Jellybean autocrafters, surrey, BC. project brings many unique challenges, as it is the opposite of what most builds are in the sense that they are taking something modified and turning it back into the way it originally came. This means every square inch of the car must match the OEM specifications, with littleto-no wiggle room. Not every car builder out there could pull this off, but with the quality of work you get from Jellybean, you can be sure it will look just like it did the day it was first built.

n a world that seems to put a premium on quantity over quality, it’s good to know that there are people out there who are looking to buck this trend. After realizing that finding enough qualified people to ensure the same high standard was met on every build was proving a difficult task, Jellybean AutoCrafters out of Surrey, B.C. recently moved next door to a smaller shop, and reduced to a smaller staff, all in the name of a better-quality product. This move has put them back to their roots and has proven to be a positive one. Not only does it allow better control of each project, it has returned balance to Ewald and Kurt’s home life, allowing family to again take priority over running a business, and giving time to do what cars are all about - cruising, meeting some people, and having some fun. On first thought, some may find it hard to believe that something significant could be gained by downsizing, but that is simply not the case. For example, by switching to using only a three-man crew, Jellybean found they could have each member working in a section that they were particularly strong in to ensure the best work possible is done. Also, with fewer people to communicate through, customers could now speak directly to the person who is actually building their vehicle to ensure nothing gets lost in translation, which is especially important when you consider the amount of communication that would be necessary when designing and building a customized vehicle.

Jellybean is also very involved in their local community, as made evident by them being a part of the NASKARZ program for the atrisk youth of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The program helps the youth build life skills, and gets them involved in trades as they, along with the guys at Jellybean, are hot rodding a 1935 Ford. The car currently sits at Jellybean’s shop as they fabricate new body panels and floors, suicide the doors, design and perform many custom touches on the body before they take it over to Vancouver Community College to allow the youth to get their hands dirty, and pick up a couple of credits for VCC along the way. This program will go a long way

towards helping build the Downtown Eastside back up again, and since its inception, Vancouver has gone from #1 to #37 on the list of highest car-theft rates in North America.

Another thing that helps set Jellybean apart from the rest is the amount of detail they put in to making sure your car is as reliable as it will be beautiful. They believe that no matter how good of a condition the car is in, it is ultimately meant to be driven. The first order of business was stripping the car down, sending it out to Redi-Strip Metal Cleaning in Delta, B.C. to clean it up and get rid of any rust. Shortly after, Les decided to sell his company so he could put more of his time and money into the car. The chrome parts went out to Superior, he bought a rotisserie for his home garage to gain easy access to every inch of the car, and he started out looking for new parts to add to the project. At the time, there happened to be a 426 Hemi engine in the classifieds of this very publication, and once he made the purchase, he went to Neil Lemon of B+N Hot Rods to help select the rest of the drivetrain and other components. From there, Les decided he would strengthen the unibody, narrow the rear frame and add some new cross members for the 28 Performance Plus AUG /SEPT 2013

started to arrive and Les was finally starting to get things closer to where he wanted them after numerous ups and downs that can be expected when building a car basically from scratch. A new Martz K-Member was installed along with a Lakewood Quicktimes bellhousing, a Tremec five-speed tranny paired with a McLeod clutch and pressure plate, a Dutchman Dana 60 axle and rear end, and the 426 Hemi engine he had already found.

but Ray suggested he check out Curtis Ham’s true fire paint. Les clearly liked what he saw, and after meeting with Curtis, decided that this is the direction he would go with his car. Depending on whom you ask, Ray or Les thought up the idea of putting a barracuda skeleton on the hood, and that’s how the Bad Fish was born.

Next, it was over to the guys at Muffler Tech (now M-Tech Next up on the docket was paint, and for that, it was off to see Automotive) to design an exhaust. A few more minor additions were added over time, such as a 150-shot of nitrous oxide, a set of QA1 coilovers, and 20x12 Foose wheels for the rear and 19x7s for the front, just to name a few. Realizing the build was coming to a close, it was time to pay Michelle from Inside Edge a visit to decide on what would be done for the upholstery. She was able to talk him into luxurious Lamborghini leather with alligator inserts, and with that, the final steps of the build were beginning to happen. With just two days to spare, the car was finished, and Les knew he had something special. It was unveiled at the World of Wheels Show at Tradex in Abbotsford, B.C., and has continued to turn the heads of not only car enthusiasts, but clearly judges as well. It has had the honour of taking home numerous trophies and awards and shows no signs of slowing down, literally or figuratively. Continued on pg.34

The folks that lived and loved the drive-in culture come to relive that era, while younger Canadians can get an idea of what many of their parents and older family members got to experience in their youth.

In short, Cruisin’ the Dub is a program unique to A&W that takes customers at its restaurants back to a different era, a time warp, if you will. As such, it is no surprise that the business model for the program focuses on the Baby Boomer generation, a conscious decision that A&W made some 15 years ago. That doesn’t mean, of course, that all the younger generations aren’t welcome to come out and have fun; indeed, the more the merrier, but they 36 Performance Plus AUG / SEPT 2013

or the first time ever, Vancouver would have a large auction for collector cars, along with a speciality car show, and it would all happen at the historic Pacific National Exhibition, where so many hot rod shows were held in the early days. It was the Vancouver Collector Car Show, Sale + Auction in June, and for a first effort, most would call it a big success. Sylvia Braddick, back in the day the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only female wheelstander driver, greeted everyone to the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s large booth filled with memorabilia.
