Chevrolet Introduces Updated 2019 Camaro

C

hevrolet recently introduced a facelifted 2019 Camaro, less than three years since the current sixth-generation model was introduced. The updated muscle car features some design improvements, new available technologies and the first-ever Turbo 1LE model. The updated design of the car was not only to improve its appearance, but also to improve performance. The grille details and hood and fascia vents were altered to optimize airflow to either cool components or help minimize drag or lift. The new front end styling features distinct differences between LS/LT, RS and SS models with the ZL1 retaining its airflow-optimized front end. Near rear fascias will also be featured on all models with specific diffusers on the RS and SS when equipped with the Dual Mode Exhaust. New LED taillamps offer a more sculptured evolution of Chevrolet’s signature dual-element design with red lenses being used on LS and LT while the RS, SS and Zl1 features dark-tinted neutral-density lenses. As mentioned, the Camaro will be offering a Turbo 1LE package which rounds out Camaro’s lineup of 1LE trackoriented cars. It comes with the 2.0L turbocharged engine and exclusively with a six-speed manual and a tailored chassis package derived from the V6 1LE model. Highlights for the new model include FE3 suspension with large-diameter front and rear MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2018

stabilizer bars, Brembo brake package, nearly perfect 50/50 weight balance, drive mode selector, and interior upgrades. In terms of new tech, the Camaro will offer Chevrolet’s next-gen Infotainment 3 with all-new systems that provide a more personalized experience and more intuitive interface. The standard system features a 7-in. colour touchscreen with an 8-in. offering available as well. Other new technology features include standard rear camera on select models, Forward Collision Alert and Enhanced Performance Data Recorder system. Finally, for the first time, the Camaro SS will be offered with the 10L80 10-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission featuring custom launch control and line lock.

Of the almost 126,000 examples sold, 81,866 of those were sold in the United States which accounts for nearly one-third of all sales. Here in Canada, the Mustang was also our own best-selling sports coupe for the third straight year with 8,348 cars being sold which was a 9-percent increase over 2016. The study also showed that the most popular configuration worldwide was indeed the Mustang GT with the ever-capable 5.0L V8 engine under the hood. Since global exports of the Mustang began in 2015, through December 2017, Ford has sold a grand total of 418,000 Mustangs around the world.

Dodge Teases the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat and 2019 Charger Dodge has released a teaser image and some information regarding the upcoming 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat which will reach back into Dodge’s 100plus-year history and introduce a new dual-snorkel hood on Hellcat models. This pays homage to the distinctive Mopar design themes for some of its most famous muscle cars of the past. The new, fully functional hood is much like the ones found in the 1960s and 1970s but with a new, modern interpretation that provides an even more aggressive look and provides maximum air intake to the supercharged V8 that propels the Hellcat. There has been some speculation that this could mean an increase on the power derived from the supercharged 6.2L but no other information will be shared until sometime this summer, says Dodge. We will be sure to keep you posted as information is released. Also released recently by Dodge is a teaser image of the revamped Dodge Charger Performance lineup for 2019 which includes upgrades inside and out. Among the changes, Dodge says, are an all-new grille design which will extend the aggressive front end to accentuate visual width. No other information has yet been released and as with the 2019 Hellcat, Dodge says more information will be revealed this summer.

John Yamamoto’s ultra-rare 1967 Shelby GT350 Story and Photos by Cam Hutchins

T

here are very few Carnuts on this planet that do not know of Carroll Shelby and his amazing influence on our car culture. Assembling the cars using chassis supplied from AC Cars in England, it is a true modern David-versus-Goliath story. Flushed with success after taking a Ford V8 and stuffing it into the small British sports car, Shelby was approached to make the new Mustang more of an enthusiast car. Shelby joked about the Mustang being a secretary’s car, but took the challenge. It seems everywhere we go now, we see the new Ford GT500s and to a lesser degree GT350s that are built by a modern version of Shelby American at its Las Vegas facility. But the original GT350s and GT500s were built in extremely small numbers, and

back in the ‘60s, they were much more elusive. I have been told that no 1965 GT350s were sold new through the dealer network in Canada. Fogg Motors in New Westminster, B.C. sold two new white GT350s in 1966. So the actual fact of owning one of these cars is always an interesting story. John Yamamoto is no stranger to the allure of the magical cars of Carroll Shelby, but he certainly scored big on one of the last 1967 GT350s Fogg Motors in New Westminster sold. Yamamoto’s other Shelby is a 1969 GT350 convertible he bought out of San Juan Capistrano for his 50th birthday. When it was time to buy his second Shelby, the whole of North America was scoured for the correct car. He wanted a 1967 fourspeed model, since for 1968 the production was no longer at Shelby American’s Los Angeles facility, but at A. O. Smith near Dearborn. Starting the search in 2014 with no success finding the right car, in 2016 Yamamoto asked a fellow he knew, if he wanted to sell his GT350. He knew Glen Hobbis of Cap’s Bicycles had a car that fit the bill, and after making Yamamoto make an offer, he rejected it as too low. Another sweeter offer was also rejected before Yamamoto asked what it would take for the car to be sold. The $100,000 price was a bit too high, so Yamamoto left without his prized car. After stewing it over for a couple of months, he called Hobbis and bought the car. The original owner was Garth Jackson, and he remembers wanting a Shelby and hearing

ton cars, and one prototype) compared to just over 2,000 GT500s. In September of 1967, Fogg Motors had two Acapulco Blue GT350s, one an automatic and one a four-speed. Of course, Jackson wanted the three-pedal version and he remembers paying just over $5,000. His car was a stripe delete car, although technically they all were, as the stripes were painted at the various Shelby Dealers upon delivery. Being a later build meant the grille-mounted highbeam headlights were spaced far apart, or an “Outboard Headlight” car to Shelby enthusiasts. Of the 56 Acapulco blue with four-speed GT350s built, only 11 had wheel covers as opposed to aluminum alloy wheels. more the young hip professionals than the street racing kids. Much of the styling was done through a creative use of fibreglass, including the front end being three inches longer, a correspondingly longer hood with a dual opening scoop, the integral kicked-up rear decklid incorporating a spoiler, and Cougar sequential taillights. The 1967 tail lights did not use the diecast chrome covering trim of the Cougar tail lights, and then A. O. Smith switched to 1965 Thunderbird tail lights for 1968 Shelbys, complete with the chrome trim. The Shelby cars came standard with the deluxe interior with aluminum trim, a special woodgrain steering wheel, and a roll bar with inertia-reel shoulder harness seatbelts. Shelby included a 140-mph speedometer and 8,000-rpm tach. The Rally-pac guages that hugged the steering column on the 1966 Mustang were turned upside down and mounted under the dash for the 1967 Shelby. It housed an ammeter and oil pressure gauge, and this car also has a clock between the speedo and tach. The suspension started as the competition suspension from Ford and was tweaked a bit, using progressive-rate springs and a larger front sway bar, lowering the front end one inch. It weighed only 3,360 lbs., compared to a 2017 Mustang Shelby GT350 weighing in at 3662 lbs. but the 2017 has many more safety components, structural rigidity and air conditioning, etc. Jackson lived on the Westside of Vancouver; he worked as a bookkeeper for a furniture company and drove the car as his daily driver for seven years. tion property and decided to buy a Pinto Station Wagon to drive instead of Mr Shelby’s magical machine! After a decade in storage and with the imminent sale of his Mother’s house, the Realtor mentioned the car to Martin Lammers, who ran a body shop in Port Coquitlam. He bought the car to restore and the car’s engine would not turn over, necessitating a rebuild. The car was partially dismantled and then it was decided just to give it a proper paint job. There was one small rust spot in the rear quarter panel and the interior was so good he only had to re-dye the carpets. The rest of the interior is original. The body shop had never registered the car, as they were planning on “Curbing” it. from the back of the parts department with a hood for a GT500 with air conditioning, with the extra louvres. They said they knew it was not the right hood, but would he take it anyways? So that is why this car is the only 1967 GT350 to properly wear an A/C GT500 hood! The Shelby even went on two trips to Winnipeg to visit family. The car was never raced other than a few traffic light “Winternationals.” The car was still a fully functioning car when it was put into storage in the garage behind his Mother’s house in Vancouver in the mid ‘70s. The car was not put in the garage to have an engine rebuilt or maybe some bodywork; that would have been acceptable. What actually happened is tantamount to sacrilege - Jackson bought a vaca-

This is when Glen Hobbis bought the car before it was completed, and became the “second” owner. It had 94.000 miles on her when Hobbis bought it in the mid 1980s, and he had the car for three decades. Yamamoto considers himself lucky to have such a special car and is a member of the local Shelby club. He recently purchased

a set of Kelsey-Hayes five-spoke Magstar wheels for the car, as the thought of losing the irreplaceable hubcaps was too much to think about. The car is fully sorted out and a joy to drive. The lack of air conditioning is not a problem in the Lower Mainland’s moderate climate, but maybe the trips to the interior or any more trips to Winnipeg will not be during the middle of summer. The local Shelby Club is very active and Yamamoto will be busy showing off his new ride for quite some time...and maybe a few red light “Winternationals” of his own!

CANADIAN DEALERS

I

n researching the Shelby Dealer network in Canada, I was surprised at the lack of info available. I found references for Fogg Motors of course, but enthusiasts have told me there was Healey Ford in Edmonton, Metro Ford in Calgary, Frontier Motor sales in Niagara Falls and a dealer in Winnipeg. I found no info on those, but found Rankin Ford was in London, Ontario. Rankin apparently only sold twenty Shelbys, and most of those were GT500 KRs. Dominion Motors was located on Third Avenue in downtown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and only sold Shelbys for one year. One 1967 GT350 and 14 1968 Shelbys including one GT500 KR that was actually used as a demonstrator before being sold. Another big racing dealership was Sud Ford in Quebec. Sud, of course French for “South,” was one of Canada’s largest Ford dealers. It was located in Longueuil, Quebec and almost half of the pics showing Sud Ford-supplied cars showed dirty Shelbys in the snow. They also ran an extensive race program of Shelbys and Fords and hosted high-performance clinics.

It turned out that Oldsmobile doors worked perfectly after the customizer made a 1-1/2 inch cut in them. The doors were lettered with “American-British Cycles: BSA Motorcycles” and carry the names of Warner and Ball and phone number of their Portland business. (This was in pre-Internet days of course, so there was no Website, You Tube or Facebook information). A GMC pickup—probably the same one the panels came from—donated its cargo bed. Since there was some open space between the Cadillac rear fenders and the truck bed, the fabricators added a “side-mounted” spare tire on each side. These sat on small running boards. The Caddy rear bumper guards were modified to fold down, as was the license plate holder. With these parts in their lowered position, the tailgate of the Caddy pickup could be lowered flat.

Three British-made BSAs could be carried in the bed in a pinch, with the centre one facing the opposite direction from the other two. To give an even broader scope to the kind of projects Sharp Touch can take on, some of their recent projects include a real 1966 AC Cobra, a 1965 Ferrari 275GTB and a 1957 Mercedes 300SL Roadster. In addition, they are also well-versed in muscle car classics like Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, Challengers and the lot. In terms of some of the ongoing projects Sharp Touch has going currently, a few definitely stood out including a fully-custom 1967 Ford Mustang fastback with a Whipple-supercharged Coyote motor, a 1967 Chevelle featuring a Richmond-built big-block, Art Morrison chassis and a plethora

ften when a business expands to a larger location, it can be seen as a measure of success, in the sense that it was becoming clear that the business was going to exceed the current spot and in order to grow further, a larger space would be needed. This is just what happened with Sharp Touch Restorations out of Maple Ridge B.C., when owner Travis Brown decided to move to their almost 9,000 square-foot location in 2015 after spending the previous 12 years in a 3,000 square foot location at his house. This has allowed more space to take on even more projects, and the equipment to take their builds to the next level. At some point in 2002, Travis had decided it was time for a change from the job he was currently at, which specialized in 1960s Corvette restorations, and opened up his own shop, starting out in a 900 square-foot location for the first year, before taking it to the aforementioned 3,000 square-foot one at his house. Sharp Touch would continue to run out

of custom mods, and a Dodge Charger mounted on a Viper platform with an 11-in.-wide body modification. These, and many of the other ongoing projects, are just another example of a shop that can do anything from fully customized builds on modern chassis, to complete restorations and everything in between. Travis and his team are excited about the future and the kinds of builds they can take on, and look forward to creating many more amazing vehicles for their customers. One notable such vehicle that is nearing the finishing stages is a full Resto-Mod 1970 Chevelle that was not at the shop during our visit but, after taking a look at artist’s renderings, is sure to make some hay in the local car community. Travis hopes that if all goes well, he will be able to showcase the car at the upcoming 2018 SEMA show, which is the ideal platform to show off the kind of top quality work he and his team can do. For the latest info on Sharp Touch or to get in touch with them to talk about a possible project, look them up on Facebook or give them a call at 604-961-8582.

of that location for the next 12 years, where they produced a number of memorable cars including five that were featured in magazines. As the business continued to grow, Travis decided to expand once again and moved into the current location in 2015, and expanded even further last year when he scooped up another shop down the street from the main location, specifically for fabrication work. Travis currently employs a staff of eight guys who are all extremely talented, and above all else ‘car guys,’ which really shines through in the finished products, as they all share the same level of passion and detail in creating the best possible product they can. After talking with Travis, it became immediately clear that Sharp Touch is one of those shops which really can handle anything and everything

PARTS STORE Flex-A-Lite’s New Advanced Transmissionand Engine-Oil Coolers

Toyo Tire Canada has recently introduced the Proxes Sport Ultra-High-Performance Summer tire, which combines enhanced dry and wet road traction with responsive handling and durability. The asymmetric tread design improves the Proxes Sport performance from its predecessor, the T1 Sport. The inside technology has been engineered for improved braking and cornering performance while the outside assists with quick responsive steering and driving stability. The tire is available in sizes to fit 17- to 20-in. wheels with 79 different sizes to suit most vehicles.

Flex-A-Lite has introduced a new line of advanced transmission and engine-oil coolers which feature all-aluminum construction for minimum weight and maximum strength. Both coolers have also been optimized for typical oil viscosities and uses, to provide better cooling without significantly decreasing oil pressure. The transmission coolers are ideal for tough environments like racing or towing, but also are great for just about any applications. The patented dimpled plate and fin design improves efficiency and keeps the fluid mixed as it flows through the cooler. The engine-oil coolers are able to provide up to four times the heat rejection compared to some coolers, and utilize internal turbulator fins built into the cooling plates to keep the fluid mixed.
