Ontario Promotes Auto Parts Competitiveness At the Canadian International Auto Show back in February, the Government of Ontario, Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association (APMA) proudly announced twenty new technology innovation projects that will advance Ontario’s global competitiveness in the automotive sector. The projects are going to be funded through Stream 1 of OCE’s Automotive Supplier Competitiveness Improvement Program (ASCIP) which is a partnership between the APMA, OCE and the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Growth (MEDG). The program is hoping to increase the sourcing capabilities of Ontario-based small and medium sized automotive suppliers, while also encouraging innovation and productivity initiatives that will hopefully increase success in growing export markets. Projects are eligible for up to $100,000 in funding and can be up to two years in length. Dr. Tom Corr, OCE’s President and CEO, was quoted as saying “ASCIP will increase sourcing capabilities and productivity and drive success for Ontario’s auto suppliers to ensure they are able to continue to meet and exceed the high level of innovation and competitiveness their clients have come to expect.” The 20 successful projects will be receiving over $1.4 million in ASCIP funding to reimburse up to 50 percent of eligible program costs. For more information on ASCIP, please visit the Programs page of the OCE website at www.oce-ontario. org/programs.

BIG Show East Draws Record Attendance BIG Show East, which is Keystone Automotive Operations’ annual aftermarket event, was held February 24-25 in Washington, DC, and saw record-breaking attendance as well as a surge in sales. The strong attendance and sales at the show, which is sponsored by ReadyLIFT Suspension Inc, indicates a strong start to the year for the industry and from the sounds of it, the show offered two very productive days for all involved. The show attracts a broad mix of automotive aftermarket speciality business segments from all categories including, but not limited to, speed and performance, and truck and off-road. Over 200 exhibitors were showcased at the event, and a 4,000 square-foot New Products Showcase area put the spotlight on what is the latest and greatest for the aftermarket industry. The event was followed by the similar BIG Show West, which took place mid-March in Grapevine, Texas.

Ford has recently begun shipping the all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor to China, which marks the first time that any U.S.-built F-Series truck has officially been exported to China. The F-150 Raptor is the ultimate high-performance off-road pickup truck and features a purpose-built engine, chassis and suspension which allow it to travel through even the most challenging of terrains. The F-150 Raptor will be exported to China as a four-door SuperCrew model and, currently entering its second generation, utilizes a military-grade, high-strength, aluminum–alloy cab while the body is uniquely composite. The Raptor will join the Ford GT, Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST to expand the Ford Performance portfolio in China.
Reports Suggest FCA’s 5.7L HEMI V8 Could Be On Its Way Out A recent report from FCA enthusiast site Allpar.com has suggested that the very popular 5.7-litre HEMI V8 engine that powers the Dodge Charger, Challenger and Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram pickups could be on its way out as early as 2015. The report also states that FCA has been ramping up production of the 5.7 HEMI while they can to attain something of a stockpile before production is halted. This news has led to some speculation about the next Ram 1500, which is expected sometime in 2019, with regards to its powertrain. With the success of Ford’s twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine, it raises the question of Ram perhaps offering a turbocharged version of its existing Pentastar V6 engine. It is worth noting that Ford still continues to offer the 5.0-litre V8 engine option for the F-150, so it would come as somewhat of a surprise if FCA truly did away with the 5.7 HEMI.
Tackling the Frozen Tundra
T
he all-new Ford Raptor is a beast, and as such, this high-performance pickup truck is equipped to tackle just about any terrain or conditions put before it.
We recently had the opportunity to experience Ford’s latest hooligan machine in rural Quebec, where harsh winter conditions are known to wreak havoc on vehicles and just about anything else. Ford’s public relations team had elected to organize an event at Mécaglisse, a multi-discipline 700-acre motorsport facility nestled in the Laurentians about 90 minutes northwest of Montreal, Quebec. Mécaglisse is a four-season facility, but it is probably best known for the fact that it houses nearly 15 kilometres of icy tracks during the winter months. A variety of automobile manufacturers, tire companies, and racing teams utilize the facility for severe weather testing so it would prove a worthy opponent for the second generation Raptor. Under the broad hood of the second generation Raptor resides Ford’s most powerful variant of its innovative 3.5-litre Eco10 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017
Story and photos by Russell Purcell
The all-new 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is a beast! Boost V6 engine. This mechanical marvel produces a healthy 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. These prodigious numbers allow the wide-bodied monster to hustle to 100 kilometres per hour in a tick over 5 seconds. While some Ford fans may whinge about the loss of the ferocious 6.2-litre V8 that came before it, the EcoBoost engine is more powerful, more fuel efficient, and even helps reduce drag by almost five percent. These improvements in efficiency can also be traced to the new 10-speed transmission, an ultra-smooth operating gearbox that replaces the 6-speed that was fitted to the first generation trucks. Manual gear selection can be readily executed using steering wheel mounted paddles or a clever toggle switch. The rumble of this engine and boisterous exhaust note emitted when driven with authority will soon be your new addiction. The Raptor was designed to run at triple-digit speeds over (and through) the harshest of terrain. The original concept was derived from the purpose-built trucks that compete in desert endurance races like Baja, so the Raptor rolls on 17-inch wheels fitted with over-sized 30-inch tires suspended by one of the most capable suspensions ever offered on a producAPRIL/MAY 2017 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 11
tion automobile. In short, the Raptor will gobble up bumps and dance over ruts like a champion, no matter what type of landscape, topography, or weather conditions may lie in its way. The tires have been specifically engineered for the Raptor by noted manufacturer BF Goodrich, and the K02 features a very aggressive tread pattern and sidewall to allow it to claw and cut its way over and through most surfaces. The day incorporated several activities, including hustling the big Raptor over snow-covered country roads in convoy fashion, as well as roaring down a deeply rutted and sloppy off-road track bordered by icy banks and a tunnel of trees. The former allowed us to evaluate the vehicle’s ability to adapt to daily driving duties as well as to carve some corners on slippery asphalt, while the latter proved that this race-proven machine is up to any challenge, and with its long list of performance upgrades, is able to deliver massive thrills in a very manageable package. Especially when piloted by a professional driver who was well versed in the capabilities of the Raptor and familiar with the icy roads. The truck’s bold and aggressive appearance can be intimidating, but its muscular body panels, wide stance, and glorious rumble suit what stands as the ultimate off-road pickup truck. The truck feels planted at speed, as the wide KO2 tires seem to grip and go, and in fact, in

Even when tossed hard into corners, the Raptor felt more planted than the previous model, regardless of terrain or the consistency of the road surface. Over-sized brakes seemed fade-free throughout the day, despite the fact these trucks had been driven hard all week, and there is less bob and wobble exhibited under hard braking than I have experienced on the previous truck. chassis and featured a 230 cubic-inch flathead six-cylinder engine, a two-speed transfer case, a four-speed transmission and also had power take off (PTO) capability to operate auxiliary equipment. It was produced (with very little change) till 1968 when new light-duty truck safety regulations in the United States made the almost thirty yearold cab obsolete; though production for export continued for almost another decade. Of note for collectors, in 1966 a short-lived Crew Cab model was added, and now those are rare.
The Power Wagon is a product of the Second World War. More than 255,000 of these 3/4-ton 4x4 trucks saw service. These trucks were so successful at navigating European and Pacific battlefields that after the war, Dodge engineers used this truck as the basis for their civilian Power Wagon models. Introduced in 1946 with a new cab and a purpose-built 8-foot cargo box, it rode on a 126-inch wheelbase
Fast forward to 2005 at Chrysler’s Chelsea proving grounds in Michigan, where an earthen presentation podium blows apart to reveal a new Dodge Ram Power Wagon. It roared out onto the presentation carpet covered in dirt and sporting a name that hadn’t been riveted to a Dodge fender in over 25 years. This was the rebirth of the modern Power Wagon. Since then, it has dropped the Dodge name (it’s now part of the Ram standalone brand) but the purpose of this HD truck remains the same – go where no other factory built truck dares.
escribing the Ram Power Wagon as “new” is peculiar; even though the 2017 model is just that. This truck’s basic design is over 70 years old. Mind you, the terrain it’s meant to conquer is much older than that, so in this case, the “new” is irrelevant. Instead, I’m thinking that a design legacy of over seven decades is exactly what you want in a truck like this.
A Power Wagon starts with a stock 2500series HD frame. Ram then adds locking front and rear differentials, two-speed transfer case, an electronically disconnecting sway bar, high-pressure Bilstein monotube shocks, heavy front and rear springs, skid plates and underbody protection, special 33-inch off-road tires, an integrated 12,000-lb electric winch and, of course, increased ride height. For 2017, the standard engine is a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 that makes 410 hp and peak torque of 429 lb-ft. A unique feature of this engine is an electronic calibration that softens the throttle response when in 4WD-Low, yet raises the idle speed by 100 rpm to increase low-end torque. 22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017
steady – at speed, it’s rough. But then speed is not its purpose; this stiff setup lets it climb steep, jumbled rocks with a surefooted ease, while carrying a crew and substantial payload. Hence the reason it’s a favourite of forestry and fire services throughout North America. It boasts a payload of 1,510 lb. and a tow rating of 10,030 lb. During our off-road drive (in a public lands-designated off-roading area of the desert), the only other vehicles we met with were heavily modified Jeeps and ATVs. It’ a compliment to the Power Wagon’s engineering that it can keep up to this company off-road; yet, at the end of the dusty day, it drives home, comfortably, on the highway.
Driving this truck through the Nevada desert inspired an almost reckless confidence in my ability to climb obstacles that would make a goat sweat. Even through the soft sand, the aggressive tread of the tires floated the truck, though that’s when I appreciated the 6.4’s torque that churned out of these traps. Sharp rises and deep gulleys didn’t impede the truck either; its height (14.3-inches of clearance) and steep approach (33.6 degrees) and departure (26.2 degrees) angles prevented hang-ups. Then again, that’s why it does have an integrated front-mounted winch and massive tow hooks.
So, while the core engineering of this truck changes little over the years, there are new esthetics and comfort features. For instance, a selection of standard and optional equipment includes power folding mirrors and power rear-sliding window with defrost. Also, one-touch, central locking includes the RamBox cargo management system and tailgate. Power seats, heated wheel, backup camera, dual-zone HVAC, nine Alpine speakers and satellite with Bluetooth are other options. Spray-in bedliner, LED bed lighting, front and rear park-assist system, poweradjustable pedals and remote start are also available. The 2017 Ram Power Wagon shows off its “ultimate off-road truck” claim with a new exterior design that incorporates styling cues found in the Ram 1500 Rebel. This starts with prominent silver “RAM” letter badge. Surrounded by a blacked-out grille, it’s bookended by bi-functional projector headlamps with LED marker lights. The domed vent-stamped hood sports a Gloss Black graphic.
After pushing the truck through worsening dry washes, I was thinking I couldn’t find a spot that would get it stuck. I’m sure there was one but I never did find it. However, a word of caution, just don’t drive it fast! Unlike the Ford Raptor which is designed to cover rough terrain quickly, the suspension on the Power Wagon is set up for slow and
In fact, the entire truck shows very little chrome. Instead, primary colour schemes are set off with front and rear bumpers that are matte-coloured and powder coated. The exception is the 17-inch forged, multi-surface aluminum wheels with Silver outer and Matte Black inners.

road equipment, including the winch, lockers, larger tires, electronic disconnecting sway bar, suspension and under-body armour. Monotone paint covers this package. The grille-surround and inserts are from the Tradesman model and are coloured Black as are the headlamp filler panels and wheel flares. The 2017 Power Wagon pricing starts at $58,945. A leather and luxury option package can be added for $4,995. These trucks are available at dealers now. The blacked-out theme continues on the flanks, where wheelarch moldings, badges, mirrors and lower body panels create a distinctive appearance. At the rear, a 324-point bold original font “RAM” is stamped into the tailgate with blacked-out lettering. A black “Power Wagon” decal crosses the bottom of the tailgate. With this package, there will be no question of what you’re driving. From what I saw in Nevada, today’s Power Wagon is also following the current pickup trend of packing more and more upscale content into trucks. That’s fine for many buyers; however, it should be noted for those who value the ability more than the convenience aspects of the truck, that Ram is also offering the Power Wagon as a base Tradesman Crew Cab 4x4 model. Although this option does not include the same interior and exterior design elements, it does include the same unique off-

FEATURE: NISSAN TITAN FULL LINEUP
Truck Family
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Nissan Canada
L
ast year, Nissan branded its all-new Titan launch as the “Year of the Truck” which was an appropriate title for a roll-out that pretty much took a full year. They started with the big dog – the Titan XD diesel-powered pickup, then followed with the XD gas engine version. Then, the regular Titan was revealed and now finally I’m at an event that brings them all together – the entire Titan family here in northeastern Quebec. And indeed, what Nissan presented here is a “family.” Wisely, they realize that to be relevant in the truck business, you must offer a variety of iron - just like the competition does. And to be really relevant in the North American truck business, you have to offer an “American” truck. Well, this generation of Titan (just forget there ever was an old Titan) is designed in California, engineered in Michigan, built in Mississippi and powered by engines out of Indianapolis. Nissan now “gets” what our truck culture is, and has jumped in with both feet. Now comes the hard part – convincing truck buyers. For now, they just want guys to consider them when shopping, and that’s why they are working hard to field choices across the line. Every truck buyer has a job list in mind when they go shopping – a list that varies by region, occupation and climate; being able to build models to match those specific needs is why companies like Ford, GM and Ram prosper. By comparison, what Nissan has brought out so far can only be called a good start. But, you have to start somewhere. Nissan does not want to call its Titan XD a 2500series truck. They would rather buyers thought 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017
of it as a “heavy half-ton.” But looking at the gross weight, it does in fact fall into the ¾-ton category. Either way, the XD features the Cummins 5.0-litre V8 Turbo Diesel which will comfortably tow 12,000 lb, and that is the point. In fact, the emphasis in this truck is on towing, utility features and driving aids, including an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation. The diesel is mated to a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission and the factory offers two available hitches, including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed. A fifth-wheel hitch is coming. As for the cargo bed itself – whether it’s the XD or the Titan – Nissan has paid special attention to this, the business end of the truck. It starts with a spray-in bed liner, damped tailgate, under-lip LED lighting and a unique rail

To trim out the XD trucks, you have a choice of five packages, the top being the Platinum Reserve, and the off-road version is called the Pro-4X. Unless you’re buying a straight work truck, these two packages will no doubt be the most popular. Another lesson Nissan has learned from Detroit is that truck buyers like the electronic and creature comforts – these days, the more the better, it seems. So the last offensive in this rollout is the release of the new Titan. Now, the Titan is different from the XD. First, it is a half-ton and does not try to be anything else. It rides on a different chassis, is about 15-inches shorter than the XD, does not offer diesel (though it also sports the 5.6 V8) and will be available in a two-door regular cab. This is how the family grows.
and sliding tie-down system. They even offer in-bed storage boxes that lock. However, these aren’t permanent - five screws will remove them to free up space when needed. The other version of the XD I drove in Quebec was powered by the re-engineered 5.6-litre V8 gas engine. This new version makes 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. It’s an aluminum block with 32 valves and direct injection, and is naturally aspirated. It is coupled to a new seven-speed automatic transmission and is at least 20 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Towing capacity on the XD drops to 9,300 lbs with the gas motor, but then the price also drops by around $7,000 – again, it’s about choice.

The one piece of the pie that is currently missing is a V6 offering. Nissan says there will be one, but they are just a little behind getting it ready for production. Once the V6 and regular cab options are moving down the assembly line, Nissan will have the opportunity to offer sales to fleet and government buyers. For private buyers, though, this regular Titan will most often be purchased as a crewcab and with the gas motor, offers 9,300 lb of towing and 1,610 lbs of payload capacity. This far into the launch of Titan, I won’t spend words talking about the look of the truck – everyone has seen it by now multiple times. But, what I will say is that I’ve had countless conversations with truck
guys about its sheet metal over the past eight months and I haven’t had a single negative comment on the look. From an aesthetics-only point of view, Nissan has nailed it. Past the holy trinity of the truck (looks, power, load), Nissan has spent considerable time on the electronics. All of them contribute to safety, and some to making the jobs you’ll do with your truck easier. This is the stuff you can’t see but which will make your overall ride and tasks better. These driving aids include RearView Monitor and Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Front and Rear Sonar System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). All these are constants for the truck, but when hooking up trailers, they add another dimension of safety and one-man-operation convenience. The Around View Monitor (AVM) gives a unique “bird’s eye” view of the surrounding area from front, rear and side cameras. The Moving Object Detection (MOD) alerts the driver to hazards, and this includes an on-screen notification and warning chime. As I mentioned earlier, Nissan ‘gets’ that truck guys want their trucks tough, but the interiors to be soft. To that end, they offer interiors that are comparable to any others currently on the market. For instance, in the top-of-the line Platinum Reserve, you’ll find leather-appointed seats with “Platinum Reserve” branding, heated steering wheel, chrome exhaust tailpipe finishers, 20x7.5-inch dark chrome-like wheels, driver and passenger heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, two-tone paint, dark chrome door handle, leather-wrapped steering wheel with a wood insert, wood instrument panel finishers, leather-wrapped shift knob with a dark-painted trim ring, and dark chrome-accented vent knobs and cup holder trim. As I said, they’ve learned. Pricing for the 2017 Titan Crew Cab (gas) base model starts at $44,650, while the XD version of the same adds $2,000. Titan XD diesel Crew Cab starts at $52,400. These are the listed MSRP; however, aggressive incentives are currently being offered. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017

FEATURE: F-150 FUEL ECONOMY
Where is the F-150 headed? Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Ford
F
ord is in serious trouble. It is selling more pickup trucks than at any time in its 100-plus year history. In fact, the entire auto industry has seen a huge surge in truck sales. Just look at the market share of “light trucks” over just the last 35 years. It was just 9.7 percent in 1979, then it started a steady climb to 47 percent by 2001. Since then, it has remained north of 50 percent each year with no signs of slowing down. So, why is this a problem? It all has to do with CAFE – and that’s not one you have lunch at. No, it stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy.
CAFE standards require each vehicle to hit a government mandated fuel economy rating. Small cars have to do more, trucks less. However averages are calculated across the sales of an entire company’s fleet – and if you sell a lot of trucks, well, your averages are going to go up, aren’t they? Cafe rules were first implemented after the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973-74. U.S. energy policy demanded that automobile manufacturers do their bit to make the USA energy self-sufficient. Today that goal remains the same. Currently, CAFE covers a manufacturer’s fleet of passenger cars or light trucks with a GVWR of 8,500 lb or less (but also including medium-duty passenger vehicles, such as large sportutility vehicles and passenger vans, with GVWR up to 10,000 lb), produced for sale in the United States. We follow the same rules in Canada. So while pickup trucks of pretty much any vintage have stayed the same, the volume of sales has increased dramatically, and that is what is upsetting the fuel economy balance at companies like Ford. Powertrain upgrades in past decades were mostly driven my market forces, but today, looming new CAFE rules are dictating what companies like Ford will have to build.

At the 2017 Detroit International Auto Show, we got a very clear glimpse of this CAFE-fuelled future. Ford announced the addition of a small diesel to its F-series pickup this coming year – as well as a notice that by 2020, it will offer a hybrid powered version of that truck. Currently, Ford is also combining its EcoBoost engines with 10-speed automatic transmissions and even reducing the displacement of those engines, despite the fact that these motors are already very cheap on fuel. It’s obvious that all these efforts are aimed at decreasing fuel consumption. That in itself is good for consumers – but the speed at which they have to do it is what is worrisome. However, they have no choice – CAFE is the law and the wild card for Ford is that the ever increasing ratio of truck to car sales can’t be predicted. They have to find a way to bring the fleet average down. Targets for CAFE 2016 fuel economy were 34.0 mpg (6.9L/100 km) across the board. This is why Ford (and the other truck builders) are stretching fuel economy by whatever means possible. But it’s not enough, so that’s why adding diesel is a great option for bringing that average down, while gas/electric hybrids would lower it even more. So here we are in the early days of 2017, but Ford must look much farther ahead because the CAFE goals keep changing. For instance, the F150 or equivalent-sized pickup truck has a 2018 target of 25 mpg (9.4L/100 km). But, in 2022, that number rises to 26 mpg (9.0L/100 km) and then rises again each year till it hits 30 mpg (7.8L/100 km) in 2025 – and that day, not as far in the future as you might think, is what Ford engineers are already concentrating on.

RV-ING: NATIONAL RV SHOW
What’s New in RVs for 2017 Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
E
ach year at the dealer-only National RV Show in Louisville, I cover 30 to 40 kilometres of carpeted floor climbing in and out of every conceivable trailer looking for what’s new. Over those 2½ days, I can’t help but notice some common trends running through the construction and decor of the new units. This year I saw a few interesting things I’d like to share. First off, travel trailers are back in a big way. By contrast, fifth wheels were the overwhelming favourite of builders for a solid ten-year period, but starting about two years ago, I noted more conventional trailer designs on the floor. This year it’s obvious - but, within this group there is also another trend. Smaller, lighter weight and simple design. The entry-level end of the market is getting a lot of attention. By this, though, I don’t mean cheap. Instead, it appears to be an effort to push couples trailers and minimalist units that cater to people looking for an outdoor active lifestyle.
REV Group American Patriot
trailers have a height limit of 13-feet 6-inches, so why should a trailer builder hold to 12-feet? The extra height makes these units feel airy, and provides space for ceiling fans, hanging fixtures and more cupboard space. The number of motorized platforms continues to expand, with units now riding on chassis from Mercedes, Ford, Ram, Freightliner and GM. Diesel engines are now available in small displacements as well as large. The largest increase is coming in the Class B and B-plus models. On the other hand, Class C’s seem to be dying out, with almost nothing new at the show. These are just some of the trends I noted on the Show floor in Louisville this year. Please enjoy this collection of what’s New for 2017 from the National RV Show. Continued on pg.54
The next innovation is not new at all. Bunkbeds. However, in familytype trailers, they are everywhere. The big changes are that they are being offered as double-bed bunks – some of which are motorized. Bunks are also found in slideouts. The bigger bathroom trend continues with more units offering one and a half baths, and the size increasing by placing the bath across the entire width of the trailer at the rear. Inside, I see more and more large showers – some up to 48-inches. Many include a built-in seat. A neat kitchen feature I saw in a few trailers was an elongated U-shaped dinette. This bench will easily seat six and the table is a longer rectangle, rather than square. Fifth-wheel builders continue to utilize air space more and more. By that I mean building the trailers taller. After all, commercial 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2017
