hevrolet has officially introduced the 2019 Corvette ZR1 which will boast the highest power, greatest track performance and most advanced technology in its entire production history. The Corvette ZR1 will feature the exclusive LT5 supercharged engine which pushes out a very impressive 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the huge power numbers, the ZR1 offers two wind tunnel-honed aerodynamics packages including an available High Wing that provides an estimated 950 pounds of downforce. The new LT5 delivers the highest output ever for a Chevrolet production vehicle thanks in part to a new intercooled supercharger system that offers 52-percent more displacement than the Z06’s LT4 supercharger. In addition, GM’s first dualfuel-injection system employs primary direct injection and supplemental port injection helps the engine achieve record output. Two transmissions will be offered for the ZR1; a seven-speed manual transmission and for the first time ever in a ZR1 a 8-speed paddle-shift automatic. In addition to the power upgrades, the ZR1’s aggressive appearance features a new front fascia that is designed to channel air for propulsion-system and drivetrain cooling with four new radiators bringing the heatexchanger total to 13. A carbon-fibre halo hood is open in the middle, while additional MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017
features such as stanchion mounted wings help push the ZR1 harder onto the track. Inside of the new ZR1 features a driver-focused cockpit that features leather-trimmed seats with sueded inserts, a carbon fiber-rimmed steering wheel, competition sport seats, a Performance Data Recorder and a Bose premium audio system. It is set to go on sale in the Spring of 2018.

Classic Chrysler Swap George Kanavaros obtained his 1970 Plymouth Cuda by trading his 1969 Charger
Story and photos by Cam Hutchins
L
ike a scene out of a “B” movie where prisoners are exchanged at Checkpoint Charlie in East Berlin with machine gun-toting border guards looking on, George Kanavaros snatched his 1970 Plymouth Cuda in a “prisoner swap” for his 1969 Charger. It was just after midnight on February 21, with temperatures hovering around 42 below zero, and the cars had to be pushed across the border since neither one wanted to fire up. The
spot, south of Regina at the North Dakota border, was picked, since it was halfway between Richmond B.C. and Detroit. Once the paperwork was done at the “Guard Shacks,” each new owner drove off with their treasures strapped to trailers. The 1969 Charger was bought new at Keith Beedle Motors in Langley, B.C., and George restored it and ran it for 14 years before getting itchy and finding a street brawling Cuda from Detroit for sale online. The Internet was new to George back then, and maybe he regrets trading straight across for his prized Charger, but a 26,000-mile Cuda with racing heritage was hard to pass up. Here is what he traded away - a fullyrestored 1969 Charger RT 440 6-pack, bronze with black stripe and tan interior with power windows, AM 8-track Radio. The Charger had appeared in a few movies and commercials, and consistently ran mid-12s at Mission Raceway Park. It seemed crazy to his wife when he unloaded the Cuda at home and it came out of the trailer missing headlights and with a totally bruised look. Kanavaros assured her this was a diamond in the rough and went about getting it running so he could do the dance of inspection and registration to get insurance and BC registration for his prize. His prize was backed up with proper paperwork and a VIN number and date codes that shows just

what a treasure Kanavaros had got! This car was ordered to race but came with some pretty cool options not often found on even the most creampuff of Cudas. It started life as an FC7 “In Violet” (Metallic) Purple 1970 Cuda, 440 6-pack 4-speed car with Trac Pac Dana rearend, Black interior and black vinyl roof. Pretty standard for a race car back in the day. Not so common was the tinted glass, Rallye Dash, S-83 Rim-Blow steering wheel option, AM/FM five-speaker Multi Plex stereo, or the special lighting group including map reading light, glove box light and trunk light. Group the A21 rubber bumper, painted body colour and set flush into the valance and fenders, along with body colour mirrors and special placement for the turn signals. Only nine cars came in this combo. This 440 car also has the “Hemi” fenders that have the edge rolled flat to allow for the larger tires. The fattest thing available back in the day were F60 15x7 Goodyear Polyglass GTs. That is the way the car was delivered to the first owner in Detroit, Michigan, but nowhere near how Kanavaros got the car at “Checkpoint Charlie.” After racing in Super Stock, the first owner switched up to the 426 Hemi engine and raced Super Stock D with a spray of Hemi Orange paint, and then stuffed in the automatic and raced Super Stock D Auto. The car was raced for a while in Ohio and then retired and came back to Detroit. It was put back on the street with its original 440 6-pack and it was just a big bad brawling street fighter. The vinyl roof was gone along with the fancy bumpers and mirrors. The

side turn signal lights were removed and all holes brazed up. All the parts were stuffed in boxes that luckily got saved and came with the car. It languished in a barn on a rancher’s property in Detroit for 19 years until Kanavaros traded for it. It had 26,000 miles and was sort of a mess. It was still running an auto with reverse manual valve body and the Dana rearend had 4:10 gears. Kanavaros got it through the city test and certified by a mechanic. He then put the 4-speed back in behind the 440 and when he went to get emissions testing at a B.C. Aircare centre, the tester could not drive a manual tranny, so Kanavaros had to run it up onto the rollers and go through the testing himself. A four-barrel was put on for the test at the time, and then the 6-pack was put on for George to play.

is a Caltrac split mono-leaf suspension with Caltrac fully adjustable shocks in rear and adjustable front competition shocks. This setup allows Kanavaros to fully tune the chassis to help at the track. As for the bodywork, the car was all original sheet metal without any rust. It was a mixed bag of new pieces stripped off the car when new and stuffed in boxes, or kind of worn pieces still on the car, like the sun-faded carpet and front seat belts, but no rear belts. The ultrarare stereo and the not-sorare visors were missing. A friend sourced the correct stereo on eBay and Kanavaros paid crazy money for a NOS (New Old Stock) unit. It had to have the two 6x9 The Cuda was driven for 4.5 years as a rough street fighter. Over speakers in back, a centre 4x10 up front, and a 4x4 in each that time, it got new brakes and a better tranny and clutch, and corner of the dash. It even has the stereo splitter switch under more street bruiser attitude with a big cam. Then the decision the dash by the glovebox. was made to restore it and finally three years ago, he finished it, with much thanks to Glen May who allowed him to do all the The seats are original and the dash, door panels and glass all are date-coded with the correct Chryco numbers. The dash has two small holes for a mechanical Smith dual-point ignition, and it was completely stock from carbs to tach. Kanavaros is pretty handy and also did the body work oil pan, but the motor looked so good, he left the 440 6-pack and paint, but left the vinyl roof and front and rear glass to the on the engine stand and stuffed a beefy Hemi into the engine experts. He also left the rim blow steering wheel to the experts in North Carolina that specialize in that sort of thing. bay for fun. The 4-speed manual tranny is a date code-matched unit and complete with the Hemi 18-spline shaft. The Dana 60 still has the 4:10 gears for motivation. To help put the power to the ground, Kanavaros runs L60/15 GT Tires that are a little taller and wider than original. Also helping to control the beefy Hemi’s power
Finishing the car in 2014, Kanavaros has been driving it and his wife likes to go along for the ride, but prefers to drive it. They have been to a few places like Whistler and Sechelt for the Sleepy Hollow event, but maybe one day we will get to see Mrs Kanavaros race it on the track!
COLOUR CODES The High Impact colours were an extra cost (around $15 in 1970 bills) optional array of colours that were given names by the Chrysler team in what one may wonder was a move to endear them to the swinging drug crazed crowd. Almost like poking fun at the establishment, Chrysler one-upped the ante in my mind by offering exactly the same colours but by different names on this 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Most of these colours were found on muscle cars. Even the paint code names were the same across brands.

Heartland Customs Built 1972 “Menace Corvette Debuted at Covercraft Booth The Covercraft booth housed one of the most impressive unveilings at the show, with a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette, nicknamed Menace. The car was built by Heartland Customs out of Purcell, Oklahoma, who gave the C3 Corvette an obviously custom look but without going over the top. The design of the car brings a modern look to a timeless classic with even some European styling influence. Under the hood of the car is a supercharged LS7 that pushes out 860 horsepower and is paired to a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission. The car sits on a set of 20-in. HRE wheels with 345 Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires and features a modern chassis that was created from scratch by Jeff Page of Heartland Customs and the Roadster Shop. The inside of the car is definitely special and was created by Sculpt Garage out of Texas and features a modernized look that will stand the test of time.

Ringbrothers Debut 1969 Dodge Charger Called “Defector” at BASF Booth World-renowned custom car builder Ringbrothers were at it once again during the show, this time unveiling a spectacular 1969 Dodge Charger nicknamed “Defector” at the BASF Booth. The muscle car was introduced personally by Ringbrothers founders Jim and Mike Ring. The car retains the factory body lines of one of the most popular Mopars ever built, as the builders combined the original styling cues with modifications to uphold the factory-like appearance. More than 4,700 hours were put into this build with the biggest difference from the original Charger being the body work performed towards the rear. The brothers started with a stock Charger body and shortened the car by 2-in. through the trunk area and extended the wheel base by 3-in. Additionally, the side rockers were made longer and the quarter panels were both lowered and extended. A Detroit Speed Hydroformed Subframe sits below the body with rack and pinion steering, front sway bars and four-link suspension. To highlight the car, a rich custom BASF Glasurit colour named “Greener on the Other Side” was used.

The engine features an upgraded Whipple Supercharger which pushes power output to an astonishing 1,030 horsepower, which gets put to the rear wheels through a Bowler automatic transmission. A custom front subframe which was originally designed for a Camaro is used and holds modernized steering, sway bars and RideTech Suspension components. The rear of the car features a Chevrolet 12-bolt rear end which is mounted on a four-link suspension system designed by Ringbrothers. Also featured are six-piston Baer brakes and large 20-in. HRE wheels. Hellcat-Powered 1972 AMC Javelin AMX Unveiled at Show The Ringbrothers were part of another amazing vehicle unveiling, this time down at Prestone’s booth and the debut of the Hellcat-powered 1972 AMC Javelin AMX called Defiant! Not unlike most of Ringbrothers builds, the car has been heavily modified to fit within their vision for the car. To fit in the aforementioned Hellcat-sourced 6.2L supercharged V8 engine, the guys had to move the wheels forward about 6.5-in. which is hidden behind the flared bodywork made from car-

hen you have a big, torquey V8 engine (as you will soon find out, our ’68 Chevelle does) it is important your rear end set-up is fit to handle all of the abuse and put the power to the wheels. A GM 12-bolt differential is one of the most popular options out there when it comes to muscle cars, as it can handle tons of power and is durable, yet simple, which is a huge plus in the muscle car world.
1. Our GM 12-bolt rear end found online. bit of work. We first decided to take it down to Kool Coat in Langley, B.C. where Doug helped us out by applying a black powder coat finish to our rear end, which not only added to its durability, but also provided a sleek look that will integrate well into our car.
After that, we had a solid housing to use as a base, but now it was time to talk about the internals. For that, we went down the street to Once we decided this was the route we were going to go, we hit the The Gear Centre where they went to work on a complete overhaul inter web and found a pretty good example, albeit one that needed a using brand new parts provided by Eaton and Quality Gear. 2. Plates are first sandblasted in order to get them down to raw metal.
3.Bearings are taped so that powder coat doesn’t get inside. 4. Acetone is applied to help get remaining grease off. Powder coat is then applied through an air gun electrostatically. It is applied as a powder and becomes a liquid in the oven and bakes to the piece.

The 7-day trail were created in 1912. In 1913, an Oakland automobile blazed tour started in Hudson, Wisconsin (near Minneapolis) and headed east to Waupaca, Wis. From there, Sarna followed the original trail as closely as possible from Waupaca, through Oshkosh, Fond du Lac and Milwaukee, to its final Wisconsin destination in Kenosha. Like Michael J. As a Pontiac collector and historian, the author had always wanted to own an Oakland, the parent make of Pontiac from 1908-1931. In the fall of 2015, he was able to buy an old building that had been an Oakland dealership in 1917. The building had also been a Yellowstone Garage—a recommended stopping place for service work on cars travelling the trail. A month or so later, his son found him a 1917 Oakland Model 34 (a.k.a. “Sensible Six” touring car) for sale at a very reasonable price. He bought it with the intention of pushing it into the old Oakland showroom to use as a static display. The 2017 “Century for Sight” tour over the Wisconsin section of The Yellowstone Trail started on a high note at the arch in Hudson, Wis. 30 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2017

When he got back in July, he immediately started working on our Bonneville racing car—a big-block-Chevypowered Pontiac Trans Am. In early September, he took that car to the “World of Speed” event at Bonneville Speedway and realized his dream of going 200 mph there. He actually averaged 206 mph. While Dave was gone, a car collector friend named Tim Buttles agreed to work on the Oakland. The car has an overhead valve six with an exposed rocker arm assembly and long push rods running

Andy Wise (www.wiseandysgarage.com) specializes in restoring pre-1950 cars and also re-straps shock absorbers and relines cone clutches with Kevlar. The Oakland has a cone clutch so Andy was our only hope—or was it too late? Dave called Andy and it turned out that he was at the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Fall National Meet at Hershey, Pa., the biggest old-car show in the world. Wayne Koffel was there, too. They had a used Oakland clutch of the size we needed. We had a local friend named Bob Buchman who was also at the Hershey swap meet. We would trailer the car to Hudson—a five-hour license plate that was hanging in front of the radiator, straightened trip--on Sunday Oct. 8. The week before the trip, Dave took the pan some of the fins and changed the coolant mixture slightly. Then, we off, and checked all the rod bearings. We discovered the Oakland put the car on my trailer, strapped it down and took off for Hudson has insert bearings and that the pistons could be removed from around 4 pm. under the car. Late that afternoon, Dave took the car to a sign shop around the corner from my garage. A young lady there spent about an hour and a half attaching sponsorship decals and other graphics. When she was done, Dave got in the car to back it out of the bay. Almost immediately the 100-year-old clutch facing came flying out from under the car. It was made of leather and looked like a thick belt with offset holes. We had less than 48 hours to get the car to the starting line in Hudson and we had no clutch! A large crowd including a TV reporter met us in Eau Claire. We off loaded the Oakland for photos and then loaded it again. Rick Payton said we could keep the car indoors on the trailer at his restoration shop in Chippewa Falls. His plan was to work on the rods one by one as we moved along until we got to my Yellowstone Garage at the Waupaca stop. Bob Buchman would

knocking again. We loaded it on the trailer and proceeded to our lunch stop in Menominee, Wis. There we met a group of Lions Club members, the Mayor, a reporter from a local paper (we made the front page) and John and Alice Ridge, retired college professors who wrote the book Introducing The Yellowstone Trail: A Good Road from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. Our dinner stop was the Classic Garage in Eau Claire, Wis., an old Texaco station converted to a restaurant by Cadillac collector Rick Payton. With the car on the trailer, we arrived early and went to Eau Claire British Cars where Steve Rindt let us work near his shop. The pan came off again and it was covered with bearing material. The Number 3 rod bearing was completely gone! A few others were loose. Dave put in a call to Andy Wise and found out that new bearings were “unobtanium.” Andy did, however, have four good used bearings and he agreed to ship them to Dave’s wife Debbie by two-day mail.

The next day was fix-the-car-day. We went to Waupaca where Debbie Sarna brought the parts from Andy Wise and the “three Bobs” were standing by to help Dave finish the engine. There was also a Lions Club lunch at the shop and by coincidence a hot rod club was visiting a collection nearby and stopped at my shop, too. On top of all this, Barney Gaylord of Chicago, who calls himself the MGA Guru, showed up driving his quarter-million-mile MG. Things were really crazy for a while, but the engine got fixed. This time Dave purposely put too much oil in the sump so the rod bearings would have plenty of lubricant to splash in. The car did smoke a bit, but it is certainly old enough to smoke. After a few test laps around the block, we loaded the car on the trailer and towed it a short distance to avoid taking it on a 70-mph highway. Then we unloaded it and Dave drove it to Oshkosh, were we had some custard and got a hotel room.
stop was Abbotsford, where we stopped at a machine shop to bum some used Chevy small-block hardened nut and an auto parts store to pick up some green Plastigage. We also called car collector Guy Carpenter in Marshfield (the next day’s lunch stop) to ask if he knew of a a friend or business with a lift that we could use.
The next say we drove the Oakland to North Fond du Lac, where there is a Yellowstone Trail Park and another Yellowstone Garage that Northern Battery Company uses as a warehouse. We picked up a new 6-volt battery and continued out of Fond du Lac, using backroads to drive to Hartford, where our Lions Club dinner stop was at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum. We overnighted in Hartford, then continued the next day through the Milwaukee area and on to our final stop at Gateway Classics in Kenosha.
We wound up visiting Plymouth fan Al Breu to use the lift in his home shop and Dave got a few more rods shimmed. Then, we reloaded the car and went to lunch with the Marshfield Lions. After that, we headed to the Comfort Inn at Plover, Wis., where they have a Yellowstone Pub with memorabilia from the trail. John Gehrke of nearby Stevens Point came to see us with his unrestored 1928 Oakland.
As you can see, the tour was a challenge, but in the spirit of Michael J. Dowling, we carried on through thick and thin to achieve our goal. Initial feedback tells us that we have brought in over $7,000 in donations for the Lions camp. Hopefully that number will go up as more people hear about the Century for Sight tour and more donations roll in.
The Oakland took the checkered flag in the rain at Kenosha, Wis.
