All-New 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 Most Powerful Street-Legal Ford Ever
W
hen the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 arrives in the fall, it will carry with it the title of being the most powerful street-legal Ford ever with a whopping 700-plus horsepower rating. In order to make that power, it features a 5.2-litre aluminum alloy engine that is built by hand, and a 2.65-litre roots-type supercharger with an air-to-liquid intercooler tucked neatly in the V8 engine valley. Mated to the supercharged V8 will be a first-in-class, Tremec seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which is able to shift smoothly in less than 100 milliseconds. The transmission will offer a number of drive modes including normal, slippery, sport, drag and track and also will boast a line-lock feature and RPM-selectable launch control via the Track Apps. In order to harness the great power it will produce, Ford will use an active chassis technology, track-oriented Michelin tires and Brembo brakes. In addition, the Shelby GT500 will also feature a new electronic power steering unit, lighter weight coil springs and next-gen MagneRide suspension. Two handling packages will be offered including the Handling Package which includes adjustable strut top mounts and spoiler with Gurney flap, and the Carbon Fibre Track Package which features 20in. carbon fibre wheels with 0.5-in. wider rear wheels, custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, adjustable exposed carbon fibre GT4 track wing and splitter wickers with an integrated drive plane. Additionally, the rear seat is deleted to reduce weight. In terms of appearance, the new GT500 will build on the Mustang’s already great looks with alternations made to improve performance. MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2019
Large angular grille openings and muscular hood combine to provide an aerodynamic-led design, while the wider front fenders and stance housing allow the car to sit low and wide which gives it a truly aggressive appearance. The car will be available in three new colours including Red Hot, Twister Orange and Iconic Silver. Inside, the GT500 offers a purpose-built cockpit with race-inspired premium materials used throughout, such as the carbon fibre instrument panel applique and new door panel inserts made of Dark Slate Miko suede. Supportive Recaro racing seats are available while a 12-in. full-colour LCD instrument cluster is featured in order to keep the driver informed of many vehicle parameters. An 8-in. Father/Son Project Cameron and Matthew Grant’s 1970 El Camino
his 1970 El Camino is certainly a family affair and a tribute to the value of great customer relaT tions. Cameron and Gary Grant have made names for themselves as master restoration experts of primarily Chevelles for Cameron, and Camaros and Impalas for Gary. Where they meet is this El Camino. Gary bought this car for himself but was too busy with customers’ cars to build it, and Cameron had previously restored a GM of Canada documented 1970 LS6 454 M22 El Camino.
Before Cameron’s son Matthew was dabbling in JDM tuner cars, as a 14 year-old it was decided they should build a project car together. For every hour Matthew worked on the car, Cameron would work an hour as

well. This El Camino was right up Cameron’s alley as he had personally had many LS6 Chevelles as well as three COPO 427 Chevelles. Curiously, Cameron’s true love is the first-gen Monte Carlos, and he has personally had 29 of them. Deciding which car to buy was a challenge, as you don’t want to throw tons of time and money at a car that has limited appeal, so Matthew’s budget of $4,000 was a challenge. Uncle Gary came through in spades, offering his unrestored bench seat small-block four-speed El Camino for what he had into it, $3,500. He also threw in a pile of parts he had for the project as he was happy to see his nephew get into the restoration game.
In the bed of the El Camino was a complete big block dual exhaust set-up. Cameron was concerned with Matthew putting too much money into a smallblock El Camino, and the decision was made to make a recreation or clone of a SS 454 El Camino. The El Camino started as a “Fathom Blue” 300-hp 350 cu. in. with a Muncie M20 four-speed transmission and a 3:31 12-bolt rear end. The interior code was 755 for the black bench seats. Matthew decided to keep the interior black, and chose Cranberry Red (paint code 75) with black SS stripes. All the small-block chrome was deleted, and the SS badging was added. An SS dashboard was used instead of the small block’s “Sweep”-style dashboard. For looks, a vinyl top and non-functioning cowl induction hood were added. For the last 15 years, Cameron has been doing frame-off rotisserie nut-and-bolt restorations to either 1970 Chevelle 454 cars or 1969 COPO 427 Chevelles. Borrowing uncle Gary’s rotisserie meant Matthew could work on his car while Dad still worked on his own projects. Matthew was quick to learn all the tricks Dad could show him. This is where Cameron’s strong ties to the suppliers and tradesmen in the auto restoration businesses really paid off. Upon hearing of Matthew’s project, the first person to step up was Travis Brown from Sharp Touch Restorations. He donated a free paint job, including the disassembly, removing the fenders, doors, hood and tailgate to paint all the pieces individually and also spray all the jams. It also took extra time as he had to lay out the hood stripes and paint the black on the tailgate. Parts were donated by Uncle Gary and Richard of Hot Rods and Classics in Chilliwack. Al Stoltz went through the M20 Muncie transmission and rebuilt what was necessary at a budget price to help Matthew out. Then there was Randy Hillier from B & W Metal Cleaning who does Cameron’s media blasting. Randy allowed Matthew to come in after hours and blast his frame, rear end and the chassis on the

Luckily it came with one NOS quarter panel and an NOS outer wheel house. The frame was quite solid but had the usual rust pitting. After media blasting the frame was skim coated to look better cosmetically. Matthew was taught everything he knows about bodywork from Cameron and he was amazingly quick to pick up the skills it took Cameron a considerable time to learn. Taught how to weld by Dad, Matthew welded up all the small holes from the small block trim and small block emblems. Matthew also welded the quarter panels on and the outer wheel houses, and he also welded patches into the bottoms of the original fenders.
Richard of Hot Rods and Classics also helped out big time with the engine, as he knew of an older El Camino running a 402 cu. in. with 1966 Big Block heads that was about to get an LS stuffed in her. Cameron and son went to see Bob Saunders and got to see the mill run perfectly and it was not burning or leaking oil. Technically a 402 (often referred to as a 396) it looks just like a 454, and with the addition of a high-rise manifold and a new Quick Fuel Technology SS-780-VS 780-cfm Street Carburetor, it performs as well as an LS5 454. The SS dash was also from a customer who wanted a pristine dash instead of the one he had with the big ‘70s cut-out for the stereo. The old dash and massive stereo stayed with Cameron, and upon installation in the El Camino got a period correctlooking AM/FM with disc. A tach was also added and that along with many other parts were from Cameron’s big stock pile of Chevelle parts. The car got all-new suspension pieces and new brakes including discs up front. Many groups promote the importance of “spring cleaning” one’s vehicle, but Car Care Council remains a leader in the cause. A non-profit organization dedicated to educating motorists about the importance of regular vehicle care, maintenance, and repair, the Council broadcasts its message through an ongoing “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign. This is particularly relevant this time of year, when coming off a harsh winter season across Canada.
Just as importantly, this time of year vehicle owners are especially eager to break out the buckets, wash rags, and auto care products to treat their prized rides to a proper show-quality shine. “The value of properly detailing your ride can’t be understated,” says Billy Longfellow, VP of Design & Engineering at Air Design USA. “I’m just as quick to slip my own truck in the shade and give it a thorough detail as I am the award-winning vehicles we showcase at events like SEMA or the L.A., Detroit, and N.Y. auto shows,” he adds. “For years, we’ve turned to brands like Mothers and Gtechniq for a deep clean and perfect finish, quality products that can give any vehicle owner a professional-grade result right from their own home.” With far too many auto care products to name, take a look at the next new pages for some new products from some trusted names in the aftermarket. were holding their own in an event featuring some of the finest hot rods in North America. In particular, we wanted to see if any were trending upwards, becoming more popular beyond the usual herd of pony cars as the subject of a build in this segment. Prior to that, we went to the SEMA Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council’s (MPMC) annual Media Trade Conference in Santa Ana, California, to see what new parts were being rolled out for the most popular muscle cars. We were surprised what we found, and we think you will be too.
ost of us associate Hagerty with collector car insurance, but they also track the value of collector cars, and who is buying them. Although their Muscle Car Index had minimal changes in the past year and this segment hasn’t had a huge boost in values, the big news is that they are attractive to younger buyers, who are now more active than older buyers. While it’s unknown whether muscle cars will appreciate, the fondness younger generations of enthusiasts COOL MUSCLE CARS have for them speaks well for their future. One of the first that caught our eye was Kent Matranga’s ’62 Chevy With this in mind, we ventured out to the Grand National Roadster Bel Air. Built by Andy Leach at Cal Automotive Creations, we wonShow in Pomona, California, where we viewed which muscle cars dered if the grille was reworked to fit the lengthened hood and front fenders, or vice versa. The deck lid was reworked to incorporate a subtle spoiler, something that you may not notice when the 638-hp LS-9 is revved up. A Bowler Performance T56 6-speed and 9-in. rear end with a four-link rear suspension and Ridetech coilovers, along with Corvette IFS, are fitted in the Art Morrison chassis. We’re not sure Bob Florine’s ’57 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon is the answer, but the 700+hp Jon Kaase Racing Boss9 Shotgun stroker engine with a Borla eight-stack injection system and a FAST controller will sure get you where you 24 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2019

mile in 14.3 seconds at 98 mph. The T/A was getting attention for being as fast or faster than the contemporary Corvette. An improved Endura nose with an “egg-crate” grille met 1973 U.S. government crash standards. The T/A’s interior was redesigned with molded lower door panels. A big change this season was release of the optional ($55 extra) “chicken” or “big bird” hood graphics treatment created by stylist John Schinella. A hot Super-Duty 455 V8 option evolved from Pontiac’s racing program. Not to be confused with the regular 455, SD 455s were low-compression, extra-horsepower V8s made in limited quantities. Out of 4,802 T/As, only 252 were SD 455s. The 310-hp V8 in these cars had reinforced webbing, big forged-steel con rods, special aluminum pistons, heavy-duty lubrication with dry sump pump provisions, a high-lift cam, four-bolt mains, a special intake, special dual exhausts and high-revving valve train goodies. SD 455s did the quarter mile in 13.54 sec. at 104.29 mph.
Styling changes for ‘71 were minor. High-back seats were new. The sticker price rose to $3,578 and production dropped to 2,116 units. The 455 H.O. with a four-barrel, 8.4:1 compression and 335 hp was standard, as was a heavy-duty three-speed with floor shift. A racing version called the BFGoodrich’s “Tirebird” ran third at Watkins Glen. The possibility of dropping the Firebird was raised in 1972 when changes were minimal. Due to regulatory changes instituted by the U.S. Government, the production lines—already halted by a strike—re- For 1974, Firebirds had a new shovel-nose appearance, slotted tailmained idle. Motor Trend made the Firebird “Car of the Year” and called it the “best combination of pure performance and handling in the U.S. Grand Touring market.” In a survey, 1,500 Japanese car enthusiasts picked it as the best car in the world. The Firebird beat the Mustang by a slight margin and whipped the ‘Vette.
hood and hood decals. The biggest V8 was initially a 400-cid 185-hp four-barrel. At midyear, a 455-cid 200-hp four-barrel H.O. V8 was reinstated. It included a tuned exhaust system with dual “splitters” behind the converter. The 400 did 0-to-60 in 9.8 sec. and a 16.8-sec. quarter-mile. Pontiac built 26,417 T/As and 857 H.O.s.
For 1975, GM added catalytic converters. T/As got a new roof with a The 1976 T/A had a twin-section grille with a mesh insert in a sloping larger wraparound backlight. The grille had new rectangular running front panel with single round headlamps in square bezels. All Firebirds lamps. The $4,740 T/A had flares, air dams, air extractors, a shaker featured body-coloured urethane bumpers. Brake systems met new federal standards. Axle ratios were lowered for fuel economy and V8s idled slower. There were upgrades to cooling and air-conditioning. The seats had vertical ribbing, with tri-section seat backs. The door panels had twin, vertical ribbed sections. A brake fluid level sensor was new and Turbo-HydraMatic was required in California. In February 1976, at the Chicago Automobile Show, Pontiac introduced the Limited Edition T/A priced at $5,553. It featured Starlight Black exterior body finish, gold pin striping, gold interior accents (including gold anodized instrument panel appliqués and gold steering wheel spokes), gold grilles, gold headlight liners, gold honeycomb wheels and other distinctions. The car was promoted as a commemorative edition for Pontiac Motor Div.’s 50th anniversary.

The Limited Edition models were inspired by a 1974 show car themed after black-and-gold John Player racing cars. The package was designed by John Schinella and featured a big, gold hood “chicken.” Hurst built the cars on an off-line basis and 643 had Hurst Hatch roofs. This T-top was de-
vised for the 50th Anniversary Grand Prix. There were problems adapting it to T/As. Production was delayed until April so only 25 percent of the Limited Editions had that roof. CARS magazine named the 1976 T/A “Top Performance Car of the Year.” Editor Joe Oldham said it was the “best looking” T/A. In April 1976, Car and Driver wrote about the T/A as America’s fastest car. That was not exactly true. The 455 T/A finished second behind the L82 Corvette. The 1976 T/A had a top speed of 117.6 mph. It did 0-to-60 in seven seconds and the quarter mile in 15.6 seconds at 90.3 mph. Pontiac built 37,016 base coupes and 7,099 H.O.s, Limited Edition cars were 1,628 and 533 T-tops with the 400-cid V8, and 319 coupes and 110 T-tops with the 455-cid V8. New front-end styling for the ‘77 F-cars featured quad rectangular headlamps and an “aggressive” grille. The T/A package was again available. The Limited Edition T/A became the Black Special Edition, which had about the same features. Pontiac built 68,745 T/As. Of these, about 54,000 were base models and the rest Special Editions. Total model-year production of Firebirds rose to a record 155,736 units and the big boom in T/A the 403-cid 185-hp Olds L80 V8. A hotter engine was the L78/W72 popularity really helped. Total model-year production of Firebirds rose to another new record of 187,285 units. The T/A’s contribution took another big leap up to 93,341 units. What a contrast from the early ‘70s!
A third and final facelift for Gen II Firebirds came in 1979. Pontiac described it as “a broad new forefront cast in durable urethane.” Fourwheel disc brakes were a new T/A option. In a return to the past, raised white letter tires could be ordered as a separate option without the WS6 package. Engine options included the 4.9-litre four-barrel V8 for a credit and the higher-performance T/A 6.6-litre four-barrel V8 as a $90 option. Most 10th Anniversary T/As had the base L80 (403-cid) V8 with Turbo-Hydra-Matic, but a few were produced with the T/A 6.6 linked to a four-speed. A limited number of the 7,500 10th Anniversary T/As built were also Official Pace Car Replicas patterned after the car that paced the Daytona 500 stock car race on Feb. 18, 1979.
All-new ultra-aerodynamic Firebirds joined the Pontiac lineup in January 1982. Available in three distinct models — sporty base coupe, performance-oriented T/A and sophisticated luxury SE — each Firebird had its own identity. Base engine was a 2.5-litre EFI four, while the SE had a 2.8-litre V6. T/As were powered by a 5.0-litre four-barrel V8. A four-speed transmission was standard. Extensive wind tunnel testing on the Firebird resulted in an excellent drag coefficient that made it one of the most aerodynamic cars ever produced.
For 1980, Firebirds got lightweight dual exhausts and new low-friction ball joints. New options included dual front radio speakers, extendedrange dual rear speakers and an ETC seek-and-scan radio. During the year, a wheel cover lock package and audio power booster were added to the options. The electric clock now had a quartz mechanism. T/A engines included the L37 4.9-litre four-barrel V8, a 5.0-litre V8 in all California-built cars, and the 4.9-litre Turbo V8. The gas crunch put a crunch on sales and only 50,896 T/As of all types were built.
The Gen III Firebirds were a hit with critics, but production of T/As was modest: 52,960 in 1982, 31,930 in 1983, 55,374 in 1984, 44,028 in 1985, 48,870 in 1986, 32,890 in 1987 and just 20,007 in 1988. In 1989, Pontiac offered a T/A 20th Anniversary model, but production of the flagship Firebird fell to 15,358 and hit 2,507 the next year. In the spring of 1990 the Firebird took on its new “1991” look, but it didn’t help much. Despite an exterior overhaul to improve aerodynamics and more muscle, the sales picture was bleak at just 6,343 T/As.

READERS RIDES 1972 Chevrolet C-10
A
ndy Wallace bought his stock 1972 Chevrolet C-10 long box back in 2015 with the intention of only upgrading to disc brakes for some extra stopping power. Naturally, this turned into a full, frame-off restoration with everything being redone including custom suspension, frame, new interior, new wiring and a 350 fuel-injected small-block crate motor with help from buddies Lucas and Tom. Andy painted the truck at his shop in Maple Ridge, B.C. and sees the truck as an ongoing project that keeps getting better and better. Today, he drives the truck – which he nicknamed Colonel Mustard – a ton, putting over 10,000 km on it in 2018 alone, and enters the odd local car show, taking home the best engine bay award at the 2018 DW Poppy Car Show in Langley, B.C.

BILL & JOHN W.'S 1958 Chevy Cameo
A History all its own. In 2014, brothers John and Bill W. bought Bob C’s 1958 Cameo after being in Bob’s family for 54 years. Bob inherited it from his Dad who bought it when its owner beat him in a drag race in Kansas City, MO. Sometimes, a truck’s history is as straight as a drag strip. Other times, it’s as curvy as a scenic byway. Either way, we want to keep them going for miles and years to come.
