STARTING LINES Mopar Begins Taking Orders for 1,000 horsepower Hellephant 426 HEMI Crate Engine
O
riginally announced as a way to celebrate HEMI Day (4/26), Mopar has officially unleashed pre-orders for the 1,000 horsepower Hellephant 426 Supercharged Crate HEMI Engine and kit. The engine, which also produces an astonishing 950 lb-ft of torque, was unveiled last year at the 2018 SEMA Show and is the first 1,000-horsepower crate engine kit offered by an OEM manufacturer. Pre-ordering is available now through www. cratehemi.com and to celebrate the beginning, Mopar shared a video on the brand’s social media channels that serves as a finale to the series of Hellephant teaser videos rolled out prior to the SEMA debut. The engine alone will feature an MSRP of $29,995 while the Hellephant Engine Kit provides relatively easy plug-and-play for experienced installers with an MSRP of $2,265. To assist owners in completing their Hellephant build, Mopar is offering a full menu of products including a Front End Accessory Drive Kit, A/C Expansion Kit, Exhaust Manifold Kit, Rear Sump Oil Pan Kit and a 45-degree Oil Filter. The complete engine assembly includes a water pump, flywheel, front sump oil pan, supercharger with throttle body, fuel injectors and coil packs. Both the engine assembly and kit are also designed for installation on pre-1976 street and off-road vehicles.
Chevrolet Gives Camaro Minor Updates for 2020 Model Year Chevrolet recently announced a few minor changes to the upcoming 2020 Camaro, which include a new front-end appearance for the SS and a new LT1 V8 performance model. The SS front-end appearance is based on the design of the Camaro Shock show car that debuted at the SEMA Show last year and now features a re-positioned bowtie emblem in the upper grille and a body-colour bar between the upper and lower grilles. The new LT1 model combines the content and design of the Camaro LT and SS and is powered by the 455 horsepower LT1 engine which makes it the most affordable choice for V8 performance in the Camaro lineup. The LT1 will be available in coupe and convertible models
with a standard six-speed manual transmission or available 10-speed automatic. Also new for 2020 is the addition of a 10-speed automatic transmission for the 3.6L V6 engine option which is based on the 10-speed offered on the SS and ZL1 models but tailored for the parameters of the V6. Additional 2020 updates include a new exterior colour and an expanded range of available features across the lineup including a new Rally Green exterior colour, Recaro performance seats on LT models and red seat belts available on all models, to name a few. The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro will go on sale early this fall. MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2019

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing Though it may look plain-jane, this 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne is far from mundane
I
t can be argued that lots of good can come from adversity, and certainly having your tail whipped when you think you have the baddest car around, can provide stump-pulling motivation. In 1969, driving a new Vette with the 427 offered one a sort of invincibility when cruising to Wally’s Burgers, a local Carnut hang out in Vancouver. One evening, a race with a 1969 Camaro left the Vette in second place and its owner with lots of questions. It seems the Camaro owner knew which boxes to check and was driving a ZL1-powered Camaro. Not liking

second place very much, a promise was made to one day own a car powered by this monstrous motor! Fast forward to 2008, and GM mysteriously finds the signature aluminum block’s tooling that was discarded after production was halted in the early ‘70s. GM Performance Parts was tasked with refurbishment, and two versions of the ZL-1 were released. The first of only 427 all-aluminum engines showed up at GM dealers and authorized GM Performance Parts retailers. The copy of the anniversary ZL1 came with certificate of authenticity, and an engine plate with specifications. A less-expensive version came with a cast iron block and is called the ZZ427 crate engine.
Snatching one of these new anniversary motors was only part of the deal, and the hunt was on for a suitable Chevy to stuff it into. With a budget that could easily buy any of the coolest cars from Ferrari, a bit of nostalgia tugged at the heartstrings when a 1961 white Biscayne like his dad drove was found online. At first glance, because of its recent restoration, it was too good to resto mod it....but soon, it was evident the restoration clearly was not up to today’s standards. Deciding to keep the look of the classic “drive to piano lessons” plain-jane Biscayne, but deciding on a much better “Lap Time,” he started looking for a suitable shop. He had the mill and he had the car and he trusted Jellybean AutoCrafters to create his ideal Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. A budget was discussed and thrown out; this car was going to rival all supercars. It started with a new Performance frame. One wrinkle, though - almost all the state-of-the-art frames use a Ford 9-inch pumpkin at the rear, and this car was going to be all-Chevy. After begging, only Schwartz Performance would create a version of their G-Machine Chassis using the 12-bolt Chevy rear-end with full floating axles. This frame called for a new floor pan with considerable modification to house the perimeter frame that replaced the wishful thinking of the standard x-frame. The rockers needed to be widened into the passenger compartment to house the outside 2x4-in. frame rails. The chassis is set up to turn 1.06 g on the skidpad and had dual adjustable shocks. Although the shocks are adjustable, the use of race car spherical bushings instead of urethane bushings means this car has either a race car-type ride, or a firmer race car-type ride.
10 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2019
The mission was to keep the stock look of the car until the hood was opened and one gazes upon the all aluminum 427 ZL1 and the massive Monte Carlo bar. Multiple pieces of tubular steel are welded together and bolted to secure points on the frame and body to aid in keeping the frame and chassis as stiff as possible to help with handling. This frame was more suited to a trunk mounted fuel cell than the stock 1961 underslung affair. But the look of the original tank was more important, so the massive rear sway bar had to be rerouted through channels cut and welded through the frame rails. This leaves the inside of the trunk absolutely stock looking. The wheels were specially made to clear the six-piston rotors and 14-in. discs all the way around. A power brake booster could not fit with the big valve covers of the ZL1, so with a rework of the brake pedal mechanism and with the magic of leverage, a brake pedal ratio of 8-to-1 un-boosted was achieved. This big car stops on the edge of a dime! The “GO” is supplied by the previously mentioned ZL1 and churned through a 6-speed automatic transmission. Anyone familiar with the new Camaro’s 6-speed, they know of its hefty girth. Cutting and enlarging the transmission hump was not in the cards, so the car had to have a 6-speed that looks like a smaller 4-speed automatic tranny. Luckily, the brains at Jellybean did not have to get overstressed, as TCI puts out a tranny filling this need perfectly. But the Jellybean boys came up with a neat way of using the Column Shifter transmission selector as a paddle-type shifter. When in “D” for Drive, it shifts as any normal automatic transmission would, but when dropped in to “L” for Lunatic, this bad boy can mix it up with any Lambo or Ferrari as you push away for a higher gear and grab towards you for a lower gear. A description of micro switches and springs is available for anyone wanting to fall asleep....but it works perfectly as it should and is fully electronically programmable. Regarding the electronics of many Pro-Touring cars, this car breaks the mould by using a factory NOS wiring harness without using tricked-out electric windows or door locks. FIRST DRIVE: 2019 FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT350
Track Star
The updated 2019 Shelby GT350 performs admirably at Michigan’s M1 Speedway Story and photos by Dan Heyman
E
very time I drive a new Mustang, it seems to always have something to show us even if it doesn’t look quite as such from outside. While the tweaks may seem minimal, though, they are often a little more than that; the 2019 Bullitt, for example, looks the business to be sure, but in Canada, tantalizing bits like standard magnetic dampers and uprated Brembo brakes up the ante. The latest Performance Package 2 for the standard Mustang, meanwhile, adds the extra-loud exhaust from the Bullitt – both may seem like light adds to a spec sheet, but add a genuine layer to the experience. Mustang, and muscle cars in general, are good at this, adding just enough to make the next model just divergent enough. Which brings us to this: the 2019 Shelby GT350. Even as I made my way to the launch event at the M1 speedway complex in Pontiac, MI knowing that Mustangs seem to always surprise, I kept my emotions guarded. After all; the grand poobah GT500 is just a few months away and that’s where all the focus must be, right? For 2019, all GT350s get the GT350 R front grille which has less front-end lift, an optional rear spoiler from the GT500 and a new tire that’s the same size, but provides better braking and better lateral grip. The magnaride suspension, meanwhile, gets re-tuned front springs that are ten percent stiffer at the front and five percent softer at the rear, as well as a ten percent larger-diameter rear sway bar. The ABS has also been tuned for better balance on track, to help better keep the vehicle’s weight going in the 30 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2019
direction the driver intends it. It may be a little easier to sense all that while on the track, but it can also be felt on the road through faster sweepers. To test that, we took the GT350 out to the streets of Pontiac before taking to the track. Unfortunately, this part of Michigan is fairly flat, so long sweepers like that are – well, we saw none, actually. What we could feel though, is just that much more grip on acceleration; it’s much tougher to get the rear end unsettled as you pull – perhaps a little too aggressively – away from a stoplight or what have you. The main difference between the cars Ford provided for road use and those for the track, meanwhile, was the existence of standard seats in the road car as opposed to the optional Recaro race buckets in the track cars. As we’d soon find out on the track, the Recaros are serious business but if comfort is what you’re after, I think I’d go without. The stock seats are still plenty supportive, but just that much more comfortable
JUNE/JULY 2019 MUSCLE CAR Plus MAGAZINE 31
as you also lose heated seats if you go with the Recaros. Then again, the Recaros are manual-adjust, and the weight savings that provides are a little more in-tune with what the GT350 is all about.
course with a good mix of long multi-apex sweepers and a couple of beauty second-gear hairpins. It’s not a particularly long track so we were told that we’d never see much more than fourth gear. Thing is, fourth gear in this 529 hp flat-plane crank beauty is still good for about 120 mph, which is…well, it’s an Looks-wise, meanwhile, that new spoiler is absolutely wild – it assault on the senses for sure. Especially with the exhaust set looks crazy in profile, it looks crazy when you look more closely at it and notice the inch-and-a-half lip it gets on the leading edge for better aero, and it looks crazy when you spot it through the rear view, where it covers up probably about a third of your rear window. New wheels are the icing on a pretty manic cake. But enough about that. Road drive and accompanying photo shoot over, it was time to hit the track. The Champion Motor Speedway at the M1 Concourse is a 1.5-mile (2.4-km) road
to “loud;” even the crash helmet we were wearing – which does have sound deadening built in – couldn’t fully hide it, especially as I wrung it out to its 8,250-rpm (!) redline – easy to do with the six-speed manual, your only choice. The noise is cool to be sure, but the truly awesome revelation for me was just how absolutely, positively tractable the GT 350 is…or should I say “trackable”? There’s no way a car this big, this loud and this V8-powered should be able to handle itself like this. When I finished my first set of laps, I could hardly wait to 32 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2019
get out there again. Then, what does one do when you finish the next set, and there’s a car available? Well, one goes out again, of course! And again, and again, and again until they basically had to haul me kicking and screaming off the tarmac. This is an addictive, rich, rewarding and all-encompassing experience that is just so fantastic to be able to undertake in a modern car. Just when you feel like things are getting too fast, the brakes haul everything back down into quick order (with no fade, even after continuous lapping all afternoon), while the tires mete out grip just as you’d expect; even trying to get these babies un-stuck was pretty much a Sisyphean task that didn’t happen until I popped the clutch and engaged a lower gear more quickly than I should have. Which, by the way, is not something that happens very often because the transmission’s ratios themselves are well-spaced, so you’re rarely left wondering when to shift and when not to – such are the joys of a big-hearted, naturally-aspirated V8 powertrain.

I am also proud to say that I did all of this without any form of automatic revmatching, not because I’d turned it off, but because it simply isn’t available here as it is in other Mustangs. Also unavailable for the GT350 is the digital gauge cluster seen on other models, which is too bad but not exactly a deal-breaker even if most modern race cars have digital gauge clusters.

You’d be pretty silly to skip a GT350 because of that, though. If you did, you would be missing out on one of the most sorted, extreme and just plain cool cars available at retail today. Once again, Ford has managed to squeeze just that much more out of the Mustang, just enough to turn it into a different car.

FEATURE: DON GARLITS MUSEUMS
“Big Daddy’s” Big, Bad Muscle Cars Story and photos by John Gunnell
B
“ ig Daddy” Don Garlits an all-around “car guy” with a passion for everything from a VW Bug to a blown lawn mower. Best known as a hot rod and dragster builder who put his first quarter-mile race car together in 1954-1955, Garlits is also a muscle car maven. His two car museums in Ocala, Fla., feature Max-Wedge Mopars, speedy Chevelles, a Dodge Dart-bodied slingshot dragster, classic “409” Chevys and many muscle “mills.”
Muscular Hemi in Swamp Rat VI dragster.
Garlits opened his Museum of Drag Racing in 1983. Twelve years later, he added the Garlits Antique Car Museum next door. Both of these facilities house muscle cars, hot muscular engines and muscle car memorabilia, in addition to racing cars, drag racing collectibles, historic hot rods and speed parts, oil company goodies and photos galore. Even the many dragsters that highlighted Garlits’ long racing career have engines that any muscle car fan could go crazy over. Take his “Swamp Rat VI” dragster of 1964-1965 as an example. It has a 396-cid Dodge Hemi with Mondello heads and a big blower. Also known as the Wynns Jammer, the car set a top speed of 206.42 mph in the quarter.
In 1963 the red car was turned in for a white one with lightweight body panels. 36 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2019

Both Don and Pat won many match races with the Little Red Dodge. There’s a replica of this car in the drag racing museum. It has a 410-hp 413-cid Max-Wedge V8 with an 11.0:1

Dodge Darts. He took a Dart body, cut off the roof and placed the rest right on top of a slingshot dragster. To make the light, little car super-fast, a 426-cid Hemi V8 was stuffed into the limited space under the hood. The result of all these modifications wasn’t the prettiest racing car ever built, but it was a real muscle machine that went very fast.
Lee Furlong’s white ’62 Plymouth Max-Wedge hardtop is another of the muscle machines in the drag racing museum. The story goes that Garlits met Furlong at Chrysler headquarters, in 1962, when he was picking up the original Little Red Dodge. Furlong never sold his car and after he died, the museum acquired it. It was restored by All Stars and Silver Dollar Cars. The 413 engine’s specs include a 4.187 x 3.75-in. bore and stroke and a 10.10:1 compression ratio. With two compression ratio. The Little Red Dodge’s best run registered four-barrel carbs, the car makes 380 hp at 5,000 rpm and 495 a 12.1-sec. elapsed time and a trap speed of 114.0 mph. lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm. In 1963, the original Little Red Dodge was traded into Massey Motors, an authorized Dodge dealer that sponsored it, in exchange for a white 1963 Max-Wedge Dodge “light-weight.” The new car had an aluminum front end and aluminum doors to cut down on its poundage.
Also in the drag museum is another ’62 Max-Wedge Plymouth that was owned by the Chicago-based Granatelli Brothers, Andy, Joe and Vince. Under the red Fury’s hood is a 413 with a Paxton supercharger. Andy Granatelli ran this car through the standing start mile at 163.05 mph. His elapsed time for the one-mile course was 32.53 sec. for an average speed of In the mid-‘60s, when compact car sales were slowing down a 111.5 mph—16 mph faster than any other stock bodied car bit, Garlits got the idea to help his sponsor Chrysler sell more had done that distance in. The car became a rolling laboratory

The car was found sitting in a Pennsylvania field and was restored by the Garlits museum. Muscle car interest changed things at drag strips in the ‘70s. Dragsters with mutant muscle car bodies made of fibreglass made it easy for fans to associate with their favourite brand of car. These “funny cars” continued racing into the ‘80s and beyond. The Garlits Museum has a bunch of funny cars, including a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am version that evolved out of an association between Paul Candles and Leonard Hughes. The bright red Pontiac clone had a top speed of 262.39 in the quarter and its lowest E.T. was 5.892 sec. “Barber John’s” ‘63 Chevy with the legendary 409 engine is another attraction of the Garlits museum. Purchased by John Stepanek when new, the rare Chevy represents the “stock” racing class of its era. The car was a national record holder in 1964 and won the AHRA Summer Nats in 1964 and 1965, the AHRA Grand National in 1967, the World Series of Drag Racing at Cordova, Ill., in 1966 and the Drag News Invitational. Stepanek, who hailed from LaPorte, Ind., raced the 409 to top times of 12.05 sec. and 118.95 mph before retiring it in 1969. Later, his wife Barbara encouraged him to take the car to shows and Chevrolet meets. John passed away in 1989
championships, 36 NHRA national events and 20 “Car Craft” All-Star selections. Garlits’ museum has a Jenkins’ 327 Nova and a 427 Camaro. Besides cars, Garlits has put together a fantastic collection of engines that includes two that were used in vehicles often called “the first muscle cars.” These include a pair of early 1951 and 1952 Chrysler “Firepower” Hemi V8s (one a factory cut-away disJUNE/JULY 2019 MUSCLE CAR Plus MAGAZINE 39

The Antique Car Museum also has a replica of the Garlits family’s circa-1956 repair garage in Tampa that became Don’s Speed Shop, then Garlits Automotive, then Hi-Performance World, then Don Garlits, Inc. and finally the first “Museum of Drag Racing.” Many muscle cars were worked on in this shop during the muscle car era.

Author’s Note: If you visit the Garlits Museum in Ocala, Fla., you’ll see a bright orange lawn mower with a blown Chevy V8. Actually, it is powered by a supercharged Chevy big-block V8. This fantastic machine was used in a Citgo gasoline commercial starring “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind lawn mower.
