Next Generation 2019 Toyota TRD Pro Off-Road Models Unveiled

T

oyota has unveiled the next generation of its TRD Pro Series vehicles including the Tacoma TRD Pro, Tundra TRD Pro and 4Runner TRD Pro models all of which feature a long list of impressive off-road-oriented equipment designed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). Each of the 2019 TRD Pro models will ride on a 2.5-in. TRD Pro-exclusive Fox Internal Bypass shocks on both the front and rear that have been specifically tuned for each vehicle. The shocks offer great performance and excellent damping, making them ideal for a wide variety of driving situations. Typical off-road race vehicles traditionally have external bypass tubes on their shock bodies to fine-tune damping pressure; however, each high-tech Fox shock compactly incorporates bypass zones inside of the shock. This provides a comfortable ride during normal operation but a progressively stiffer one through the shock stroke to provide ideal bottoming resistance. The Tacoma TRD Pro is based on the TRD Off-Road grade and adds the aforementioned 2.5-in. Fox shocks that are paired with TRD-tuned springs that provide an additional 1-in. of front lift. A larger sway bar is also included to retain crisp steering, and some other TRD equipment is included as well, including an updated front skid plate and a TRD exhaust system with an accented black chrome tip. Inside, the new Tacoma TRD Pro will feature a standard moonroof and is, of course, equipped with TRD Pro-branded elements OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

throughout including floormats, seats, and head restraints. Other distinguishing features include 16-in. TRD Pro black alloy wheels with Goodyear All-terrain tires, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and a black TOYOTA grille, just to name a few. Finally, perhaps the most noticeable Tacoma upgrade is the addition of the TRD Desert Air intake which provides a truly off-road look and is fully functional should you get into some tough terrain where it is necessary. The Tundra TRD Pro also receives a few upgrades for 2019 including the Fox shocks, similar Rigid Industries LED fog lights to those found in the Tacoma, and LED headlights with LED accent lights that feature a unique black treatment. The truck sits on a set of

18-in. BBS forged-aluminum, five-spoke satin black wheels wrapped in Michelin all-terrain tires. The inside features TRD logos throughout, and outside has some of the same upgrades found on the Tacoma, including skid plate and exhaust. Finally, the iconic 4Runner once again receives upgrades to its TRD Pro model for 2019. The same Fox shocks found in the Tacoma and Tundra are used, as is a similar skid plate and interior items such as floor mats, shift knobs, seats and head restraints. Different from its pickup truck brethren, the 4Runner receives a new roof rack that is ideal for larger items or things that you don’t want in the cabin of the SUV. As with all new vehicle announcements these days, the TRD Pro Series vehicles feature a plethora of safety features meant to keep the driver, passengers and fellow drivers as safe as possible. Standard features include Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brakes and Smart Stop Technology, just to name a few. The Toyota TRD Pro models will be available in three colours, in the fall of this year.

Jeep Brand Named Cult Brand Honoree by The Gathering If you were a little confused by that headline, fear not. So were we upon first reading the press release. In short, Jeep has been recognized as a 2018 “Cult Brand” Honoree at the annual The Gathering (Society of Cult Brands) and is the first and only automotive brand to be recognized by the association. Eight different brands and their representatives were honoured at The Gathering in Banff, Alberta for their outstanding courage and unconventional thinking in achieving enviable brand engagement and also reaping the benefits of cult-like status. “Having the Jeep brand acknowledged as a Cult Brand Honoree, just as the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler and new 2019 Jeep Cherokee begin to arrive in dealerships, is a testament to the people who, since 1941, have dedicated themselves to building the world’s most capable SUVs with off-road capability that is second to none,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA. “The global Jeep community is like no other. There is no other automotive brand that is so instantly recognizable and woven into the history of its home nation, yet recognized around the world, and one that is protected with such a passion by its owners, fans and followers.” Other brands have been nominated over the years, but it is fitting that Jeep is the first Cult Brand Honoree. Jeep vehicles, especially the Wrangler, have achieved an iconic, cult-like status over the years, thanks to its loyal fan base who appreciate the retro-inspired looks and capability that the vehicle has to offer.

Nissan Reveals Smokin’ TITAN Project Vehicle with Fully Integrated Smoker and Mobile Kitchen Nissan has revealed what is probably the ultimate tailgating and barbecuing pickup truck, complete with the world’s first fully integrated in-truck-bed smoker and mobile kitchen. Dubbed the Smokin’ TITAN, the project vehicle was built specifically for barbecuing and tailgating enthusiasts and features a custom CM Truck Beds aluminum flat bed complete with a Lang BBQ smoker, three food prep stations each featuring a Partner Steel aluminum double-burner prep stove alongside a Brazilian wood cutting board. A Teton Steel custom on-board 24x24 sink and water storage system is accessible with an easy step up from the flat bed, and a Yeti Cooler can be interchanged with the water storage system when cold storage is a priority. Utilizing the TITAN’s flat load floor, an ARB 50-qt. Fridge Freezer and Slide was added to the back seat along with a custom spice rack. Since food smoking can create great amounts of heat, the TITAN’s factory bed was removed and put on a B&S Custom trailer to prevent the heat form affecting it. The bed-trailer features two Nissan TITAN Boxes as lockable dry storage for smoker pellets and wood chips and features a sliding tray that was designed to easily slide the smoker in and out of the bed. The trailer is secured by a Diamondback SE Tonneau cover and allows the user to smoke food at the tailgate and then pack it up for the trip home. In addition to the cooking equipment, the Smokin’ TITAN features a custom wrap, 20-in. ICON Alloy Alpha wheels and Nitto Terra Grappler tires. The truck, which started life as a stock TITAN XD Gas King Cab Model, will be making appearances this spring and summer at outdoor adventure shows and exhibitions.

Off-Road Legend The rugged Toyota FJ40 has truly reached legendary status

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

O

nly a handful of off-road vehicles have been given legendary status within the automotive world. Without argument, these include, from America, the iconic Jeep Wrangler, the rugged British engineered Land Rover, and, from the land of the rising sun, the outstanding Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. When I was offered the chance to take an incredibly stout and well-preserved, original condition FJ40 for a spin through the arid countryside near Penticton, B.C., I was able to tick another box on the list of vehicles that I have always wished that I could own, or at least, drive. Roger Hawthorne is the retired engineer who owns this capable all-terrain scrambler and is lucky enough to be able to use it on a regular basis to maintain his property and as a recreational rig for his various adventures. Hawthorne was given a heads-up to the availability of the Freeborn Red rig by his Calgary-based daughter who works in the car business. When one of her customers offered the Land Cruiser as a trade-in for a new car that they were looking to purchase, she was quick to recall that her father had always had an interest in the Japanese utility machines -in fact, he had owned several in the past - so she put the two men together.

Initially, Roger purchased the FJ from the geologist (who had owned it from new) with the intention of using it to tow his boat to his cabin. Rumour has it that at the time of delivery, the original owner was informed by the Toyota dealer that as long as he never drove the vehicle above 55 miles-per-hour, it would likely last forever. As a result of this advice, as well as a careful and fastidious maintenance plan, Hawthorne’s FJ is in remarkable shape given that it is now 40-years old. With a mere 104,000 kilometres on the clock, the FJ’s engine and mechanicals all operate as strongly as they did six figures ago. When the FJ first arrived in Roger’s driveway, he was amazed to see how clean and unblemished it was. In fact, it was obvious that the vehicle had never ventured off-road, or even on a gravel road for that matter. This really was a surprise, as even though production ended many years ago, the Toyota FJ40 is still highly soughtafter due to its reputation for possessing incredible off-road capabilities and ultra-reliable engineering. Unfortunately, very few solid examples remain, as the one major downfall of Japanese vehicles produced during the 1960s and 1970s is that they are prone to rust, as the corrosion prevention techniques used during this period were woefully inadequate. A quick glance reveals that this 1978 model has a few minor blemishes visible on the edge of the front fenders caused by surface rust, but with just a little effort, these can be remedied and this rough-and-tumble off-road machine will be well-positioned to keep soldiering on for another 40 years. Toyota originally developed the Land Cruiser platform back in the 1950s, when the company was approached by the U.S. Army with a request for a four-wheel-drive vehicle that could be used by the soldiers and military police it had stationed in Japan. One look at a Land Cruiser reveals that those early designers at Toyota obviously gleaned a lot of the FJ’s styling and equipment

ideas for the vehicle from the likes of the Willys Jeep and Land Rover products that were already in use, but this is a good thing. The majority of FJ40 Land Cruisers produced between 1960 and 1983 are two-door, four-passenger, four-wheel-drive utility vehicles (although there were also limited-run medium- and long-wheelbase variants also produced) featuring a removable hard top and doors, and a fold-down windshield frame. This allowed owners the ability to quickly transform the FJ into a convertible should they prefer an “openair” driving experience. This particular Land Cruiser features the model’s characteristic white roof, an aftermarket winch and off-road accessory lighting. The widetrack mag wheels were an option available through Toyota dealers, but Hawthorne also has the original equipment steel wheels that came with the vehicle stored in his garage. There were two gasoline engines available, with early models powered by a 3.9-litre inline six-cylinder engine good for 125 horsepower and 209 lb-ft of torque. Beginning in 1975, FJ40s were powered by an ultrareliable 4.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine which produces a healthy (for the time) 135 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. There was also a diesel version of the FJ 40 available, but only a few of these made it into the hands of the general consumer in North America.

smoothest four-speed manual transmissions I have ever rowed through, short of those fitted to much more sporty automobile offerings. The earlier FJs powered by the 3.9-litre engine feature a 3-speed manual. The ride is smooth, despite the short 90-inch wheelbase, but a relatively wide track and well sorted leaf spring suspension help keeps the driver feeling confident with the vehicle’s overall handling characteristics, although there is still some body roll due to the high centre of gravity and tall body structure. The manual steering is heavy at lower speeds, but the vehicle tracked straight and true at all times during my test drive. Power steering would become a popular option in 1979. Toyota still produces a wide array of rugged and reliable sport utility vehicles but they have evolved with the times to be far more driver-friendly, comfortable, and better suited for daily duty. These descendants of the original Land Cruiser provide image-conscious urbanites with all the luxury trappings, safety equipment, and all-weather driving capabilities one expects from a modern sport utility vehicle. But they lack the timeless design and practicality that make the FJ40 a true classic.

This example is fitted with the 4.2litre engine under the hood which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This combination delivers more than enough power to allow the FJ40 to scramble up and over all but the steepest hill or washout, and the current owner still uses the robust all-terrain vehicle as his means of transportation for hunting trips. Acceleration is surprisingly brisk for a 3,300-pound utility vehicle of this period, but the FJ benefits from the presence of one of the APRIL/MAY 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 13

FEATURE: GEARING UP FOR SPRING

It’s Wheeling Season!

Get your off-road and camping gear ready Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers

I

f you’re anything like me, when winter hit, your perfectly packed camping gear and tools started to walk out of your rig and into the garage and kitchen drawers. Your power went out, so you scavenged your flashlights and candles and used your camp stove to cook dinner, and now you’re out of batteries and camp gas. Or a buddy was broke, so you packed up some tools and headed to his (or her) place, and now your 10mm socket is gone and your drill bits are broken. It’s time to gear up for spring, and wheeling and camping season! It’s the same every year for me – my stuff is everywhere. Getting ready for that first wheeling trip or camping expedition seems to take forever, as nothing is where is was last September. Everyone’s idea of off-road adventure is different. The last few years for me, it’s been

20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

more “Glamping” style; that’s where at the end of the trail day, I slide back to the Best Western for a soft bed and a pool and hot tub. Yeah, I’ve gone a bit soft. Then I see some people’s set-ups for Overlanding – you guys are dedicated! Roof-top tents, slide-out camping kitchens, camping trailers, 15 jerry cans with fuel, water, etc… nothing short of a nuclear explosion would keep you from your weekend getaways, and you and cockroaches and your freeze-dried packed camping food will be the only ones left if it did! Tools and Rig Recovery Gear First, go buy a new 10mm socket - those things just vanish and disappear to the same place as your other favourite sock. I always have a dedicated tool set. Right now I’ve been using it in the garage – I need to stop that. It’s always when you need your tools the most, you realize you left the tool you need in the garage on the bench. Figuring out what you need for your own rig is pretty selective – I shoot for multi-use tools to reduce the weight of packing 2 tons of steel tools with me. There are lots of great options. Also tools that are not affected by rust; as you know, your rig leaks or you will definitely do that creek crossing when you get to it. There are lots of great HD tool bags of all types and sizes.

ditch and still go skiing once one guy with a lump on the side of his head wakes up – that’s another story. My underseat storage, a Tuffy roll-out cargo tray, locking centre console, straps over the cooler and fuel cans are number one in my rig!

I like bags and wrench rolls better than those clamshell tool kits you can get. I have one - it’s just going to get redistributed into bags - standard tools in one, Metric in the other, electrical tools, connectors, fuses tape and wire in another. This saves digging and pulling everything out of one big bag all the time – that’s how you lose stuff and leave shiny

I’m a pretty big promoter of buying a winch early on. Skip the light bars and angry eye grills and fancy wheels – buy a winch and the tools to go with it (snatch block, clevis hooks, gloves, tree saver strap etc…). A good winch will last a lifetime and can be swapped from rig to rig. If you cringe at the cost of some of the high-end winches, watch message boards and buy-and-sells; great deals come up all the time. I just helped Chris, my buddy, get the king of all winches set up on his new TJ. A used Warn 8274 for 300 bucks that needed a new control pack and controller and cable. He found a used aluminum hawse fairlead and synthetic rope on-line - though there is nothing wrong with less-expensive steel cable. In the end, for around $500, he has a refurbished winch that could literally pull his Jeep up a tree and last for years to come. When it comes to camping, the choices are endless. For the overland crowd, roof top tents are all the rage. I’ll be getting one as well this year to mount on a trailer, as a guy who has reverted to using a term like “Glamping” in an article seriously needs to be off the dirt ground. One big thing I learned when I first started snow wheeling and camping was ditch the air mattress. What is the coldest thing around you in the winter? The air… What’s inside the thing your trying to sleep on? And god forbid it gets a hole (re: me glamping from too many flat air mattresses and sticks up my ass…). Foam is your friend - it warms up with your body heat. Seriously, we have vehicles; we are not back-packing in the Andes, we have room. My foam is right beside a 10-lb full-down sleeping bag; nothing beats the feathers from some bald ducks to keep you warm, even wet…and you will get wet, and cold, and miserable, and at some point, it will make you think, hey, that old guy Albert and his Best Western rewards points may not be such a stupid wimpy idea after all. Wonder if there is a spare room! Have a great wheeling season! I’m seriously looking forward to it and take some lessons from the pictures and thoughts here. FEATURE: HYBRID / EV 4X4

Will We See a Serious Electric Off-Roader?

Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

Y

“ ou bought a hybrid – why?” While it seems like a question you might have asked your neighbour in the year 2000, it could be a conversation topic you’ll overhear on the trails by the end of the decade. Since the introduction of mass-market hybrid-electric vehicles like the Toyota Prius over twenty years ago, automakers have been pressured into electrifying increasing numbers of vehicles due to government regulations, rising fuel costs, and consumer demands. Although you can buy several all-wheel drive hybrids and EVs right now (think Toyota RAV4, Tesla Model X, and the new Mitsubishi Outlander), you won’t find a hybrid or EV system in any fully-fledged, transfer-case-equipped 4x4 vehicle on a dealer’s lot today. While it may seem ridiculous to most off-road enthusiasts, emerging electric technologies are set to change the off-road landscape. Advanced technology has always tended to creep its way into favour with hardcore off-roaders. There was a time not long ago when sway bars and ABS were viewed with quiet disgust and disappointment from enthusiasts, and later, advances like traction control and hill assist were despised even more so. Indeed, we go to great lengths in our rigs to disable, replace, avoid and remove these systems – but for the daily driver of an average Jeep, they’re essential for safety and comfort. Can you imagine an era when purists rejected fuel injection? They probably also disliked leather seats, sound-deadening cabin features, entertainment systems and air conditioning. These are all things that 4x4 owners demand today when choosing a vehicle – as long as it still has a proper low-range transfer case (and hopefully a manual transmission.) In what has become the longest product refresh schedule of any major North American manufacturer, the Jeep Wrangler is fully redesigned only once every 10 years or so. This means that the 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

all-new 2018 model’s JL designation should live on until 2028. As a result, FCA must consider a future where gas-only engines might be legislated into obscurity. FCA is bound by very strict Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations set by the U.S. government in 1975 amid a fuel crisis, and overhauled in 2009 to reflect hybrid and EV technology that was becoming available. The kicker is that CAFE regulations increase every year. (Old timers will remember that the ‘70s quickly brought on wide adoption of exhaust-gas recirculation, catalytic converters, oxygen sensors, air injection, fuel injection, OBD and a host of other now-common advancements in automotive efficiency.) In 2022 (only half-way through the JL’s life), FCA’s Jeep segment must have an average consumption of 6.4L/100KM – somewhere around a Toyota Yaris. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Jeep JL Wrangler is slated to appear this generation with not one but

The Wrangler’s all-new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder features an eTorque “mildhybrid” system which improve fuel economy and launch performance

four engine choices – the venerable 3.6L Pentastar, a four-cylinder turbo, a yet-to-be-named diesel, and a hybrid-electric powerplant. (In fact, the four-cylinder turbo is designated as a “mild hybrid” which really only means that it has the ability to help the vehicle up to normal road speeds in certain situations, when the stop-start traffic function is being used - a plus for emissions and fuel economy, but not much help off the pavement.) There are several advantages to a hybrid or full-EV drivetrain in an off-road vehicle. The primary argument is for torque – electric motors output their peak torque at one RPM, unlike gas or even diesel, which need several thousand RPM to generate their rated power. EV motors can be positioned at each wheel, and could negate the need for solid axles and even differentials entirely. Imagine how capable a 4x4 could be if there were no need for drive shafts and lockers, and each wheel could power itself independently through an obstacle? Also imagine how relaxing an off-road trip would be

if your vehicle didn’t make noise all the time. There’s nothing quite like the silence of stopping in the middle of nowhere and turning off your engine; with an EV or hybrid you might even be able to sneak up on some wildlife you wouldn’t normally see. There could also be huge potential for the aftermarket to take advantage of an EV or plug-in hybrid battery pack. If FCA develops a means of accessing that power when the vehicle is off, you might be able to sustain all of your camping and overlanding goodies for days on end – it would be the ultimate dual-battery setup. Of course, there are numerous well-known disadvantages for EVs and Hybrids (for now, at least.) While lithium batteries are getting about five percent more efficient every year, the cost is not declining as rapidly. The engineering and development work also has a price tag attached to it, so you might expect to pay a premium of between $3,000 and $6,000 for a hybridized 4x4 over its fuel-burning counterpart. (In addition to the previously mentioned off-road advantages, any Jeep hybrid would probably be a plug-in with some kind of EV-only range, something that commuters might respond well to.) A fully electric vehicle would, however, command an even larger price – probably well over $65,000 – because it needs a big and costly battery pack in order to appeal to off-road drivers. Nobody wants to get stuck in the middle of nowhere, so that’s why campers carry spare fuel or fill up to the brim before heading off in to the wilderness. “Range anxiety” is a common phenomenon among potential EV buyers, and it would be even more widespread in the off-road community. A fully electric Jeep will need to have a range that matched a gas powered one at the very least. So how would a hybrid system in a 2020 Wrangler look? There’s a lot of speculation and not many facts. FCA hasn’t yet released any information, and many pundits - this one included - aren’t sure how they would be able to keep current and future Jeep owners happy. Using an integrated hybrid drive similar to Audi and Honda’s hybrid systems could be the solution. A large, flat, plate-like electric motor sits between the engine crank and the transmission, allowing power to be applied in tandem or separately from the gas power plant. An

Chevrolet rolled out a mild-hybrid drivetrain for the Silverado in 2009. Due to poor sales, it was no longer offered when the next-generation was introduced in 2014. advantage to this is simplicity. It could easily be integrated behind a four-cylinder without much more than software integration and a battery pack. Another advantage is that it would allow the JL to retain a traditional transmission and transfer case pairing – a key component of any true 4x4. A second option for FCA could be the retention of the existing powertrain, but without a transfer case and with an electric motor integrated in to the front axle and driving those wheels when 4WD is engaged. The weight saved from losing the transfer case and other components could be used for a battery pack, and the vehicle could even potentially be driven in a front-wheel-drive EV mode. Diesel Jeeps have also been on the radar lately. FCA has finally confirmed that the Wrangler will offer a diesel engine for this generation, most likely in the upcoming pickup truck version. While it’s been the holy grail of Jeep options for decades now, we may actually be in a post-diesel world. The once lauded torque and fuel efficiencies of diesel engines are becoming less relevant in the face of competing hybrid and EV setups. Combine that with the stigma of diesel power in the wake of Volkswagen’s EPA scandal, and you have a consumer base ready to convince themselves that the diesel premium is better spent on a hybrid. If governments have their way, Europe could see a massive reduction in fossil fuel vehicle sales in the next few years. The march of technology is knocking at the combustion engine’s door – and could easily march across the pond to North America too. As we know with almost every other facet of our electronic lives, things change very fast. Historically, cars have been among the slowest technologies to change given their cost and longevity compared to other purchases, and this belief could be turned upside down as a result of fast changes in powertrain technology. No matter what arrives over the next ten years, 2028 could be an interesting year for Jeep. If a fully-EV Wrangler is not produced before then, it will almost certainly hit the market in the next iteration. We may be looking at the last generation of gas-burning Jeeps. Depending on who you ask, that might be something to sob about – or it could be looked upon as a new era of North American innovation. After all, the Jeep is built on the concept of a smaller, easier-to-use, more mobile and more efficient vehicle. Electrifying that vehicle might just be the next logical step. dventure RVing. It’s a title, a brand and an idea whose time has come. That’s a statement that came from surveying the show floor at the National RV Show this year. A variety of new RV’s were shown; each built with this idea – Adventure RVing – in mind. And, while the Millennials are instrumental in this social trend, a wide group of buyers who are seeking new experiences expect these RVs to deliver the access they need.

At the heart of this trend are customers who want these experiences as much as they want the product – and they are willing to pay for it. These RV’s are a means to an end. It’s this want of experiences that the RV industry is answering with units like the ones that are pictured here. What do they all have in common? All-terrain access, off-grid ability and all the electronic must-have features todays plugged-in consumers expect. These are the things that today’s under 40’s are looking for in these units. FEATURE: JEEP WRANGLER JL AFTERMARKET

Benchmark of Excellence Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

he first rule of Fight Club is that you don’t talk about Fight Club.

And for the longest time, Jeep didn’t utter a word about its highly-anticipated JL release. Sure, seven-slot nation ventured a guess and even made a few intelligent inferences, but the badge kept production details hush…until the 2017 LA Auto Show, that is. Wrangler’s cult-like following made but a single request: don’t screw it up. Doing so would only ensure that “things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,” said Car and Driver. Spoiler alert: screw it up, they didn’t. In fact, despite the updated body style being a distant relative to the original Wrangler, the JL “is a carefully considered improvement, if not a wholesale rethink of the family jewel,” continued Car and Driver. If anything, production of the JL proved the Wrangler’s most challenging obstacle wasn’t a sticking point of capability—true believers knew that even bone-stock trim would still traverse the harshest terrains with practical poise, surgical precision, and reliable performance. On the contrary, like

Rubicon Express 2.0 Lift Kit

the tale of Edward Norton and Tyler Durden of Fight Club, the Wrangler was, and really always will be, at battle with itself. “It is the spiritual centre of the brand. It’s the icon that lends credibility to the company in the same way that the 911 does to Porsche,” explained Car and Driver. That’s quite the legacy to live up to with each passing generation. And so, the best way to simmer outside pressures in this situation is to keep primary features “purposefully familiar” as Car and Driver noted, like stable exterior styling, an open-to-the-elements experience, and highlycustomizable platform. Instead, the focus shifted to incalculable hours sweating the fine details. In this sense, there’s little separation between the automaker and aftermarket kings like Fab Fours that, much like Jeep, have nothing to prove when it comes to brand recognition and everything to gain from breathing new life into a bestseller. Remove the infamous steel stamp on its product line and consumers know it’s Fab Fours—that’s the kind of success manufacturers toil their entire existence to achieve, and this South Carolina based biz did it in a decade. A Promise of Greatness and Exclusivity Fab Fours, which markets approximately 65 part numbers, made a vow to its loyal customer base that it would build upon the success of the JK but only carry over the best-of-the-best to the new-generation Wrangler. And in doing so, those parts would have to be reinvented in some brilliant way because for Fab Fours, the biggest insult is to resemble anything or anyone else. What’s in store for the upcoming JL, you ask? A Grumper, ViCowl, and modular flare system that is fully integrated, spanning a six-foot area that owner and CEO Greg Higgs calls his canvas. When asked how complex of a manufacturing process it is and if the decision took the group outside of its comfort zone, he smiled and replied in genuine Higgs fashion. “This fully-integrated system is absolutely super complex and right in my comfort zone. This is exactly where I want to be and what I want to do. [Standing out], that’s what Fab Fours is all about. Take this [Keystone BIG] show, SEMA, or any other event… who is doing something truly new, special, different?” Without dispute, Fab Fours wins the award for living on the fringe.

32 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

Better yet, company front man Higgs remains steadfast in his promise. “The feedback has been 100-percent positive and so I’m ready for that question: when will you have it for the JK? My answer, never. Not going to happen. Of course, we could—that would be easy. But it’s not how we roll. We know our customers and they want the newest, biggest, and very best. The last thing I want to do is make all the JLs look like JKs,” continued Higgs. A trained eye immediately recognizes the small details that distinguish the JL from the JK, but to everyone else, it’s easy for the next gen to blend with its predecessor. “If you see this full-width integrated system wrapped around the front of a Wrangler, now you know it’s a JL,” Higgs articulated. Not the only Master of His Kingdom But Fab Fours isn’t the only name muscling the JL space. Rugged Ridge is another influential brand that’s no stranger to the Jeep scene, with its vast selection of accessories such as LED configurations for enthusiasts who want a brighter path. Now available for the JL are Rugged Ridge’s ments. The JK’s most popular lift system has always been the 2-3.5-in. suspension, and the JL will follow suit,” said Wood. For those fortunate enough to attend Easter Jeep Safari, an annual Jeepers paradise in Moab, Utah, perhaps the new Rubicon Express 2.0 lift kit caught your attention. “[Rubicon Express] recognizes that FCA got it right with the new JL, so the best way to get larger tires underneath your new Wrangler is with a spacer lift,” said Lavery. “Coil Spacers added to the new JL in this 2-in. JL lift kit from Rubicon Express give nice stance and clearance for 35-in. Tires.”

wildly popular Spartacus Bumper, Drakon wheels, Elite antenna base and fire extinguisher holder, and a variety of smaller add-ons like aluminum hood catches and grab handles. How could we forget “the desire to run bigger tires and wheels as the driving force behind the sale of lift kits, and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is sure to be a popular platform for suspension upgrades,” said Kris Lavery, contributing writer for The Engine Block. Dennis Wood of Teraflex drove the JL Rubicon in its stock form for a few days, just to get a proper baseline for suspension testing. “My initial reaction was one of surprise. I’ve been through several new JKs and each of the Jeeps in stock configuration drove so mushy. They had so much body roll and head toss that I wondered how they ever left the factory. The JL has an out of the box, surprisingly firm, and stable feel to it. Spring rate, shock mounting, and tuning are big factors, as well as some very noticeable roll centre improvements,” commented Wood. The aftermarket wouldn’t be the aftermarket without a goal of continuous improvement. Like the garage rat that just can’t stop tinkering, Teraflex and a number of other suspension companies are eager to sink their teeth into the JL. “TeraFlex and Falcon shocks are pouring man hours into the development of numerous JL accessories and enhance-

On the performance side, longtime first-to-market leader Magnaflow made sure there’s an exhaust system option for each individual preference. “The JL has been a long time coming. I think people are really excited about the new features and, likewise, we’re really excited to get those Jeeps on the trail or heading down the street,” said Kathryn Reinhardt, Marketing Manager at Magnaflow. “We have something for everyone, from rock crawler and off-road pro series applications to street (developed for those with getting from A-B in mind.) Applications cover cat-back and axle-back options, with stainless steel and black finishes,” added Reinhardt. Jeep fans demand the same benchmark of excellence from their aftermarket picks as they do from the vehicle platform itself. Such early-to-market goodies only confirm that the JL and its faithful aftermarket supporters will hit yet another home run.

CLAYTON OFF-ROAD JEEP LIFT KIT

TECH

Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde layton Off Road. No nonsense, tough, well-built Jeep lifts you C will be happy to buy. That pretty much sums up my experience with Clayton Off Road. My first exposure to Clayton was a few years ago now, when a beat-up $1000.00 XJ out-wheeled almost all of us in Naches, Washington. The owner said he throws away an XJ a year but will not let go of his Clayton lift. It just had nice balance, didn’t unload funny, wasn’t too soft. Since then I’ve installed a couple more, and while I have heard a couple of times people being OK with the lifts we have written about and reviewed, I never hear back from the Jeep owners rolling on the Clayton kits I’ve installed. Just happy and out Jeepin. While there are more bling kits out there than this JK short-arm kit – you really need nothing else. It’s cool and strong to be square, their signature square tough-as-nails links are 2 inches 1/4 wallthick and slide nice over trail obstacles, and come with a lifetime warranty. They are supplemented by a pair of round uppers in the back, so they can curve around the rear tires, Clevite rubber bushings are found on the large lower links to help reduce vibration, and genuine fully rebuildable Johnny Joints are everywhere else for the twist required for a flexy suspension, while still providing a quiet suspension with no metal-on-metal with the Currie “tough 88” urethane inserts. This 3.5-in. lift can be packaged with either Bilstein shocks or Fox shocks, Fox being the premium, stiffer for more control, choice, and Bilstein for better ride quality. Coils are single-rate wound and made

Clayton Off-Road makes some great Jeep lifts. Their lifts come with their signature square links made from .250 wall material. Their claim is that square is stronger than round – and I can say I have not destroyed one yet, so who am I to disagree?

in the USA, as are all of the Clayton parts with a 188-lb spring rate perfect for the weight of a Jeep. Both will come with the needed extended brake lines and brackets to relocate and finish the install for a complete kit. In a world filled with many choices for Jeep lifts, Clayton Off Road has stood its ground with their best-in-class unibody Jeep lifts to the most modern, and their developing JL lifts slowly filling their web site – yup, it’s still hip to be square! If you have installed a Clayton lift or not, also check their site for their great skid plate systems and accessory parts. We swear they are bulletproof quality as well!

3. The Suspension kit comes with everything you need to complete the install, including extended brake lines, JKS sway bar links, and also some of the best-in-the-business bump stop extensions, assorted brackets and hardware.

1. Up front, both the upper and lower links are square tubing with Currie Johnny Joints for the articulation end, and Clevite bushings on the frame end to reduce road vibration through the chassis. Johnny Joints were the original articulating rod end creation of John Currie of Currie Enterprises, and while often copied, I still feel they are some of the best on the market.

2. Clayton lifts can be packaged with Bilstein or Fox shocks. The Bilsteins are a little less aggressive and have better road ride, while the Fox shocks offer a stiffer and more off-road feel.

4. When taking any vehicle apart that uses wheel sensors for ABS systems, you need to make sure you take care with the ABS wiring.

5. The front links are “kinked” to mimic the stock arms for tire clearance, but as you can see, they are longer to compensate for the steeper angle of the links, are adjustable and just plain beefy.

6. As the Clayton control arms are so large, a little trimming needs to take place on the axle brackets.

8. The control arms use all the factory attachment points for an easy install, and the longer brake lines allow room for the new-found suspension flex.

7. While the upper links are a smaller diameter, they are still far stronger than the stock upper arms and again are adjustable with Currie Johnny Joints.

9. Bump stop extensions are installed both front and rear. Longer coil springs have more wraps and will not compress as far as stock coils, and will go to coil “bind” if extensions are not installed, which could damage the springs.

11. The lift comes standard with the well-built JKS quick disconnects so you can loosen the front sway bar to take advantage of the new-found flex off-road, but still attach the bar when on-road for stability.

10. If your JK came equipped with the transfer case skid plate bar, it needs to be removed to avoid damaging the driveshaft. You may notice here that the JK drive shafts have already been removed and converted to standard design slip joints from Pat’s Driveline. 12. Clayton uses a single-rate coil set up for predictable ride quality. You may also notice we removed the shock boots from the shocks – less dirt accumulates around the shaft this way. With the front suspension done and the new brake lines in, we use the brake line to route the ABS wire.

13. The rear install goes similar to the front. Loosen the stock control arms – detach the rear track bar and the suspension will swing down low enough to remove the coil springs.

14. The rear gets bump stop extensions like the front.

15. Due to some tricky bending, the rear upper control arms are made from round material. 40 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

17. The rear suspension looks great just like the front, but no removable sway bar links are needed.

16. For the rear track bar, a bolt-in extension bracket is used to keep the rear axle located properly with the new stance.

18. The finished product

Judging by how muddy the rest of the truck is, he’s been stuck in there for a while.

It’s hard to see a way in which he got out of there.

Ahhh, the ol’ “mud hiding under the snow trick.” That looks very thick... Hope someone has a big truck to get him out.

Great he’s got someone to pull him out, but what was he doing there in the first place?

How? Just how... Or better yet, why? We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
