ast issue we told you about Canadian Stock Car Racer DJ Kennington taking a run at competing in the Daytona 500, considered “The Great American Race,” in Daytona Beach, Florida. We are happy to report that DJ did in fact drive his way into the race, but unfortunately saw his day end early as he was involved in a 16-car collision on lap 127 of 200, winding up finishing 36th out of 40 drivers. Having said that, this certainly was a positive experience for Kennington and Canadian Stock Car Racing in general, as the 39 year-old St. Thomas, Ontario native was the first Canadian to race in the 500 in the last 29 years. Kennington was a long shot to even make the race, but did so in dramatic fashion by completing a last lap pass in his Lordco/Castrol-Wakefield-sponsored Toyota Camry stock car in a last-chance preliminary race, earning himself the 40th out of 40 spot on the starting grid. Kurt Busch eventually took the checkered flag, with Ryan Blaney finishing second and A.J. Allmendinger coming in third to finish off the podium. DJ took to Twitter shortly after the race thanking all who made this opportunity possible.

50 Years Strong

The Chevrolet Camaro Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

Story by Cam Hutchins, photos courtesy of Chevrolet

2

017 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro. It’s technically not the 50th birthday, but with the rebirth of the 2010 Camaro, the bad times are stricken from our memory... almost.

Second Generation 1970-1981

The brass at Chevrolet watched as the newly introduced Mustang started to outsell the Chevy Corvair. A new lightweight front-engine rear-wheel drive platform, Project XP-836, was started and variously dubbed the Nova, Panther, Chaparral, and Wildcat (later used for a Buick). The Camaro was based on a new chassis, the F-Body that would also be used for the 1968 Chevy II, renamed the Nova. This was the era of “Madmen” and the big ad campaigns, and marketing was everything. The news of a Mustang competitor coming from Chevrolet, code-named Panther, had been reported in the automotive press in April of 1965. What happened in June of 1966 is truly hard to believe, but apparently about 200 journalists got telegrams announcing an important “SEPAW” meeting....with the cryptic message of helping “scratching a cat.” Signed by a Chevrolet public relations man and “SEPAW” secretary John L. Cutter, who promised more details would follow. The next day, the same journalists got another GM telegram, claiming June 28th would be the first meeting of the “Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World.” For this “SEPAW” meeting, GM held a live press conference with 14 cities linked via telephone, a ‘first’ for a press conference. Pete Estes, the general manager of Chevrolet, announced at the meeting that all present were now charter members

of “SEPAW” and that this was the first and last meeting of the “Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World.” This was Chevrolet’s way of causing a stir and it certainly was a great way of announcing that Project XP-836 was no longer to be referred to as Panther, but keeping in the vein of the Corvette, Chevelle and Corvair, the Camaro name was announced. Two answers to the question of what is a Camaro were offered at the time... 1) a small vicious animal that eats Mustangs 2) the word camaro in the French-English dictionary was slang, to mean friend, pal, or comrade. But the press digging further, found the word camaro was not recognized in the French language, but the Spanish knew the word as a type of shrimp. Years later, GM brass would announce that regarding the whole Camaro name meaning... it was just a made-up word the marketing guys thought was cool.

First Generation 1967-1969 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

The 1967 Camaro was unveiled at a Detroit press preview on September 12th, 1966, and a week later in Los Angeles, and then went on sale at the end of September 1966. While in the design stages, a variety of models were considered including a fastback, two-seat roadster and a station wagon. Just a coupe and convertible were built, with many engine sizes from the 230 cu.in. inline 6 cylinder to a 327 V8, but also new to Chevrolet for the Camaro was a new 295-horsepower 350 cu.in. V8. The “Pony Car” Wars were truly on!

Third Generation 1982-1992

The term ‘Pony Cars.’... first penned by Car Life magazine editor Dennis Shattuck, must have irked Chevrolet. Imagine starting the trend of smaller sporty cars with the Corvair that inspired the Mustang, only to have the whole genre called “Pony Cars.” I guess it could have been worse and they could have been called “Fishy Cars” after the Barracuda..

RPO28, the “Z/28” was introduced in late December 1966, but because of it not being mentioned in sales literature, only 602 were built. RPO28 needed to conform to the Trans Am 5.0-litre cap of 305 cu. in. A 302 cu. in. V8 was created by installing a 283 crankshaft into a 327 block for a 3-in. stroke and 4-in. bore. Rated at 290 hp, it produced more like 360 hp with the single 4-bbl carb, and the optional dual-quad set-up put out The Camaro was certainly a success with 220,906 selling in 1967, 400 hp. Z/28s also had 15-in. wheels, heavy-duty suspension tidbits, an 235,147 for 68 and 243,085 in 1969 and certainly robbed sales from the 11-in. clutch, close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, and a quicker steering ratio. The first race of the 1968 Trans Am season was held in conjunction with the 24 Hours of Daytona, and Camaro had three times more places in the top ten than Mustang. The next race was won by Camaro with five top-ten finishes to three for Mustang in the over-2.0 Litre class. Camaro won the season thanks to the “no holds barred” methods of a couple of Camaro’s top privateers, Roger Penske and Smokey Yunick. The term “no-holds barred” is also known as cheating. Smokey Yunick got a hold of three Camaros, bought a spare small block and big block, and any “optional heavy-duty parts” available from Chevrolet. The cars were claimed to be Z/28s but of course, one was a big block car. Smokey claimed they all started as stock cars but with roll bars, American racing wheels and racing tires. The cars all had solid lifter engines, four-speed transmissions and posi-rear ends. The trio claimed to have set 100’s of

Fourth Generation 1993-2002 (35th Anniversary Edition) Mustang, along with its sister car the Pontiac Firebird. But GM was still dominated by Ford in the Pony Car sales wars....but not on the track. What did help snare the youth market was racing, and the Camaro got picked as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500. But the ‘racing on Sunday selling on Monday’ was really achieved by the new class of racing known as Trans Am. Starting in 1966 and first called the Trans-American Sedan Championship, Trans Am was started by Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) President John Bishop. The series was open to GTstyle cars, with over-2.0 litre and under-2.0 litre raced at the same time. It derived from the SCCA’s A and B Sedan Club Racing, and was just what Fifth Generation 2010-2015 the American auto makers needed to sell cars, lots of cars. Almost all of the lighter V8-equipped cars competed, including Mustangs, Firebirds, Barracudas, Cougars, Javelins and Challengers among others, with Chevrolet FIA records at Bonneville on a 10-mile course. The cars spent 12 days winning the manufacturers trophy in 1968 and 1969 with the Camaro Z/28. setting records; imagine punishing a big block at 8,100 rpm for hours at a time driving 175 mph! This marketing bonanza meant GM was supporting teams wanting to race Camaros and producing a car suitable for the Trans Am series. The The engines were not the only ones punished; at least one of the smallRS and SS packages were a great start but the Z-28 was the creation block cars was acid dipped, had the front fenders and hood reshaped of Vince Piggins that was a race-ready Camaro that would beat the to be wider and lower, the windshield laid back, drip rails pulled in tighter Mustangs. The COPO 9560 featured an all aluminum ZL-1 427 that was light and perfect for racing, and ultra-rare with production only being 69 cars. 1970 saw a complete redesign of the Camaro with the demise of the convertible, and the “slash” in the Z28 was slashed! What was not slashed was weight. The Camaro, as did all the pony cars, got larger, heavier and more powerful with every year, and often took on a dual role as “Muscle Car,” much to the chagrin of insurance buyers. The pressure put on the automotive manufacturers by insurance companies and the environmentalists forced smaller and smaller horsepower outputs of many cars. The Oil Embargo did not help these gas-thirsty cars, either. Ultimately with the boost in sales, Chevrolet actually put some money into designing the third-gen Camaro, and they got it right in spades. Modern fuel injection, a five-speed manual transmission and they were almost 500 lbs (225 kg) lighter than the second-gen Camaros. IROCs had 225 hp and convertibles came back in 1987.

It was the first in California and also the first Camaro to be road tested for print media,” said Hot Rod Magazine. “In the early days, Edelbrock was the first to get horsepower per cubic inch, and we were one of the few making performance increases on those small-block Chevys with just an intake manifold,” said Cary Redman, National Sales Manager at Edelbrock Performance.

The first-generation Camaros especially lend themselves so well to performance, chassis, and appearance upgrades,” he continued. Clearly, there’s been a significant swing in styling and performance standards since the original production run of approximately 221,000 Camaros in 1967—from v-shaped grilles, long hoods, and rockin’ T-tops to sports car-inspired design and extreme highs and lows in horsepower. series cat-back exhaust for sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaros powered by the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LTG engine. “Holley’s Hooker Blackheart system is comprised of mandrel-bent, 3-in. tubing in 304 stainless steel, straight-through mufflers, and 4-in., dual-wall, angle-cut tips. It uses the same mounting points as the factory cat-back, making installation a simple matter,” said GM Authority. “Beside lending the 2.0L Camaro some extra style and a more boisterous note, the system strips off 13 pounds of weight and offers maximum gains of 14.91 horsepower and 21.97 lb-ft of torque,” continued GM Authority. Even MBRP, a Canadian-based manufacturer well respected within the diesel market, has branched into the modern muscle segment. “We have always made some systems here and there for cars, but it got really serious for us when the owner and I purchased a pair of 2011 GT500 Mustangs in 2010 to build for SEMA. From that date forward, our love affair with late-model cars has only grown and our offering has followed suit,” said Jesse Rohr, Director of Marketing & U.S. Sales. From street to track, the Camaro’s gazelle-like acceleration, responsive braking, better attack in and out of corners, and agile driving experience are better than ever and only enhance the platform’s reputation of elite prowess. “The Camaro is a much different animal compared to the other cars in its category. Chevrolet does a great job emphasizing the fact that these are track-proven cars, whether it’s in a straight line or handling a road course,” said Rory Connell, Vice President of Sales at Gibson Performance. “It’s amazingly popular in the U.S. and Canada and we (at NMCA) see the embers glowing red. We’re not going to have a year go by that a Camaro isn’t in the hunt for a championship,” continued Steve Wolcott, President and CEO of ProMedia Inc. Although late-model Camaro sales in Canada are relatively small in comparison to the U.S., the aftermarket remains strong and provides enthusiasts with an abundance of performance options. The year 2010 was a shot in the arm for both the Camaro platform and the modern muscle aftermarket at large. “The fifth-generation Camaro release boosted the performance segment; it continues to be one of the leading forces in the pony wars, and its engine transplants are highly popular even today,” said Redman. “I don’t know if we’d have the exposure we have today if it wasn’t for the Camaro; it’s been integral to the expansion of the aftermarket and a huge benefit to all of us manufacturers,” he added.

When it comes to differentiating themselves among long-time aftermarket performance masters, there’s really no secret at all. “We build the absolute best systems we possibly can for a price point the average working man can afford,” continued Rohr. The sixth-gen Camaro has been a sweet spot for MBRP. “Since the 2016 model year Camaro release, our business is up quadruple digits year over year, something we are very proud of,” he added. As for Canadian-specific sales, “Sales are very strong given the economic climate in Canada and the currency rate.” The Camaro has not only outperformed and outshone, but also outlived many of its competitors, thus sealing its legacy alongside fellow automotive icons such as the Ford Shelby Mustang, Plymouth Hemi Cuda and Dodge Charger R/T. “The Camaro’s 50th anniversary is a fantastic milestone and one to be really proud of. The fact that auto manufacturers are still building performance-based cars shows how popular the segment continues to be, and Moroso is pleased to be involved,” said Thibodeau.

As famed Car and Driver magazine once said, “While the (pony) cars would jockey for the title over the intervening years, the real winners all along were the enthusiasts. Competition, as ever, improved the breed, with cars that now boast more power and performance than ever could have been imagined some five decades ago.” Cheers to another 50 Case in point, Holley Performance is now offering its Hooker Blackheart years, Camaro.

Design and Rendering How to find perfection for your next project

Story by Ben Meissner

akin to buying a spatula, and hire based on price alone. Realistically, renderings are more similar to the car build - you get what you pay for. The best (and usually more expensive) designers have gone through design school, spent years developing skill and style, and are up to speed with industry trends. They understand the do’s and don’ts of good design, and have the knowhow to design something you can really be proud of.

e’ve all seen amazing cars at shows or cruise-ins that entice our eyes to flow over every detail, while other builds barely receive our glance as we walk by. What makes one car a killer cruiser and another a total loser? Quite often it’s a result of having a good, or maybe not so good, design plan. One of the best paths to project perfection is through professional design Now compare the cost of design and renderings to the actual projand renderings. ect - how much for that extra 15 horsepower? How much for that For shop and garage builder alike, designers guide ideas through good design principles, avoiding visual mistakes and adding details that elevate projects above cookie cutter builds. If a shop is handling your build, not all builders are designers, nor can they always see your vision no matter how well you describe it. Navigating the design process develops the blueprints for a well thought-out and successful build, and renderings get everyone on the same visual page. It’s fairly easy to see why professional design and renderings are great ideas; let’s look at some things that’ll help prepare you for them. What’s it cost, and why? A simple drawing of your car by your buddy’s kid may only be $20. A decent rendering experience will run you around $400+. Some of you are already saying “if I can get it for $20 then why pay more?” Unfortunately, some think a rendering is 24 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

company neighbour? Or someone who’s been to car design school, understands good design principles, regularly attends car shows, maybe has their own build project… you get the picture. You’ll pay more for the latter, but you’re guaranteed a better experience. Do they fit your budget? Most designers can give you a clear estimate up front. Some charge by the hour, some by the project. If by the hour, make sure you understand each change you want to see is on the clock and it adds up quick. If they charge by the project, understand their salary translates to dollars per hour too. If you have a tough time making decisions, be conscious of their time investment. The more indecisive you are, the less they get paid. Keep them happy by being respectful of their time. Some artists start with a base fee and charge extra or switch to hourly past a set amount of time.

custom interior? The value of a design rendering is comparatively pennies on the dollar and cheap assurance your build starts on the right foot. It’s cheap to change a rendering, but building the car twice because it didn’t turn out right really hurts the wallet.

How do I choose a good designer? Always look at samples of their work. Make sure their style is a reflection of what you’re wanting. Many artists draw in cartoonish or “new car design” styling with more artistic proportions. If you like that artistic flair, make sure your builder can interpret that into more realistic dimensions on the actual car. Although some of those drawings look ultracool, many builders prefer to work off something with true to life dimensions. Who is your artist? Is it your cousin’s boyfriend’s “graphic designer” for a scrap book

nized; that comes with creativity. If you tell them they can take their time, they probably will, as they work yours around others that have specific deadlines. If you don’t have a deadline, make one up; it’ll work in your favour. Does the designer have other skills that add to the experience? Some designers not only create something great but can also advise how to build what they design, suggest specific parts, and can communicate with your builder (and your budget) throughout the process to keep Can they meet your deadline? Be realistic and upfront with your project timeline to make sure the artist’s schedule works for everyone. It’s not uncommon for designers to be booked 2-4 months out; if you needed it yesterday, plan on a hefty rush fee. Once you get started, it still may take 6-8 weeks to complete a project. Consensus among artists is renderings can take upwards of 20-30 hours. That doesn’t include design time - research, preliminary idea sketches, discussing those ideas back and forth with you, revisions, etc. One project a month doesn’t pay bills, so designers often work on more than one at a time. Most artists are a little unorga-

mods within what can realistically be done. As an example, seeking to be a better designer, I’ve attended car design school, street rod fabrication school, interned with a high quality upholstery shop, and worked as a rod shop fabricator. I’ve also built and raced cars for over 30 years. That education has been priceless, resulting in a greater value for my clients. Finally, remember the following Designer’s tips, and you’ll end up with a great design, beautiful rendering and, eventually, a completed car you can really be proud of. • Plan a realistic design budget; good work ain't cheap, cheap work ain't good. • Anticipate a realistic time frame. Good design takes a little time. • Communicate openly. Tell the artist what you want to see, (or that you have no idea). Discuss likes and dislikes of your designer’s ideas; that helps them create something you’ll love. • If your designer suggests some of your ideas may not work, don’t be offended. Allow freedom to explore new ideas; you may find some of them really cool! Good Luck and Happy project designing!

Ben Meissner has a Bachelor’s degree in car design, an Associate’s degree in street rod fabrication, has industry work experience in performance tire and parts sales, as a restoration and fabrication technician, service centre management and more recently as Speedtech Performance USA's creative director. Speedmaster Chevrolet BBC 454 Downdraft EFI Stack Intake Manifold System

Hurst Pistol-Grip Quarter Stick Shifter

RideTech’s Muscle Car Bolt-In 4-Link System

RideTech’s Muscle Car Bolt-In 4-Link system will provide a significant suspension upgrade to your leaf spring-equipped muscle car. These rear suspension kits resolve the leaf springs’ limitations by isolating the springing function from the axle-locating function. Links locate the axle and control geometry, while coil springs or air springs carry chassis loads, and once the leafs are removed and the links are installed, you will notice improvements in both ride quality and handling. READERS RIDES 1969 Ford Fairlane 500

Ron Struss’ 1969 Ford Fairlane 500 is a father/son fully restored project that took roughly six years to complete with everything being rebuilt including engine and interior. Parts for the rebuild were hard to come by, being sourced online and from swap meets, and after receiving a jet black Sikkens autowave basecoat, the car won first prize in its class at the 2008 Edmonds Show and Shine.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Clone Steve Wilson has owned his ’68 Camaro Z28 Clone Pro Street car for the last thirteen years and has a 94-octane 598 c.i. engine under the hood built by “Mr. Horsepower” at Ken’s Specialty Automotive. The car is a 2x3 full tube chassis with a chromoly cage with NHRA certification up to 8:50. Steve did the final assembly and plumbing on his fully street-legal car and says the future plans are to add Nitrous and to challenge for the Number One spot on the Vancouver 604 fastest cars list.
