The World Loses a Legend as Vic Edelbrock Jr. Passes Away at the Age of 80 The car community recently lost one of its most iconic figures, as Vic Edelbrock Jr. has passed away at the age of 80 from complications suffered from a recent cold. Edelbrock originally took over the Edelbrock company after the sudden passing of his father, Vic Edelbrock Sr., at the age of just 26 in 1962. The brand itself started in 1933 when Vic Sr. opened a repair shop in Beverly Hills where Vic Jr. would begin working during summers starting at the age of 12. After attending the University of Southern California on a football
scholarship and graduating with a degree in business, Jr. started working at the company full time. After his dad’s passing, Vic Jr. took over the company that at the time only employed ten people, and had since turned it into one of the largest aftermarket parts companies in the world. Shortly after Edelbrock had passed, the company website published a tribute that read “It’s with deep sadness that we announce the untimely death of our visionary and leader Vic Edelbrock Jr. Vic passed away this evening from complications following a recent cold. His passing was peaceful and in the company of his closest friends and family. The Edelbrock Fun Team sends their deepest condolences to his family and will always hold him in our hearts.” Our thoughts and prayers here at Muscle Car Plus and the entirety of RPM Media are with the Edelbrock family.
World-Renowned House of Kolor Selects 360 Fabrication as First Shimrin 2 Location in Canada House of Kolor is one of the biggest brands in the world when it comes to the custom automotive space, begun back in 1956 by the godfather of automotive painting, Jon Kosmoski. Since then, it has become the pinnacle of automotive paint for auto aficionados and celebrity collectors alike. Almost as legendary as the brand itself is House of Kolor’s rigorous vetting process which demands that only the best of the best can paint with their products. The company, whose highly-regarded Shimrin 2 mixing system produces 2,800 colours under the House of Kolor brand, is carried by fewer than 100 custom shops around the world. Given the level of exclusivity, it comes as huge news that the company has selected 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford, B.C. to be the one company in Canada to carry the full Shimrin 2 mixing system. World-renowned custom painter Mike Taylor, who has done work for celebrities in the past such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Bush, and Kevin Costner, will be visiting the 360 Fabrication shop to demonstrate his painting skills to the 360 painters. Jellybean AutoCrafters Fall Colours Tour “Island Edition” This year’s version of Jellybean AutoCrafter’s Fall Colours Tour is a driving adventure that goes to some of Vancouver Island’s most beautiful roads and sights. All roads are paved and most are “off the beaten path”. The tour is designed for classic cars, hotrods, etc. but several newer specialty vehicles are allowed to participate. The theme of this year’s tour is Vancouver Island’s past, before about 1939. Each day will bring at least one stop of interest along the way including, in some cases, a guided tour. The route book also includes historical notes to keep you informed of the sights you’ll see and entertained along the way. To ensure everyone is relaxed and refreshed participants will be staying in a gorgeous hotel right on the waterfront where there are many areas to do some sightseeing and a wonderful water front boardwalk. To enhance the “mystery and adventure” in the tour, each participating vehicle will receive the route information for that day right after breakfast on each day. A limit of 25 vehicles is enforced to purposely keep it small and relaxed in an effort to give it more of a friends type feel.

Mopar Turns 80!
Chrysler’s iconic aftermarket parts brand celebrates a significant milestone Story by Cam Hutchins, photos courtesy of Mopar

017 marks the 80th anniversary of Mopar. The most hardcore Ford or Chevy fan knows the trademarked “Mopar” we all are familiar with started with the need for a name to put on cans of Chrysler Motor Parts Antifreeze. The “Special Activities” council worked on the names and logos for Chrysler and came up with Mopar and first used a bright purple arrow that was promptly rejected. The term “Mopar” was made from combining the words “MOtor” and “PARts” and appeared early in the 1920s, but became its own brand in 1937. It was the branch of the Chrysler Corporation that dealt with original parts for Chrysler products including Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and DeSoto. The term Mopar was not widely used in Canada until the late ‘70s... we had the Canadian equivalent, “CHRYCO.” The final design was deemed to need a “Mr. Mopar” character, and even a Camel and all the “MAD MEN” brilliance was thrown at the public to help it be remembered. The story of how we got from a can of antifreeze to the most powerful four-door sedan available in 2017 is quite a ride. The Mopar or CHRYCO parts were all built for Chrysler use with little focus going to the aftermarket car repair shops, with their need for replacement parts. In the Forties, Chrysler gave up much of its parts manufacturing to “wholesalers.” In the early ‘60s, a new distribution system allowed Chrysler to have a competitive edge, and it began selling its own line of replacement parts though its own Depot system. Within a few years, this was a big success and a newer “Omega M” Mopar logo was created and is still in use today. MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
With Chrysler’s renaissance in the ‘80s, the Mopar logo and “Chrysler Corporation Genuine Parts” were used to sponsor suitable vehicles in various forms of racing...especially drag racing. Starting with cans of antifreeze, how did Mopar become synonymous with high-performance Chrysler products? The cars that Chrysler Corporation designed were all built with the competing products of the other manufacturers of the “Big Three” in mind. Always trying to undercut the competition in price while upping the performance allowed, Chrysler produced some pretty great cars over the years. In the ‘50s, Chrysler built some fast cars with Hemi engines, even providing dual four-barrel carburetors from the factory. These engines made their way into many race cars. Introduced in 1951, the “FirePower” V8 with Hemi heads was used in the Chrysler and Imperial lines. A smaller Hemi engine was built for Dodge and DeSoto in 1952 dubbed “FireDome” and “Red Ram.” The Hemi engine uses a dome combustion chamber that allows more flow of intake and exhaust gases. All together, these are referred to as “1G” or first generation Hemis and have rear-mounted distributors. A cheaper-to-build, Polyspheric-design head engine was introduced in 1955 based on the Fire Power engine, and was used in the Plymouths. Also known as “Poly” engines, they used the same block and

crank but the heads used two concave domes, one each for intake and exhaust valves. This design only needed one rocker shaft as opposed to two rocker shafts on the Hemi motors of the time. It was the reintroduction of the “Race Hemi” in 1964, though, that did more to kick the Mopar name into the forefront of every young Hot Rodder in North America. Coming in just one size to fit all, the 426 cu. in. V8 started with a conventional “Wedge” combustion chamber, but the “Hemi” combustion chamber produced the legendary power needed to be a contender. The 426 Hemi mill may overshadow the other capable engines produced by Chrysler. From the small blocks to the big blocks, it is interesting to note many of the current engines derived in some way from engines that were designed in the 1950’s with slide rules and notepads. Chrysler had produced many engines before the small-block V8 “A series” engine was introduced in 1955 and eventually came in many sizes - 277, 301, 303, 318, 326 cu. in. - and really captured the youth market and hot rodders. In 1964, the “A series” engine got its first major revision and dropped 50 lbs., and was dubbed the “LA” or “Light A.” They were available in sizes 273, 318, 340, and 360 cu. in, depending on models and years. Then, 1992-2003 saw the Magnum small-block based on the “LA” engine, but the 318 (5.2L) and the 360 (5.9L) of 1993 only retained the crankshaft and connecting rods of the original “LA” engines. Curiously, the Viper’s V10 built until 2017 uses this small block engine design with two extra cylinders added. Regarding big-block engines, the Chrysler “B” engine was built from 1958 to 1978 as 350, 361, 383 and 400 cu in. The “RB” versions were built from 1959 to 1979 and are taller than the “B” blocks, hence the “RB” for raised blocks. This series came as 383, 413, 426 Wedge and the 440, and all are over-square, or have a larger cylinder bore than stroke length.

The engines are nothing without cars to stuff them into, and Chrysler did a good job taking two-door versions of its family cars and adding the needed parts to make these muscle cars go fast, as in the GTX, Road Runner, SuperBee and Chargers. Chrysler, along with GM, sort of came late to the Pony car craze and rested on its laurels using a Valiant-derived Barracuda and an only slightly better-looking 1968 and 1969 version. All was forgiven with the introduction of the 1970 Plymouth Cuda’ and the new Dodge Challenger. The other pony car contenders were kicked to the curb with the introduction of a very capable road racing small-block version of the AAR Cuda/Challenger T/A, and fire-breathing 426 Hemis producing well over the claimed 425 horsepower in a relatively small, nimble car. Although better late than never, these monster pony cars were thrown a curve ball of a hostile market place with skyrocketing insurance costs and soon-to-be skyrocketing gas prices. Not only did Chrysler drop the big engines from the smaller cars, they gave the bigger Charger and its corresponding Plymouth versions a Frankenstein-like facelift. The ‘70s were cruel to Carnuts, and Chrysler abandoned performance in favour of the Personal Luxury market of Cordobas and some other cars best not spoken of in polite company. With Lee Iacocca joining Chrysler, he parlayed all his vast knowledge of pony cars and gave us the K-Car....a front-wheel-drive car that spawned the whole Minivan craze. Chrysler was in bed with Mitsubishi at this time, and imported many smaller cars and pickups and rebadged them as Dodge or Plymouth. The two bright spots were the turbocharged Omni GLH and the Dodge Stealth based on the Mitsubishi 3000GT. Although not a big seller, it showed Chrysler still had Carnuts in mind. Then the unthinkable happened. The Dodge Viper stormed onto the scene in 1997 and then was followed by the Plymouth Prowler in 12 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
young alike. The then-whopping 340 horsepower, from a newlyminted 5.7L Hemi engine. was like breathing fresh air into a dying man’s lungs, and this car was as breathtaking as the 2006 (four-door only) Charger was ho hum. Then the craze of taking an old design, dusting it off and re-branding it as a new allowed the Mustang GT to score a huge success based off its first versions, so Chrysler took a stab at reintroducing the “new” Challenger. Carnuts the world over rejoiced, as the new design mimicked one of the most beautiful designs in the world, and the awesome power of the new Hemi engines caused instant memory loss of the Aspens, Volares and Horizons of the 1970s. The 2008 “New” Dodge Challenger had all the great looks of the 1970 version and even an SRT8 version with a 6.1L Hemi V8 pumping out 425 horses and 420 lb-ft of torque.
2001. Both were large investments for Chrysler, but did not pay off the way they would have liked. But they still had the SUV Cherokees To wrap up this Mopar “Love Fest,” Mopar did not rest on its laurels, to keep the company afloat. building the new Challenger and Charger Hellcat versions that pump out 700 horsepower for the street, and also the Challenger Drag Pak The introduction of the 10th-generation Chrysler 300, looking more suitable for the strip. One can only imagine what the future definitely more gangster than the previous model and based on a holds...but Chrysler, please learn from the past and don’t try to sell Mercedes platform, came with the right looks to appeal to old and us the “New Cordoba”....Corinthian leather or not!

• All helical-geared transmission (1933) — replacing “spur gears.”
• Replaceable-element oil filter. In 1961, oil filters were still an option on some Chevrolets; they became standard on Chryslers in the 1930s. • Overdrive. The “fourth gear” using the Keller clutch was invented at Chrysler, but to avoid tooling costs, Walter P. Mopar or NO Car
Aftermarket Industry Professionals Reminisce on 80 Years of Full-Throttle Performance Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko
T
his year, we salute Mopar for eight decades in business, a monumental accomplishment when one considers the scope of global evolution during the past 80 years. Today, “ Mopar services more than 150 markets around the world with a portfolio that tops 500,000 products,” said the company. “And we’re just getting started.” What began as a line of antifreeze products on August 1, 1937 expanded to parts, weapons, and vehicle production throughout the 1940s for WWII. Brand development captured the attention of impressionable bystanders in the ‘50s and with it, a heartbeat for highperformance came alive during the classic muscle car era of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Eventually, Mopar became the first to offer a parts delivery system, which set a new standard for dealer support. Now it’s a total service, parts, and customer care provider for FCA vehicle owners worldwide. Undeniably, the very core of its success is, in fact, the unwavering support of its fiercely loyal customer base. As Mopar says, everything it does is “all in service of the people who drive us.”
boosted the Hemi to legendary status. “Mopar’s intention was racing car first, passenger car second,” said August Cederstrand, a Regional Account Manager at Edelbrock who cut his teeth on British sports cars like the Mini Cooper. Even Cederstrand was immediately enamoured with the rise of muscle, crediting Chrysler with an aggressive advertising campaign that appealed to the testosterone in buyers. Since the age of 17, he’s been a devout disciple of the Mopar brand. The man has been faithfully married to his ’69 Plymouth Road Runner longer than his wife. A sentimental bond that’s spanned 30 years, “it’s been a street racer, dragster, and reliable daily driver, all in one,” added Cederstrand. And that’s only one example of countless. Mopar’s fingerprints are all over the brute marvels of the golden age, muscle cars that produced unprecedented, heart-thumping power and a sense of raw exhilaration behind the wheel. The aftermarket demanded even more of an alreadyimpressive platform whose only true requirements were to be driven hard and fast. “As a person who grew up in the automotive aftermarket, I can tell you that no brand represents the spirit of car personalization more than Mopar. There’s a rich history of radical transformations when it comes to Mopar: the big motors busting out of the hood, the huge wings, the non-traditional colours, and so much more,” said David Borla, VP Sales & Marketing at Borla Exhaust. Equally-historic brands like SSBC, Edelbrock, and Hedman Headers not only crafted parts that revved performance to the next level both on the street and at the track, some even teamed up for specialty programs.
“Edelbrock’s involvement with Chrysler/Mopar parts is decades long, since the golden age of classic muscle performance, and includes private label parts like our manifold for the 440-6 pack and their racing program. Even today, Edelbrock makes Mopar’s aluminum 426 Hemi head; we cast and machine that for them along with a wedge head and intake manifolds, among others,” said Cederstrand, who passionately explained they not only know the Mopar brand intimately, but also honour the proud partnership and heritage of such a household name. And really, it speaks volumes about Edelbrock’s own brand. “What’s that spell for the Mopar community? We’re not just another manifold company; we’re trusted and are involved directly with the factories in making parts, When other automakers were playing it safe with production plans that specifically aftermarket performance, to deliver top performance when appealed to the masses, Mopar tapped into every boy’s inner rebel and it counts,” he continued. 16 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
Hellcat, Mopar keeps making news in today’s classic to late-model communities that all want more horsepower. Our K&N Cold Air Intake Systems have been helping those Mopar motors, especially the Hemi, to create more power.” – Ross Berlanga, Brand Manager for K&N Automotive/Powersports and AEM Inductions. “MagnaFlow is excited to help celebrate the 80th year of Mopar. In the past few years, we have seen the Charger and Challenger become staples in our catback and axle-back exhaust offerings for the muscle car market. We are inspired by Mopar’s ability to engineer and create new performance models like the Hellcat and Demon that give our mutual consumer the desire and the ability to customize their vehicle to meet their demands. As enthusiasts, we all want to make our vehicles rumble and what better way to do that than with a Mopar?” – Kathryn Reinhardt, Marketing Manager at Magnaflow. “It’s hard to believe Mopar is celebrating 80 years of world-changing performance! From the brute force of the early Hemi to the super sophisticated and high-tech, modern day muscle cars, Mopar has never been afraid to blaze its own trail. For 34 years, Flowmaster exhaust has been proud to provide Mopar lovers with trusted aftermarket parts that help their neighbours know, “I drive a muscle car.’” - Jeremy Hart, Northeast/Midwest Regional Sales Manager at Flowmaster.
What’s undeniable is that Mopar indeed is just getting started. “That spirit continues today and when I think of Mopar, I think of platforms that are ripe for customization backed by a large group of enthusiasts who appreciate that a whole lot. In fact, I’m one of ‘em!” added Borla. The modern muscle category has allowed brands like Magnaflow, K&N, Flowmaster, and MBRP to share in the contagious enthusiasm of such an influential “I learned to drive on a 1970 Barracuda convertible with a 383 2 barrel consumer group. But don’t take our word for it—take theirs. carb. This car was equipped with 4 wheel drum. You never knew which “Mopar is one of the most iconic performance OE brands within the way it was going to stop. Mopar was less concerned with the braking and automotive aftermarket that has moved into mainstream Americana more concerned with going fast! (Needless to say, it was fun to drive), Culture. When Daimler-Chrysler brought back the Hemi platform in the “said Mike Jonas, President of SSBC. “SSBC has been making new Dart Dodge Magnum years ago, followed by the 300C, the most customizable GT calipers since 1987, which solve all the issues with corrosion-frozen car of the year award at the 2006 SEMA Show, the urban underground pistons. Classic Ride Roger Hawthorne’s 1973 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible
M
ost regard the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as America’s sports car, and for good reason, as the V8-powered fibreglass coupes and convertibles have been in regular production for over six decades. The third-generation cars, often referred to as the C3 series, were produced for a period of 15 years in St. Louis from 1968 to 1982 - a period that represents the longest span of time between significant model revisions. What makes the 1973 Corvette Stingray unusual among Corvettes is a unique bumper design that came about due to changes in government crash safety regulations. Previous C3s featured chrome bumpers front and rear, but the front bumper on the 1973 model was changed to an 8-kilometre-per-hour unit fitted with a molded urethane bumper cover, while the rear remained a two-piece split design which would also be replaced with a polyurethane unit the following year. This unique styling element adds to the collectibility of the 1973 Corvette, but it also resulted in the addition of a little weight to the car in comparison to earlier models. The engineering team also added heavy-duty structural guard beams to the doors that year to increase the car’s crash worthiness, a factor that also contributed to the car’s extra poundage.

With more sports-minded competition flooding to North America from Europe, the product planners at General Motors sought to give the Corvette a new level of refinement for model year 1973 to help broaden its appeal. As a result, a healthy dose of insulation was added throughout the car’s cabin to reduce the intrusion of noise from mechanical rattles, body squeaks and travelling over rough road surfaces. Okanagan Falls, B.C. resident Roger Hawthorne, the owner of this bright yellow example, had just sold his Porsche 930 Turbo and realized that he had a place in his garage for another sporty car. This time, however, the avid car collector was looking for a convertible so that he could enjoy the pleasant Okanagan weather. At around the same time, a friend of his had acquired a 1973 Corvette coupe. After Roger had the opportunity to drive that car a few times, he realized that he liked the body style and how the car performed. “I have had the 1973 Corvette Stingray for about a decade now,” said Hawthorne as he sat behind the wheel enjoying the warmth of the morning sun as it washed over his face. “I located it in White Rock, B.C. The car’s owner had had it restored in Michigan, and after seeing what a wonderful example this car was, I knew I had found my new car.”

of our journey than Ernie’s 4-speed manual equipped coupe! That is pretty impressive, especially when you factor in that we did a lot of misbehaving on the trip back.” Hawthorne’s stunning example is stock, and all the trim tags reveal that it was restored to its original specification. This is a key to any purchase decision he makes when it comes to collecting automobiles. “Cars like these are a lot of fun, and I will never lose any money on cars like this.” The self-professed car addict admits to having owned well over 100 cars in his lifetime and says that when he was 16 years old, he was already trading cars at the remarkable rate of completing a transaction every two Hawthorne’s good friend and fellow car nut Ernie Blumke had driven weeks! “I would buy a car, fix it up a little and sell it for a little bit of Roger to White Rock in his own 1973 Corvette to complete the pur- profit before moving on to the next one.” chase. Once the enthusiastic pair got the slinky convertible insured, A road test lakeside with the wind tousling my hair and the growl of they convoyed the two fibreglass rockets back to the Okanagan. “We filled up with gas in Abbotsford, and again upon arrival back the 350-cubic inch engine tickling my ears revealed that Hawthorne’s home in Okanagan Falls,” recalled the retired civil engineer. “The Corvette is a real gem. Despite having over 100,000 miles on the interesting thing we learned on that trip was that this car, with the clock, this C3 delivered a commanding driving experience and it is automatic transmission, used one less litre of fuel over the course obvious that the car is being maintained to a very high standard.

I had the opportunity to navigate some very twisty roads complete with significant changes in elevation and a series of straight sections long enough to allow me to stretch the car’s legs a little. Steering became much lighter at speed, but the warm day and sticky tires helped keep the car tracking straight and true. I noticed just a hint of understeer when I pushed the curvaceous convertible hard into corners, but the amount of body sway and roll was minimal. As my foot pressed down on the gas pedal, the car would sit back gracefully on its haunches allowing the nose to lift and act as a pointer to remind me to watch the road ahead. Acceleration was strong, although traffic and the fact that I was operating the car on public roads prevented me from doing any real data acquisition for raw numbers. Life has been pretty good to Hawthorne, whose strong drive and unmatched work ethic allowed him to retire at the young age of 50. Roger is approaching 70-years old, but admits that his enthusiasm for life and his interest in all things relating to design and automobiles is helping to keep him young. “Do you ever look at your investment portfolio and say wow, does that ever look pretty! I suspect that you don’t. At this stage of my life I prefer to invest in automobiles, as you can’t take your stock portfolio for a drive!” AUG/SEPT 2017 MUSCLE CAR Plus MAGAZINE 25
The Atlantic Nationals
And so it begins… Story and photos by Paul Kennedy
O
ur trip to the 17th annual Atlantic Nationals in Moncton, NB, was easier than expected, because we had the opportunity to use the new A-30 toll highway that bypasses the nightmare known as Montreal traffic. It is easily worth the $2.80 charge to retain your sanity. We stayed overnight in Edmunston, NB, then drove to Moncton the next day, arriving for registration at the Wesleyan Church around 2:00 p.m. When we returned to the car, I noticed a small washer and a cotter pin sitting on the floor mat on the driver’s side. This was not good. I found a lady with the flashlight app on her phone, which she lent to me. I looked up under the dash, and there was the clutch rod, attached to the clutch pedal, but without its cotter pin. Yikes! Fortunately I had brought a small assortment of tools, and the long needle nose pliers were just the ticket. So I reinstalled it, and contemplated how good our luck was that after 1400 km, the cotter pin had fallen out while we were parked in a parking lot. Even though our car show didn’t start until Friday, the show actually started Wednesday with a cruise in from 1- 4 p.m. at Auto Crew’s new store, followed by a cruise at 6:15 p.m. to Action Car and Truck accessories, both sponsored by the Moncton Cruisers Car Club. On Thursday, the day started at 8:00 a.m. with a participant’s breakfast served by the Mayor and Council members at the Riverview Lions Club. At 9:30, Gary Steeves Insurance sponsored a “Mystery Tour” cruise until 1:00 p.m., followed by a BBQ at the Steeves Garage, served by members of the Hillsborough Kiwanis Club. That night, there was a Meet and Greet, Drive-In movie, and a registered participant supper at the Moncton Coliseum. We were the 79th registrant out of 1911 cars, good number for a 1979 Malibu. They have had over 2000 cars registered at previous shows, but the gloomy weather forecast kept some away this 26 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
included jacking up the front end to check the ball joints - talk about thorough. Having our car checked, and receiving the Safety sticker, made us feel much more secure about the drive home. They also perform Drive Through judging for the Top 10 pre and post 1948 cars. The drive to our parking spot was slow, as many of the people walking on the road seemed shocked to see a car idling behind them. We were parked on a steep hill, ahead of cars which then couldn’t get out. When I asked a volunteer if I could go back up the steep hill to a parking lot I had seen closer to the entrance, he informed me that I had to go across the one lane wooden pedestrian bridge to get out. I did so immediately, and was very relieved I had done so when it was time for all of us to leave, as my new parking field was only 60
year. (It only rained late at night). Friday, the downtown was closed to traffic and cars from the car show parked on a 5 block length of Main Street. There was even a live band at the top end, all part of the Mother’s sponsored Cruise-In and Rock and Roll Street Party. There were well over a hundred cars parked on both sides, down side streets - virtually everywhere. The show went until midnight, and the cars could be heard leaving enthusiastically until at least one a.m. Saturday, the show started at 10:00 am in the 230 acre Centennial feet from the entrance. When cars first entered, they could line up for a safety check and Barber Dave were among the special guests, and spent most performed by NSRA and Atlantic Nationals volunteers which even of Saturday and Sunday signing autographs. Saturday night also featured the Gene Winfield Birthday Bash at the Moncton Coliseum from 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. I am ashamed to report that two days of steady driving caused me to miss the party. I know, lame. Sunday, the car show again opened at 10 a.m., and awards were to start at 3:00 p.m. I only stayed until noon, since we had to check out of the hotel and head to Halifax for visits with our cousins. The Atlantic Nationals was a great excuse to visit our down east cousins, but it’s safe to say I would attend them again even without the visits. Great venue, excellent mix of cars and places of origin, lots to do after each show day. The people in Moncton were most welcoming, and a huge number of spectators attended just to look at the cars on display. Well done guys!

HISTORY: JOHN Z. DELOREAN
Rebel with a Cause
DeLorean dreamed of a true two-seat Pontiac sports car. He never accomplished that, but he launched the four-place Firebird in 1967 and it was a success. (GM Media Archives) Story by John Gunnell Zachary DeLorean (JZD) was legendary in Detroit and John Hollywood and generated lots of media coverage. Some say a character in Arthur Haley’s Wheels
was based on the rule-bending “Young Turk.” JZD’s own 1979 book On a Clear Day, You Can See General Motors exposed the inner workings of GM. JZD established the DeLorean Motor Co. (DMC) to build the ill-fated DMC12 gull-wing. But, his biggest headlines came in 1982 when he was accused of trafficking in drugs to try to keep DMC out bankruptcy.
JZD was a creative genius and nonIn 1968, Pontiac produced its 12 millionth vehiconformist of the highest rank. In Glory cle and DeLorean posed with the LeMans coupe as it came off the line. (GM Media Archives) (GM Media Archives Days, Jim Wangers stated, “DeLorean had an innate passion for Pontiac and and Tim Dye) that enthusiasm, combined with his engineering capability, was one of the There, he showed great talents in music and industrial engineerreasons Pete Estes chose him to become chief engineer when he ing. moved to GM.” John got drafted in 1943 and spent three years in the army. He worked part-time for Chrysler and at a body shop. After a Zachary DeLorean, a Romanian immigrant, Ford worker and carpen- short stint as a life insurance salesman, JZD attended the Chrysler ter. He became head of 34 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

exhaust header fabricators in Detroit. George raced Pontiacs and had a ’63 “Swiss Cheese” Catalina that clocked a 12:33-sec. run at 119 mph at Detroit Dragway. Wynn became Leader Automotive. In 1969, Leader bought the Royal Pontiac Racing Team. According to Milt Schornack, JZD would hold impromptu brainstorming sessions with his engineers on Saturday mornings. At one session, engineer Bill Collins was looking at a ’64 Tempest pilot-line car. He told JZD and powertrain engineer Russ Gee how cool it would be to bolt a 389-cid V8 into the identical 326-cid motor mounts. Within a week, JZD had the prototype GTO built.
The Performance Years JZD used his skills in engineering and corporate politics to build the GTO and push it into the market against a company policy limiting mid-sized cars to 300-cid. He talked general manager Pete Estes into selling the package as an option and Estes put his job on Research & Development. After Packard merged with Studebaker, the line giving it the green light. As noted earlier, Frank Bridge was GM’s vice president of engineering, Oliver Kelly, offered JZD a choice against it. Bridge finally agreed to go along with building 5,000 cars, of jobs at GM. He joined Pontiac to work with Bunkie Knudsen and but as it turned out over 32,000 were sold and the GTO became tap into the youth-oriented high-performance car market. a winner. Early Career at Pontiac “Knudsen surrounded himself with young talent,” Keith J. MacDonald and Milt Schornack say in Milt Schornack and the Royal Bobcat GTOs. He acquired Estes from Olds and beat out four competing divisions for DeLorean. JZD joined Pontiac in 1956, making $16,000. He created Pontiac’s “Wide-Track” stance (which sold lots of cars)
The innovative Gen 1 Pontiac Tempest attracted lots of attention at auto shows of the day. It was another DeLorean concept.
After the GTO, JZD was “gold” at PMD. He was promoted to General Manager in 1965 (at 40) — the youngest divisional head in GM history. But, the executive role was hard for him and he crossed swords with many other execs. Wangers’ book documents JZD’s four-letter-word battles with chief engineer Steve Malone for giving out press cars. JZD had two big run-ins with GM chairman James Rouche—one in 1966 when JZD exhibited the XP-798 Scorpian/Banshee Firebird prototype at the New York Auto Show. Rouche felt it didn’t fit GM’s safety image and ordered it removed. JZD ordered the car put back. The next day Rouche attended the show, saw the car and flipped. He banished it to a warehouse in New Jersey. In 1967, Pontiac got caught cheating to win the Union Pure Oil Trials. Later, a Union Oil executive mentioned this to Rouche at a dinner. Rouche pinned the blame on JZD and cancelled his bonus. After inventing the muscle car, creating the successful Firebird, siring the GTO Judge, developing the long-nosed ’69 Grand Prix and basically keeping Pontiac number 3 for a decade, JZD was shunted to Chevrolet. Perhaps GM brass thought the new Vega would keep him out of trouble. He did manage to re-organize Chevy and pull it out of a slump, for which he was named GM vice president of car and truck production, a rung on the ladder to the top. The Tempest Monte Carlo was in a museum in Texas for years, but recently showed up for sale.
and such things as the torque-box perimeter frame, recessed and articulated windshield wipers, lane-change turn signals, the overhead-cam six and Endura rubber bumpers. But it was his marketing skill that earned him most fame. Jim Wangers—an acclaimed marketing professional—notes that JZD was “quick to understand advertising and marketing.” The sales success of Wide-Track Drive combined with JZD’s amazing marketing of the rope-drive ’61 Tempest put Pontiac into third place on industry charts. That made him Pontiac’s “boy wonder.” As Wangers learned after seeing JDZ and sales manger Frank Bridge battle over the GTO, he was “pretty good at corporate politics, too.” JZD understood that racing and performance counted. His younger brother George owned Wynn Engineering and was one of the best AUG/SEPT 2017 MUSCLE CAR Plus MAGAZINE 35

became best known as the “Back to the Future” car in a 1985 film. Before the company was shuttered, Jim Hoffman, a drug dealer and FBI informant, contacted JZD. Over a period of time, the two set up a plan for JZD to back a smuggling operation to make money to bailout DMC. On Oct. 19, 1982, the FBI arrested JZD for trafficking in cocaine. Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt came to his rescue with a videotape of the sting that put government agents in a bad light. JZD insisted police had asked him to supply the money to buy the cocaine. In August 1984, he was found not guilty due to entrapment. In later life, JDZ’s image changed from that of trend-setting winner to failure. He and Ferrare became born-again Christians, then divorced in 1985. He later married Sally Baldwin, who he lived with in Bedminster, N.J. In 1999, lawsuits stemming from DMC forced JZD to file for personal bankruptcy protection. On March 19, 2005, he had a stroke and died. He was 80 years old. In October 2009, Jim Espey, president of a reorganized DeLorean Motor Co., announced his firm might continue building the Pontiac Solstice after GM completed the phase out of the brand.
By 1970, JZD was earning $200,000 and bonuses up to $400,000. He invested in the San Diego Chargers and New York Yankees and jet-setted to hang with people like financier Kirk Kerkorian and entertainers Johnny Carson and Sammy Davis, Jr. JZD’s rebel image, flamboyant lifestyle, ego and self-promotion didn’t thrill GM bigwigs. He could have settled down and almost certainly would have become president, but he wasn’t happy buckling into the stifling corporate environment. In 1973, he resigned to accept the presidency of the National Alliance of Businessmen, a federal government/auto industry trade group. In 1974, JZD married Christina Ferrare, his third wife and 25 years his junior. Ferrare played a nude, bisexual vampire in the B-horror flick Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary. JZD wanted to build a rust-free stainless steel gull-wing sports car. The British government loaned him nearly 100 million pounds for a factory in Northern Ireland. The DMC-12 lacked real performance and its unpainted appearance was unpopular. Production began in 1981, but DMC fell into receivership in February 1982. It built about 9,000 cars before the Brits closed it in November 1982. The DMC-12

New 52mm Blow-Off Valve for All Single and Twin TorqStorm Supercharger Kits TorqStorm Superchargers has recently increased the size of its compressor blow-off valve from 38mm to 52mm and to accommodate this, it is now offering a new 52mm blow-off valve for all single and twin supercharger kits. The new device is made to ease the work load on the supercharger’s compressor wheel as the new 52mm successor offers better control of air. The new valve is connected to the 3-in. intake tract and features a springloaded piston inside the valve’s aluminum housing and a ¼-in. nipple on its cap that delivers a source of vacuum. The effect of the vacuum compresses the spring allowing the piston to draw away from its seat thus releasing unwanted boost pressure. For more information please go to www.torqstorm.com

READERS RIDES 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible
Gary Cassulis bought his 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible from a gentleman in Washington State about 3 years ago, and luckily for Gary, the guy was something of a perfectionist. He did most of the repairs/upkeep on his own and even had all of the original paperwork. After searching and searching for a Corvair, Gary knew he had to have this one upon first sight. The stunning red-painted car features a rear, 6-cylinder engine that pushes out 150 horsepower and only has about 57,000 original miles.
1954 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60 Special Sedan
When Lyndon Throness originally found his 1954 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60 Special Sedan in Gibsons, B.C. through a friend, he found it in not great running condition but was determined to make it to his home in Surrey and did just that. The 230-horsepower 331 CID V8 engine was in need of a serious rebuild and as soon as that was done, it ran as smooth as glass. The car features a light blue broadcloth interior and boasts the rare $600+ air conditioning option right from the factory.
