STARTING LINES Dodge Introduces the Astonishing 2018 Challenger SRT Demon

B

ack in 2014, Dodge shocked the high-performance car world with the introduction of the 707-horsepower Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcat which were the most powerful muscle cars ever made – until now. Launching the recent New York International Auto Show week, Dodge has once again shaken the high-performance car industry with the unveiling of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. The new Demon will be powered by an incredible 840horsepower, supercharged 6.2L Hemi Demon V8 engine which is the world’s most powerful factory production V8. The car is NHRAcertified to run 9.65 seconds @ 140 mph, which makes the Demon

the fastest ¼-mile factory-stock car in the world. Additionally, the Demon is the world’s first production car to lift the front wheels at launch and has set the world record for the highest wheelie by a production car from a standing start, at 2.92 feet. The Demon remains a potent street car, but every component on the car was scrutinized and optimized for weight, capability and durability on

the strip with a long list of street-legal production car industry firsts including front passenger and rear seat delete, Nitto street-legal drag radial tires, available Direct Connection engine controller, and Drag Mode Launch assist, just to name a few. Production of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon begins later this year at the Brampton Assembly plant. MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

Ford’s Mustang is Now the Best-Selling Sports Car on the Planet For the last 50 years or so, the Ford Mustang has been one of, if not the, best-selling sports car here in North American and now, according to Ford analysis of HIS Markit new vehicle registration data in the sports car segment, the Mustang is now the best-selling sports car on the entire planet. The Mustang sold over 150,000 units worldwide in 2016 with almost 45,000 of those being sold outside of the United States. The surge in sales has been largely attributed to big sales gains in the monstrous markets of Germany and China, with the latter seeing the Mustang become their best-selling sports car since its 2018 Ford Mustang

Classic Muscle Gordon Mathies’ 1970 Dodge Charger R/T

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

G

ordon Mathies is a true car enthusiast. Being involved in the car hobby gives him the opportunity to tinker and express his creativity away from his day job helping to run the family’s burgeoning nursery operations in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Mr. Mathies has always loved muscle cars, as he was a kid during their heyday. The 1970 Dodge Charger R/T is one of the most popular muscle cars from the period and stood apart from

the rest with its squared off and seemingly chiseled body lines, coke bottle shape, and aggressive stance. “I bought this car because when I was a teenager, this car was the epitome of cool,” said Mathies. “This was the car to own!” This example was originally from Manitoba and a rusty basket case when Gordon found it a decade ago. The lower quarter panels were all rotted out so had to be replaced, as did the trunk pan, but luckily the floor was in good shape. The fenders were also banged up and showed some mild surface rust, but they straightened out okay. “The car is basically just like how it came out of the factory,” explained Mathies. “I have changed a few things, but the block, transmission, and rear end are all date coded correct. It’s not numbers matching, but that is a tough thing to find when it comes to the MOPAR cars from this era, as guys blew stuff up racing them.” Under the pinned steel hood of this example resides the 440 cubic-inch, 4-barrel MagnumV8 engine. This power plant may not be the most powerful offering available that year, but it does offer enough horsepower to meet the needs of all but the most hard-edged performance driver. “I built this car as a driver to original specifications, so this is a stock engine rated supposedly at 375 horsepower,” Mathies

says, “but they never made that much power. It is probably closer to 300 horsepower. To get the bigger number, you would have to put a much bigger cam in it, like that fitted to the six-pack cars.” Factory literature claims that the engine produced 480 pound-feet of torque, which provides sufficient performance to appeal to the hooligan seated behind the wheel without breaking the bank at the pump, or requiring an excessive maintenance schedule. “The Magnum 440 has always been a reliable engine, and the TorqueFlite transmission with 3.55 rear gears works very efficiently.” For a car with 134,000 miles on the odometer, it still runs strong and is surprisingly rattle free, but that only reflects on the owner’s diligence when it comes to maintaining his pride and joy. “The interior is all original except the seat covers, and no reproduction pieces were used. The bumpers are also original. I added custom billet Magnum 500 wheels to give the car a look that I prefer, but I have the original steel wheels and hubcaps for this car. If I was planning to show it I would swap them out.” Luckily, the car came relatively complete, as parts for the 1970 models are among the most difficult to find. In fact, Mathies has never been able to find original seat cushions for the car and no one makes them for the 1970 model, as it featured a seat design that was only used for a single year. “This car had the factory air-conditioning option, but I haven’t installed it as I don’t have all the pieces, and they tend to be very difficult to find. With a little time, energy, and extra money I would be able to solve this problem.”

Cloaked in a deep Burnt Orange and sporting a black vinyl roof and tail stripe, this Charger R/T really stands out from the crowd, as most of the Chargers that have survived seem to be black, green, or unfortunately given the bold orange and Confederate

flag treatment made famous by the General Lee star car from The Dukes of Hazzard television show. The mid-size two-door coupe is one of the most distinctive of the designs offered by Chrysler during the period when the muscle cars ruled the streets. This example is a second-generation car, which includes models from 1968 through 1970. The design incorporates a double-diamond coke bottle profile with curves around the front fenders and rear quarter panels. 12 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

HISTORY: ELWOOD ENGEL

Elwood Engel managed styling of Mopar muscle cars

Engel’s design for the Chrysler Turbine cars had stylistic links to his previous Ford and Lincoln projects. Story by John Gunnell

M

uscle car designer Elwood Engel came up via the GM styling studio system, but made a mark at Ford and Chrysler. He was one of a few budding designers accepted in a work-study program, and one of even fewer to get through it. George W. Walker and Joe Oros, whom he met in 1939, did the same. During World War II, Engel was a map maker in the U.S. Army. He stayed in touch with Oros who, after the war, attended the Cleveland Insitute of Art, where George W. Walker had studied. Oros then went to work at an industrial design firm that Walker had started, and he recommended hiring Engel. Walker’s firm had Nash and Baker-Raulang, a body company, as clients. Oros did automotive work for both firms, and Engel designed alarm clocks, tractors, shoes and appliances. He was brought into a Ford project when ex-Studebaker man Dick Caleal showed Walker a design for a “Shoebox” Ford. In 1947, Walker won a Ford contract and ended his association with Nash. After that, Engel and Oros focused on car design. Ford ran a competition to seek alternatives to an in-house design by Bob Gregorie. Walker, Engel and Oros made a full-scale version of a model at Ford’s Dearborn plant and incorporated their ideas, along with some of Gregorie’s, to create the ’49 Ford. C. Edson Armi’s The Art of American Car Design (Pennsylvania State University, 1988), said of Engel’s contribution to the groundbreaking car, “In the end, the exceptional appearance of the Ford may owe less to Loewy’s team and to designers like Walker and Gregorie than to experienced modelers at Ford, to Walker’s assistants Oros and Engel and to the collective design process.” 42 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

Engel was considered an important designer and was featured twice on the cover of Automotive Industries magazine.

“Lincoln Continental.” That car became the basis for the 1961 Lincoln Continental, rather than a new two-door, two-passenger T-bird. Just after the Continental came out, Walker turned 65 and retired. Everyone thought that Engel or Oros would be his replacement, but Ford unexpectedly picked Eugene Bordinat. Engel started looking for a new job. Engel’s friend Walker had political power at Detroit’s Recess Club. Chrysler president Lynn Townsend was one of his connections. At Chrysler, styling director Virgil Exner’s Valiant design had rubbed Townsend the wrong way. In addition, Exner had suffered a heart at-

Engel was a people person and Oros wasn’t. Elwood loved playing practical jokes and telling risque stories and generally goofing around. But the two men were very close. Engel was put in charge of Lincoln and Mercury, tack and his absence set off some infighting led by his lieutenant Bill while Oros was in charge of Ford car and truck designs. Schmidt. A meeting that Walker set up between Engel and Townsend led to the former getting hired as Chrysler’s vice president of design. Engel and Oros came up with competing designs for the 1958 T-bird Engel started working at Highland Park in November 1961. and Oros’ four-seat car got the nod. However, the “Stiletto” roadster that Engel’s team created caught the eye of Ford President Robert Exner had hit it big with his Chrysler dream cars and “Forward Look” S. McNamara, who saw the Engel team’s clay model and asked designs. He tacked towering tail fins on late-‘50s Chryslers, DeSothem to add rear doors. He then decided that it could be sold as a tos, Plymouths and Dodges and improved Chrysler’s image—and

heart wasn’t in it and every day he came in must have been torture.” The other designers liked Engel though. Co-workers said Engel had an uncanny eye for the “commercial viability” of designs. He was also known to pinch pennies with the “boys” in the modeling studio. “He wanted to go out and play and be a big shot,” Brownlie said. “He’d walk into a studio and, if things were going well, you wouldn’t see him again for days. If things weren’t going well, he’d be in there absolutely raising hell.”

The ’69 Dodge Daytona with its wind-cheating nose and giant rear deck lid spoiler was approved by Engel.

Engel oversaw the design and development of the famous 1963 Chrysler Turbine cars (of which 50 were loaned out to 203 families for public testing). The two-door hardtop is said to look very much like his original design for the ‘61 stiletto T-bird that ultimately became the ‘61 Lincoln Continental. He used the fibreglass model of this car to illustrate his design preferences to the Chrysler designers and emphasize to them that tailfins were out, but

sales—for a time. But the Chrysler tail fin era died out in six years and it was Engel who was credited for replacing fins with a new slab-sided Lincoln-like look. Like Harley Earl, Engel was good at delegating design work to teams of stylists. He would then fine-tune their clay models with his touches. According to Mike Lamm’s interviews with Chrysler designers Bill Brownlie and Carl Cameron, this was far different from the Exner approach where the designers were expected to style cars the way that the boss would have done it. Exner continued to have an office at Chrysler after Engel was hired as his boss, but Bornlie told Lamm “I’m sure his

the design didn’t really point to the future at Chrysler. It was just something unto itself.

High Impact colours were used on many of the Mopars that Engel had a hand in creating, including this 1970 Dodge Charger.

Chrysler vets like designer Dave Cummins believe cars like the ’65 Plymouth Fury sum up what Engel was about. He liked crisp fender lines and a lot of gimmicks like slab sides, wrapover roofs, hidden headlights and airfoil grilles. He liked to adorn cars with lots of brightwork and badges. In the mid-‘60s, he liked the boxy look with razor-tip fenders that characterized the Continental from 1961-1968. After 1968, he championed a smooth, rounded “airplane fuselage” look that Bill Brownlie and Richard Stas began with the ’68 Charger. Some of the noteworthy Chrysler Corp. cars that Engel played a role in designing include the Gen II ’63 Valiant, the ’68 Charger, the ’69 Dodge Polara, the ’70 Challenger and Barracuda, the ’72 Satellite and the ’72 Imperial, but he approved all of the Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth designs of those years. He appeared at least twice on the cover of Automotive Industries, a trade magazine.

Engel actually retired from Chrysler in 1973, but continued to work as a consultant on cars like this ’74 Plymouth Sebring Plus.

Engel actually retired from Chrysler in 1973, but he continued to work as a consultant until some management changes that took place in June 1974 changed things. Cars as late as the ’76 Imperial continued to reflect his design legacy. On June 24, 1986, Elwood Engel died of cancer.

READERS RIDES 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible

Rob Vetter’s 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible was brought to Jellybean AutoCrafters in Surrey, B.C. after a previous restoration attempt left it needing some work. Among other things, Jellybean fitted the car with a Ridetech strong arm suspension system and Viking dual adjustable coilovers which is an ideal setup to handle the high-horsepower 396 under the hood. The car features Wilwood disc brakes all around and gets taken out regularly by Rob and his wife for local cruises.

1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Ted Wingrove bought his 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass back in 2016 from a lady in Maple Ridge, B.C. who had bought the car back in 1971 and was keeping it in an underground parking lot for the past several years. Luckily for Ted, she decided she no longer wanted to pay for the parking spot and decided to sell. The all-original beauty features a Rocket 350 V8 under the hood and is an absolute blast to drive.
