FRESH TRACKS

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Will Increase Off-Road Performance

T

he 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will see an increase in off-road performance with an all-new taller suspension lift of 28mm up front and 13mm at the rear. It will still employ TRD-tuned FOX internal bypass shocks that are designed to perform both on- and off-road, and the increased lift will improve obstacle clearance thanks to its 36.4-degree approach angle, 24.7-degree departure angle and a 26.6-degree breakover angle. Complementing the increased front lift will be new TRD-engineered upper control arms that feature machine-forged aluminum construction for added strength and will allow the FOX shocks to make use of the additional rebound stroke afforded by the lift by adjusting the angle of the ball-joint mount. Also new for 2022 are new black TRD wheels that offer a wider track than stock and are fitted with new Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires that feature an aggressive sidewall design. A new exclusive Electric Lime Metallic is now added to the mix of existing colours, and new hood graphics complement the blacked out hood scoop. TRD Pro will also feature a colour-keyed rear bumper, door handles and power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators. New TRD Pro stamping on the rear quarter panel of the truck provides more breathing room between “TRD” and “Pro,” with a new “Tacoma” badge added to the front door, all of which will be finished in black. The TRD Pro model is based on the Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 Double Cab short bed model and is still available with a 6-speed manual transmission or the 6-speed auto. Ford Bronco Off-Roadeo School Opening in Texas In late June, Ford will open a first-of-its kind Bronco Off-Roadeo experience centre in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, near Austin. At this school, Bronco and Bronco Sport owners and order-holders can receive complimentary instruction on how to take their SUV off-road. Each Bronco Off-Roadeo experience will take the participant across 50 miles of curated trails over a day and a half while also teaching them about the capabilities and performance of their all-new Bronco. Three more Off-Roadeo centres are set to open later this year in Mt. Potosi, Nevada; Moab, Utah; and the Northeast USA. Each location will feature off-road courses designed with the assistance of some legendary names including professional driver/racer Vaughn Gittin Jr., King of the Hammers champion Loren Healy and off-road experiential manager Bob Burns. The first centre in Horseshoe Bay will feature stunning sunsets and rugged ranches complete with wild broncos. Owners are able to leave their own personal vehicles at home when visiting a location and will be provided with a model similar to their own. Hopefully the borders and travel will open up soon and some early Bronco-owning Canadians can make the trip South. For more information please go to www.Broncooffroadeo.com.

more notable examples include the available Terrain Mode, part of the GMC Hummer EV’s Drive Mode Control, which will offer two braking calibrations, with a mild braking option for two-foot driving and a purpose designed One-Pedal Driving control in low-speed off-road driving. This technology enables the driver to accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator pedal which uses unique calibrations for speed-limited off-road driving to help better negotiate steep grades and rock crawling. Available Extract Mode enables Adaptive Air Suspension height to be raised approximately 6-in. in order to take on extreme off-road situations such as large boulders or water forging. Ford Unveils Off-Road Capable Explorer Timberline

Superlift --------------------- 2

Ford has recently introduced the new Explorer Timberline model which it says is the most off-road capable Explorer ever and joins a growing list of off-road capable vehicles. The Explorer Timberline features Ford’s intelligent four-wheel drive and a Torsen limited-slip rear differential which automatically sends torque to the wheel with the best traction and prevents the other wheel from spinning. A standard Terrain Management System features seven drive modes, while the standard Hill Descent Control allows the Timberline to maintain a constant speed, allowing drivers to focus on steering down uneven descents. Ride height is raised 0.8-in. thanks to off-road capable shocks, while underneath is protected by standard steel skid plates. The SUV sits on high-sidewall all-terrain tires and offers much better approach and departure angles than the regular Explorer. Under the hood will be Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque, paired to a 10-speed auto. The exterior of the Explorer Timberline is highlighted by the available Forged Green Metallic exterior colour that makes the blackout treatment found on all models really stand out. The dark Carbonized Gray grille has provisions already incorporated along with a wiring harness for Ford Performance auxiliary lights. Inside features a Deep Cypress coloured interior trim with standard rubber floor liners to help keep carpet clean during off-road adventures.

faces or when cornering. Although it is meant to improve on-road characteristics, the TRD Sport model still features part-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case and an ample 9.6-in. of ground clearance. It is built on the SR5 grade but swaps the 17-in. wheels for new machine-faced 20-in. wheels with Dark Grey accents. New unique styling accents are found on the grille, rocker panels and body molding with a new signature TRD-style hood scoop added along with a front spoiler and black roof rails. Inside features SofTex-trimmed seats with unique gray contrast stitching and TRD stitched logos in the head restraints. The 4Runner TRD Sport comes standard with an 8-in. multimedia touchscreen display that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, Bluetooth and advanced voice recognition. Big things are expected from the all-new Ford Bronco Sport Story and photos by Dan Heyman, additional photos courtesy of Ford Canada

I

will be the first to admit: when I attended the launch (virtually, of course) of the latest Ford Bronco, and the Blue Oval also brought along a bit of a surprise in the form of the Bronco Sport, I was a mite confused. I knew that a new Bronco was coming, that it was going to be a proper truck-based (in this case, the Ranger pickup) body-on-frame four-wheeler, and all the retro styling and all that, but what was this crossover-based (in this case, the Escape) “Sport” all about? This wasn’t the vehicle I was expecting. Turns out, I wasn’t the only one; during my eventual week-long test of the Bronco Sport, I had many neighbours I chat with regularly about the vehicles I bring home come to me, eyebrows raised, with the same questions I was asking myself at the launch. Here’s the thing, though; while the Bronco Sport is a different vehicle than the yet-to-arrive-due-to-a-computer-chip-shortage-or-something at the time of writing, it still has styling cues of the older model, it shares many of the model names with the “other” Bronco and it is by no means a shrinking violet. Indeed, it looks the part to the point that while my neighbours were asking questions about it, they still knew it was a Bronco. Of course, much of that probably has to do with the fact it says “BRONCO” in giant scripting right across the grille and tailgate there, but that’s just the start of it. Although the original Bronco’s headlights were housed separately from the turn signals and the Bronco Sport has them both in the same housing, the look is definitely there, especially when the turn signals 10 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021

alight. The stance and overall proportions are very Bronco II (even though the Sport is a five-door and the II was a three-door) and inside, the gauge cluster has some old-school flare to it. It’s not all about looks, either, as there’s some proper functionality when it comes to the design. Take the roofline, for example. It’s hard to tell unless you really look for it, but the roof takes a slight “step” up just aft of the B-pillars. It’s hidden a little by the roof rails (that could be somewhat purposeful on Ford’s part) but it’s there to provide more headroom in the rear seats. Which, at 1,059 mm (with sunroof) is generous and more than you’ll get in the Escape even though the Sport rides higher. The rear door opening is a little snug, though, so while sitting back there is fine, stepping in takes some care for larger individuals such as myself. In short, it’s a darn cool-looking thing, this Bronco Sport, especially in Badlands form which provides those great dark wheels, contrastcolour roof and day-glo orange “Badlands” logo on the flanks. When I first saw it presented alongside the bigger Broncos, I thought it looked soft no matter how many shots were included of it splashing through rivers or carving up wooded trails. After seeing it in person, though, I think it looks distinctive, it looks tough enough and yeah, it looks cool enough even though we all know that the full-size Bronco is going to have “king of cool” laudations all over it. Inside, though, apart from the gauges and a few Easter Eggs (and I guess you could make an argument for the two-tone black/saddle

brown leather on my tester), there really isn’t very much “retro” about the Bronco Sport at all. It’s got a big 10-inch infotainment display with Ford’s SYNC3 interface, Bang & Olufsen audio, dial-style shift selector, wireless charging and USB-C and USB-A ports; even the gauge cluster isn’t fully exempt from new tech as it gets a great big TFT display in between that display’s all sorts of neat-o graphics. Indeed, the light show starts as soon as you step inside, with the infotainment display alighting with a cool graphic involving an avalanche of rocks combining to form the bucking-horse Bronco logo. Which, it should be said, has almost as much of a presence here as the famous horse logo does on the Mustang. That intro movie, by the way, is one

JuNE/JULY 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 11

of those Easter Eggs; there are also some cool Bronco graphics on the rear window that you can see through the rear-view mirror.

up to reveal more storage for wet items, as indicated by little graphics stamped thereon.

But it would be unfair to just discuss the stylistic aspects of the Bronco Sport’s interior, as it’s functional, as well.

That ingenuity extends to the rear cargo area which is chock-full of neat little details. You’ve got your tailgate divider that essentially provides two levels of storage – which will make much more sense in just a minute, if you’ll read on. There are little clips along each side so you can harness your wares and if you want to have a quick bite to eat (or work on some of your gear), a portion of the divider can be used as a deployable table with legs and all. Bit of an Easter Egg there, and there’s another one back there in the form of a bottle opener mounted to the wall of the

In addition to the rear seat room, there are a rows of loops affixed to the front seatback to which you can fasten gear, and there are zippered pockets there as well that have a waterproof lining. Not sure about said lining’s fluorescent orange colouring, though – I guess it matches the Badlands logos? I dunno. After that, the right-rear seat can be flipped

12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021

rear cargo area. Yes, you read that correctly. An honest-to-God bottle opener. Oh, and swiveling lights mounted into the tailgate so you can make yourself even more at home back there. The dual-tier cargo area is important because the tailgate actually opens two ways: you can either open the entire gate, or just the rear window and if you do the latter, it’s nice to be able to just slide items through there and on to the raised “shelf” created by the tonneau cover below. Smart stuff.

Which you shouldn’t scoff at, because the Bronco Sport, with its independent rear axle and locking differential, is imminently capable of light or even moderate off-roading. I took it on some of the former and it was a revelation there, maintaining composure as the undulations became more repetitive and the surface that much looser – I selected

Of course, more than being able to accommodate folks and their cargo, the Bronco turns out to be quite the capable machine, as well. Power for my Badlands tester comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder good for 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, fed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters. That’s the “big” engine; the smaller one found in every trim except Badlands is a 1.5-litre three (3!)-cylinder good for 181 hp and 190 lb-ft. That’s fine, I suppose, but it is too bad that you only get the 2.0 if you opt for the top-spec Badlands trim, which starts at a notexactly-inexpensive $40,199 before options. Base price, meanwhile, is $32,199. Power comes on nice and smoothly with even a little bit of a hot hatchback-esque exhaust note which caught me totally off-guard. It’s a quick and zippy little thing this, spiriting you down the road with gumption and ensuring that you always have enough power on-tap for highway passes and so forth. You will be met with a bit of body roll as you take corners and speed, but that’s kind of to be expected with the tall ride height you’ve got here. The ride in general, however, is a good one with the dampers doing a good job of insulating occupants from road imperfections and so forth. Train track and other everyday obstacles are taken properly in stride. There are even some drive modes to choose from although here, they aren’t officially called drive modes, but “G.O.A.T.”– “Goes Over Any Type of Terrain” – modes. As you do. There are seven in total: Normal and Eco are good for city use, Sport and Slippery for highway use and Sand, Mud/Ruts and Rick Crawl for off-roading.

mud-ruts, and was good to go. This is an off-road grappler, this is, and it should have no problem getting its owners to backcountry trailheads accessible only by logging roads, for example. Which, in effect, really is the moral of the story; as much as the larger Bronco garnered much of the interest in the weeks and months leading up the launch, the Bronco Sport is likely the model that’s going to be the bigger seller here. It lands firmly in the ultra-popular small crossover segment, whereas the Bronco lands in whatever segment the Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender and Toyota 4Runner – call it “off-road mid-size SUV” – competes in. The Sport is good on fuel, it works in town and in the wild and it’s tailor-made for younger families and active individuals. That’s a tough group to crack, but it is one that’s growing, and this Bronco Sport is looking like a great example of right place, right time.

Ready to Play The all-new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong, additional photos courtesy of Stellantis Canada

W

hen Stellantis announces it’s making a 702-horsepower truck, there’s no need to ask why, but only when. Well the time is now: behold the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition. “The all-new 2021 Ram TRX sets the benchmark for extreme performance pickup trucks and solidifies Ram Truck’s position as the off-road truck leader,” says Mike Koval, head of Ram Brand at Stellantis North America in a press release. “Ram has a strong history of high-performance trucks and TRX adds to that while expanding the light-duty lineup with the segment’s best combination of performance, capability, luxury and technology.”

Another indicator of the truck’s true DNA is the functional hood scoop, adorned with LED clearance lights, responsible for channelling half of all the airflow during driving to the engine. On either side are blacked-out heat extracting vents, and there are also air curtains on the outer edges of the headlamps allowing air to pass through the fender improving high-speed aerodynamics. Our press loaner had the aluminum running boards to ease ingress and egress in and out of the 2,055-millimetre-tall vehicle, which is ap-

Aesthetically, designers made no effort to hide the brawn under the hood. First off, this variant is over 200 millimetres wider than normal, and features larger 18x9-inch wheels stuffed below the composite fender flares. The front axle was shifted forward 20 millimetres to accommodate the exclusive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory 325/65-R18 tires. The smoked headlamps utilize bi-functional projector LEDs, paired to matching partially darkened rear taillight lenses. proximately 50 millimetres higher than the regular 1500, though they’re too thin to be used comfortably. Optional full-length rock rails are available as well, for extra body and sill protection. The cargo box is a standard crew cab five-foot seven-inch size, boasting new wider, steel outers. A full-size spare sits underneath the bed between the rear axle and trailer hitch, and a bolted-in bed-mounted spare tire carrier can be ordered as seen on the example we tested. Having a backup, backup plan never hurts, especially one that looks this cool, but it obviously compromises the versatility. Inside, the décor is not any more subtle. Depending on the selected equipment group, the upholstery could be a top-of-the-line premium leather and suede with red and carbon fibre accenting. A flatbottom steering wheel — the first I’ve personally witnessed in a pickup — is a nice touch as are the accompanying aluminum paddle shifters. Pouch Attachment Ladder System (PALS) compatible seats allows bags and other equipment to hang conveniently behind. A vertically-oriented 12-inch tablet-style touchscreen serves as the centrepiece of the cabin, powered by the company’s intuitive Uconnect infotainment system. Similar to other Stellantis performance models, there are a number of apps like Performance and Off-road Pages to show a variety of driving information from digital g-force gauges to the pitch-and-roll of the vehicle. A neat little detail is a specifications plate on the centre console lid listing powertrain specifics, the

VIN number and a fun graphic showing the size of the TRX in relation to a Tyrannosaurus. The pièce de résistance, of course, is the 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 engine, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, putting out an incredible 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Getting from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds, and the estimated 12.9second quarter-mile time and launch control function would make most muscle car owners at the local drag strip jealous. I love a loud exhaust note as much as the next guy, however, a quiet mode would have been a nice feature to include as a consideration for my non-gearhead neighbours. The pickup absolutely roars at wide-open throttle and if the deafening whine of the supercharger doesn’t draw attention, the bright Flame Red with Diamond Black Crystal Pearl paint job definitely will. While I didn’t go off-road in the TRX, the truck can certainly pull its weight in that regard. Cue the five skid plates, 40 percent more rear-

wheel travel compared to the standard variant, Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive shocks, rear electronic locking differential and BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case. Or 30.2-degree approach, 21.9degree breakover and 23.5-degree departure angles. Whether track or trail, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is ready to play. Shaking it Up

2021 Ford Ranger Tremor Package Story and photos by Spencer Whitney

N

orth America’s favourite compact pickup made waves when it was relaunched in 2018. This totally redesigned truck was nearly identical to the extremely popular international Ranger platform, which had proven itself over the years as a reliable and hard-working vehicle. While much of the world prefers smaller rides, Ford took a gamble here: North America is not shy about its obsession with giant trucks. Adding to the challenge, Ford had to justify the off-road capabilities of this small platform to give it a fighting chance against well-established Jeep and Toyota 4x4s. Has it been enough to attract buyers who need a capable all-terrain pickup? Fast forward to 2021 and we have our answer - but not without compromise. In order to keep sales of the dune-jumping, North America-only F150 Raptor from being diluted, Ford declined to introduce a Ranger Raptor (available overseas) to our market. The resultant Tremor package may not seem as exciting, but it rallies together powertrain upgrades, suspension enhancement, and existing off-road technology features, and answers a critical question: is the Ranger a serious off-road platform? Although it’s smaller than its closest mid-size competitors by an average of 10 inches, the Ranger is still an extremely useful vehicle. By focusing on smaller engines and better use of space, Ford has crafted a nimble, capable pickup better suited to the average truck user – daily commuting and the occasional weekend getaway is all that many mid- and full-size pickups see. Building on that versatility, the Tremor package adds serious capability to an otherwise comfortable and economical daily driver. You’d have no regrets keeping this Ranger on pavement most of the time, and nothing but smiles when you venture off. The Tremor pack supplants the popular FX4 package and is added on top of either the already well-equipped Lariat Supercrew model, or the affordable SXT trim, and enhances several critically important off-road items. Retained from the FX4 package is an electronically controlled rear locking differential, which operates at low speeds to allow unmitigated

traction at the rear axle. We’re told that the Tremor’s locker can be enabled in 2WD mode, making for some potential fun in sandy & slippery off-road playgrounds. Helping to control that traction are selectable Terrain Management modes, modulating throttle response and traction control uptake in various situations. Polishing off the technical features, Ford’s unique Trail Control system is essentially low-speed cruise control for up- and down-hill crawls. It may take the fun out of off-road driving, but also inspires confidence when traction becomes a problem. An HD suspension system with conservative 1-inch lift allows for 32-inch all-terrain tires to sit comfortably in the arches; tire size isn’t necessarily critical for off-road capability, but every little bit helps to enhance ground clearance. To support the changes, Ford leveraged its partnership with Fox – who provide the phenomenal suspension system on Raptor trucks – to incorporate a set of Fox 2.0 bypass shock absorbers that help dampen off-road bumps and rumbles. Not only do these shocks look good, they also make for a smooth ride on rough gravel forestry roads. While 1-inch of lift may not sound very exciting, it’s important to note that factory-installed suspension systems must meet strict safety and handling requirements and are designed by suspension engineers. These people know that capability doesn’t have to be measured in inches. (To benefit, you’ll also get full warranty coverage at any Ford dealer.) Power for the Tremor is provided by a 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder turbocharged powerplant, paired with a 10-speed transmission. While this isn’t much of an enhancement from previous Ranger models, it’s still a lot of power for such a small truck engine – 270 horsepower and 310 ft-lb of torque is nothing to be ashamed of, and even takes mid-size competitors to task. In the visual enhancement department, designers have placed subtle but distinct cues to indicate the presence of a Tremor. Red coloured grille enhancements complement the aggressive front end – which also has a unique dark metallic grey colour. Recovery points at the front and rear are present in case your friends reluctantly need to pull you out of a sticky spot. Along the sides, that same metallic grey enhances the

ICE COLD ANYWHERE wheel arches and wheels (which are 17-inch and exclusive to the Tremor) and contrasts well with the available Cyber Orange paint. Somewhat clunky-looking running boards allow for easier access and protection from rocks, but do little to enhance off-road abilities – these could end up being a hindrance rather than a help, depending on the terrain. Inside, the Tremor is barely different from a standard Ranger. The seats have a Tremor logo embroidered in them, but that’s where the enhanced aesthetics end. Buyers can opt for either the XLT or the more luxurious Lariat package to base their Tremor on – the Lariat upgrade (as-tested) is well worth it for LED projector headlamps and tech features alone – although both packages are looking a bit outdated in 2021. The Ranger is due for a refresh, and it shows the most in the interior – this might even be the last Ford vehicle waiting for a life cycle update. That said, it’s still a practical, roomy experience for all passengers. We couldn’t recommend that four adults take an extended off-road trip in a Ranger, but for day trips it’s got plenty of space. In real-world conditions, the Tremor pack offers everything you could hope for. We took ours on a moderately rough abandoned forest service road to see what it could handle. The results were promising – even on extremely loose and steep roads, this Ranger never missed a beat. Although you’ll need a few enhancements to really take advantage of this truck as an overland platform – namely some kind of tonneau cover to protect your gear, and a set of cross bars to support a small roof-top tent – the instant peace of mind offered by an enhanced off-road package inspires confidence in all conditions. And just in case you find yourself with more rocks than you can handle, skid plates are present to protect essential components and nicely round out the list of must-haves when building an off-road rig.

Portable Fridge Freezers World-Class Technology

The size of the Ranger is also an advantage. Larger trucks (even mid-sizers) are not very nimble on trails oriented for smaller vehicles like Jeep Wranglers. The Ranger is a truly compact pickup, and because of its wheelbase and width, can navigate even the tightest trails – or easily turn around on them if need be. Although the F-150 Raptor is a tempting proposition, it’s just really, really big, and not well suited to the kind of terrain we venture to in Western Canada. (Then again, it’s also worth mentioning that the Tremor pack will be available on F-150 trucks this year, giving that model a stronger off-road presence without the Raptor premium.) Overland vehicles take on all kinds of shapes and sizes these days, and buyers are looking for something unique to carry them into the back country. The Tremor capitalizes on an already useful vehicle by adding critically important off-road oriented components, giving the owner a complete truck that has genuine off-road capability from the moment it’s driven off the lot. When the redesigned Ranger hits dealers sometime in the next two years, we wouldn’t be surprised to find the Raptor badge reluctantly make an appearance on a compact pickup – and it wouldn’t have to be much different from the Tremor package to justify the name.

Workand-Play

2021 Can-Am Commander XT Story and photos by Stephen Elmer

hen shopping for a side-by-side these days, there is less compromise than ever. You can still sell out for a pure sport model or stick with something utility focused, but the segment of crossover models built for work and play has become quite compelling and deserves consideration. And the latest new entrant is the fully redesigned 2021 Can-Am Commander. Styling on the new Commander will look familiar if you’ve seen a new Maverick Sport or Trail, blending an aggressive face with a sleek, sweptback body. Overall size on this unit is 130-inches long, 64 wide and 74.8 tall (330.2 cm x 162.6 cm x 189.9 cm). The wheelbase stretches to 90.6-inches and dry weight tips the scales at 1,675 pounds.

useful. It’s clear from the integration with the steel walls, which clip onto the tailgate pins when in use and fold flat when not, that this accessory was designed to be part of the bed right from the beginning of design. A total of 600 pounds can be loaded into the dump bed, while overall payload capacity for this machine is 1,030 pounds. A two-inch hitch receiver is also present and ready to tow up to 2,000 pounds. It’s that dump bed that makes the Commander so useful, but it’s the engine and suspension that makes it so fun. Can-Am decided to only offer the 1000R powertrain, which is a 976cc V-twin engine that puts

While the front end screams fun, the rear of the new Commander features a dump bed that allows it to be a much more useful unit than any of the Maverick models. Measuring 29.5-inches long, 45.2 wide and 10.6 deep (75.1 cm x 114.7 cm x 27 cm), the new bed of the Commander features plastic cut outs to allow for wooden dividers, drings in all four corners and a host of available accessories that make it work even harder. Our Commander was outfitted with a bed extender that cleverly uses steel walls to wrap around the open tailgate, making the bed even more out 100 horsepower. That power is sent through a CVT and four-wheel drive system that features a rear locker and Can-Am’s Visco-Lok automatic front locking differential. Combine all that power and traction with the 15-inches of suspension travel in the front and rear and the Commander comes alive on the trail. Having a selectable Sport mode helps to put the power down instantly, and the 100 ponies available here is more than enough to help steer this machine with the throttle. The power steering is on the lighter side here, a great choice for low driver fatigue, though when driving hard a little more feedback would be preferred. Whoops and rocks are handled with little drama thanks to the length of the suspension, while the clearances are excellent here, offering 13-inches of ground clearance. 24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021

It’s during hard trail riding that the true character of the Commander is revealed, and it certainly skews more towards the fun-focused Maverick models than the workfocused Defender. With the bed on the back, it turns the Commander into an ultimate trail machine with the capability to haul a massive amount of cargo with you, whether that be a cooler, camping gear or mountain bikes. Rather than thinking about this machine as the perfect work platform that can have fun, it’s better to approach it as the best setup for a recreational machine with a built-in dump bed. None of this is a bad thing, but if you’re buying the Commander to pound post holes into the ground on your farm all day, you want to think again. The step-in height is fairly high here, a characteristic that doesn’t matter on a sport machine, but when you’re getting in and out of your work machine all day, this entry could become annoying. Once inside, the seating positing is long and low like a sports car, feeling comfortable when you’re hustling hard, but again, not the easiest position to get in and out of if you’re doing that multiple times. This is one of the compromises you will have to make if you use a 2021 Commander for work, but the upside is certainly worth it considering how formidable an off-road machine this is. Besides the position, the interior is a great place for either trail riding or getting jobs done. A large glove box is flanked by a centre console storage cubby, while a second smaller sealed storage is found right in front of the driver. The inner door skins also feature some storage, so there are tons of spots inside the Commander to stash your things. A digital display gives you all the necessary information in a clean layout and it tilts with the steering wheel, which means the angle of the screen will always be right where you want it. Another small feature that Can-Am gets right: cupholders. Unlike the large open plastic cupholders that don’t actually hold anything and allow your water bottles to go flying into the forest after the first bump,

Can-Am puts rubber bumpers into its cupholders which will help to hold your drink in place. They’re still not a totally foolproof plan as, if the trail gets rough enough, you can still overcome the friction of that rubber, but at least Can-Am is trying to solve a problem that every manufacturer has. The Commander was tested as the XT model, which brings total width to 64-inches, adds 18-inch Trail King tires, a front bumper, 4,500-pound winch, a full roof, 7.6-inch digital display, LED signature lighting and different colour options. Pricing for the 2021 Commander starts at $20,499 CAD and climbs to $23,599 for the XT package. There is also a four seat model for those that need to haul extra folks. The all-new Commander compromises less than ever to achieve its two separate goals. It’s also clear that Can-Am has added some truly thoughtful touches to make sure this companion will be helpful during a long day’s trail ride, or hours around the farm.
