OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
Taking it Off the Streets! F
or over 20 years, we at RPM Media have been publishing Canada’s leading automotive titles geared specifically towards the Canadian Automotive Enthusiast, and for some time now, we have been receiving a great deal of interest from readers and advertisers alike, requesting that we provide additional editorial content specifically focused on off-roading. While we have always had some off-road coverage in our popular title Trucks Plus, it has become obvious that there is a real demand for us to be providing a publication that deals exclusively with all things off-road. With that being said, it was an easy decision to expand our existing Plus family of publications to include an additional title….Off-Road Plus. The pages of Off-Road Plus will be filled with informative articles on getting your ride prepared to take on any terrain... and look good while doing it. We will be profiling all of the latest aftermarket products being made available by an ever-increasing number of manufacturers for the off-road enthusiast, and providing technical how-to features on how to have them properly installed. We will also be reporting on a variety of some of the most challenging trails and events across North America, as well as the people, clubs and vehicles that take them on. Like our other titles, OffRoad Plus is available through industry-leading aftermarket locations as well as custom and speciality shops… free of charge. In addition, we will be sending copies to off-road clubs and associations across the country for their meetings. For those who would like copies for their members (at no charge) all they need to do is send an email to info@rpmcanada.ca and we will be happy to ship out the appropriate number of magazines. We sincerely hope you enjoy the stories and features of Off-Road Plus magazine and we welcome and look forward to your feedback! Sincerely Dean Washington, Publisher

What Do We Know About the Next-Generation Jeep Wrangler?
T
suggested that in a conversation they had with Jeep’s global chief Mike Manley, it was suggested that a hybrid version of the SUV is possible for the new generation and that it could improve torque distribution. The new Wrangler will still feature a body-on-frame construction but will incorporate lightweight aluminum material in combination with traditional steel.
he next-generation Jeep Wrangler is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming vehicles here in North America, especially amongst the off-road community, as few vehicles have ever demonstrated such a true off-road prow- The new Wrangler isn’t expected to ess as the Wrangler. While exact details are not yet drastically change the looks of the known, bits and pieces are beginning to surface current model (pictured here). as we get closer and closer to the anticipated late 2017 release as a model year 2018. One thing we do know for sure is that the new version will be called the Wrangler JL and will mostly have the same overall look as its predecessor with some slight aerodynamic improvements and the introduction of LED lighting. Under the hood, it isn’t yet exactly clear what engines will be offered, but there is a strong sense that an EcoDiesel V6 engine option is a strong possibility which would likely be a huge hit here in North America. Other rumoured engine options include a turbocharged 4-cylinder and a gasoline V6, with all engines being paired to either a 6-speed manual or new-for-Wrangler 8-speed automatic. Jeep’s Gladiator Pickup Concept debuted back in 2005. Another widespread rumour over the past number of years is the introduction of a Wranglerbased pickup which has finally been confirmed by Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and Jeep CEO Mike Manley at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Again, not a whole lot is known about the new model but what we do know is that it will obviously be based on the new Wrangler JL. Jeep has produced pickups in the past, but this is going to be the first one based on a Wrangler model. Spy shots have surfaced online recently that depict the Wrangler pickup based on what appears to be a four-door Wrangler Unlimited model. More information will become available throughout the year as we get closer to the unveil of the Wrangler JL and its pickup counterpart, and we will be sure to keep you posted.
Ford Officially Announces the Return of the Ranger and Bronco to North America
Spray Nine---------------------------------- 43 Titan Fuel Tanks---------------------------- 35 Varsity Chrysler---------------------------- 44 WeatherTech-------------------------------- 7 PICK UP LOCATIONS
After what has seemed like months and possibly years of speculation, Ford has made it official by announcing the return of both the Ranger mid-size pickup and Bronco mid-size SUV to the North American market starting in 2019 for the Ranger, and 2020 for the Bronco. Little is currently known about either returning model right now, but it is expected that they will share a platform. The Ranger is still currently being sold in other markets besides North America, and it is speculated that we here will get the next-generation model in time for its debut. Ford last produced the Ranger here in North America back in 2011, and given the current resurgence of the mid-size pickup market, it certainly seems to be coming at the right time. The Bronco has long been gone, as it was last produced by Ford in 1996, but it still maintained a kind of cult following, especially in the off-road world. OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017

Return of the Raptor! After building a solid reputation with the first Raptor, Ford hopes to build on its success for the second go-round
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Ford
I
’ve been to the desert on a horse named Raptor. The first time was in August of 2009. That was for the first appearance of the then all-new 2010 Raptor – a truck that, at the time, I described as “part pickup, part desert racer, and part Voodoo magic.” Now I’m back. The desert is the same but the truck has changed. It’s now the second go-round for Raptor - a truck that has built a solid reputation and faithful following since its launch. Of course, the problem with following up a wildly successful product intro is how do you top it?
Circling the new Raptor, I can see that it has grown. Two inches taller, and six inches wider, it hulks over its massive 37-inch BF Goodrich KO2 tires. While, as I mentioned, all Ford truck cabs are now the same, the Raptor body panels from the A-pillar forward are unique, as are many of the design cues. Unique rounded wheel arches and lip mouldings shield the body from the spray coming off those specially designed tires, while a lowered beltline makes the truck look planted despite its height. Practical features like shortened, pulled-back bumpers and full skidplates also create a unique look. The mesh grille carries LED signature lights and blacked out headlamps. The hood sports functioning air intakes while the huge Ford logo front and back removes any doubt as to who this truck’s daddy is. To start with, the introduction of the 2017 Ford Raptor completes an alignment of Ford’s truck cabs that will no doubt save them money and offer quicker updates to all the lines. Super Duty, F-series and even Raptor now all share the same cabs. Chassis continue to vary but what’s planted on top is now built on one line and serves every model. In the case of Raptor, adapting to this new aluminum cab also meant having to re-engineer many of the components and bits of running gear on the original. The good news is that Ford Performance didn’t just make the new cab fit the old chassis; while they were at it, they improved the whole truck.
12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
One of the much publicized advantages of the aluminum body is the weight reduction of 500 pounds that the engineers put to good use, as many of the Raptor’s parts are much heavier than those found on a F150. The Raptor interior carries most every convenience that Ford normally offers in its high-end trim packages. However, this does include special deep-bolstered seats that cushion and hold the body during off-road running. These seats carry embroidered Raptor logos and are available with colour-accented leather. The steering wheel, too, is leather-covered and features paddle shifters. A nice addition are
the factory installed auxiliary switches in the overhead console. Easy to reach, they are perfect for wiring aftermarket additions like winches and extra lighting. To understand how far a vehicle has progressed, you have to know where it started. That first Raptor was powered by the 5.4-litre 3valve V8 that made 320 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. It was coupled to a six-speed transmission and its 4WD systems, while impressive, required the driver to change settings as needed. In other words, it needed an experienced off-roader to take full advantage of its prowess. Now, a scant seven years later, the tech in this truck is so advanced that any novice can get the most out of this truck using a Terrain Management System that not only switches between 2WD,
4WD HI/LO and AWD, its power output is computer calibrated and controlled, matching the needs of the ground it’s pounding. This time around, the power is being made by a new standard engine, the 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost HO that pushes 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque through a ten-speed automatic transmission that is not sequential – it picks gears as needed. The Raptor’s suspension was always at the heart of its design – yet even that has been upgraded with more travel and ride height using new FOX shocks (now with a 3-inch-diameter barrel) with nine-stage bypass damping. Approach, departure and breakover angles have increased (30-degrees in the front and 22-degrees in the rear) and a true dual exhaust system is pushed high up into the body with exits at bumper height. A new 360-degree camera system has special applications for off-road running, like being able to see over sharp drops that the nose would otherwise obstruct. Every one of these things just makes the Raptor that much more capable off-road; however, never forget, this is a street-legal truck that you can easily use as a daily driver. Driving the Raptor down to the desert from San Diego firstly reinforced the fact that this pickup does have a split personality – in a good way. Even those big, soft shocks feature a stiffer upper valve that on the pavement holds the truck firmly and flat through the corners. It steers easily, is quiet (even with those gnarly tires) and when treated gently cruised in tenth gear FEB/MAR 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 13

ith the Raptor now available to the general public, it only makes sense that aftermarket companies are already hard at work manufacturing products geared specifically towards the new truck. Many different options are offered including winch bumpers that allow you to add in a winch to the truck’s impressive list of features and will surely help get you out of sticky situations. The Midnight edition features a black appearance which adds to the Raptor’s stealthy black accents. For more information visit www.rigidindustries.com

achieving decent fuel economy. In other words, the on-road Raptor does not punish the owner despite its purpose-built off-road character. But then... set the terrain mode, snug your seatbelt, hammer the throttle and release the beast. Damn! Across the desert flats I quickly hit 130 km/h and held the speed even when the road started to rut and buck. The multi-stage shocks soak up the abuse using most of the long-travel suspension to keep the truck level and running straight. Terrain Management, in Baja mode for instance, spreads engine torque to each wheel based on slippage. This constantly variable system is also augmented by the transmission that holds the gears below sixth while keeping rpms up, to maximize turbo boost. So, no lag when you punch it. Having the computer do all this means I could concentrate on driving,
pushing my vision out to try and see the holes and ridges coming at me. Most of the time, I easily weaved through the obstacles, but sometimes I found myself unexpectedly airborne. Thankfully, Raptor lands as well as it flies. Canadian pricing for the new 2017 Raptor starts at $67,899 for the Super Cab and $69,899 for the Super Crew. These prices include the mid-level trim package. For the luxury package upgrade, add another $7,900. Trucks are available to order now. A lot of time is spent talking about Baja and desert racing when Raptor is discussed. I get it, that’s where it cut its teeth and the Detroit engineers who built it used those off-road racers as their inspiration. But, being a veteran of Ontario mud, ice and snow, I dare say that our Canadian climate poses as much or more of a challenge, one that this Ford should easily adjust to. The Raptor is all about taming the most rugged of landscapes, and I am sure that it will take to the Great White North just as well as it has the California desert.

I’ve decked out a few rigs over the years with Tuffy products (this TJ has the glove box and centre console as well) and when it came time to finally do something about the storage mess in the back of my TJ, Tuffy had the right product for me this time as well. In the past, I’ve used a Tuffy roll-out drawer in the back of my Jeeps, but in this case, I had moved the battery to the rear of the vehicle to make room under the hood for bigger tires and a V8, so the drawer wasn’t an option. I also wanted something with a tougher top to carry camping gear, fuel and the ever-present wheeling cooler. I went with the security deck enclosure. It offers a tough cargo deck capable of carrying extra weight over their other products, the top seals against the tail gate to secure your gear in the rear and from flying out in case of a trail roll over, and can easily be removed if you need to carry something taller than what fits under the top. For me, it also created a safe place for the battery! Doesn’t matter what you’re trying to secure in your rig, Tuffy has a storage solution for you to keep your gear secure and locked in your rig. I’m never disappointed with the products I have used from them.
We all have the same problem when out camping in our trucks and Jeeps – storing all our gear in a safe manner so nothing comes flying at us, or an obstacle gets named after our spillage, like Potato Salad Hill. I’ve used lots of products from Tuffy Security over the years, and in every case, my gear stays locked in place and easy to get to from the patented locking system – and the best part, secure even with the top removed for wheeling season!
The picture here and above are from Tuffy’s website and represent a typical Jeep install of their Security Deck in a stock application. The load try is designed to carry heavier loads than the top of the rolling drawer units, while still giving easy access to gear at the back of the storage area and security by fitting tight to a locked tailgate.
STEP 1
STEP 2
Just like Ikea, your Tuffy parts come well packaged, with good instructions, and I am pretty sure you need an Allen key at some point...
The install is pretty simple and requires only basic hand tools. It attaches inside the vehicle with existing mounting points – no drilling!
22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
STEP 3
STEP 6
The load tray gets mounted last, and slides in rails along each of the sides of the box. Unlike the cargo drawer, the load tray can be easily removed from the vehicle to load tall cargo; however, this entire unit does require removal of the rear seat.
Everything is contained under the load tray, which seals to the tailgate, making for a very secure storage area only accessible with the tailgate open...
STEP 4
STEP 7
The left and right side panel attach inside the Jeep via existing mounting holes and mounting hardware. You can see where I planned on the battery location – it will go into a protective box so my wheeling gear doesn’t damage or arc on the battery terminals.
....Once swung open, the load tray can slide backwards and be lifted up for access to the back of the storage area, or removed completely if you need to carry taller gear. In my case, my tapered roll cage stops me from lifting the load tray right up, but it still slides out of the slots as normal.
STEP 5
STEP 8
The rear wall of the storage unit attached to the sides with easy to remove twist knobs. The rear panel was drilled for the battery cables and grommets installed in each hole.
Another great option is the sliding cargo tray. I used this version in a previous Jeep, but could not in the TJ due to needing the battery in the back. The cargo box can hold cargo on top, the draw slides out and holds a ton of gear, and is easier to access stuff near the back. FEB/MAR 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 23
PREVIEW: EASTER JEEP SAFARI
Coming Soon!
A first-hand account on how to prepare for the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
N
ine days, 51 trails, 100’s of 4x4 vendors, 1000’s of Jeeps – must be Easter Jeep Safari time again!
Its like seeing those first flowers in your garden; Easter Jeep Safari is the sign that spring is around the corner and it’s time to get Jeepin again – that is, if you stop for winter at all… From time to time, I take a break from going to the Easter Jeep Safari, but then it starts to draw me in again just like Sturgis does for Harley riders. 2017 will be the third time in a row and around the ninth time I’ve made the 2,000-km trek from southern B.C. to Moab, Utah. The trip takes us through four states, plenty of mountain passes and even at times snow along the route, but it’s all worthwhile once you see the red rocks of Moab, as you descend from the flat desert plain down into the red rock canyons. Moab itself is little more than a strip of hotels (all will be full for EJS), gift shops, restaurants and bike, side-by-side and Jeep rental companies servicing all types of adventurers wanting to access the red rock canyons in and around Moab. The place isn’t all about Jeepin; there are many ways to access the back country or visit the array of parks all around the region. Arches, Canyon Lands, and Monument Valley are but a few, all overshadowed by the snowy peaks of the La Sal Mountains. Easter Jeep Safari takes place each year during the week leading up to Easter, so it floats around spring without a stable date. The Red Rock Four Wheelers, who organize the event and have done so since 1956, have toyed with the idea of a fixed date for years, but it still follows the same time schedule as it has for over 55 years. Easter Jeep isn’t for everyone; it can be very busy, but it does give you the opportunity to have guided runs over the nine days of the event with experienced Jeepers from right in town, and many guides who come from 24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
all over the world to help with the event. And heck, who doesn’t want to be part of the largest off-road event in the world – at least once? Trails are booked via the Red Rock Four Wheelers annual event guide, and it’s free to anyone who asks for it from their web site www. rr4w.com. Keep in mind, 1,500+ four wheelers descend on Moab to register for trails, so the Red Rockers get you to fill in your top three trails for the days you want so they can try and get everyone on the trails they desire. Trail ratings are from 1-10. This means there are trails for every skill level of off-roading, and no, you don’t have to have a Jeep-branded vehicle; all brands are welcome, but most of what you will see on the trails are Jeeps of all kinds. With such a large event and a large trade show at the Spanish Trails arena on the Thursday and Friday, there are also corporate trail rides taking place every day along with many visitors who come in and don’t register for trails. Add in these “renegades,” and there can be well over 5,000 vehicles in town for the week! Like many visitors, I have some favourite trails. Metal Masher (rated 7 out of 10) is near the top. It is not the hardest trail in Moab, but it’s the type of trail you can make as hard or as easy as you like. There are plenty of rock ledges that only the best-built rock buggy can conquer, but you can also rent a side-by-side and complete this trail and take in the fools bashing their machines up the hard spots. The trail also takes you right to the cliff edge above the highway into Moab for some fantastic views. An optional loop takes you to the section called Widow Maker, a near vertical climb that is only recommended for those with better-built rigs. Moab Rim. I try and run Moab Rim every year, though the past few years, we have done this trail in the dark as a night run. Rated a 7 – for most, a night run gives the feeling of a 9-rated trail. The climb up takes you over an array of angled ledges, which takes some care to

Hells Revenge. This trail is the premier slick rock trail and traverses rock fins, taking you to the infamous Mickey’s Rock hot tubs and the Escalator to Hell section. This trail is not particularly hard, and most slightly modified rigs should not have any trouble, but the landscape and scenery are second to none. What you need to know before you go: The web site: www.rr4w.com for registration. Hotels. There are lots of options from camping and hotels to townhouses. Keep in mind, the town is typically sold out for Safari week, so plan ahead and book your accommodation early. Food. If you are eating on your own, register at the grocery store for a discount card. It’s free, only takes a few minutes, you can use your home address and this will save you cash over a week-long stay. Event registration takes place at the Spanish Trails arena. It’s a little out of town, and this is also where the vendor trade show takes place on Thursday and Friday, with 100’s of cool products on display.
square up to the drops. It’s not uncommon to see a Jeep tipped on its side due to someone not taking the ledge drops with care. Pritchet Canyon. Long known as the toughest trail in Moab and rated 9 out of 10. This also means it’s a pretty desirable trail and if you plan to run it for the Safari, expect a long day due to a lot of spotting on the hard sections. Want to run this trail as a renegade on an open day? Try sunrise or you might not make it off the trail till it’s dark. The trail is difficult and breakage is not uncommon.

Open days. If you don’t get every trail you want with the Safari guides, fear not and make sure you get the Moab Safari newspaper. The Red Rockers close many of the trails for the event trail days, as many are one way in and one way out. However, the newspaper outlines the trails that are in use and the trails that are open to the public, so you can try a trail with your own group or join a renegade group at the trail heads. Get the Moab trail guide book (guide to Moab Utah Backroads & 4-wheel drive trails). It’s for sale all over town, it lets you know where all the great trails are including many not on the Red Rockers list, and has GPS
directions as well. It’s also a cool keepsake to take home. On the Friday night, the Red Rockers give away thousands in prizes to registered guests. They do a deal with the trade show vendors – pay for your booth or donate parts in kind for the booth so the raffle is massive. Want a seat during the prize fest? Go tape your unique blanket to the steps early in the morning to try and claim a spot. Also, even if you do not go on a Safari trail, it’s worth registering for at least one to get in on the prizes. Have fun, and be patient on the trails. It can be busy but not nearly as busy as you may think – there are a lot of trails in Moab, so during the day, everyone is pretty spread out. Alcohol rules are a little strange in Utah. Grocery store beer is 3% max alcohol content, so we typically buy our beer in Idaho or Montana on the way down. You can’t have any more than one drink at a time, and hard alcohol is only served with food. That said, there are some great restaurants in Moab; make sure you check them out!

ave Logan is the sales training manager for OMIX-ADA (www.omix-ada.com), the world’s largest maker of Jeep restoration parts, but he is also the curator for the Suwanee, Georgia, company’s Jeep museum. According to Logan, OMIXADA’s Jeep collection reflects the passion of Henk Van Dongen, who owns OMIX-ADA and serves as its Director of Marketing. “Henk is originally from the Netherlands and I don’t know why he has this passion for Jeeps, but he drives a Jeep every day
with the windows out,” said Logan. “I know that in the past, he worked for Quadra-Tech and Four Wheel Drive Hardware, but you’d have to ask him where his passion for Jeeps originally came from.” Logan said that OMIX-ADA has been making Jeep parts for over 20 years and started the Jeep collection between five and seven years ago. “We have 31 Jeeps in our collection,” he noted. “We have three prototypes made prior to World War II, so we have a Willys MA, a Bantam VRC40 and a Ford GP. We also have a GPA, which is the amphibious version of the Ford Jeep. In addition, we have an MB, a GPW, an M38, an M38-A1 and an M17. Those are all military vehicles and the others are civilian Jeeps.” Each year, OMIX-ADA brings several Jeeps from its corporate collection to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. “We don’t bring the same Jeeps twice, so we’re constantly adding more and more vehicles to the museum collection,” Logan explained. “I just got another one last week, right before we left for SEMA.”
This remarkably well-preserved 1978 Jeep J-10 pickup truck with 2,443 original miles has the 360-cid V-8, automatic transmission, air conditioning and exclusive Levi’s denim interior 28 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
According to Logan, the company’s motivation for the museum is to “protect the legacy of the Jeep” and honour its history. “There are these really cool vehicles out there and not everybody appreciates them or knows about them,” Logan pointed out. “We want to preserve the history and, as a manufacturer, we have the means to do that. So, we are collecting Jeeps and holding onto them—preserving them and
protecting them—and so forth. We have the museum dedicated to them and we have a shop area that we use to maintain them.” Logan said that whenever an opportunity comes along to pick up some Jeep that’s “rare or cool,” OMIX-ADA would take advantage of it. “We have a Willys CJ2A Farm Jeep and a Jeep J10 pickup truck with only 2,440 miles on it,” Logan emphasized. “You’ll never find one with that low of a mileage reading.” According to Logan, OMIX-ADA doesn’t want anyone to go out and buy such a low-mileage Jeep and chop it up, jack it up and put big tires on it. “That would ruin its originality, so we’re trying to do our part to protect original vehicles.” In this case, the J10 also belonged to the president of NASCAR. “It wasn’t advertised for sale anywhere,” Logan stressed. “I think that Henk went through a broker or someone like that to find out about it.” Logan has found most of the 31 special interest Jeeps that reside in the collection today. “I’m the curator of the museum, so I find them in a variety of ways. I have a network of people and contacts who I know, so I’ll call them and tell them what I’m looking for. And then, all I do is be patient and wait and someone will find the exact thing I’m looking for. I’ve bought Jeeps off of eBay and I’ve bought directly from people who have original, nearly untouched Jeeps.” This is one of only 1,546 Jeep FC-150 forward-control Jeeps produced in 1959. This model was marketed primarily as a work vehicle for corporations, municipalities, farmers, the military and civilian commercial use.
Logan has a couple of Jeeps on his “bucket list.” He is looking for a Gladiator pickup. “We found a few of them that are good and we’re waiting for Henk to make up his mind if that’s

mine what was original,” he noted. “Then, if we have reproduction restoration parts coming out, we want to be able to look at a really original Jeep and know if we designed the part correctly or not. So, we use them a lot for that purpose; test fitting. We don’t take them apart or anything, but we look to make sure the parts are correct.” Logan said the collection is not corporate. It’s a private collection, but it is open to the public by appointment. “We have to be there to open the door, turn off the alarms and explain what the visitors are seeing,” he pointed out. “We don’t have anybody dedicated to do that. Typically, if I’m in town, that’s my job, but we need to know in advance if somebody is coming. Then, we’ll be happy to open it up, but of course we don’t have a gift shop or regularly opened doors.” what he wants or not,” said Logan. “And, believe it or not, we’re looking for a 1995 Jeep XJ, because that was the last year of production and we want a six-cylinder with low miles that’s very, very original.“ Protecting the original Jeeps is the curator’s goal. “We have a number of models that are like the little red FC-150 fire truck that we brought to SEMA this year,” Logan explained. “It’s all original and has its original paint. It has patina. The lacquer paint is all flaking off, but it’s original and we don’t want to ruin it..” According to Logan, a goal of the museum is to have one of everything. “It’s not that we want to make everything a museum piece, but because our technical department will go and look at the vehicles to deter-

RADIATOR/FAN INSTALL
TECH
STEP 1
Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
K
eeping an engine cool that has been swapped into a place it never belonged is always a bit of a challenge. Today’s modern aluminum radiators are the way to go and companies like Flex-a-lite, which has been making electric fans for years, can put an entire package together with coolers, temperature sensors, cooler guards and fans to keep everything cool and happy under the hood. Cooling doesn’t just stop at the water in the engine though; trans coolers, engine coolers and, with large tires, even steering coolers all fight for space in your project. Our LS swap into the CJK8 has all of the above. I wanted to retain the engine oil cooler. I will be running 44-inch tires in the snow with a PSC ram assist steering system, so I wanted a steering cooler in the system, and a 4L80E transmission, so I needed a trans cooler… Now, how to fit all of that behind what is a really narrow CJ grill. Flex-a-lite does make a swap-in radiator to fit a CJ/YJ/TJ grille area, but I wanted the largest core I could fit. I also wanted dual fans this time as a fail safe, so one fan down there is always a second. To get this in, I needed a wider rad core than the CJ/YJ/TJ LS swap radiator could fit. Then there was fitting in three auxiliary coolers for my accessories.
Flex-A-Lite, well known for its cooling fans, has a complete line of radiators and coolers as well. This package with twin fans is designed for an LS swap into a pre-’80 Camaro - but direct-fit Jeep radiators are right on their web site. Why did I pick this model for a Jeep install? I wanted a wider than stock rad and twin fans, and was willing to put the time in to get the large radiator into the rig. on the same side, making the hose connections much easier in the small space. Of course, this radiator is much wider than the stock CJ grill would allow, so some modifications were needed to my grill to get this radiator in; keep in mind, this was a personal choice on this one. I run a lot of high speed in the snow and sand, and wanted maximum radiator volume – they do make a direct-fit radiator for many Jeep swaps. There are direct fit JK stock engine and Hemi conversion radiators, and as mentioned, CJ/YJ & TJ conversions for AMC V8, Ford V8, LS and regular GM V8 engines. Along with coolers and spare fans to help cool almost any engine.
Flex-a-lite does have the option of custom building a radiator for any application, but in my case, I noticed a ‘70-’81 Camaro LS conversion package that would fit into the space I needed and came with the dual fans I was looking for. This package draws up to 3000CFM of air through a large twin one-inch tube rad core via the fully-shrouded S blade fans, and comes with a variable speed controller for the fans. Up front, I got two auxiliary coolers and the radiator also has a built-in trans cooler in the passenger side tank. While a stock truck LS radiator has a long hose that transfers water over to the driver’s side, this radiator has the inlet and the outlet
As the JK steering gear resides above the frame rail, some serious CJ grill mods had to take place. Of course, if this was a JK front end, that grill is much wider and thinner and has better space. Not to worry, that’s what the cut-off wheel, grinder and welder are for!
STEP 2
STEP 3
Along with the radiator and fan package, I was in need of some added coolers for the transmission, steering and engine oil. FlexA-Lite covers all these bases as well, with auxiliary coolers and cooler guards and bracket kits to get everything into your ride.
The cooler and cooler guards, along with the bracket kit, is a nice package that eliminates the need to put those cooler ties through the fins of the rad like most other cooler kits, though if needed they can be mounted that way as well.
34 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
As I have a full Holley engine management system, I’ll have the computer take care of turning the fans on and off via a dash bypass switch, so I can turn the fans off for deep water crossings. I’ll have a warning light in line on this switch as well, so I don’t forget to turn the fans back on and wonder why my temps are climbing.
STEP 4
STEP 7
The radiator has a transmission oil cooler built in, but I needed a cooler for the engine oil as I planned on using the factory oil cooler lines the engine came with, rather than install a block- off plate which is a popular option. When running big tires, I like a cooler for the steering system as well.
I had to make a slight adjustment to the bracket system to get it to fit behind the narrow CJ grille. Typically, you would use the slotted fins on the end tanks to attach the brackets, but I had to go top-to-bottom with the brackets rather than side-to-side. Also, this Camaro conversion rad had most of the cooling fins shaved off the end tanks...
STEP 5
STEP 8
The Flex-A-Lite auxiliary coolers come with a clamp system that goes around the cooling tubes on the ends of the cooler to hold them to the bracket system. Pretty slick set up.
... which actually worked well for me, as I had a very narrow spot to get the radiator in. I had the brackets tig welded to the top and bottom plates on the rad, which are just tank covers anyway and don’t flow rad water.
STEP 6
STEP 9
The cooler guards are designed to bolt through these clamps and into the brackets. A small spacer stands the cooler guard slightly off the cooler and the bracket stands the cooler off the radiator for best possible airflow.
The end tanks of the Flex-A-Lite radiators are covered in fins, which also act as mounting locations for brackets. Each bracket kit comes with fasteners with backing plates that slide down into the fins.
36 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
STEP 10
STEP 13
Making the grille as thin as I could to get the wider radiator in. I had to make a little trim of the fan shroud where it came in contact with the JK steering box. Again, keep in mind, for a JK swap, Flex-a-lite has a Hemi swap rad ready to go and several versions for the narrower CJ/YJ/TJ grille for engine swaps. These changes were only needed due to my personal desire for twin fans and the wider radiator.
It’s a snug fit but enough room for the big 3,000CFM fans to clear the engine accessories. If needed, I had room to push the engine back another full inch, but this seemed to work out pretty well. Below is the work I did to the CJ grille to reduce its thickness to accommodate the wide radiator. Typically, the radiator would fit between the headlight buckets. Also note how wide the bumper is to the grille – that’s the width of a stock JK grille.
STEP 11
STEP 14
The JK steering gear was pretty close to the shroud, so a little trim was needed. It won’t really hurt cooling, but I made sure down the road I didn’t have a rattle with the steering box hitting the shroud over bumps.
The hoses end up very close to the rad fittings with this style of radiator, rather than a crossflow design with the inlet on the opposite side of the radiator. There are advantages to having the crossflow style, but in this case, the packaging of the engine and rad work better with both inlet and outlet on the same side.
STEP 12
STEP 15
If you look under the hood of a GM truck, you will see a long radiator hose going from the passenger side over the motor to the drivers side radiator tank. Most conversion radiators for LS transplants change the rad to have the inlet and outlet on the passenger side. This makes for much shorter radiator hoses and better fitment for places V8 engines were not meant to be. The radiator also has a built-in trans cooler.
The wide radiator extended behind the headlight buckets which required further modifications to the CJ grille to push the headlights ahead, rather than being inset like the stock grille has. As mentioned before, Flex-A-Lite does have conversion radiators to work better with the TJ/YJ/CJ grilles - it was a personal choice to make room for a wider radiator to get twin fans in place.
