Ford of Europe Developing Self-Parking Car Ford of Europe has begun developing a new automated parking technology that will allow drivers to park with only the push of a button from either outside or inside the car. The technology will be called Fully Assisted Parking Aid and it will control steering, gear selection, and forward and reverse motion in order to enable push-button parking. Ford Engineers are using advances made in existing technologies like Active Park Assist and Ford Powershift transmission to create the next generation of parking technology. The Fully Assisted Parking Aid is able to detect a suitable parking space using sensors, and once that is done the driver activates the system by putting the car in neutral and pushing a button from either outside via a remote control or inside the vehicle. From there the system would take full control of steering, forward and reverse motion, and braking. The driver is required to hold down the button the whole time the vehicle is parking, which allows them to cancel the manoeuvre at any time. The Jaguar designers led by Ian Callum have created a sensational sports car to look at. In his words, “Every aspect of a sports car, dimensionally, allows us to create something that is visually exciting; visceral as well as physical. To me the definition of sports car design is being fit for purpose, wrapping up the occupants and mechanicals in the most exciting, beautiful and sensual package possible with no unnecessary surfaces or adornment.” Well-put, and enough said. I don’t think that many enthusiasts wouldn’t want this car, just on its looks alone. In the burnt-orange metallic, called Firesand, our tester was sprayed with, the F-Type is stunning. Of course, there is so much that goes into making a great sports car, and the F-Type has all the bases covered. As with most cars, there is a 12 At The Wheel RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

A fully-manual transmission is not offered, unlike most of its competitors, but the eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission will make you forget that you might have wanted one. As part of a drivetrain tuned for ‘optimal response to allow for ultra-fast transient torque delivery’ (read, athletic reflexes), this transmission does everything to encourage and reward spirited driving. Once it has shifted into second gear, a locking clutch bypasses the torque convertor, creating a direct mechanical link between the engine and the rear wheels. In order to maintain the car’s balance during a downshift, the transmission will instruct the engine management system to automatically blip the throttle to match engine revs.

Of course, the transmission can sense how the car is being driven, via measuring acceleration, braking and cornering forces, keeping it in just the right gear. Choose Sport Mode, and it delivers shorter shifts and holds the ratios at higher revs for longer. Or, the driver can just shift gears manually, via the paddle shifters. It’s all good, that’s for sure.

rates. The system continuously monitors driver inputs and the attitude of the car on the road, adjusting damper rates accordingly up to 500 times per second to optimize stability and agility. The Dynamic Mode also provides firmer damper rates through the Adaptive Dynamics system. Whew....there are a lot of “Actives” and “Dynamics” on the F-Type, but there is one more we have to mention, and that would be Active Exhaust, which is simply a baffle in the system that opens under hard acceleration, providing the most gloriously rorty sounds to emit from the exhaust on upshifts, downshifts, and in abrupt throttle-off situations. The blat-blat soundtrack will have you seeking out tunnels and shifting up and down as much as you can. Inside, the F-Type is more all-business function than overly-stylish form, as befits a small space that the driver has to be well-connected to, ergonomically. The general design philosophy is similar to that of Jaguar’s performance sedans, especially in the display screen and HVAC controls, and it is good to see a real gearshift lever rising out of the centre console, rather than the rotary knob that is found in many other Jags. It allows manual shifting in Sport mode, although that is a bit redundant with the orange alloy paddles behind the wheel, the use of which allows the driver to keep both hands on the wheel. There is enough room even for those over six-feet tall, especially with the very supportive Performance Seat option like our tester had. The occupants had better have only a few pieces of soft luggage, though, as the trunk is very small. The soft top can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 50 km/h.

A mechanical limited-slip differential is fitted as standard to the V6-powered S; it’s great to see a traditional, non-electronics-and-brakes solution to There is another F-Type model which we haven’t mentioned, and that is maintaining traction at the limit of grip in a corner. the V8 S. Yes, you can have your F-Type with a supercharged V8 that generates 495 horsepower, 0-to-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, and a top speed Most of the world’s best performance cars have a “magic” button or two that (electronically limited) of 300 km/h. We haven’t driven it on the street, but the driver can push to change the character of the car from just a regular we did on the track at Mission Raceway near Vancouver, right after the S performance car into something you could drive all day on a test track, with V6, and the experience was enlightening. and in the case of the F-Type S, one only has to move the Dynamic Mode toggle towards the ‘checkered flag’ label behind it, and the cat becomes a different breed. All of a sudden, the driver obtains sharpened throttle response, increased steering weighting, gear changes performed more quickly and higher up the rev range, and a raised threshold for stability control intervention. Dynamic Mode also prevents automatic upshifts when the gearbox is shifted into manual mode, which means you can run the engine at less-than-full throttle all the way to redline, and still make the decision on when to shift. On the other hand, there is an Eco button which, among other things, provides Stop/Start functionality for lower fuel consumption in urban driving. There is more. The S is fitted with the Jaguar Adaptive Dynamics suspension damping system that controls vertical body movement, roll and pitch The V6 was a familiar quantity except for pushing to its limits, and it was very balanced and capable in all facets of getting around the track, to say nothing of being darned fast. The V8 was heavier and even faster, but less nimble and easy to drive. No surprise with any of that, I suppose, but the V6 S has plenty of power and all-round capability, and would be my choice if I was buying one of these. And that is something I would very happily do, as Jaguar has really scored with the F-Type. It is beautiful, capable, luxurious, and endowed with all the technology expected these days, and it puts Jaguar right into the thick of the market for premium two-seat roadsters. After 40 years, it is good to see you back in the sports car business, Jaguar. 14 At The Wheel RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

ROAD TEST - BMW M6 GRAN COUPE Gran Coupé its very special look. Other distinctive styling elements include a carbon-fibre roof panel, quad exhaust tips, side fender grilles, gold-painted Brembo brake calipers, and a rear diffuser panel. The M6 Gran Coupe looks ready for the track. The M upgrade continues inside the spacious passenger compartment. M Sport bucket seats are wrapped in supple Merino leather, as is the dash, and both feature exposed, contrast stitching. Alcantara has been used for the headliner and to wrap the steering wheel. Carbon fibre trim is used in abundance throughout the tidy cabin. The view from the driver’s seat is uncluttered and the layout of the various switchgear and controls places everything within easy reach of both hand and eye. The four-plus-one seating arrangement allows the M6 Gran Coupé to carry four adults in luxury, or five in a pinch. The ride is firm, but pleasant, and enthusiasts will appreciate how well the car communicates with the driver through the razor sharp steering and form-fitting bucket seats. Big, meaty, low-profile tires grip the pavement with authority, but prove wide enough to suck you into the deep grooves left behind by years of heavy truck traffic. Luckily, in my region, these annoying depressions seem to be a right lane only phenomenon.

The M6 Gran Coupé is stylish, sophisticated, and extremely wellengineered. Enthusiast drivers will relish the fact that it delivers a high-performance driving experience second to none, but is still able to offer the level of refinement expected in a high-end European luxury automobile.

Handling is surprisingly neutral for such a large car, and there is almost no evidence of body roll during spirited cornering maneuvers. The M6 Gran Coupé is very nimble and is capable of delivering a driving experience similar to that of a highend sports and GT car. What makes it so special however, is the fact that it is equally at home shuttling business types to and fro in the lap of luxury. The BMW Gran Coupé is one of the prettiest cars in its class, but in my humble opinion, it looks even more attractive after receiving the M treatment. The front and rear of the car are all business. An aggressive combination of spoilers, intakes and aerodynamic aides hint at the performance potential of this striking beast. We’d still rather have the old-style push buttons for the most often-used functions like radio band and station selection, rather than having to command the HMI to do our bidding with a few different twists and pushes. With this all-new generation, the complete Skyactiv drivetrain is onboard, in both the 2.0- and 2.5-litre configurations. The GT had the 2.5 engine, and with 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, it moves out quite smartly. Behind it was the only transmission available at this time, a smooth six-speed automatic with Sport mode and paddle shifters for manual operation. No manual transmission is offered, though, which is odd since the bigger Mazda6 does have it with this engine. In any case, the 3 GT is rated at 7.5L / 100 km fuel efficiency, but we saw about 8.6 in light-footed urban driving. Highway consumption is claimed to be 5.4L.

The GT’s chassis design and set-up does its bit to keep up with the capabilities of the drivetrain. Suspension is McPherson strut up front – the usual set-up in a compact - and out back is a not-so-usual independent multi-link design that is the best design for high-speed handling on uneven roads. Steering is variable-assist rack-and-pinion, and the whole lot borrows some alignment settings from the MX-5 sports car, with predictably crisp steering feel being the result.

Our tester was nicely equipped, but without the advanced active safety equipment (and, incidentally, satellite radio) that is part of the optional Technology Package. Still, we want to describe what Mazda has made available for the 3 GT, because it is leading edge for the compact segment. Available in the i-Activsense safety group are Smart City Brake Support (which will stop the car at low speeds if a solid object is detected), Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Front Lighting (that turns the headlights into the corner), and High Beam Control (which automatically switches the headlights up and down). Standard equipment on all trim levels includes anti-lock brakes, Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control.

n the hyper-competitive compact car segment, it helps to have at least one unique selling proposition, something that a prospective buyer, and ultimately the driver, can point to and say that “my car has these attributes.” In the case of the latest Mazda 3, one could argue that there are a few key attributes to which someone could point. High style is right up there. So is ground-breaking drivetrain technology, and all the latest safety gear, too. Plus, it is just plain fun to drive. The design of the new generation 3 is attractive in an almost exotic way, quite unique in the segment. Mazda calls it Kodo “soul of motion” design, and the designers say there are three key elements in the look – speed, tension and allure. The promotional literature the public sees calls it moodelevating and revitalizing. No matter what you call it, its stance is just right on its great-looking 18-inch wheels, and it is shorter, wider and lower than the last generation, and maybe every other compact car, too.

The Technology Package also includes something called i-ELOOP, a regenerative braking system that harnesses kinetic energy during braking to power electrical systems, leaving 100 percent of the engine’s power for propulsion, and making for better fuel Inside, the GT is very at- efficiency. The dashboard is driver-oriented, with the tachometer located in the centre of the instrument panel, like any good sporting car. The GT has the Active Driving Display, a small clear plastic screen that flips up from the top of the dashboard, and displays your speed, (as does a digital readout within the tach) and route guidance. While the centre stack has the usual climate controls, conspicuously absent are any of the usual controls for the audio system. FIRST DRIVE - CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY

Living Up to Expectations

The all-new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray Story by Gerry Frechette, photos courtesy of GM Canada he introduction of a new Corvette is a momentous occasion for auto enthusiasts. After all, this is only the seventh all-new model since the beginning in 1953. But unlike the C4, C5, and C6 generations before it, there is a familiar moniker added to the official model name of the new C7, and that is Stingray (one word), last seen on the C3 in 1976. The ‘63-’67 C2 cars were Sting Rays.

T

Under that provocative skin lies an all-new aluminum frame structure that is 45 kilograms lighter, and much stiffer, than the previous-generation car. The result is a frame that is so strong, no structural reinforcements are needed, even for the convertible, and the improvement in structural integrity is immediately apparent while cornering or driving on a less-than-smooth road. The use of carbon fibre (hood and coupe roof) and carbon fibre-composite material (fenders, doors, rear quar-

As the Corvette grew older, so did its drivers, and Chevrolet realized it had to get younger people interested in the car. That, and its iconic status as a leading-edge vehicle, meant that the C7 had to break new ground, in every way. From its design, to its engineering, technology, and yes, quality, it is a big leap forward. In fact, the C7 shares only two parts with the previous-generation Corvette. It incorporates an all-new frame structure and chassis, a new powertrain and supporting technologies, and completely new exterior and interior designs. That exterior design is, of course, the first thing anyone sees, and it draws a lot of attention. I heard several people say that it looks better in the flesh than in photos, and those were my thoughts, too. While the last couple of generations had clean, uncomplicated lines, the new one is quite ‘busy’ – like a jet fighter is, with various geometric shapes. And for the same reason, too – aerodynamic performance. Low drag is one of the primary goals of any car design, and a car capable of high speeds needs downforce too. Functional exterior elements include a new grille/radiator arrangement, hood vents and front fender cove vents, all from lessons learned in the GT racing program. So, form follows function here, and one could call the Corvette a very purposeful-looking car. We still have to get used to the rear-3/4 windows, something not seen since the C1 in the 1950s. 20 At The Wheel RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

ter panels and rear hatch panel) result in light weight, 50/50 weight distribution, and a very potent power-to-weight ratio. The power part of that equation is supplied by a new 6.2-litre LT1 V8 (remember the LT1 small-block from 1970?). This latest pushrod engine pumps out 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, that latter number matching the 7.0-litre LS7 engine from the 2013 Corvette Z06 from 1,000 to 4,000 rpm. Advanced technologies such as direct injection, Active Fuel Management, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system combine to make this the most powerful (and fuel efficient) standard Corvette engine ever.

FIRST DRIVE - CHEVROLET CORVETTE STINGRAY something that previous Corvettes haven’t exactly led the industry in. It just seemed that they were always a step or two behind the standards of the day in terms of materials, design, and fit-and-finish.

The rest of the drivetrain is no-less impressive. The manual transmission is a new seven-speed manual with Active Rev Matching (that can be disengaged by the driver who knows how to do it with the feet), while the torque-converter automatic is a six-speed with paddle shifters, and adjustable shift feel and shift points. I have driven both versions, and while I’d have to go with the manual, the automatic is a worthy link between engine and enthusiast driver. Both transmissions are mounted in the rear, attached to the differential, for better weight distribution. There are two exhaust systems available, both offering greater airflow through larger pipes, and both being variable. The standard one has valves that contribute to greater refinement at cruising speeds when the engine is operating in fuel-saving V4 mode. The optional one has valves that throw the system all-but wide open for that “straight pipes” sound.

Well, we can say that the C7 has rectified all that with an interior that compares favourably with any other in this class. All models feature a fully-wrapped cabin, where every surface is covered with premium, soft-touch materials, including Napa leather, aluminum, carbon fibre and micro-suede, depending on the trim level. The seats are well-bolstered, multi-adjustable and comfortable. And, the Coupe’s roof panel is removable, as before. Altogether, the C7’s roomy interior will accommodate everything from city driving to highspeed work, keeping the driver comfortable and informed in a quality environment up to the standards set by other high-end GM cars. The C7 has a Driver Mode Selector via a rotary knob near the shifter, which allows drivers to optimize the car for their driving preference and road conditions via five settings: Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport and Track. Up to 12 performance variables – including the likes of the feel of the steering, the characteristics of the suspension, and the appearance of the cluster display, to name only a few – can be calibrated to the driver’s taste.

The C7’s chassis and suspension are designed to take advantage of Some of the numbers quoted by Chevrolet include 0-to-100 km/h the lighter, stiffer structure. Canadian Car and Truck of the Year entries descend on Niagara Falls Story by Russell Purcell, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

The category winners will be announced at a press conference in Toronto on December 3rd. Immediately following this announcement the comparative test data and vote results are posted to the he 2013 edition of the Automobile Journalists Association of AJAC web site (www.ajac.ca) for use by consumers as a resource buying guide. Canada’s (AJAC) “TestFest” event is now in the books.

T

In late October, Canada’s top automotive writers and bloggers make their annual pilgrimage to the Niagara region of Ontario to compare and evaluate the best new vehicle offerings for the coming model year. This year a total of 58 vehicles in 12 categories were entered into the competition with hopes of securing a win in their respective categories, as well as a chance to be named either the overall Car of the Year, or Utility Vehicle of the Year.

All category winners will then be eligible to compete for either the 2014 Canadian Car of the Year or 2014 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards. Those awards are announced in February during the first media day of the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

Over the course of five days, journalist members test-drive the latest crop of new vehicle models on a solo-type handling course, as well as on predetermined routes incorporating real-world streets and highways, in the Niagara Falls area. Truck and SUV entries are also tested on a carefully-crafted off-road handling course.

Best New Small Car (Under $21,000) •Mazda3 •Nissan Versa Note •Toyota Corolla Prediction: Mazda3 – The Corolla is much improved, but so is the Mazda3. It is also fun to drive.

Event organizers assign each journalist to a minimum of three category teams, and the participants are required to drive all of the entries in a category for a minimum of 30 minutes each. Team members are issued a detailed rating form, comprising a carefully selected list of evaluation parameters that include performance factors such as acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, and manoeuvrability, but also items like ride comfort, safety features and cargo capacity. Each parameter is rated using a prescribed 0 - 10 rating scale. For the journalist’s vote to count, he/she must also complete an entire category on the same day. This will ensure that the test results are sound and relevant to both the consumer and the respective manufacturers. The ballots are then tabulated by accounting firm KPMG and the results remain confidential - even from AJAC - until the awards press conferences, wherein the category and overall winners are announced. 24 At The Wheel RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

ROAD TEST - VOLKSWAGEN CC

Comfort Coupé

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

T

he Volkswagen CC (Comfort Coupé) is based on the venerable mid-size Passat, but features a chopped roofline in an effort to give this rather interesting sedan a very coupe-like profile. Interestingly, the slinky CC offers more headroom front and rear, despite being slightly shorter and lower than the traditional Passat sedan, but all other interior and exterior dimensions are slightly smaller on the CC. The car’s aerodynamic body was revised front and rear for 2013 to bring it up-to-date with the company’s current design portfolio. Bi-Xenon headlights, LED taillights, and LED daytime running lights are now part of the long list of standard equipment, and the end result gives the CC a more upmarket look when compared to rival offerings.

2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder which offers 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. My test vehicle was fitted with the latter, and although I found it to be a little noisy at highway speeds, I never found myself wanting more power. The turbo spools up quickly and gives the CC rather athletic performance for such a small engine. The six-speed, dual-clutch (DSG) transmission proved to be a smooth operator, and I was able to navigate up and down the gear ratios to attempt to extract the most driving pleasure possible from the engine’s wide power band. All CC models utilize a strut-type, sport-tuned suspension, and electro-mechanical steering with variable assistance based on vehicle speed. Handling is far from sporty, but the steering is precise and the ride composed. Stopping power is impressive, as there are big disc brakes at all four corners, backed up by ABS.

Most of the surface materials and trim pieces are pleasing to both the touch and eye, but the taut, leather seating is rather firm for my liking. There is now seating for five, but the rear compartment is still best suited for two if plans call for extended travel. The front seats offer sufficient room for all but the tallest folks, but the rear passenger compartment is best reserved for small adults and children as the sloping roofline and narrow door openings make ingress and egress a bit of a challenge. I managed to smack my head, but at six-foot, two inches tall, I am not designed to be a rear seat passenger in many mid-size offerings. Once seated, however, I did find sufficient room for my big feet, and the seating position was comfortable and supportive. I would have to duck down and forward to take in the view, however. L.A. AUTO SHOW BMW i8

Los Angeles International Auto Show Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

Audi S3 Audi showed the new A3 series in L.A., with four different models on stage, led by the 290-hp S3 sport compact sedan (A3 sedan and convertible, eTron plug-in hybrid were the others) with all the expected performance upgrades. Expect to see it available in the second half of 2014.

T

he recent L.A. Auto Show was somewhat unusual in that the “Detroit Three” domestic manufacturers had little new to unveil in production vehicles, and that the various concept vehicles very nearly matched the number of new production vehicles shown. For that matter, many of the concepts, as usual, looked ready for showrooms, but there were a few that were clearly styling exercises. PRODUCT REVIEW - DRIFT HD GHOST CAMERA the camera, choose the operating mode, change settings, and preview and download their recordings. The camera comes with a rechargeable remote control unit which allows the user to operate the HD Ghost on the fly. This two-button unit can be fitted with an included Velcro strap so that you can wear it on your wrist or attach it to your gear, and its buttons are large enough to permit operation while wearing gloves. The two buttons also incorporate control identifiers so that you can operate them by touch without removing them the device from your pocket, or taking your eyes off the task ahead. The remote has an effective range of five metres.

Product Test: Drift HD Ghost action camera

I found the remote control to be particularly useful as I use POV cameras to record footage of automobiles in action. This usually requires the camera to be mounted outside the vehicle in precarious positions using suction cup mounts. Having the remote control, I was able to reduce the number of stops I had to make during my filming sessions, which is a good thing, as these breaks in the action usually take place along the shoulder of some pretty dangerous roads and highways. Having the ability to check on the operational status of the camera while still safely belted in to the driver’s seat was very handy, not to mention a great stress reliever.

Review and photos by Russell Purcell

The remote uses a series of coloured LED lights to alert the operator to the operational status of the camera at any given time. With a quick glance at the remote’s flashing lights, the operator is able to determine the current mode of the camera and whether it’s recording or not. The camera features a small status light just aft of the lens which will illuminate green when the camera is powered up, and red when recording is in progress. Having both these visual alert systems should help ensure that you do not miss any of the action.

Point-of-View cameras allow athletes and sportsmen to relive the action, and share an experience with their friends, fans, and family. The giant in this field is GoPro, largely due to the immense amount of money they throw into marketing their products, but there are a host of other POV cameras on the market that match, if not beat, GoPro’s cameras for certain applications.

The camera utilizes a dedicated clip mount that screws to the base of the camera unit. The clip is formed in high-density plastic and can be quickly mated to a variety of mounts with one handed operation. It operates much like the buckle on a backpack waist strap, and appears to maintain a very sound and secure connection.

As an automotive journalist, I have sampled half-a-dozen different camera systems over the past few years, and eventually I caved and bought a GoPro Hero2. The camera system proved capable and reliable, but in order to make it work for my needs I had to purchase a lot of extra mounts, housings and accessories. The Hero2 has served me well, but at a recent event it left me in a bind, as the sound quality from both the integrated microphone and the external accessory unit I was using failed to deliver the sound quality I needed for my project. The footage was crisp and sharp, but the sound was horrendous. It became apparent that I was going to have to upgrade my gear to remedy this situation, as one of my new clients has an unquenchable thirst for quality video.

I chose to remove the clip mount and utilize the threaded tripod mount that has been incorporated into the HD Ghost’s base. Unlike the other camera systems, I didn’t have to source a special accessory piece or hardware to mount the HD Ghost unit to the suction cup mounting systems I prefer to use for my application. The camera remained secure throughout the duration of my shoot, and due to the low profile of the camera, it cut through the air better, reducing drag, wind turbulence, and vibration.

The HD Ghost offers almost three hours of recording life when operating in full HD After exploring the marketplace, I narrowed my search to include the latest mode. What is even more impressive is the fact that I managed to get this from GoPro (Hero3), Contour, and Drift. After consulting with some peers type of battery life while filming in very cool temperatures (5-8°C). and conducting some research, I managed to get my hands on an evaluation unit of the Drift HD Ghost camera from a local distributor, Launch I was immediately impressed by the footage from this setup. Toyota Celica (TRD Supercharged) Story and photos by Giancarlo Pawelec

B

ack in 1970, the Toyota Motor Company introduced a coupe model known as the Celica, which would propel the brand into the affordable sports car market. Surely, the famed 2000GT was the car to have at the time, but for those seeking something more reasonable, this was it. Fast forward into the modern age at the turn of the millennium and the launch of the 7th generation came with much praise. By this time, the Celica badge had already taken accolades in the World Rally Championship, winning two manufacturer’s championships and other wins in various motorsport series. For the owner of this red coupe, Tom Wilga of Welland, Ontario, Canada, the choice was made simply due to its sheer sleek looks, which nobody can deny. Surely his newest toy would not be the fastest in the local car scene or handle like it was on rails, but it was a platform which few have ever dived into. The once sleek, yet simple, design of the stock Celica didn’t last long for Wilga. Adding a touch of flare and aggressiveness to the coupe is a full 36 Speed & Sound RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

In case you haven’t noticed by now, the engine bay of this Celica is spotless to say the least and all thanks to a custom wire-tuck which as everyone knows is no easy feat. Allowing the estimated 300 horsepower to transfer to the ground is all thanks to Quaife Helical limited-slip differentials; otherwise Wilga would be spinning one chicken strip on the road. If you thought that bling was out, think again. A set of 19 by 8.5-inch Varrstoen Track 200 Series wheels rapped in Sumitomo rubber provide a great look to the already stunning Celica coupe. Tucked just behind are upgraded brakes with MSport rotors and Hawk pads for added stopping power when rolling hard. The stance of this beauty is possible with a selection of suspension goods that would make any Toyota fan proud, consisting of a DGR Street coilovers packaged with Bilstein sway bar links, TRD sway bars (front and back), and a stiff Rod Millen strut bar for lateral rigidity. Now the Celica is not only fulfilled in the looks-good department and powerful, but can handle it as originally intended by its Japanese creators. Kaminari aero kit and a Brashboy lip spoiler on the shaved trunk. Some might cringe at the sight of its Decah Lamborghini-style doors (especially as that fad passed on years ago), but it suits the wedge-shape design cue of this 7th gen. For added personalization, the front headlights were treated to a yellow tint and does it ever suit it.

In the cockpit of this boosted and fitted Celica is a revamp of the factory interior, something to which Wilga maintained a focused eye. The concept was not to be radical as most builds in the scene, but rather to keep things more of an OEM+ look. The entire dash and centre console

The head also got special treatment by way of MWR Stage 2 valves, springs, and retainers to handle the high revs. Creating the jump in power, and what truly sets this Celica apart from the pack, is a custom-fitted TRD supercharger, but the greatness doesn’t stop there. IASCA, dBDRA, MECA and USACi, the sanctioning bodies for all the car audio competition series, decided to join forces to create a single and unified World Finals event this year. On the weekend of October 19-20, hundreds of competitors gathered at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama to do battle for ‘World Champion’ status in Sound Quality, Installation and SPL competition. I spent much of my weekend working with Moe Sabourin of IASCA. Celise Harris, the Marketing Director for the dB Drag Racing Association, quarterbacked much of the organization of the event, and she did an amazing job. Just like a golf club, with a limited number of members being able to enjoy the use of a first-class facility? It’s a concept that has been proven in the United States and overseas, and the first steps have been taken to create just such a facility in the South Okanagan region of British Columbia. The South Okanagan Motorsports Corporation has been formed to develop and operate what will be called Area 27, just north of Osoyoos, B.C. on 230 acres of land controlled by the Osoyoos Indian Band. Three of the directors of the corporation are noted race drivers Jacques Villeneuve (hence the number 27 in the name of the project) who will design the track, Trevor Seibert of Williams

There is a definite time line involved with the membership, approval and construction aspects of the project, and essentially, once a certain number of members are signed up, that triggers a vote by the Osoyoos band, and actual construction could start. The project has the strong support of Band Chief Clarence Louie, whose forward thinking has resulted in a beautiful resort area near Osoyoos called Spirit Ridge, which includes a hotel and condo development, a golf course, a winery (Nk’Mip Cellars) and much more. A motorsport country club would be a perfect addition to these resort amenities. The plan is to build a clubhouse from the outset, to be followed by garages where members could park their cars and businesses could locate, and eventually a condo/hotel development right at the track. Already, site surveying has begun, since it will all start with pavement being laid down. The main goal at the moment is to finalize the track design and generate a three-dimensional model of the site. Villeneuve, having raced on all the top tracks in the world, promises a fun and challenging layout meeting international FIA Level 2 standards, that will be equally suited for members to enjoy their performance cars, and for organized road racing events, of which SOMC would like to run three or four each season. Other uses could include corporate events, driver training, and filming. A karting track is also planned. All going well, with the initial threshold of memberships being met and approval from the Osoyoos band, the Federal Seibert, Villeneuve and Drossos Government, and ASN discuss the first concept drawing Canada FIA, actual con- of the Area 27 track. struction could begin by summer of 2014, with the first laps being turned in 2015.

It’s an exciting time for driving enthusiasts and motorsport fans in B.C., and if you are interested in knowing more about the project or in becoming a member, check out the Area 27 website at www. area27.ca for all the details, plus regular news updates.

A Rare Find Looking back at Turbine-powered concepts

Gary Fedyk’s Panther Pink 1970 RT 440 Six Pack Shaker Hood

Story and Photos by Cam Hutchins t seems every other day, another unbelievable “Barn Find” emerges to whet the IFinding car lover’s appetite so that no private property will soon be safe from prying eyes. a Panther Pink Challenger with big block and 4-speed may be the stuff of legends...but how about finding it in the parkade of an apartment 1.5 blocks away from the beach in Waikiki?

The Lower Mainland’s Gary Fedyk had been looking for a muscle car to restore and had for a while decided the E Body Cuda or Challenger was the perfect car for cruises and long weekend drives. The long odyssey that Fedyk has been on with this 1970 Panther Pink Challenger is more about preserving one of the coolest Challengers possible, than in restoring a weekend cruiser. In 2005, Fedyk and friends were in Hawaii, and while the friends were on a long walk, they got a little lost and wandered down the back alleys between apartment buildings. Spying the forlorn flat black Challenger with the pistol shifter four-speed and a liberal coating of dust, they rushed back to tell Fedyk of their discovery. Upon seeing the flat black paint and awful condition it did not look like the car for him. They opened the rally hood and noticed the pink paint which also matched the pink paint of the floor boards, evident since the carpet had been removed. Writing down the VIN and the numbers off the fender tag, he soon found out FM3 meant it was supposed to be the now very desirable Panther Pink. Fedyk thought it was cool but not the right car for him. Once back home, he contacted a local Mopar expert who quickly decoded the tag and informed Fedyk it was a true Panther Pink car with a 440 six pack, and 4-speed manual transmission. But wait, it gets better; this car is super rare as only five cars with 440 motors and shaker hoods got painted Panther Pink, and the N96 of the fender tag confirmed this was a shaker hood car. Fedyk was told to jump on a plane and immediately go back and buy the car. He declined, but asked a pilot friend to

46 Rods & Classics RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

look into it on his next flight to Oahu. The pilot found the owner and found out the Challenger was not for sale. The next time Fedyk went to Hawaii, he went to meet the owner, Kirk. Kirk had bought the car in 1983 and knew exactly what it was and it was absolutely not for sale. He is a bit secretive, since he also had a ‘68 Charger 440 and a ‘68 Coronet 440 R/T that were going to be restored. Kirk had begun buying parts from Mopar almost 20 years before, to allow him to restore the car with NOS parts. The original owner had kept the six-pack and manifold and original hood and they had come with the car. Fedyk was convinced now that this was the car he wanted! As any good salesman would, Fedyk said good-bye...but knew he would be back. While waiting a whole year to get back to Hawaii, he had found out there were a few Mopar Gurus on the Islands, and got to know Mike Sittman very well. Sittman was good friends with Kirk and knew about the car as well. After a number of years of keeping in contact with the Island Mopar guys and meeting with Kirk every year, finally in late 2008, Fedyk sat down with Kirk and a deal was hammered out and Fedyk started getting all the info he could about the car.

Gary’s friendships with the Island Mopar guys helped him learn about the muscle car scene in Hawaii and the dealership that sold the car new. Hawaiian Motors had several locations around the islands and were wholly owned by the Chrysler Corporation. Hunkering down in libraries looking at public archives microfiche may not sound like the typical Hawaiian vacation, but this was beginning to be normal for the Fedyks. Looking at old ads in the local papers and any other stories or documents available on Hawaiian Motors, they came across photos and names of the salesmen. They started calling past salesmen and employees of the dealerships. One fellow they contacted, Harry Blatico, categorically stated, after Fedyk said he was looking for any info on a certain car bought at their dealership, that “we sold a lot of muscle cars...there is no way I will remember any of them.” This may be due to the fact that Hawaiian Motors CEO Clarence Young got a big award for selling the most Mopars out of all the United States in 1968 -69 -70. He asked Fedyk what kind of car it was and upon hearing it was a Panther Pink ‘70 Challenger, Blatico immediately said he remembered it well...could be because, although now loved so much, the Plymouths painted Panther Pink and Dodges painted Moulin Rouge did not sell well. The fellow mentioned the car arrived in time for the 1970 Hawaiian Auto Show and was the Hawaiian Motors entry for the auto show. Although certain groups of people swarmed the car and professed love for it, no one stepped up to buy it. The car had been driven 58,000 miles in the first decade of its life before ending up on the side of the road with a “for sale” sign in the window. It was painted Flat Black and had a tunnel ram sticking through the hood. A couple of military guys were looking to buy the car for its motor, but lost out to Kirk, who promised to one day restore the car. Although the car was not running well when he bought it in 1983, he swapped the tunnel ram for a single four-barrel and left it in the parking garage where it stayed...un-driven... for 23 years. Luckily the first owner’s name was found in the phone book. This led Fedyk to meet Domedes Juan, now in his 70s, and he was pleased the car was going to be restored, and now Fedyk got the history on the car’s “first” life. It turns out Bill Duque, a salesman at the dealership, called his friend Domedes, who was working as a chef in a restaurant, to come take a look at it. He hopped on the bus and upon seeing the bright pink car with it’s “Sparkling Bubble” sticking out of the hood, struck a deal for under $4,000 in June of 1970. Set up the way it was from the factory, this car was meant for street racing, and the new owner did his share of that. One evening Jaun recalls getting four speeding tickets, but he still kept street racing and eventually ended up installing a dual quad tunnel ram set-up. Cruising the local strip and Ziggys drive in where other car guys hung out, the car raced whenever it got a chance. After the sale to Fedyk, the car had been towed to Mike Sittman’s place where it was put into a container and shipped to Tacoma, and then imported into Canada in February 2009. Once arriving home, Fedyk got in contact with Dave West, who had recently restored another extremely rare shaker hood car...one of only two Challengers with a shaker hood and a four-barrel carb. West gave Fedyk a copy of Hemmings from 2008 that had the story of the sister car to Fedyk’s - the number 3 Panther Pink car with a shaker hood, and it had been found in Alaska! Fedyk’s car was stripped apart, and although there is no salt used on the roads in Hawaii to combat ice, there is salt everywhere in the air, and the Hawaiian cars rust differently than on the West Coast of Canada. Quarters had previously been repaired but were repaired a second time using NOS parts as well as the trunk floor. Curiously, the rockers were fine. The body was sent to Travis in Maple Ridge for the ultimate rotisserie repairs and paint to the body.

48 Rods & Classics RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

Meanwhile, West and Fedyk took stock of the large amount of NOS parts that Kirk had acquired and looked at which parts needed restoring or replacing. The hood, trunk, door, latches and hinges all were restored by Jules Daddio “The Wiper Man” who restored all the latches and bolts to the exact silver zinc or black phosphate, to be the correct colour. With all the information acquired about the car, soon the info on the Panther Pink Challenger was sent to Galen Govier and he agreed it was an extremely early-production Panther Pink car. Fedyk’s pink car was the first of five Panther Pink Challengers to get a Shaker hood with the 440 six pack. Finding NOS parts may seem easier with the advent of the internet. But because of the rarity of this car, even NOS parts had to have the correct date stamp to ensure these could have been the parts used on the car. Once back at West’s shop, it was reassembled. One of West’s specialities is the correct overspray of paint and inspection markings etc. to make this car exactly as it came from the factory. A couple of other minor, but correct details - the car was painted in acrylic enamel like the original. Wanting to keep the original door tags intact, the inner doors were sanded and painted around the tag while leaving no ridge around it. As with all Challengers, the dipsticks are darker orange because they are sourced from a supplier outside of the engine plant. They were dipped in paint and hung upside down to dry, leaving a drip mark. Lordco provided the parts and did the engine rebuild, but the original pistons and cam were used with new bearings etc. The motor was extremely clean with minimal wear. Al Stoltz out of Kelowna did the transmission and it has all the correct markings. The six pack assembly was restored by Scott at Harm’s Automotive. The build sheet was found under the rear seat and verifies all options and equipment on the car, including the rare locking gas cap, are correct as the car came from the factory. The car was built and shipped just in time for the 1970 Hawaiian Auto Show and is as it was provided from the dealership, and there is no indication it was changed in any way before the show. Sometimes, locally-provided cars from dealerships have dealer installed options. Recently, after the car had been completed for over a year, date code-correct front rubber brake lines were found and installed. The car has been followed closely, as it was restored by all the friends, here and on the Hawaiian Islands, that Fedyk has made since finding this car. Regular phone calls and e-mails between all parties have made this project more than a barn find story, but more like the quest for the Holy Grail and its restoration! I got to shoot photos of this amazing car in August, not far from the owner’s home, and seeing as it only has 8 miles on it, I feel fortunate to have gotten to see it drive. One thing about these ultra-rare cars, to drive them after so many hours of work perfecting them is a major commitment. The car’s value is only outweighed but its shocking pink paint...but whatever colour you see, it all ends up as pure gold!

Ford Torino King Cobra still turns heads

he Louisville Concours d’Elegance held at the famous Churchill Downs racecourse, the home of the Kentucky Derby, moved this year to the French Lick Resort in West Baden, Indiana. If you’re considering a trip to this part of the U.S., I would highly recommend that you visit the architectural marvel and National Historic Landmark. Google “West Baden Springs Hotel” for more details. This is one of the first concours events that I have judged that had a contingency plan if the weather turned, and it certainly did that with a fierce storm and flash flooding throughout the weekend. The event was moved into an indoor tennis court and the first level of the facility’s parking garage and turned out better than many expected it would. Among the usual array of spectacular American classics and European sports cars, a 1970 Ford Torino King Cobra caught my eye. Upon further investigation and speaking to the owner, Steve Hennell of Lewisburgh, Tennessee, I discovered this was one of only three prototypes built in an attempt to fend off the Mopar competition and to challenge the Daytonas and Superbirds in the NASCAR racing series. With General Motors on a hiatus from racing, the Ford and Mopar rivalry was fierce. There was a lot of excitement about the aerodynamic King Cobra, including an appearance on the front cover of Motor Trend magazine (October, 1969), but it

was to be short-lived. Ford President Lee Iacocca cancelled 75 percent of its 1970 racing budget, and pulled all of Ford’s factory support to racing in 1971. To see a functional 43-year-old prototype is quite rare, and to see one of this significance was certainly a treat. It boasts a near perfect condition Torino body, with its unique sloping nose and recessed headlights that resemble those of a Datsun 240Z, and under the hood there’s the original 375-hp, 429 cubic-inch V8 engine that was rescued out of the Holman and Moody racing shop in North Carolina. The car is completely original with the exception of a fresh paint job. One of the other examples, finished in red, is being offered for sale by a dealer in North Carolina for $599,000 US. Anyone looking for a crown jewel to add to their Ford collection would be hardpressed to find another one because the photographed yellow example is not for sale.

FERRARI PLUGGEDTOUR IN PI’s classic Ferrari 308 and over the years, as I watched each new generation of Ferraris come and go, I always dreamed of what it would be like to drive one.

Ferrari Experience Story and photos by Jason Grunsell

T

he last five years of my life have been spent in pursuit of my dream to create and host a TV show about exotic cars on the roads of Canada called First Rides. This undertaking involves constant research, writing of episodes, making connections with people who have exotic cars to use on the show, and endlessly surfing the net and YouTube for the latest videos about supercars. In late July 2013, I came across a website with a link for a Shell competition to find the Ultimate Car Enthusiast in Canada; this was the one competition in the entire world that I should enter. The grand prize was six nights and seven days in Italy for two. The heart of the prize was a two-day adventure at Ferrari to tour the factory, the museum and to drive a Ferrari on the Fiorano track!! I was on my way to see my wife when I received the call that I had won the competition. My wife went through the roof with joy and for the next two months, I kept thinking this was a dream I would wake up from any moment, but once we’d arrived in Maranello with the Ferrari sign visible from my hotel room balcony and the roar of those engines in my ears, I knew it was no dream. Upon arrival in our hotel room, I collapsed onto the bed feeling sick from what later turned out to be food poisoning. In the midst of my agony I kept hearing the roar of engines, mighty V8s and V12s revving and then fading into the distance, then I remembered I was in a hotel five minutes from Ferrari on the trip of a life time. I’d like to say that immediately cured me; it did not, but I was motivated to get off the bed and get ready to enter a world of myth and legend. I have been a Ferrari fan since I was eight years old, watching the 1978 Formula 1 GP at Monza, where I was mesmerized by the red Ferrari of Gilles Villeneuve. Ferrari cemented its place in my heart with Magnum 50 RPM Dec 13 / Jan 14

The first day driving down the Via Abetone Inferiore No 4 gave me goose bumps. So many hours spent on Google and now here I was looking at the historic Factory Gate entrance - no longer an image on a screen. Reality is so much better. Our first stop was lunch at Ferrari’s famous restaurant, Il Cavallino, which is across the road from the Factory Gate. Afterwards, we toured the factory, then in the evening had dinner at the Montana Restaurant, an institution famous in its own right from all the drivers eating there and the enormous amount of authentic Ferrari and F1 driver’s paraphernalia. We walked into Ferrari, had a group picture taken in front of the historic gate, and I felt like a little kid where everything is wonderful and new and exciting. I was not sure how I would react touring the production floor, but witnessing the first time a new Ferrari 458 engine was started was highly emotional. We witnessed the birth, if you will, of a red Ferrari 458 Italia, a red F12 Berlinetta, and a slightly rarer yellow Ferrari 458 Speciale, its production beginning only three weeks prior. My senses were overloaded as we drove along Viale Enzo Ferrari, the main avenue at Ferrari, as test drivers headed out on the mandatory 50 kilometres of testing for each new Ferrari. Every car resonated with its unique sound, the V8 California and 458 competing with the roar of the F12 Berlinetta. I was blessed by a rare sighting of not one, but two LaFerrari supercars out on test rides - exotic car nirvana. At the Formula 1 race car building, we lingered a mere five minutes, but were privileged to see the chassis of the race cars that had just returned from the Japanese GP. I am a huge Formula1 fan and while completely in awe, I also realized what a rare and unique position I was in. The last building on the tour was the Clienti Program where ex-F1 racing cars are sold to private citizens. They are maintained by Ferrari and transported around the world at the owner’s request (and expense); row after row of Ferrari Formula 1 thoroughbreds, with famous names like Alonso, Raikkonen, Berger, and Schumacher still adorning the sides of their cockpits. I am so used to watching these cars surrounded by hordes of mechanics, and here they were all alone within easy reach. History lives in these cars but to access their history is for those with deep pockets. Driving away from the F1 team buildings, I caught my first glimpse of Fiorano, perhaps the most famous test track in motoring and Formula 1. The hairs on my arms and neck stood up as it dawned on me that the next day, I would driving a Ferrari on this very track. I awoke the next morning once again to the roaring of Ferrari engines, only today I knew I would be making those sounds myself. The Pilota driving program is a unique experience only available to owners of
