Jeep Introduces All-New 2017 Wrangler Rubicon Recon

eep has added yet another model to its already extremely capable Wrangler lineup, called the Wrangler Rubicon Recon. The new model delivers even more off-road capability then before which is a result of a stronger front axle, enhanced rock rails and heavy-duty cast differential covers. The Rubicon Recon Edition is based on the Wrangler Rubicon model, and thanks to the enhanced off-road rock rails that are shortened, it can accommodate up to 35inch tires and is equipped with Wranglerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parttime four-wheel drive system that has electronic locking front and rear Dana 44 axles with power being sent to each wheel through a Rock-Trac transfer case. It will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission and will come in seven colour options. In addition to its off-road capability, the exterior and interior of the Recon receive upgrades as well, such as a low-gloss black grille with a winch-capable design and removable end caps on the outside, and red accent-coloured seatbelts and a dashboard plaque with information regarding the front and rear axles, front sway bar and transfer case on the inside. When you think of a full-sized commercial van, off-road prowess definitely isn’t one of the first things that comes to mind, but with Nissan’s new NV Cargo X Concept, that may change. TV host Ian Johnson of Xtreme Off-Road on Spike TV started off with an NV2500 HD full-size cargo van and turned it into a truly capable off-road machine. The van sits on a new, lifted suspension system with new heavy-duty solid Dynatrac front and rear axles, and has been fitted with aggressive 37-inch General Grabber X3 off-road tires. Under the hood, the standard 5.6-litre V8 gas engine was swapped for a Cummins 5.0-litre turbo-diesel V8 from the Titan XD pickup, rated at 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. On the exterior, LED lighting was added, as was a custom tubular bumper and a 10,000-pound-rated winch. Inside, the Cargo X has been equipped with tons of off-road equipment including a tool bag, full-size spare tire, and portable welder.

We told you last issue about the new Jeep Wrangler pickup that will be based on the new Wrangler JL model due out later this year. Now the latest word throughout the industry is that the pickup will once again be delayed and could possibly be released sometime in 2019 according to a report from The Detroit News. In the report, Jeep boss Mike Manley has confirmed that the pickup will be built in FCA’s Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio and is slated to begin in late 2019. Manley has reportedly said that a name has yet to be chosen for the pickup, but that there are some historical names being considered such as Comanche, Gladiator, or Willys.

TRAIL RIDE: TILLAMOOK STATE FOREST

f you have never been off-roading in Oregon, take a look at Tillamook State Forest. Much of the Tillamook forest we know today was part of a massive forest fire in 1933 that burned over 350,000 acres. Another fire in 1939 burned a further 190,000, and again in 1945, 190,000 more acres were burned. Much of this land base was held by several logging companies and were foreclosed on by the state for unpaid taxes. A massive reforestation effort took place with citizens planting over 1 million seedlings, a mere one percent of what was eventually planted by every means including prison labour and helicopter drops. In 1973, the area recovered to the point that the Tillamook burn was designated as the Tillamook State Forest. Today, much of the forest is open to the public with 4x4, OHV and hiking trails crossing the area. At certain times of year, and during logging activity, there are trail closures to help keep the trails stable. There are lots of links online to help you plan any visit to the area, with over 250 miles of well-mapped trails with lists of current trails that are closed for various reasons. I have four wheeled in the area twice over the years with tour groups, and have travelled a mix of trail levels from easy to extreme all around the area. 10 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

Brownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Camp is a popular entry point for 4x4s. The trail system is located east of Tillamook off highway 6 and accessed from Portland, along Highway 26 to the eastern point of Highway 6, then west towards Tillamook. There are several trail access points and a wide array of trail levels. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve experienced slick mud, rock piles and

even deep snow on my visits to the area. And plenty of winching, even with well-built rigs on the harder trails. There are also organized events taking place from May to October, with local clubs hosting events that you might be able to join to get a taste of the area without worrying about getting lost or on a trail harder than you had planned. For 2017, the Pistons Wild club (I joined them on a BFG outstanding trails trip in another part

of Oregon), The Jolly Jeepers, Cascade Cruisers, Flat Broke 4Wheelin and others are all hosting events in the area. here have been very few times that I have gone four wheeling and not run into a situation where a winch is required. Sometimes it may be our group and sometimes it is someone who is not as prepared to get stuck as they should be. A winch can be an important tool in safely plucking a vehicle from an impossible situation, or righting a truck after a rollover.

extremely dangerous, this improper winching practice can damage or kill the tree. Use a tree saver strap, along with a clevis.

A winch can also be used to clear properties of logs or rocks. Basically, a winch is an important tool and if you travel the back-roads of British Columbia, you should never be without one.

When a truck is really, really stuck, more winching power can be achieved through a double line pull. To do so, un-spool a length of line from the drum and thread it through a snatch block. The cable’s hook can then be fastened to an anchor point on the truck’s frame or tow hook, and the snatch block will secure to an anchor point toward the direction of the pull. This method decreases the number of layers of wire rope on the drum and greatly increases pulling power. A snatch block can also be used to change the direction of the pull, without the wire rope collecting on one side of the drum.

There are a few things to know before you operate your winch for the first time. What appears to be a simple operation can quickly turn dangerous if basic safe winching practices are not used. Most winches are equipped with a varying length of wire rope and the length of the rope is determined by the winch’s load capacity. The wire rope should be inspected regularly to ensure that it has not become crushed, pinched, frayed, or kinked at any point. Should the rope be damaged, it should be replaced before use to avoid injury.

If you have followed the basic principles of four-wheeling and brought a buddy or a second vehicle, then chances are you will have some assistance in the recovery. Sometimes all a stuck vehicle needs is a little motivation. In those instances, a quality recovery strap ($53) will work fine. Knowing how to operate a winch correctly is as important as knowing how to drive the 4x4 it is mounted to. Misuse can result in injury or even death, so it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with your winch before reaching a situation where you need to use it.

All winch owners should have a winch accessory kit to properly and safely recover a vehicle. The average kit includes a 3-metre choker chain, a clevis, a snatch block, 5-centimetre tree trunk protector, gloves, and a carrying case. Price is $250 to $375 depending upon the manufacturer. Most winches are offered with a winch hook strap to ensure that operators do not put hands and fingers in harm’s way. Always wear gloves when operating a winch or handling wire rope. A single line pull is one of the most basic winching operations. It involves rigging the wire rope to a stable anchoring point and spooling it in to pull the vehicle toward the anchor point. This type of pull can also be used to extract a truck without a winch; the winchequipped truck becomes the anchor point and the stuck vehicle is pulled toward it. It is a good idea to throw a jacket or blanket over the wire rope midway between the winch and the anchor point. This will prevent the cable from whipping back to the truck in the event of breakage. A tree can serve as an excellent anchor point, but never attempt to wrap a wire rope or chain around it. In addition to being 14 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

RUBICON EXPRESS TJ LIFT

ubicon Express has long been synonymous with Jeep lifts, and that still continues today. A few years back, all the control arms bushings were changed to a Poly PT-meg highperformance material, making them far more durable than previous-generation bushings. Along with this change, a whole new array of systems has been added, with coil-over conversions, new 4-link long-arm systems that replaced the rear radius arm kits for JKs, along with all their great Jeep systems stretching back to CJs and YJs with leaf springs. I’ve built a few rigs with Rubicon Express parts stretching back to my CJ7 on leaf springs back in 1998, and the long arm/YJ leaf spring over conversion I ran in my last TJ, so I’m pretty familiar with the durability of their lift systems. This time around, I ordered a pretty typical lift system from Rubicon Express. A TJ 4.5-inch Super-Flex Short Arm lift kit. Typically they retail at a little more than $2,000.00. Many Jeep owners can build towards a system like this when on a budget easily, and many of the parts can also be reused if upgrading in the future to a long arm system, so it fits right in the middle of the pack and offers a lot of features. Both upper and lower arms come with Super-Flex joints at one end. To stop the arms from over-rotating, and to allow the suspension to suck up vibrations and hard shocks to the system, the other end uses a flexible fixed bushing. The short arm lift kits come in 3.5- and 4.5-in. lift heights, while Rubicon long arm kits come in 3.5-, 4.5- and 5.5-in. lift heights (all use the same spring rates). On both kits, the upper arms are adjustable. In the rear, this accommodates adjusting the pinion angle for proper driveshaft angles, and in the front, offers caster adjustment to properly track down the road. The kit also comes with a front

This full replacement link Super-Flex system comes in 3.5- and 4.5-in. lift. The same quality of springs still come with the kit we installed the 4.5-in. lift version. All other components are the same between both lift heights. Replacement rear sway bar links and a nice set of sway bar disconnects also come with the kit. adjust track bar, and while a relocation bracket comes for the rear, I’d suggest upgrading to an adjustable rear track bar as well. All of the taller kits come with new stainless braided front brake lines, all new coils, bump stop spacers and other small parts to complete the lift. We also chose the monotube shocks designated for our lift height. All of the parts looked to be up to the high standards set in the past, the powder coating was excellent and the Super-Flex joints nice and snug. The lift came with all required fasteners, and everything fit as required, making for a smooth install. If we ran into one issue, it was finding an alignment shop that was experienced in setting caster and checking proper angles after the fact. In the end, we sent the Jeep to our local 4 Wheel Parts retail store to get it dialled-in properly. As 4 Wheel Parts sells Rubicon Express kits, they knew firsthand how to make the Jeep run its best down the road. Also keep in mind they offer full install capabilities in most, if not all, branches to install your Rubicon Express lift if you’re not up to the task yourself. I can say these kits are still a great buy for any Jeep enthusiast, and being expandable with other upgrades, a great kit to base your build around.

Our build subject is a typical TJ with a hodge-podge of parts making up the basic lift. Spacers under the coils, longer shocks and drop pucks under the skid plate to keep the short driveshafts at happy angles.

Disassembly usually takes longer than installing the new parts on an older Jeep. We will start at the back by loosening all the control arm bolts but not removing them yet (also getting liberal with WD40 on all the bolts a couple of weeks before the install). Having all the bolts loose and the sway bar links removed lets the axle drop further, while keeping it safe to move around under the vehicle to remove the springs.

The stock track bar is retained, and a relocation bracket keeps the axle square once lifted though an adjustable rear track bar, a good upgrade. A couple of holes are drilled into the stock track bar bracket, and the new bracket bolts in place.

The rear bump stops come out of the cup to access the bolt under it, and the cup unbolts. Longer bolts are provided along with a spacer to extended the bump stops for the new lift height. Some grease on the bump stop helps it go back into the cup with ease.

The new links use the PTMEG polyurethane bushing at one end, and a SuperFlex joint at the other. This helps reduce vibration transfer and also stops the links from rolling back and forth, as would be the case if two Super-Flex joints were used. While the stock control arms look pretty weenie, their pressed metal design actually allows the link to twist a certain amount. The Super-Flex joint now takes care of this flex without twisting metal, while allowing the link to be made thicker and more ridged. The lower links are fixed length.

The Super-Flex joints are rebuildable and greaseable - though they all come pre-assembled. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be surprised if they feel very tight - they will flex when they need to. The PTMEG polyurethane bushing goes to the frame end. Adding anti-seize to the entire bolt will stop the bolt from freezing inside the steel sleeve, and makes it easier to take apart if needed.

The Super-Flex joint goes to the axle end in the rear. Grease the flex joint and add anti-seize to the bolt. Notice the offset of the tube up to the joint. Make sure you install the arms with the tube at the bottom; this allows space for the arms to articulate without hitting the control arm bracket. APRIL/MAY 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 21

The instructions come with lengths to set the adjustable upper arms to start, but once you add the slip yoke eliminator kit and the CV style rear driveshaft, some adjustment may be needed. I found the start measurement to be very close to what we needed.

Pretty straightforward here; leave all the links loose until the coil springs are in their perch. Makes it easier to drop the axle to get the new longer coils in place - just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to tighten the link bolts up!

Shock relocation brackets are included in the kit for the rear. Without them, the shock could possibly hit the rear axle under full suspension droop, and damage the shock shaft. New longer sway bar links are not a disconnect type in the rear, and bolt straight into the factory brackets and use the stock sway bar.

Once the coils are in place, the shocks are installed and act as extension straps, holding the coils in place under full droop. I tend to toss the shock boots, as I find they have a habit of holding dirt and water around the shock shaft.

On the front, the bump stop extension goes on the bottom, and a hole is drilled into the spring perch on the axle. While the kit comes with a self-tapping bolt, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier to install if you use a thread tap to make a nice clean hole.

Installing the front control arms goes the same as the rear, using a basic length from the instructions to set the upper adjustable control arm length.

While this shows where the bump stop extension will go, it actually gets bolted in, as the coil gets installed - not before. Once you swing the coil into place (while holding the bump stop extension in the end of the coil), the bump extension can be bolted in place.

A replacement front track bar is included, and the stock tapered hole in the frame bracket needs to be drilled out to allow for a straight bolt. Below you can see the adjustable Heim joint with the spacers to allow it to flex with the suspension movement.

Removable sway bar links are included and come with studs you can install in the wheelwells to hold the sway bar up out of the way when off-road, to get the most of your new flexy suspension.

The sway bar link assembly is complete and you can see the removable clips on the axle end of the links. They swing up and out of the way and fasten via the supplied retaining studs up above the coil bucket when full flex is desired.

With the new front stainless braided brake lines in place, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s off to the alignment shop! The shocks are Rubiconâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specificallyvalved monotube shocks that work very well with the spring rate they choose for their coil springs. Unlike a long arm conversion, a short arm kit actually has better break-over angle, as the arms are tucked up closer to the frame rather than extended out.

EVENT: KING OF THE HAMMERS

he week-long event known to off-road enthusiasts as The King of the Hammers took place in February. The 11th Annual Nitto Tires King of the Hammers Race Powered by Optima Batteries drew crowds estimated to be about 40,000 to Johnson Valley, California, the off-road mecca affectionately known as Hammer Town. The week-long event is a great time for families and four-wheeling friends to get together and enjoy some serious competition, and to take their own beasts out on some spectacular trails. The area is famous for some of the craziest trails, that look like they belong on another planet. Back Door being one of the nastiest of the bunch, with ten-foot cliffs to navigate over, and Chocolate Thunder that can swallow up the toughest race cars, never to be seen again. The first race is for motorbikes. It is The King of the Motos. It is enough of a challenge to get through each of the three laps, but in keeping with the reputation of toughness of KOH, they designed the race to have the last lap run in darkness. It was a close race between Taylor Robert and Colton Haaker. Cody Webb was first across the finish line but he had missed a checkpoint earlier and was penalized, giving Haaker the win. Haaker’s win may have been due in part to his good sportsmanship earlier in the race. Taylor Robert went down in a hard crash and Haaker and a few other racers stayed with him until help arrived. 28 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

This was the first year for the legendary Campbell family racing with the Factory Polaris team, and they didn’t disappoint. The Campbells dominated the Can-Am KOH UTV race with Shannon winning by fifteen minutes over son Wayland. The youngest Campbell, Bailey, after having the early lead, had some issues and finished up fifteenth. Polaris Rzrs took the first five spots out of the seventy five UTV’s that started the race. event. Tire sizes, number of shocks and type of suspension a vehicle can use are some of the limitations placed on teams to make it fun and competitive for participants and fans alike. The results of this challenge also had a family twist to the story. Brothers Brad and Roger Lovell finished the challenge first for the second year in a row. The main event on Friday turned into another battle between father and son, Shannon and Wayland Campbell. The two were back and forth for the lead many times in the run to the checkered flag. In the end, Wayland crossed the finish line first but it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to beat the old man who came flying

amping is a great way to relieve some stress and spend time enjoying the great outdoors. You can do it by yourself or as a family. Some children complain about being taken from their video games or television programs, but the experience is one they will remember a long time.

Preparing food is important to any good camping trip. Make sure you set up your stove in a level area to avoid any mishaps. If it’s your first time, then bring foods that are simple to make. A typical propane stove has two burners and a propane tank attached to the side. These are easy to clean and just as easy to pack away.

You don’t have to be an avid outdoorsman or spend a lot of money to go camping. With proper equipment such as a good tent, warm sleeping bag, and good food, you will be fine. If it’s your first time out, pick a spot that’s not too far, maybe about an hour away. Check the internet for the best locations and pre-book your spot to avoid disappointment when you get there. Most sites have attractive locations such as a lake, ocean, or a river close by that you can plan hikes together. This will provide family activates for the day.

Remember to bring lots of garbage bags so you can either take it home with you or use proper facilities at your campsite. Be sure to put your food away in your car preferably to not attract unwanted animals. Clean the area before you go to give the next person the same experience you enjoyed on your camping adventure.

A good tent can make the trip that more enjoyable. If you don’t own one, then here are a few things to know about them. A-frame tents are usually smaller and can sleep two or three. They have a screened door and a small screened window to keep mosquitos out. Remember to close the door after entering or exiting or you will be sleeping with them. Most A-framed tents come with a fly which is waterproof material to cover the outside of the tent. If you’re camping on the coast bring a heavy duty tarp to help with the rain. Dome tents utilize flexible poles that provide a strong structure when completed and can withstand stronger winds. You can also have larger dome tents that can be separated into rooms with hanging walls. Cabin style tents are much heavier but provide much more headroom and more space. The downside to these tents is they are heavy, so plan on driving right to your campsite and you will be okay. I recommend shopping around to see the tent that best fits your needs, remembering you need enough space for your family and gear. n recent years, you may have seen the term ‘overland’ become more popular among four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. In fact, ‘overland travel’ has been around for centuries; in history, it meant horse-drawn wagons crossing the country in rough terrain, or camel trains traversing the Mongolian deserts with spices for the west, but the modern definition is that of multi-vehicle adventures in selfsufficient and capable trucks, vans, SUVs and Jeeps. Some overlanders plan months-long journeys across continents, while others are satisfied with a few short trips every summer. Much of the appeal of overland travel comes from the desire to head into the unknown to learn about and experience new places. Some seek out historical mining towns or camps, others are interested in rediscovering old trails to places of natural beauty. Along the road, you’ll probably meet people, and there is definitely a great social aspect to overlanding. When everyone is taking their time and enjoying the journey in a like-minded way, it’s easy to make friends. Overland doesn’t always mean difficult routes and trail damage to your rig. In fact, most of the roads that overlanders take are in good shape, but are attractive because of their remoteness. For that reason, you can identify a self-sufficient 4x4 built for overland trips by the extra fuel and water strapped to the roof, multiple spare tires, tall antennas, a thick coating of road dust, maybe even lots of stickers from previous destinations. Your vehicle doesn’t have to be a big truck or 4x4 either – many small vehicles and even all-wheel drive cars are seen in far-off places. When selecting an overland rig, there are many choices to consider. Among the most popular are Toyota pickups and SUVs, as well as Jeeps – usually models with lots of storage like a JK Unlimited or Cherokee. Other commonly seen badges include Land Rover, Nissan Xterra, Ford Ranger, and Japanese imports like the Patrol, Delica and Pajero. 38 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

If you are thinking about kitting out a vehicle in 2017 for overland travel, you are in luck. The popularity of long-distance travel and camping means that there are hundreds of manufacturers creating new products every month. Everything from roof top tents to complete pull-out kitchens are available; there truly are no limits to what you can buy to achieve your overland goals. Fortunately, strong competition among suppliers means that overlanding is getting more affordable every day. It’s very easy to get distracted by all of the toys out there, but safety is important. Any trips that take you far from first responders, gas stations, grocery stores and cell towers should mean that you are always carrying a few key items that could save your life. 1) A well-stocked first aid kit (and basic first aid training) suitable for the number of people in your vehicle can be helpful for even small cuts and scrapes, but crucial should the need for more serious care arise. 2) Fires can start easily along trails, especially in dry months. A fire extinguisher rated ABC can help put out everything from cookouts gone awry to fuel line leaks in your engine bay.

Once you are equipped with these basics, you’ll feel more comfortable and more confident on your trip. Overland travel is all about exploring and enjoying the journey, and it would be a shame to avoid turning down an unexplored road just because you don’t feel fully prepared.

3) Food and drinking water are very important – four litres of water and two to three extra meals per person is a good start, and can be rationed in an emergency to last much longer. 4) An amateur radio license for long-range VHF radios is becoming a ‘must have’ for overland travel. VHF offers the ability to use radio repeaters, and some frequencies (146.460MHz) have become unofficial standard communication channels. 5) Recovery gear becomes even more important when you might be in an isolated area where tow trucks might be unreachable or very expensive. A properly rated recovery or snatch strap along with a couple of shackles and a means to connect them to your vehicle can make all the difference.
