Jeep Unveils Xtreme Recon Package for Wrangler at Chicago Auto Show
A
t the recent 2021 Chicago Auto Show, Jeep introduced two updates to the 2021 Wrangler including the new Xtreme Recon Package with 35-in. tires and Sunrider Flip Top for Hardtop. “As an icon built around 80 years of unmatched 4x4 capability, the Wrangler has always pushed the limit of what a Jeep can do off-road, and the new Xtreme Recon Package with 35-inch tires straight from the factory pushes that limit even further,” said Jim Morrison, Vice President, Jeep Brand North America. “While the Xtreme Recon Package sets the benchmark for 4x4 capability, the easy-to-use Sunrider Flip Top for Hardtop fortifies Wrangler’s open-air spirit.” The Xtreme Recon Package costs $4,995 and includes the aforementioned BFG K02 All-Terrain 35-in. tires, 17x8-in. beadlock capable wheels, swing gate reinforcement, 4.56:1 axle ratio and a 1.5-in. factory suspension lift with uniquely tuned shocks. This results in a best-in-class approach angle, departure angle, ground clearance and water fording capability. The Sunrider Flip Top for Hardtop is now available on all Wrangler models and offers a front-row soft top that quickly and easily flips back for an enhanced open-air driving experience. Also new is a 4.88:1 axle ratio for the 2021 Wrangler Rubicon that, when paired with the six-speed manual transmission, delivers a best-in-class 100:1 crawl ratio for increased wheel torque and control when navigating off-road obstacles. Chevrolet Confirms Addition of ZR2 to Silverado Lineup Chevrolet has officially confirmed the future expansion of the brand’s ZR2 trim, which relaunched on the Colorado mid-size pickup in 2017 and adds significant high-performance capability with a wide variety of drive settings both on and off the road. Not much information was shown by Chevrolet other than the ZR2 badge shown here and a quick video clip of a truck taking on some serious muddy terrain. It will be interesting to see how far Chevrolet goes with a potential off-road model following the success of the big, brash Ford F-150 Raptor and the more recent Ram 1500 TRX. Chevrolet says to tune in this fall regarding this future edition.

The Toyota Tundra is finally getting a redesign as Toyota has been teasing as of late and this time went as far as to release a photo. The truck features a much exaggerated, bold front end design with a very large grille and an overall good look. Earlier this summer the beans were spilled on the Tundra’s new engine, which is dubbed the iForce MAX and is said to be a twin-turbocharged V6 that will generate nearly 400 horsepower. A second teaser

The Next Step Jeep adds to its already legendary capability with the Wrangler 4xe PHEV
he Jeep Wrangler is an icon. There’s pretty much no denying it. Cultural icon, military icon, movie icon, offT road icon – you name it, the Wrangler (or its CJ, Willys, TJ and so on forebears) has earned that label. There are few more recognizable in the world than that. What started out as a General Purpose vehicle (“GP”, or “Jeep,” as some historians have claimed) has become a vehicle loved and cherished by a massive swath of people. You have your hard-core Jeep people – you know, the type that have hooks mounted on the walls of their garage in order to easily store the Wrangler’s removable doors – and you have surfers as well as off-roaders as well as Clueless-spec valley girls all loving their Jeeps.
Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of Stellantis
Heck, now that they’ve brought back a pickup version in the form of the Gladiator, there’s even one that could work – albeit not quite as well as a more traditional pickup – for the neighbourhood handyman. All that being said, though, there is a section of the market that the Jeep Wrangler hasn’t quite cracked. And that’s a problem, because it’s a sector that’s becoming more and prominent in the car world today, thanks in no small part to governments the world over making it so: that of the hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). These are the kinds of vehicle pretty much every manufacturer has promised to be focused on – solely focused on – as early as 2025 because they’re being told that they have to, and Jeep’s no different.
So what we have here – the Wrangler 4xe (“four-by-e”) is the brand’s first foray into this sphere. Of the three vehicle types mentioned above, the 4xe is of the plug-in hybrid ilk. That means that it gets a gas engine – in this case, a turbocharged two-litre – as well as an EV motor for propulsion. What makes it so attractive is that it can run on full electric power for a claimed 45 km, although I only managed about 38 during my various tests of the tech. But more on that later. The 4xe uses its combined power sources to make 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, fed to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission – just like its V6 and four-cylinder siblings – to all four wheels and, in Rubicon form, gets all manner of off-road tech such as Dana axles, locking mechanical differential and disconnecting sway bar – just like its V6 and four-cylinder siblings. To be frank, even looking at it proves a hard separation from its more traditional kin; the main giveaway are all the little blue bits you see sprinkled all over the exterior. You’ve got blue winch mounts, blue outlines ‘round the “Rubicon” hood decals, a blue “Trail Rated” badge and those nifty graphics on the hood. Other than that, though, there really isn’t much to give it away.
Which, if we’re honest, is probably a pretty good thing as Jeep would be loathe to change the styling of such a popular and classic vehicle too much, lest they upset the legions of loyal fans they have, and newfangled powertrain or not, it was always going to be instantly recognizable as a Wrangler. According to chief designer Mark Allen, this was a crucial part of the story – making sure this PHEV Jeep was still a Jeep. “As long as I’m here, we’re going to have a seven-slot grille,” he said. “I don’t really care where the power comes from, as long as it goes to all four wheels.” Which, of course, it does, and thanks to the instant hit of torque you get with the EV motor, it actually adds to the off-road performance. It’s not window dressing, either; Jeep took one of these on the famous Rubicon Trail off-road course and managed to complete the 35-km jaunt all on EV power. To keep the Wrangler 4xe capable, they’ve installed the EV motor between the engine and transmission and put the battery underneath the rear seats and wrapped in an aluminum cage. That way, it doesn’t have to sit in the floor – where it often does in PHEVs – which would likely
12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
able distance away, you could spend your entire week in EV mode. And, uncharacteristically for a Wrangler, you’d be doing it in a fairly relaxed manner as there’s no powertrain noise. You’ll still have wind noise and the gentle-sometimes-not-so-gentle hum of the tires on the pavement below, but this 4xe has done for the Wrangler what I never thought possible – not only has it modernized it, it’s cultured it. Sure, in Rubicon form, it’s still rough on the highway and there’s no doubt it’s an ultra off-road Wrangler with the ride to match but that’s to be expected, really. Plus, you can also get the 4xe powertrain in the softer Sahara version. Which could be the better fit for the 4xe just because it’s got a little more mass-market appeal. Which was the real takeaway for me from this test. More than just helping its off-road chops, there’s just something about adding an electrified powertrain that makes it a more accessible vehicle for more people. mean a sacrifice to the ground clearance that the 4xe – especially in Rubicon form – needs. So instead of losing ground clearance, you lose a bit of storage below the seats. That’s it. That’s it and that’s all well and good, but as is the case with many PHEVs I test, what I wanted to find out with the 4xe was just how easily everything could be tweaked or modified to get the most out of the powertrain. Which is something I didn’t have to try too hard to figure out because Jeep has made it so darn easy. Just above the driver’s left knee sit three buttons marked “hybrid,” “electric” and “e-save.” The first one makes use of everything the powertrain has to offer for forward progress, the second setting is for EV-only driving – that’s what I used in the city during my 38-km run – while the third acts as a hybrid setting, but never allows your battery charge level to drop below what it was at when you first pressed the button. It will also charge the battery as you drive, all the way up to 85 per cent of its capacity. In addition to that, there’s a button marked with a battery on the centre stack. What it does is allow for full-regen mode, meaning the EV motor runs backwards when you release the throttle to regen as much power as possible. Unfortunately, it isn’t a full one-pedal driving affair as no matter where I tried it – uphill, downhill, flat, in space, under water – it never stopped fully until I went to the brake. It does help with power regen, although I didn’t notice a huge difference in my overall range when I used it, and when I didn’t. Of course, being a PHEV, all this might be considered moot if you can plug in at the end of the day; do that, and assuming you work a reason-
People, perhaps, who always wanted a Wrangler but couldn’t really justify its somewhat un-efficient attitude or something along those lines, could be swayed. Even my truck’s optional auto-retracting sunroof (a pretty penny at $3,995) which flies in the face of Wranglers of old which you need blueprints and a master’s in engineering to solve, is a good way to make this Wrangler that much more livable. I know I’d opt for it, even if the Jeep purists will scoff. This is the thing, really; I have no reason to believe that the Jeep purists won’t love this as any other Wrangler, but in addition to that, there could be a whole new customer base it appeals to. Judging by the success of other Jeep models that are already using the 4xe powertrain in other markets, that seems like a darn good bet.

Go-Anywhere 4x4
The Land Rover Defender X P400 SE Story and photos by Gerry Frechette
I
t has be tough for a manufacturer these days to bring back a model that was so respected for its capabilities back in the day. A quarter century or so has passed since Land Rover last sold the Defender in North America, which was launched right after World War II as Britain’s go-anywhere 4x4. Why so tough? Because fans of the brand, and they are legion, would expect nothing less than the same sort of ruggedness and off-road prowess as the first 50 years of Defenders had. But much has changed in the auto business in the past couple of decades, and people want it all – luxury, comfort, style, performance....you get the picture. So, the new Defender would have to be many things in one package, the basis of which is an all-aluminum monocoque chassis; the bodyon-frame concept of the original just would not allow the kind of onroad performance that is expected these days. What does allow such a vehicle to be all things to all people is technology, and lots of it. To be one of the best off-roaders in the world takes a very advanced all-wheel drive system that distributes torque to the axle that needs it the most, with the optional Electronic Active Differential that sends torque side-to-side at the rear, a feature that makes Defender that much more capable. A two-speed transfer case does its usual thing for torque multiplication, and Land Rover’s latest Terrain Response System lets the driver choose the driveline settings based on the terrain encountered. The off-road settings include Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, Wade, and Configurable. If there isn’t something there that covers where you are, then you are on the moon. In our brief off-road time with Defender in sand and dirt, we were able to find the AUG/SEPT 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 17
settings, but not how to engage them, so they were not intuitive, at least not to this driver. Luckily, there is an Auto setting, which is said to figure it all out in the computer. There is more. Raise the air suspension to the max, and you get almost 30 cm of ground clearance. Some of that ground might be submerged, so select Wade and go for it, confident that all the important electrical bits underneath have been sealed up for protection. The Defender will handle up to 90 cm (3 feet!) of water, but at that level, you’ll probably hope that you are not in a fast-moving river! Eventually, most Defender drivers will need to hit paved roads to head home, and in that environment, it does well, too. The aforementioned air suspension combines with adaptive shock absorbers to deliver a smooth, even nimble ride for such a big vehicle. You can lower the suspension to below Normal level, to aid in entry and egress from the vehicle, and to smooth out the aero at speed. The standard engine in Defender is a 2.0-litre turbo-4, which reportedly delivers an adequate level of power (296 hp), but the engine to have is the 3.0-litre straight six (395 hp) that our tester had. Of interest is that it is both supercharged and turbocharged, and also has a 48-v motor-generator that harvests energy normally lost during deceleration and redeploys it to optimize performance. The supercharger is electric, not engine-driven like most of them, and takes care of lowRPM torque, until the turbo spools up and handles the higher engine speeds. It feels quick and responsive, and by the numbers, it is, with zero-to-100 km/h runs of 6.1 seconds, plenty quick for a 2,300-kg SUV, aided and abetted by the 8-speed transmission. Since we drove the Defender, Land Rover has added a V8 to the model line-up, for those who just must have one. To get the six, one must have ordered at least the XS model, one up from the base model that only comes with the four. The model mix is somewhat bewildering in terms of what model gets what feature, but our X model tester was the top six-powered one, before you hit the V8. To get the air suspension, adaptive shocks and electronic differential, you need to get the X. Unfortunately, no model comes with the diesel, available elsewhere in the world.
18 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
While the exterior is somewhat as you’d expect, a traditional boxy design in tune with the Defender’s heritage, it is the interior where Land Rover’s designers really went to town. The look is premium and a bit old-school utilitarian at the same time, with exposed bolts in the door panels, for example. Most of it, though, looks like somewhere you’d like to spend a lot of time, the seats being trimmed in Ebony Windsor leather and what LR calls Steelcut fabric, which means very durable and technical-looking. The 12.3-inch interactive driving display is one of the more clear and responsive on the market, although the menu system on it is one of the more unique and takes some learning to use. Said seats have plenty of support in all the spots you would want, and there is lots of room in all directions. The same goes for the second row, but not so much for the optional third row, with which our tester was equipped (for $2,600.) There is very little room back there for adults, and even less room behind it for cargo. Said cargo space is, of course, accessible by a tailgate, with hinges on the right side. Which means, it opens from the left, not so great for access when you are parked on the right side of a street. There are a couple of options for the front seat area; you can remove the entire console and install a jump seat (for $950) that makes it three-across seating, or get a refrigerated centre console (for $800). Indeed, there are hundreds of options for personalization of the Defender; you can even buy jumper cables for $295. The Defender X we drove starts at $99,900 and of course goes up quickly from there if you start checking lots of options boxes. But you can get into a nicely equipped base four cylinder model for $65,500, a level to which some non-luxury off-road brands have risen. Is this a worthy successor to the original-style Defender? We would say that Land Rover has done a great job of maintaining its style and off-road prowess, while incorporating all the modern technology and on-road comfort that people expect these days.

Bucking Horse 2021 Ford Bronco Sport
Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of Ford Canada
T
hings don’t always go to plan; even if you’re one of the largest auto makers in the world. After many months of production delays, Ford’s long-anticipated full-size Bronco is beginning to appear on dealer lots. There are hopes that this late entry will give the Jeep Wrangler a run for its money, but Ford isn’t about to leave the rest of the off-road market untouched. A few months ago, a compact, economical little brother also appeared on the scene. The Bronco Sport is part of Ford’s efforts to create a Bronco brand that appeals
to outdoor enthusiasts, even those with more modest budgets and less of an off-road appetite. Does that mean this compact adventurer could break through as a viable light-duty overland platform? Small crossovers are largely overlooked when it comes to off-road and overland travel, but this trend appears to be changing. Automakers are now paying attention to buyers who desire a car-like driving experience on pavement as much as they need a weekend getaway vehicle that is confident and capable on gravel roads and loose terrain. Both Subaru and Toyota have stepped up with factory made gravel-ready versions of their Impreza and RAV-4 models, both of which already have excellent aftermarket support for adventure touring. Bronco Sport shares some of its platform with the Ford Escape but ends up with a lot more cargo space thanks to a boxy design inspired by Broncos of years gone by. The spacious load area is more than enough for a week’s worth of camping supplies, and the pop-open rear window makes accessing a fridge or cooler that much easier. Fold down the rear seats, which sport permanently installed wear mats, and the Sport reveals itself as a very versatile hauler. Overall, the cabin is very spacious and on long off-road trips you might find it pleasantly comfortable, a factor that reduces fatigue significantly. Adding to the adventure-ready theme, MOLLE straps and plenty of pockets offer lots of places for your stuff. One factor that sets the Sport apart from its larger 4x4 counterparts is its economical

from available advanced assistance features, such as radar cruise control, automatic lane keeping, and collision avoidance. Together these systems almost make the Bronco Sport ‘self driving’ save for the required periodic handling of the steering wheel. Even with every option ticked, the Bronco Sport still comes in at around the cost of a modestly optioned full-size Bronco – there’s a lot of value here. Unlike its big brother, the Bronco Sport doesn’t come equipped with any kind of serious recovery points or protective armour. This isn’t necessarily a problem, because Ford assumes you won’t be driving on much more than the aforementioned gravel roads. That said,
engine choices. The standard 1.5L turbocharged EcoBoost is a three-cylinder power plant, and while this might have you raising an eyebrow, keep in mind that it still boasts 180 horsepower. With fuel prices rising consistently, an economical off-roader with plenty of range makes perfect sense – especially for long distance overland travel. If that doesn’t sound like enough grunt, the top-end Badlands trim (which also sports a type of locking rear differential) comes equipped with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine, and doesn’t perform that much worse when it comes to consumption. For those longer trips, there’s a few points to consider for that purpose – thoughts for any 4x4, let alone a crossover intended mostly for city driving. The off-road oriented Badlands trim level of the Bronco Sport may come wearing decent rubber, but you’d likely want to invest in a set of tougher off-road tires. These more durable tires will take the abuse of gravel roads, allow you to air down for comfort without worrying about a broken tire bead, and most importantly they offer improved traction. Long drives will benefit
22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
it’s expected that the aftermarket will offer basic off-road upgrades for those who want to take their Bronco Sport to the extreme. In fact, there are already comprehensive roof rack systems available, allowing owners to mount shovels, recovery boards, and cargo just like full-size 4x4s can. Ford is also hoping you won’t get stuck in the first place thanks to their off-road terrain management system called “G.O.A.T.,” which offers programs for sand, mud and other types of rough road. While it is essentially just a selectable traction
control system, it’s still better than nothing and more than other manufacturers offer on their compact crossovers. Towing capacity doesn’t usually come to mind in a compact off-roader, given the small engines and even smaller chassis, but the Bronco Sport is indeed capable of hauling up to 2,200 lbs when equipped with the largest engine. This means a small overland trailer would be easy to lug around – some weigh in at under 1,000 lbs before payload, leaving you with space to store your gear and an appealing way to travel the backroads of Canada. Last year, Ford showed off a Bronco Sport concept that came equipped with steel-look aluminum wheels, and a full size RZR side-by-side in tow. This might seem silly to truck owners, but it’s becoming more common – especially with the price of trucks and the fuel that powers them climbing at a remarkable pace.
ICE COLD ANYWHERE
Though the Bronco brand consists of just two vehicles, we can only assume this will change in the coming years. Take a look at a Bronco or Bronco Sport and you won’t see a Ford logo
anywhere prominent – the bucking horse is being pushed as a full-on lifestyle brand, so it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the addition of a more luxurious Bronco to take on the likes of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Lexus GX. The Bronco Sport platform is also being utilized for the upcoming Ford Maverick mini-pickup. This segment could be the next ‘big’ thing, with many city dwellers desiring an economical vehicle but still needing a way to haul stuff from time to time. The Maverick’s hybrid powerplant makes it the most fuel-efficient truck ever built, and the cheapest hybrid for sale in North America. Pickups have been a long-time favourite of off-roaders – a bed is just that much more useful than trunk space, and opens up all kinds of possibilities for mounting tents and other accessories. With the apparent success of the Bronco Sport, a growing compact overland scene, and an off-road market that loves pickup trucks, the Maverick could be the next big thing in overland travel – and how lucky would we be to see an off-road oriented, Bronco-branded version of the Maverick? Only time will tell!

RV-ING: TAXA MANTIS
Go Overlanding!
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the TAXA Outdoors
T
here is a relatively new niche emerging in the world of RVing. It’s called Overlanding. Have you heard of Overlanding? If you have, it probably puts you into one of two camps. Interested in this camping concept – or not interested at all. So, what is it? Well, most RVers are aware of the terms boondocking and/or dry camping. These monikers describe setting up camp without services. No electric, no water, no cable or any other amenities you may find in
an organized government (or private) park. But Overlanding, while a form of dry camping, is in fact taking the off-grid, out-of-the-park description one step further. That is the point of Overlanding. Those who choose to Overland want to go where most don’t; they don’t dry camp because they happened to get caught between organized campsites one night. These folks are not concerned with comfort stations, hydro hookups, pools and shuffleboard courts. They want to get away – really get away. If this image of Overlanding appeals to you, then be thankful you live in Canada. We are blessed with so much easily accessible outdoors space that the pursuit of Overlanding virtually puts the whole country at your disposal. Now, Overlanding (most likely) started with rooftop tents on 4WD trucks/SUVs. I know I’d seen many versions of these, particularly in Africa at least a decade ago. Then I saw them in the western United States. I even attended an Overlanding expo in Northern California some years ago. Now this rooftop tent trend has been augmented with the purpose-built Overlanding trailer. A company called TAXA recently sent us a news release showing off its newest Overlanding trailer, the Mantis. Reviewing that company’s website is what led to this discussion on Overlanding. TAXA’s website says they build trailers with everything you need – and nothing you don’t. Looking at the Mantis, this statement proves true, I think. This is a 19-foot trailer that has space for four as well as a design that accommodates pets and adventure
24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
toys. Low roof access height is offset with a pop-up fabric tent-roof that is also optimal for ventilation when setup. The Mantis features 20 gallons of fresh water, a wet bath with cassette toilet, two-burner stove and a separate sink. But the key to an Overlanding trailer is two-fold – low overall weight and high ride height. Mantis has a dry weight of just 2,972 lb. It also features a ground clearance of 14-inches. That’s more than most factory-built trucks and SUVS. This trailer also has a Timbren axle-less suspension (think four-corner independent automotive suspension). By eliminating the full width of the axle, this trailer is much less likely to get hung up on rough terrain. It also rides on Cooper Discoverer AT3
16-inch tires. These are rated for both on and off-road use. Another unique feature is a Lock ‘N’ Roll hitch. This articulating hitch has 360 degrees of rotation and 3-axis movement. It gives you rough trail access as it won’t bind up when towed over uneven ground - you can’t do that with a standard ball hitch. Inside, the Mantis is all about using every available inch of space and having design features that often serve more than one purpose. For instance, the open shelves are designed to accept milk crates. These stow securely yet can be removed to pack and unpack. Other spaces transform – the dinette drops down to be a bunk or couch. Ceiling-mounted bunks can also be opened for use and stowed flat when not in use. There is even a mounting hookup for an indoor hammock for sleeping. Still not enough sleeping space? Mantis has a separate optional rooftop tent available. This Mantis builds on the features of TAXA’s smaller trailers by offering more livable accessories that make long-haul trips more comfortable. The 12V electrical system runs most everything. A wet bath with shower and cassette toilet is a step above hiking down to the creek, while A/C and a furnace take the edge off both hot and cold weather. There is even a hot water tank. So, while the Mantis is the largest and newest of TAXA’s trailers, they also build seven models in all. The others are smaller – with descriptive names like Cricket and Woolly Bear. Its website is worth a look – if for no other reason than to really see what an Overlanding RV is. www.taxaoutdoors.com
