he AJAC Canadian Car of the Year award was handed out at the 2014 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto and this year’s winner is the 2014 Mazda6. The Mazda6 entered the running by easily winning the Best New Family Car over $30,000 award based on testing done in October at AJAC’s TestFest, which automatically made it a finalist for the CCOTY. The Canadian Car of the Year award is one of the most coveted awards in the industry, as it represents the voices of over 80 top Canadian automotive experts, and is judged on a large variety of qualities such as value, comfort, and fuel economy, just to name a few. The Mazda6 entered its third generation for the 2014 model year and now features SKYACTIV Technology, which is a series of technologies developed solely by Mazda which increase fuel efficiency and engine output. Sinkhole Opens Under National Corvette Museum Causing Massive Damage The National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky recently experienced something they probably thought they never would when a large sinkhole opened under the floor in the Skydome area of the museum. A reported eight one-of-a-kind Corvettes, portions of some of the display stands and rails, as well as large concrete floor slabs fell into the sinkhole which caused serious damage to the Corvettes involved. Thankfully, the damage wasn’t enough to shut down the entire facility, and nobody was hurt in the incident as it happened in the early hours of the morning before

He was a loyal husband, father, employer, friend and great supporter of this publication. All-New Kia K900 Luxury Sedan Debuted at Toronto Auto Show The all-new Kia K900 luxury sedan was debuted at the 2014 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario. The K900 is based on parent company Hyundai’s Genesis sedan platform and will feature either a 5.0-litre V8 engine producing 420 horsepower under the hood, or a 3.8-litre Lamba V6 that makes an impressive 311 horsepower, which would make it the most powerful V6 in Kia’s lineup. Both engines will have only one transmission option, which will be an 8-speed automatic. The exterior of the K900 has a bold

look similar to that of the Cadenza and is also reminiscent of a BMW. V8 models will feature standard adaptive LED headlights which have 16 LED bulbs to provide powerful, natural light and will follow the bends in the road to make sure you can always see where you’re going. Inside, a plethora of features can be found such as standard high-grade leather in the V6, and standard Nappa leather in the V8 model. On the technology side of things, the V8 VIP model features a 12.3-inch full colour LCD screen as its instrument panel, and both the V6 technology package and V8 VIP models will feature Kia’s first Heads Up Display. BMW i8 to be First Production Vehicle to Feature Laser-Powered Headlights When the 2015 BMW i8 Plug-In Hybrid sports car hits the markets, it will be the first production vehicle in the world to offer headlamps with a completely new laser light technology. Laser diodes are ten times smaller than conventional light diodes, which mean they not only save on installation space inside the headlamp, but they also save weight. The new technology works by several high-performance diodes emitting a strong beam via special lenses onto a fluorescent phosphorus substance which is inside the headlamp. This substance is able to transform the beam to a bright white light that is ten times more intensive than conventional light sources. The laser lights are able to deliver a high beam range of up to 600 metres, and are able to save up to 30 percent more energy than the highly efficient LED lights. Although this will be only the first vehicle to offer the laser light technology, in the years ahead, BMW will be offering more and more vehicles equipped with the technology. achieving a record top speed of 270.49 miles per hour (435.31 km/h), according to a report by Autoblog. The run was made back in February on the 3.22 mile (5.1 km) landing runway at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and saw the Venom GT narrowly beat the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport which posted a speed of 267.81 mph (430 km/h). Although the speed was confirmed by a Racelogic Vbox telemetry system, it will not make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for a number of reasons. First and foremost, to qualify as an official speed run, the vehicle must make two runs in opposite directions with the average speed between the two runs serving as the recorded speed, and due to unknown circumstances, NASA would only let the Venom complete one run. Another obstacle in getting the speed record in the Guinness Book is a new requirement which calls for at least 30 examples being produced to qualify as a production vehicle. Hennessey is only planning on building 29 Venom GTs. The same Autoblog report suggested that the car was still accelerating when it reached the 270 mph mark, and only slowed because the driver was running out of runway.

when Audi showed off its new TT Quattro sport concept car at the Geneva Motor Show with 420 horsepower under the hood from a 2.0L TFSI engine, it was hard not to be amazed. The TT concept boasts 210 horsepower per litre of displacement, which is more than the 2011 victorious Le Mans R18 race car. Weighing in at just 1,300 kg and boasting an impressive 330 lb-ft of torque, the TT Quattro sport concept is able to go 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds. In addition to the sheer power of the engine, there are a few technologies and features added that even further enhance the race car feel of this vehicle. The wheel-selective torque control transfers drive torque from the wheels on the inside of a curve to the outside when necessary, which allows for even more precise cornering, and the dual-clutch S-tronic transmission shifts in split seconds. Maserati Proud to Welcome New Ghibli to the Canadian Market Maserati has proudly unveiled its new mid-size luxury sedan, the Ghibli, to the Canadian market at the 2014 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario. The Ghibli, which represents the first-ever Maserati mid-size four-door luxury sports sedan, will feature a Ferrari-built twin-turbo V6 engine that will make more than 400 horsepower and will be put to the road through an allwheel drive system. Inside the Ghibli, rich Italian leathers can be found along with other high quality materials, to give it the classy look associated with the Maserati nameplate. The car will feature advanced suspension, Brembo brakes and extensive use of aluminum, which all work together to provide a dynamic driving experience that’s not only luxurious, but also incredibly fun. Maserati is entering its 100th year of craftsmanship in 2014 and hopes this new mid-size luxury sedan will help in its ongoing efforts to grow the company. the trademark for the name “Supra,” which will lead to intense speculation as to whether the auto giant will resurrect the popular sport coupe that hasn’t been sold in North America since 1998. Renewing trademarks like this isn’t uncommon, as car companies don’t want to lose the rights to certain nameplates, even if they have no immediate plans to use them. This one, however, seems to carry a little more weight, since when the original trademark expired in 2006, Toyota didn’t attempt to renew again until 2010 and even then didn’t follow through. Now, almost a full eight years since the original trademark expired, Toyota has followed through and wants to again trademark the name Supra. This news is met with the FT-1 Sports Coupe Concept which was debuted in Detroit, bearing a similar look to Supras of the past, and many fans are hoping that’s not by accident and that it may become the newest Supra. Even if the Supra returns to the U.S. market, there is no guarantee we will see it here in Canada, but we can hope. Well the product planners and designers at BMW are a resilient lot, so they have decided to take another kick at the GT can. This time, however, the car is based on the 3 Series sedan, and much to my surprise, the concept works much better on the smaller platform. At first glance, the car is immediately recognizable as a 3 Series, especially if approached from the front, as the elongated headlights and dual kidney grille treatment are shared across the line. However, one look at the profile reveals the extra length and graceful upsweep of the body line. The rear end treatment is dominated by subtle curves and a gently sloping roof line. All of these cues give the GT its own unique identity. Like many Canadians, I have always been a fan of the BMW 3 Series cars, but as a larger individual, they tend to be a tight fit for me. This is not the case with the BMW 335i Gran Turismo, which benefits from a stretched wheelbase (up 110 mm when compared to the sedan) and 12 RPM April / May 2014

engines. The economical 328i GT features the 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, a tidy power plant that delivers 240 horsepower and 255 pounds-feet of torque, while the 335i model sports a straight six-cylinder engine producing 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Consumers have embraced BMW’s xDrive allwheel drive system, so this proven technology is fitted as standard equipment on both GT models, as is a silky-smooth automatic transmission with eight speeds. BMW has fitted the M leather steering wheel with easy-to-reach shift paddles to permit the driver to make their own gear selections in short order. The 335i GT is big for a 3 Series, but it still manages to deliver impressive performance for a car of its size. Acceleration is strong and linear, especially when the driver elects to shift the gears manually using the side gate on the console mounted shifter or the paddle units, and sprints from 0-100 km/h occur in a claimed 5.4 seconds. BMW owners tend to be individuals who enjoy the act of driving, so enthusiastic drivers will appreciate that the 335i GT comes equipped with BMW’s Driving Experience Control, an electronic device that affords the driver the ability to set the car’s engine and driving dynamics to best suit road conditions, driving style, or sporting intentions. The system offers four settings - Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, or Sport+ - the latter of which is best reserved for track use as it minimizes traction and stability settings while sharpening the feel of the steering, transmission, and throttle response. My test vehicle was also equipped with BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension. This advanced system employs electronically controlled dampers to adapt the car’s ride and handling to meet your individual needs. While obviously not a sports car, the 335i GT will surprise as it uses its long wheelbase, dynamic suspension and extra weight to help it stick to the road in corners and track with a level of precision usually reserved for much smaller automobiles. As the 335i Gran Turismo is a new model for 2014, we will have to wait to see if consumers take to the GT concept the second time around. I find it interesting, as it provides its owner with a luxurious touring vehicle blessed with the carefully engineered ride and performance characteristics that make the 3 Series sedans so popular with affluent Canadians, but with the versatility and added utility that is usually reserved for traditional CUV designs. Add to this the all-season traction that comes along with BMW’s xDrive system, and you may just have the perfect automobile for the image-conscious family.

Sporty Sedan The 2014 Lexus IS 350 AWD Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

exus’ entry-luxury IS sedan plays in a very competitive segment, and the last generation was probably the most conservative of all in its design. Well, conservatism is gone at Lexus, as the new IS will not be mistaken for any other mid-size luxury sedan, with its gaping spindle-shaped grille leading the way. Moving rearward from there reinforces the aggressive nature of the IS.

Still, the F Sport treatment gives the IS some serious performance capabilities even in AWD form, with the likes of 18-inch wheels shod in tires wider at the rear than the front, Adaptive Variable Suspension, paddle shifters, and various trim pieces. The Drive Mode knob on the console lets the driver adjust settings like throttle response and engine performance from Normal to Eco or Sport, and the latter setting firms up the suspension, too. There is even a Sport Plus mode, presumably for track days. Under the hood lives the same engine as the last IS generation, the ubiquitous 3.5-litre V6. With 306 horsepower, it delivers plenty of power for most people, and there aren’t many engines that can match it for quiet refinement, either.

The model we tested was the top-of-the-line IS 350 AWD, the latter, of course, standing for all-wheel drive, with the optional F Sport Executive Package, which is short for “every option available” and a distinctly performance image. The all-wheel drive on the IS is a full-time system, with 50-50 power distribution that can vary as much as 30 front/70 rear, with the rearward bias the best for balanced, aggressive driving. Still, the IS with rear-drive only is offered for those fully committed to sporty driving over a bit more traction, and it has an eight-speed transmission versus the AWD’s six-gear unit, and variable ratio steering, too, to name just two differences that make the AWD a bit As befits a sports sedan, the tachometer is the most prominent more of a compromise. gauge facing the driver, and it has a unique feature on the F Sport models – it moves, from the centre of the gauge cluster, to the side, depending on which information you need. If all you want to know is temperature, fuel level, odometer, the basic stuff, leave it in the centre. If you want to know more, such as audio settings and navigation status, push a button on the steering wheel and the tach moves to make more room.

Driving the IS350, you sit in a very supportive seat, facing a dashboard that looks a bit disjointed from a design standpoint, as if it was designed by a committee. In any case, the materials and their fit-andfinish were as you’d expect from Lexus, which is to say high-end, in an avant-garde sort of way. With the F Sport treatment, its handling was smooth and grippy in all situations, especially in wet conditions with that extra front-end traction. Overall, one could say that the IS350 AWD with F Sport package is all about overall competency and balance in a mid-size sport sedan. It does everything asked of it to a high level, and delivers Lexus levels of luxury, technology, and refinement.

Affordable Fun The 2014 Scion FR-S

he Toyota Motor Company has a long history of producing sports and GT cars, so when the company decided to add a compact sports coupe to its Scion catalogue, enthusiast drivers got excited. In an effort to add some spark to the mix, the company initiated the Toyota 86 program with Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). This intriguing partnership led to the production of two new compact sports coupes aimed directly at the North American market - the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ. The two cars share a platform and the majority of mechanical bits, so performance is on par. Subtle styling cues inside and out, and slight differences in standard equipment is what sets them apart.

The Scion FR-S takes its moniker from a description of its platform - Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport. Launched for 2013, the FR-

S features a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine fitted with both direct and port fuel injection. This compact power plant was designed by Subaru, so it should come as no surprise that it is a horizontallyopposed boxer design. The 2.0-litre D-4S engine idles a little rough and emits a rather odd exhaust note, but it produces 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, and redlines at a very healthy 7,400 rpm. Sprints from a standing start to 100 kilometres-per-hour can be executed in 7.3 seconds. While not exceptionally quick, the clamber of the mechanical fury taking place under the long hood creates an atmosphere that makes it feel like you are travelling much faster. 20 RPM April / May 2014

The Scion FR-S comes equipped with a six-speed, short-throw manual transmission as standard equipment, but a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management is available as an option ($1,180). Handling is this car’s strong point. The rearwheel drive layout and light weight (1,251 kilograms) hearken back to the legendary sports cars of the past, and help deliver a very entertaining driving experience. The electric power steering feels precise and true, but with a little extra effort you can initiate enough tail wag to drift through tight radius turns. Surprisingly, body roll is minimal, largely due to the car’s low centre of gravity.

their head from making contact with the ceiling. The rear seating area is best reserved for groceries and gym bags. The suspension on the FR-S is a MacPherson strut setup in front, and a double-wishbone type in the rear. This combination is quite firm, but the overall ride was pleasant. Enthusiast drivers will find that the FR-S communicates its intentions through the seat-of-your-pants, much like in a dedicated track car. This is especially the case when you operate in the car’s stability control system in track mode.

Performance cars are only as good as their braking systems, so the engineers at Scion have mounted oversized, ventilated disc brakes in all four corners to help keep enthusiasm in check. Stops from triple digit speeds were short and drama free, as overall handling was predictable and the brakes remained fade-free. Toyota has decided to keep things simple, as that is the Scion way, so there are few options available. Popular choices will include a rear spoiler, fog lights, and a Bongiovi Acoustics DPS digital audio system. My choice would be the TRD exhaust system, which I assume will give the FR-S the throaty growl that is currently missing. At $26,450, the Scion FR-S is one of the most affordable performance automobiles in Canada.

Acting Fast The Updated 2014 Chevrolet Malibu Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Chevrolet Canada It’s not often that you hear of a car receiving a refresh only one year after a new generation debuted, but that’s just what Chevrolet has done with the 2014 edition of the Malibu. When the new 2013 Malibu debuted last year, it was met with a mixed reception with the general consensus being it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. While it was still a competent vehicle, some of the common complaints were that it didn’t look much different than the previous generation, it lacked rear seat legroom, and was generally uncomfortable for all occupants. Chevy has addressed all of that and more and hopes that with the changes, the Malibu will once again reach the top of the mid-size sedan segment. The only update to the Malibu’s exterior for 2014 is the re-designed front fascia that now features a bolder, sportier look complete with a blacked-out mesh grille that is definitely reminiscent of the great looking 2014 Chevy Impala and is a huge improvement over the outgoing model. The same squared Camaro-esque taillights are found on the rear and they seem to be on kind of a ‘love it or hate it’ relationship with the general public.

more comfort while sitting in the front, but also contribute to the added 1.25-inches of knee room found in the back seat. The centre console also received some work and now offers a longer armrest, and dedicated storage for two cell phones. Under the hood, the reworked 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with start/stop technology is standard, and now makes one less horsepower and five less lb-ft of torque, all in the name of better fuel economy. Our test model, however, featured the much peppier 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that makes an impressive 259 horsepower along with 295 lb-ft of torque, which is up a whopping 35 lb-ft over last year thanks to a software upgrade. These will be the only two options available for the 2014 Malibu as the Eco version is no longer available. During my test week with the Malibu, I had to do quite a bit more driving than I normally do and I was pleased to find that it was able to handle everything I threw at it with ease. I found the driving position to be very comfortable, something that isn’t always easy for a tall person, thanks in part to the new, softer front seats and also the revamped suspension which provided a very smooth ride whether I was in the city or on the highway. The four-cylinder turbo engine provided amazing acceleration while still posting impressive fuel economy numbers of 10.1 L/100 km in the city and 6.6L/100 km on the highway. On top of that, Chevy has also enhanced the Malibu’s crash avoidance capability by adding the optional Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems.

Clearly, there was no dancing around the subject; the 2013 Malibu Inside, the Malibu’s front seats have been redesigned and now wasn’t as successful as Chevy thought it would be and some change offer more-deeply sculpted seatbacks that not only provide much was definitely needed. It appears that they listened to the feedback and deserve praise for addressing exactly what they needed to in order to remain relevant in the ever-popular mid-size sedan segment. Well done Chevy, well done.

Ford C-MAX Energi

that is charged by on-board means, primarily by the regeneration of braking energy. It gets its best fuel efficiency in the city, where it can run a block or two on electric power alone before the batteries need topping up, whereupon you’ll be hearing the 2.0-litre four cylinder at work, like any old-tech gasoline car. After some normal braking, the batteries have enough juice to start the process over again. Fuel efficiency is rated at 4.0 L / 100 km.

Worth the added cost?

The C-MAX Energi (PHEV) takes the basic hybrid formula (same engine and electric motor) and switches in as big a battery pack as could be crammed into this compact’s body, a 7.6 kWh monster, with

ook around any big city these days, and you’ll see electric charging stations – in public parking lots, outside restaurants, next to office buildings – everywhere. And of course, their numbers continue to grow as local governments demand their inclusion in new developments. Many of the cars charging up at them are pure electrics (EVs), great vehicles for inner-city single-day usage. But, for those times when greater range is needed, a back-up engine is the way to go. Of course, we have known this for a decade-and-a-half, as hybrids (HEVs) are well-established in many new car lineups. But with the advent of new battery technology, allowing more charge, more quickly, in a smaller battery, the move is to what is now called a plug-in hybrid vehicle, or PHEV for short. Chances are, some of the vehicles you see plugged in will be Fords, if only because the company has gone all-in and offers EV, HEV and PHEV across a few different models. Two of the models with both HEV and PHEV versions are the C-MAX and Fusion, with the plug-ins known by their monikers Energi. While their drivetrains are essentially the same, they are different vehicles. The C-MAX is a high-roof compact with fold-down rear seats for cargo versatility, while the Fusion is a more traditional four-door sedan that puts more of a premium on passenger space, with a smaller trunk due to the batteries taking up additional space, something common in hybrids. We’ll concentrate on the C-MAX, because space limitations dictate we choose one of them, and because it is a good illustration of the pros and cons of hybrid technology with two different approaches to battery execution. The C-MAX Hybrid (HEV) follows the path laid down by the Toyota Prius, with a fairly small 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery

over five times the capacity of the hybrid’s battery. This changes the game entirely. Since the battery holds so much more juice, it made sense to give it the capacity to be recharged from a 120 or 240 AC power supply – like in your home or office. So now, you don’t have to rely entirely on the car’s onboard power generation (although that still exists); you can plug it in, set out and, with a full charge, get your first 34 kilometres or so on electric power alone, before the above described hybrid process begins. Of course, you pay for that added electric range on your hydro bill, but you use even less gasoline than a hybrid. The Energi’s fuel efficiency is rated at 1.9L / 100 km combined. RPM April / May 2014 23

There are many other things to consider between the two C-MAX models, to say nothing of a compact car with a standard drivetrain. First is the direct impact of that much larger battery pack. It weighs much more – like, over 100 kilograms more – making the Energi weigh about 1,766 kg, or almost 3,900 pounds. This is a compact, remember; the gasoline Focus compact, upon whose platform the C-MAX is based, tips the scales in the 1,300-kg range. The big battery is physically larger, too, of course. In the C-MAX, that means a raised floor in the cargo area, and correspondingly less capacity, although it must be said that with the rear seats folded down, it is still quite commodious for a compact. Extra weight has an effect on performance, too. With different driving modes available, and the knowledge that you have so many kilometres-worth of juice available that you might make it to your destination on battery-power alone, your natural inclination is to select EV mode. Your acceleration will be, let’s say, leisurely, and thank goodness for the instantaneous 117 lb-ft of torque. In non-EV mode that permits the gasoline engine to jump into the fray, acceleration is a bit closer to what most would consider to be in an acceptable range. And then, there is price. You didn’t think that ‘big-block’ battery wouldn’t cost a pretty penny, did you? The CMAX Energi costs $36,499, almost $10,000 more than the CMAX Hybrid. There is no C-MAX with a conventional drivetrain to compare them to, but a Focus compact sedan starts under $20,000.

24 RPM April / May 2014

It’s great to have the choice, isn’t it? But as much as possible, it is wise to try to predict how and where you will drive the hybrid you are looking at, so you aren’t spending more than you need to. No matter which Ford C-MAX you end up choosing, though, you’ll end up with a very economical little car.

So, at this point, we hope you are beginning to see that the latest technology entails some trade-offs, and deciding between the two C-MAXs, to say nothing of hybrid in general versus gasoline engine, needs some questions to be answered. First, there are the intangible factors, such as, do you want to feel good about using less gasoline, and be seen to be helping the environment? We are assuming that is the case, and a hybrid is the way you will go. The hybrid vehicle is today’s answer to the biggest issue with pure EVs – range anxiety. The engine is your insurance policy against being stranded with dead batteries. But EVs can have a range of over 100 km, depending on temperature, terrain, and a few other factors – which is plenty if your commute is under that distance and you know you can plug it in all day. But, if you have to, or want to, travel further between charges, then you are looking at hybrids. A PHEV like the C-MAX Energi, fully charged of course, behaves like an EV up to 34 km. Then, it behaves like the $10,000-cheaper C-MAX Hybrid. Not only that, the Energi behaves like the Hybrid almost all the time on the highway, in that the gasoline engine runs to help maintain highway speed. So it appears that the only time the Energi has an operating advantage over the Hybrid is in those first 34 km, assuming they are in slower urban traffic. Otherwise, the Hybrid – any non-plug-in hybrid – delivers the same efficiency, at a much lower price.

PERFORMANCE TIRE GUIDE I, like many others in this great big tire industry, have a job. The truth is that there are so many tires out there, it’s downright overwhelming at times. Especially when it comes to choosing performance tires. And that’s what people like me are here to help you do. We’re not here to help you find the perfect performance tire, we’re here to help you find the perfect performance tire for you. See, there are those two important words again. And they do make all the difference. Every person out there has different needs when it comes to their performance tires. And there are so many factors that go into finding that perfect tire for each one of them.

The Holy Grail... of Tires?

Driving style, driving habits, vehicle choice, road conditions, climate and even budget. These are all things to consider when trying to find that one ‘perfect for you’ performance tire. Obviously if you’re a more experienced and aggressive driver who likes to take your Porsche 911 GT3 RS to its limits, you’ll need a more aggressive tire than the person next to you at the red light in their bonestock Audi S4 who also enjoys a spirited drive but also needs tires that will last more than a couple of summer seasons and be affordable so that they can still pay for their kids’ Tae Kwon Do lessons. These two people just have different needs when it comes to choosing what performance tires they put on their cars. The same way they had different needs when it came to choosing what cars they put those performance tires on.

In many cases, our lifestyle plays the biggest role in deciding what car we drive. And that in turn, plays a big role in what performance tires we put on that car. Segment Competitors: GMC Yukon, Lincoln MKT, Toyota 4Runner, Acura RDX, Audi Q5, Hyundai Santa Fe The Skinny: The Buick Enclave received a facelift for 2013 and returns in 2014 relatively unchanged. The 3.6L V6 engine provides adequate power, the great looking interior is full of many of the latest safety and technology features, and on the outside a bold look complete with many luxurious styling cues round it out nicely. Pros: Great looks, tons of space, and all the bells and whistles you could possibly want. Cons: Fuel efficiency wasn’t the greatest, but that’s a sacrifice that comes with a larger vehicle. The new Tundra has a much better exterior look that puts it right up there with any of the North American pickups and a new interior sees increased functionality and refinement. Pros: Definitely one of the better looking pickup options available, plus inside it has all of the latest technology features which leaves you feeling like you’re behind the wheel of a luxury car. Cons: The same can probably be said for most pickups but the 5.7L V8 engine left a huge dent in our wallets at the gas station. The Verdict: It won’t be an easy task to dethrone the North American offerings, but the Tundra offers a great new look with increased refinement and functionality that will surely be enough to at least have buyers consider it when in the market for a pickup. 34 RPM April / May 2014

Segment Competitors: Lexus IS F, Audi RS 5, Porsche 911, Mercedes SL, BMW 6-Series. The Skinny: The XK series in general hasn’t changed much since the current generation was unveiled back in 2006, as it seems Jaguar is using the old adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This definitely proves true on the 2014 version of the XK-R that combines a fierce looking exterior with amazing performance attributes. Pros: The XK-R features amazing power, handles beautifully, and boasts a head turning exterior. Cons: It can probably be said for most cars in this class, but the rear seat is not particularly useful. The Verdict: This is an attention-grabbing sexy beast that performs just as good as it looks.

Segment Competitors: Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Buick Encore, VW Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5. The Skinny: The Jeep Compass received a facelift back in 2011 to closer resemble the Grand Cherokee, a comparison we don’t mind at all. While it may not be able to go off-road to the lengths its larger brother is able to, the solid 4x4 system will surely be enough to get you through a snowy winter. On-road, it is a peppy little SUV that’s perfect for an urban environment. Pros: While it did perform admirably during out test, we have to say its sharp look is what impressed us the most. Cons: While still somewhat 4x4 capable, you won’t be tackling any extreme terrain in this vehicle. The Verdict: If you’re looking for a small SUV that is practical and easy to drive, but can still comfortably get you through even the roughest of Canadian winters, then look no further.

Segment Competitors: Lexus IS350, Audi A4, Cadillac CTS, Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Acura TSX, Hyundai Genesis. The Skinny: The Q50 comes in as a brand-new vehicle and replaces the outgoing popular G sedan. It features the latest Infiniti design language with voluptuous curves everywhere. It has all of the latest safety and technology features and with a whopping 328 horsepower under the hood, you can be sure there will never be a dull moment behind the wheel. Pros: Is incredibly fun to drive, but yet is still able to remain practical with a comfortable rear seat and plenty of storage areas. Cons: The centre-mounted touch screen was a bit finicky. The Verdict: The combination of comfort, technology and performance makes the all-new Q50 a winner in our books. RPM April / May 2014 35

The only hint that anyone could ever have is the name “McLaren” shown just above. Yes it’s true, McLaren Toronto (Pfaff) brought out a pristine white P1 for all to adore. This $1.15-million (est.) supercar is the crème de la crème in the world of gearheads – even if you’re not a McLaren fan. As a limited production plug-in hybrid sports car (yes, you read right), it is a car which, when debuted in 2012 at the Paris Motor Show, sent shockwaves around the globe. Its design is timeless and yet modern, its power plant is one that boasts 903 horsepower (combined from the electric motor and twin-turbo V8) allowing it to launch from 0-62 mph in just 2.8-seconds and a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h). Every notable automotive journalist from Jeremy Clarkson to Chris Harris has dubbed the P1 as the pinnacle of all things supercar. Just one look at it and you can picture your life at its best with you behind the wheel, an open road sans speed limit, and not a care in the world. This is, after all, what supercars are built for - sheer automotive bliss!

n the weekend of March 22-23, car and mobile audio enthusiasts descended on Daytona Beach, Florida for the 28th Annual Spring Break Nationals. His Dodge Avenger is equipped with Hybrid Audio speakers, and more than 70 lucky attendees were given the chance to have a listen. I was invited by Moe Sabourin, Director of Operations for IASCA (International Auto Sound Challenge Association), to come to SBN and judge the Sound Quality competition. This was truly an honour and a privilege for me. This event features some of the most amazing and well-known competition vehicles in the industry. been to a car audio competition in the last few years, the latest craze is demo builds. Imagine an entire PA system built into a car. Bass, midrange and high frequencies capable of being reproduced at concert level volumes – all from the compact confines of a car or van. Insanely loud doesn’t describe them well enough. Turning to SPL competition, dB Drag Racing and the IASCA dB League were on-hand to see builds vie for the highest possible SPL score within the confines of the sanctioning bodies’ rules. One of the many highlights of the weekend was the Astro Van owned by Craig Butler, setting a new dBDRA world record of 182.1dB! The most amazing part was that you could barely hear the system from outside the van – proof that all the energy was being kept inside for maximum performance. Absolutely stunning! Paul Papadeas, the organizer of the Spring Break Nationals, has turned the event into more than a competition; it is also an industry trade show. Manufacturers including JL Audio, Metra, Phoenix Gold, Audio Control and Mobile Solutions offered industry attendees training seminars to give them a behindthe-scenes look at their product, how it works and how to integrate it into customers’ vehicles for maximum performance. Each March, the Spring Break Nationals is a great way to kick off the competition season. New products, new builds and a chance to see old friends, combined with sunny and warm weather, offers a great way to shake the winter blues and get your car audio adrenalin pumping!

The Little Mustang That Could Story and photos by Cam Hutchins

T

his 2012 Kona Blue Mustang V6 is lucky to even be part of the story because a V6 Mustang is not the type of car the VP of Mopac Auto Supply would typically drive...especially since they are one of the country’s biggest go-fast parts places. As fortunes turn, this Mustang was no longer wanted by Rick Duda’s daughter, so he took it over, figuring it would make a good grocery getter/winter beater. Before he got the car, his daughter went out to the Friday night street-legal races at Mission Raceway Park and laid down a respectable run in the high 14s. Dropping in a cold air induction system and new Borla axle-back exhaust made the car a bit more respectable as a daily driver...but somehow things got sideways and maybe influenced by too many David and Goliath stories. The Beauty started to become the beast with a complete Eibach Pro one-inch lowering springs suspension package that gave it the right stance. Looking good but needing matching “Go,” a base model polished Procharger P1SC supercharger system was put in with BBK ceramic coated long-tube headers and BBK X-pipe with catalytic convertors and Vibrant resonators. Tuning Mechanic Nick Duda got in contact with Procharger to let them know that some modifications were needed for this system to work properly on a car with an automatic transmission, as some clearance issues came up. Even with the stock rear end, the jump in performance was astounding, with mid 12s, and many of the V8 guys were starting to take notice. The car was now equipped with Ford Racing Boss 302 “Laguna Seca” wheels , but the drag radials were mounted on the stock V6 Mustang wheels, which really made the car’s smaller powerplant stand out. 46 RPM April / May 2014

power from the factory was 305 horsepower, and it was now in the 550-horsepower range. The next modification was the Snow Performance Stage 2 Water/Meth injection system, and the runs got down to high 11s before the season ended. The Snow system is set up to add a 50/50 mix of water and methanol and starts injecting once it hits a certain boost level. For this car, it is programmed to come on once the boost hits 5 to 6 psi, and then feathers in until 8 to 9 psi where it is fully engaged. The mix is injected into the inlet pipe after the intercooler and it significantly cools the mix and the methanol definitely adds to the party!

Lack of rear gearing prompted a switch to a Shelby GT500 rear end available from the Ford Racing catalogue as a complete drop-in conversion with carbon clutches, Posi and a better 3.73 ratio instead of the stock 3.31 ratio. After a few more low 12-second runs, a smaller pulley was added to the supercharger, giving an increase in boost from 8 lb to 13 lb. The

Other appearance changes were HID headlights and driving lights. The interior is pretty good for these V6 cars, so the big change to the interior is the changing out of the “ugly” shifter bezel to a better looking Hurst shifter bezel. The transmission is a stock six-speed unit that has its shift point changed to shift at the exact peak in power, but is otherwise completely stock. The fuel pump is also stock, but the fuel injectors have been upgraded to the Ford Racing 47 lb/hr fuel injectors, and they were added after

with the upgraded Kenne Bell Supercharger. Driver/Tuner Nick Duda admits he caught a better light, but at the end of 1320 feet, the Super Snake just snuck past the “little V6 that could.” In a post-race discussion, a great deal of surprise was expressed by the Shelby owner who was unaware of the vehicle’s V6 powerplant. Although Duda is a mechanic, he says the list of parts they put on their Mustang is easily available and would be able to be put on by a talented owner...but the key is the tuning. The car has to be set up on the dyno with the aid of computers and some knowledge to get the true potential out of these cars, and there are many shops specializing in this...but Mopac has a proven track record. In the future, or with other V6 enthusiasts, greater power is just a matter of a larger Procharger head unit and bigger fuel injectors. Add a rollbar and some more dyno time at Mopac to see what is the true limit of this little grocery getter. the Procharger system, as the supercharger system is sold as a tuner package for more or less street use. It comes with the supercharger piping and intercooler, but you have to swap out the injectors to accommodate the additional power. The intercooler is painted black to further the “sleeper” look. Other than tacking on a few performance parts, the SCT tuner with Mopac custom tuning is key to get the most out of the V6 Mustang. But the biggest limitation is the fact that track safety rules state if you start running quicker than 11.50, a rollbar is required, and that is a not going to happen...for now. Although the time slips show the whole story, lots has to be said for showing up on the tires you are going to race with, and going up against a 2009 Shelby GT500 Super Snake

With just 16 cars built, the company was taken over by Frazer-Nash. Michael Bristow revived the Invicta name for the third time, calling it the S1 and building a very expensive 600-horsepower Ford V8-powered sports car capable of 320 kilometres per hour (200 mph). Building the world’s first one-piece carbon fibre sports car added considerable expense to the build cost. The S1 is ranked the 79th fastest car in the semi-elliptical springs on each corner. Demand is strong for ’50s and ’60s Ferraris and Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwings By Nigel Matthews

A

utomobiles manufactured in small quantities might make them somewhat rare, but not necessarily valuable.

Supply and demand are key in today’s collector car world, and recently, the big demand has been for specific Ferraris from the ’50s and ’60s, and Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupes and roadsters. During the month of January, while attending the auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona, I witnessed the sale of a sad-looking 1956 Mercedes Gullwing in need of a complete restoration for $1.8 million, and a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS which had experienced an engine fire and looking rather grim, having been untouched and abandoned in a garage, selling for over $2 million.

The cars were powered by an engine that used a previously developed Riley engine block. The very advanced 100-horsepower overhead-valve V8s were fitted with two Zenith carburetors. The 2,849-cubic-centimetre engines had triple camshafts and were capable of cruising comfortably at 145 km/h. Customers had a choice of gearboxes — either an Armstrong-Siddeley pre-selector box or a four-speed ZF manual, driving a rear-axle fitted with a David Brown worm final drive which rotated the 19 wire wheels. The total Autovia production amounted to 29 saloons — one Special Saloon pictured here was the 1937 London Motor Show car — and five limousines. Records are lacking for the remaining cars.

The same could not be said for a 1937 Autovia Special Saloon that sold at an auction in England a number of years ago. Autovia Cars Ltd. began in 1935 with a capital investment from Victor Riley of the famous car manufacturing dynasty.

The new marque failed to make any headway in an overcrowded marketplace, resulting in Victor Riley’s dream coming to and end in 1938, when Riley and Autovia went into receivership.

His plan was to open a subsidiary company and new factory to produce a luxury car. Riley’s new venture was ambitious and even included a chauffeur’s school.

This rare one-off Autovia sold for a mere $52,000.

Autovia offered three body types: a sports saloon, a special saloon and a limousine. One could also purchase a rolling chassis and have one of the many coachbuilders of the day build a body of one’s choice.

Airaid Filter Tune-Up Kit Airaid is now offering a Filter Tune-up Kit that is perfect for cleaning out your air filters without damaging the gauze filter media at all. Using the kit, your filters can be cleaned in three easy steps. First, let the Cleaning Solution soak on the filter for about ten minutes and then rinse. Secondly, allow the air filter to air dry, and finally carefully apply the Performance Filter Oil which will add the additional line of defence against dirt without restricting airflow.
