Jeep Unveils Concept Vehicles for 2021 Easter Jeep Safari

T

he Jeep brand has once again teamed up with Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) to build concept vehicles for the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari which took place March 27 to April 4th in Moab, Utah. Jeep brought a total of seven concepts, four brand-new vehicles and three that were set to debut at last year’s event, before the pandemic shut everything down. We will highlight the four new vehicles here after featuring the Jeep Gladiator Farout concept, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 concept and Jeep Gladiator Top Dog last year. Jeep Magneto The Jeep Wrangler Magneto Concept is a fully capable, and Jeep’s first, battery electric vehicle (BEV) that is made to quietly and quickly rock climb. The concept is based on a two-door 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and utilizes a custombuilt axial flux electric motor that operates up to 6,000 rpm and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission with a clutch that operates as it would with an internal combustion engine. The small e-motor is tuned to deliver up to 273 lb-ft of torque and 285 horsepower and, without the need to build up RPM, offers torque on demand and a 0-60 mph time of just 6.8 seconds. Powering the motor are four battery packs with a combined 70kW/h of power running an 800-volt system with each pack distributed around the Wrangler to balance weight on all four wheels. Finally, the Magneto comes equipped with a JPP 2-in. lift kit, 17-in. Lights Out wheels with 35-in. mud-terrain tires, custom roll cage, Mopar rock rails, and more. Jeepster Beach This year’s “Resto-Mod” concept is the Jeepster Beach which began as a 1968 Jeepster Commando (C-101) and was blended with a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. The body was modified and the exterior fuses original chrome trim with an updated, brightly coloured two-tone paint of Hazy IPA and Zinc Oxide. Under the hood is the hightech 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a custom, concept calibration that increases the engine output about 25-percent above the production version to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is paired to an 8-speed transmission and inside features low-back bucket seats trimmed in red leather. Jeep Red Bare Next up is the Jeep Red Bare Gladiator Rubicon concept that is meant to build upon a longstanding heritage of hardworking trucks, paired with Jeep 4x4 capability. The truck features the turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine that is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft. of torque paired to a TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission that is calibrated for low RPM shifts. The Red Bare features Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles and an impressive 91:1 crawl ratio. A Fire Cracker red exterior colour is featured, highlighted by custom Matte Black graphics and gold accents for a unique look. The truck comes equipped with a JPP 2-in. lift kit, 37-in. BFG mud-terrain tires, cargo bed-mounted sport bar, factory steel bumpers with a Warn winch and JPP Sand Slider rock rails. Jeep Orange Peelz Last, and definitely not least, the Jeep Orange Peelz concept is based on a two-door Wrangler and pays tribute to open-air fun and freedom that have helped make the Jeep Wrangler an automotive icon. Mopar designers have removed the side and rear windows and installed prototype JPP half doors and custom removable one-piece Freedom Top glass sunroof. A JPP 2-in. lift kit with FOX shocks provides room for 17-in. JPP beadlock-capable wheels wrapped in 37in. BF Goodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires. The concept hood features custom black Mopar hood latches and Jeep Willys logo with 5-in. off-road LED lights mounted on either side at the base of the A-pillars. A custom JPP Rubicon steel bumper includes a 2-in. steel grille guard and exclusive JPP 8,000-lb. capacity Rubicon Warn winch. Under the hood is the 3.6L Pentastar V6 that makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.

AJAC Names Ram 1500 as 2021 ‘Best Full-size Pickup’ Volume 5, Issue No. 2 April / May 2021

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has named the Ram 1500 as “Best Fullsize Pickup Truck in Canada for 2021” beating out the Chevrolet Silverado and Nissan Titan to wear the crown. The “Best Full-Size Pickup” category is one of eight categories voted on by AJAC members, the winners of which are eligible to win the 2021 Canadian Car of the Year or 2021 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, which have also since been presented. For the second straight year, the Mazda3 is the 2021 Canadian Car of the Year, while Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year was the Genesis GV80. Due to the pandemic, the 2021 program was a bit different in that vehicles that are newly designed, refreshed or carried over from previous model years were considered if a minimum number of ballots were submitted by AJAC journalists. Usually the vehicle has to be all-new or significantly refreshed, but the decision was made to widen the field. For more information on the other category winners, or AJAC itself, visit www.ajac.ca.

Desert Racer The 2022 Ford Raptor Is Ready To Smash The Dunes

B

elieve it or not, the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor is actually the third generation of the manic off-road version of the Blue Oval’s massively-selling F-150 pickup. The vehicle that many thought could be a one-off has soldiered on all these years later, and it arrives for 2022 with more functionality than ever before. You want Apple CarPlay and Android Auto? They come as standard, along with four USB ports

Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of Ford Canada

to charge devices and available 18-speaker B&O sound. You want suspension robust enough to challenge the Baja 1000 off-road endurance test? Well, the redesigned Fox dampers should take care of that, no problem. What about the ability to, I don’t know, power a circulating saw? Well, like its F-150 Powerboost cousin, the Raptor will be made available with a Pro Power Onboard power generator. As you do, when it comes to a rock-crawling, desert-smashing sports truck.

Of course, all that high-techery is well and good, but what everybody wants to know is just how capable this thing is going to be in the off-road world. After all, as Raptor Program Manager Tony Greco says: “The idea of Raptor is rooted in desert racing. Trophy trucks are not only fast, they’re built for extreme use (and they) play a role in everything we do on the Raptor team. In the end, it’s about a vision that strives to push Raptor closer to trophy truck performance.” How does one get there? Well, much like the Pro Power unit, the Raptor also shares its fully-boxed frame with the F-150, but does get modifications such as taller shock towers, unique control arms, lower front axle for increased travel (helped by triple-rate 24-inch coil springs, the longest in class), stronger brackets for springs, dampers and so on, and even a Raptorspecific trailer hitch. The 15-inches of rear suspension travel is the best in class, as is the 14-inches of travel the front gets. The newly-designed Fox Live Valve shocks, meanwhile, are still of the nine-zone damping variety as they were previously, but can now read what’s going on beneath the truck and adjust damping rates faster than ever before, to the tune of 500 times per second. The dampers are also designed to work with the Raptor’s Terrain Management System’s seven drive modes: Slippery, Tow/Haul, Sport, Normal, Off-Road, Baja and Rock Crawl. Speaking of rock crawling: through the truck’s cruise control system, drivers can activate Trail One-Pedal Drive that allows them to focus on the steering and let computers handle the throttle and brakes when tackling more complex off-road trails. There’s also a front-facing camera to make the job easier still. The rear suspension also needed an overhaul in order to achieve the capabilities Ford was hoping to achieve. So, they designed a special five-link set-up with a Panhard bar for better axle stabilization and, as Greco puts it, it “dramatically improves traction, allowing more torque to be put to the wheels.” The overhaul was so complete that Greco maintains that the Raptor has never used this many unique parts, as that’s what was required in order to help the ’22 Raptor reach that elusive trophy truck status.

12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2021

Of course, more than just tuning the suspension, the wheels and tires needed to be seriously looked at as well, and Ford has found a way to provide 25 percent more wheel travel than the original truck, which has allowed them to fit optional 37-inch tires, which are the largest ever fit to a production truck of any kind. The Raptor also gets BFGoodrich T/A KO2 all-terrain tires as standard, which is probably a requirement for a truck like this, and so should surprise nobody. The larger tire allows for 13.1-inches of running ground clearance, a 33.1-degree approach angle, 24.9-degree departure angle and 24.4-degree breakover angle. It all combines to make this one capable truck. There’s also a full-size spare installed underneath the bed. Power-wise, performance figures have not yet been announced, but last year’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 returns, so we can expect at least 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, and likely more than that. It will be loud, too, thanks to a newly-designed “trombone loop” exhaust that also gets a “Quiet” mode, just like in a Mustang. Power will be fed to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission and an electronic locking rear differential, plus optional Torsen front limited-slip diff, with 4:10 final drive ratios. Payload and towing are both up by 200 pounds, and the Raptor will be available as a SuperCrew and only as a SuperCrew, with a 5.5-foot bed. So, while you do get that onboard generator, it’s unlikely many will be using a Raptor as a work truck. Unless you’re talking about the U.S. Border Patrol, which has used Raptors as patrol vehicles in the past…

styling, while “Code Orange” exterior paint will be a Raptor exclusive. Inside, there are more connections with the latest F-150, including the collapsible shift lever that, once stowed, allows for a massive, flat surface perfect for resting your Big Mac on…or your army rations. Whatever. When not eating those, meanwhile, you can store them in lockable rear underseat storage bins so they stay in place as you bounce over the dunes. The seats are more highly bolstered and covered in a carbon fibre-like weave that helps hold occupants in place as the going gets rough. There’s also leather in the high-traffic areas for better durability. If you want the full-pull performance experience, Recaro seats are also available but come finished just in a light-blue colourway to ensure it feels as unique as possible inside. Also unique to the Raptor is an overhead console, sports steering wheel and special graphics on the gauge cluster and infotainment display. When it goes on sale later this year, the Raptor will be available in three trims: Base, High Series and Accent Series. Pricing and power figures will be announced closer to launch.

Styling-wise, Ford has drawn inspiration from two sources, both sharing the “Raptor” namesake: everyone’s favourite dino from the original Jurassic Park (seriously; who could ever forget that kitchen scene?) and the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Certain body details such as functional air vents on the hood and front fenders are meant to look like something you’d see on the jet, as does a graphics package that provides alphanumeric coding styled to look like what a fighter squadron might use. Another graphics package comes paired with the 37-inch tire off-road package that’s styled to look like the livery you might see on a desert racer. Features like available Rigid fog lamps help round out the exterior APRIL/MAY 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 13

Diesel Option

The Jeep Gladiator now offers an EcoDiesel engine option Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Stellantis Canada

year after its introduction, the Jeep Gladiator pickup truck has added another powertrain to its options list. This is the third generation EcoDiesel. This V6 engine delivers increased torque and horsepower in the Gladiator, along with better fuel economy and reduced levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Adding the diesel to the lineup was always the plan – as explained by Jim Morrison, Head of the Jeep Brand for North America. “Before we introduced Gladiator, one of the most common questions consumers asked us was, ‘Will you please offer a Jeep truck?’ followed closely by, ‘Will it be offered with a diesel engine?’ While we know the answer to the first question, I’m pleased to answer the second with a resounding ‘Yes!’ “Gladiator’s combination of unmatched off-road capability and the vehicle’s funto-drive on-road performance, best-ever Gladiator fuel economy and incredible driving range underwrite the fact that our customers knew exactly what they were asking for.” Said Morrison. This new 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine is rated at 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, with engine stop-start (ESS) technology standard. It is available on Gladiator Sport, Overland and Rubicon models. To handle greater torque loads, the EcoDiesel V6 connects to a newly added TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission, calibrated for low-RPM shifts and the on- and off-road rigours of Jeep Gladiator duty. There are more than 40 individual shift maps to optimize shift points for fuel economy, performance and 4x4 capability. It’s also noteworthy that the new Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel Sport, Overland, and Rubicon models feature third-generaAPRIL/MAY 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 17

tion Dana 44 front and rear heavy-duty axles. Additionally, all Gladiator EcoDiesel models feature a 3.73 axle ratio. The Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio is standard on Rubicon models, and the Command-Trac part-time two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio comes in Sport and Overland models. Also, for 2021, the Jeep Wrangler four-door models will also offer the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine with ESS option. So, while the EcoDiesel has been around since 2014, this engine is now the third generation of the turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel and it differs in several significant ways from its predecessors. For instance: • A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine (VGT) and low-friction bearing increases efficiency. • Redesigned cylinder head intake ports with higher flow capability improve swirl and flow, increasing performance and fuel economy. • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system design has been updated to a dual loop (low and high pressure) system. The added low-pressure circulation system draws gases after the diesel particulate filter, thus minimizing turbocharger energy losses, which increases fuel economy. • The compression ratio has been optimized to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1 to improve fuel economy and reduce engine noise. • High-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were redesigned to match the newly designed and optimized combustion chamber, reducing fuel consumption. • Lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were completely redesigned to include thinner rings and low-friction diamond-like carbon coating on the pin and compression piston ring to reduce parasitic losses.

rods for strength and durability. The aluminum alloy pistons are cooled on the underside via oil jets. Heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads use individual bearing caps to reduce friction and minimize NVH. The chain-driven overhead camshafts employ roller-finger followers. • The engine’s turbo Charge Air Cooler (CAC) is located at the base of the grille, in front of the radiator, to maximize cooler temperatures. • A new 19.3-litre (4.3-gallon) diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank is located immediately behind the fuel tank with refill location next to the diesel fuel filler. DEF refills align with oil changes lasting up to 16,000 km (10,000 miles). Levels are monitored via a new DEF gauge in the front cluster.

• NVH has been improved by offsetting the piston pin 0.3 millimetres from the centreline.

The 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 engine is produced at the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy.

• The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a lightweight sandwiched polymer/metal material, which further reduces NVH. • The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 uses dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder and a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks. The block is cast with compacted graphite iron, which provides strength to dampen vibrations, but weighs less than gray cast iron. A compacted graphite iron bedplate adds rigidity to the block. • The engine uses a forged steel crankshaft and connecting APRIL/MAY 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 19

Going Upscale The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer

vacationers alike thanks to its rough-and-tumble drivetrain but also its leather-clad and fully-featured interior.

F

For over a decade, its gestation and evolution had it as a model unto itself, then a trim of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and then, just like that The Usual Suspects fans, it was gone. Jeep was going in a different direction and there just wasn’t room for it anymore.

or 2022, Jeep is going upscale – just not in so many words.

You may have heard of the Jeep Wagoneer of the ‘70s and ‘80s; very well-equipped and often wood-panelled, the Wagoneer and its Grand Wagoneer sibling were some of the first luxury SUVs and have since developed a bit of a cult following among surfers, hikers and winter

Obviously, they’ve seen the error of their ways, and for 2022, have given rebirth to the Wagoneer name, and in an effort to return it to that former glory, they’ve kind of made it a brand unto itself, a kind of luxury arm of Stellantis’ Jeep division. For now, though, the official line is that Wagoneer is becoming a “portfolio” of vehicles, counting two for the time being – the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. So would that be the Wagoneer Wagoneer and Wagoneer Grand Wagoneer, then? Wagoneer will essentially be picking up where Jeep left off; Jeep says that its products are currently doing a great job of servicing the compact and full-size segments, but they needed something to get them to the somewhat more ubiquitous “large SUV” segment – even though the three-row Grand Cherokee L debuted just a short while ago -- and that’s where the Wagoneer steps in. The Grand Wagoneer, meanwhile, competes in the premium SUV segment. Both are body-on-frame vehicles and the same size, but the Grand Wagoneer is the luxury model of the two; think Chevrolet Tahoe v Cadillac Escalade.

We spoke before about the LED lighting throughout the line-up, and in the case of the Grand Wagoneer, the “Liquid Chrome” brightwork on the badging looks like it would melt in your mouth. Speaking of “melting in one’s mouth”: both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer get a Nappa leather interior as standard, and generous applications of real wood inside do well to recall the original Wagoneer models. If you want even more suppleness, Series II and III trims get even more luxurious Palermo leather. It comes as no surprise that a heated steering wheel, 12-24-way power seats and heated front seats all come as standard. In another nod to its more luxurious digs, the Grand Wagoneer gets massage seats as standard. Both are body-on-frame vehicles and the same size, but the Grand Wagoneer is the luxury model of the two; think Chevrolet Tahoe v Cadillac Escalade. Both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer come with three-row seating for up to eight occupants, as well as best-in-class towing of 10,000 lbs. A look at the silhouette presented by both these rigs offers a strong presence, all squared-off edges and powerful lines that are reflected in the heavy-hitting front fascia with its purposeful bumper, Jeep-esque seven-slat grille and narrow but somewhat menacing headlights. Those are LEDs on both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, while the latter gets laser-cut grille rings for a sharper, more upmarket look. Both the Wagoneer ($69,995-$85,995) and Grand Wagoneer ($100,995-$120,995) will get Series I, II and III trims (channelling a little Land Rover there), while the Grand Wagoneer gets the Obsidian trim later in the year, which provides special wheels, badging, black onyx grille, exterior mirrors and heavy-duty McIntosh 1,375-watt audio inside.

Opulence is one thing, but these days in the premium luxury segment, you need the tech as well – have you seen the new Escalade? – and so the Wagoneer comes standard with a 10.1-inch central infotainment display, while the front passenger gets a display of their own, measuring 10.25 inches. The Grand Wagoneer, meanwhile, gets a 12-inch

Right; “on wheels.” While the in-cabin experience has obviously been paid a lot of attention, let’s not forget that at their cores, these models are an extension of the Jeep brand and so they need to be capable as well. Wagoneer has not gone so far as to grant renowned “Trail Rated” designation to either of these models – who knows? That may forever be a Jeep thing, and a Jeep thing only – but nevertheless, there are three 4x4 system choices: Quadra-Trac I and II, and Quadra-Drive II, as well as available four-corner air suspension. Each system comes equipped with certain features – available electronic limited slip diffs, mechanical diffs, variable drive settings – to best suit the lifestyles of the various buyers.

central display. Both models get an additional 10.25-inch display below the main item for access to your climate control and other comfort features. It should come as no surprise that the gauge cluster in both models is also digitized. And it doesn’t stop there in terms of digital displays. Second-row passengers can be entertained with the available twin 10.1-inch displays, while a 10.25-inch central display comes as standard. In case you were wondering, that’s up to 75 inches of total display area in the Grand Wagoneer, and 50 inches in the Wagoneer. And to think; in the original Wagoneer, even having FM radio was a big deal! Speaking of audio: the first of two available McIntosh systems is a custom-made one, so that the sound can best travel throughout the cabin. The speaker count sits at an impressive 19, while the amp required to power them gets 17 channels and 950 watts. Not enough for you? Then perhaps the 23-speaker, 1,375-watt amplifier option will be more to your liking. Forget room for seven or eight passengers; what we have here could be a concert hall on wheels!

Another big part of any Jeep or Wagoneer package, of course, is the powertrain and buyers will have the choice of two, both V8s: a 5.7-litre 48-volt hybrid option good for 392 horsepower and 404 pound-feet of torque, and a 6.4L unit good for 471 hp and 455 lb-ft. Both come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 48V mild hybrid provides 130 lb-ft of torque immediately upon throttle tip-in and helps with fuel economy. The 6.4L, meanwhile, can deactivate half the cylinders during low-load instances for better fuel economy. That’s all well and good, but it is surprising that Wagoneer has opted not to make use – for either truck -- of the plug-in hybrid technology that will soon be debuting on the Wrangler 4xe at launch. EV folks should have no fear, however; a chat with Jeep brass on the day these vehicles were launched revealed that a 4xe version is surely on the way but for now, good ol’ petrol power is what we have. Which, of course, is the case for pretty much all of Wagoneer’s competition from the likes of GM, Ford, Toyota and Infiniti as well as the German and British luxury brands, so Wagoneer is starting on a level playing field even without hybrid power. Either way, many have eagerly awaited the return of the Wagoneer name – including us – and we can’t wait to see in person what Stellantis has managed to do with it.

Off-Road School Bus

Readin,’ ritin’ and overlanding . . .

I

In 1953, Ward’s school bus sales totalled 2,000 units, producing a record $5 million in revenue. In March of 1957, Ward’s 170 assembly line workers commenced bus building operations at a new facility that boasted a 1,500-foot-long assembly line incorporating 14 resistance welders, 75 arc welders, an inert gas welder, and a multitude of body jigs and fixtures. Up to 45 bodies could be on the assembly line at any given time.

The body plate on this vehicle tells us it was made by Ward’s Body Works, a builder of specialty bus bodies that was located at 805 Harkrider St. in Conway, Arkansas. The plate carries the serial number 5123. Ward was the brainchild of David H. Ward, a welder and blacksmith who was born Sept. 1, 1904 and passed away on May 22, 1985.

The Power-Wagon school bus was probably used in a community where four-wheel drive would be needed to get kids to school safely. Such a bus would come in handy in a state like Wisconsin that can have snow on the ground from mid-fall to as late as April or even May. A fairly large number of Power-Wagon school buses pop up on cars-for-sale Websites such as Bring-A-Trailer and Facebook Marketplace, as well as auction sites like eBay. Ward wasn’t the only company that used Power-Wagon chassis.

Story and photos by John Gunnell f you wanted to learn about off-roading, you might have to go to a special school, right? And if that were the case, what could be a better way to get there than in a Dodge Power-Wagon school bus? The school bus featured here showed up at the Octoberfest in Appleton, Wis., a few years ago and we’re sure it’s a pretty rare piece of bus history.

In 1933, Ward did his first school bus work when he modified the roof of a wood-bodied school hack operated by Carl Brady. He developed a reputation for truck and bus body making and fixing. In 1936, he built his original all-steel coaches for the Hermitage and Greenbriar school districts. By 1939, his business was building school buses.

It appears that Power-Wagon school buses were also popular in West-

Ward’s business increased and it moved to the 10,000 sq ft. facility in Conway. Military contracts for truck bodies—as well as troop-carrying buses--kept Ward going strong during World War II. The company also built bodies for Deuce-and-a-Quarter GMC 6x6 Army trucks. The military models included the M7A1 and M7A2 mobile small arms repair shop bodies and M30 and M31 general repair truck bodies for the Signal Corps. Ward’s Arkansas facility grew to 100 employees and made $1,600,000 worth of buses in 1948. Ward also opened a plant in Mexico. Problems there and an expanding Central and South American market resulted in the construction of a new plant in Austin, Texas in 1950. Ward fabricated all-metal school bus bodies at its Texas plant and installed them on a variety of chassis. Ward himself continued to live in Arkansas and the Conway plant continued its operations for school bus markets in the North and East. 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2021

ern parts of the United States, especially in Colorado where rough, mountainous terrain and significant snowfalls are common. Several ‘for sale’ ads on the online sites mentioned that PowerWagon school buses being offered for sale had been used on Indian reservations. Ward continued to experiment with ways to improve bus safety, and in 1969, published some recommendations based on crash tests and a survey of the exact placement The high-back driver’s seat and quantity of rivets looks more up-to-date than in its competitor’s bus the Power-Wagon. bodies. The study found that inconsistencies in the manufacturing process had a direct effect on joint quality. Ward made recommendations to various government agencies and industry trade groups that eventually led up to the passage of national school bus safety standards in the mid-1970s. Ward also introduced computer-aided manufacturing to the school bus business by installing an early IBM System/360 main-frame computer in the Conway plant in the mid-1960s. Following David Ward’s retirement in 1968, his eldest son, Charles—who had worked there--took over as president. His father remained chairman of the board. In January of 1970, Ward purchased the assets of Coachette, a small Dallas, Texas maker of Type B buses that Carl Graham started in 1954. He had been a sales manager for Ford and Marmon-Herrington buses. Originally based on a 172-inch wheelbase Ford truck chassis,

the 23-passenger minis featured coachwork from Ward’s Austin plant. Chevy/GMC chassis were new in 1958, plus a 37-passenger Coachette. The small buses never sold a lot outside Texas. Only 330 Coachettes were made from 1953 to 1969. Production ended partly because Ward closed its plant in Austin. By 1973, Ward controlled 25 percent of the U.S. school bus market. To keep its standing, further expansion was required. The company was recapitalized and reorganized as Ward School Bus Manufacturing, Inc. In 1976, Ward built a front-wheel drive prototype school bus using a modified International school bus chassis. Power-Wagon name is By the late 1970s, prominent on the hood sides. most boomers had completed secondary education. This reduced the number of new school buses needed. U.S. school bus builders, who had already been reduced from 20 to six during the previous 20 years, were forced to cut production again to stay in business. Already-slim profit margins were further reduced. On July 18, 1980, the Wards closed operations, putting 1,100 workers out of work. A week later, the family filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Charles Baker presided over the case. If there is such a thing as “classic” school buses, many probably have the Ward name on them. The Ward’s Power-Wagon school bus at Appleton’s “License to Cruise” show had a bucket driver’s seat up front and eight two-passenger seats inside. The driver’s seat looked more modern than the bus. It had cloth and vinyl upholstery. The eight passenger seats were all-vinyl bench seats. All seats were tan. The bus was Chrome Yellow with a white roof. It had “Power-Wagon” on the hood sides. The Dodge name was on the front of the radiator. We don’t know how many of these Ward made.
