Beauty Beaumont

Jeff Friesen’s 1967 Beaumont is a multi-generation family car Story by Jordan Allan, photos by Barry Kluczyk

T

here is something to be said for being able to trace your car all the way back to its original owner, especially when it comes to classic muscle cars. Car guys typically put a lot of stock into the phrases “one- or two-owner car” as it provides some insight into the vehicle’s past and provides you with some idea of the life it lived before it came to you. Although not technically a one- or two-owner car, Jeff Friesen is able to trace his 1967 Beaumont all the way back to the beginning. The car was purchased brand new by a friend of Jeff’s father, who promptly let him know that if he ever wanted to sell he would be very interested. One day a call came in from the local Chevy dealer who let Jeff’s father know that the car had been traded in and to see if he was interested. Jeff’s Dad immediately went straight to the dealership, bought the car and used it as the family car. In the late 1970’s, Jeff’s brother bought the car from their Dad and began to modify it. The car was originally a 283, 2-bbl carb, powerglide car with a black painted top, but Jeff’s brother thought it was time to change some things up and asked their other brother to help him install a 4-bbl carb and an intake to get some more power. Soon after, the car was painted a different blue colour and had a velour interior which left Jeff’s Dad less than pleased, but alas, it was no longer his car. Jeff lived in Michigan at the time where he ran a custom car restoration business with famed NHL goalie Ed Belfour. Jeff and Ed had grown up together in Carman, Manitoba, and after Ed had made the NHL, the pair decided to open the shop in 1992 with Jeff running the business with a full crew building hot rods and muscle cars for all sorts of customers.

years later, in the mid-1980s, Jeff’s brother sold the car to their cousin who owned it until 2010. After Jeff’s Dad passed away that same year, he decided to ask his Uncle if his cousin still had the car and was told it had been sitting in his driveway for the last two years. Jeff inquired with the cousin asking if he would sell it, as it had some sentimental meaning, and a couple of phone calls later, the car was his.

12 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

Late in the fall of 2010, Jeff and good friend Rich Koffel headed back to Manitoba to pick the Beaumont up and bring it out to Michigan to begin another restoration. Once they returned, Jeff immediately got to work restoring the car, with Ed’s shop handling the paint and body while making regular trips to Koffel’s shop to build the engine with Rich and his father Dave. The Koffels were well-known for their engine building expertise and together with Jeff built a 454 bigblock Chevrolet V8 motor that pushes out an impressive 550 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque. Jeff then spent the next year-and-a-half working on a complete, frame-off, nut and bolt restoration, going to a Marina blue exterior colour and a black vinyl top.

Following the years of recession down in the United States, Jeff and Ed decided it was time to make the difficult business decision and shut the shop down. Jeff moved back to Manitoba and took a position with Piston Ring Service where he still works today and continues to enjoy his car, taking it to local car shows and out for regular cruises. Jeff says the car will stay in the family, perhaps even one day going to his own kids, but until then, he will continue taking it to work when weather permits, just as his father did all those years ago.

BEAUMONT HISTORY

T

he Beaumont actually has quite an interesting original story dating back to the 1960s, where, to promote automobile manufacturing in Canada, the Auto Pact (APTA) created provisions which prohibited sales of certain American-made cars north of the border. General Motors’ response was to start offering certain makes of cars manufactured in Canada primarily for the Canadian market such as the Beaumont and Acadian. The Beaumont began as a trim level of the Acadian line from 1962 to 1965, which was based on the Chevrolet Chevy II (Nova). Acadian Beaumonts were sold at PontiacBuick dealers, were not available in the U.S., and beginning in 1964, were based on the Chevelle A-Body platform. By 1966, GM decided to use the Acadian name strictly for the Nova-based car, with the Beaumont becoming a standalone name based on the Chevelle. The cars boast a logo that is based on the classic Pontiac arrowhead logo but with two red maple leaves or fleur-de-lis added, to ensure their Canadian heritage. By 1970, GM Canada decided to discontinue the Beaumont and Acadian and began selling the Chevrolet Chevelle and Pontiac LeMans. 14 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

This downtown Green Bay, Wis., car collection is now in its second year of operations and muscle cars are a big part of creator Red Lewis’ vision to showcase a century of automotive history.

The modernized and renovated building also features a contemporary event space with a reception hall area, catering and dining facilities and an executive conference room with multi-media capabilities and a touch panel control system. Meetings and events held inside The Automobile Gallery help support the continued operation of the nonprofit enterprise.

True American muscle cars, starting with Pontiac’s mid-1964 GTO, played a major role in at least one decade of motoring history, and other cars in The Automobile Gallery, such as a ‘57 Thunderbird with a 245-hp Y-block V8, a ‘60 Corvette with a 270-hp “dual quad” engine and a 2004 Cadillac XLR roadster with a 320-hp DOHC V8 provided other forms of neck-snapping performance.

Admission fees to the gallery and event rental spaces also help support the facility. There is also a Guest Vehicle Program through which cars owned by private collectors from across the country can be displayed for several months. Guest Vehicle cars accepted so far have included a very interesting Pontiac GTO “resto-mod” owned by Bob Cloud and built by “Mr. GTO” Jim Wangers.

Paul Faby, The Automobile Gallery’s Acquisitions Director, realized from the start that American muscle cars had to be adequately represented in the collection of about 75 cars, of which some 45 are on display at any given time. He was charged with finding significant models in the right colours, such as a yellow ’66 Mustang GT fastback and a Hugger Orange ’69 Camaro. Red Lewis considered it important to the success of the Gallery to showcase milestone cars in colours that would make the public’s viewing of the cars an exciting experience. Lewis, a successful car wash operator and car wash equipment maker, amassed a major car collection and then donated a number of cars to The Automobile Gallery to get it going. To house the collection, Lewis completely updated the circa1958 Denil Cadillac dealership and turned it into an art gallery-like environment where cars of all 22 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

It seems that Wangers and Cloud were having a conversation about the late-model GTO based on an Australian Holden model and Cloud asked, “What if GM had done it right?” This led to collaboration between the two that created an Orbit Orange ’69 GTO Judge with many styling and performance updates. Wangers added a duck tail spoiler and a fibreglass lower scoop. Under the hood is a Pontiac 428-cid V8 that’s bored out to 505 cu. in. and fitted with aluminum cylinder heads. The car has a TR6060 six-speed transmission and a nine-inch rear end with 3.73 gears. Wangers adopted the Corvette C6 front suspension and then added entirely updated upholstery and interior features. A number of Pontiac publications and other magazines have featured the car.

Here is a ’70 LT1 Corvette on one of the unique singlepost lifts.

Probably the most striking visual feature of The Automobile Gallery is its black-and-white colour scheme with red accents throughout. Seven cars are displayed on unusual single-post lifts that are powder-coated white to blend in with the walls and give the impression that the cars perched on them are flying over other cars. This has led to some interesting gallery-within-gallery exhibits like the one featuring three muscle cars on and under one lift, or another showing several groupings of different Corvettes scattered around the main gallery. The Automobile Gallery has regular gallery hours 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday and can be seen at other times by appointment. Visit the Website for current times and admission prices or call 1-920-437-9024. You can also email to inquire@ theautomobilegallery.org.

hile the Grand National Roadster Show with its long history and name implies it is geared towards top-shelf roadsters and high-profile hot rods, there are a plethora of muscle cars displayed along with many other types of vehicles. Held January 26-28 at the L.A. County Fairplex in Pomona, California, we attended this year’s show to find out what new trends are happening in muscle cars, and which builders are on the cutting edge with this advanced technology. The ‘Summit’ is a ’71 Camaro created by Hector Cisneros and his crew at Bill Dunn’s One Stop Shop in Huntington Beach, California. While there’s an LS engine under the hood and an updated driveline, it’s the interior that pushes the envelope. Contoured bucket seats with perforated leather inserts provide comfort for the driver and passengers. The dash is reworked with a new gauge cluster, integrated surround for the double DIN head unit, and a reshaped console that’s covered with the same tan leather. Louisville, Tennessee is home to Bobby Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, and this ’65 Mustang Fastback, dubbed the ‘600 T.A.’ is notable for its Trans Am-styled

stubby front air dam. A look more akin to road racing Camaros of that era, Alloway used it here and made us wonder why nobody else had thought to meld the two. Under the hood, a small-block Ford built for the Trans Am series in the ‘80s by Robert Yates is backed by an American Powertrain 6-speed manual transmission, updated suspension and Billet Specialties one-off wheels with Michelin rubber. Rolling on HRE Performance Wheels normally associated with European and Japanese sports cars, the black ’70 Dodge Charger built by SpeedKore Performance in Grafton, Wisconsin is noticeably lower than stock thanks to its revised suspension and Michelin tires. But the news here isn’t the interior by Gabe’s Street Rod Custom Interiors in San Bernardino, California, with its custom seats and dashboard. It’s the machined door handles and fuel filler cap on the exterior, along with modified front fenders made of carbon fibre. Used in race cars for its strength and weight savings and a favourite among import performance cars, Speedkore’s extensive use of a carbon fibre hood, bumpers, and front fenders is new for muscle cars of this era.

design with performance and aesthetic upgrades to bring this classic muscle car into the 21st century. A 545-hp, 427 c.i. crate engine powers these hand-crafted cars, with this particular example receiving custom stitching from Elegance Auto Interiors on the Sparco seats, matching door panels, and trunk insert. Retina-searing orange is what we called the hue on the Chevelle from Braun’s Muscle Car and Hot Rod Restoration, a departure from boring OEM-matching, period-correct paint. Under the hood, things are much more subdued, with black, gray, and high-temp coatings to provide contrast with its exterior. While the ‘70s added considerable heft to the Chevelle, in this scenario with the powertrain it has, the temptation to just want to drive it hard is overwhelming.

What looks like an early Hemi is actually an LS-7 aluminum 427 CI with Hilborn fuel injection. hood, chromed wheelie bars out back, and no grille in front to impede the view of its CNC-machined fan shroud, it definitely caused a stir. While the gorgeous scoops in the ‘C’ pillars are likely the handiwork of Aaron Takao of Takao Metalworks, with body and paint by Dan Brown, and interior by Gabe Lopez, it’s all in the details and then some.

Also from Braun’s is their earlier ’66 Chevelle, a work in progress. You’ll note the twin turbocharged LS engine protruding above the front fenders, along with the rear tires, which appear much too tall and wide even with rear quarter panels that have already been widened to accommodate them. Yes, it’s a ’70 Pontiac TransAm from Stones Metal Shop in Gardena, California and its CEO, Brian Stone, is also the builder. The late-model Hemi engine with either a 6:71 or 8:71 supercharger leaves no one who has seen it without a lasting memory, and the carbon fibre front end is in keeping with another trend

If you like what appears to be an early Hemi with fuel injection, take a closer look. It’s actually an LS-7 aluminum 427 CI with Hilborn fuel injection, machine work by Greening Auto Company, and fabrication by Orange, California’s Cambra Speed Shop, the vehicle’s builder. No, it’s in a ’55 Chevy 210 Sedan dubbed ‘Roxanne’, not a Barracuda, Belvedere, Challenger, or Charger, but the point is that it easily could be. Another of the innovations we discovered was Edelbrock’s E-Force Supercharged LT 416 crate engine with 851 hp and 780 lb-ft of torque. Based on a brand-new GM LT1 Gen V aluminum block with a forged and balanced Manley crankshaft, Manley forged H-beam connecting rods, and Manley forged aluminum pistons, the 10.5:1 compression ratio produces safe, reliable supercharged performance with 93 octane pump gas. An all-new Edelbrock E-Force supercharger system and DP-3C intercooler tops it off, and the engine can be had as a long-block only, complete with all the accessories, or with the accessories and electronics included. While this engine package is debuting now, we can’t wait to see it installed in a SEMA Show-bound first-gen Camaro that’s already underway. While Cotati Speed Shops’ Zane Cullen wasn’t saying much about the Camaro in his display, its tube frame construction, full roll cage, oversized fuel cell and an injected engine that might be more at home in a sprint car said it all. Working head and tail lights, D.O.T. tires, an exhaust system and a passenger seat are indications this car may spend some of its time on the road when it’s not on the track or in a show. What is described on Classic Recreations’ website as ‘the newest iteration of the Shelby GT350, the GT350CR Pro-Touring Shelby Mustang’, features an updated

Classic Recreations’ GT350CR Pro-Touring Shelby Mustang. we recognized earlier. It’s the extreme wide body that really captivated everyone who saw it. No doubt it also draws attention to the Schott wheels and the Baer brakes. The ease with which LS engines can be transplanted into almost any vehicle wasn’t lost on Pat Tobin or his sons Sean, Jason and Devin when they were doing a body-off restomod on their ’65 2-Door Post GTO in a 1-car garage. However, the Tobins decided to keep their Goat all Pontiac, relying on a 428 engine bored .040-over, an Eagle crank with a 4-in. stroke, JE dished and forged pistons, and ported Edelbrock 72cc heads. Now producing 520 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque out of 434 cubic inches, Bob McCray Performance, who built the engine, also performed its tuning and certification.

The selection of a full-size Dodge wagon to receive all these upgrades is something of a surprise, but a good one at that. Last but not least is the ’68 Dodge Charger belonging to Johan Eriksson of Mora, Sweden. While few details were provided, it’s gratifying that trends we’ve identified today, and the appearance of the cars in magazines such as ours (as well as coverage of the Grand National Roadster Show by the media throughout the world), goes a long way in encouraging builders like Eriksson wherever they reside. Finally, the O-ring kits allow you to remove and reinstall your Atomic AirForce intake, and the distributor timing lockout kit comes standard with MSD Circle Track HEI distributors but will work with almost all GM HEIs.

MAHLE Enters Performance Piston Ring Market MAHLE Aftermarket Inc. has announced the creation of MAHLE Performance Rings which will be the brand under which they will sell their performance products in a specialized product category. MAHLE’s performance rings have been available through MAHLE Aftermarket Inc. but will now be offered in a new performance package which makes them easier to distinguish. SAE9254 steel is used as the base material for the rings, which allows for HVOF coating and PVD coatings to be applied in the application process. This allows MAHLE to offer advanced designed second rings from the same steel. For more information please go to www.mahle-aftermarket.com

READERS RIDES 1969 Ford Torino GT Convertible

On Valentine’s Day back in 1970, Dick Smallenberg was driving his Malibu home when a drunk driver hit him head on, writing the car off. Making the best out of a bad situation, Dick was excited at the opportunity to look for his favourite car, a Ford Mustang. After checking out dealerships across B.C.’s Lower Mainland, Dick was having no luck finding a Mustang he liked, reluctantly settling on purchasing a 1969 Ford Torino GT Convertible after some pressuring from his friends. Now, having owned the car for the better part of 50 years, Dick sees that his reluctance was unwarranted and is still the proud owner of the Gran Torino which has been used in many weddings and parades throughout the years.

WANT TO SEE YOUR VEHICLE IN THE MAGAZINE? Send in a few hi-res photos of your classic car or truck with a short description of around 60-80 words and we may include you in the Reader’s Rides section at the back of Muscle Car Plus.
