to the artist community by hosting traveling artists looking for inspiration and would like a guest house to accommodate the visitors.

Residential Design. Big Sur Private Residence Main House

Site Analysis Big Sur is located in Central California Big Sur is home to one thousand permanent residents. It consists of three communities, Gorda, Lucia, and Post. The Big Sur Residence is located in the Lucia community, which is centrally located. Big Sur is known as the place where land meets the sea. Beautiful mountains touch sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The area experiences wet and rainy winters with mild dry summers. Big Sur is home to many art galleries, state parks, and campgrounds making it a top tourist destination. It is, also, an artist retreat where many artists like Jack Kerovac, Robinson Jeffers, and Henry Miller have come to for inspiration. The location of the home is on the mountain side of the Cabrillo Highway. It has 360 degree views of the ocean and mountains. The design of the home keeps in mind the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Concept

The sounds of rain soothes the soul and this idea will allow the design of the main and guest house to soothe the soul day in and day out. Cool colors such as blues and greens will be used in the design creating a sense of calmness similar to the feeling of a rainy day. Natural textures, straight lines and organic patterns will emulate the growth that happens to nature after a rain storm. Reflective materials will also be incorporated in the design creating a reflection like those seen in puddles from the rain. All these elements will work together and allow for this space to have the comforts of a rainy day even when it is not raining.

Living Room

The living room embodies many of the characteristics of the concept. The muted color scheme creates the feeling of a rainy day. The cool blues allow for a pop of color amongst the greys. The natural elements such as concrete and wood continue to convey the concept of the purity of rain. The fireplace is the focal point in the space. Cast in place concrete is used to create the linear elements of the fireplace. The wood storage, a natural element, to the right creates a contrast against the starkness of the concrete fireplace. Concrete is used for its therm-conductivity and cuts heating costs in the home.

Master Suite

The master suite is located on southwest side of the home which allows the couple to relax after a hard days work and watch the beautiful California sunsets. It, also, allows the man to sleep late which he loves to do. The master suite is also separated from the other bedrooms so the couple has their own private area and a place to escape when the house is full of guests. The materials used in the master suite continue to embody the concept of rain. The natural wood floors and focal wall give a soft organic feel while the cool blues allow the room to be relaxed and calm.

Master Bath

The master bath is a place where the couple can unwind after a long day. The teal scallop tile contrasts with the white slate creating a dynamic feeling in the space, which is calm and relaxing. The natural wood cabinets allows for the space to feel organic and safe. The colors are not harsh and continue to evoke the feeling a rain. (The overhead rain shower head also helps.) This design creates a space that is both calming and relaxing to end the night, but also a space where the couple will feel energized and ready to tackle the new day.

Art Studio The art studio is a very important place in the house for the couple. They want a place they can relax, but also be inspired. The art studio is located in southwestern part of the house for the optimal amount of natural sunlight. There is plenty of storage with the custom built shelving unit to store every type of media the couple plans to work with. Also, the blackboard wall allows for quick sketches and ideas to flow.

Guest House

The couple wants a guest house to accompany the main house for the artists who come looking for inspiration. They want the guest house to be 700 square feet with a bedroom and full bath. It needs to have a living area and small kitchen. The couple would also like to incorporate an art studio, so their guests have an area to work.

Living Space This open concept living and kitchen area in the guest house gives visitors a place to call their own while traveling. The open layout creates a sense of relaxation and ease throughout the space, The color scheme of cool blue and pops of yellow convey the feeling of a rainy relaxing day. The glass tile in the kitchen creates a reflective sense like puddles after a rain storm. Visitors also have a small dining area to enjoy breakfast or dinner during their stay.

Lofted Bedroom The lofted bedroom creates an inviting, inspiring, and relaxing environment for guests. The focal wall uses old paint cans to create a creative headboard. The reclaimed wood wall brings a natural element to the design amongst the headboard. The cool color scheme of blues continues in the lofted area connecting the spaces and it continues to feels relaxing. The lofted space looks over the guest house and large windows allow guest to take in all the views. The design creates the ability for guests to be inspired without leaving the house.

Design Milk

Office, Showroom, and Pop Up Design Milk has requirements for their space. The company needs a showroom to display new exciting items from the blog and a pop up store for their new print media. These areas need to be flexible as items will change frequently. For the office, the company wants to have space for 10 employees with room to grow. Also, the company would like the office to have different areas for private and collaborative space.

Commercial Design. Design Milk Office, Showroom, and Pop Up

Site Analysis This existing warehouse is located in the Mission Bay District of San Francisco. The area has seen great growth in the last couple of years with the land development of housing, apartments and condos. Caltrain and Muni Metro are the main source of transportation and these connect to BART with service to other neighborhoods such as Hayes Valley, Downtown, and the Financial District. The area is home to notable attractions such as AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants and the future home of the Golden State Warriors. UCSF Medical has a campus in the area as well. It is an up and coming area where millennials and people alike are coming to experience San Francisco.

Concept The design will channel the industrial side of milk industry. The design will channel the old milk factories and the strong rugged efforts that took place in order to have milk delivered fresh everyday. The flow will be structured to create a sense of an assembly line in a factory. Metals, reclaimed brick and man-made materials will be used throughout to create a sense of a mechanical presence. Displays, seating and service areas will use subdued colors to create the feeling of nostalgia of past factories. Architectural elements will be large and powerful in the space to create a sense of the machines, factories, and buildings that were created during the industrial age.

Concept Philosophy Accessibility

The space will be free of clutter and allow employees, guests, and customers to move within the space. Displays of products will be functional and allow people to sit and use them as they would in their own home or space. The amount of product on the floor will vary to limit the ability for a mess to be created. The space will not look cramped, but instead inviting.

Modularity

Showroom area, Pop Up Shop, and Office will have designated spaces. Shared spaces such as the restrooms and coffee shop area will be noted.

Sustainability

Recycled materials will be used whenever possible throughout the design to promote sustainability. The doors will remain open whenever possible to create cross ventilation and cut energy use. HVAC will be updated and regulated.

Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friend. - Walt Disney

About Me

A little about me.. When people first hear the name Jordan, they assume I am a boy; however, I am a girl. This does not mean I am a “girly girl”. On a Sunday afternoon, I’d rather be sitting on the couch watching football than shopping. My ideal outing would be going to a sporting event, like a hockey game or a baseball game. I can name you every player, his number and his position on the San Jose Sharks. When there is a fight during a hockey game, I can be seen screaming as loud or louder than any man in a one-mile radius. Many people wonder how I got to be this way and all I have to say to them is my father is in a house with three women. Playing and watching sports with him was a way of keeping him sane. Besides my love for sports, I like being creative. I am not an artist, a singer, or a dancer, but I show my creativity in another way. This is why I chose to be an interior designer. When I was little, I changed my room around every couple of months. Within a year, it went from Winnie the Pooh to a pink palace to a beach bungalow and has been changing ever since. Interior Design is how I express my creativity. This aspect of art allows me to focus on many different types of media and arrange it into a single space. I can create a room with a cohesive look between a beautiful piece of vintage furniture, an Andy Warhol painting, and a person’s most prized possessions. Sports and interior design are two great loves of mine. But someone once asked me if I would change my life’s course if all jobs paid the same, and I definitely would. If I could be paid the same as a doctor, lawyer, or biologist, I would want to open my own cupcake business. I love the idea of cupcakes, they are almost like cake, but they have just the right ratio of cake to frosting. Also with cupcakes, it is easier to try different flavors and experiment with a variety of recipes. My cupcake business would allow for my creativity to take over and to create a beautiful piece of art and a delicious treat at the same time. Who does not like dessert? So this is me: a sports enthusiast, interior designer, and a cupcake entrepreneur!

T hank You

First and foremost, I want to thank my parents for the unconditional support and love they have given me my whole life. Thank you for allowing me to change my whole direction in life and supporting me without hesitation. I will never be able to repay you, but I will pick up my shoes from the family room without you asking me from now on. I’d also like to thank my sister. Thank you for being older, so I can learn from your mistakes and not have to make them myself. There are times of love and strong dislike, but I know no matter what you will always be there for me. To my grandparents, thank you for teaching me how to love, love family, love people, love things, and most importantly love life. To the rest of my family, through thick and thin, I am extremely grateful to have you in my life. To my friends, thank you for accepting me for who I am. Thank you for keeping me sane during our kitchen floor talks. Thank you for making me laugh until I cry. Thank you to my teachers, Stephanie Smith-Haenel, Ernie Mariotto, Tony Wong, and Serena Zanello. You challenged me, guided me, and most importantly gave me confidence that I was choosing the right path in life. Lastly, I dedicate this portfolio to my cousin, Aaron Moss. You were more than a cousin, you were my friend, and most importantly, you were my big brother. People say look for your presence in the little things, that is why I know you will be sitting besides me watching the Sharks, telling me they are never gonna win a Stanley Cup.
