Regardless, the 360 boys were able to cut six inches off the old hood, and they narrowed the replacement hood to make it all fit. Finally, the rear end has been tubbed to fit the big 18-inch wheels.

he modern hot rod industry seemingly has an answer to just about anything that anyone could dream up. Whether it be bodywork, powertrain or chassis, there is almost always some kind of kit or specialized part that can make most visions come true. However, Calgary’s Bob Reiseck had bigger ambitions for his old ’65 Malibu. The car had been in his family for many a year and in While the body and paint are spectacular to look at, it’s the little that time had slipped into a less-than-favourable condition. Let’s start with the most obvious stand-out trait, the way this ’65 Malibu shines. All the paint on this car has been wet sanded and polished a multitude of times to a mirror-like finish, and I mean all the paint - everywhere. The customer wanted everything sprayed with the unique blue hue; the underside of the body, interior panels and even the suspension arms, motor mounts and chassis were painstakingly worked into a world-class show-car shine. However, the paint couldn’t be sprayed until the fabrication department finished up spinning its magic with the body. As we mentioned, there wasn’t much left of this Malibu convertible, and aftermarket suppliers don’t do a whole lot of convertible parts. The rear quarter panels in particular received a massive amount of attention, as they started out as hardtop replacements that were fabricated and formed into the shape of the unique convert26 Performance Plus Aug/sept 2012

quality shine as the rest of the bodywork. That big-block comes in the form of a 502 cubic-inch crate motor fitted with a polished March pulley system in the front and an evil looking one-off Kinsler fuel injection system with eight beautiful trumpets standing tall and proud. The system was made just for this car so that it could sit under the hood. Controlling the rate at which the big 502 sucks up fuel is a FAST XFI fuel air spark computer that programs spark and ignition timing. Then the power is sent through a 700 R4 transmission that directs all the violence of the big block to the rear tires. As the old saying goes, power is nothing without control, and this Malibu continues with, yes you guessed it, a custom one-off Detroit Speed convertible chassis, the only one in the world. Of course, it is all wet-sanded and polished as I mentioned earlier. Fully-adjustable coilovers can be found at all four corners accompanied by six-piston Wilwood big disc brakes. And finally, steering duties are dealt with by a Flaming River steering column. either side, as well as front and rear bumpers being cut four inches and sucked into the bodywork for a clean modern look. On top of this, all the trim is custom one-off billet aluminum that has been polished to a chrome-like shine, while all the stainless steel in the car received an actual chrome dip. The custom work continues in the interior where the dash has been stretched two-and-a-half inches. It has beautiful handmade upholstery that features leather that has been stretched throughout, with stainless steel cup holders and speakers inserted into the custom design. The trunk gets a similar treatment with leather wrap surrounding three amps, two subs and covering four deep-cycle batteries that power the manic sound system and all the onboard technology that has been infused into this classic. At the business end of the equation, there is a highly polished bigblock that provides the forward motivation, finished off with the same

Old Time Chivalry In Classic Rally

Jellybean Autocrafters get wounded TR250 back in the game

in Anchorage, Alaska. The event attracts collector cars from around the world to compete, everything from vintage Bentley Speed Sixes to Jaguar E-Types to Aston Martins DB4s to VW Beetles. As the rally made its way from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, across the border to Osoyoos, British Columbia, more than two weeks of travel over hard terrain was taking its toll on many of the cars. One in particular was the UK-based Triumph TR250 of David Roberts that had its overdrive making sickly sounds. Turns out he couldn’t have broken down in a better place, as the team struggled on to Vancouver where he contacted Jellybean Autocrafters, a company well known for building cars that do just this kind of sport. “The call to the shop was made and it was all hands on deck,” commented Ewald Penner. Penner began working the phones to find out if there were any spare overdrives available in the city, to no avail. Roberts arrived with the car at 3:00 PM and the Jellybean staff went to work dismantling the car, not knowing if they would be able to have it back together in time to make it to the next morning’s stage, knocking the team out of the competition.

here is a reason I like rallying so much. Not only is it a form of motorsport that is much more ragged and on the edge then its track-confined counterparts, but with events working their way cross-country, the sport demands creative problem solving abilities when the unexpected arises, while it also brings out the generosity of both competitors and unsuspecting shops who are thrust into the competition with more serious issues. Just such a warm story occurred during the Trans-America Challenge, a TSD (time, speed, distance) competition that took drivers from New York, across the States, north through Osoyoos and Vancouver and on their way to the finish line 32 Performance Plus AUG / SEPT 2012

These guys spend a ton of money to get this far and we took it upon ourselves to ensure that he was able to keep going when it counted, and with the tight deadline, that really does get the adrenaline rushing,” concluded Penner. However, Jellybean Autocrafters were not the only ones lending a helping hand when the Trans-America came to town. Penner comments that there was also a Mercedes up on jack stands in the parking lot that did not require as much help as

The Overdrive was pulled out and dismantled in hopes that the shop could repair the damaged unit. The bearings were gone, the gears were starting to disintegrate and the crew was beginning to wonder how the determined little Triumph even made it to the shop in the first place. Penner then got on the phone to local industrial suppliers hoping that a replacement parts could be found. B&B Bearing answered the call and stayed open extra-late to ensure that Jellybean received replacements that would fit, while Rob Mohr helped find a Speedo gear that would work. Jellybean then measured up the bearings and machined up their own adapters to make it all fit together. By 11:30 that night, the car came off the hoist and tested fine down the local streets. Roberts was able to get to his hotel for a few precious hours sleep before continuing on in the rally that saw him finish ninth out of a field of 54. The overdrive would last all the way to the finish.

the Triumph, while MCL Motor Cars were also hard at work on one of the competition’s classic 911s that also rolled into town wounded. Penner kids, “But our car finished ahead of theirs, though.” It’s another one of those feel-good stories that comes with just about every long-distance rally or touring event. In an era where racers and teams do their utmost to try and shaft the other guy for victory, the camaraderie and generosity of rallying constantly reminds me why this form of motorsport is so great.

If there was one thing the average classic car owner needs to know about Graveyard Restorations, something that people might not know or understand, what would you like to say about the business that would benefit future customers?

I have been into cars my whole life and have always been into custom cars. I really like the design element and the whole process of it. I started how most shops do, in a backyard garage that slowly evolved into a business. It’s definitely a long road to get a shop off the ground. I am entirely selftaught which definitely helps with the way I see and approach things, but it takes the right customers who trust in the vision you have.

Well, I think the biggest thing is that we can do anything car-related, which makes it easy for the customer trying to build a car. He drops it off as a shell and can pick it up as a finished vehicle, which eliminates the need to cart it from shop to shop. We look after the whole build.

What would you say separates Graveyard Restorations from the other shops out there; what makes you special? Definitely our ability to complete monster projects in a timely manner. We can build a turnkey car whether it be a muscle car resto or custom and we are capable of completing every aspect of the build in the shop. We are also getting into new car customizing with lift and body kits. Basically, we are a one-stop shop for anything related to customizing. PP: Where do you see Graveyard Restorations in the next decade? I would like to see it grow into a big shop having separate

If you could build any car you want for yourself, what car would you start with and why would you pick that vehicle?

departments for metal fabrication, paint and interior with collision as well. There will definitely be a lot of irons in the fire at that point but I have great staff and I think we can get there. Do you have a particular style, a specialty that helps define the cars that leave your shop? I think a broad knowledge of how to build cars and the ability to bring a vision to life is an asset, but I would say my specialty is building cars that look good and are really fun to drive. Building cars that look good and cars that work are two totally different things.

I have drawings for a Hudson Terraplane that I would like to build one day, but who knows if I will ever be able to allot the time to it. Anything I’ve ever tried to build for myself has always been sent down the road for one reason or another. And of course, what type of fabrication, modifications, parts and goals would you implement into the build? What would the end result look like? There would be a lot of modifications. The car would definitely be on air and ride really low.

So what type of projects are currently sitting in your shop? Currently in the shop nearing completion is a ‘73 custom Camaro, ‘33 Ford coupe, ‘38 Ford P/U full custom which will be an awesome truck, ‘68 Cougar, ‘37 Ford coupe that will be a mix of protouring and custom, and we just had a ‘69 Camaro show up that will be pretty over the top. For the most part, a lot of the projects in the shop require a lot of fabricating, and very rarely do we have a factory-correct resto come through the doors. It just kind of worked out that way.
