Big Bad Galaxie Gazzola’s 1968 Ford Galaxie 500XL
T
his is not your typical Muscle Car story, nor is it your typical muscle car. In 1968, Dearborn Ford in Kamloops, B.C. was having a big NASCAR Days promotion, and this 1968 Ford Galaxie 500XL was the showpiece in the showroom. The first owner fell in love with it and bought it on the spot, but had to wait a week to get the car out of the showroom. The car was well loved from day one, but it came with the optional 3x2-barrel carbs, and with the gas crisis of the early ‘70s, that may have led to it being up for sale in Vancouver in 1975. There were probably lots of other Galaxies for sale at that time as well. Judging from the cars seen at many car shows recently, one might think that Galaxies were very rare. There are lots of Fords at car shows today, Mustangs, T-Birds, Fairlanes, but even 1969 Thunderbirds are not common. The ‘68 Thunderbirds almost all came with the big thirsty 429 and the gas crisis did not just see these cars sold cheap; it ensured many of them were crushed and sent off to become Toyotas. Before the popularity of the smaller Mustangs and Fairlanes, Ford sold a huge number of the full-size Galaxies! In 1961, before Ford started to sell the smaller 1962 version of the Fairlane, it sold well over 250,000 two door full-size cars, not including convertibles! In 1968, the Galaxie sold well with almost 120,000 fastback coupes being sold between the 500 and the 500XL models, with the XL making up 50,000 of that number. You see a lot of 1968 Mustangs at car shows today, but they only sold just over 40,000 Fastbacks out of a total production of 300,000 1968 Mustangs. Car magazines of the era were lukewarm at best regarding the big 428 500XL. They said it was great for the family to go on highway trips, but they did not care for the handling and did not seem to be impressed by its 0-60 mph sprint of 8.2 seconds according to an early 1968 Car Life magazine road test, a non SCJ 428 by the way. Not too shabby for the ‘60s where the 1967 Ford Mustang GT/A 390 did 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds, the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 did 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds, and the 1968 BMW 2002 took 11.3 seconds to get to 60 mph.
Story and photos by Cam Hutchins
Mark Gazzola was young and had a bit of cash and wanted to buy a cool car. He was still open to anything and told his boss he wanted a Chevelle, a Charger or a Galaxie XL. The boss’ brother-in-law had a used car lot on West Broadway in Vancouver, and had all three cars Gazzola was interested in. The Chevelle was a 1969 SS 396 with a light blue convertible top, and the Charger was a 1969 RT 440 Magnum. They wanted way too much money for the Chevelle, $3,600, way out of the league of Gazzola, who was making $2.72 per hour. The Charger was only $2,000 but you could see the road from inside the car and from inside the trunk. The Galaxie XL was originally for sale for $2,800 but since he knew the owner’s brother-in-law, he got it for $1,500. On the bill of sale, he wrote in big block letters ‘no warranty included or implied due to price considerations.’ Gazzola had to have his Dad co-sign the loan, but his Dad had factory ordered a 1968 LTD and was very keen on his son owning this car. Gazzola drove this car as a daily driver up until 1990 and it was in fantastic shape with almost no rust. This XL was a huge step up from Gazzola’s previous cars, a nonrunning Pontiac Parisienne and a 1966 Ford LTD four-door hardtop. The best thing Gazzola has to say about the “More-Door” LTD was that the clock kept perfect time. The car had the unusual feature of air rushing in through the roof moulding and the headliner would flap. When he was visiting his future wife, her Dad would paint over the rust with white fence paint while the car was parked in front of the house. So the XL was certainly an upgrade for Gazzola, as it was a very wellequipped car, and possibly all that extra weight made it too heavy for the other young guys who wanted these cars for drag racing or other feats of speed. But this car was plenty fast and comfortable. It was equipped with the 428 Super Cobra Jet with tri-power carburetion and a C-6 transmission. It came with front power disc brakes as all 428-equipped Galaxies did, but it also had air conditioning, a console-mounted tach, power windows, seats, locks and even the trunk! The interior also boasted a tilt steering wheel, AM-FM radio and four speakers, two up front in the doors and two on the

The new paint got the benefit of a bit of pearl in the the signal for the radio, and the rear window required two defrosting fans! final clearcoat and really shows off the plentiful chrome trim. The car also was equipped with a tilt wheel, clock, and the convenience group, which included a vast array of warning lights – brakes, seat belts, door ajar, and low fuel. It also came with a the standard gauges of the day, warning lights...and just gas and the 140-mph speedometer with the futuristic km/h indicated as well. More on that later, but the compass really lets you know that they threw everything at this car. Stage 3 Stewart Warner gauges, mounted under the dash, include ammeter, voltmeter, vacuum, water temp, oil pressure, and trans temp that were with the car. These gauges were no longer available after 1971. In the mid ‘90s, the water temp gauge failed, and after phoning Stewart Warner, they told him they stopped making those gauges in 1971 and hung up. So the alternative was getting it repaired for $175. Someone mentioned E-bay and Gazzola went onto E-bay for the first time and found a new water gauge in New Jersey for $35. But this was still a performance car at heart. The big 428 mill came with the 427 LeMans cast iron long tube headers, extra cooling capacity, and coolers for the transmission, power steering and the engine oil. It came with the extra-heavy-duty suspension, with front and rear anti-sway bar. The car was equipped with the automatic load levelling system and a limited-slip rear axle. His father’s car appeared rust-free but once when it was in for an oil change, the lift crushed through the rotten frame. Whereas Gazzola’s XL is based on the LTD and had basically a beefier version of the LTD frame, with a big X-frame crossmember that goes from torque box to torque box. The frame was rust free when the car was taken off its daily driver duties and put in for fresh paint. This car was not frame-off restored, but rather had an engine rebuild and new paint. The interior had been cared for since new. There was no rust and the car got a fresh coat of a more modern Ford Blue paint that looked a bit better than the original code X: 12 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022
While the engine was out and in for a rebuild, the mechanic, a friend of Gazzola’s, left a message to call right away. Fearing the worst, Gazzola returned his call to find out that there were some pretty cool parts inside his engine. Wondering if the owner, between the original owner and the car lot, had stuffed in a 390 or something, Gazzola asked what was up. The engine appeared to never have been taken apart since that factory, the serial number proves it is a “Q” code, but the bottom end shows it has the big 427 LeMans connecting rods that have cap screws, not a nut and bolt rod. With the internet, it was easy to find info on these seemingly strange connecting rods that was not available so easily in the early ‘90s when the rebuild took place. The 428 Cobra Jet used standard 428 con rods with heavier bolts and nuts, while the Super Cobra Jet 428’s used the 70-gram heavier and stronger “LeMans” style con rods with 12-point “Cap Screws.” The crankshaft had also been balanced.

After paint and engine rebuild, the car was not daily driven and looks as good today as it was when new. Keep in mind this is not a restored car. The interior is original, with the exception of a couple of small repair panels in the drivers seat. Other than the paint and newer-style radial tires, she is all original. Any little problem that ever came up on the car was repaired right away, so all gauges and switches work as they should. The car recently was dipping a bit and sometimes would bottom out on a bump, so new replacement springs were ordered and Gazzolas’s friend at the shop said they had to find special heavy-duty spring compressors to install the springs as they were so taut.
writers walked back to look inside his car. He saw the speedometer and called his group back, “hold on there boys, we got a car with a 220 ‘mile pa hour’ speedometer.” Gazzola corrected him that it was in kilometres per hour, but he was having none of that! They looked over the car with a fine-toothed comb and even took down the serial number and checked out the frame. They told Gazzola, they had never seen an XL equipped like his, with all the options his car came with.
Towards the end of the show around 4:45, Lindsay Wagner came around in a golf cart with her entourage looking at the cars that were left. Gazzola got his friend’s wife to go over and ask her to come see his car. She The advertising back in the day was kind of cool. One full-page ad noticed the B.C. licence plate and mentioned she was filming a movie in in a 1968 Motor Trend shows a dark blue or black 500XL on the salt or dry lake at sunset. The title is smudged over to the left and states “Horizon Grabber.” And all the text looks like it has been pulled over to the left and then slopes down to the right more and more for every line. Some of the finely crafted advertising jingo includes: “Ford knows that great road cars are made, not born” or how about “You can make it 428 cubic inches big, to take the measure of a long, black line on the salt or snakes over the purple mountains in the distance.” In its second life as a pleasure cruiser, in 1998, Gazzola drove her down to the big Fabulous Fords for Ever at Knott’s Berry Farm in LA for the year when the Galaxie was featured. There were 150 Galaxies and they got to drive in first before all the Mustangs and Cougars. But there were only two other 1968 Galaxies there; both were XL’s like Gazzolas but only had the 390, not the big 428. They were both from the San Francisco Bay area, and a father and son owned them. Gazzola remembers them thinking that he must have trailered the car all the way from Canada. It was a big show and Parnelli Jones was there signing autographs and Lindsay Wagner, the Bionic Woman, was a Ford spokesperson and also signing autographs, and the line up was too long to even think of waiting in it. Gazzola took a photo of them and that was good enough. There was a group of journalists walking around the cars looking for cars suitable to feature in magazines. Gazzola was sitting behind his car ready to chat with anyone and noticed only one of the seven or so
14 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022
B.C. at the time and was flying back that night. Gazzola, the ever-friendly Canuck, said they would be home in a week and she should come over to his place for a home-cooked meal. Wagner smiled and said she would have to run it by her publicist, and while this was going on, his friend’s wife snapped a photo of him putting the move on the Bionic Woman, a photo he still has up in his den. Mark and his wife Marlene are still waiting for Wagner to come for dinner, and a ride in the big bad Galaxie!
Icing on the Cake
The Amazing 1941 Willys Americar, raced hard and put away loved! Story and photos by Cam Hutchins
T
here are a lot of cool cars that can be owned by one couple, but this couple has three 1955 Chevy rag tops, a super rare 1968 Beaumont SD 396 rag top, a Hemi-powered 1956 Ford pickup, as well as all sorts of other cool rides. So this 1941 Willys Americar Gasser that runs high tens, is the icing on the cake! Willys Overland made a very attractive car from 1937 to 1942 which replaced the not very attractive Willys 77 built from 1933 to 1936. The 1941 Americar is considered the most attractive of the 1937 to 1942 model years and helped Willys Overland get on top of their precarious financial situation and avoid bankruptcy. The 1942 model production was cut short due to World War II, but the Willys General Purpose vehicle, the Jeep, saved Willys Overland. Willys Gasser-style drag cars have been a favourite of Hot Rodders and racers for a long time. With many still seen regularly at drag strips and car shows all over, one might get the impression that they built tons of them. In 1941, Ford built more coupes alone than double the 1941 Willys total production of just 22,000, including four-door sedans and station wagons. The Name “Americar” was only used in 1941 and 1942. The Americar was powered by a Willys “Go-Devil” 134 cu. in. engine that turned out to be the automaker’s greatest asset. A modified version of this engine was used in the WWII Jeeps. Surrey’s Gordy Koropchuk has been building cars for many years, and with the help of lots of friends, always finds the coolest cars to build. Each car has a cool “find” story, except maybe the ‘68 Beaumont SD 396 convertible, unless 16 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022
buying it right out of the showroom is in some way, strange. It was just bought to replace their 1964 Malibu convertible, so they could more easily pull a ski boat. His wife Linda did not want to be driving a station wagon! The Willys “Find” story goes like this. Bruce Anderson in Prince George buys a really great 1941 Willys Three-Window Coupe out of Tacoma. He finds a fibreglass front end and sticks it on, then loses interest. Gord tries to buy it but some lucky guy on Vancouver Island scoops him. Lucky for Gord, the lucky guy runs out of luck and is short for cash. So after only owning the car a couple of weeks, he sells it to a very lucky Gord! Linda is lucky too; she won a trip from A&W to go to the Barrett-Jackson auction one year, and a private A&W car show for them and all their carnut friends, which is lots! When the car arrives at Gord’s incredibly wellequipped shop behind his house, the body is in fantastic shape. The amazing body and paint guy, Bodo Reichert, takes a liking to it. Maybe because Bodo loves painting cars, and is very meticulous. So any car that does not need more than a light sanding before he gets to spray it, is a real gem! Bodo’s incredible skill also paid off in the car’s final colour. Bodo is the one who came up with the “Hot Inferno Red” colour after helping Gord and Linda pour over lots of samples. The car was to be built as a Gasser style but equally suited for street or strip. One can only

have so many stock cars, so the Willys was stripped down and gotten ready for a specially-built 454. Gord had the mill from who knows where...”just sitting around, I guess” says Gord. They bored it out to 468 cu. in. and topped it with a 6-71 blower and dual quad Holley 650 carbs. A TH400 Automatic trans with B&N shifter was built to handle the power, but still be drivable. This is perfect, as the car was only to be raced a few times a year, but street driven every Friday night during cruise season! Once again, lots of friends helped out, including Darrell Brulotte who was going to be the guy who raced the beast on the track, and helped do pretty much everything. Starting up front with the first part of making a “Gasser,” is the front straight axle with leaf springs. Out back is a 12-bolt posi rear end with 4.10 gears and coilover shocks to help keep the rear end hook-

and the car has a set of rear slicks for its track time. The rear drag wheels and slicks were bought at the Cloverdale Swap Meet back in the day! The car got front discs but kept the stock rear drums that came with the rear end. It stops fine for a car that, brand new, only weighed 2,115 lbs. You add a big motor and tranny, and full roll cage,
ing up on the track. The frame got some strengthening but they are pretty stout from the factory. A roll cage was installed with removable side bars and the battery was relocated to the trunk, like a proper race car. But unlike a proper race car, the trunk was fully upholstered! Al Decker of Bitchin Stitchin’ came by and did most of the interior work right in Gord’s garage. The bench seat is the original that came with the car, but was newly upholstered. The car has an aftermarket Stewart Warner speedometer and tach mounted in the centre of the dash, just like the stock Willys placement for the original speedometers. Auto Meter gauges sit under the dash to keep all systems in check. There is even a tilt steering column, again from Gord’s vast stockpile of good parts.
but subtract the weight of the steel hood, and you still have a pretty light car, compared to 1941 Fords that start out at around 3,000 lbs.
The proof is in the pudding or the time slips at the track. This car consistently ran high 10’s or low 11’s and it looked damn good doing it. One of its first shows was the Goodguys First North West Nostalgic Drags in 2005, where it won most Nostalgic Race Car! The car was even on the BCHRA’s car show t-shirts for the Club’s 50th and 60th anniversaries and consistently turns heads The choice of wheels is really dictated by the strength needed on whenever it drives by with its low menacing exhaust burble. That the track, but up front is the iconic “Torque Thrust”-type five-spoke, is what lucky sounds like!

’63 Polara
Big muscle and a face you don’t forget Story and photos by John Gunnell
K
evin Pfaff listed the things his ’63 Dodge Polara two-door hardtop was known for. He wrote of its sound, its dual quad carburetor set up, its racy stance and its glitter-withclass ‘60s Mopar-style vinyl interior. Then, he thought for a minute and added — “Oh, and the front end; you know, this car has a front end ‘face’ that’s very hard to forget.” Kevin bought the Dodge Polara, put a bit of work into it and quickly took trophies and awards at several local car shows. A printer in Ripon, Wis., by trade, Kevin put a lot of energy into detailing the exterior and interior of the car. In addition to the cosmetics, he did a drive train rebuild (with a couple of aftermarket upgrades) and also had the push-button TorqueFlite automatic transmission gone through so it works the way it should. With a 119-inch wheelbase, a 208.1-in. overall length and an almost 4,000-lb. curb weight, the ‘63 Polara hardtop might be hard to think of as a muscle car today. However, road tests recorded back in the era the car was new could easily change your mind. Motor Trend’s technical editor Jim Wright tested a Dodge Polara with the 383-cid 330-hp V8 and he managed do the 0-to-60 mph trip in a mere 7.7 seconds. The quarter mile took him 15.8 seconds, by which time the big, open-top Dodge was moving at 92 mph. “Barring all-out drag-race engines, there aren’t many that can stay with the 330-hp “383” in acceleration,” Wright wrote in his article. The Polara was considered the top trim level “Dodge” back in 1963, when the even fancier Custom 880 was thought of as, well, a Custom 880 instead of a Dodge. The basic Polara two-door hardtop listed for just $2,806 and weighed 3,280 pounds. That was with the base 318-cid V8. Wright’s test car

Kevin’s car is set up very similar to Wright’s test car, except that it has crank windows. Still, it’s probably tipping the scales at around 3,600 lbs. Single-stage enamel paint in very-near-factory Polar White has been sprayed on the Polara’s body and the eye-catching two-tone teal and white interior has seen a lot of tender
loving care to bring back its great new-car look. The car is one of just 8,716 made and 545 of those were built with slant six engine power. A V8 was under the hood of the rest of the cars, but only a relatively few had big-block engines stuffed in there. The low production total could explain why Kevin doesn’t see a lot of cars similar to his Dodge at shows, or even in backyards and allies. He has spotted a few, though. They are easy to pick out when you see them. They have that face that’s hard to forget!

The Serial Number (Vehicle Identification Number or VIN) is on the left-hand side of the dashboard and visible through the windshield. There are 13 symbols in the VIN. The ’70 AMX got new rear lamps and a restyled front shared with Javelin performance models. It featured a flush-with-the-hood grille and a redesigned bumper that housed “mutant square” parking lamps. A horizontally-divided, crosshatched grille with four very prominent, bright horizontal mouldings had AMX lettering at its centre. It incorporated circular rally lights. The bumper had an air scoop system to cool the front brakes. The restyled hood had a large ram-induction scoop that took in cold air. Inside were new contoured high-back bucket seats with integral head restraints and a completely redesigned instrument panel. An exclusive Corning safety windshield was also available. An all-synchromesh “four-on-the-floor” transmission with a Hurst shifter was standard. Performance options included the AMX 390-cid V8 with 325 hp and a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission. Very desirable today is the code 391-392 “Go-Package,” that was available on 360-powered AMXs for $299 and on 390-powered AMXs for $384. It included power front disc brakes, F70-14 raised-white-letter tires, a handling package, a heavy-duty cooling system and a functional Ram-Air hood scoop. The metal dashboard plates affixed to 1970 models were numbered 014469 to 18584. This was the final year for the original type AMX. Although the nameplate was to be used again on Javelin- and Hornetbased models, the two-seater AMX was the true sports car and the real high-performance edition. Eric Dahlquist wrote up the ‘70 AMX in the December 1969 edition of Motor Trend and summed it up as “one of the better constructed cars around.” The test car had the optional 390-cid V8 that produced 325 hp at 5,000 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. This 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 was apparently bought off the lot and not special ordered, but Rich Woods, who bought the car for Darby Motors, says it is a cool car but if it did not have the flat-black hood with hood scoops and Rally wheel options, it would really be a “Blah” car to look at. Woods is one of the list of buyers for this car since it was found, forlorn and disrespected in a heated garage of the little old lady who had bought it for her ungrateful son. The car was discovered by Chuck Pierce from New Hampshire in 1985, with only 4,100 miles on her. Parked in August of 1970, it had all the original bits it came from the factory with and they are still with the car except for the oil filter, battery, mufflers and tires. It went on to be part of the Tim Wellborn Muscle Car Museum which 34 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022
